WORLD VIEW

Undiscovered Gems Spending by consumers on content is surging—even as they tentatively emerge from lockdown-induced extra time at home. In the second quarter of this year, U.S. consumers alone shelled out $6.3 billion on streaming services, a 17 percent gain, according to DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group. Meanwhile, streaming time across the globe was up 13 percent in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2020, per data from Conviva. “When streaming skyrocketed last year, many surmised that the global upswing was due to the Covid-19 pandemic temporarily altering viewing and social media behaviors,” Conviva said in its Q2 State of Streaming report. “While viewing habits certainly changed, those temporary spikes have turned out to be not so temporary. The pandemic has spurred a tipping point in streaming that shows no signs of reversal.” Programming execs at streaming services are hard at work competing for the best IP to keep these voracious audiences happy—and minimize churn rates. The consensus among the buyers I’ve spoken with recently is that finding those undiscovered gems in a year without physical markets has been tough. Not impossible, of course, especially for those with wellestablished relationships with distributors. But it’s the flipping through magazines and catalogs, seeing a poster while strolling across a show floor, that everyone seems to truly miss. And with physical versions of Series Mania and MIPCOM just around the corner, buyers seem relieved that that process of discovery is, fingers crossed, about to get a little bit easier again. 10 WORLD SCREEN 8/21

Twist of Fate
Kanal D International Recipe of Love / Twist of Fate / Hekimoğlu Kanal D International’s slate includes two new rom-coms, as “romantic comedies became the breakpoint to the stress we are all experiencing in our daily lives,” says Ekin Koyuncu, executive director. The first, Recipe of Love, explores whether love has a standard formula. The second, Twist of Fate, follows a young girl attempting to hold onto her unhappy marriage while also falling for her boss, who keeps his doors closed to love. Also on the slate is the medical drama Hekimoğlu, a remake of the U.S. series House.
“While strong dramas are still in demand, people are shifting toward more optimistic, feel-good stories.”

ZDF Enterprises’ Top Dog
Nordic TV Festival Across the Nordic markets, pubcasters, commercial networks and streamers are setting new trends in drama and entertainment, and that innovation takes center stage in World Screen’s inaugural Nordic TV Festival.
n 2007, DR premiered Søren Sveistrup’s atmospheric crime drama Forbrydelsen (The Killing), hooking audiences as it tracked a murder investigation led by Sofie Gråbøl’s Detective Inspector Sarah Lund. ZDF Enterprises, a co-production partner on the show, soon notched up a raft of deals to bring the cult hit to several international markets—including the U.K.—subsequently setting off a Scandi crime drama trend that would sweep the globe in both tape sales and remakes.

ZDF Enterprises’ Agatha Christie’s Sven Hjerson
As that formidable Danish hit sees renewed life with its U.S. rollout on streamer Topic, it’s clear the Nordic content landscape is booming. ZDF Enterprises remains a robust supporter of Nordic scripted, showcasing five titles in the festival. Among the latest is Agatha Christie’s Sven Hjerson, which landed the MIPDrama Buyers’ Coup de Cœur this year. Another new crime drama is Huss, a Viaplay commission inspired by Helene Tursten’s best-selling novels focused on a recent graduate of Sweden’s police academy who is drawn into “a tangled web of corruption and betrayal,” according to Sebastian Krekeler, director

Scandi drama makes up a crucial part of Eccho Rights’ lineup, and its selections in the Nordic TV Festival include Honour, which has two acclaimed seasons available. “Honour is a thrilling crime drama series with an important and relatable message at its core about female empowerment,” says Nicola Söderlund, managing partner. KOREAN wave

