Police Advice South Australians enjoy a very safe environment but locals and tourists alike can play their part in reducing crime. When touring for example, close your vehicle windows and conceal all valuables including your purse, handbag, shopping, phone or laptop. When parking, lock your doors and don’t leave keys where they can be found. If you notice anything unusual or anyone acting suspiciously

Keep South Australia Phylloxera Free South Australia is the only Australian state to have avoided an outbreak of phylloxera, a plant lice that destroys grapevines. If you’ve been driving or walking in an interstate vineyard, please thoroughly clean your car and shoes before entering South Australia. Please obtain permission before entering a vineyard.
Keep South Australia Fruit Fly Free South Australia is the only mainland state without a permanent population of Fruit Fly and we aim to keep it that way! Please don’t bring fruit or vegetables into our state. Use the dumping bins and signs around the state to prevent being penalised.

BEGINNINGS The Limestone Coast’s well-preserved ancient landscape provides precious windows into the past, enabling visitors to travel back in time over thousands of years…
Why Limestone? For more than 25 million years, the area now known as the Limestone Coast consisted of a series of ancient coastlines submerged beneath the Southern Ocean. During this period, tonnes of marine crustaceans and shells fell to the sea floor and cemented together to form the soft, white porous rock known as limestone. When the sea retreated about one million years ago, nature’s chemistry blended the remaining sand dunes and limestone deposits to produce a labyrinth of caves and sinkholes, along with the world renowned soils which are credited with the success of the region’s wine and agricultural industries.
Ancient Sites With six sites of international significance and 14 of national significance, the region also forms part of Australia’s most extensive volcanic province, the Kanawinka Geopark. The surprising journey through this amazing landscape takes in some of the region’s
8
most well-known features, including Mount Gambier’s Blue Lake and Mount Schank. Visit www.kanawinkageopark.com for more information or call into one of the region’s many Visitor Information Centres. To delve into the ancient history of Australia’s animal life, visit the World Heritage Fossil Site Naracoorte Caves. The park is the only site on earth that preserves a continous fossil record of the past 500,000 years.
The People The history of the Limestone Coast stretches back thousands of years. It is recorded in the rich oral histories of the Ngarrindjeri people, and reflected in a network of traditional indigenous sites located throughout the region. The first white settlers did not arrive in the Limestone Coast until after 1840. They promptly took advantage of the fertile country and ideal climate by establishing vast pastoral holdings and stations, followed by communities and townships.
Museums throughout the Limestone Coast tell the story of this fascinating past.
Saints and Scribes St Mary of the Cross MacKillop remains arguably the region’s most famous resident, and her tremendous impact on the lives of people in the Limestone Coast continues to this day. Inspired by Father Julian Tenison Woods, Mary opened the first Saint Joseph’s School in an old stable in Penola, which later fostered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The fascinating history of this woman who became Australia’s first Saint on October 17th, 2010 can be discovered at the Mary MacKillop Interpretative Centre, Penola. The Limestone Coast has also provided inspiration for a number of well-known writers including lyric poet John Shaw Neilson and balladeer Adam Lindsay Gordon, the only Australian to be interred in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. Their works remain popular to this day, and provide an extraordinary insight into early Limestone Coast life.

KANAWINKA GLOBAL GEOPARK In the southern area of the Limestone Coast region drive through Australia’s only Global Geopark.
What is a Geopark? A territory encompassing one or more sites of scientific importance, not only for geological reasons but also by virtue of its archaeological, ecological or cultural value. Sites of significance provide a basis for tourism, education and sustainable use of resources through existing land conservation laws and are key components of a Geopark, which are conserved for the generations of today and the future. The Kanawinka Geopark is Australia’s most extensive volcanic province, and has been recognised as one of the most significant and largest provinces in the world. The Geopark stretches across two states and is made up of four main precincts, Craters & Limestone, Coast & Caves, Cones & Falls and Lakes & Wetlands. The Kanawinka Geopark takes you through a trail of volcanic cave systems, off-shore volcanic islands, remains of coastal volcanoes and extensive systems of craters, lakes and wetlands.
10
Craters & Limestone Precinct – Limestone Coast, South Australia This precinct takes in three major sites, Mount Gambier’s Craters Lakes Complex, Mount Schank and the Mount Burr Range.
Coast & Caves Precinct – Victoria The islands and coastal formations in the vicinity of Portland are the main volcanic features of this precinct, key sites are Lady Percy Island, Cape Nelson, Cape Bridgewater and Cape Sir William Grant.
Lakes & Wetlands Precinct – Victoria The precinct encompasses the eastern section of the volcanic region and contains a good proportion of the more significant volcanic features, as well as the vast majority of the regions water bodies formed by volcanic activity. Further information, maps and fact sheets on the Kanawinka Geopark are available at www.kanawinkageopark.com or Phone 1800 087 187 or 1800 807 056.
Cones & Falls Precinct – Victoria Features include a series of volcanic systems that link a number of major cones with the ocean via extensive lava flows.
On Sunday 22 June, 2008 at the 3rd UNESCO International Conference on Geoparks in Osnabruck, Germany, the South West Victoria and South East South Australia region known as Kanawinka Geopark became the 57th member of the Global Network of National Geoparks assisted by UNESCO.

