A WORLD CLASS LEISURE, RESIDENTIAL, BUSINESS AND CULTURAL HUB OF GLOBAL PROPORTIONS

SAADIYAT ISLAND Just seven minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi and 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport, the 27 square kilometre Saadiyat Island is undergoing a remarkable transformation into a world class leisure, residential, business and cultural hub of global proportions, housing the world's largest single concentration of premier cultural assets. These will include the Zayed National Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi - all designed by Pritzker prize winners.

6

The island’s purpose built visitor centre - Manarat Al Saadiyat (which translates from Arabic as 'a place of enlightenment'), brings Saadiyat's vision to life, complemented perfectly by a permanently open-to-thepublic exhibition: 'The Saadiyat Story' gives visitors an interactive narrative on the history and cultural vision behind the island.

Moved piece by piece from Shanghai, where it welcomed almost two million visitors to the UAE’s national exhibition during the World Expo 2010, the UAE Pavilion is emerging as a new landmark exhibition and events venue. Hosting some of the country’s most important cultural functions, the striking dune-shaped structure was designed by London’s acclaimed Foster + Partners. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is the region’s first ocean course; the Gary Player-designed masterpiece respectfully harnesses the natural beauty of Saadiyat Island’s magnificent, white sand beaches for a truly unique playing experience. With two five star properties already opened - The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi and Park Hya Abu Dhabi - and more in the pipeline, the island’s leisure and hospitality offering is rapidly increasing. With its

LUXURY SAADIYAT

own distinctive style, the exclusive Saadiyat Beach Club celebrates the elegance and peacefulness of this unique island. Leisure services include an outdoor swimming pool, a workout room with fitness and wellness programmes, spa facilities, sauna and steam rooms, kids' pool and playing areas, and private cabanas and loungers set on the stunning, white beach. Set on the island’s serene natural shores, the 400-metre Saadiyat Public Beach is a great spot for a day out, and the perfect place to enjoy Abu Dhabi’s clean, warm turquoise waters. There are lounge chairs, showers, bathrooms, lockers, changing rooms, towels, umbrellas, ample parking and lifeguards are on duty throughout the day. The beach is open daily from 8am to 8pm, and entry is AED 25 (US$ 6.8) for adults and AED 15 (US$ 4.1) for children over six years old. www.saadiyat.ae

The original ‘guests’ of Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Island, the Hawksbill sea turtles, continue to nest on the destination's sweeping beachfront. The nine kilometre Saadiyat Beach plays host to several Hawksbill turtle nests every year. The Hawksbill is listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, as its population has declined by more than 80 per cent worldwide over the last three generations due to habitat destruction and poaching. Since master developer Tourism Development & Investment Company began its Hawksbill Turtle Conservation Programme in early 2010, geing the buy in of developers, contractors and now resort operators, some 650 eggs have hatched successfully on Saadiyat.

WHAT’S ON

Louvre Abu DhAbi StorieS Louvre Abu Dhabi displayed a selection of the museum's recently acquired artworks in Louvre Abu Dhabi Stories: Al-Qalam and Louvre Abu Dhabi Stories: Immortal Figures at Manarat Al Saadiyat that closed its doors to the public on 30 August. The displays included illuminated manuscripts, figures and statues that transcend history and endure as treasures of past civilisations.

8

Louvre Abu Dhabi Stories: Al-Qalam A selection of seven objects from a range of disciplines including philosophy, poetry, and religious studies. They originate from various cultures and civilisations, yet all share the unity of conveying the power of ‘the wrien word’. In the illuminated manuscripts on display, the integration of imagery lends an aesthetic complement to the messages conveyed. In Qur’an folios, where paintings are forbidden, the art of calligraphy creates an illumination with unsurpassed beauty.