S
outh Korean content exports rose by 6.3 percent last year, generating revenues of $10.8 billion. And while the bulk of that came from the country’s prolific gaming industry, international interest in Korean dramas and entertainment formats continues to surge. As the umbrella government agency tasked with promoting South Korean IP, Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) is assisting the country’s content producers in financial support, industry knowledge and global expansion, according to Do Hyoung Lee, general director of the broadcasting division at KOCCA. Korean formats deliver both originality and universality, Lee explains. “They try something new, not seen in existing formats, and are attractive enough to fascinate people around the world.” Short-form scripted is a burgeoning trend, Lee notes. “Short dramas appeal to viewers with creative subjects and stories. Some of them deal with social issues, including
“OTT platforms...allow access to highquality K-content, fascinating people all over the world.” —Do Hyoung Lee gender.” Lee also highlights the emerging interest in webtoons, following the success last year of shows such as Love Alarm 2 and Taxi Driver. On the heels of format hits like The Masked Singer, I Can See Your Voice and The Good Doctor, global interest in K-pop stars BTS and Blackpink and award-winning films such as Parasite and Minari, the Korean wave is set to continue, Lee says. “During the lockdown period caused by Covid-19, people stayed at home and bingewatched shows on global OTT platforms, which made those not that interested in K-content fall into it. uarter after quarter since the pandemic hit, streaming has emerged as a significant bright spot for Lionsgate. The independent studio recently reported that subscribers to its premium pay and streaming brands grew to 28.9 million year-on-year in the first quarter. OTT subs were up 58 percent to 16.7 million, with StarzPlay International subscribers up 106 percent year-over-year to 7 million. As president of international networks at Starz, Superna Kalle is leading the continued expansion of the premium content streaming service, which is in 50-plus markets across Europe, Latin America and Asia. Kalle talks to World Screen about StarzPlay’s unique positioning amid an endless array of OTT platforms. By Mansha Daswani WS: What niche has StarzPlay carved out in the SVOD market? KALLE: StarzPlay curates best-in-class series and features from the world with global, premium drama for our subscribers— content that is edgy, sexy and of the highest caliber, benefiting from both our relationship with Lionsgate for our feature offering and our network’s incredible home-grown series programming. We have hugely successful original franchises like the Power universe, alongside the best of U.S. and international drama such as The Great across our footprint and Godfather of Harlem and Gangs of London in key territories. We’re also priced relatively inexpensively because we are a complement, not competition, to the SVOD giants. We offer a completely bespoke selection of incredible, entertaining, adult-focused drama for each territory, and we’re seeing the benefits of that strategy in our subscriber growth and retention. 8/21 WORLD SCREEN 23

WS: How are you supplementing the slate of Starz originals with third-party acquisitions? KALLE: We are always on the lookout for incredible series—and increasingly looking for co-production opp ortunities for locallanguage productions directly alongside our third-party acquisitions. Power Book III: Raising Kanan is among the Starz original series available on StarzPlay.
WS: Are you acquiring for the entire footprint, or do you do select acquisitions for specific countries or regions? KALLE: A mix, depending on what we feel will work well and where—and where there are rights available. Having been in operation for around three years in our key territories and growing that footprint almost every month with new partners globally, we have a wealth of data helping us understand exactly what our subscribers want. We also pride ourselves on flexibility, which is how we’ve come to create really interesting and fruitful co-production partnerships— and also be the home of some tentpole series like Killing Eve in key territories like Germany, for example. WS: What sorts of shows are you eyeing as we head into 2022? Every day there seems to be a new headline about a shoot having to pause because of an infection, as the seemingly endless alphabet of Covid-19 variants plagues back-to-normal plans. But, against the odds, producers are making it work. Just look at the U.K., where, in the last 12 months, the Film and TV Production Restart Scheme has helped 640 projects get back on set. Unveiled last July, the program was established to deliver £500 million in assistance to film and TV projects that were ready to start or restart but unable to secure insurance against potential Covid-19 related delays and interruptions. Similar initiatives are in place in other territories. And with producers clamoring to get their projects finished, the demand for studio space appears to be surging. In the last few weeks alone, plans for expansive new soundstages have been announced in the U.K. and Australia. Expect much more in this space because the demand for great content is seemingly endless right now. The question is, is there enough great talent to deliver the quality that insatiable audiences have come to expect? —Mansha Daswani

S
herlock: The Russian Chronicles sees the iconic British detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle attempt to track down the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper, who has fled to St. Petersburg to evade punishment for his crimes. From Sreda and Yellow, Black and White and the streaming platform START, the late 19th-century-set Russianlanguage series is distributed by ZDF Enterprises. “The main thing for the team was to try to make the show stand out because our Sherlock should have his own tone, his own voice, his own habits,” says Nurbek Egen, director of the series. “We were really bothered about how to make it stand out in the market, so we could show how we respect the original idea, but also be a bit newer and do something special.”