KANAWINKA – WORLD HERITAGE
WORLD HERITAGE The World Heritage list features sites located across the planet that are deemed to be of outstanding universal value. The World Heritage Fossil Site at the Naracoorte Caves is one such place...
As of 2009, 911 sites have been named on the World Heritage list, including 704 cultural, 180 natural and 27 mixed sites. Some of the more well-known sites include the Taj Mahal in India, Westminster Abbey in England, and The Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park in the United States. Australia has 18 World Heritage sites, including the largest site in the world, the Great Barrier Reef. Other popular sites for visitors include the Wet Tropics in Queensland, Uluru and Kakadu in the Northern Territory, and the Tasmanian Wilderness which has been listed for both natural and cultural values. Naracoorte Caves National Park also sits on this illustrious list, and while its outstanding universal values are not as obvious as some sites, it’s because they are hidden deep within the caves...
Why is the Naracoorte Caves on the World Heritage List? The Naracoorte Caves National Park is the only site on Earth that preserves a continuous fossil record of the past 500,000 years. Its incredible scientific value lies in the fact it has more than 100 fossil sites spanning this time period within the Park’s 26 caves. This makes the Park particularly interesting for scientists, as it was a time of dramatic climate change and covers the arrival of human populations to Australia.
Fossils and World Heritage Naracoorte Caves National Park is a World Heritage site for two reasons. It was jointly nominated with Riversleigh, Queensland with the two sites forming the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Riversleigh/ Naracoorte) World Heritage Area. The two sites are more than 2000 kilometres apart and each contributes to the overall story of the evolution of Australian animals.
Riversleigh’s story begins about 25 million years ago while the fossils in the Naracoorte Caves document the last 500,000 years of Earth history. The Australian Fossil Mammal Sites are also the first sites listed purely for their fossil values. Other sites have previously been listed and included fossils in their nomination, but these sites are the first for fossils only. To 2010, just 10 sites are on the World Heritage list for their fossils, each recording a period of Earth history.
How is a site selected for World Heritage? The nomination is reviewed by international experts and an on site assessment is completed. A recommendation is put forward to the World Heritage Committee, which makes the final decision on whether a site is listed. This process can take many years. For the Naracoorte Caves National Park, the original nomination was written in 1986 with the site eventually listed in December 1994.

WATER Water may be the essence of life, but it’s also the backbone of our being, and the basis of boundless Limestone Coast attractions…
The Coast The Limestone Coast’s rugged cliffs and sandy shores stretch the full length of the 46,745 hectare Coorong National Park to South Australia’s border with Victoria, linking seaside towns full of character and fresh sea breezes. From the provincial playground of Robe to the wine hub of Cape Jaffa and cray fishing capital Port MacDonnell, an eclectic mix of outdoors, art, history, and culture will captivate.
Fishing The Limestone Coast offers superb fishing from boats, beaches, jetties and rocky outcrops. The region is one of the world’s crayfish capitals, with rocky underwater ledges proving the perfect haven for the prized rock lobster. Each season from November through to late April, commercial fishing vessels head out daily to haul in their pots and deliver their catch safely to shore, ready for export around the world.
12
Visitors can also try their hand at cray fishing by diving, snorkelling or using cray pots obtained with a recreational licence. Shellfish isn’t the only seafood on the menu in these south eastern waters, with the Limestone Coast rapidly developing a reputation for its deep sea fishing. Anglers travel from all parts of Australia to experience the thrill of ‘chasing’ blue fin tuna and albacore, with a variety of fish including snapper, gummy shark, terakihi and other reef-dwelling delicacies found in shallower waters. The Glenelg River is one of the best spots for mulloway, particularly in the lagoons, with amateur fishing licences available from many service stations, tackle outlets and some Visitor Information Centres. Southend offers first-class surf and rock fishing, Lake Albert has ample supplies of European Carp, while Coorong Mullet is commonly found in the upper reaches of the Coorong. The region has excellent boat launching facilities and jetties, with several seaside towns also offering fishing charters. Visitors are reminded that bag and boat limits are enforced in South Australia... take only what you are going to eat, and leave the other fish for another day.
The Coorong One of Australia’s most fragile ecosystems, featuring a spectacular tapestry of coastline, scrubland, lakes and lagoons, this wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention of 1975 stretches from the mouth of the Murray River to just north of Kingston S.E. Shallow lagoons and waterways are home to hundreds of species of plants, birds and native wildlife, with the picturesque inland sea proving a fisherman’s delight. Canoeing and yachting are also popular, and the secluded beaches with their rocky limestone outcrops provide plenty of opportunities for camping, picnics and walking.
Glenelg River The Glenelg River, which we share with Western Victoria, is the only navigable river in the Limestone Coast. It’s a great place for boating, fishing, waterskiing, walking and camping.
WATER
Down Under
The Blue Lake
When you consider that the next stop is Antarctica, it’s not surprising to learn that the Limestone Coast forms part of the Shipwreck Coast, with the treacherous Southern Ocean laying claim to 70 vessels since the early 1880s. Divers from around the globe flock to the region for a rare glimpse of the watery graves beneath the waves. Dive iconic wrecks such as The Admella, The Geltwood and The Margaret Brock. However there are just as many attractions inland, with the Limestone Coast home to a labyrinth of more than 600 caves and 30 water-filled sinkholes.
Located within one of three craters of an extinct volcano, the Blue Lake serves as Mount Gambier’s water supply. Each November it starts its colour change from a winter blue to a magnificent shade of turquoise, and while the lake is an attraction in its own right, the entire crater lakes area offers a range of holiday and recreational experiences, with walking and mountain bike trails, picnic and BBQ facilities, an adventure playground and 18 hole golf links. To truly experience the Blue Lake take an Aquifer Tour down to the surface of the lake.
Industry
Beaches
If you follow your senses beyond the lush, green pastures of the Limestone Coast, the crisp, salt air and the thundering sound of the Southern Ocean beckons. Beneath it, the region’s lucrative cray fishing industry thrives, with an estimated annual net worth of $80 million. On dry land, water has helped characterise our world-renowned wines, while reliable rainfall and abundant underground water has ensured that the Limestone Coast’s agricultural industry is among the most prosperous in the nation.
Beaches in the Limestone Coast are clean and safe. Here are a selection of favourites from our locals: • Long Beach at Robe • Beachport • Port MacDonnell • Browns beach has some great surf, is clean and is easy to access.
12 different ways to experience water in the Limestone Coast • Take the Bowman Scenic Drive, especially spectacular in winter – Beachport • Explore the Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park • Launch a boat at one of the regions many boat ramps for great fishing • Go sailing on Lake Albert – Meningie • Visit the Cave Gardens in Mount Gambier during heavy rain to see the waterfall at its best • Discover the stories of 30 shipwrecks at Port MacDonnell’s Maritime Museum • Pack a picnic, park the car on Long Beach, Robe and go for a swim • Take a trip across the Murray River on the Jervois Ferry at Tailem Bend • Drive to Narrung and see the inland lighthouse at Point Malcolm • Explore the diverse lagoons of the Coorong, a wetland of international significance • Take an Aquifer Tour of the Blue Lake – Mount Gambier • Discover Nelson on the banks of the Glenelg River

