DESTINATIONS From Poroy, near the ancient city of Cusco, to the Lost City of Machu Picchu, a trip on the Belmond Hiram Bingham takes you through the most romantic scenery in Peru. CUSCO A journey on the Belmond Hiram Bingham starts or finishes in Poroy, 20 minutes from the ancient capital city of Cusco. In Cusco’s main square you’ll find an array of colourful stalls framed by curious, charming stone walkways and streets. Delve a lile deeper and discover beautiful lile arcades with boutiques selling local cras.

THE SACRED VALLEY On the journey to the lost city, the train runs through Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. MACHU PICCHU Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, is one of the most famous examples of Inca architecture. The ruins, located in a lush jungle, are believed to have been built in the mid-15th century. Opened in stages between 1891 and 1916, this extraordinary engineering achievement is a vital link for all the communities that live in close proximity to the line – and to travel along this route is by far the best way to experience the vastness and grandeur of Russia’s rarely visited interior.

AS ERIC NEWBY IN HIS 1977 BOOK THE BIG RED TRAIN RIDE SUCCINCTLY STATED, ‘THE TRANSSIBERIAN IS THE BIG TRAIN RIDE. ALL THE REST ARE PEANUTS.’

The official length of the Trans-Siberian line between Moscow and Vladivostok is 9,288 kilometres, making it the longest single-service railway in the world. As part of our itinerary we will also travel along the branch line at Lake Baikal and away from the main Trans-Siberian line when we head into Mongolia and its capital Ulaan Baatar.

26

Our classic Trans-Siberian Express tours on board the Golden Eagle between Moscow and Vladivostok take a leisurely two weeks. By the time your journey ends we will have passed through eight time zones, a third of the world’s total, and travelled an incredible distance of 6,500 miles (11,000 kilometres) through Russia and Mongolia.

THE GHAN Prepare for a holiday of unimaginable proportions as the legendary Ghan takes you deep into the heart of Australia. Enjoy the comfort and solitude of your private cabin, lose yourself in conversation with newfound travelling companions, or simply gaze out of the window taking inspiration from the ever changing landscape. And when the train stops along the way, the adventures begin. Take your time tapping into the rich creative soul of Adelaide. Experience the dramatic scenery of central Australia on the back of a camel and explore the ancient, awe-inspiring wonders of the Northern Territory. Regarded as one of the world’s greatest rail journeys, The Ghan delivers so much more than an extended train ride. It promises access to parts of Australia no other holiday can come close to – the perfect balance of comfort and adventure culminating in an experience that will move you in every sense of the word. Originally dubbed the Afghan Express, The Ghan train was named for the pioneering cameleers who blazed a permanent trail into the Red Centre of Australia more than 150 years ago. In 1980, the old Ghan rail track was abandoned in favour of a new standard-gauge rail line built with termite-proof concrete sleepers. The track was laid further to the west to mitigate the flooding problems encountered along the old route. It was always intended for The Ghan to one day travel from Adelaide through to the Northern Territory capital city of Darwin. With the completion of the Alice Springs to Darwin rail link, this dream became a reality. The Ghan embarked on its inaugural transcontinental journey on 1 February, 2004. Today, the north-south cross-country journey covers 2979 kilometres and encounters spectacular and diverse landscapes from the pastoral hues of the South Australian plains, the rusty reds of the MacDonnell Ranges and the tropical greens of Katherine and Darwin.

BLUE TRAIN AFRICA

78

N

LUXURY TRAINS

As time meandered from the 19th Century towards the dawn of the new era, a dream was born. A dream of harnessing steam technology to link Africa’s vast south to north, around the aweinspiring mountain ranges that dot the continent, through the apparently arid desert landscapes, over untamed savannah grasslands teeming with wildlife. From the Cape all the way to Cairo... all of this on parallel lines of tempered steel. It is from this dream that The Blue Train was born. Cairo was never to be, but the dreamers persevered and The Blue Train now traverses South Africa and its breath-taking scenery in a manner that befits the mystique that has grown around it. Kings and presidents have indulged on this magnificent, moving five-star “hotel-on-wheels”. From love-struck honeymooners, to adulated celebrities. And even ordinary folk who romanticise about a life of spectacular luxury, a life that has seemed tantalisingly out of reach. Until now...

