The new club making a play for Toulouse's England Rugby flanker Willis.
A new club has come into the fray in a major bid to sign England flanker Jack Willis, who presently plies his trade in France Rugby World Cup. The former Wasp has been a major success for Toulouse since signing for the French titans in the wake of the financial collapse of the Coventry-based Gallagher Premiership side. Maybe the most sought-after name as clubs far and wide fought over the corpse of the English club, Willis has rapidly become an important part of Ugo Mola’s Stade Toulousain team
Now Top 14 rivals Bordeaux Begles are in hot quest of the Englishman, with Midi Olympique informing that the west coast club has opened negotiations with the player. Bordeaux’s big-name signing ahead of next season has been France winger Damian Penaud from Clermont, but their other proven recruits to date have been a little more modest in desire Could Willis be their star-forward signing going into the next battle?
Given the extraordinary nature of his former club’s collapse, Willis is a selection option for Steve Borthwick and is indeed part of his England Rugby World Cup squad for the Guinness Six Nations. That door would almost surely lose if were to sign a new deal with a Top 14 side. Willis made his first XV unveiling for Wasps at Sale in November 2016 in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, with his Premiership bow coming later the same month also in opposition to the Sharks.
Willis has weakened serious knee and ankle injuries to appear as a destructive poacher in the Premiership. In 2020 he was elected Rugby Players’ Union player of the year following an outstanding season in which he has become English rugby’s most efficient breakdown operator. During spells recovering from serious knee and ankle injuries, Willis realized that he needed to plan for life beyond rugby union and so took up an evening sanitation course with his brother Tom at Warwickshire College Group.

Lafai was a late call-up to Matt Parish’s team and his strong acts continued with six tries in five games for his country, who he had not played for in over three years. Lafai asked The Sportsman about how Salford brought back his love for the game.
“The whole purpose of me coming over here was to find that passion and love for the match again,” he stated
Fortunately, I found the right squad that’s suited to the way I play and coach in Rowsley. I knew I had it in me, it's just getting that right environment which I did in Salford, so it’s been an entertaining season last year. The Red Devils were widely applauded for their thrilling style of play in the Super League in 2022 and Lafai tells that all the pieces came together for Salford to be the eye-catching squad they are.
I think it’s just having a good coach and system around you that helps. And having the right boys around you, which I feel they’ve done well with recruiting. Now you’re finding the right spine and the kind of style that we play, so that helped. Lafai was pleased with a fresh three-year contract by the club in December for his outstanding contributions last term and people believe the Red Devils can go even further in the Super League in 2023.
