A media is born when it mediates, when people are confronted with it. While Virtual Reality existed before, until now, we could not directly call it a media. It was reserved for the military, for the labs and for the car manufacturers; a sophisticated tool in the service of the industry. And this is 2016. The VR headsets are out and the Pandora’s box of content creation is opened with its overwhelming potential to reinvent, including, but not limited to; Education, Medicine, Technology, Industry, Journalism, Cinema and Architecture. For his sixth birthday, Salar Shahna received the Encyclopaedia of Cinema - a huge book larger than him covering the entire history of cinema from the Kinetoscope to Terminator 2.

Salar devoured this book daydreaming about the pioneers who have crafted the language of the Seventh Art. And now we have been given the chance at this very precise moment in history to write the beginning of a new book on the “Eleventh Art”. What’s happening now feeds the first chapters of mankind’s introduction to extended realities; and this is the exact reason we have founded the World VR Forum. We are a team of individuals that are willing and able to come up with ideas, but also defend those ideas and implement them. Flexible and versatile, constantly owing with the never-ending changes, the founding team’s achievements are nothing short of inspirational.

WVRF has not only held its inaugural event in Crans-Montana, in May, but with more than 50 speakers and 1,500 participants attending, we surpassed all expectations. The outcome was 300% higher than anticipated. Putting VR on top of the World in the Swiss Alps goes beyond a statement or geographical attachment, it’s about balance. The mountains remain one of the last sanctuaries of real reality almost untouched by man. This must be the place.

This is again just the beginning and we will keep growing while opening more and more to the community to build together the home of the next generation human expression platform.

We seek to introduce audiences around the globe to the magic and excitement of the VR / AR experience while shining the spotlight on those virtual pioneers that are paving the way for the future.

The World VR Forum was born from a desire to make a difference in the world and we are very proud of the accomplishments realised in the first year of public operation from Switzerland to the World. From the Swiss Alps to the Milky Way, Virtual Reality comes to play.

host city of our annual summit

From the Director of Crans-Montana Tourism and Ccongress Luckily, Virtual Reality will never replace reality ! Nevertheless, Virtual Reality is at bloom, fertilizing with its high-tech seeds the grounds of many different industries, including the field of travel and leisure. Virtual Reality, as well as Augmented Reality, will invade communication and display the world from a whole new angle. Specifically, VR will offer a chance to immerse oneself in our region’s assets and experiences from anywhere on the planet and will give a foretaste of reality that awaits our visitors on the spot. As soon as spring marched through the door in 2016, Crans-Montana was approached by an enthusiastic and dynamic team to organize the first World Virtual Reality Forum (WVRF) in the nick of time, in May. Convinced of the competence, commitment and professionalism of the Founding Team of WVRF, Crans-Montana Tourism & Congress (CMTC) did not hesitate to take up the challenge of organizing the first edition in May 2016. Always open to development and innovation, CMTC seized the opportunity to move ahead in this area.

The success of the first edition demonstrates both a strong development potential of the forum and the importance of the VR universe. Practically in an instant, the founders of WVRF have taken a leading role and established their presence worldwide as speakers and exhibitors. WVRF, therefore, opens up access to the largest platforms to promote and develop Crans-Montana. Without a doubt, CMTC is committed to the future development of WVRF. We are convinced that WVRF will strengthen its position as a world leader and that Crans-Montana will also work towards developing this field. We are delighted that Crans-Montana can be dynamic and innovative, like WVRF. A bientôt ! See you in Crans-Montana, Bruno Huggler

The first edition of WVRF was a great success, offering breathtaking experiences and up to date lectures by some of the most knowledgeable speakers in the VR business.

our organization

Why did we initiate the World VR Forum ? 2016 has become the year of a radically new narrative form  - Virtual Reality. In the last 12 months we have experienced VR in many forms, including : gaming, walking across a 3,000-meter high suspension bridge on top of the Swiss Alps, to a refugee camp in Syria.

The very immersion itself prompts questions we have not yet tackled. The World VR Forum will also be a fantastic opportunity for scientists and researchers to question the physiological and psychological effects of Virtual Reality on our body and senses.

VR technology is allowing the user to enjoy these adventures but more importantly to experience the exhilaration of flying through space, the emotions that one can feel when fearful of falling, and the empathy towards a story about refugees. VR storytelling can prompt an increased global response to the ongoing conflicts and problems in the world. VR is not just for gaming anymore. Like the introduction of radio or television, in their day, these new delivery systems changed our feelings about the world we live in. VR will fundamentally change the landscape of how we experience many stories.

