6 FRANCE FRANCE François de La Rochefoucauld's assertion that "everything happens in France" is as true now as it was 350 years ago – global culture, fashion, food and football all have a distinct French accent. There can be few cities on the planet that can claim to have been at the centre of history as Paris has. Roman, English, Prussian and German armies have all laid siege, while kings, queens, communes and emperors have reigned and toppled as history played out within its walls.

FOOTBALL The birthplace of the world's three biggest football tournaments, France had to wait until 1984 to win one as Michel Platini's finals-record nine goals helped Les Bleus to UEFA European Championship glory. Zinédine Zidane was the talisman at the turn of the century, inspiring France to victory on home turf at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and then in the EURO two years later. Indeed they have been continental title holders in every age group while French clubs have triumphed in the men's and women's UEFA Champions Leagues. www.uefa.com/uefaeurofinals/hosts/france/city=2470/

SPORT Football is France's most popular sport, with around two million licensed players. Yet the country has a rich tradition in team sport generally – Les Bleus were runners-up at the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup and are reigning men's Olympic handball champions. France also has a prolific production line of basketball players, cyclists and motorsport drivers, while tennis's French Open is one of four Grand Slam tournaments. The biggest annual sporting event is cycling's Tour de France, which aracts in the region of 12 million spectators.

The Monaco Grand Prix is the one race of the year that every driver dreams of winning. Like the Indy 500 or Le Mans, it stands alone, almost distinct from the sport from which it was born. A combination of precision driving, technical excellence and sheer bravery is required to win in Monte Carlo, facets which highlight the differences between the great and the good in Formula One. The Armco barrier-lined circuit leaves no margin for error, demanding more concentration that any other Formula One track. Cars run with maximum downforce and brakes are worked hard. Overtaking is next to impossible so qualifying in Monaco is more critical than at any other Grand Prix. The Portier corner is key to achieving a good lap time around Monaco. It is preceded by the Loews hairpin, the slowest corner in Formula One, and followed by the tunnel, one of the few flat-out sections of the track. Some great names have ended their races in the barriers here, most notably Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

18

To win in Monaco places a driver's name on a list that includes many of history's all-time greats. Both Graham Hill, the man nicknamed 'Mr Monaco', and Schumacher have won it five times, Alain Prost took four victories, whilst Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart each won here three times. But the record of wins in the Principality resides with the Senna, who won in Monte Carlo six times. The race has been a regular fixture of the world championship since 1955, but in that time the circuit has changed remarkably lile. Slight alterations were made for the 2003 event, in particular a new, gentler entry to the Rascasse corner, with even bigger changes in 2004, with a new pit complex and increased spectator capacity.

WHY MONACO IS AN IMPORTANT DESTINATION More like ‘why not go?' Monaco at Grand Prix time epitomises everything that’s great about Formula One racing: speed, glamour, passion, noise and a hint of danger because the cars are never too far away from the barriers. The Principality has a lot of history in its own right, with the Grimaldi Family having reigned supreme since 1297. In a Formula One context, the track is one of the greatest challenges on the calendar; it staged its first (pre championship) Grand Prix in 1929 and has remained largely unchanged ever since.

20

Celebrities flock to the race like bees to a honey pot because it’s the world’s most glamorous sporting event. To name a few that have visited in recent years: actors Brad Pi, George Clooney, Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley, soccer star Roberto Carlos and Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich. “There are too many things to do in Monaco to fit them into 24 hours,” says David Coulthard, who has been a resident in the Principality since 1994. “However, I can suggest a good night out.” (see ‘Where to Go?’ below)

Useful tips The first thing to remember is that the on-track action starts a day early. Unlike every other race on the Formula One calendar, the first day of practice at Monaco is on Thursday. Friday is traditionally a rest day - ideal for some leisurely sightseeing. There is no such thing as general admission in Monaco because it’s not possible to walk from corner-to-corner. You have to book a grandstand seat, with the cost reflecting the vantage point around the lap. Unlike in neighbouring France, tipping (‘pourboire’) is not the norm because most restaurants and taxis add 10 percent onto their bills as a maer of routine.

LEWIS hAMILTON WINS ThRILLING MONACO GP Where to go? You can take a stroll by the harbour, visit the Jardin Exotique (home to more than 7000 varieties of cacti alone) or walk around the Palais du Prince, the Grimaldi’s official residence for 700 years. For more of a party weekend, try Colombus Hotel owner David Coulthard’s suggested itinerary: “Arrive into Nice airport in the evening and go straight to the Columbus. Once you’ve checked in, head for dinner at the SAS cafe and, from there, head to the Amber Lounge and dance your ass off.”

22

Where to stay? If you have the cash, nothing beats the glamour of staying in Monaco itself. The closer you are to the track, the higher the price and most hotels are booked out months in advance, so plan ahead. Coulthard’s Colombus Hotel is just one of the stylish options available. A more cost-effective choice is to stay along the coast in one of the quaint seaside towns such as Beaulieu Sur Mer. Hotel rooms oen cost a fraction of those in Monaco and it is only a short commute by train into the Principality.

Extended stay Sickly members of the English and French aristocracies used to travel to the south of France ‘to take the air and recuperate’. While the Cote d’Azur may no longer be the exclusive destination of the rich, there is still something magical - even medicinal - about the air and scenery. Beaches and mountains are both within easy reach of Monaco. The Alpes Maritimes line the coast and are a great challenge for walkers and cyclists alike. Cannes is a stone’s throw to the west and Nice is linked to Paris by the high-speed TGV train, so you can be in the capital in no time. “If I have a few days to kill,” says Coulthard, “I hire a boat and head for St Tropez. The beaches there are beautiful and there are some fantastic restaurants too.”

Enthusiasts only If you fancy Monaco in January, don’t miss the Monte-Carlo Rally. If, however, you prefer circuit racing, the former French Grand Prix venue of Paul Ricard is only a couple of hours away. Or you can stay on the coast and watch some offshore power boating, which takes place on a regular basis throughout the summer months. www.formula1.com/content/fomwebsite/en/championship/races/2016/Monaco. html

Abu Dhabi is a city on the move. Not content with enjoying one of the world's richest oil reserves, the region has recently thrown itself into a massive programme of development. And one of the jewels in Abu Dhabi's crown is the new 5.55kilometre Yas Marina Circuit, which on November 1, 2009, hosted the country's inaugural Grand Prix. It was also the first F1 twighlight race, with powerful lighting ensuring a seamless transition from day to night.