Welcome aboard The Blue Train. Your unforgeable experience is about to begin… Luxury assumes a new dimension on The Blue Train which you will feel from the moment you step on board this newly re-furbished train, which has been synonymous with luxury and hospitality since 1946. Guests can expect personal and aentive service, a dedicated butler, sumptuous accommodation, sublime fine-dining and exquisite wines. The Blue Train offers scheduled and charter services. The scheduled route is from Pretoria to Cape Town or vice versa, and the charter routes are from either Pretoria to Durban or Pretoria to Hoedspruit.

THE BlUE TRAIN HISTORy

BlUE TRAIN ACCOMMODATION

Emanating from a fantasy of travelling from Africa’s southern- to northern most tips, The Blue Train was steam-rolled into being in the 1920s. The two original trains, known then as the Union Limited and the Union Express, meandered their way as far as the Great African Railway would allow – a bridge straddling the Zambezi River, showered by the “thunderous smoke” of the Victoria Falls – a trip taken by Former State President, Thabo Mbeki in 1998.

Suites The suite is an elegant spacious lounge by day and a sanctuary by night with goose down duvets and pillows. Private bathrooms offer marble floor and wall tiles, marble basins with gold fiings, along with a shower/bath and under-floor heating in both the bathroom and bedroom. All the suites have a writing desk, ideally positioned next to the window, where you can enjoy the view in style whilst puing pen to paper. Also provided are air-conditioning, radio/movie channels and a link to the driver's-eye-view camera. The GPS map on an overhead monitor means you can keep track of progress.

As news of the discovery of gold and diamonds travelled afar, thousands flocked to South Africa’s Witwatersrand – Ridge of White Waters – with a dream of digging their way to untold riches. The railway lines became utilitarian, ferrying society on the move. But the ridge’s mineral wealth soon funded a burgeoning upper-class, one that came to expect a more opulent mode of transport. And the Union carriages became standard-bearers of the easy-living heyday of the 1920s, boasting everything from card tables to ceiling fans, to hot and cold water on tap. Aer being pressed into military service during World War II and then reincarnated in 1946, the trains’ distinctive royal blue and cream shades gave rise to “those blue trains” intimations. It was in these shades that a legend was born, that The Blue Train would soon ride the rails to legend. A carriage-by-carriage refurbishment in the 70s and modernisation from steam to electricity and diesel in the 90s, defined this train as an unmatched experience of luxurious modern travel, and yet invoked the romance and history of its gliered past.

80

There are two types of suites. The Luxury Suite has either twin or double bedded options with a long, deep bath for slow, luxuriant soaking - a rare treat on a train. The Luxury Suite extends the choice of radio and movie channels even further, with a private digital entertainment centre and a selection of music CDs and bigscreen movies on DVD. The De Luxe Suite features twin beds with shower, or a double bed with bath tub and hand held shower. Note that De Luxe double bed suites are limited in number, and cannot be guaranteed.

Dining Car Here the reassuring weight of Sheffield cutlery and crystal glassware on crisp white linen set the tone for the delights to follow. Choose from two dinnertime siings, or dine in your suite. The dining car seats 42 people, with 2 siings for lunch and dinner. Each meal is accompanied by a selection of equally tasteful background music, ranging from smooth jazz to light classical to the mellow tones of the Soweto String Quartet. Lounge Car & Club Car Linking the private suites are two woodenpanelled cars - The Blue Train's Lounge and Club Cars are ideal for an apéritif, an interlude between meals, or an aer-dinner conversation. Smoking is permied in the Club Car. Entertainment includes cards, chess, or backgammon, or a volume from the library. In the main lounge car, high tea is served each aernoon. A video camera on the front locomotive gives a driver's eye view of the scenery and is shown on a screen in the club car and on a TV channel in the suites. The burnished surroundings of the club car is the single public area where smoking is permied, this being at the back of the train. Conference Car The conference car (an observation car) is the ideal seing for meetings, seminars, think-tanks or get-togethers with a difference. With sufficient notice, the conference car can be adapted for smaller and less formal sessions. With full business facilities, plush lounge seating and breath-taking panoramas of the passing countryside, this is an experience that no client or colleague will ever forget. This car also has a paraplegic suite. Elegant Lounges In the event that you are able to whisk yourself away from your luxurious cocoon of comfort, The Blue Train offers two convivial spaces in which to build friendships over a beverage of choice. The Club Car, ideally situated behind the train’s engines offers the feel of a burnished, woodpanelled gentleman’s club where you are free to enjoy a Cuban cigar which we serve aer dinner to round off a perfect evening. Wind down and relax with cognac or any drink of your choice.

