Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.

Millions flock to leading light of the Middle East, Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority – considered the World’s Leading Tourist Board by the World Travel Awards – is the body which manages the tourism assets of the Arabian Gulf emirate of Abu Dhabi. Year-round sunshine, pristine beaches, spectacular sand dunes and a pulsating cosmopolitan lifestyle combine with worldclass infrastructure to make Abu Dhabi an enchanting destination for guests from around the world.

In 2011

Looking Forward

For the first time in its history, the emirate is set to welcome two million guests to stay in its hotels and long-stay apartments in 2011– an increase of nearly 15 per cent on the previous year.

Just 500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi city, the 27-square kilometre Saadiyat Island is undergoing a remarkable transformation to become a world-class leisure, residential, business and cultural hub of global proportions.

“Much of this increase can be attributed to our upgraded leisure offering, the quality and outstanding value of our accommodation product and the particular success of consumer orientated programmes such as the Yas Island Show Weekends,” explained Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority Strategy and Policy Director, Lawrence Franklin.

Over the next decade, the island will welcome the Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabi, a performing arts centre and a maritime museum as it becomes the cultural capital of Abu Dhabi.

Raffles Makkah Palace defines luxury in Saudi Arabia

Fighting off steep competition from the most luxurious hotels in the Middle East, where luxury is defined, Raffles Makkah Palace was named Middle East’s Leading Luxury Hotel by the World Travel Awards earlier this year.

Raffles Makkah Overview

Innovations for 2011

Looking Forward

Raffles Makkah Palace is located in the spectacular new Abraj Al Bait complex, a seven-tower community directly adjoining the Masjid Al Haram – or Grand Mosque – and the Kaaba.

The opening of Raffles Makkah Palace in Saudi Arabia marked the beginning of a new era for the Raffles Group, who had not previously served this important market.

The Raffles Group are continuing their expansion into both new and old markets with four hotel openings in the pipeline including Raffles Makati in The Philippines, Raffles Sanya, Qingshui Bay in China, Raffles Konottaa in The Maldives and Raffles Jakarta in Indonesia.

Raffles Makkah Palace is a discreet yet highly refined residential sanctuary, featuring 213 suites with breathtaking views of the Grand Mosque and Kaaba.

Mohammed Arkobi, Vice President & Managing Director for Fairmont Raffles Hotels International - Makkah, explained this gives Raffles the opportunity to cater to the guests of the Holy City, making it a unique experience.

The design of the hotel draws inspiration from the heritage of the Middle East, in keeping with Raffles’ style of having each hotel reflect a sense of its location. Guests at the Raffles Makkah have the benefit of a mouth-watering selection of international cuisines in a choice of four restaurants. Personal butlers exemplify “heartfelt service” as they strive to anticipate residents’ needs. As Group Director of Communications & Business Development, Khaled Yamak, explained: “Raffles Makkah Palace is considered a new step in the hospitality sector in Saudi Arabia.”

World Island Awards Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, Germany 6 March 2012

ABTA_2011_DAY1_v2_Layout 1 27/10/2011 16:04 Page 26

World’s first ceremony to promote Island Tourism World Travel Awards has unveiled a new awards programme to celebrate and reward luxury tourism to island nations. World Islands Awards will take place on the eve on ITB Berlin 2012, with Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority signed as the official partner. It is the only event of its kind dedicated to recognising Island Tourism around the world.

Through this partnership, Mauritius will spearhead the drive for the promotion of Island Tourism worldwide, as well as ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the luxury tourism map. The paradise island is currently enjoying a thriving tourism economy under the leadership of Minister of Tourism, HE Nandcoomar Bodha, and Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.

The inaugural ceremony will take place at Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin’s most exclusive five-star hotel, on 6 March 2012.

Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said: “Our new partnership with World Island Awards will serve as an excellent vehicle to promote the core values of Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority – in particular our emphasis on people, the environment and the capacity to ensure customer satisfaction.”

The two-year agreement comes hot on the heels of Mauritius being named one of the coolest destinations for 2011 by Futurebrand and British Airways, and being voted “World’s Leading Island Destination” at the 2010 World Travel Awards.

The Indian Ocean nation – which is best known for its azure waters, white beaches and luxury spas – will also showcase itself as a world-class destination to travel professionals and media from around the world. Graham Cooke, Founder, World Island

Awards said: “On behalf of World Island Awards, I am delighted to have Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority as our partner. “This nation typifies luxury tourism at its finest, and serves a benchmark for how island nations can travel and tourism for social and economic betterment.” The awards will serve to reward excellence across all areas of tourism of the world’s island nations. Categories will include: “World’s Leading Island Resort”, “Asia’s Leading Island Resort” and “World’s Leading Island Destination”. Over the past thirty years, Mauritius has expanded its luxury tourism sector. The travel and tourism sector has become more vital than ever to the nation’s economy due to declining sugar prices and economic infeasibility of textile production. Limited space for tourism means that Mauritius continues to promote only elite and specialist tourism, while budget travel is not encouraged.

The property – opened in 2009 - is located in a serene fishing village on the northern Musandam Peninsula in Oman, a short hopskip-and-jump from international aviation hub Dubai. The setting is one of beautiful indigenous village style accommodations, with a private marina offering spectacular views over dramatic mountains on one side and the 1.6kilometer Zighy Bay sandy beach on the other. The peninsula's rugged mountains - which rise up to 2,100 meters above the coast and jut into the Strait of Hormuz - have a spectacular fjord-like look. Six Senses Zighy Bay is located on the Musandam Peninsula in Oman.
