GERMANY WIN IN WORLD CHAMPIONS GERMANY WON THE FIFA 2017 CONFEDERATIONS CUP WITH A 1-0 VICTORY OVER CHILE IN THE FINAL AT ST. PETERSBURG STADIUM. Stindl scored his third goal of the tournament on 20 minutes when Timo Werner squared for him to slot into an open net with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo already commied. In the end, that was the difference between the Germans and a spirited Chile side, who found huge support among the Russian fans. For the final match, the ‘Tournament of Champions’ returned to where it began, St. Petersburg Stadium, which had already provided the stage for Russia’s 2-0 opening day victory over New Zealand on June 17.

Back then the entire ground were cheering for Russia’s red, but for the final, the support in the crowd was certainly for the red of Chile, ‘La Roja’ having become a cult favorite among locals for their garish outfits and vocal support. During the closing ceremony before the game, gratitude was expressed towards each national team and the Confed Cup volunteers in the form of banners displaying a ‘Thank You’ message in the six different languages of the eight participating nations.

LUXURY RUSSIA

N ST. PETERSBURG Previous tournament winners were honored and there was even authentic music from the participating countries, including a Mexican mariachi band. When the game kicked off, Charles Aranguiz went close for Chile but he was denied by Antonio Ruediger with a perfectly timed tackle in the area. Arturo Vidal then banged the rebound against Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the Germany goal.

It turned out to be a costly mistake when moments later Timo Werner took advantage of indecision in the Chile defense to steal the ball and draw Claudio Bravo off his line. With the Chile keeper fully commied, Werner was able to square to Stindl to calmly place the ball into the open net with 20 minutes played.

The goal came entirely against the run of play and drew a few deflated looks from the pro-Chile crowd, and was enough to make sure Germany went into the break leading the game. The second half brought incidents of controversy, again involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. When Gonzalo Jara appeared to elbow Werner on the jaw, Serbian referee Milorad Mazic jogged off the pitch to consult VAR. Aer a few minutes, Mazic eventually returned to the field of play and showed Jara only a yellow, rather than the red many had expected.

VAR reared its head again when Alexis Sanchez went down in the German penalty area. Mazic seemed to allow play to continue so Vidal could shoot, but his effort was tipped over the bar by Ter Stegen. The referee again stopped play to review the incident, although no penalty was given. Tempers began to fray when Joshua Kimmich squared up to Bayern Munich teammate Vidal, both players eventually being booked. Then when Emre Can fell on top of the ball he was hounded by Chile players who grabbed and shunted him to release it. Can was booked for his troubles.

LUXURY RUSSIA

Chile continued to press in the game’s final stages, and when Angelo Sagal blazed the ball over with the goal gaping on 83 minutes it seemed to sum up Chile’s luck in front of goal. The final chance for Chile came in the form of a powerful Alexis Sanchez free kick, which was pounded away by Ter Stegen. Five minutes of added time were not enough for Chile to rescue anything from the final and Germany won their first ever Confederations Cup. German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen was named man of the final, and German captain Julian Draxler the overall player of the tournament.

Chile ‘keeper Claudio Bravo won the golden glove, while the golden boot went to German striker Timo Werner for his three goals and two assists. The victory means that Germany now hold the World Cup, Confederations Cup and European U21 Championship titles.

The stars from Australia, Cameroon, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Chile, Germany and Russia were all clearly inspired by the brand-new stadiums at the biggest sporting event of the year so far. Prior to the commencement of the FIFA Confederations Cup , Saint Petersburg Stadium, Kazan Arena, Spartak Stadium and Fisht Stadium all organised test games ahead of the Tournament of Champions. Almost 6,000 volunteers also underwent training in Volunteer Centres to get ready to welcome guests.

The transport, accommodation and tourism infrastructure was meticulosly prepared to ensure people coming for the Confederations Cup arrived as comfortably, safely and enjoyably as possible. And lovers of the sport, both from Russia and around the world, will enjoy great football from the best teams in the world, champions of their continents.”

THE WINTER PALACE IS A FORMER IMPERIAL PALACE AND CURRENTLY FORMS PART OF THE MAIN MUSEUM COMPLEX OF THE HERMITAGE.