Bool Lagoon Game Reserve
Dingley Dell Conservation Park
Bool Lagoon is one of South Australia’s largest and most diverse wetlands. Located just 18km south of Naracoorte, this semi-permanent freshwater lagoon is an important breeding area and drought refuge for waterbirds (including several rare and endangered species) as well as migratory birds, some flying from as far away as Siberia and Japan. To appreciate how vast these wetlands really are take a short drive to Big Hill. Boardwalks and bird hides provide fantastic vantage points to observe some of the 79 species of waterbirds recorded here (early autumn and spring are the best times to visit). Be on the look out for white and straw-necked ibis, magpie geese, whistling kites and black swans among the reeds. Camping facilities provide great opportunities to hear Bool Lagoon’s birdlife, frogs and other wetland wildlife come to life, especially at dusk and dawn. Recent years of drought have seen low water levels in the lagoon. To avoid disappointment, check current conditions by contacting the Naracoorte DENR Office.
The tranquil bushland surrounds of Dingley Dell Conservation Park was a source of inspiration for the colourful colonial poet and skilled horse person, Adam Lindsay Gordon. The cottage where Gordon once lived from 1864-1873 is now a museum showcasing his personal belongings and other mementos of the era. Guided tours are available by prior appointment. Phone (08) 8738 2221. Fees apply.

HEARTLAND After enjoying the sea breeze, travel inland where endless green paddocks and world famous vineyards lead the way to thriving townships.
Diversity The Limestone Coast is one of the most diverse regions in Australia, with visitors able to experience lush farmland, spectacular caves, captivating wilderness, and world famous vineyards only minutes apart. The inland route roughly begins in the aptly-named Tatiara, which is an Aboriginal word for “Good Country”, and the townships of Keith, Bordertown, Mundulla, Wolseley, Willalooka and Padthaway certainly live up to the district’s name. Majestic 300-year-old red gums characterise the landscape, and lead all the way inland to the thriving pastoral township of Naracoorte. The township itself boasts a vibrant rural economy renowned for its Scottish heritage and historic buildings, and comfortably blends the past with the present. Not only is it central to a number of Australia’s most famous premium wine-producing regions, but the nearby Naracoorte World Heritage Fossil Site is a destination in itself. At the very heart of the Limestone Coast, the township of Lucindale is home to the famous South East Field Days, which showcase all the good things the Limestone Coast has to offer.
Heading further south beyond the tall pine plantations, Millicent is not only an important business centre, but home to a unique range of visitor experiences including the award-winning Living History Museum and Millicent Art Gallery. The town is also the hub of the pine industry, with surrounding pine forests stretching to the nearby townships of Tantanoola, Nangwarry and Mount Burr. Further inland, Penola has gained prominence for famous forebears such as poet John Shaw Neilson and blessed Mary Mackillop, along with its proximity to nearby Coonawarra. Strong efforts to conserve local buildings has ensured that the town retains it’s rich heritage, with Petticoat Lane providing a rare snapshot of the past. There are plenty of golf courses throughout the Limestone Coast, many rated in Australia’s Top 100. Coastal links to rural country courses lined with majestic trees are sure to challenge. Keep an eye out for some of the resident wildlife.

