Keith Richards wore this provocative t-shirt on the Stone’s 1975 tour of America, apparently mocking Mick Jagger’s intended film career. It has now become legendary! To this day, the ‘Who The Fuck’ T-shirt continues to be a bestseller. There isn’t a season that we don’t include it in our range & it is definitely a quintessential part of Worn By’s heritage.
David Bowie has been an icon of style for so long that he now serves as an icon for other style icons. His exhibition ‘David Bowie is’ at the V&A Gallery last Spring, immortalized him as a Warhol like figure. It showcased each persona that he has embodied & the careful study, planning & crafting that went into each incarnation. From the cat suits, shoes to the hair, nothing was left to chance. To us the most iconic Bowie persona was from his ‘Aladdin Sane’ days: paying homage to his lightening makeup, intergalactic prints & all things utterly fantastical.

Flame-haired, platform-booted. Trained in mime & cabaret, Bowie merged these disciplines into this particular persona. His alien’s rise & fall is charted on the eponymous album & he phased out this character towards the end of the decade.

Viewed by many as a character from his most productive period, Bowie described Aladdin as merely a development from his Ziggy Stardust character. Same red hair just slightly more nonsensical, this was Ziggy as a bona fide rock star.

Throughout the ‘90s, Bowie ran from his past. He swore off his catalogue in concert, embracing the emerging electronica music even touring with Nine Inch Nails, looking frightfully the follower rather than the usual leader.

Factory Records
Factory CMYK WBMT0545WHT Factory was born in 1978 in response to the rapidly growing music scene in Manchester. In keeping with punk’s DIY ethos, Tony Wilson, a local television presenter and music lover, threw his life savings into the company that he called “an experiment in art.”

Wilson recruited producer Martin Hannett and graphic designer Peter Saville to help release records by Joy Division who after the death of lead signer Ian Curtis, formed New Order. By the late Eighties, Factory was a multi-media empire comprising bars, shops, offices and the Hacienda nightclub. But even in its perceived heyday at the centre of the “Madchester” scene, the infrastructure was crumbling, the Hacienda had been hijacked by guns and gangs and the coffers were empty, leading to its inglorious collapse in 1992. 32 years after it began, the story of Factory remains both an inspiration and a cautionary tale.

Joy Division Japan WBMT0426BLK The dark and gloomy Joy Division were a Post Punk English rock band formed in Salford in 1976. The band rose to fame in 1980 with the posthumous release of the single ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart.’ The single was released following the tragic suicide of front-man Ian Curtis. After the release of their second album ‘Closer’ the remaining band members went on to form the equally influential band New Order.

The 1960s, tie-dye was brought to America through the hippie movement, a youth movement that advocated the sexual revolution, psychedelic rock and protested the Vietnam War. Hippies wanted a way to escape from the strict social norm of the 50s, and tie-dye was just one way of expressing their free-spirited nature. Before tie-dye became popular, Don Price, a brand marketer, began a marketing campaign for the dye in Greenwich Village, where many hippies lived. He went door to door, looking for artists who would use Rit dye for tie-dyeing. Then came Will and Eileen Richardson, two retired artists who made tie-dye pieces that Price showed to designers and fashion editors. After clothing designer Halston started using tie-dye in his designs, stars such as Janis Joplin were wearing it. Which popularised the technique & before long the entire youth generation jumped on the bandwagon.

Sonic Youth were an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1981. In their early career, Sonic Youth were associated with the No Wave art and music scene. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. They expressed a wide variety of influences, ranging from the influential protopunk musician Patti Smith to composer John Cage. The band has been praised for using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings, and preparing guitars with objects like drumsticks and screwdrivers to alter the instrument’s timbre.

Art rock band Roxy Music, fronted by Bryan Ferry, was highly influential in the more experimental elements of glam, the early UK punk sound, and new wave electronic 80s bands. Roxy Music carefully crafted their slick look as well as sophisticated sound, and had a distinct style across their stage shows, videos and album artwork. Cover artwork resembled fashion magazines and featured models such as Jerry Hall, who had a romance with Bryan Ferry during their collaboration. Their song “Love is the Drug” remains Roxy Music’s highestcharting single in the US, while in the UK it was topped only by their 1981 version of John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy”. It is one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped

Her final album ‘Pearl’ was released six weeks after her death and produced her only number one hit, ‘Me and Bobby McGee’. Her flamboyant style included coloured hair streaks and accessories such as scarves, beads and feathers. When in New York City, Joplin frequented Limbo on St. Marks Place, picking out vintage and other one-of-a-kind garments she wore on stage and off.

Like a lot of things that have been around for a few generations, it’s hard to imagine a time when LIFE didn’t exist. It was the first magazine of its kind, before its existence there was nothing else like it available to American readers.

LIFE has been the publication that has chronicled and provoked America ‘s passions, the publication said to bear the magazine world’s most world-famous logo & unlike most magazines that are built around the editors & writers, LIFE has been historically built around photographers. The magazine was also a pioneer when it came to telling stories in still images. LIFE, in effect, created the photo-essay.

The first slogan T-shirts were sold by Mr Freedom in the 60s, a shop on London’s Kings Road set up by Tommy Roberts and Trevor Myles. In the 70s, shock tactics prevailed: Vivienne Westwood and her partner Malcolm McLaren made political T-shirts to sell in their shop, SEX, and the most popular design featured a swastika and an inverted crucifix under the word “Destroy”. McLaren called it “the ultimate punk-rock T-shirt”.

In 1977 Nancy moved to London, allegedly to win over Johnny Rotten, but when he did not show interest in her, she pursued bassist Sid Vicious instead. Their style was as erratic as their relationship. Sid was always covered in studs, patches, holes and leopard print, Nancy at his side in fishnets and spiked cuffs and collars. Immortalised in intimate and outrageous photographs, this punk couples’ image is as infamous as their demise.