VR is going to become a significant part of all of our lives, but the stakes will increase with its use. Over the next few years the World VR Forum will create a platform for debate, exploration and exhibition for what VR and AR will bring to the world. There is no doubt, its effects will be felt globally through every part of our society ; it’s our mission to not just witness it but to lead the conversation.

The World VR Forum has asked where do Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality fit within our daily lives ? What are the boundaries ? What are the rules ? There are so many applications for VR, but we are just starting to scratch the surface. As more developers and filmmakers recognize it as a viable platform, Virtual Reality will become common practice as a storytelling medium.

We are supported by the fact that Switzerland is a magnet for multinational companies, global politics and international NGOs. Its investing in new technology, is an important provider of knowledge and credibility for world markets and is a global financial capital with a competitive corporate atmosphere. We welcome the world to Crans-Montana as we begin to write a new chapter in the history of Virtual Reality, technology and Switzerland itself.

As with all emerging media, VR presents opportunities in education, industry, science, medicine, leisure services and so much more. Nevertheless such a powerful media demands serious ethical consideration.

‘‘ The World VR Forum has played an important role in shaping the conversation around VR in Switzerland while also ensuring a global perspective. ’’ Dominic Sutter, Swissnex, San Francisco

- 25 -

Switzerland, leader of innovation WVRF’s assets are humane and geopolitical. Switzerland offers the ideal setting in the Alps while hosting the foremost international stakeholders of VR/AR and a strongly committed multidisciplinary team.

The World VR Forum contributes to these investments and encourages the actors of the Swiss culture and technology by putting the spotlight on them. Virtual Reality celebrates the alliance of economy, culture and innovation.

Switzerland, at the heart of Europe, with its tradition of openness, international mediation and multilateralism, is an ideal home for World VR Forum and can find a real local and national strategic interest in the long term.

Crans-Montana is intimate enough to provide a secure setting and privacy to participants, but large enough to create a key location for Virtual Reality. Nested in an environment of outstanding natural beauty of the Swiss Alps, the village is a strategical point for experiencing an alternate reality.

In the constant quest of reinventing itself, Switzerland has implemented a policy that supports culture and new technologies through organizations such as Pro Helvetia, Swissnex, CTi (commission for Technology and Innovation) and Presence Switzerland. The results are convincing, to name a few - Swiss studios such as Apelab, Somniacs, and Artanim - all which have toured the world with thrilling VR projects.

World VR Forum’s annual summit will bring support, evolution and growth along its journey. This event will extend throughout the village in different venues and host a growing number of visitors in the long run.

Switzerland’s Arts and Polytechnic Schools are the forefront of research on VR, and this is why we offer them a central place in this event. These institutions from the next generation attract brains from around the world.

SUMMIT - 29 -

description and facts The annual summit consists of two components : festival and conference. The conference is about confronting ideas and understanding the current and future directions of VR/AR creations as well as identifying the key challenges facing broadcasters, developers and cultural industries in general when they are dabbling in this young, untamed medium. Its greatest strenght was the cross-disciplinary approach connecting the scientific scene with the creative world. Our festival presents VR content in innovative ways. A unique philosphy bringing a museal dimension to our VR selection. Each experience has its own space custom designed. Installations

are produced in collaboration with WVRF Committee and the Artists. The Festival augments the experience in the headset with real reality. Its core mission is to errect VR as true art form, raising awareness of the public and the recognition by the media. VR installations in 360°, local and international, were presented at the conference covering everything from games and videos designed for entertainment, animation, sci-fi to provocative avant-garde videos and sociological, medical, scientific, environmental and educational projects.

conferences

There were two days of conferences on May 6 and 7. The overall programme was composed between the artistic direction of World VR Forum and our Conference Chairman, Michel Reilhac, an independent interactive story architect.

Conference Chairman Michel Reilhac VR producer and director THE BIENNALE CINEMACOLLEGE, VENICE BIENNALE

‘‘ 2016 will see the emergence, probably the outbreak, of a radically new narrative form : Virtual Reality. Very seldom do we have the opportunity to witness the rise of a new formal language in the development of a new technology. Moreover, what makes this upcoming and awaited medium unique, is the economic power that it generates with a calculated return on investment strategy. Rarely has there been such a foreseen and planned set up of a commercial, mediatic and technologic tsunami overriding economic and creative expectations. One of the exciting challenges that will unfold over the next months is how the artists and authors will appropriate and use this new medium. The magnitude of the bid put on VR by the audiovisual industry is such that it could raise concerns about globalization of standard formats. But ultimately, the technology on hand is quite affordable and new cinematic experiences of all kinds are being created with effervescence within a variety of fields.

