Sardinia Couples looking to get married in Paradise don’t need to travel to the ends of the earth to find their dream destination – the Italian island of Sardinia is just a two-hour flight away and is an idyllic setting for your special day

Huw’s view Founder, owner and hands-on Managing Director of Just Sardinia, Huw has spent many years in Sardinia. Since 1985 Huw has been involved with hotels in Sardinia, lived in Santa Teresa and has spent many successful family holidays at locations all over the island with his wife and 3 children. Since the year 2000, Huw has toured the length and breadth of Sardinia to personally choose hotels, villas, apartments and farm accommodation suitable for Just Sardinia to appeal to all tastes and budgets. Therefore Huw’s View is designed to give a personal opinion and any advice on each accommodation as a holiday destination after visiting it himself.

Climate Sardinia has a pleasant six-month summer, hot and dry from May to October, but often with a pleasant breeze due to its location in the centre of the Mediterranean. The winter months are mild with a good amount of sunshine, particularly in March and April when all the flowers are out and it can be hot during the daytime and cooler in the evenings.

Y

ou will fall in love at first sight with this sophisticated Italian island, whether you decide to exchange vows in Sardinia, in a pretty Town Hall or on the beach, or have a sublime honeymoon on this delightfully romantic island. Sardinia is a sparkling gem in the Mediterranean, just off the Italian coast. It’s close enough for you and your wedding guests to reach easily – there are direct flights from many UK airports – yet it’s reminiscent of a far away Caribbean island, with similar lush vegetation, white sands and sparkling azure blue sea. The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is charming and un-commercialised. It lies due west of mainland Italy and south of Corsica and Elba and with over 1000 miles of unspoilt coastline it is renowned for its beautiful beaches, translucent crystal sea and fascinating rock formations. Yet it has so much more to offer than simply a beach holiday – the island has an interesting history, wild mountainous interior, vibrant towns with local traditions, colourful festivals and warm and friendly people. The island attracts both the sophisticated jet set as well as families to the world-famous Costa Smerelda with its breathtaking scenery and exclusive hotels, and the unspoilt south coast with many deserted beaches and turquoise sea. However, for loved-up couples and newlyweds seeking the ultimate wedding and honeymoon destination it’s the perfect choice. They can relax by the pool, sip cocktails watching the sunset, enjoy a sumptuous Sardinian dinner and walk hand in hand on a deserted beach in the balmy evening air – bliss! Sardinia offers accommodation to suit all budgets, and delicious cuisine heavily influenced by Corsica and Italy accompanied by impressive local wines. The island has many great restaurants, pizzerias and bars and activities to keep everyone entertained.

Enjoy: water sports, cycling, golf, tennis and horse riding. Excursion opportunities are also plentiful – from boat trips and four-wheel drive safaris to trips to archaeology sites and Roman ruins.

Getting Married in Sardinia Couples getting married in Italy need to provide specific documents from their home country to certify their identity and prove there are no legal impediments to their marriage. They should allow plenty of time to organise documents, book a date with the Town Hall and venue and allow for everything to be verified and processed by their consulate in Italy. Under Italian law a wedding can only be official if it takes place in the Town Hall or a church. It is possible to have a wedding in a hotel or on the beach, but it is not legally binding – it can only be a ‘Symbolic Ceremony’ and bride and groom will still have to go to the Town Hall to sign the wedding register.

Travel & planning Tour operator Just Sardinia (www.justsardinia.co.uk) has teamed up with Weddings in Sardinia (www.weddingsinsardinia.com) to offer tailor-made wedding planning for dream weddings in Sardinia. Just Sardinia will co-ordinate all your wedding arrangements in association with Colleen Piras of Weddings in Sardinia, who is English but based locally in Alghero. Weddings in Sardinia are able to organise everything from the most intimate wedding that consists of just the bride and groom to a full fairytale white wedding to suit all tastes and budgets. Just Sardinia can book accommodation and advise on flights for both you and your guests and arrange a pre-wedding consultation with your wedding planner.

Amanda and Kenny marry in sunny Sardinia

4

W

ith her parents being Italian, it was a perfect choice for Amanda Rubertazzi, a Customer Administrator from Ayrshire in Scotland to marry in Sardinia. However, her Scottish fiancé, Kenny Steward, chose to pay homage to his heritage too by marrying in a Scottish kilt!

Finding ‘the one’ I met Kenny through his friend, who I worked with – he introduced us. It wasn’t quite love at first sight though! I was playing hard to get, but it didn’t take Kenny long to win me over...

