PAGANI HU ITALIAN HYPERCAR LUXURY CARS

The concept was born in 2003, the year of the introduction of the Zonda S Roadster. The early 2000s were prosperous for the world of supercars. The commitment of big car manufacturers have contributed to the rise of extraordinary cars like the Bugai Veyron, Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari Enzo, Mercedes McLaren SLR. This context led the team to make several observations concerning the future of the Zonda

4

and what could be a new Pagani. Since the original design of the Zonda was done in the early 90s the first thought was that it was now an obsolete project and we decided to imagine the car totally different in form, dimension, dynamics and technology, all this without losing the essence of their approach, to follow a concept born in the Renaissance where Leonardo da Vinci told us that art and science are disciplines that need to walk alongside. The eternal element air in all its forms, especially wind, became determining in defining

UAYRA

the concept and it was a great inspiration, as it is ever present in our lives: a jet turbine, the silence of a glider... the elegance of the wind movements but also the violence and force that it can unleash. The Huayra is made of more than 4000 components (engine and gearbox not included). To create them and put them together requires creativity, patience and passion that was shared with a fantastic young team and with the most competent partner in all sectors.

SEVEN YEARS OF HARD WORK HAS LED TO THE BIRTH OF THE HUAYRA, PROJECT NAME C9.

In defining the size, they immediately thought of a car that would be longer than the Zonda, a track increased by 70 mm, a cabin position shied 40 mm to the back and even more spacious. The silhouee should be so, easy to read and form itself from lean and sleek lines that have a clear beginning and an end. During these five years wthe best compromise was found working on 8 scale models and 2 full scale models, as well as hundreds of drawings.

world luxury | DAILY | Issue 7 |

The ideas were of including elliptical shapes reminding of our brand in the front and at the back, keeping the central exhaust as the completion of the line of the canopy, the line starting at the headlight area that continues and ends into the air intake. We also thought from the beginning of active aerodynamics. Flaps that are activated according to the study of results gathered through calculations and aerodynamic testing. The whole car is shaped as a wing so it was necessary to create a high front to reduce the length of the upper part of this wing to counteract li. The active suspension in the front and the 4 flaps allow to optimally balance the drag coefficient and downforce. Mercedes-AMG has created a truly unique and lightweight engine, a twin turbo with 730 HP and 1000 Nm of torque that perfectly complements the car giving a feeling that has motivated our research: that of the brute force of an airplane taking off.

6

The main focus was in a power delivery that was

linear and not with lag, because that could potentially create safety problems or a continuous operation of electronic driving aids. Mercedes-AMG already 5 years ago thought about the coming environmental restrictions by creating a 12-cylinder engine that is at the peak of efficiency in terms of CO2 and consumption. Pirelli has created a very progressive tyre with a exceptional grip in all situations and with low rolling friction. Every aspect of safety was treated taking into account the dynamic by which most accidents with high performance rear engined cars occur. While developing the C9 we witnessed the evolution of the different models of the Zonda and it showed us that the Zonda wasn’t obsolete as I had originally feared. The Zonda R has been a key laboratory for the Huayra. The team was able to work on many projects at the same time driving on different tracks that occasionally came to meet by sharing engineering concepts, materials, safety and scientific or design studies.

Horacio Pagani “ Building an object as complex and full of state of the art solutions such as the Huayra not only takes brilliant minds, but real artists. We are fortunate to have technology leaders amongst our partners; redefining the limits, finding newsolutions, processes and technologies is wrien in their DNA. “ More than partners, I would say they are members of our family, sharing with Pagani the fundamental values, dreams and the passion. The Pagani Huayra is a testimony of this, an ambassador of technological excellence for who has contributed to transform a dream into reality. “From the power, efficiency and reliability of the AMG power plant, the aluminium jewels carved from a solid block by ASPA, the performance and safety guaranteed by the combination of the Brembo CCM brakes and the Pirelli P Zero™ tires, the feather light exhaust system in Titanium and Inconel by MHG, to the creation of interiors in sustainable leather by the Dani Group.”

LUXURY FOOTWEAR

SALVATORE FERRAGAMO SHOEMAKER TO THE STARS Salvatore Ferragamo is known as the “shoemaker to the stars.” Back in the late 1920's before most of the big names in Italian fashion were even born, Salvatore Ferragamo was craing beautiful shoes for some of the most famous feet in Hollywood. He was born in Bonito, near Naples, one of fourteen children. By the time he was nine he knew that he wanted to make shoes for a living, and convinced his peasant father (who considered shoemaking too lowly a profession) to allow him to move to Naples and become an apprentice. The wave of Italian immigrants to the United States had not yet ended, and by fourteen the youngster was on a slow boat to America.