Alongside Sherlock’s mission to apprehend Jack the Ripper, the series finds the detective tackling a variety of cases of the week as well. He also has a love interest in the form of Sophia, who, along with Dr. Kartsev, helps him find his bearings in the unfamiliar terrain. “All of these stories present a mix of different genres,” says Irina Sosnovaya, a producer on the series from Yellow, Black and White. “It’s not just crime stories; it’s a blend of everything— mystery, thriller, a bit of horror, romance as well.”

Written by Oleg Malovichko, Sherlock: The Russian Chronicles also offers a reinvention of a character that has been popular since the release of a series of Sherlock films in the region in the 1980s. The show’s unique spin on the well-known character was a perfect fit for START. “When you do it together with a streamer, it gives you a lot of freedom,” says Daria Bondarenko, executive VP of sales and acquisitions at START and Yellow, Black and White. “We really liked the story and we thought this new take on Sherlock, this kind of fish-out-of-water story, would really be a match.”

Deceit B
ased on one of the most controversial undercover missions in Metropolitan Police history, Deceit centers on a female officer tasked with winning the trust of the prime suspect in a murder investigation. The series, produced by Story Films for Channel 4 and distributed by All3Media International, comes from writer and executive producer Emilia di Girolamo, whose time working in a prison informed her approach to adapting the story. “For me to tackle true crime, it has to feel relevant,” says di Girolamo. “If you’re going to trawl through people’s lives and essentially examine their very darkest moments, you need a really good reason to do that. This case, at this moment in history, gave me that perfect opportunity.”

The case at the center of Deceit—the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell—dominated British headlines. Under pressure to catch the killer, a female police officer (known as Sadie Byrne in the series) is called upon to adopt the persona of Lizzie James to ensnare suspect Colin Stagg. “When the case against Colin Stagg collapsed, Lizzie James, the police and the criminal profiler who masterminded the operation were all sort of held to account, and their careers and reputations were left in tatters,” explains di Girolamo.
“All3Media International has a brilliant true-crime library, and I’m thrilled that Deceit is now a part of that.” —Emilia di Girolamo
In a market saturated with male-dominated true-crime stories, di Girolamo wanted the focus of Deceit to be on that of the female undercover agent. “I wanted to put her right at the heart and center of the drama in the same way that she was put at the heart of the operation,” she says. With its twists and turns, universal themes and cinematic scope, di Girolamo has no doubt that Deceit will intrigue audiences across the globe. “All3Media International has a brilliant true-crime library, and I’m thrilled that Deceit is now a part of that,” she says.

Alongside its robust lineup of sports and acquired international films and series, Viaplay has carved out an impressive reputation for its successful—and growing—slate of originals. Filippa Wallestam, executive VP and chief content officer at NENT Group, tells TV Drama about the strategy for original content as Viaplay expands its footprint and the continued need for acquired shows. TV DRAMA: How are you managing this expanding slate? WALLESTAM: It’s fair to say we have a fantastic team! We’re all very passionate about what we do. That’s the key. And we’re structuring more around what we really believe in. What projects are we prepared to fight for? If a potential project is a bit unclear in its fit with our strategy, we’d rather focus more on unique Nordic stories and big brand-building tentpole shows. We announced Billy the Kid recently; that’s a fantastic project for us to be part of [alongside EPIX in the U.S.]. We’ll continue to do those. We know the Nordics, so it’s relatively easy. That is a new challenge, but the way of telling the stories is the same, and even in the new markets we go into, we want to stay true to our values. You need to adapt locally and tweak things in different ways, but there are many similarities. TV DRAMA: You’re doing English- and local-language productions. How do you determine what direction to take? WALLESTAM: It’s something we assess on a project-by-project basis. Some stories should be purely local. Other projects are naturally in English. It could be a location where they need to speak the language. For Hilma, we discussed if it should be in Swedish. We agreed that she is such an international person who is well known across the globe, so it makes sense for us to do it in English with a combination of Nordic and international stars. Lasse can work with both. It is on a case-by-case basis, but these big projects we do with big budgets, where we will finance most of it ourselves, will usually be in English.