Louvre Abu Dhabi Stories: immortal Figures From the ancient to the present day, humankind has been expressing itself through visual means, conveying distinctive images. Analysing various representations of the human figure across time has formed a deeper understanding of its civilisations and cultures. These four artworks transcend history, for they have survived the ages and continue to remain and endure as symbols of immortality

univerSAL expreSSionS: ConCert inSpireD by Louvre Abu DhAbi In the context of the Emirati-French cultural dialogue, this concert was a part of a prestigious programme initiated by TCA Abu Dhabi and French authorities, leading up to the opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Led by internationally celebrated conductor and former Director of the Orchestre de Paris, Christoph Eschenbach, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (Youth Orchestra), will perform two world premiere commissions in Abu Dhabi overlooking the construction site of the future museum. The evening began with Emirati composer Faisal Al Saari’s specially commissioned piece Zayed’s Dream, which linked and entwined the wide symphonic sounds of a classical orchestra with melodies and instruments from Emirati heritage. This was followed by a composition from one of the greatest living contemporary French composers, the director of the Conservatoire de

Paris, Bruno Mantovani, called Once Upon a Time. The Cello Fantasy will be performed by star soloist: Gautier Capuçon. Following the interval, the orchestra will play the spectacular symphonic piece, La Mer (The Sea) by impressionist composer, Claude Debussy.

DiALogueS in the Spirit oF Louvre Abu DhAbi This will be a month-long event, held at the du Forum on Yas Island The concept of The District is to provide the youth, those aged between 14-22, an outlet to not only discover new skills but also a platform for them to receive support and guidance in a variety of areas including innovation, entertainment, technology, fashion, digital media, health, science, nutrition and sustainability to name but a few.

Being open 7 days a week, there will be an everchanging schedule, custom-tailored to the needs of the youth, their interests and skills that they can obtain to use in everyday life. In keeping with the overall theme, the area is divided into 5 main areas; the park, alley, dome, street and block, each with its own unique design and offering. Some of the activities on offer will include smart phone photography, gaming, 3D design workshops, acting classes, fashion design, live performances and a host of others.

the FirSt Louvre Abu DhAbi exhibition In 2009 Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi was organised to mark the laying of the first stone for the future Louvre Abu Dhabi. This event offered a preview of the future museum and took the form of a 90-minute presentation, which included the unveiling of the first acquisitions for the museum’s permanent collection, together with loans of artworks from French museums, the screening of a short film on the design for the building by Pritzker-prize winning architect Jean Nouvel and an illustrated talk explaining the concept behind the museum. ‘Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi is a beautifully craed example of what a visitor will experience in the Louvre Abu Dhabi. It gives the public an opportunity to open the doors of the Louvre Abu Dhabi before its physical completion on Saadiyat Island,’ said His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chariman of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. The acquisitions on show date from as early as

the 6th century BCE and as recently as the early 20th century, and come from regions as far apart as France and China. The works of the permanent collection were supplemented by pieces on loan from the French national collections (Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Musée Guimet, Musée du Louvre, Musée National d’Art ModerneCentre Georges Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay, Musée du Quai Branly). All these works exemplified the reciprocal artistic and cultural links that will be at the heart of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The items on display included two Mamluk works – part of a Holy Qur’an manuscript from Egypt or Syria (second quarter of the 14th century) and a mosque lamp (1347–1361, Louvre), which embody the symbolism of light, the illumination of the mind and understanding of the divine. Two Buddhist sculptures – one from the Gandhara region (2nd–3rd century) and the other from China (550–577) – illustrated how different cultures influence each other. Works loaned by the Musée du Quai Branly included an elegant Tsonga headrest (second half of the 19th century) and an Abomey stool (late 19th century). Paintings on display included two works by Manet and a

landscape by Cézanne, testifying to the originality of these artists, who helped pave the way for the artistic advances of the 20th century. Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi also included a film presenting Jean Nouvel’s architectural vision, revealing how it combines forms drawn from traditional Arab architecture. Other events included symposia and roundtables bringing together distinguished experts and leading figures from the cultural sector, including Henri Loyree, President-Director of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars, Curatorial Director at Agence France-Muséums and Dominique de Font-Réaulx, curator at the Louvre. Highlighting the future museum’s educational role, there were also art workshops for young people enabling them to create works of their own inspired by the works and themes on display.

