Welcome President of the World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Ceremony 2011 When we book holidays we aim for paradise on every front: perfect weather, magnificent attractions, rich culture and sumptuous hospitality. Egypt, and Sharm el Sheikh in particular, offer this magic formula, and I am deeply honoured that World Travel Awards is hosting its first ever ceremony in this incredible corner of Africa. Our timing is also more than coincidental. Egypt is entering an exciting new dawn of hope and opportunity. And by attracting the travel industry elite to Sharm el Sheikh for our awards, we aim to showcase not only its world-class attractions and facilities but how tourism is serving as a force for good and a catalyst for change. Meanwhile the goodwill of the 2010 Fifa World Cup is continuing to reverberate across Sub-Saharan Africa, which is enjoying one of the highest tourism growth rates in the world at 8 percent for 2011, according to the UNWTO. This year is already shaping up to be the most ambitious yet in the 18-year history of World Travel Awards. I am pleased to report that the number of organisations nominated for the “Oscars of the Travel Industry has risen 13 percent year-on-year.
Meanwhile the number of voters is up 11 percent year-on-year, driven by a surge in consumer voting. This reflects how the public now rely increasingly on World Travel Awards as their gold seal of travel excellence. Winning a World Travel Award is the ultimate travel accolade, with the endorsement of over 213,000 voting travel professionals demonstrating to both the travel industry and the travel consumer that your brand stands in a class of its very own. I wish to extend a special thank you to our event partners Savoy el Sheikh, Soho Square and weclickmedia, as well as our media partners Magic 105.4, eTurboNews, TravelDailyNews, Passport Magazine and Breaking Travel News. Honouring and promoting excellence and innovation in travel and tourism are why we are gathered all here. Thank you for joining us on this very special occasion, and congratulations for your incredible achievements.

Spotlight on
Africa & Indian Ocean
During the 1980s African tourism was seen as a niche pursuit, with only a few hundred thousand hardy travellers making trips to a handful of destinations. As we move into the second half of 2011, nothing could be further from the truth – with tourism on the continent having truly come of age. A record 49.4 million visitors arrived last year, according to figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, generating $32 billion in revenue. This growth follows strong increases in visitor numbers in 2009 – making Africa the only continent to record consistent growth during the worst of the economic downturn. South Africa crowned these achievements by hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup to universal acclaim last year. The event saw thousands of sports fan make the journey from around the world ahead of the tournament while also generating a store of goodwill which will last a lifetime among holidaymakers.

Zimbabwe, which recorded 2.2 million visitors, was a surprise success story, while Mozambique and Nigeria both saw over a million guests in 2010.
the heart of the protests, and Tunisians in these areas are looking forward to getting back to work and making sure our visitors have a wonderful time.”
It is in this positive perspective we must consider the recent developments in the north of the continent.
Our hosts here in Egypt are a perhaps the best example of this continued trend, with the resorts of the Red Sea standing ready to welcome guests from around the world once again.
While the political changes wrought in Tunisia and Egypt have been of monumental importance for the people of those countries, the impact on tourism has been surprisingly modest. Key destinations remain largely unaffected, with the rise of tourism in the region continuing unabated. As Anissa Ramoundi, UK & Ireland director for the Tunisia National Tourism Office, explains: “The tourist resorts were never at
It remains to be seen whether Sharm El Sheikh – winner of Africa's Leading Beach Destination title in 2010 – can retain its title tonight and truly illustrate the resolve of the tourism industry here in Egypt.