TV DRAMA: What role do acquisitions play on Viaplay? WALLESTAM: It’s changing. We’re creating our own productions and, of course, they become increasingly important. Our own content is starting to drive sales. Having said that, we have a lot of very strong, long-term relationships with the U.S. players. Those are collaborations and operations we intend to continue. They fill different purposes. We want to have a broad service, and we want to have something to offer everyone. It has been challenging to understand what we’re going to get from the U.S. But I’m excited about our output deals. We are working on our own and building up that layer, but we really value the strong relationships we have with the studios. he 2021 edition of Series Mania had originally been slated for May and June, but after careful consideration regarding Covid-19 vaccine rollouts, the new dates were unveiled earlier this year and plans were put in place for an even more robust event. “Moving the dates has allowed us to take this extra time to prepare our live event with updated safety guidelines and restrictions based on the recommendations of the French government, health authorities and city officials from Lille,” says Laurence Herszberg, founder and general director of Series Mania. “Our aim and goal 8/21 WORLD SCREEN 41

In this transitional year, and while travel is still uncertain, we are taking audiences on an international journey, with confirmed stops in the U.K., Australia, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Israel, along with brand-new halts in Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Colombia and Taiwan.” The Series Mania Festival will feature 50 new series, 25 world premieres, 462 screenings from more than 40 territories, guest stars and a slew of events, offering eight days of culture and celebration. The Series Mania Forum (August 30 to September 1) is complemented by the all-new Creative Bazaar (August 25 to 29), an incubator with international flavor. The Forum will again host the CoPro Pitching Sessions and will benefit from the new digital platform. Meanwhile, the international Lille Dialogues summit (August 31) offers an opportunity for discussion and proposals to support the audiovisual industry. 42 WORLD SCREEN 8/21

ighlighting projects across the documentary, drama series and film categories, MIA—International Audiovisual Market aims to facilitate business opportunities for the development and creation of new content for the global market. Now preparing for its seventh edition, MIA has become a major industry event, capable of evolving and growing with the times. “MIA has tripled the industry presence and activities over the years, but in particular, has proven to be able to embrace and thrive in a fast-changing market environment, often anticipating the needs of the industry,” says Lucia Milazzotto, MIA’s market director. “In addition, MIA has proved—in 2020 more than ever— 44 WORLD SCREEN 8/21

to stand side-by-side with those players who create, produce and invest in high-end innovative content, becoming, in only six years and almost seven editions, a trendsetting point for the national and international industry.”
“MIA has proven to be able to embrace and thrive in a fastchanging market environment.” —Lucia Milazzotto
Created by the APA (Italy’s Audiovisual Producers Association) and ANICA (National Association of Cinema and Audiovisual Industries), MIA is born out of a partnership between private and public bodies. “In particular, as a collective entity of the entire value chain—from producers to distributors, from technical industries to sales agents and new players—ANICA, together with APA, directly produces MIA, transferring knowledge, up-to-date information, trends analysis and collective needs of the entire industry,” explains Francesco Rutelli, president of ANICA. “This approach allows MIA to be a very efficient environment.” Giancarlo Leone, president of APA, adds, “For APA, MIA is a fundamental project because it has given our industry the opportunity to have a market in its own home, where everybody can get noticed in front of an international audience, and it has offered a showcase of excellence from which to source in order to create large co-productions and important business agreements.” 8/21 WORLD SCREEN 45