WINE As winemaking folklore says ‘great wines are made in the vineyard’.
The Limestone Coast is home to a number of premier wine-producing regions from Padthaway to the north, Mount Benson and Robe on the north-west coast, Coonawarra and Wrattonbully in the centre and Mount Gambier to the south. All are within easy reach and en route to some of the regions major attractions. The Limestone Coast’s burgeoning wine industry was founded by John Riddoch in 1891, with the first planting of grape vines in the now internationally recognised Coonawarra wine region more than a century ago. The first vintage was produced in 1896 with the first operational winery up and running a year later. This winery is now known as Wynns Coonawarra Estate, and is arguably the most recognisable winery in the region. The secret to the regions’ success lies in the unique geological and climatic characteristics that have shaped the region. A combination of quality underground water, combined with some of Australia’s most fertile soils has given winemakers the right ingredients to work with, and the result is a range of red and white wines that are saluted all over the world.
26
This is complimented by a moderate maritime climate which is well suited to grape growing. Cool, slow ripening conditions produce intensely flavoured grapes with unique and complex qualities, ideal for the production of premium wines. A visit to the source of such exceptional wine is a must and a visit to the regions many cellar doors is a great way to experience the region’s passion for crafting fine wine. A mix of familyowned, boutique and brand name wineries, each cellar door has its own unique flavours, stunning architecture and captivating stories. Whether you are a newcomer to wine, an aficionado, or just one of our well loved regulars, the Limestone Coast offers an authentic and relaxed experience where you will be warmly welcomed and able to taste an extensive range of wine styles and varieties. While Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship of the region, the vineyards along the coast are fast gaining a reputation for zesty Sauvignon Blancs. The wines available in the region are as diverse as the range of cellar doors, so spend a few hours, a day or the whole weekend exploring the many cellar doors.
More than 40 cellar doors dot the region and can be found in Coonawarra, Mount Benson, Padthaway, Robe, Mount Gambier and Penola.
Coonawarra Coonawarra has long been recognised as one of Australia’s premium red wine producing regions, and is the jewel in the crown when it comes to the Limestone Coast. Wine critics’ superlatives, the trophies, the medals, the wine lists and shelf space dedicated to Coonawarra wine is testament to its
Cellar Door Tips • Pick a cellar door that you find interesting • Take some time to learn about and enjoy the wine you are tasting. Tasting notes are available to read and water is available to drink between tastings • It is OK to not like a wine that you have tasted • Don’t worry too much about the flowery words, after all it’s your opinion that counts • Designate a driver so that everyone gets home safely (and yes, you can spit) • Staff at cellar doors welcome novices and experts alike. Why not take the plunge, pick one of our cellar doors and begin your wine experience?
WINE
pre-eminence. Internationally famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and increasingly its Shiraz, Coonawarra wines are recognised for their character, elegance, strength, colour and richness in flavour. Despite being labelled Australia’s ‘other red centre’ the region also produces small amounts of Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc to great acclaim. Measuring only 20 kilometres in length and two kilometres in diameter, this cigar-shaped strip of prized ‘terra rossa’ soil is home to more than 24 cellar doors. All are within close proximity to each other and are well signposted, making it extremely easy to find your way around.

The Mount Benson wine region is nestled inbetween Robe and Kingston S.E. on the coast. The region benefits from a cool maritime climate strongly influenced by the Southern Ocean, and is already being acknowledged for its cool climate Cabernet, with Shiraz destined to become the icon for the region. If the region’s performance at wine shows and wine press reviews are any indication, Mount Benson is set to become an acclaimed premium wine producing region. The past year has seen awards and accolades for the zesty Sauvignon Blancs from this region, a ‘must’ to try on the cellar door list. Relatively new, the Mount Gambier wine region stretches from just south of Penola to the coast and from the Victorian border in the east to the volcanic uplands near Millicent to the west. Given the large area, there are a number of sub-regions, each with their own characteristic soils and aspect. The region now boasts twenty growers, with approximately 270 hectares under vine. The most widely planted varieties are the earlier maturing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc which are producing excellent wines in this cool, moderate climate. Visit www.mountgamberwines.com for more boutique wine labels.
Robe is an exciting, emerging wine region and since the first plantings in 1994 the region has seen rapid expansion and there are now in excess of 15 grape growers, with approximately 770 hectares under vine.
Padthaway Located 60 kilometres north of its famous cousin Coonawarra, Padthaway combines all the natural elements needed to make premium wine. The result, premium quality grapes filled with intensity and flavour that are producing outstanding, highly sought after red, white and sparkling wines. Often referred to as ‘Chardonnay Country’, Padthaway is noted for its classic Chardonnay and spicy Shiraz, producing wines of consistent quality. The region also produces award winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdelho.

Wrattonbully Nestled in between the wine districts of Coonawarra and Padthaway, Wrattonbully, like its neighbours is blessed with rich ‘terra rossa’ soil over limestone, optimum growing temperatures and a good water supply. The potential promised by this wine region is now being realised in wine quality, as vines start to mature and winemakers begin to understand the unique characteristics of Wrattonbully fruit. Wrattonbully is producing outstanding examples of Cabernet and Shiraz alongside Chardonnay of great character, and soft, rich, fruit driven Merlot with good power and flavour. Although there are no cellar doors in this region, Wrattonbully wines appear in most bottle shops and on numerous wine lists throughout the Limestone Coast.