SAADIYAT ISLAND

the MuSeuM AMong MuSeuMS – Louvre Abu DhAbi Heir to the century of Enlightenment and the French Revolution, Musée du Louvre stands since as the "museum among museums”; as such its name is a synonym of excellence in the museum field. Musée du Louvre was created in 1793 in Paris, and it is one of the oldest and largest museums. The museum hosts 35,000 works of art drawn from eight departments; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Egyptian Antiquities, Islamic Art, Paintings, Sculptures, Decorative Arts, Prints and Drawings. The museum's collection covers history of mankind from antiquity to 1848. A museum for all by virtue of the sheer variety of its collection, Musée du Louvre further highlights its universal reach via diversity of its 10 million annual visitors and an ongoing effort to make

36

contact with the widest possible French and international audience. Musée du Louvre is commied to share its name and values with Abu Dhabi through an exceptional and innovative project, based on the transfer of centuries-old experience and expertise in museum management and curatorship.

Wandering in the museum The central display will be concentrated with relevant and revealing works lining one unique path – the principal route via which visitors will navigate their way through the museum. The journey proceeds chronologically with different civilisations developing in parallel as visitors move forward on a journey through time. This display features four major periods: Archaeology and Birth of Civilisation; Medieval Days and Birth of Islam; Classical Period from Humanism to

LUXURY SAADIYAT

Enlightenment; and Modern and Contemporary Art, starting at the end of the 18th century. Visitors will be invited to study the works themselves, compare them, and delight in their unique qualities and meanings. A variety of textual and multimedia resources in multiple languages will place artworks in context, explain where they come from and relate rich histories of the objects and artworks. The central display will be complemented by a full programme of temporary exhibitions. These will amplify the message of the museum’s galleries, inviting cultural loans and exchange from institutions all over the world. www.louvreabudhabi.ae

SAADIYAT ISLAND guggenheiM Abu DhAbi Currently in development The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be a preeminent platform for contemporary art and culture that presents the most important artistic achievements of our time. From its location in the Middle East—a central axis between Europe, Asia, and Africa—the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will contribute to a more inclusive and expansive view of art history that emphasizes the convergence of local, regional, and international sources of creative inspiration rather than geography or nationality. At the same time, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will acknowledge and celebrate the specific identity derived from the cultural traditions of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates, as well as other countries in the Middle East. The museum’s collection will encompass art in all mediums produced around the world from the 1960s to the present day, and will be a catalyst for

38

scholarship in a variety of fields, chief among them the history of art in the Middle East in the 20th and 21st centuries. A dynamic program of changing exhibitions will explore common themes and affinities among the work of artists across time and place. Commissions created specifically for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection will reinforce the museum’s commitment to working with artists and supporting contemporary artistic production. Architecture The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, designed by Frank Gehry, is an experiment in inventive 21st-century museum design. The building defines a new approach to the museum visitor experience and presents an innovative vision for viewing contemporary art in the context of a desert landscape. Currently under development, the new museum will be situated on a peninsula at the northwestern tip of Saadiyat Island adjacent to Abu Dhabi in the

LUXURY SAADIYAT

United Arab Emirates. Surrounded on three sides by the gleaming waters of the Persian Gulf, the building site also serves as a manmade breakwater configured to protect the island’s pristine north beach zone. Inspired by expansive industrial studio spaces, the museum design reflects the large scale at which many contemporary artists work, and presents new gallery layouts unlike conventional museum spaces. Clusters of galleries in varying heights, shapes, and character, allow for curatorial flexibility in organizing exhibitions at dimensions that have not previously existed. Evolving from several main cues, clusters of galleries connected by catwalks center around a covered courtyard. Additional vertical clusters of galleries pile on top of the central circulation creating a combination of vertical and horizontal spaces for exhibition organization. The design also incorporates sustainable elements appropriate for the region, including natural cooling and ventilation of covered courtyards derived from the concept of traditional wind towers found throughout the Middle East. www.guggenheim.org

The National Museum of the UAE, telling the story of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, his unification of the United Arab Emirates, the history of the region and its cultural connections across the world.

