What is ITIL? | ITIL V4 Certification - World Of Agile The term ITIL means "Information Technology Infrastructure Library". A Brief History of ITIL: ITIL started in the UK in the 1980. The Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) developed a skeleton framework of ITIL to overcome the inefficient IT services for the UK government. In 1989 the first book on ITIL was officially published describing ITIL as a library of information that outlined the best ways to manage an IT department. ● Year 2000 : Version 2 of ITIL (ITIL V2) was released ● Year 2007 : ITIL 2007 ● Year 2011 : Version 2 of ITIL (ITIL V3) was released. It had five main volumes. o Service Strategy o Service Design o Service Transition o Service Operation o Continual Service Improvement. ● Year 2013: AXELOS was formed. A joint venture between the UK Government and Capita, a consulting firm, to develop and manage Global Best Practice Portfolio.
● Year 2019: ITIL 4 was released, to align with Agile and modern service delivery approaches. ITIL framework, now is formally owned by Axelos and it's latest version, ITIL V4 Certification was released in February 2019 with a new focus on: value co-creation with the business. ITIL V4 Foundation introduced three key components: ● The service value system ● The four dimensions of service ● The seven guiding principles With ITIL V4 now the focus of ITSM has changed. Traditionally the ITSM was focused on delivering technology solutions and managing them efficiently. But now with ITIL4 the focus is on delivering Business Value or co-creating Business Value.