ST MARY OF THE CROSS Mary MacKillop’s canonisation as Australia’s first saint provides international recognition of an outstanding Australian whose enduring legacy began in a Penola stable in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia.
Mary was born in Melbourne on 15 January 1842 to Highland Scottish parents, Flora and Alexander MacKillop. She first came to Penola in 1860 when, at the age of 18, she became governess to the children of her aunt and uncle, Margaret and Alexander Cameron, at Penola Station. As well as educating her wealthy cousins, she also taught the young daughter of a station worker and an Aboriginal woman to read and write.
32
The direction of Mary’s life changed when she met Penola-based Father Julian Tenison Woods, the priest and scientist whose 56,000 square kilometre parish encompassed what is now known as the Limestone Coast region. They discussed the desperate need to provide a good secular and Catholic education, initially for isolated and poor rural children, whose parents would only pay what they could afford. When Mary told Father Woods
that she wished to devote her life to God by helping the needy, the idea of co-founding a unique Australian order, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, was formed. However, the time was not yet right. Mary left Penola for Portland in 1862 to work as governess to another Cameron family and then as a teacher in the Catholic school, where she gained valuable practical experience. During this time she and Father
ST MARY OF THE CROSS
Woods, who was her spiritual director, kept their dream and her vocation alive by letter. In 1866 Mary returned to Penola with her sister Lexie to join their sister, Annie, who was already there to help with the children. The first St Joseph’s school was opened in a six-stalled stable renovated by their brother, John, and Mary began wearing the simple black dress that denoted her commitment as a Sister of St Joseph, although she had not yet taken formal vows.
Father Woods left Penola after ten years in the bush and in April 1867 took up his position in Adelaide as the first Director General of Catholic Education in Australia. A month later, not long after Mary and the children had settled into the new schoolhouse, he requested that she move to Adelaide where she and the early Sisters of St Joseph began teaching in the cathedral hall school. The Rule of religious life that Father Woods had written for the Sisters was approved
by Bishop Sheil and the co-founder and Superior General of the order, Sister Mary of the Cross MacKillop, took her vows. During Mary’s lifetime the Sisters of St Joseph opened schools throughout South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, New Zealand, Western Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. Today the Sisters continue their educational and social welfare work for the poor and the marginalised in Australia, New Zealand, East Timor, Peru, Brazil, Ireland and Scotland. FAMILIES A place for the young - and the young at heart - to rediscover their sense of adventure…
Create countless wonderful family memories in the heart of the Limestone Coast. With safe swimming beaches, lakes and waterways for exploring and fishing, pre-historic fossils and caves to discover and plenty of unspoilt natural wonders and national parks to investigate, the region has plenty of activities for the young and young at heart. Our coastal and inland waterways provide superb aquatic opportunities, from fishing to kayaking, sailing and surfing. The region also boasts some of the best off-shore and cave diving in Australia – but be prepared: wetsuits are a must in these chilly waters and permits are required on all diving trips.
Or, for a change of pace, intriguing walking trails can be found in parks, reserves and individual townships such as walking trails in Tintinara, Bordertown and Keith which wind through these picturesque towns. It is a great place to stretch your legs. Enjoy interactive playgrounds and museums, feed possums by moonlight, and peek at resident fairy penguins. With widespread appeal – regardless of age or interests – The Limestone Coast is the perfect place to explore and excite!

BEACHPORT The appeal of Beachport stretches well beyond its rustic jetty, which happens to be one of the longest in Australia.
There is an air of sophistication about this typical seaside town, and a heady mix of Norfolk pines, pure aquamarine waters, beautiful white sands and sumptuous eating spots promotes a sense of relaxation. The town is an important port for the local crayfishing industry, and is popular with recreational anglers. Visitors can also soak up the spectacular views of the rugged coastline along the Bowman Scenic Drive, and experience the uniquely buoyant Pool of Siloam, which has a salt concentration seven times greater than the sea. Swimming, boating, walking trails, interesting historic sites and nearby Canunda National Park also ensure the perfect blend of scenic coastal splendour and opportunities for adventure.

Just south of Beachport, Southend originally known as Greytown, was the first seaport in the region… and South Australia’s first abandoned settlement. Ships may have preferred the safer and more sheltered waters of Robe, but with fantastic fishing and safe swimming beaches, the town wasn’t deserted for long. Beachport can be found at 10E on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

BORDERTOWN Bordertown is famous as the birthplace of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and more recently for the family of white kangaroos which are the only known colony in Australia.
Located on the Dukes Highway between Adelaide and Melbourne, Bordertown has been a service centre for travellers ever since the 1850s gold rush. Tolmer Park, which was the original camp site of Police Commissioner Alexander Tolmer, has a wonderful interpretive walk and unique public toilets located in original gaol cells. The nearby Poocher Swamp is a wetlands reserve set amongst magnificent centuries old red gums, and is great for picnicking and yabbying. While ideal as a stopover point, Bordertown also serves as a touring base for the surrounding Tatiara District, and is known as the southern gateway to Ngarkat and Big Desert National Parks.
A visit to Bordertown would not be complete without spending some time at the faithfully restored Clayton Farm. Experience farm life as it was more than a century ago when the original settlers, the Wiese family, first occupied this land and built the homestead in 1885. Check out the stables, chaff and silage sheds, the pigsties and the largest thatched roof woolshed in the southern hemisphere. The Recreation Lake has a walking trail, artworks depicting the District’s history, electric barbecues, shelter and toilet. Bordertown can be found at 5G on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

CAPE JAFFA & MOUNT BENSON Cafe Jaffa and Mount Benson are fast becoming another seaside destination for travellers bringing together the Limestone Coast’s best features... coastlines and wine.
Nestled on the southern tip of Lacepede Bay, Cape Jaffa now boasts a world class commercial, recreational and residential marina with excellent and safe recreational boat launching facilities all providing the ideal setting for a relaxed family holiday, with its unique northerly aspect ensuring protected sandy beaches and clean seas which are perfect for swimming, walking, diving and fishing.
A fleet of 20 crayboats call Cape Jaffa home, and are moored at the new Cape Jaffa Anchorage Commercial Marina. The village also has a caravan park, and general store.
A range of local produce, merchandise and tourist information is also available, along with a sheltered pavilion, playground, barbecue, toilet facilities and petanque courts.
While the lighthouse has since been relocated to the beachfront at Kingston, the lighthouse platform, which was attached to the reef with screwpiles, is still visible more than six kilometres out to sea.
Cape Jaffa can be found at 8D on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.
Wine is making a name for itself in this region, courtesy of nearby Mount Benson which is home to seven cellar doors and some prizewinning Cabernet, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc. The first planting of a commercial vineyard took place in 1989, and since then, the area has seen a strong growth in viticulture, wine production and wine tourism, with more than 600 hectares under vines, three wineries and seven cellar doors offering the best of the regions’ wines and hospitality. The historic Mount Benson Hall has been turned into the Mount Benson Wine and Tourism Centre. While still functioning as a hall, the building also serves as a cellar door for local label Cape Thomas Wines.

