Ireland Vs Scotland: RWC head coach's talents and training under the observation

Players and trainers who have worked with Ireland head trainer Andy Farrell have given a vision into his brilliant motivational and coaching abilities on media sport's rugby union daily podcast. The 47-year-old has navigated the Ireland Rugby World Cup side to become the number one graded team in the world and the group is two games away from winning a 2023 Six Nations Grand Slam.

Farrell enjoyed a notable rugby league profession with Wigan, before swapping to rugby union during the latter part of his playing profession. He began his training profession as an associate at Saracens, before becoming part of the England backroom set-up in 2012, being chosen as defence trainer with Ireland under Joe Schmidt in 2016 and then ensuing the New Zealander after the 2019 RWC.

Stuart Lancaster had Farrell as his defence trainer during his spell as England's head coach up to and together with the 2015 Rugby World Cup. As England coach, it was significant to have someone who could step in for you and had your back, explained Lancaster. You could tell he was a forerunner as a player and as a head trainer, you need a strong second voice in the changing room, that person who can take the burden off your shoulders a bit. Andy was pleased with that role for me.

I think he's a student of the game, of teams and training. A lot of big characters who have been great players don't have that desire and rely on their playing talent to translate into coaching ability and I don't think that Faz has done that. He has got lots of powers but I think his last strength is the breadth

and skill he has in lots of areas. It's not just defence it's attacked. It's the talent to manage people and he's got the presence and the nature to drive that.

Taking the Ireland Rugby World Cup team to the next stage

As a senior trainer at Leinster since 2016, Lancaster has sustained to work carefully with Farrell in his Ireland role and has seen the Irish team develop under his leadership to become a potent force in world rugby. Faz inherited very strong basics from Joe but it was changed, said Lancaster. It would have taken everyone time to adjust and change. The evolution of style takes longer at a global level. Andy has bounded himself with good people that you need when you graduate to the number one position. In a training team, you're looking for that blend of talents. He has employed the best in those areas and has been getting the best out of them, making them part of the side and creating a happy atmosphere. He has retained a contract with Ireland beyond Rugby World Cup 2023.

So he's still fresh and who knows what lies ahead for him after that? I can't see any aim why he wouldn't be a Lions trainer in 2025 but as global coaches, we know you are referred by your last result so he won't be getting too far ahead of himself. The Ireland players won't either as it's a very hard end to the Six Nations away to Scotland and home to England.

Ireland expected challenges in France Rugby World Cup 2023

The pool phases for the Rugby World Cup are fraught with difficulties with South Africa and Scotland also in Group B and the draw is loaded on the wrong side France or New Zealand are likely quarter-final rivals. Faz now has that group of performers who can really recognise the game and correctly take ownership. He is good at giving players shared possession and Ireland has that steadiness and reliability at a global level.

There's a solid base and depth in Ireland on every site, a real sense that they are all on the same page. That's praise to Andy finally, because he's the one who has to pull it together. Former England and Saracens wing Chris Ashton drew how Farrell blew his mind when he presented training reviews as part of game training and emphasises the care to detail of individual shows which sets him apart. We came in off training and he said we had to start revising training, said Ashton.

He may not have been the first to do that but he was the first for me. We skilled, then went back to sit in a room and guard what we'd just done. Now it's almost odd if you don't do it. Reviewing training helps you see what you were doing correctly and what you were doing wrong, to appreciate how and why, and the upgrading we saw was dramatic. What's so inspiring is how he has been able to acquire such deep sympathy for the game without playing it that much.

Andy Farrell works for the England Rugby World Cup team

A big thing on his side was how he could express and inspire people, and explain things so clearly. The number of people in the game able to do that is few and far between. Prop Alex Corbisiero played under Farrell as part of the England Rugby World Cup team and on the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia in 2013, in which the visitors won the Test series in a contest. The first team talks he gave with England vibrated with me, said Corbisiero.

Bringing him into the England fold when Lancaster did was an unbelievable experience. When he spoke he fascinated the room. We had a very inexpert 2012 Six Nations squad, but after his defensive talk you are trusting everything he has said, you have bound the pictures, the imagery, the tactics, but also the strength and the mindset. If you then put that in the situation of the Lions, when you put him in a room with a 'who's who of rugby', it was just an implausible experience.

He set the tone from the instant he spoke. He talks the talk and he walks the walk. You wanted to satisfy him and you wanted him to be proud of you. It was a powerful strength to have in your team the ways he could get men to follow him, believe and buy into what he was saying with just his arguments. Intensity, flexibility and his belief in getting others to follow. He's the perfect liberator of that intensity and he drives it through the week, almost like that General. Andy was always planned to be an RWC head coach

Someone who is encouraging you on, his hope and that 'buy-in', what he expects from you makes you raise your game. He's a man of belief, a strong-willed, opinionated man and he backs up what he says. His power was in the week, explaining what we desire to do, challenging us and driving standards. He was a powerful orator too, a powerful mixture. He was such a big force in everything we did that it was only a matter of time before he got a chance.

He was always intended to be a head trainer. Farrell exemplifies everything the Lions are about. I'd be surprised if every player going on that 2025 Lions tour to Australia didn't want him as the head trainer. Steve Borthwick is an implausible coach and England is in a good place in this cycle. But if I was at the RFU I'd be waiting for his deal to end to bring him back into the fold. It's England's loss where he is right now. He's building one of the top RWC sides, if not the best, teams in the world.