The Falconry and Conservation Gallery will focus on Sheikh Zayed’s appreciation of the natural world, its conservation and preservation, as well as his passion for falconry. Originally developed as a means for surviving in the desert, falconry has evolved into a mean of life.

On entering the Zayed National Museum, visitors will embark on a compelling journey into the culture and history of the UAE, and the story of Sheikh Zayed – the UAE’s father and continual source of inspiration.

The Sheikh Zayed Library encourages visitors to take their learning about Sheikh Zayed and the UAE a step further. In the library visitors will be able to examine historical and cultural sources and explore various interactive media.

Sheikh Zayed: Life and Times is the museum’s core gallery, tracing the life story of Sheikh Zayed and his unification of the UAE. Seminal moments in the intertwined histories of man and nation will be brought alive through photographs, national treasures, key documents and personal effects belonging to the late ruler.

The core values of Sheikh Zayed introduced in the lower floor galleries will be continued in more detail in the upper floor galleries. The Land and Water Gallery explores the way the region’s natural resources were used, cultivated and traded in the past. Sheikh Zayed recognised

the importance of preserving the nation’s environment, building a framework to ensure that a similarly sustainable approach is followed today. The People and Heritage Gallery focuses on the traditional values that have been at the heart of UAE life for centuries and underpin the UAE’s political and cultural life today. These values, embraced and cherished by Sheikh Zayed, include an emphasis on the importance of human relationships, warm hospitality and living in rhythm with nature. The History and Society Gallery charts millennia of human selement in the region. Using archaeological evidence and historical records, the gallery traces the area’s history from Stone Age peoples dwelling in the area 200,000 years ago, to the creation of the modern state by Sheikh Zayed.

The Science and Learning Gallery uncovers the way that Sheikh Zayed’s passion for education transformed a society based on traditional knowledge to one where literacy and numeracy are available to all. Visitors will also discover the influence that Arabic disciplines of language, literature, navigation and medicine have had on the rest of the world. The Faith and Islam Gallery explores the crucial role of faith in Sheikh Zayed’s life as the driving force behind his humanitarianism and vision for the future of the nation. The gallery will provide a contemplative space where visitors can discover more about the history, practice and central place of Islam in UAE daily life today.

Thomas Carlyle Ford, beer known today as Tom Ford, is an American fashion designer and film director. Initially trained as an architect at Parsons School of Design, Ford spent a year working abroad at an internship for fashion house Chloé and developed a feel for the fashion industry. Prestigious Italian fashion house Gucci was struggling at the time, and Ford accepted a position in Gucci's women's Ready-to-Wear division in 1990. Ford achieved considerable success at Gucci, eventually heading up multiple divisions before being named Creative Director in 1992. Ford's efforts were pivotal in Gucci's turnaround. The company was nearly bankrupt when Ford joined the organization, but when he le in 2004, the company's value had more than doubled. During Ford's tenure with Gucci, the company acquired Yves Saint Laurent, and Ford created provocative, controversial and highly successful ad campagins for YSL fragrances Opium and M7. Tom Ford returned to the U.S. and announced the creation of his own brand in 2005. The company offers fashions, accessories and eyewear, and is known for its sexually-charged advertising. Ford also formed a partnership with Estee Lauder that same year, for the development of fragrances and cosmetics. Since we know that nuances are important, the surface of the keys is covered with the highest quality material of the latest generation which replaces ivory, i.e. Ivory Feel which, via humidity absorption, prevents fingers from slipping off the keys and provides a feeling of playing a classical instrument.

BUgATTI V gRAND SPO

The Bugai Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is the roadster version of the Veyron 16.4. The name “Grand Sport” recalls two of the most beautiful models in the Bugai brand’s history: the Type 40 and Type 43 from the late 20s and early 30s, which were the first models to be given the moniker “Grand Sport” by Eore and Jean Bugai. These roadsters were the ultimate sports cars of their day.

