40th Anniversary Book 45th Anniversary Book 50th Anniversary Video
Introduction: WT President
Dear World Taekwondo Family,
This year we commemorate the 50th Founding Anniversary of the World Taekwondo. Since its humble beginnings with 35 representatives from 17 founding Member National Associations at the inaugural General Assembly, the World Taekwondo has blossomed into the fourth largest international federation in the Olympic and Paralympic movements, with a global membership of 213 MNAs from 2023.
Indeed, Taekwondo’s outreach is phenomenal with a global representation of 53 MNAs in Africa, 44 in Asia, 52 in Europe, 19 in Oceania, and 45 in Pan America within half a century. The representation extends to the podium, with more than 100 MNAs having won medals at the World Taekwondo-promoted championships. When the medals won by MNAs at the continental and open championships are factored in, we can truly appreciate Taekwondo as a global phenomenon.
I wish to thank each and every one of you – the Taekwondo masters, the athletes, the coaches, the technical officials, the administrators, and the volunteers – for your contributions to the development of Taekwondo worldwide. Thank you for always having Taekwondo in your hearts and using it as a medium to promote peace to the world.
Taekwondo inspires and fosters partnerships for the underprivileged, through the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation and its Hope and Dreams projects, as well as the World Taekwondo Development Programme and its Taekwondo Cares projects. We strive to develop global citizens who, through their experiences, can make the world a better place.
I am delighted to inform you that Taekwondo currently has the second largest number of refugee athletes to date for the IOC Olympic Scholarship Programme for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Taekwondo gives hope and dreams to these athletes and I wish them all the best in their journey to Paris.
In addition for the first time ever, Virtual Taekwondo will be featured in the inaugural Olympic Esports Weeks to be held in Singapore on June 22-25, 2023, making Taekwondo the first and only combat sport to be included in the programme. This is an outstanding achievement for the World Taekwondo’s ambitions to have Virtual Taekwondo included as an official medal sport in future Olympic Games.
Last but certainly not least, the World Taekwondo will celebrate its Golden Jubilee at a special Gala on the occasion of the World Taekwondo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, in May 2023. It has been a historic 50 years of progress, and we will strive even harder for sustained excellence towards World Taekwondo’s Centenary.
In this regard, wish to once again express my gratitude to each and every one of your, the World Taekwondo family, for your continued support of Taekwondo around the world. Thank you for always having Peace in Mind, Taekwondo at Heart.
Sincerely yours,
Chungwon Choue President, World Taekwondo
Foreword: IOC President
Dear President of World Taekwondo, My Dear Friend Dr. Choue,
Dear Olympic Friends,
It is my great pleasure to congratulate World Taekwondo on your 50th anniversary. As you celebrate this milestone, you can look back at 50 years of great progress.
Starting with 17 member associations 50 years ago, you made your Olympic debut at Olympic Games Sydney 2000. Since then, you have not stopped growing and developing your sport. In this context I would like to in particular highlight the outstanding achievements having been accomplished under the great leadership of your President Choue.
He has made Taekwondo one of the fastest – if not the fastest – growing sport in the world which is now a truly global sport. As your 213 member associations today underline in an impressive way, Taekwondo now enjoys worldwide appeal. In this way, you are bringing together people all over the world in peaceful competition – and thereby promoting our shared Olympic values.
This is why I would like to thank everybody at World Taekwondo.
From promoting gender equality, to strengthening athlete representation, to advancing sustainability and climate action, or trailblazing in the digital world – at World Taekwondo, you are promoting sport and its values in an outstanding way. Your exemplary and pioneering work to support refugees around the world is a perfect illustration of the power of sport as a force for good in the world.
In fact, World Taekwondo was a partner from the very beginning when the IOC created the first-ever IOC Refugee Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Rio 2016. Especially through the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, you are addressing not only refugee athletes, but the refugee community at large – using Taekwondo to empower refugees and to bring hope to one of the most vulnerable groups in society today. This really is the Olympic spirit in action and for this
I would like to thank you and congratulate you from the bottom of my heart.
Today, World Taekwondo and the IOC enjoy a strong partnership. Together, we are working towards the realisation of Olympic Agenda 2020+5, with a strong focus on how sport can contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Building on the strong foundation that you have at World Taekwondo, you can look to the future with great confidence – on the road to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and beyond.
Because as your athletes have shown us: we can only go faster, aim higher, become stronger, if we stand together – in solidarity.
Our partnership is the perfect illustration of this, our new Olympic motto: Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together. In this Olympic spirit, I wish World Taekwondo all the very best for the next 50 years – and beyond.