Creation in all its forms is taking hold of Virtual Reality. Formal innovation is swarming and imaginative initiatives are budding everywhere. To highlight this emergence, Europe needs a bridgehead that celebrates and anchors this creativity and technology. Linking and connecting, in the geographic heart of the continent, the pioneers in VR, creators of a new VR language, and their audience. Everything is yet to be invented. There won’t be a more exciting time than the coming years, when this new form will take shape. Like explorers gathering together to take stock before clearing virgin territories, meeting in Crans-Montana becomes a necessary evidence. See you there ! ‘‘

An entire section named POP has been given space for VR at the festival this year for the last weekend. Upstreaming the launch of POP, it was our greatest pleasure to partner with Q during TIFF2016. The outcome was outstanding. Q is a major brand in the field of event management, not only building activations on leading cultural events but also creating a very special set-up, bringing high-profile professionals, celebrities and media together. All made with the finest british taste. Alongside the LA Times Celebrity Studio where artists visit Jay L. Clendenin to get their pictures done, we have hosted an exclusive VR lounge.

High-profile celebrities in Hollywood are used to working with new techniques of filmmaking from green-screens to motion capture. Avatar is one of the greatest examples of the decade. Animation films also work with the best talents to give their characters recognizable voices. The purpose of this spin-off event for World VR Forum was to reach out this community to expose them to premium VR experiences and to raise their interest in the medium. It is our duty to communicate to celebrities as VR needs them for mass-adoption. These iconic figures are essential for the audience, and their active part in VR content is needed to elevate the quality of the works.

10 - 12 OCTOBER 2016 WAN - IFRA , WORLD PUBLISH EXPO Recent technological advancements have led to exciting new ways of telling stories. Sensors, such as 3D scanners, eye and hand tracking devices and GPS on mobile phones enable us to capture information in real time. Displays, such as immersive 3D goggles, augmented reality glasses, and light field projectors, make it possible to merge virtual and real world media. The Internet empowers users to collaborate, interact and modify the storyline. However, the burning question is still if VR Journalism is possible for the average newsroom ? The answer lies in understanding the production tools and integration in workflow and content management systems in a seamless way. Experts from the academic, industry and tech fields gathered at the Digital Media World in Vienna in October to discuss and exchange points of view on opportunities of these news technologies.

WVRF took an active role discussing the technology with media representatives, tech companies and solution providers and is assured that immersive VR journalism will be one of the most profound ways of telling stories in the future. Marketing Specialist and digital concept developer, Thomas Wittenburg at Visiolink states, « Many newsrooms have already experimented with VR. As the technology becomes more mature and available, many more will undoubtedly join the action. When the technology becomes able to broadcast live, VR could be served as premium content by the media ». Hosted by WAN-IFRA, the World VR Forum provided a selection of VR Journalistic experiences produced by the NYT, BBC, Die Welt, CNN and the Economist for some of the 6,000 conference participants to experience VR Journalism for the first time.

This session was organized by the WAN-IFRA’s Global Alliance for Media Innovation led by Andrew Perkis, Professor at Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Professor Perkis discussed why this is a good time to get into Immersive and VR Journalism, covering the areas like the starting point, the VR communities and their reactions to this new technology. While providing a thorough history of VR to present day, Clayton Doherty, President and Co-Founder of World VR Forum reported the success of WVRF inaugural summit in Crans-Montana, Switzerland last May and talked about the VR/Journalism collaboration that WAN-INFRA will be bringing to Switzerland next May. Duncan Hooper, Editor in Chief, digital platforms at EURONEWS - France was certainly the speaker with the most hands-on experience when it comes to producing and achieving a quality VR news story.