52

Located on the spectacular Yas Island, the track is set to revolutionise the design of future Formula One circuits. Boasting top speeds of 320 km/h and average speeds of 195 km/h, it features nine right turns and 12 le turns and is one of the few venues on the calendar to run in an anti-clockwise direction.

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, Yas Marina has a waterfront seing scenic enough to rival the likes of Monaco and Valencia. And with the track wrapping itself around the island's glamorous newly-built marina, there's plenty of mooring space for the paddock's plethora of yachts. Its distinctive design also boasts several innovative elements including the iconic five-star, 499-room Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi hotel, which straddles the circuit; the 60-metre solar powered Sun Tower, which offers unrivalled views for invited guests; and a pit lane which sees the cars exit via a tunnel passing under the track.

Another world ďŹ rst is that all of the grandstands, including the massive hairpin seating area, are covered to protect spectators from the desert sun, whilst the state-of-the-art pit building boasts 40 air-conditioned garages. Luxuriant comforts and ďŹ rst-rate views are clearly the watchwords for Abu Dhabi race goers.

The track itself was designed with racing in mind. As well as the waterside marina area, there are high-speed sections (including the longest straight on the F1 calendar), tight corners for overtaking, and even a twisty street circuit-style sector. Overall, its diverse elements come together to create one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, where close and competitive racing is guaranteed.

Why go? It’s hard to find a more spectacular seing for a Grand Prix than Yas Island, on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi. It’s home to numerous 5-star hotels and the Ferrari Theme Park, and the 5.55kilometre (3.45-mile) Yas Marina Circuit is a suitably glamorous addition to the FIA Formula One World Championship. The track has many unique touches. It runs alongside the island’s spectacular marina; it passes under the new 5-star Yas Viceroy hotel and alongside a new 60-metre sun tower. The exit of the pit lane even crosses under the circuit.

54

“It's a very impressive facility and the track layout is fun, so it's a great place," says Williams driver Felipe Massa. "With Ferrari World just around the corner, the race has a strong Ferrari flavour." Away from Yas Island, Abu Dhabi has lots to offer. It’s the largest and wealthiest of the seven United Arab Emirates, with a crude oil supply that isn’t expected to run out until the 22nd century. Unlike some of its neighbours in the Gulf, Abu Dhabi has retained its local traditions and charms, making it an enjoyable and interesting stop-off.

Did you know? Abu Dhabi is the world’s richest city. The average net worth of the 420,000 permanent citizens is US$17 million. Useful tips With the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix being near the end of the season, the weather conditions are not too extreme. Midday temperatures of between 25-30 degrees can be expected, but the grandstands are all covered - a ďŹ rst for a circuit anywhere in the world - so shade is easy to come by.

Where to go? Abu Dhabi has a very cosmopolitan feel and there is something for everyone. There’s an eclectic mix of international cuisine to suit all budgets, starting at the Emirates Palace (for a time the world’s most expensive hotel) down to the cafe culture that prevails throughout the Middle East. For traditional Abu Dhabi cuisine, head to the area surrounding the fish market in Abu Dhabi city. There are plenty of other tourist aractions. If you want local culture, why not head to the camel market in Al Ain or the Abu Dhabi falcon hospital. And, of course, there is the aforementioned Ferrari Theme Park, covering 250,000 square metres and featuring a G-Force Tower, driving schools for children and adults, high-tech theatres and lots of cars on display.

From 2012 there'll be even more of an international flavour in Abu Dhabi, with the opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first Louvre museum outside France. Where to stay? All the best hotel chains are in Abu Dhabi - and many of them on Yas Island - so you can expect to be looked aer wherever you go. Most of the F1 luminaries stay in the 5-star Yas Viceroy hotel, which is just a short walk from the F1 paddock. But for those looking for more modest surroundings, there are cheaper options available in Abu Dhabi city.

Extended stay Once you’ve checked out Abu Dhabi city, why not head out into the Rub Al Khali desert, which is known locally as 'The Empty Quarter'. Only a short distance from the city limits, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sand dunes. The town of Al Ain is another popular tourist destination. It’s regarded as the spiritual heart of Abu Dhabi, having been built on seven oases and inhabited for more than 3,000 years. It’s on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO.

Enthusiasts only There’s plenty to see at Yas Marina Circuit, aside from watching Formula One cars. There’s drag racing and an off-road driving centre, and you can test your own skills at a state-of-the-art kart centre. If you think your technique needs some work, there’s even a driving school for you to aend. www.formula1.com/content/fomwebsite/en/championship/races/2016/Abu_Dha bi.html

LUXURY F1 Yas Marina Circuit is an awe-inspiring experience for drivers and spectators alike, with a waterfront seing to rival the likes of Monaco and Singapore. The circuit is straddled by the Yas Viceroy Hotel and also features a 60-metre solar powered Shams Tower and a pit lane, which sees the cars exit via a tunnel passing under the track. Off-track, the entertainment throughout this event shows Abu Dhabi at its most glamorous. Among other things, live concerts featuring performances by major international artists, in the past have included Price, Jay Z, Muse, Beyoncé, Aerosmith, Linkin Park, and Paul McCartney to name a few, as well VIP parties for F1®’s top stars make this the uncontested social and sporting occasion of the year. Mr. Bernie Ecclestone, President of Formula One, has described the Yas Marina Circuit as “one of the most exciting tracks I have ever seen,” high praise for the venue of the first F1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which was held on November 1, 2009. From the twisting Singaporestyle street sections to the Monaco-style marina, the Yas Marina Circuit serves up an array of driving challenges for the world’s best drivers. Soak up the action of the Grand Prix from the viewer-friendly grandstands or go for the more luxurious option of the Marina Hotel or alternative VIP hospitality suites doed around the track. You could also opt, with a nautical frame of mind, to view the Grand Prix race from your yacht moored in the iconic Yas Marina.

ETIHAD’S A380 DEBUTS THE ONLY THREE-ROOM CABIN IN THE SKY

LUXURY AIR TRAVEL

THE RESIDENC

66

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has unveiled the new product and service offering on its Airbus A380 and Boeing B787 Dreamliner aircra, including The Residence by Etihad™, the world’s most luxurious living space in the air, available only on the airline’s A380 aircra. The Residence will be the breath-taking and completely new forward upper-deck cabin on the A380. Accommodating single or double occupancy, it features a living room, separate double bedroom and ensuite shower room. Customers in The Residence will also have a personal butler. With the launch of these new fleets, the Abu Dhabi-based airline will also redefine and rename its cabin classes. The A380 will feature revolutionary First Apartments, which are fully private suites with a separate reclining lounge seat and full-length bed, as well as a chilled mini-bar, personal vanity unit and wardrobe.