8

He returned to Italy and in 1927 he established his headquarters in Florence. From there, he continued his work for the American public. In the 1930's and 1940's, the history of shoes was marked by Ferragamo's creations. In 1938 he gained the nickname "Shoemaker to the Stars" when he made Roman sandals for the Cecil de Mille epics (inspired by his traveling experiences in Egypt). Shortly aerwards Salvatore Ferragamo patented his first invention in the world of fashion: his strong but light cork wedge. Widely imitated and recreated in many different materials, shapes andr colors, the wedge-heeled shoe of Ferragamo made a huge impact on the world of fashion. But it wasn't the only one.

The year 1947 marked the launch of Ferragamo's Invisible Sandals. Made of water-colored nylon thread, the shoes took some geing used to but resulted in Ferragamo becoming the first footwear designer to win Neiman Marcus Prize at the Fashion Oscars. Ferragamo's relationship with the cinema never ended. When Marilyn Monroe declared “I don’t know who invented high heels but all women owe him a lot,” she was probably referring to Ferragamo, who was the creator of the famous stileo heels with metal reinforcements that she used to wear and which he designed especially for the star. The list of stars who wore Ferragamo is a long one including Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Sophia Lauren and Lauren Bacall. He was still a young man when he died in 1960, but his wife Wanda and his children have carried on the tradition, each taking their place in this familyowned business.

everyone started to buy it. The iconic design was reworked in new versions and materials, such as the plexiglass used in the Nineties, and is still very much on-trend. In recent decades, the group has launched a ready-to- wear line that is simple but luxurious and features buer-so leather garments, as well as accessories and jewelry lines. In 1998, they began a collaboration with Luxoica to produce a sunglasses and eyewear collection which was followed by the Ferragamo Perfumes division in 2001. Nowadays, the company is quoted on the Stock Exchange, has recorded a yearly turnover of over 600 million Euros and has more than 500 flagship stores. Salvatore Ferragamo's dream was one day to “dress women from head to toe." He would be very proud to know that his family fashion house now does exactly that. www.ferragamo.com

It was in 1965, under Fiamma di San Giuliano Ferragamo’s supervision, that the revitalized Ferragamo group started producing its famous bags. Four years later, the accessory known as the “gancino” made its first appearance in the catwalk. The gancino handbag soon became famous and

Alberto Meda

In 1920 Magistrei was born in Milan, the city in which he graduated in architecture in 1945, and where his professional career has spun its story ever since, chiefly in the fields of architecture, town planning and industrial design. Furniture, lamps and other objects that he designed may be found all over the world and the most important design museums have given exhibitions in his honour and kept examples of his work in their permanent collections. He started designing for Cassina in 1960, and from that date on his signature is to be found on very many products. We recall in particular the Maralunga sofa of 1973 and the Nuvola Rossa (1977) bookcase, which are still indisputable international best-sellers and have provoked hordes of imitations which have not been able to echo even faintly the success of the originals. www.vicomagistrei.it

Alberto Meda, born 1945 in Tremezzina, Italy, studied mechanical engineering at the Milan Polytechnic. From 1972 to 1979 he was technical director for Kartell, aer which he worked as a freelance designer for companies including Alias, Alessi, Cinelli, Colombo Design, Ideal Standard, Luceplan, Legrand, Mandarina Duck, Omron Japan, Philips, Olivei and Vitra. Between 1981 and 1985 he also served as a project consultant for Alfa Romeo. From 1983 to 1987, Meda taught industrial technology around the world. Alberto Meda has worked together with Vitra since 1994. During this time, his elegant designs for office chairs and a variety of tables have made a significant contribution to the success of Vitra's Office Collection. www.albertomeda.com

LUXURY PENS

MONTE THE ULTIMATE WRITING INSTRUMENT

Founded in 1912 as a “Manifaura pennini d’oro e penne stilografiche” (“Manufacturer of gold nibs and fountain pens”) Montegrappa has been manufacturing writing implements. Montegrappa – originally known as ELMO – benefied from a pool of local talents, a workforce able to produce finely craed objects, with style, with panache and with a drive to achieve excellence. Montegrappa’s factory is located on the bank of the River Brenta, the river winding through the town of Bassano del Grappa. Montegrappa’s geography and its Italian heritage are important elements of the company’s persona. ‘Italian-ness’ is at the heart of Montegrappa tradition. It defines the brand philosophy, its aitudes, its style. Almost immediately aer its birth, the Bassano factory found itself in a key position during the First World War. Its location was fortuitous, for Bassano was a key military position, and it would be marked by key bales toward the end of the

18

conflict. Among the many soldiers who used ELMO pens to write leers home were two celebrated American writers, then acting as war correspondents. Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos were both volunteer ambulance drivers at the front. The eloquent and evocative communiqués they sent from the front were recorded with the finely produced writing equipment manufactured in Bassano. Montegrappa has evolved from a writing instrument company with over a 100 years of heritage to a luxury lifestyle company. Living the Montegrappa Lifestyle has seen some of the most renowned icons give their endorsement to the brand. The Montegrappa Lifestyle is where old-meets-new, street-meets-boardroom, fashion-meets-function – the rules have changed to encourage a new freedom and crosspollination. Salvador Dalí stands side-by-side with Quincy Jones, Pelé kicks a ball to Ayrton Senna, the tradition harmonises with Hip-Hop.Through the ensuing decades, Montegrappa has produced