82

Whether you’re aer a game of backgammon, chess or cards, the lure of the big screen or a tome from the library’s selection, a fascinating chat with the barman or simply a solitary reverie of the starlit skies, then the Club Car is your ideal seing. The beautifully designed Lounge Car, conveniently situated in the middle of the train, is an ideal venue to enjoy the charming view of the countryside, with its windows perfectly framing the ever-changing panoramas and interrupted only by rare works from some of Southern Africa’s finest artists – or an occasional gentle reminder from the barman that your glass needs topping up. Breeze into the Lounge Car for aernoon High Tea… a traditional English ritual of taste and aroma that is enhanced by the classic, elegant opulence of this carriage, or wander in aer your five-course dinner banquet for another glass of award-winning wine or a taste of fine Port to round off your perfect evening. Boutique Shop As the wheels of The Blue Train transport you to an era of untempered luxury and through breathtaking landscapes – both of which will become indelibly etched and cherished memories – you may wish for a more tangible reminder of this opportune time. For this reason, The Blue Train is home to an exclusive boutique, an oasis that promises to satiate your desire for a fiing memento. Choose from a range of quality items that bear the elegant herald of the “vehicle of your dreams”. From golf shirts to playing cards, from key rings to cufflinks to lavish, leather gis, these one-of-akind souvenirs will brand themselves into memory, and bring your Blue Train experience to life all over again.. The boutique limits its clientele to two per viewing, ensuring you of the best individual aention. Should you purchase a valuable keepsake and would prefer greater security than the safe in your suite, the boutique will store the item securely until you are ready to take possession of it.

BLUE TRAIN ITINERARIES The real star of this journey is the African landscape, hence only one stop on the northbound journey and one stop on the southbound journey. CAPE TOWN TO PRETORIA Matjiesfontein (Northbound journey) Founded by an immigrant Scotsman at a minor railway stop in 1884, Matjiesfontein became a fashionable oasis for the rich and privileged, renowned for a climate beneficial for chest complaints. Visited by Lord Randolph Churchill and Rudyard Kipling alike, it was also home to Olive Schreiner, one of South Africa's first feminist writers.

84

PRETORIA TO CAPE TOWN Kimberley (Southbound journey): Following departure from Pretoria and aer brunch and high tea, the Blue Train arrives at Kimberley Station. Guests visit the railway museum, followed by an old tram for a ride down to the Open Mine Museum and a tour of the mine. The tour includes a chance to win a diamond. Guests are taken onto an enclosed ramp on the edge of the Kimberley hole. Guests then return to the train for dinner, overnight and the remainder of the journey to Cape Town. Route & Map This is a 27-hour journey of 1,600 kilometres (994 miles) each way, through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery offered by the African sub-continent. Southbound, the Blue Train departs Pretoria at 08:30 and arrives Cape Town at 13:00 the following day. En route to Cape Town there is an excursion in Kimberley, where we take a step back in time to the days of the diamond rush. Northbound, the Blue Train leaves Cape Town at 08.30 and arrives Pretoria at 13:30 the next day. It stops at the historic town Matjiesfontein, where guests can visit the famous Lord Milner Hotel and the old car museum. Guests must check in at least 1 hour before departure at The Blue Train lounges in Pretoria and Cape Town. www.bluetrain.co.za

OBSERVATION CARS The Observation Cars were originally A-28 dining cars built to drawings by Mr W Day. Permission was granted by SAR to run Rovos Rail’s observation cars at the back of the trains, enabling the enlargement of the windows and the construction of unique open-air balconies.