Etihad Airways has allocated the upper deck of the A380 to its premium cabins. On the B787, Etihad Airways has designed an enhanced First Suite, adding many new features including a chilled mini-bar. The Business Studio and Economy Smart Seat will feature on both the A380 and the B787. Etihad Airways is introducing the latest Panasonic eX3 entertainment system across both fleets, providing more than 750 hours of ondemand entertainment, improved gaming and high definition screens across all cabins. The system has video touchscreen handsets, offering an additional screen for customers to maximise their entertainment, so they can play games or view a moving flight route map while watching a movie. Noise cancelling headsets are provided across all cabins, with built-in magnetic audio jacks to ensure the best sound quality. The A380 aircra will have full mobile and Wi-Fi service while the B787 will be equipped with Wi-Fi.

CE BY ETIHAD The new cabins and service offering follow the airline’s pledge to transform air travel and make every customer journey a remarkable one. James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ President and Chief Executive Officer, said: “These new living spaces will raise inflight product and service standards to their highest level yet in commercial aviation and alter air travellers’ expectations of inflight comfort and luxury forever. “Etihad Airways’ A380 and B787 will deliver the most advanced airline cabins in the industry, while meeting all weight, range and cost targets at our desired seat count. This will allow us to offer products unparalleled in quality and style, yet at competitive prices across all three cabins.” Believing that no single design agency could deliver its vision for the new cabins, Etihad Airways established in 2008 the Etihad Design Consortium (EDC) which brought together three leading British design companies, Acumen, Factorydesign and Honour Branding to develop

innovative cabin and seat designs for the new fleets. The EDC collaborated with Promise Communispace, a leading agency, to launch comprehensive consumer research and workshops in London, Abu Dhabi, Sydney, and New York, with the goal of understanding what makes a ‘perfect flight’ and asking consumers to help design the perfect airline. Eighty per cent of the new product offering is a direct result of the feedback and information garnered from these workshops. Etihad Airways’ design vision was to bring the individuality and exclusivity of a luxury boutique hotel experience to the sky in a way that embraced Arabian modernism, an aesthetic that combines the traditions of the Middle East with contemporary design.

First Apartments Nine First Apartments will be installed on the upper deck in a 1-1 configuration to create the only single aisle first class cabin in the industry. Each First Apartment, which has a 64 inch high sliding door, includes a reclining armchair and a fulllength ooman, both upholstered by the prestigious Italian suppliers of Ferrari’s interiors, Poltrona Frau.

The ooman transforms into a separate 80 inch long fully flatbed. The First Apartment, which also includes features such as a chilled mini-bar, a personal vanity unit and a swivelling TV monitor for viewing from either the seat or the bed, has a 74 per cent larger footprint than the airline’s current award-winning first class suites. A fully equipped shower room is available on the A380 for exclusive use by first class customers. First Suites The eight First Suites in a 1-2-1 configuration along a curved aisle, another first in commercial aviation. Each completely private First Suite has a large seat and ooman, both upholstered by Poltrona Frau, which converts into an 80.5 inch long full-flat bed. On the centre seats, the armrests retract and the suites can be joined to create a ‘double’ bed. Other features include a chilled mini-bar and a 24 inch TV monitor. www.etihad.com

A KEY DESIGN OBJECTIVE FOR ETIHAD AIRWAYS WAS TO TRANSFORM THE BOARDING EXPERIENCE MAKING IT MORE AKIN TO STEPPING INTO THE LOBBY OF A BOUTIQUE HOTEL. Business Studios Configured 1-2-1 in a forward and a ‘dovetail’, the Business Studios all have aisle access and the seat converts into a fully flat bed of up to 80.5 inches long. With its privacy, ample storage and surface space, the Business Studio has been designed with the diverse needs of the premium business or leisure traveller firmly in mind. The Lobby The Lobby which is a serviced lounge and bar area located between the first and business cabins. Providing a semi-circular leather sofa, a marquetry table and a large TV screen, The Lobby is designed for relaxing and socialising. Cabin Entrances A key design objective for Etihad Airways was to transform the boarding experience making it more akin to stepping into the lobby of a boutique hotel. In all entry-ways in both aircra and in all cabins, the galley equipment is concealed behind custom Arabic

fretwork screens and blinds, while the trolleys are covered by elegant wood-finish doors, seing a stylish and welcoming environment for all customers. Importantly for the airline’s Muslim customers, Etihad Airways has developed prayer areas which can be curtained off for privacy and are equipped with a real-time electronic Qibla-finder showing the exact direction of Mecca based on the aircra’s geographical position. In the premium class boarding areas, Etihad Airways will collaborate with cultural institutions in the UAE to exhibit artwork and artefacts in display cabinets installed throughout. Items from the Etihad Airways duty free catalogue will also be displayed. With the launch of these new aircra, Etihad Airways will update its dining equipment, amenities and so furnishings across its entire fleet.

PARMIGIANI

AUTOMATIC, CHRONOGRAPH & FLYBACK MOVEMENT It is not surprising that automakers and the designers of luxury timepieces like to collaborate with each other. Both professions deal with precision, high-performance machines, and both are constantly striving for new innovations in both technical achievement and style.

92

When automakers and watch designers work together, the results are usually spectacular and interesting. The watches produced by such collaborations are always masterful in their technical details and appealing in their appearance.

LUXURY WATCHES This Bugai line from Parmigiani Fleurier Watches has a striking look and a unique movement. These are the first watches in the world to have a transverse movement that works like the transmission of a car. Understandably proud of their creation, Bugai and Omega Watches have provided several see-through panels showing off every aspect of the movement.

These watches don't look like others. In the original Bugai design, shown in several of these selections, the body is an oval cylinder, most of which is filled by the see-through panels. The circular dial is at the side of the cylinder. Also shown are several of the Bugai Flyback Chronographs, the design for which is based on the Bugai Atalante 57S Sport from the 1930s. These have wide, porthole-style dials with see-through faces showing the handsome movement. Each of these luxury timepieces has a large chronograph dial in the space between the center and 3, while a small second hand appears beside 9. Notice that some of these Parmigiani Fleurier watches are set with white baguee diamonds. Here are watches that are perfect for the lovers of all kinds of high-performance machinery. This line from Bugai and Parmigiani Fleurier Watches is a technical and stylistic triumph. www.parmigiani.ch

LUXURY JEWELLERY

PIAGET CREATIVITY: A DEMANDING PASSION

Our designers continually revisit the themes that Piaget holds dear. They draw inspiration from a strong historical legacy and modern themes with a wide range of styles reminiscent of Hollywood glamour, magic gardens and the many facets of celebratory occasions. Each Piaget design plays on the fluidity of materials and the radiance of light, thanks to the exceptional talent of our jewellers and gemseers. Each Piaget design gives way to a new emotion: from diamond drops that trickle down the neck, quivering foliage that embellish and frame the face and the firework-like explosion of gems.