90

The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport combines the pioneering performance specs of the Veyron coupé with the alluring form of a roadster – and

takes the experience of open-top driving in a supercar into a new dimension. In addition, the transparent roof allows drivers to directly experience their surroundings, even when the roof is up. Whether you are cruising elegantly or pushing the car to the limits of its power, with speeds of up to 360 km/h with the roof down and 407 km/h with the roof up, you are guaranteed an absolutely thrilling driver experience and a powerful adrenaline rush.

LUXURY CARS

VEYRON ORT

The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport celebrated its world premiere in summer 2006 in Pebble Beach, California, where the first model was auctioned for over three million US dollars.

Consequently, the design of the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport embodies a timeless excellence that makes it a worthy successor to Eore Bugai’s Grand Sport models from the late 1920s.

Bugai wanted to design a roadster that redefined the technical limits of automotive engineering while also appealing to connoisseurs of aesthetic design and lovers of unique cars. The designers combined their creative finesse with the technical expertise of the engineers to achieve a perfect balance of luxurious elegance and superlative technical performance.

The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is completely sold out.

QuiLteD nApA LeAther The Grand Sport only uses top-quality napa leather that has been carefully processed so as to retain its natural breathability. Based on historic models, the leather seat covers have been quilted using a method that has been reinterpreted for use in a modern car. The paern symbolises an acceleration curve.

92

The moisture-repellent leather allows the Grand Sport to meet the very highest of expectations for an open-top sports car. The result is a minimalist aesthetic – form and function in perfect harmony.

MonoCoQue The unique structure of the Bugai Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport made it especially challenging to design the removable roof module for the new version. The passenger compartment, designed as a monocoque, perfectly combines high rigidity and extremely low weight. It is the central element of the vehicle structure. Removing the roof takes away an integral component of this structure, meaning the load path had to be redefined in order to retain the high rigidity and crash safety, including side impact and rollover protection. Consequently, the monocoque was reinforced along the sills and transmission tunnel.

LUXURY CARS

Air SCoopS A characteristic feature of the Grand Sport are the two air scoops on the le and right of the bonnet (which are redesigned for the Vitesse). These air scoops serve two functions in the roadster: firstly, they provide air intake for the engine and secondly, they are an elegantly integrated component of the rollover protection system.

Just like the Super Sport, the Vitesse uses a fullcarbon monocoque which enables an extremely high torsional rigidity of 22,000 Nm per degree with maximum passive safety. The exterior is also made completely of carbon fibre. www.bugai.com/veyron/veyron-164-grandsport/

VIKTOR &ROlF They wear the same clothes; they finish each other’s sentences, and strut their stuff down the catwalk for their own menswear collections. Their brand features both names side by side; they oen play at being each other’s twin with humour, some might find this strange, others pure genius. But they also form a true duo, with an amazing imagination and creativity like no other, which turn the classical rules of luxurious fashion and beauty upside down on its head. The Dutch duo Viktor Horsting, born 27 May 1969, and Rolf Snoeren who was born 19 December, 1969, both hail from the Netherlands where they were raised. They met whilst both aending the renowned Arnhem Academy of Art and Design; but they did not begin working together until aer their graduation. It was in 1992 that they packed up their bags and moved to Paris. (The House of Viktor & Rolf, Caroline Evans and Susannah Frankel, Merrel 2008) They began interning for brands such as Maison Martin Margiela, and designed their own clothes in spare time on the evenings, then presenting them in the art circuit, soon making a name for themselves winning the Festival d’Hyeres prize in 1993. the link between couture fashion and art seamlessly, puing deep concepts and showmanship in their work. Viktor & Rolf’s first clothing collection was shown at a competition called Salon European des Jeunes Stylistes in 1993. The collection consisted of ten looks, which comprised of pre-existing pieces from garments blended together to form a sort of clothing collage, in turn creating new clothing. It was partly made from old shirts and suits found in flea markets, stitched back together and distorted. Very reminiscent of their former employer Martin Margiela, who was part of the Antwerp group, who were very much linked to the emergence of deconstruction fashion which was a big trend of that particular era, the 1990’s.