90

Coaches 225 NILE, 226 MODDER and 220 KEI entered service between 1935 and 1938 and stayed with SAR until 1983 when they were sold to Mr S Krok of Johannesburg. They were transported to the Jewish Guild Sports Club grounds in Morningside, Sandton, to become the nucleus of a novel restaurant. Rovos Rail purchased them in 1988 and restored them to

service as observation cars. During 2010, a 1960 third-class sleeper 6320 was rebuilt as an observation car and has proved a great success. The ride is also a lile beer than its counterparts as the bogies are the more modern, commonwealth type. DINING CARS The Classic and Edwardian trains travel with beautiful pre-1940 dining cars. Two A-22 twin diners, characterised by their carved roofsupporting pillars and arches, derived their twin designation from running with a dedicated kitchen car. Coach 195 SHANGANI was found in a scrap yard in 1986; her severely dilapidated condition required 18 months of painstaking restoration.

LUXURY TRAINS

Tragically this coach was destroyed in a fire one dismal night in 2008. Coach 197 LETABA was acquired in 1987; she became the third dining car restored to service. Coach 205 UMHLALI was purchased in Johannesburg and was fully restored by 2006. In 1936, SAR introduced the A-28/A-29 series of dining cars. This was a big step forward as they had fly-up, fixed seats, large picture windows with ventilators above and no pillars, giving clean modern lines to the interior and exterior. The first batch of four entered traffic in 1936 and Rovos has two in the fleet. Coach 232 UMVOTI was bought by Rovos in 1998. Kitchen car AA-34 286 was sold to Rovos in 1985. Her dining car 231 ZAMBEZI was extracted with difficulty

from a shopping centre and returned to service in 2000. During restoration, the ceiling of the coach was improved with extensive use of wooden trimmings while buon-leather seats added opulence. It was fiing that they were reunited several years later. In 2010, dining cars 6447 and 5274 were added to the consist. The first was built from a second-class sleeper, while 5274 was rusted through and a third-class sleeper conversion fondly referred to by the staff as the ‘Rust Bucket’.

LOUNGE CARS Expansion plans in 1995 saw the Classic trains move from 42 to 72 guests, making a second lounge car a necessity. Coaches 3215, 8337 and 3293 were originally modern steel-sided sleeper cars. They were stripped and refurbished to create comfortable non-smoking lounge cars, which are placed in the middle of the trains usually ahead of the dining cars. Deep sofas and wingback chairs make for an extremely comfortable car in which guests nodding off for an aernoon snooze are a common sight. The lounge cars are used as lecture rooms on the annual Dar es Salaam journeys and also house a small, discreet gi shop. As with all the service

92

cars the lounges are air-conditioned, yet the windows can be opened allowing in the sights, sounds and scents of Africa. There are few, if any, luxury trains anywhere in the world with this special feature, which has proved of particular benefit when a train has been chartered for a Steam Safari – steam enthusiasts like to enjoy the full majesty of a working locomotive and windows that open are top priority. This feature, coupled with luxury and service as well as a selection of Rovos Rail steam locomotives, makes this a truly unique opportunity to sample long-distance travel behind steam traction.

LUXURY TRAINS CLUB CARS The Club Car area was created by demolishing the end suite in a deluxe carriage. This was done specifically to host the smokers on the train in a public area and also as an overflow facility adjoining the Observation Car. With a glass passage wall, guests can comfortably watch the scenery on both sides of the train. ROYAL SUITES The Royal Suites, each of which take up half a carriage, are spacious and elegant measuring ±16 sq metres in size. Each has its own private lounge area and full bathroom with Victorian bath and separate shower. The epitome of luxury with handsome wood panelling and period Edwardian features, the air-conditioned suites accommodate two people offering the option of side-by-side twin or spacious double beds. In the en-suite bathrooms, original fiings combine with the

modern technology of hot showers, hair dryers and shaver plugs. The very spacious suites offer passengers the opportunity to travel in privacy, comfort and luxury, with fiings and facilities that are of the highest standard. All are equipped with a writing surface and a personal safe for valuables. There is also a bar fridge filled with beverages of the passengers’ choice and room service is available 24 hours a day.