RIO 2016 OLYMPICS The Games of the Olympiad—or more commonly known as the Summer Olympic Games—was first done in Athens, Greece way back in 1896. It is an international and multi-sporting event that happens every four years and is managed by the International Olympic Commiee or IOC. Awarding medals for every event has been a tradition dating back to 1904 with the first place geing a Gold Medal, second place receiving a Silver Medal, and third place acquiring the Bronze Medal.

130

The coming 2016 Summer Olympics is known officially as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and is commonly referred to as Rio 2016. The event will officially open on the 5th of August and the closing ceremony will be held on the 21st at the Maracana Stadium. This year’s Olympic Games will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will mark the first time for a Lusophone and South American City to host the prestigious sporting event.

There are 59 qualified countries but more than 205 is expected to participate in the 28 sports events with more than 306 competitions. The events will be held in 35 different venues: Barra da Tijuca will host a majority of the events with some venues scaered throughout Deodoro, Copacabana, and Maracana.

Olympic Countries More than 200 member nations of the International Olympic Commiee (IOC) are expected to compete in the 2016 Rio Games. The official list of participants will be confirmed shortly before the Games begin, once the competition for places concludes.

132

Olympic Athletes More than 10,000 athletes will compete in the first edition of the Olympic Games in South America. The bale to qualify, which began in 2014, is still going on and concludes shortly before the Games, when the official list of athletes will be confirmed.

Olympic Sports Get ready for the intense excitement of 42 Olympic sports. 306 events over the course of 19 days of competition will yield 136 medals for women, 161 for men and nine mixed medals. Olympic Medal Count 2,102 is the number of gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded to the athletes competing in the Olympic Games. Designed by the Organising Commiee’s design team, the Rio 2016 medals will be revealed soon.

How it all began The story behind the medals goes all the way back to the Ancient Olympics, when only the winner of an event would receive a crown of laurel leaves as his prize. Legend has it that the leaves were taken from a sacred grove, near the temple of Zeus, in Olympia. At the first Olympics of the modern era, the Athens 1896 Games, winners were awarded a silver medal and a diploma in addition to the crown.

The St. Louis 1904 Games were the first in which gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to athletes in the top three positions. The St. Louis 1904 Olympics also saw the medals being fied with a colourful ribbon to be pinned on the athletes’ chests. It was only in the Rome 1960 Games that they were changed to be hung around the winners’ necks. www.rio2016.com

RIO CARNIV | 134 |

VAL

RIO CARNIVAL 24 FEBRUARY 2017 Although Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) is celebrated in towns and villages throughout Brazil and other Catholic countries, Rio de Janeiro has long been regarded as the Carnival capital of the world. The Rio Carnaval is not only the biggest Carnival, it is also a benchmark against which every other carnival is compared and one of the most interesting artistic events on the globe. Almost everyone has heard of Rio Carnaval. Foreign visitors to it alone number around 500,000 every year. Rio Carnival is a wild 5-day celebration, 40 days before Easter. It officially starts on Friday and finishes on Fat Tuesday with the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday aer which one is supposed to abstain from all bodily pleasures. Carnival with all its excesses, celebrated as a profane event, could be interpreted an act of farewell to the pleasures of the flesh. It is usually in February, the hoest month in the Southern Hemisphere, when summer in Rio is at its peak. There are carnival celebrations on virtually every corner of Brazil, the best-known ones taking place in Recife together with the neighboring Olinda (in the Northeast of Brazil) and Salvador. But the biggest and most famous carnival is undoubtedly Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. One of the greatest elements of Rio Carnival is that it not only provides entertainment for many people around the world but it also gives a chance to learn about the true culture of Brazil. Carnival is very important to the Brazilians, it sums up their way of thinking and way of life. It is a euphoric event where people dance, sing, party and have an overdose of fun. There are many parties that take place before, during and aer Carnival all night and all day. It allows someone's true heart to come out and have as much fun as possible. Rio Carnival is the result of months of preparation. People eagerly anticipate the start of each year's Rio Carnival. It begins with the crowning of the Fat King (King Momo), who is presented with a giant silver and gold key by the city's mayor. Then it is Carnival all over the place, in the streets and squares, bars, clubs and all other venues, taking over the whole city of Rio and culminating in the Rio Carnival Parade also known as the Samba Parade.

TRINIDAD TOBAGO CARNIVAL

D&

L

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO CARNIVAL 27 FEBRUARY 2017 An explosion of colour, music, revelry, and creativity, Trinidad's Carnival has spawned similar celebrations around the world; but nothing on earth can rival the abandon, euphoria and stunning spectacle of our festival. With its massive masquerade bands, spectacular costumes, pulsating music and unparalleled stamina for partying, Trinidad's Carnival is oen described as the greatest show on earth. It is a time for release and everyone is invited to join the party. Origins of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Carnival in Trinidad is a true hybrid celebration, originating when West African slaves began mimicking (and mocking) the lavish ballroom festivities of their French masters with their ornate costumes and dances. The West Africans adopted the elaborate masks and costumes while creating their own music using household items like sticks and pans. Eventually, the complex rhythms and melodies of this improvised orchestra evolved into the calypso music that forms the backbone of Trinidad Carnival to this day. In the middle of the 19th century, slavery was outlawed but the tradition carried on, mixing calypso music with French influences to create another hybrid, the Caribbean-based genre of music known as soca. Then things really changed with the invention of the steel pan aer World War II. The music of the region has never been the same since. A Feast for the Senses The modern incarnation of the Trinidad Carnival is a bawdy, rum-flavored feast for the senses: dancing, eating, drinking, sweating—generally speaking, the biggest party (also known locally as a fête) that you can imagine. Carnival is definitely not a spectator sport. You couldstay on the sidelines if you tried, but what’s the point? Participate in the masor masquerade by purchasing an outfit or designing one of your own. Remember, this is the Caribbean: the emphasis is on sexy. Make sure you look the part. Feather boas, sequins, brightly colored undergarments and other such revealing clothing are the standard here. The less inhibited, the beer! www.ncc.org

TOUR DE FRANCE 2016 2ND - 24th JULY

Great moments in the history of the Tour The line between insanity and genius is said to be a fine one, and in early 20thcentury France, anyone envisaging a near-2,500-km-long cycle race across the country would have been widely viewed as unhinged. But that didn’t stop Géo Lefèvre, a journalist with L’Auto magazine at the time, from proceeding with his inspired plan. His editor, Henri Desgrange, was bold enough to believe in the idea and to throw his backing behind the Tour de France. And so it was that, on 1 July 1903, sixty pioneers set out on their bicycles from Montgeron. Aer six mammoth stages (Nantes Paris, 471 km!), only 21 “routiers”, led by Maurice Garin, arrived at the end of this first epic.

