Port Authority of Jamaica expands cruise options for travellers

Jamaica is the leading cruise destination in the Caribbean.

Port Authority of Jamaica Overview The Port Authority of Jamaica is a statutory corporation established by the Port Authority Act of 1972. It is the principal maritime agency responsible for the regulation and development of Jamaica’s port and shipping industry as well as the safety of all vessels navigating the ports of entry in Jamaica.

Innovations for 2011 As cruise passengers increasingly wish to stop off at new destinations, new ports are opening up around the world to accommodate this demand. Some 19.2 million cruise passengers travelled worldwide in 2011, a 4.1 per cent increase on 2010 according to Cruise Market Watch.

Looking Forward With the completion of Falmouth Port, The Port Authority is now moving swiftly on to develop new and existing ports in Jamaica. Commenting on their recent victory at the World Travel Awards Caribbean & The Americas Gala Ceremony, Minister Mike Henry, Minister of Transport and Works, Port Authority of Jamaica, explained: “It has been a pleasure to win this award. “It has been hard work to get Falmouth going and I have other ports that I have to develop in Jamaica and I look forward to expanding that development.”

Recognised as the Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Destination by the World Travel Awards earlier this year, the Port Authority of Jamaica is responsible for all of the ports in Jamaica.

Earlier this year, Jamaica opened its highlyanticipated Historic Falmouth Cruise Port. The Royal Palace & Temple are on most itineraries.

Wat Arun is one of the many world-class sights in Bangkok.

Bangkok overcomes adversity to take World Travel Awards title Earlier this year Bangkok took the title of Asia's Leading Meetings & Conference Destination at the World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony illustrating the city’s stunning recovery following a tumultuous year.

Storms – both political and tropical – have failed to knock this world-class tourist destination off course, with the city proudly taking its place as the gateway to south-east Asia. Millions visit every year to discover what it is about this world-class destination that keeps it ahead of the pack time after time. Elizabeth Randall, managing director of STR Global claims the Thai hotel industry is on the recovery path: “As overall demand and international tourist arrivals picked up again, more and more guests will again experience the Thai hospitality”.

In 2011 Bangkok welcomed the World Travel Awards for the first time in 2011, with Dusit Thani Bangkok playing host to Gala Ceremony in September.

Suprabha Moleeratanond, Director of Meetings Industry Department TCEP, Bangkok, celebrates with World Travel Awards Senior Vice President David Falcon.

Industry leaders from across the region – from India in the east, through Singapore, Malaysia,

Hong Kong, and China, to Australia and New Zealand in the west – were in town for the show. Remarkably it was the first time Thailand had hosted the prestigious event – but it is unlikely to be the last.

Looking Forward With its dizzying array of temples, hotels of every size, eclectic markets, gleaming palaces, ritzy shopping malls and famous nightlife Bangkok will continue to go from strength-tostrength in 2012. Moreover, the Tourism Authority for Thailand is planning a number of interactive and engaging consumer campaigns for a number of markets in 2012. Plans will target the following markets: student travel; the family market; repeat market; first time visitors; the luxury market; the wedding & honeymoon market and green tourism. It’s going to be a busy year!

ABTA_2011_DAY1_v2_Layout 1 27/10/2011 16:04 Page 26

World’s first ceremony to promote Island Tourism World Travel Awards has unveiled a new awards programme to celebrate and reward luxury tourism to island nations. World Islands Awards will take place on the eve on ITB Berlin 2012, with Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority signed as the official partner. It is the only event of its kind dedicated to recognising Island Tourism around the world.

Through this partnership, Mauritius will spearhead the drive for the promotion of Island Tourism worldwide, as well as ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the luxury tourism map. The paradise island is currently enjoying a thriving tourism economy under the leadership of Minister of Tourism, HE Nandcoomar Bodha, and Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.

The inaugural ceremony will take place at Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin’s most exclusive five-star hotel, on 6 March 2012.

Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said: “Our new partnership with World Island Awards will serve as an excellent vehicle to promote the core values of Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority – in particular our emphasis on people, the environment and the capacity to ensure customer satisfaction.”

The two-year agreement comes hot on the heels of Mauritius being named one of the coolest destinations for 2011 by Futurebrand and British Airways, and being voted “World’s Leading Island Destination” at the 2010 World Travel Awards.

The Indian Ocean nation – which is best known for its azure waters, white beaches and luxury spas – will also showcase itself as a world-class destination to travel professionals and media from around the world. Graham Cooke, Founder, World Island

Awards said: “On behalf of World Island Awards, I am delighted to have Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority as our partner. “This nation typifies luxury tourism at its finest, and serves a benchmark for how island nations can travel and tourism for social and economic betterment.” The awards will serve to reward excellence across all areas of tourism of the world’s island nations. Categories will include: “World’s Leading Island Resort”, “Asia’s Leading Island Resort” and “World’s Leading Island Destination”. Over the past thirty years, Mauritius has expanded its luxury tourism sector. The travel and tourism sector has become more vital than ever to the nation’s economy due to declining sugar prices and economic infeasibility of textile production. Limited space for tourism means that Mauritius continues to promote only elite and specialist tourism, while budget travel is not encouraged.

easyJet is among the largest carriers in Europe.

easyJet continues to grow following WTA success In 2011 Over the past year easyJet has quietly been redefining the possibilities of lowcost travel. Firstly, with the launch of easyJet Holidays, the organisation took the leap from airline to tour operator – offering a vast wealth of accommodation options to travellers across its route network.

Low-cost carrier easyJet flies more than 580 routes between 129 airports in 29 countries – making the carrier one of the largest in Europe

Industry insiders have also begun to take note, with easyJet recognised as Europe’s Leading Low-cost Airline for the third consecutive year at the prestigious World Travel Awards.

Looking Forward The recently confirmed spring 2012 schedule confirms easyJet will offer around 300 low

fare destinations next year – operating more flights than any other UK-based carrier. Paul Simmons, easyJet's UK Director, said: “The launch of our spring schedule offers both leisure and business passengers the opportunity to book early to secure the best fares on a wide choice of destinations across Europe and the UK.

Next the launch of Flexi fares saw the carrier begin to court business travellers keen to minimise costs during an era of economic uncertainty. Both ambitious expansions were underpinned by a developing route network, which has allowed easyJet to remain nimble when compared to the lumbering legacy airlines it is seeking to replace. A new base at London Southend Airport is a perfect example, with passengers now offered eight exciting destinations from the new hub. David Falcon, Senior Vice President, World Travel Awards present the award the award to Jenny Groves, UK Route Manager, Easyjet.