The proposal He proposed at his parent’s house – he just brought out a beautiful diamond solitaire ring and popped the question. He didn’t go down on one knee though, as he had hurt his back and was worried he wouldn’t be able to get back up again! It wasn’t totally unexpected – I knew it was going to happen at some point, I just didn’t

know when exactly, so it was a surprise when it did happen

The planning We decided to get married abroad because my dad passed away a few years ago and I felt it would be too much of an emotional day to have the big traditional church wedding in the UK. So we decided to go abroad for a more intimate ceremony with just immediate family then have a big party when we got home. We decided on Sardinia because both my parents are Italian, so Italy was the obvious choice. Initially we were looking at Florence then Kenny suggested Sardinia, and neither of us had been here before so it was an ideal place. We used the services of a wedding planner, Colleen Piras, at Weddings in Sardinia. She was great and did everything for us, so our wedding was totally stress free – just a few emails and phone calls was all that we needed and she did the rest. We would definitely recommend her!

All our travel arrangements were done through Just Sardinia, who took care of all the details for us. Once again we can highly recommend them! Elaine at Just Sardinia gave us all the info we needed for accommodation for our families to stay and ensured that all our requirements were catered for. They even left us a bottle of bubbly in our hotel room, which went down a treat! Great service. We didn’t need to plan much before we went, as my parents are Italian. I am also registered as an Italian Citizen, therefore we had to apply for our wedding banns through the Italian Consulate, that was pretty much the only thing I had to do, and decide on our menu. Colleen did the rest.

...And the guests? We chose to get married abroad because we had a small wedding with our immediate family of ten in total, plus Kenny and I and our two-year-old son Luca. Our guests stayed at the Hotel Oasis. They all decided it would be a great opportunity to make holiday out of it, so they came out for a week and had a great time in the lead up to the wedding.

www.justsardinia.co.uk 5

Getting the look I wore a strapless ivory dress with sequins across the top and then the rest was plain, The top layer of the dress was chiffon material and at the back there were two flowers from which two long pieces of chiffon flowed, that just lay on top of the dress which I could tie in a bow at night. I bought it from Diane Honeyman in Ayr. I didn’t want a veil or a tiara so I just wore a diamante hairpiece, which held part of my hair together at the back. Simple but perfect for the day. I was not a traditional bride so I opted not to go for the ‘something old, something new’ etc, but I bought new jewellery, cream and diamante earrings and necklace. I had someone come to the hotel to do my hair and makeup, however I had trials three days before so I knew there would be no problems on the day.

Grooms and bridesmaids My groom wore a Royal Stewart Kilt! My 11-year-old niece Emma was bridesmaid and wore a champagne-coloured dress and our two-year-old son Luca was page boy and he wore the Royal Stewart Kilt like his dad.

Fine details We didn’t really theme the wedding, except for colour. I wanted everything in gold and cream, so the table decorations were this colour – I used gold table crystals to decorate the tables and cream place cards with gold butterflies, and I bought all the ladies a

6 www.justsardinia.co.uk

cream Spanish fan each, so they could cool themselves down in the heat. I had an artificial bouquet of cream and pale pink roses made at home and just took it with me in hand luggage. As for the cake, the hotel kindly gave us our cake as a gift and we chose a cream sponge filled with strawberries.

Photographic memories Our wedding photographs were taken by Francesco Ballone at Sudio 5 in Alghero. He also did the video. The photos were great – he made us feel very relaxed and didn’t have us posing too much, he just wanted to take natural shots as well. My favourite is a beautiful photo we had taken down on the rocks which just captures the setting perfectly.

The ceremony The wedding ceremony took place at Hotel Dei Pini in a beautiful setting on the lawn in the grounds of the hotel. The service lasted about 15 minutes – any longer and I think our families would have passed out in the heat! We were married by Colleen and her husband Santino from Weddings in Sardinia. Santino said the ceremony in Italian and Colleen translated in English! My mum gave me away – I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else!

The reception We had the reception at Hotel Dei Pini, a beautiful hotel in the outskirts of Alghero. Bianca, the manager and all her staff, gave us a first-class service, it couldn’t have

been better. The food was amazing. We had aperitifs after the ceremony, then buffet starters, which was everything from sandwiches, antipasto to pizza, fish, fruit. The main meal was ravioli pasta to start, then chicken with roasted vegetables, followed by pork and potatoes. Dessert was a chocolate nut ice cream followed by wedding cake and all the wine you could possibly drink. We didn’t have a first dance in Sardinia, our meal didn’t finish till 10pm so we just joined the other hotel guests in the bar for drinks. We didn’t have any other entertainment laid on either, but the hotel had their own entertainment and there was a singer in the bar, so we just stayed there the rest of the night with our families.

On budget? The hotel, photographer and wedding planner all cost around £4,000 plus accommodation and flights another £1,000! That was right on budget to what we had expected and accounted for ¬– there were no extra surprises, but it was wonderful value for money!

Honeymoon After the wedding we moved to Hotel Carlos V which was a beautiful five-star hotel. We just had four nights there but it was worth it. We told our guests before we booked that after the wedding we were having four days honeymoon alone, so they booked up with the intention of leaving just after the wedding. It worked out perfectly. ¢