Mary Gostelow’s

RAIL JOURNEYS: EA

Day 1 Monday 12 August 2013

134

Bangkok to Singapore I merely arrived at Bangkok’s Hua Lam station by hotel limo, to join people from all over the world, a few other singles but mostly couples or more. Honeymooners, uncles and nieces, fathers and daughters, mothers and daughters. Bangkok station is not as salubrious as, say, Shanghai’s Hongqaio but never mind. The Eastern&Oriental train is managed by Orient-Express and they have an agreeable pre-boarding waiting room. People’s heavy baggage was taken away to be stored onboard as there is limited room in the cabins, or state rooms or suites or whatever you want to call them, but more of that anon. While waiting I looked at the map. We were going to travel 1,200 miles, from Bangkok south to Malaysia and across the causeway to Singapore, a total of three nights, with half a day tacked on each side. Ah time to board. We walked, as if pre-school darlings, around the station to the gleaming train, all 22 carriages of it. The stainless steel frame of the train was built in Japan in 1971, by Nippon Sharyo & Hitachi. The client, New Zealand Railways, ran it as the Silver Star for 20 years from 1971, aer which it was sold to the Orient-Express visionary, James Sherwood, a train fanatic. He shipped it to Singapore and had the interiors most beautifully

designed and hand-craed. There is marquetry of cherry, elm, rosewood and teak. Carpets were handmade in Thailand, and curtain pelmets were embroidered in Malaysia. The train launched September 19th, 1993, Check in, 1745 (not 1750 as stated) sudden jerk I choose 1830 rather than 2100 for dinner no choice, 4 courses. Tonight I have foie gras terrine with a curved tuile, a plain salad instead of a Thai soup, New Zealand lamb rack, and a frozen coconut mousse. Gevrey-Chambertain 2008 I am in a State Room, middle category. (lowest is Pullman, with sofa right-angles to window, converted into upper and lower bunks – there are also 2 pres S w/bigger bathrooms) By day, one outward-facing long sofa parallel with the train, and, by the window, a single ‘sofa bed’, an upright chair and a pouffe that holds spare linens. Two UK sockets under a folding table. wall panels cherry wood trellis infilled with elm burr. Overhead 2 big brass racks. beige curtains, and venetian blinds, at two big round-cornered windows, with pelmets embroidered in Malaysia. Carpet is hand-tued, Thai. Overall colours so blue-teal and mushroom.

LUXURY TRAINS

ASTERN & ORIENTAL

All linens and food and drink for this journey have to be boarded in Bangkok – my cabin has three sets of linens, wrapped a day-at-a-time and stored in a square pouffe on wheels that doubles as table for breakfast and aernoon tea. There are 55 crew, including three engineers with spare parts, and security who man the last-car, opensided Observation Car 24/7 – they eat where and when they can. I have learned more than enough for one day. To bed. The day-time wall-set seee in D-4 has been flipped over, 180 degrees, to form a bed with finest white linens, and two pillows. A logo embroidered blue coon robe, with matching slippers, is neatly folded on top. Day 2 Tuesday 13 August Daylight just before 0600. At 0630 I head along four cars to the rear observation car, imagining no-one there apart from the two Malay security guards. 0630 we leave Wang Po to go over 300m wood trestle bridge. Breakfast, brought to the cabin, 3 Bonne Maman jams, , canteloupe in a tall sundae glass, two squares of buer in a silver capped container, linen-wrapped, a Danish, a really good croissant and two dried fruit-filled brown rolls, also yoghurt

with aloe. Good coffe in a tall Regency pot with the train’s logo on it. 0900 River Kwai Bridge, we get off for sightseeing plus a coach ride to Thailand-Burma Railway centre entrance Bht120 (Bridge over The River Kwai, 1957, based on novel by Pierre Boulle) 415kms, of which 100ks in YGN this stretch of Mekong river name-changed to Kwai because of the movie 1100 leave Kanchanaburi We are called through to lunch. There are two seatings, 11.30 or one, and the sensible majority goes early. Chan, the outstandingly computer-like and charming Maitre d’, makes sure that everyone is handed a reservation card for the next meal – he is generally brilliant at matching people with people, although I still have to find out why I was put next to a 20-year old Swiss woman with limited English who, when she graduated, with French majors, had the main interest of having lots of babies. Today I am in Adisorn, one of three exquisitely wood-embellished dining cars, all with crisp linens, tall-stemmed cut crystal and floraledged local china, and French (Peugeot) salt and pepper mills. Lunch is three courses, including a labour-intensive dessert. LUXURY REDEFINED