146

Having provoked a mixture of astonishment and admiration, le Tour soon won over the sporting public and the roadside crowds swelled. The French people took to their hearts this unusual event which placed their towns, their countryside and, since 1910, even their mountains, in the spotlight. Le Tour has always moved with the times. Like France as a whole, it benefited from the introduction of paid holidays from 1936; it has lived through wars, and then savoured the “trente glorieuses” period of economic prosperity while enjoying the heydays of Coppi, Bobet, Anquetil, Poulidor and it has opened itself up to foreign countries with the onset of globalisation.

The 2016 Tour Running from Saturday July 2nd to Sunday July 24th 2016, the 103th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,519 kilometres. These stages have the following profiles: • 9 flat stages • 1 hilly stage • 9 mountain stages including 4 summit finishes (Andorre Arcalis, Mont Ventoux, FinhautEmosson et Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc) • 2 individual time trial stages • 2 rest days • 16 unseen sites and stage cities

LUXURY SUITES

THE ROYAL SUITE AT THE PLAZA NEW YORK It was once said, “Nothing unimportant ever happens at The Plaza.” One of America’s most celebrated hotels, The Plaza opened its doors on October 1, 1907, amid a flurry of impressive reports describing it as the greatest hotel in the world. Located at Fih Avenue and Central Park South, this luxury hotel was constructed in the most fashionable residential section of New York City. The Plaza was the dream of financier Bernhard Beinecke, hotelier Fred Sterry, and Harry S. Black, President of the Fuller Construction Company. They purchased a 15-year-old hotel of the same name on the site. The three men set out to replace it with what is surely one of the most elegant hotels in the world.

NEW YORK EEK FASHION W | 172 |

Construction of the 19-story building (a skyscraper back then) took two years at a cost of $12 million – an unprecedented sum in those days. Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, who also designed the Dakota apartments, the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. and The Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, set about his task to provide all the pomp, glory, and opulence of a French chateau. No cost was spared. The largest single order in history for goldencrusted china was placed with L. Straus & Sons, and no less than 1,650 crystal chandeliers were purchased.

SIGNATURE SpA THERApIES Mandarin Oriental’s signature spa therapies have been devised to address guests’ increasing desire for simple, effective and authentic spa experiences. Developed in consultation with specialists in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and master aromatherapists, each signature therapy consists of a relaxing, hands-on body massage ritual that combines the powerful effects of oriental meridian massage with the therapeutic benefits of custom-blended essential oils, created uniquely for Mandarin Oriental. Each treatment begins with a private therapist consultation in order to determine each individual’s personal and current state of wellbeing. The treatment and oils are then tailored to each guest in order to leave the body, mind and spirit in perfect harmony. Guests are also provided with nutritional and exercise guidance, in order to extend the beneficial effects of the programme at home.

ORIENTAL HARMONy Four hands work in perfect unison in a remarkable experience that inspires a harmony of the senses. The treatment begins with a soothing foot bath in purifying waters, leaving the feet so and supple and the mind relaxed. Next two therapists work together in time and movement. First, providing a warm scrub that smoothes and replenishes the skin and later a harmonious massage that balances the body. The treatment concludes with a simultaneous head and foot massage leaving the mind uplied, the body energized and the skin exotically fragrant. www.mandarinoriental.com/london

EXCELSIOR HOTEL GALLIA

KATARA S | 196 |

Owned by Katara Hospitality, this Milanese landmark recently emerged from a meticulous, all-encompassing renovation of the historic building, whilst adding a new contemporary wing. Formerly known as “Palace Gallia”, the hotel is strongly rooted in Milanese history, located in the heart of the new Porta Nuova district. Excelsior Hotel Gallia is the latest gem to be unveiled by The Luxury Collection as part of a multi-million Euro investment to restore the brand’s most iconic European hotels.

Excelsior Hotel Gallia comprises two buildings – the fully restored historic palace and a new modern wing with a façade that resembles a delicate steel and glass curtain. The striking juxtaposition is inspired by the hotel’s luminous past and the emerging skyline of the Porta Nuova area.

SUITE Guests entering the hotel are welcomed by the dazzling sight of a custom-made 30-metre Murano glass chandelier created by De Majo, depicting a waterfall of 180 light cylinders which illuminates the eight-story monumental stairwell. The historical lobby pays tribute to notable Milanese architecture of the 1930s, such as La Scala Theatre, Viorio Emanuele Gallery and Villa Necchi Campiglio. The public spaces have been outfied by B&B Italia using aluminium, glass and marble.

MILAN K E E W N O I H S FA Excelsior Hotel Gallia features 235 luxurious guest rooms, including 53 suites. The 1,000sqm Katara Suite – one of the largest Presidential Suites in Italy – is situated on the seventh floor, offering two terraces, four bedrooms and a private spa. The two-bedroom Gallia Suite mimics a sophisticated private residence with its beautiful loggia surrounded by historical columns and statues. The other 51 suites revolve around five distinct themes: Design Suites, dedicated to a renowned Milanese designer or architect, namely Vico Magistrei, Achille Castiglioni, Giò Ponti, Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Franco Albini; Art Suites, which overlook the square and feature a large sliding panel with photos of the hotel’s historic façade; and Atelier Suites, evoking the ambiance of creative workshops. The hotel’s Signature Suites have been conceived as art galleries with theatrical use of lighting, colour, and artwork, while the Executive Suites are inspired by the elegant atmosphere of Milanese los. All the rooms are outfied by Cassina Contract with the exception of the Katara Suite which has been furnished by B&B Italia. Set to open in September on the seventh floor, the hotel’s roof-top mixologist bar and signature restaurant Terrazza Gallia will be managed with the advice of the renowned Cerea family. With the three Michelin-star duo Enrico and Roberto Cerea providing culinary guidance on Terrazza Gallia, diners can savour the best of traditional Italian and Lombard cuisine with a contemporary twist. Guests seated on the covered and heated outdoor terrace will enjoy a panoramic view of Milan, including the landmark Central Station and the

adjacent Pirelli skyscraper by Giò Ponti. The Cerea family will also lend their gastronomic expertise to the hotel’s banqueting and events services. The Gallia Restaurant on the ground floor offers the ideal location for a breakfast meeting, smart business lunch, or private dinner, whilst the Wine Cellar is the ideal seing for an intimate private lunch or dinner. “Excelsior Hotel Gallia is a magnificent property that has undergone a meticulous renovation and strategic expansion that marries contemporary design with the hotel’s Belle Époque architectural style, ensuring that this remains as one of Milan’s historic landmarks,” said Sheikh Nawaf Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al-Thani, Chairman, Katara Hospitality. www.excelsiorhotelgallia.com