The elegant, monumental palace is a striking monument of the Baroque style in mid-18thcentury Russian art. The palace is a brilliant example of the synthesis of architecture and decorative plastic art. All the facades are embellished by a two-tier colonnade. Forming a complex rhythm of verticals, the columns soar upwards, and this motion embraces the numerous statues and vases on the roof. The abundance of moulded decoration – fanciful cornices and window architraves, mascarons, cartouches, rocailles, and a variety of pediments – creates an extremely rich play of light and shade that invest the building's appearance with magnificence.

LUXURY RUSSIA

Developing upon one and the same architectural motif, Rastrelli gave each of the four facades of the palace a different structural rhythm. The southern facade, overlooking the square, has a formal grandeur. Here the architect pierced the building with three arches to create a grand entrance into the courtyard and accentuated it with the vertical elements of paired columns. The majestic northern facade, giving the impression of an endless colonnade, faces the broad expanse of the Neva. The western facade, across from the Admiralty, is reminiscent of the composition of a countryside palace with a small courtyard. The monumental eastern facade with its massive side blocks forming a large cour d’honneur is turned to Millionnaya Street, where the mansions of the nobility stood.

For 150 years the palace served as an imperial residence. In November 1917, aer the October Revolution, it was declared a museum. The exhibition placed in the palace includes grand halls and chambers, collections of the antiquities of Eurasia and the East, as well as collections of European and Eastern paintings, sculptures, and decorative art works. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLE CLASSICISM ARCHITECTURE, THE ALEXANDER PALACE WAS THE FAVOURITE HOME OF SEVERAL GENERATIONS OF THE ROMANOVS FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY.

The palace is considered one of the best creations of the architect Giacomo Quarenghi who built it for Catherine II’s eldest grandson, the future Emperor Alexander I. The palace was the last home of the family of Emperor Nicholas II, who made it his permanent residence in 1905, making it the centre of statehood in Russia. To feel the city’s soul Modern St. Petersburg, crisscrossed by numerous rivers and canals, stands on more than 100 islands, which are linked to one another by more than 400 bridges. This is why the city is often called “the Venice of the North”. Nearly every building in the downtown is considered to be a historic monument, hence the city’s definition — “open-air museum”. Its historical centre, palace and park ensembles are inscribed in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Churches and cathedrals Saint Petersburg was planned as a Westoriented city and has always been renowned for its hospitality. Peter the Great encouraged foreigners, especially from Europe, to come to the new capital: they brought a new way of life, knowledge and traditions. To make foreigners feel comfortable in the city Peter the Great and his successors paid much attention to the construction of churches and cathedrals for people of various religions.

Though Saint Petersburg is known as a city of different creeds, it is the Orthodoxy that has long been the official religion of Russia. That is why special emphasis was laid on orthodox churches. The world’s best architects built churches and cathedrals in Saint Petersburg. Sublimity of St.Isaac’s Cathedrals, proportion of the Nikolsky (St.Nicholas’) Cathedral, smartness of the Church of Resurrection of Christ (Spas-na-Krovi) always attract visitors of the city. The beauty and splendor of their inner decorations make indelible impressions upon guests’ minds.

To immerse yourself in St. Petersburg romantics During the “white nights” the Petersburgers flock to the banks of the Neva to see the sun set. The “white nights” period lasts from May to July. Countless festivals and concerts are held in the parks and on the city’s squares and embankments: Scarlet Sails school leavers festival, River Carnival, Festival of Ice Crackers, Festivals of garden art. During such days the city marks its anniversary – on May 27th. Every day from May to October sometime after two o’clock in the morning the multi-tonne wings of the bridges swing gently upwards to let vessels on the river pass.

The fortress is a historic landmark and its curtain walls and bastions are now home to the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg. Legend has it that on 16 May 1703, Peter the Great, accompanied by his retinue, took a boat to the

island, got a spade, cut out two strips of the turf, made them into a cross and ordered construction to be started on that spot. The future fortress was given the name of St. Petersburg. The Peter and Paul Fortress was originally built in one year out of wood and soil; it then took another 30 years to reconstruct it in stone.