Aviation in Africa South Africa Airways (SAA) has been a beacon of success for a sometimes troubled aviation sector in Africa. Winner of the Africa’s Leading Airline award last year at the World Travel Awards, the flagcarrier launched a non-stop service between Johannesburg and New York in January, while also boosting connections through codeshare agreements with TAP Portugal and JetBlue Airways. Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc and Air Namibia join SAA as nominees for title this evening, making it one of the most fiercely competitive categories.
Out in the bush Back on the ground, it is Mantis Group which has been blazing a trail in Africa since World Travel Awards was last in town. In conjunction with Grand Towers the group launched Nigeria’s first luxury Boutique Hotel in Abuja, while Baines’ River Camp, situated in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi Valley, and New York’s iconic Sherry Netherland Hotel both joined the diversifying portfolio of properties on offer. Mantis also moved into the luxury serviced apartment segment by introducing The Lawhill Luxury Apartments in Cape Town.
Down in South Africa, The Saxon – which last year walked away with the title of South Africa’s Leading Hotel – has been making improvements to ensure it wins again this year. Three Saxon Villas have recently been introduced, perfect for those who want fivestar hotel service with the privacy and freedom of staying in their own space. Surrounded by lush gardens planted with indigenous species, with water features for complete privacy, the new buildings display the best of contemporary architecture, accentuated with natural stone-clad walls, with interiors of great peace and tranquility. Africa’s Leading Luxury Lodge, Shambala Private Reserve, also in South Africa, has also been investing heavily this year to make sure it stays ahead of the field.
On the road again In line with tourism around the globe, environmentalism is gaining ground in the African tourism industry, with car rental giant Avis leading the way. “Since we started our green journey at Avis, we have gained remarkable new insights into our business, and have been able to make savings that in the long term will amount to millions of rand,” said Wayne Duvenage, chief executive of Avis Rent a Car.
Avis is recognised across the industry for extending its sustainability initiatives beyond carbon offsetting to include a holistic and innovative approach towards reducing the company’s negative impact on the environment – from improved water use and energy reduction to integrated waste management. Europcar – named as the World's Leading Green Transport Solution Company by the World Travel Awards – has also been taking its responsibilities seriously. For example, Europcar is giving maximum visibility to its environmentally-friendly cars and encourages consumers to choose a “greener” car when making reservations. In addition to adding a section dedicated to eco-friendly cars on its web site, the Company provides specific information about the CO2 emissions of all models in its rental car fleet.
African Tourism From the beach resorts in the north of the continent, through the unique safari destinations sough of the Saharan to the metropolitan sights of Cape Town and Johannesburg in the south, tourism is among the most vibrant, innovative and exciting anywhere on earth. It is this industry we are here to celebrate tonight – good luck to all our nominees!

World Travel Awards “The Oscars of the Travel Industry” Since its inception in 1993, World Travel Awards has been recognising and rewarding those organisations that have made the greatest contribution to the global travel and tourism industry. With voting growing year on year – over 213,000 travel professionals are now registered to vote – World Travel Awards continues to build its reputation as the ‘Oscars of the travel industry’. The awards programme is a global search for the very best travel and tourism brands, with winners from the six regional ceremonies progressing to the Grand Final at the end of the year. Graham E. Cooke, Founder & President, World Travel Awards, said: “World Travel Awards is a unique benchmark for industry quality and business excellence in every region and sector.” “The increase in registered voters, despite a global recession, demonstrates the vital role of performance delivery in a challenging and highly competitive marketplace,” he added. For the tourism trade, winning a World Travel Award is more than an award – it is an endorsement from the thousands of professionals from around the globe, as well as a gold seal to the consumer of travel excellence guaranteed.

World Island Awards Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, Germany 6 March 2012
WTA_Africa_Prog_v4_Layout 1 05/09/2011 15:04 Page 60
World’s first ceremony to promote Island Tourism World Travel Awards has unveiled a new awards programme to celebrate and reward luxury tourism to island nations. World Islands Awards will take place on the eve on ITB Berlin 2012, with Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority signed as the official partner. It is the only event of its kind dedicated to recognising Island Tourism around the world.
60
Through this partnership, Mauritius will spearhead the drive for the promotion of Island Tourism worldwide, as well as ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the luxury tourism map. The paradise island is currently enjoying a thriving tourism economy under the leadership of Minister of Tourism, HE Nandcoomar Bodha, and Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.
The inaugural ceremony will take place at Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin’s most exclusive five-star hotel, on 6 March 2012.
Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said: “Our new partnership with World Island Awards will serve as an excellent vehicle to promote the core values of Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority – in particular our emphasis on people, the environment and the capacity to ensure customer satisfaction.”
The two-year agreement comes hot on the heels of Mauritius being named one of the coolest destinations for 2011 by Futurebrand and British Airways, and being voted “World’s Leading Island Destination” at the 2010 World Travel Awards.
The Indian Ocean nation – which is best known for its azure waters, white beaches and luxury spas – will also showcase itself as a world-class destination to travel professionals and media from around the world.
Graham Cooke, Founder, World Island Awards said: “On behalf of World Island Awards, I am delighted to have Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority as our partner. “This nation typifies luxury tourism at its finest, and serves a benchmark for how island nations can travel and tourism for social and economic betterment.” The awards will serve to reward excellence across all areas of tourism of the world’s island nations. Categories will include: “World’s Leading Island Resort”, “Asia’s Leading Island Resort” and “World’s Leading Island Destination”. Over the past thirty years, Mauritius has expanded its luxury tourism sector. The travel and tourism sector has become more vital than ever to the nation’s economy due to declining sugar prices and economic infeasibility of textile production. Limited space for tourism means that Mauritius continues to promote only elite and specialist tourism, while budget travel is not encouraged.