The owners of the Royal Mansour Marrakech wanted to celebrate architecture, ancestral knowledge and culinary arts as well as an innate sense of beauty which is part of the country’s heritage.

222

Like the great gates of the imperial cities of Morocco, the monumental entrance is testimony of the local crasmanship as well as the materials and techniques used; such as the traditional cedar wood, chiseled metal and sculpted plaster work. Just like the famous “Bab el Khemis” (Thursday Gate), the Royal Mansour Marrakech’s great gate promises; “happiness, wealth and prosperity”.

MANSOUR IN THE HEART OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST CAPTIVATING CITIES, THE ROYAL MANSOUR MARRAKECH WELCOMES YOU WITH WONDER, LUXURY AND UNPARALLELED SERVICES. As for the interior, it is a pure celebration of the diversity and virtuosity of master crasmen from the Kingdom, with lace embedded plaster, carved ceilings, floors and walls, where Tadelakt and Zelliges take turns in the spotlight.

The ground-breaking, distinctive and ingenious masterpiece hotel design is magnified by an intricate series of underground tunnels to each of the property’s 53 riads, accessed only by staff and thus guaranteeing the utmost privacy and discretion. The Royal Mansour Marrakech offers its guests unparalleled experiences of wonders and emotions, leaving an imprint in their memories.

The Kentucky Derby, presented by YUM! Brands, is a top rank, Grade I stakes race for 3 year old Thoroughbred horses. The race distance is one and one-quarter miles long, and it is run on the dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

20 horses compete in the Kentucky Derby, which is a larger field size than most horse races; where on average 8 horses race against one another. The 20 horses racing in the Kentucky Derby must first travel along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, which is a series of 35 races taking place at tracks across the country and the world. Points are awarded to the top 4 horses that finish in each of those 35 races, and the 20 horses with the most points earn a spot in the starting gate in the Kentucky Derby race. The Kentucky Derby winning purse is $2 million.

MAY 5 - MAY 6 2017

KY DERBY The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May every year, and typically draws a crowd of 155,000 people. It is the longest continually held sporting event in America, and it is one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. LUXURY JETS

HONDA MOVE THE ENGINE. SHIFT EXPECTATIONS. A breakthrough in aeronautics, the Over-TheWing Engine Mount was engineered and proven by Honda aer more than 20 years of extensive research and development. This innovative technology not only breaks the conventional mold set by the aerospace industry, but also provides category-leading advancements such as a more spacious cabin, noise reduction, and increased fuel efficiency. INNOVATIONS: NATURAL LAMINAR FLOW WING AND NOSE Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) maximizes performance. Advancements in aerodynamics and NLF technology were applied to the design of the main wing airfoil and fuselage nose shape of the HondaJet to reduce aerodynamic drag. This cuing-edge engineering innovation contributes to high cruising speed and increased fuel efficiency. INNOVATIONS: COMpOSITE FUSELAGE Lightweight structure, heavyweight performance. Unlike many jets that use aluminum, the HondaJet employs a lighter yet strong composite fuselage. The fuselage is created from a cuing-edge combination of co-cured integral structure and honeycomb sandwich structures. This results in increased cabin space, beer performance, and greater fuel efficiency.

254

INNOVATIONS: GARMIN® G3000 Advanced cockpit. The HondaJet cockpit is built for optimum safety based on thoughtful ergonomic design and stateof-the-art situational awareness. First, we give the pilot more space and greater visibility; next, fewer intrusions and more intuition. Our Garmin® G3000 next-generation all-glass avionics system brings pilot and aircra closer together with touch-screen technology. The dual touch-screen controllers and three 14-inch landscape highresolution displays offer enhanced navigation, flight planning, and control. The cockpit is unquestionably built around the pilot to enable either single-pilot or dual-pilot operation of the HondaJet.

COMFORT At home, miles above it. It’s called cabin space, and HondaJet provides more of it than any other jet in its class. But to you and your fellow passengers, it’s much more than a cabin. It’s a workspace, thinking space, quiet space, and a relaxing space. These are the true inspirations behind the HondaJet’s interior and why Honda designers meticulously considered every detail — from the completely adjustable executive seating to the fully private lavatory and a host of other modern amenities.

AJET pERFORMANCE The next generation of flight. The Honda Aircra Company has recreated the business jet from the ground up with a truly clean sheet design. By mounting engines over the wing, designing Natural Laminar Flow for the wing and fuselage, and applying other innovations, the HondaJet outperforms all other aircra in its class. The culmination of cuing-edge innovation makes the HondaJet the world’s most advanced light business jet. It climbs and cruises faster, soars higher, offers more room and less noise, and uses less fuel. “Unlike anything the sky has ever seen. We’re not just building a new jet. We’re building a new standard in aviation with Honda’s heritage.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL A global workforce. An investment in a private jet is a substantial one. The Honda Aircra Company, headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, is a fully operational, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and home of a global R&D center geared up to build the fastest, most fuel-efficient jets in their class. Honda Aircra associates have assembled from more than 40 countries around the world to produce one of the most distinctive and advanced aircra to ever take to the sky. HONDA HERITAGE The progression of human mobility. For more than 60 years, Honda has helped the human race move with more speed, economy, grace, and joy. The HondaJet is the epitome of continually improving human mobility. The commitment to flight by Honda — a globally recognized and respected company — is as steadfast as its dedication to its landbound endeavors. www.hondajet.com

CHAMpIONSHIp COURSE OVERVIEW Although The Address Montgomerie Dubai has evolved into one of the Middle East's most luxurious and desirable golfing destinations in recent times, the key to its success has always remained contingent upon the quality of the golf course that would become the focal point for one of Dubai's most exclusive residential communities, Emirates Hills. The course provides the player with undulating "links land" style fairways with generous landing areas which challenge and intrigue all levels of player. Although large in size, the greens can be very misleading, especially as they are consistently rolling above 9.5feet. Plenty of shape throughout the greens can result in some very trying pus. One of the signature holes is the par 5 fourth, dubbed the Snake hole for its saddleback fairway which doglegs towards the green, with two bunkers behind forming the eyes of the snake. Further on, the par 5 ninth, with water down the le, is a tough finish to the opening half. The par 3 thirteenth, a hole designed in the shape of the UAE, boasts a 360 degree teeing area around an island fairway and green, allowing for a completely different golf hole to be played every time. However, it is the par 5 eighteenth that offers a more classic test.