I can see the chef standing in the corridor minutely inspecting, and ‘passing’, every dish as it is carried out of the galley, and boy do they work hard in there. Where is the storage space? How on earth do they produce, and store, the bite-sized aernoon tea items? This is once again served in your apartment (sounds beer than ‘room’). My velour pouffe is covered with devices, plus cords for MacBook Pro, iPad and iPhone – the two sockets below a small folding table, between my two windows, are both US outlets. My aernoon tea tray is therefore placed on my bed, now in its day-form as fied sofa. Some people presumably eat all this. Few seem to be going out of their way to take exercise… But you can keep fit. At some times the rear Observation Car is, apart from the two omnipresent Security, deserted and you can use the Car’s bronze rails for ballet exercises. I have taken onboard the two empty 50cl Highland Spring water boles I now always travel with. Filled up with water from my ensuite’s bathroom, I can use them as weights. For morning floor exercises, down on my hand-tued Thai carpet, I find that by hoisting the easy-chair and the velour pouffe up on to the bed-sofa, I can just do necessary horizontal stretches without sustaining bruises. The same cannot be said, as two large bruises, one on each lower arm testify, for walking

136

the 22 carriages end to end. Tip for those of you lucky enough to be taking future trips on the Eastern&Oriental, take a long-sleeved top, first to combat onboard air conditioning and, equally importantly, for walking the narrow corridors when being bounced from side to side like a yo-yo. 1500 arrive in Hua Hin I go to the bar. Gins, Gordon’s and Bombay, are $11, Johnnie Walker Black label 15, The Macallan 16, Hennessy XO 25. Glass wines, Maipo (Conch y Toro 2012) Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot, both 2012, $1. Roederer $18 a glass (bole of Dom Perignon is $560). I try an E&O Cocktail, gin, maraschino, lychee, pineapple juice, fresh lime, green apple syrup. All alcohol and boutique purchases, by the way, will be discreetly seled on the final night, and American Express is accepted. It is time to change for dinner. There is room for me, but not a sumo, in the shower, which produces instant hot water (toiletries are Bulgari, greentop, and thick white towels are embroidered with the E&O logo). Right, I am ready, for dinner in this luxury hotel-on-wheels. Valentin, as always, wears black tie. A Japanese couple wear kimonos. The St Martin’s fashion graduate who is now working back home in Milan is chic as ever. The set menu

LUXURY TRAINS

tonight starts with an amuse, then foie gras terrine with a curved tuile, a plain salad instead of a Thai soup, New Zealand lamb rack, and a frozen coconut mousse. I have a glass of GevreyChambertain 2008. There are once-off entertainers. An astrologer boarded at one point, telling people’s futures in a library that is surprisingly well equipped for its size. Mike plays the piano nightly in the bar, and local dancers boarded in Buerworth. I watch for a time but have to leave the rest of the party to it – one mostly-Australian passenger complement apparently ‘emptied’ the onboard ice supplies at seven (a.m.) on one journey. And then it is, once again, bed, for another rock-abye-adult/baby sleep. Day 3 Wednesday 14 August 0725 Padang Besar for immigration, switch to Malay time There is something mesmerising about standing in the Observation Car watching over a thousand miles of rail stretching behind. This is one continuous houseparty here onboard. Right at the moment only a Swiss who lives in Shanghai is out here and he tells me how he has sold his home

back home, puing all his goods in storage, to be free. Free as a bird. Funnily enough we see dogs, and locals living by the track, and the occasional Buddhist monk, but no birds at all. This line was the same 20 years ago, when this train first started, as it is now. 1430 Buerworth, get off train. 1445 coach to George Town, E&O, rickshaws, visit to Khoo Kongsai clan temple 1715 back to station 1730 leave Buerworth 1830 cross Bukit Merah Lake My lovely, reliable aendant Chaiya - want to take him as personal Sancho Panza - insists I go to bed properly, here. He has used the last of the three sets of linens from my pouffe, made up my bed, says he will wake me an hour before we arrive with coffee. He does just that – the coffee is ultrastrong, full of flavour and comes with a purple orchid. We pull in, he gets out, with the Rimowa Porsche wheelie, which he hands to one of the two hotel staff waiting on an otherwise-deserted platform in an otherwise-deserted station. It is 1.30 (a.m). The train continues: 1155 cross Johor Causeway 1200 Woodlands for Singapore. LUXURY REDEFINED