20 - 21 OCTOBER 2016 WORLD GLOBAL MEDIA FORUM (VMF) 2016 Video has revolutionized self expression for both journalists and spectators, especially in 2016, with interactive live streaming bringing immediacy to our world and with VR, AR, and 360 videos creating new immersive experiences. CCTV, whose users include BBC, CNN, AFP and AL Jazeera is China’s largest and most authoritative video news agency which currently serves 1,700 television channels and hundreds of internet media agencies, providing a wide variety of news footage from China and the world, proudly presented the Global Media Forum (VMF) themed accordingly “Video is changing the world” from 20 to 21 October, 2016 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. VMF 2016 invited professionals from global media, artificial intelligence and big data, interactive live streaming and VR technology research and development to share and explore cutting-edge ideas in the forum, ranging from content production, innovative concepts and cloud platform content production to application of artificial intelligence and capital influences in the media. In addition, media and media investors shared and discussed specific cases in the digital era.

After presenting a brief summary on the general state of VR and clarifying the vocabulary for the audience : VR 360 video, 3 degrees of freedom versus 6 degrees, Mr. Shahna from WVRF has demonstrated 2 applications of VR live streaming concerning the 360 video and the integration of the production pipeline in the newsrooms, the advantages and disadvantages of different systems of caption, and postproduction. The challenges of creating live content were not comparable to the production of fiction, with the need to simplify the filming process and to optimize the quality of data treatment. Another live content presentation that was demonstrated in the talk and which was not mentioned by any other participant was the exploration of live news 2D integrated into social VR spaces such as Altspace to stimulate and to encourage the citizen debate and interactions between the users. The first network of China CCTV shows its concern for innovation and in addition to other major news networks such as Reuters or CNN, was able to invite VR personalities. Classic media now has an immersive content strategy like The New York Times, mixed with that of specialized VR studios like the Emblematic Group. This event provided a rich exchange with leaders of different media groups.

Salar Shahna hosted a panel on creation, production and distribution of live content consisting of leaders of Chinese media.

28 OCTOBER 2016 DIGITAL MEDIA CAMPUS The Digital Campus convenes university communicators, marketers, and others interested in leveraging new technologies to increase the visibility of their higher education institution. During this 6th annual event, we covered issues of specific concern to Swiss university communicators with a focus on Science Storytelling. Swissnex San Francisco organizes Digital Campus since 2011. The aim is to connect various Swiss universities to discuss the impact of new communication technologies at universities. Salar Shahna was invited on the behalf of Swissnex San Francisco. During the conference Salar Shahna has insisted on two elements, first, the VR as an internal and external communication tool for the universities, on the one hand to promote its programmes, its campus, its region of implantation to the outside and on the other hand to ease the integration of newcomers with VR introduction

programmes. On a completely different level, he highlighted the prospects of the VR distance learning market and the creation of a new market for the universities and a new way of exploring the courses and taking the audience out of their comfort zone. Swissnex SF has a very strong dynamic and a national presence thanks to this event, a lot of universities have responded to Olten and force, noting that for many the VR was not released. However, the enormous appeal proves the importance of this type of event + the test area was offered by WVRF during the breaks. We thank Julia Kuhn for her invitation. We were very pleased to bring Liz Neeley, the Executive Director of the Story Collider, to Switzerland this October. In her role, she focuses on true, personal stories of science, blending the best ideas from the arts with the strongest research on communication. Over the past ten years, Liz has specialized in environmental science, journalism, and social media. In her workshops, coaching, speaking, and writing, she is always searching for the best ways of spreading ideas through influential networks. She is a member of the Advisory Board to the CommsLab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

organizations

and

We visited two universities, National Institute of Design (NID), a public institute with skilled and motivated students, but with outdated facilities and new media programmes somewhat lacking in professionalism and Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, a private university with relatively modern infrastructures, similar to European schools and a more advanced programme which includes VR. Mech Mocha Game Studios is a startup and a leading studio in the Google Play store with a young, dynamic team developing local content that includes hindi in the menu by making a comprehensible UX for Indians and working with iconic Bollywood celebrities to which people identify. Also, Indian developers are world champions at optimizing application size, only 1% of the Californian Indian population owns a console and iPhone vs. the 200 million from the middle-class named Hinglish which is Mecha’s main target.

A whole VR section was inaugurated at NDGDC this year. We met studios and associations while testing India’s latest VR content of varying quality, but with good surprises, lots of motivation and creativity. Special Thanks to Navya Shivaprakash, Amélie Bui and the team for the flawless organization.