260

“At 656 yards it is a monster and, with water protecting the front of the green, it defies even the best player to hit the green in two.” The Address Montgomerie Dubai offers two very different seasons of golf. During winter, the golf course is over-seeded whilst the summer season has the course back to a full stand of Bermuda grass. The turf growth is vigorous during the summer resulting in a very challenging rough. THE ACADEMy By TROON GOLF The Academy by Troon Golf, one of the finest teaching facilities in the world right here at The Address Montgomerie Dubai. The aim is to create a learning environment, which develops and improves our students golfing ability and knowledge of their swing through coaching rather than teaching. You will enjoy the difference in the creative and energetic approach of world-renowned professional coaching staff, commied to providing an extraordinary learning experience.

Location This magnificent hotel and golf course is the perfect retreat from the bustle of modern Dubai. Beautifully tranquil, yet refreshingly well connected – easy to reach from Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai International Airport. Apart from the world-class golfing facilities, The Address Montgomerie Dubai is moments from the trendseing restaurants and luxury yachts of the Dubai Marina and the spectacular Dubai Marina Mall with its 160 ultra chic stores.

Guest Rooms Each of our 21 boutique guest rooms has been artfully designed with rich fabrics and contemporary touches. You will find handcraed leather furniture, opulent bathrooms and 24 hour room service. Each room comes equipped with gourmet coffee and tea station, fully stocked mini bar, complimentary high-speed internet access, safety deposit box and high definition television complete with access to our in-house movies and in-room digital tablet

Golf Dubai has a way of doing things. With year-round sunshine, world-class courses, unbeatable club facilities and frequent visits by the world’s top professionals – golf is no exception. Since creating the Middle East’s first grass course in 1989, Dubai has seen swathes of desert transformed into verdant fairways and perfectly manicured greens. It is an obsession for the game that has brought it to the forefront of the international stage.

Restaurants & Lounges Dining at The Address Montgomerie Dubai is all about tantalising, culinary delights and a complete sensory experience. You will sample enticing, award-winning cuisine from across the globe, in a seing that is both exquisitely modern and stunningly chic.

HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA 2016—29th JUNE - 3rd JULY 2017—28th JUNE - 2nd JULY Henley Royal Regaa is undoubtedly the best known regaa in the world and is both one of the highlights of the summer sporting calendar and the social season. It aracts thousands of visitors over a 5-day period and spectators will be thrilled by over 200 races of an international standard, including Olympians and crews new to the event. Aside from the rowing, visitors can take in the ambience enjoying the facilities within the enclosures. Crews Founded in 1839, Henley Royal Regaa is famous both as a great sporting occasion and as a social event; people come from all over the world to aend, either as competitors or as spectators. Winning an event at Henley has always been considered one of the greatest achievements of a rower's career, even amongst those who have become world champions; and a rowing life is not complete if it does not include competing at Henley. Unlike all other major international regaas, racing at Henley is on a knock-out basis, with crews rowing two abreast over a course which is one mile 550 yards (2,112 metres) long. Naturally the tactics in such races are different from racing six abreast; but oarsmen who row almost all their serious races six abreast over 2,000 metre courses have found that the variety of racing at Henley adds greatly to the interest and enjoyment of their regaa season. www.hrr.co.uk

FESTIVAL DE

CANNES The 69th annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 11 to 22 May 2016. Australian director George Miller was the President of the Jury for the main competition. French actor Laurent Lafie was the host for the opening and closing ceremonies. On 15 March it was announced that Japanese director Naomi Kawase would serve as the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury president. American director Woody Allen's film Café Society opened the festival.

The Palme d'Or was awarded to the British film I, Daniel Blake directed by Ken Loach, which also served as closing film of the festival. At a press conference, Loach said that he was "quietly stunned" to win.

300

Ever since its creation, the Festival de Cannes has

remained faithful to its founding purpose: to draw aention to and raise the profile of films with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema, boosting the film industry worldwide and celebrating cinema at an international level. The Official Selection serves to highlight the diversity of cinematic creation through its different sections, the two most important of which are the Competition and Un Certain Regard.

Films that are representative of “auteur cinema with a wide audience appeal” are presented in Competition, and Un Certain Regard focuses on works that have an original aim and aesthetic.

PALM SPRINGS IN

SHORTFEST alm Springs International Film Festival is a film festival held in Palm Springs, California. Originally promoted by Mayor Sonny Bono and then sponsored by Nortel Networks Corporation, it started in 1989 and is held annually in January. It is run by the Palm Springs International Film Society, which also runs the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films (ShortFest), a festival of short films and film market in June. Though the festival does feature American independent films, the focus from its inception was to shine a spotlight on international cinema. Michael Barker, co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, described the festival as a good place to show foreign-language movies and heralded this festival's ability to spread good word-of-mouth for movies. The event is noted for screening most foreign Oscar nominees. In 2013, the festival screened 42 of the 71 movies that were submied by countries around the world to the Oscars for that year's foreign language film prize.[2] In the days before the festival's opening, several of the foreign filmmakers convene at Sunnylands, the Annenberg estate in Rancho Mirage, to trade strategies on funding, producing and promoting their movies.[3] The festival regularly aracts around 135,000 people, with some 70% coming from outside of the Coachella Valley, including Canada and Europe.[2] It is noted for its Award Ceremonies where such actors as Brad Pi, Clint Eastwood, Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, Anne Hathaway and Leonardo DiCaprio have appeared. In January 2011, the festival's honorees included Ben Affleck and Danny Boyle.[4] The current director of the festival is Darryl Macdonald, long time festival director for the Seale Film Festival.