THE COORONG The Coorong is the scenic gateway to the Limestone Coast, and takes its name from the Aboriginal word ‘karangh’ meaning ‘narrow neck’. It is one of Australia’s most fragile ecosystems, with almost 47,000 hectares of enormous diversity and stunning scenery.
The shallow lagoons and waterways of the Coorong are home to more than 200 species of birds, including the world’s largest breeding colony of Australian Pelicans. The Coorong is also rich with hundreds of plant species, and is a sanctuary for native wildlife, with the picturesque inland sea proving a haven for the famous mullet, flounder and bream. Canoeing and yachting are also popular, and the secluded beaches with their rocky limestone outcrops provide plenty of opportunities for camping, picnics and fourwheel drive adventures.
42
While rich in natural beauty this national park is also steeped in history. With 6,000 years of habitation by the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people leaving a precious legacy which descendents are happy to share through a series of captivating walking trails and nature tours which unlock tales of flora, fauna and archaeological treasures.

KINGSTON S.E. Located at the heart of Lacepede Bay, Kingston combines unspoilt beauty with ultimate coastal living.
The home of the Big Lobster is not only the northern gateway to the Southern Ports cray fishing region, but a popular destination for recreational fishermen who can take advantage of the town’s world-class launching facility. Kingston is an ideal place for holidaymakers and safe beaches not only offer fantastic conditions for scuba diving, fishing, windsurfing and sailing, but attract regular sightings of sea lions, seals and dolphins.
Kingston is located close to many conservation and national parks including Ramsar listed wetlands and the Coorong National Park. The town has extensive recreational areas, walking tracks and sporting facilities and is home to the best fish and chip shops in the region, with one store named South Australia’s best fish and chip shop on two separate occasions – simply follow your nose and see why! The town also contains one of few analematic sundials in the world, and a museum containing a fascinating collection of artefacts and local heritage. Here you’ll learn the history of the Cape Jaffa lighthouse located on the foreshore adjacent to the caravan park. Previously situated out at sea on the treacherous Margaret Brock Reef, it was dismantled in the early 1970’s, and rebuilt in Kingston where it remains to this day. Regarded as a marine engineering feat, it was the only Australian offshore lighthouse which had quarters for a keeper. Nowadays, it is managed by the National Trust and open for inspection and tours during school holidays only. Kingston S.E. can be found at 7D on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

MENINGIE Nestled adjacent to the tranquil waters of Lake Albert, Meningie is known as the northern gateway to the Coorong.
The town was established as a staging post and service centre for surrounding graziers. Serviced by paddle steamers from Milang, this formed part of the original Adelaide to Melbourne route, with travellers following the coast to Kingston by stagecoach. Today, Meningie is the perfect spot to unwind. Fishing, boating, skiing, relaxing strolls along the foreshore and fabulous sunsets are just a handful of the treats awaiting visitors to this idyllic country town. A short walk to Meningie Hill Lookout gives unrestricted views over Lake Albert and the surrounding pastoral properties, while a Wetland Bird Sanctuary developed by the local school serves as a haven for many of the birds seen in the Coorong, and offers unrestricted viewing.
The Lake Albert Golf Club – Meningie has established a fine reputation for its manicured course. It’s a great way to see some beautiful bird life across its well watered fairways. The Meningie Cheese Factory Restaurant and Museum not only offers fine food, but provides a good insight into the area. Historical and present-day artifacts are on loan from local residents, with the museum showcasing the colourful lives of past and present town folk. Be sure to bring a healthy appetite – the famous Coorong Mullet served at local eateries is a must! Meningie can be found at 3C on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

MOUNT GAMBIER How many cities do you know that are built on the slopes of a dormant volcano?
Mount Gambier, the “Blue Lake City”, is South Australia’s second largest city. Located midway between Adelaide and Melbourne, it is set amidst a unique and ancient landscape of volcanic craters, lakes, caves, sinkholes, mysterious underground waterways and boasts two State Heritage areas – the Cave Gardens Reserve and Mount Gambier Crater Lakes Volcanic Complex. The Crater Lakes Complex comprises four craters - Blue Lake, Valley Lake, Brownes Lake and Leg of Mutton Lake - and is recognised as one of 6 sites of volcanic significance.
The Blue Lake is the city’s water supply, containing 30,000 million litres and average depths of 70 metres. It is world famous for its annual colour change from a steel grey in winter to a brilliant turquoise blue in summer. Spectacular views of the Blue Lake and panoramic views of the surrounding hinterland can be accessed from the various lookouts located on the 3.6km road and walking trail that circumnavigates the rim of the crater. Tours to near the surface of the Blue Lake via the pumping station and glass panelled lift operate from the Blue Lake Reception Centre. The Valley Lake, situated in the largest of the four craters, is popular all year round with visitors and locals alike. A well-fenced Adventure Playground and expansive recreational areas make this area ideal for family picnics and activities. The Wildlife Park and Boardwalk presents indigenous species of flora and fauna in an environment very similar to what would have originally been found in the area. With lookouts, nature walks and boardwalks on the Valley Lake, this area is a serene environment where families can spend hours having fun.

