Australia Vs Fiji: Australia Rugby on the player's influence over Rennie's axing

Australia Rugby chairman Hamish McLennan has proved that the Wallabies players were not asked on the judgment to fire head coach Dave Rennie and substitute him with Eddie Jones. Rennie’s sacking was proclaimed Monday, following a week-long Wallabies training camp on the Gold Coast. The strange timing of the ruling has been called into question by many as the Rugby World Cup looms in just nine months.

The timing has now been explained as unscrupulous, with Eddie Jones available, a homecoming was organized. McLennan also showed that Australia Rugby had been in touch with Jones for well over a year. He’s the best coach in the world, McLennan told SEN 1170 Mornings. He’s an Aussie, he’s a classic Sydney sider and he knows Rugby and our aggressive dynamic.

He was totally on the radar, and we’ve been talking to him since November 2021. We were imagining hiring him from 2024 onwards and then we fell off our chairs when he got cut by the RFU Rugby Football Union. We had a poor Spring Tour and didn’t perform to our hopes, so we just thought we’d capture Eddie for RWC 2023. Give ourselves the best opportunity to win the Rugby World Cup in 2023. He’ll deliver results for us.

McLennan verified that if Jones was not cut by the RFU and therefore was not on the market, then Dave Rennie would still be the head coach of the Wallabies. McLennan indicated to Jones’ winning percentage

with England was associated with Rennie’s with Australia, citing the difference as a signal of Jones’ potential to reinvigorate the Australian Rugby team. Dave’s a very honorable guy but we all live by the display in everything we do in life.

Rennie broke his silence on the spot-on Wednesday, saying he was dissatisfied, but I leave knowing I had the full support of the playing group and the staff. The quote grew more than a few eyebrows as it indicates the decision was made entirely externally from the camp. We didn’t consult the players at all, McLennan confirmed. It was a decision made by the board as we administer and oversee the whole game. The board knew it was the right thing to do and it was a unanimous decision of the board to hire Eddie.

Some players are very unsettled while some players are up for it. There will be change and there’ll be continued change with RA on the clerical side. Overall, it was the right thing to do and I’m comfy with the decision.

Australia Vs Fiji: The Fiji Rugby team Times Rebels to test Drua

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua team’s preseason trial match against the Melbourne Rebels at Prince Charles Park in Nadi this Saturday will indicate the team’s status ahead of the 2023 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition.

The Fijian Drua will face Moana Pasifika in the opening round of the competition at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand on February 25. Fijian Drua head coach Mick Byrne said it was exciting to have their academy boys in camp. Byrne said there were a couple of new faces in the squad.

“The weather hasn’t been kind to us from a rugby perspective, but I think we have done well around the grounds,” he said.

We have been looked after well by the International School which has been great. So, we have been able to get on the field and do some solid training. The players coming out of injuries are working hard and they have been doing extra work. They are back running and doing certain activities at training. This year’s Fijian Drua squad has been reinforced by gold medal-winning Olympian and Rugby 7s World Cup winner Iosefo Masi. He has joined the side after a short stint with the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League in Australia. Byrne said it was good to see the likes of Masi slot into the team.

“As a new guy he has come into the team, but all our good players have come back in good shape,” he said.

“Some of our young academy players have stepped up. It is pleasing for them to be training back home.

For our players to have the facility here and to get the work done I’m excited by where we are at this stage this season to where we were last season. The Fijian Drua established its home in Legalega, Nadi worth $2 million last October. Byrne said they would be using the preseason game plan scenarios against the Rebels during the trial game.

“With our preseason program we are focusing on ourselves,” he said. We don’t want to get too caught up in worrying about the opposition at this stage. This is because they probably will change things as we will. The big thing for us is that in this game we are going to bring to the Super Rugby Pacific competition. It is all the things we have been doing at training and all the systems we have been working on. We need to set all the processes in place so that when we play the opposition they don’t know what we are doing.

Early days to select from the Fijian Drua squad.

It is the early days for Flying Fijians coach Vern Cotter to select players from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua squad for national duties. The Fijian Drua enters its second season in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition intending to reach the elimination stages. Fijian Drua coach Mick Byrne told it was early for Cotter to scout players from his squad. Byrne said Cotter would probably be more interested when the players started competing for national spots.

“Because as we know with the training form and game day form performance is different,” Byrne said.

I think when we start playing games that are when Vern (Cotter) will be a lot more interested in how we are going on here toward our goal. It will give a greater indication of how we are playing. We have some existing national players in the squad. Hopefully, we have three or four of our new players who can put their hands up for selection. It is for Vern to see something in them, and they get a chance to go to the France Rugby World Cup 2023 Fiji is grouped with Wales, Australia Rugby World Cup Team, Georgia, and Portugal for the RWC from September 8 to October 28 in France.