second only to Cannes in terms of high-profile pics, stars and market activity." In 2007, Time noted that TIFF had "grown from its place as the most influential fall film festival to the most influential film festival, period." This is partially the result of TIFF's ability and reputation for generating "Oscar buzz". Notable films to have had their world or North American premiere at Toronto include Chariots of Fire, The Big Chill, Husbands and Wives, Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, Downfall, Sideways, Crash, The King's Speech, Moneyball, Silver Linings Playbook, Argo, and Dallas Buyers Club. www.tiff.net

SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST 10-19 MARCH, 2017

VIP FILM FESTIVALS

The South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conferences & Festivals offer the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW® is the premier destination for discovery. Year aer year, the event is a launching pad for new creative content. New media presentations, music showcases and film screenings provide buzzgenerating exposure for creators and compelling entertainment for audiences. Conference panel discussions present a forum for learning, business activity thrives at the Trade Shows and global networking opportunities abound. Intellectual and creative intermingling among industry leaders continues to spark new ideas and carve the path for the future of each everevolving field, long aer the events’ conclusion. HISTORY In 1986, a small group of people in Austin, Texas began a series of long discussions about the future of entertainment and media. A fundamental opinion shared by the group was that the local creative and music communities were as talented as anywhere else on the planet, but were severely limited by a lack of exposure outside of Austin.

Music was the uniting factor, but the group had a catholic taste for art and ideas. As the key ideas were formed, recognition grew that Austin was not the only city where this was an issue. For a local event to bring the world to Austin, it needed to have value everywhere. A name was sought that was not restrictive in its concept. Finally, in October of 1986, the announcement of the first South By Southwest was made. Almost everyone wanted to be involved. The first event, held in March of 1987, saw an expected 150 registrants swell to 700 on the opening day. As hoped for, Austin’s charm won over the visitors, and SXSW took on a life of its own. The event has changed in many surprising and meaningful ways since 1987, but at its core, SXSW remains a tool for creative people to develop their careers by bringing together people from around the globe to meet, learn and share ideas. (And maybe have a few once-in-a-lifetime experiences.) www.sxsw.com

EXPO 202 20 OCTOBER 2020

Dubai’s Expo will be a festival of human ingenuity. The engines of growth are no longer steampowered. | 316 |

• We aim to create and deliver an inclusive and global Expo with over 200 participants that include nations, multilateral organisations, corporates and educational institutions. • Expo 2020 also has an ambitious volunteer programme, which aims to include more than 30,000 volunteers from a wide range of ages, nationalities, cultures and backgrounds. • The Expo site covers a total of 4.38 square kilometres, including a 200 hectare gated area. It is located within the Dubai South District, adjacent to Al Maktoum International Airport.

20 DUBAI

THE JOURNEY TO 2020 HAS STARTED We’re inviting people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, including national governments, businesses, academia, civil society and citizens of the world, particularly the youth to be a part of this shared vision and the lasting legacy it will help us to create.

AN EXPO FOR EVERYONE FOR ALL TIME The 2020 World Expo will not be confined to a physical site, or to a six month period of time. It begins now, wherever people are coming together to think about what could be. Expo will provide a platform to foster creativity, innovation and partnership globally. We aim to work with others to accelerate the development of cuing-edge solutions, and scale them up so that they have a reach and value that stretches far beyond the event itself.

AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE Between October 2020 and April 2021, Dubai will host the next World Expo. Bringing together more than 180 nations and an international audience of 25 million visitors, it will be one of the greatest shows on Earth—an unforgeable, once in a lifetime experience. We are preparing for an event that will enthral and amaze the many millions who visit, providing a sense of wonder at the ability of people, working together, to envisage and achieve a beer tomorrow.

318

OUR WORLD IS AN AMAZING PLACE, FULL OF HUMAN-MADE WONDERS. Expo 2020 Dubai is guided by the belief that innovation and progress are the result of people and ideas combining in new ways, which explains our theme: ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. For six months, Dubai’s Expo will play host to hundreds of countries, companies and people who bring insight into what is possible in the spheres of opportunity, mobility and sustainability. Millions of people from around the world will be able to share an experience that has one aim: to contribute to building a beer future.

THE UAE: HOST NATION FOR EXPO 2020 Expo 2020 will be the first World Expo to take place in the MEASA (Middle East, Africa and South Asia) region.

Because of this, the nation is convinced of the ability of Expo 2020 to spark collaboration and partnership amongst the international community to seek collective solutions for a beer future.

The UAE demonstrates the power of connections. The nation is home to two major hub airports, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and also two leading airlines. It also has nine major sea ports, including Jebel Ali, the ninth largest container port in the world.

The UAE has an established track record of successful participation in World Expos. The national pavilion from the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai is now a permanent fixture on the skyline of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. We are excited to be hosting the 2020 World Expo, which will welcome 25 million visitors from around the world.

The UAE is also a nation built on the power of connections, between seven emirates, and people of 200 different nationalities who meet, work together and form friendships every day.

DUBAI: HOST CITY FOR EXPO 2020 Dubai is one of the world’s key points of connection. The city is a magnet for international visitors, aracting 14.2 million travellers in 2015. They come to see Dubai’s unique sights, from the iconic Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – to the magical dunes of the Arabian desert, and the restful beaches of the Palm Jumeirah – all of which offer the warm hospitality of the next World Expo host city.

320

CONNECTING MINDS CREATING THE FUTURE Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. It recognises that generating sustainable solutions to global problems demands collaboration across cultures, nations and regions.

It is a reflection of the modern world: connected as never before, and changing with great speed. Today, the world’s biggest accommodation provider owns no hotels. The largest soware providers do not write the apps they sell. The number one retailer stocks no products and the most popular media organisation in the world creates no content. These companies have each recognised the value of sharing and collaboration, made possible by new technology. They empower people to say and do things differently; to connect with others, and to create something new. This what Expo 2020, its participants and visitors will explore. How, by connecting, collaborating and forming new partnerships, can we develop ideas and innovate in order to create a beer future?

OPPORTUNITY, MOBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY The nations and organisations that take part in Expo, and the millions who visit, will explore the power of connections across the spheres of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability - our three subthemes. Expo will focus on three aspects of Opportunity: developing human capital to stimulate progress; the necessity of ďŹ nancial capital as a resource to support growth; and partnerships as a primary driver of innovation and employment.

We will explore a number of facets of Mobility: empowering individuals through physical mobility; facilitating access and distribution of goods and resources; and enhancing virtual connectivity through information technology. And our exhibits will examine the role of natural and built habitats in ensuring human well-being and community resilience; and the need to use resources without compromising the ability of the planet to sustain future generations, as part of the Sustainability sub theme. www.expo2020dubai.ae
