UNDERSTANDING OUR DIRECTORY

US Evaluations

PTA Milk Predicted ability of sire to transmit genetics for milk production. The pounds of milk produced by a bull’s daughters above contemporaries. The higher, the better.

PTA Fat and % This is the amount of fat a bull’s daughters are expected to produce above contemporaries. The higher, the better.

PTA Protein and % This is the amount of TRUE protein a bull’s daughters are expected to produce above contemporaries. The higher, the better.

Feed Efficiency - The Feed Efficiency Index takes into account the individual feed costs to produce an extra pound of milk, fat and protein while accounting for differences in maintenance costs, housing costs and calving weights that may be attributed to the size of the cow. Cows that produce high volumes of milk without requiring high volumes of feed are rewarded in this index. FE = (dollar value of milk produced) –(feed cost of extra milk) – (extra maintenance cost) The higher, the better.

Productive Life (PL) is the measurement of the number of months a cow is expected to stay in the milking herd. Higher is more favorable.

Somatic Cell Score (SCS) provides an indicator of mastitis in a bull’s daughters based on the direct measure of somatic cells in milk samples. Lower is better.

Fertility Index combines several reproductive components into one overall index: ability to conceive as a maiden heifer (HCR), ability to conceive as a lactating cow (CCR) and a cow’s overall ability to start cycling again, show heat, conceive, and maintain a pregnancy (DPR).

Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) indicates the pregnancy rate difference expected in lactating daughters of a bull. A higher value is preferred. eg: Mozaic (FR4120) = 4.4 DPR

Sire Conception Rate (SCR) is an evaluation of a sire’s semen fertility. A higher number is preferred.

Sire Calving Ease (SCE) measures the tendency of calves to be born more or less easily. Expressed as a percent of difficult births in first-calf heifers, the lower the value, the better.

Sire Gestation Length (SGL) the influence each service sire is expected to have on the number of days his mates carry their calves during their pregnancies. Negative numbers indicate a gestation length shorter than breed average.

Milking Speed (MS) speed of milking. Higher numbers mean faster milking speeds.

Udders (UDC) Feet & Legs (FLC) The higher number is better for all traits.

WELLNESS

Expressed as a breeding value with a mean of 100, typically ranging from 85-115. A value of 100 represents average expected disease risk. Higher values are more desirable. Selecting for a high STA can apply selection pressure for reduced risk of disease.

WT$ focuses on Mastitis, Lameness, Metritis, Retained Placenta, Displaced Abomasum and Ketosis (also includes economic value for polled). WT$ estimates the potential lifetime profit contribution of the wellness traits for an individual, A higher number is desired.

Economic Breeding Index (EBI)

EBI is a single figure profit index aimed at helping farmers identify the most profitable bulls and cows for breeding dairy herd replacements. It comprises of information on eight sub-indexes related to profitable milk production.

These are; (1) Milk Production, (2) Fertility, (3) Calving Performance, (4) Beef Carcass (5) Carbon, Cow Maintenance (6) Health, (7) Maintenance and (8) Management.

Economic values in the index are based on data collected from Irish Dairy Farms and the Dairy Industry. These values were last updated in November 2022. (ICBF, 2022)

Dairy Wellness Profit (DWP$)

Modern dairy farmers require low cost, revenue generating cows that maximise overall farm profits. Genetic selection tools such as Dairy Wellness Profit Index (DWP$®) help farmers create cows that will increase profitability, by taking breeding for healthy cows to a new level.

Developed by Zoetis, DWP$® utilizes data collected from millions of health records within U.S. commercial Holstein and Jersey herds.

The inclusion of the wellness traits in DWP$® more accurately predicts the additional profit the individual animal will generate during her lifetime and ensures more rapid genetic progress for the specified wellness traits. The higher the number, the higher the expected profitability.