VIKTOR &ROlF Their close link to the art scene, presenting four collections in experimental art exhibitions, led them to show their first Haute Couture collection Spring/Summer 1998. One example of their unusual but spectacular approach to fashion was their entirely topsy-turvy show in fall of 1999, with upside-down dresses and an ear-spliing backwards soundtrack, a provocative all-black show including the models’ faces, and a presentation featuring, on a revolving turntable, a single model who was layered in look aer look like a Russian doll.

In this same year, 1999, they tell Vogue they intend to step into the world of ready to wear as well as haute couture, Snoeren saying, “We have the same dream as Calvin Klein, only we want to realize it on our own terms,”. Despite Viktor & Rolf’s obvious success, couture can’t pay their bills. Vogue noted that less than half of their fanciful creations have been sold to paying customers. Horsting and Snoeren tell The New York Times that they had been surviving “on a mix of government grants, museum sales, and goodwill.” So it is not surprising they had to turn their aentions away from their couture dreams. It was in May of 2000 that their first ready to wear collection was shown, with the likes of Andre Leon Talley singing their praises, which was a huge success. The collection was panoply of red, white, and blue stars and stripes presented via posters done in a propaganda style featuring Sudanese model Alek Wek that are plastered on the showroom walls. The pair was way ahead of their time sending spectators home with a CD-ROM of their sportswear debut; it wouldn’t be for another decade that the flash drive look books that we know, will eventually become a common appearance in the fashion industry. Later in October 2003, A ten-year Viktor & Rolf retrospective opens at Paris’s Musée de la Mode et du Textile, giving them a lile taster of their former more artistic based roots. Horsting and Snoeren co-curate the displays, selecting black walls and compiling an exhibit catalogue filled with previous press coverage.

VIKTOR &ROlF Though early on they were known for wowing the fashion press but not selling a stitch, Horsting and Snoeren have since tapped into their commercial potential. In July 2005, aer three years of talks with French beauty giant L’Oréal, V&R drops its first real fragrance, Flowerbomb, an oriental bouquet of Sambac jasmine, Caleya orchid, and green tea packaged in a glass grenade shaped bole. That same year, the house’s highly anticipated H&M capsule collection drew frenzied crowds for their collaboration with fast-fashion retailer H&M, their opening-day sales were projected at a minimum of $1 million, which isn’t too shabby to say they were only scraping by not so many years before. The campaign advertisements featured Brazilian fembot model Raquel Zimmermann, pictured as a bride in a surrealist wedding to double grooms.

VIKTOR &ROlF In 2008 the pair sold a controlling stake of its business to Diesel owner Renzo Rosso. “We have high ambitions,” Snoeren commented to The New York Times, which also reported their plans to open five more boutiques within the next few years, hence why they sold a percentage of the company to raise funds for further expansion. The next few years were not their best fashion wise, with critics not shy from expressing their luke warm feelings towards their collections in 2011, the NYTimes.com critic in particular saying the pair “live on their own planet,” So the pair aempted to move towards a more mature collection with a 1930s-inspired fall set, sending models out in printed silk pyjamas and Veronica Lake waves. But conceptual cohesiveness remains a problem, as old motifs make less successful return appearances. Although they strive to not be part of the main stream fashion cycle it seems they have fall victim to their own enemy. www.viktor-rolf.com

Mark Pocock, National General Manager - says that Aston Martin could not be more at home in the ultra exclusive environment of the Riyadh event. “Aston Martin is probably the widest known luxury sports car brand in the world,” he noted. “Our 100-year racing history and 50 year association with the quintessentially British character of James Bond have introduced the brand to hundreds of millions of aficionados across the world.”