5 - 7 OCTOBER 2016 OCULUS CONNECT 3 Oculus Connect was a much awaited event for all VR professionals despite a difficult year for the group with supply chain problems at launch, the touch controllers not ready and tough competition with Vive. Oculus remains a very important player and it’s with the DK2/ DK1 that the new generation of developers has started working for VR. For this edition, the event moved from a 5 star hotel on Hollywood boulevard to a more standard convention centre, at the heart of the Silicon Valley in San Jose. A return to sources, a will to enlighten humanity, the reasons may vary, in any case, such was the choice of the Facebook team. The presence of Facebook, is what needs to be noted, the brand previously absent from print was omnipresent. By the way, the greatest absentee from the event was Palmer Lucky, a big sign of change for the Oculus brand or, perhaps, a need for discretion after the visible tension regarding Palmer’s support for the republican candidate Trump. From the innovation side, it was behind the previous edition as it hadn’t come close to the novelties of 2015 which were Oculus Touch, Bolot Train, Toybox, Henry, a Gear VR Café rich in unreleased content. This year, the only novelty was a synchronized VR cinema. Two experiences with which we were particularly pleased with : the game Super Hot from SuperHot Studio studios and the Hikari project from Japanese studios Scarnex.

What is particularly important to remember from the event is the long intervention of Mark Zuckerberg. His live demonstration on the stage laid the foundations of Facebook’s vision for the future of social life in VR and opens up a field of possibilities until a powerful ecosystem will be open to all developers. The announcement about the future wireless helmet from Oculus is still a bit too good to be true, but Zuckerberg simply confirms that the future is wireless for sure. Different talks have livened up the event, from the most common questions on VR storytelling to investment questions and more technical talks, very important for VR and for sharing with the community, the best practices learned from the Oculus lab research. Particularly, the John Carmack marathon at the 4.30 session, which was passionate but confidential. John Carmack criticized and analyzed participants’ Gear VR projects but without any video feedback of what was happening in the helmet for listeners in the room. We must also retain Oculus’s investment in content, $ 250 million has been promised and it was announced that the same amount will be granted, which was confirmed by Oculus’s strategy to invest heavily on the subsidy of premium content exclusive to its store, at least for the launch. The programme ‘‘ Oculus for Good ’’, which forms the involvement of Oculus in fields far from the VR games.

7 - 9 OCTOBER 2016 THE FUTURE OF STORYTELLING The FOST summit has been held for three years under the direction of Charles Melchor in NYC. This year, two Swiss projects were shown : Break a Leg by Apelab and Birdy by Somniac. The festival took place in a gutted museum in East Harlem in NYC. We were particularly touched by the excellent stage work realized by the Fost Fest teams. With lots of meticulous details and artistic brilliance, the festival was a huge scenographic success, inviting visitors to stroll among the masterpieces of VR and new media. We have tested a mind-blowing stop motion film « Oh my God ! », oscar worthy for its 360 video quality and we have found 2 projects selected at Crans-Montana Notes on Blindness and I Philip. The talks and workshops were organized all over NYC.

3 - 6 NOVEMBER EUROPE VR DAYS In late autumn, World VR Forum attended the Dutch VR Days, initiated by Benjamin de Wit and Daan Chicken, in Amsterdam and Utrecht. The venues were transformed into a virtual reality playground for four full days. The Dutch VR Days kicked-off with a professional conference, a full day of inspirational keynotes by industry leaders and leading developers who gave us more insight into the relevance of virtual reality in their respective fields and how early-stage consumer VR is already impacting industries. The Dutch VR Days in Amsterdam was a ‘‘ historic landmark ’’ : the first large-scale VR event in the Netherlands in 25 years.

books

WVRF also releases academic publications for the advancement of Virtual Reality (by Professor Philippe Fuchs. This latest publication from Professor Philippe Fuchs is the ultimate guide on best practices for designing VR. An uncompromised toolbox for hardware, software developers, storytellers and VR enthusiasts.

short summary

Philippe FUCHS, PhD, Professor in Mines ParisTech engineering school (Paris) is the leader of ‘‘ Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality ‘‘ team. He was the president of Virtual Reality French Association (AFRV). The field of his research is the theoretical approach of VR and industrial applications. The VR&AR team’s lines of research focus mainly on human ‘‘ behavioral interfacing ‘‘ in a virtual (or mixed real/vitual) world, by making judicious use of a person’s natural behavior on sensory motor and mental levels.

Our methodology for designing a VR system has been extended on the technical and psychological levels thanks to collaboration undertaken this year with ergonomists and psychologists. The solutions produced have been tested in several applications. He is the author and coordinator of 7 books, 13 chapters of other books, 28 articles of international journals, 56 articles in international congress with selection committee review and 28 other articles.