Umpherston Sinkhole was once a cave formed through the dissolution of the limestone. This sinkhole was created as a result of the roof of the chamber falling to the floor of the cave, creating the perfect environment for its ‘sunken garden’. Umpherston Sinkhole is open at all times, spectacular by day with its beautiful terraced gardens and exciting at night when the resident possums venture out to feed in the floodlit gardens. Tours of Engelbrecht Cave take you down into the two underground chambers, showcasing the unique water dissolution process where caves and sinkholes are formed and offers the opportunity to visit where cave divers dive beneath city streets. The Cave Gardens, situated in the centre of the city was the original source of water supply for the early settlers and is still a central meeting and picnic place renowned for its famous rose garden. Walk down into the cave and venture out onto the suspended viewing platform for a view of the Cave. Feature floodlighting provides for spectacular night time viewing. Boasting a wide range of accommodation types, extensive and modern shopping

precincts, a variety of restaurants, pubs and cafes, Mount Gambier can best be described as ‘the best of the city in the heart of the country’ and is the ideal base for your next visit to the Limestone Coast. NARACOORTE The picturesque township of Naracoorte is home to a vibrant and thriving rural economy boasting enormous community pride. The township of Naracoorte is renowned for its Scottish heritage and historic buildings, and comfortably blends the past with the present. Smith, Ormerod and Robertson Streets bustle with an eclectic range of restaurants, museums, galleries and retail outlets.
Bool Lagoon, approximately 25kms south of the town, is a seasonal wetland of international importance inhabited by up to 155 different species of birds. The number of birds is entirely dependant on climatic conditions.
For those keen to get back to nature, a five kilometre walking trail weaves from the town centre along the Naracoorte Creek.
Discover one of South Australia’s top small museums at The Sheep’s Back Museum, a lovingly created portrayal of the stories of the people and the wool industry in this region. Feel part of the picture and satisfy the senses as you step back in time and explore this frozen drama. Incorporated in The Sheep’s Back Museum is the Limestone Landscapes Exhibition which provides an overview of the people and the landscapes of the region. This exhibit provides a setting for the museum displays and fits together the jigsaw puzzles of the region, providing information on why things happen where they do throughout the Limestone Coast.
The Naracoorte Caves National Park is South Australia’s only World Heritage Fossil Site and a premier visitor attraction. The park boasts an extensive fossil record unrivalled in any cave system in the world. For the visitor there is a wide range of activities including guided tours through highly decorated caves and significant fossil sites. The Wonambi Fossil Centre presents an insight into the past with life size recreations of extinct mega fauna while the Bat Observation Centre and its infra red technology offers a unique view of the otherwise secret world of the southern bent-wing bat. Other activities include, adventure caving, a school educational program, and specialty tours such as the popular Fossil Kids holiday program. The visitor experience is further enhanced by well laid out picnic grounds, barbeque facilities and a licensed cafe.
Set against the backdrop of majestic red gums, the Wrattonbully Wine Region radiates from Naracoorte in a spectacular vista of vines, with its shallow terra rossa soil over limestone ridges producing grapes with irresistible flavour and intensity.
With a maximum travelling time of approximately 1.5 hours to any of the Limestone Coast’s many attractions, Naracoorte is the perfect place to base yourself while you explore our region. Naracoorte can be found at 8G on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

PADTHAWAY Padthaway is located 100 kilometres from Penola and is surrounded by farmland and vines.
Rows and rows of vineyards interspersed with majestic red gums thread through Padthaway, which is noted as a classic Chardonnay region, and is also responsible for some exciting full-flavoured spicy Shiraz. Seppelts established the first vineyard in the district in 1964, but today, thanks to a combination of Mediterranean climate, reliable rainfall and the famous terra rossa soil, Padthaway boasts around 3,500 hectares of vines. The fertile limestone plain is home to vineyards belonging to such renowned wineries as Angoves, Browns’ of Padthaway, Henry’s Drive, Mildara Blass, Morambro Creek, Orlando Wyndham, Padthaway Estate, Southcorp and Tatachilla. Cellar door tastings and sales are available at Henry’s Drive and the majestic Padthaway Estate, which was built in 1892 for Scottish pioneer, Robert Lawson and also offers luxury accommodation.
66
The Padthaway township features a small cluster of shops, along with a park, playground, skate park, and caravan park. The unique granite “Padthaway Marker” symbolises the region’s agricultural enterprises of livestock, grain, seeds, horticulture and vineyards, and is a fine example of the locally quarried green granite which is exported worldwide. Padthaway can be found at 6F on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

HENRY’S DRIVE VIGNERONS
Henry’s Drive Vignerons Named after the proprietor of the 19th century mail coach service that once ran through their property, Henry’s Drive Vignerons is the wine operation established by Kim Longbottom and her late husband Mark. During the nineteenth century establishment of the farming and wine industries of south eastern South Australia, only horse drawn coaches provided the transit of mail and passengers. The coach drivers reigned supreme on top of their coaches and won the respect and admiration of their passengers. The coach service proprietor in this part of the state was a certain Henry John Hill. His operation drove directly through a property, owned more recently by the Longbottom family. Today, Kim continues to build the business in honour of Mark; with fine winemaking and brands such as Henry’s Drive, Parson’s Flat, The Trial of John Montford, Dead Letter Office, The Postmistress, The Scarlet Letter, Pillar Box and Morse Code. These wines are testament to Kim and Mark’s dedication to crafting fine wines from Padthaway, one of Australia’s great wine growing regions.