GRAPPA numerous models, now highly collectible. Montegrappa pens have played their part in history, for signing documents during key moments in the 20th Century. Boris Yeltsin gave his Dragon pen to Vladimir Putin on 2nd January 2000, and with this pen he symbolically handed over his power to him. Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev signs all official documents with the Montegrappa Extra 1930. Consolidating its position as the premier manufacturer of luxury pens, Montegrappa has produced a continuing flow of limited editions, commemorating events, locales and individuals.

Highly desirable pens such as the coveted Dragon have in turn aracted and inspired notable collectors. In 2010, France’s President, Nicolas Sarkozy, join the distinguished gathering of heads-of-state, popes, royalty, actors, musicians, artists, sportsmen, top models, writers and celebrities who have been proud owners of Montegrappa pens during its first century. To name a few, his fellow Montegrappa users include Vladimir Putin, Silvio Berlusconi, His Holiness John Paul II, His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Al Pacino, Zinedine Zidane, Naomi Campbell, Paulo Coelho and countless others.

VERSACE A designer to celebrities and royalty such as Princess Diana, Gianni Versace brought vitality and art to an industry considered out of touch with the street. Versace became known for his glamorous styles, producing a range of siren dresses that became his trademark. He oen used innovative materials such as aluminum mesh or cuing-edge techniques like "neo-couture" laser technology to fuse leather and rubber. The head of Medusa was also a recurring image on many of his clothing items and accessories. He launched his first couture collection in 1989 and added two clothing lines, Versus and Instante, to his business in the '90s.

26

One of his most famous creations was a black dress held together at the sides by gold safety pins; worn by Elizabeth Hurley at a movie premiere in 1994, the dress helped make the actress a star. Versace developed strong relationships with a number of stars and supermodels, including Elton John, Madonna and Naomi Campbell. As Anna Wintour told The New York Times, Versace "was the first to realize the value of celebrity in the front row, and the value of the supermodel, and put fashion on an international media platform." www.versace.com

EXCELSIOR HOT

A GLITTERING REFLECTIO Owned by Katara Hospitality, this Milanese landmark recently emerged from a meticulous, all-encompassing renovation of the historic building, whilst adding a new contemporary wing. Formerly known as “Palace Gallia”, the hotel is strongly rooted in Milanese history, located in the heart of the new Porta Nuova district. Excelsior Hotel Gallia is the latest gem to be unveiled by The Luxury Collection as part of a multi-million Euro investment to restore the brand’s most iconic European hotels. Excelsior Hotel Gallia comprises two buildings – the fully restored historic palace and a new modern wing with a façade that resembles a delicate steel and glass curtain. The striking juxtaposition is inspired by the hotel’s luminous past and the emerging skyline of the Porta Nuova area. Guests entering the hotel are welcomed by the dazzling sight of a custom-made 30-metre Murano glass chandelier created by De Majo, depicting a waterfall of 180 light cylinders which

The historical lobby pays tribute to notable Milanese architecture of the 1930s, such as La Scala Theatre, Viorio Emanuele Gallery and Villa Necchi Campiglio. The public spaces have been outfied by B&B Italia using aluminium, glass and marble. Excelsior Hotel Gallia features 235 luxurious guest rooms, including 53 suites. LUXURY WATCHES

PANERAI

1860 —Giovanni Panerai opens his watchmaker's shop on Ponte alle Grazie in Florence: serving not only as a shop and workshop but also as the city's first watchmaking school, Officine Panerai's history begins here. 1950 — The evolution from Radiomir to Luminor is completed. The Second World War having drawn to a close, the Florentine company continues the technical research begun at the start of the war, culminating in the development of the Luminor, characterized by the crown-protecting bridge, with reinforced wire lugs created from the same block of steel as the case, the cushion-shaped case as in the Radiomir 1940 and the flat, wider bezel. Nowadays the models with this case are known as Luminor 1950.

2001 — Aer a meticulous refurbishment, Panerai's historic boutique is reopened. A restyling of the original Piazza San Giovanni premises in Florence, following the acquisition of the family shop by Officine Panerai. This artisan’s workshop is a meeting point for brand collectors and enthusiasts, who can find not only pieces from the current collection, but also special edition watches and special productions that Panerai reserves exclusively for its boutiques. 2005 — Officine Panerai launches its first inhouse movement, the P.2002: a hand-wound calibre with GMT function and an eight-day power reserve, as in the Angelus movements used in the 1940s. The calibre takes its name from the year in which Officine Panerai inaugurated its production plant, a tribute to the watchmaking art of the Florentine brand. www.panerai.com