PENOLA & COONAWARRA Penola’s cultural and artistic heritage blends beautifully with Coonawarra – Australia’s ‘other red centre’.
Penola combines cultural heritage with historic charm, yet also remains highly progressive thanks to an eclectic mix of cafes, galleries and boutique-style shops. Artists, winemakers, and other creative types fondly call this town home, but Penola is perhaps best known for its former residents. Poets John Shaw Neilson, Adam Lindsay Gordon and Will Ogilvie gained endless inspiration here, along with St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, who co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph with Father Julian Tenison Woods. Call into the John Riddoch Centre; incorporating the Local History Display and Research Room and the John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize Gallery. It also houses the fully accredited Visitor Information Centre. While there, be sure to collect your ‘Walk with History’ brochure and discover the historical sights, intriguing past and secrets of Penola, including the State Heritage Listed Petticoat Lane. Several minutes down the road, the world famous Coonawarra wine region pays homage to another forebear, Scottish pastoralist John Riddoch.
Taking its name from the Aboriginal word “honeysuckle”, Coonawarra’s famous strip of rich, red terra rossa soil sitting atop deep limestone beds has given rise to many of the nations finest drops, with a worldwide reputation for unique flavour and quality. Cabernet Sauvignon has become the region’s flagship drop, and Coonawarra has won more Jimmy Watson trophies for Australia’s best one-year-old red wine than any other wine region. Samples can be savoured at the many cellar doors – all within around 10 minutes’ drive of one another. Each contains its own captivating stories, stunning architecture, and irresistible flavours. Penola can be found at 10G and Coonawarra at 9G on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

PORT MACDONNELL Famously known as “Australia’s Southern Rock Lobster Capital”, Port MacDonnell, is steeped in maritime history and is a seafood and blue water fishing paradise.
‘The Bay’ as it is affectionately known is home to one of the largest Rock Lobster fishing fleets in the Southern Hemisphere, and is quickly establishing a reputation among keen anglers for its sport fishing, with record Tuna regularly caught in the icy waters. The craggy headlands of Cape Northumberland, SA’s most southern point, contains the foundations of the first lighthouse built on mainland South Australia along with spectacular rugged cliffs and natural rock formations - named Rhino, Frog, Captains Head and Camel. Cape Northumberland is also home to a captivating colony of fairy penguins. Located in the heart of the town, the Maritime Museum tells the story of Port MacDonnell’s historic trading port and how it became Australia’s Rock Lobster capital. It also exposes the treachery of the Southern Ocean detailing the numerous ships wrecked off this deceptive stretch of coast. The famous Ewens and Piccaninnie Ponds are only a short drive away and attract divers from all over the world. While nearby Mount Schank, Australia’s youngest dormant volcano, offers something a little different. Climb to the rim of the crater and take in the magnificent views, and if you’re feeling extra fit descend into the heart of the volcano.
76
Nearby ‘Dingley Dell’, once home to the famous 19th century poet, pioneer and horseman Adam Lindsay Gordon has been lovingly restored to give visitors a glimpse of what life was like in the 1860’s. Popular with tourists ‘Dingley Dell’ has been mentioned in the book “1015 things to see and do in Australia” by Bruce Elder. Easy to find, it is clearly signposted from a number of points around the town. You can see why this peaceful seaside town is quickly becoming one of SA’s tourist hot spots and a favourite destination for surfers, anglers, swimmers, hikers and cave divers. Be sure to visit during the Port MacDonnell Bayside Festival in January and Tuna and Sport Fish Tournament in May which have become popular annual events, drawing thousands to the town. Port MacDonnell can be found at 13G on the regional map located on the inside front cover of this guide.

ROBE Welcome to beautiful Robe… the place for seafood, wine, coastal walks and a feast of art and heritage.
The historic seaside resort of Robe lies at the southern end of Guichen Bay. Experience the charm and hospitality of this year-round holiday destination amid the stunning beaches and rugged cliffs, tranquil lakes and mountainous sand dunes. Laze on Long Beach or indulge in the distinctive local wines, fresh seafood and regional produce. Explore the diverse coast and encounter Robe’s seafaring past, its heritage buildings and their legends. Victoria Street, the main thoroughfare, features pubs, cafes, trendy homewares stores, galleries and clothing boutiques. While a range of museums, cottages and historic walking trails bring to life the local maritime culture. Robe is proud of its shipping history, and was originally one of the Limestone Coast’s largest ports. The Cape Dombey Obelisk was built in 1853 as a navigational guide to assist entry to the bay. However, not every mission was successful, with powerful storms claiming a number of vessels. The second floor of the Caledonian Inn is built from timber salvaged from the Koneng Willem II and Phaeton, two of the China Traders wrecked in strong winds in Guichen Bay.
Anglers will delight at the quality and choice of fishing locations. Rock fishing in Guichen Bay, surf fishing at Long Gully through to West Beach and Wrights Bay, and wharf fishing at Lake Butler Boat Haven Channel or off the new jetty. Nature lovers are also well catered for. Robe is surrounded by conservation parks and offers outstanding off-road experiences. Explore the many 4WD tracks through Little Dip Conservation Park, providing peace, solitude, and a truly Australian escape. Stick to the tracks to avoid damage to the sensitive coastal ecosystem, remembering to tread lightly. Along the bay you will find famous 10-kilometre Long Beach, a fantastic spot for swimming, surfing and long walks. Take some time and play a round of golf at the 14-hole Robe Public Golf Course or visit Lake Fellmongery for a picnic and variety of water sports including water-skiing, canoeing and sailing. Luxurious overnight escapes are a specialty at Robe but be tempted to stay another night and enjoy Robe’s unique heritage accommodation.
Must See & Do • Take the self-guided Heritage Walk through the town and see the quaint cottages and stately homes • See the Chinese Monument. Learn the history of the Chinese landings and the long walk to the Victorian goldfields • Visit Cape Dombey and take a photo of the famous obelisk • Explore the Interpretive Centre in the Visitor Information Centre and discover the maritime history of Robe at the Customs Museum • Eat fish & chips (and maybe lobster) with a view on the foreshore • Go off road in Little Dip Conservation Park • Go fishing! Ask the Visitor Information Centre for the best spots • Taste the wine – visit the cellar doors located in the Mount Benson and Robe Wine Regions • One for the kids – go swimming, snorkelling, skate boarding and cycling
