MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Governors, At the end of this term we sadly say goodbye to the following members of staff. Seanin Friel, who has sadly not enjoyed good health, has decided to resign from our English Department. Glynis Jones our Senior Cover Supervisor leaves us having raised the profile and efficacy of the cover supervisor team. Her work will stand us in good stead as we go forward.

Melanie Aylward leaves the MFL department to take up an exciting post as Head of Spanish at The Bi-lingual Primary School in Brighton. Melanie has been an engaging and enthusiastic teacher, encouraging many of our younger students to take a foreign language at GCSE. Jacqui McHale leaves us for a challenging post at The Connected Hub in Brighton. Jacqui is not only a very good science teacher but offers excellent care and guidance to a range of students. Her exceptional skills will be greatly missed. And finally, we wish a very sad and fond farewell to Steve Jeffery as he takes up his post of Deputy Headteacher at

We are enormously proud of Steve for achieving this tremendous promotion and his loss to Worthing High will be felt for a long time to come. Joining the staff in January we welcome Michelle Swinbank who joins the DT Department as Subject Leader. I am grateful to all parents for their continued support of our drive to improve standards through ensuring correct uniform is worn and that students are fully equipped with pencil cases, calculators and maths sets. Madrigalia and Senior Singers at The Cloisters

Two Worthing High Students Win Child of Sussex Awards

On Friday 5th December, Worthing High’s Madrigalia and Senior Singers entertained senior citizens at The Cloisters, Carnegie Road, Worthing.

On Friday 31 October, two Worthing High students were recognised with awards at the prestigious Child of Sussex Awards . In their fourth year the 14 awards recognise amazing young people from all walks of life.

We have been developing a friendship with the residents at The Cloisters for a number of years now and thoroughly enjoy meeting together and entertaining through music. Students from all year groups joined the Christmas Afternoon Tea and provided a varied musical programme that included madrigals, part-songs and Christmas pieces from the Senior Singers. We also lead a traditional “sing-along” as well as collective singing of traditional carols. Festive readings were also performed.

Charlotte is 16 and since she was 11 years old she’s volunteered every week to help care for horses at the Ferring Country Centre where she also supports adults and children with learning difficulties. She supports a child that is in foster care, and has even raised money to fund a trip to India where she helped teach young children. She was described by her friend who nominated her as “the most selfless person I know”.

Mr Jeffery noticed a beautiful voice coming from one of the residents. Stan was not so sure about providing a solo in one of the carols but did agree to a duet with Mr Jeffery. Everyone was very impressed with his voice (Stan’s, not Mr Jeffery’s!) and Stan seemed to enjoy the adulation. Cloisters’ resident, Barbara Ridler sent this message: Thank so much for giving us such an enjoyable afternoon. A great start to our Christmas celebrations. Stan (with the lovely voice) said it was a joy to hear young people sing so beautifully and with such lovely harmony. Everyone said how much they enjoyed it. We do hope to see you in the future.

Mr Jeffery writes, “I was once again so very proud of our students. They sounded beautiful and performed with energy and commitment. Even after the performance was over, our young people took the time on a Friday afternoon to speak with residents and develop our relationship with the Cloisters. I was so impressed.”

PRESENTATION EVENING FOR 2014 LEAVERS

On Thursday 13 November students who left this summer returned to receive their examination certificates. Over 300 students, friends and family attended the event which commenced with a drinks reception. Our guests were welcomed with a performance from the school choir and a presentation of pictures of days gone by. Photos included pictures of their Intake Day day back in summer 2010. The key note speaker was 19 year old bronze medal winning Paralympian Olivia Breen who gave a fascinating and inspiring talk about the Palalympics and how it has changed her life. The annual Hyder-Wilson trophy for outstanding academic success was presented to Rachel Thomas.

of school provision that a parent might like to raise. In addition I am able to update parents on changes to subject syllabus, exam requirements and other government initiatives affecting education. Parents who have taken part in the two Learning Walks todate have raised some useful questions and points for improvement, these include: 1. Ensuring students’ work that is displayed always carries the name of the student.

2. Parents are informed when a student’s achievements are displayed on the Achievement board. Please do join me for the next walk on Thursday February 5th 2015 at 9.15am. Subsequent dates for this academic year are:-14th May 9th July, both start at 9.15am

TRIP TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD Students from Worthing High School visited Keble College, University of Oxford for the day. Keble was founded in the 1870s and the architect was William Butterfield who used striking polychromic brickwork in the Gothic style. The founding fathers had the idea of establishing a high church seminary. However, the first Warden, Edward Talbot had other ideas and encouraged the teaching of science and was sympathetic to the theory of evolution.

This was the second visit made by our students as part of the Oxford Pathways Programme and the theme was “investigating options” the idea being to help students plan their progress through Y11 and sixth form leading to “informed choices” at

ALEX BAKER: HEENE SUCCESS Alex Baker has been successful in gaining an award that provides him with individual violin lessons through the local Music Service. This means that Alex has worked very hard to achieve a high standard of playing and the music service would now like to invest in him and enable him to further develop his musicianship through this provision.

University. Students were given an introductory talk about selecting A levels following guidelines provided by the Russell Group. This was followed by a series of four lectures covering a range of disciplines from the ecology of tropical rain forests to the trial and punishment of witches in 17 century literature, the use of statistical analysis in determining randomness and finally the role of international relations in dealing with issues of national security. Lunch was taken in the Victorian Gothic dining hall surrounded by paintings of past Wardens and dignitaries of the College.

Alex said that they were both very encouraging but he was still nervous. They were of course very impressed with his playing and the school is thrilled that he now has this wonderful opportunity.

Phoebe Walker writes: This year’s trip to Oxford was, once again, extraordinary. Keble College is as enormous as it is beautiful and the students who came to talk to us were so passionate that it would have been impossible to have been board, even when they talked about statistics and the like. The dining hall was reminiscent of Hogwarts and their common room is described as the” space ship end”. Overall the diversity of the architecture, people and subjects made for an inspiring and interesting day. Dr P Klemenic Gited and Talented

We all wish him very well as he continues to develop his violin skills and general musicianship. Bravo! Steve Jeffery Music

Alex describes the experience as both interesting and challenging. He had to venture to the Music Service headquarters in Petworth where he was then auditioned by two professional musicians working at the service. 5

Fire Break

Louis Clark in year 9 was lucky enough to spend a week working in Shoreham Fire Station, as part of the Firebreak project run jointly by the Youth Service and West Sussex Fire Brigade. Louis, working with students from other local high schools, spent the week learning not only fire service drills and first aid skills but also a lot of personal skills ranging from team work to conquering personal fears they may have had with heights. The week culminated on Friday afternoon with a passing out parade. Arriving at the fire station in a Fire Engine with sirens and blue lights, the group showed parents, school staff and local officials, including the High Sheriff of West Sussex, all the drills and rescue procedures

they had learnt, using breathing apparatus, ladders and water hoses we watched how casualties would be rescued and treated from house fires and car accidents. Louis enjoyed the week very much and was awarded a certificate and medal for taking part. Well done Louis for representing Worthing High School.

Worthing High School for the first time held the Red Cross Babysitting Training Course, although only attended by 4 students. All girls attended the weekly session and have successfully completed the course. After a test covering all the areas taught over the 6 weeks the students will receive their certificates which can give future employers confidence in the ability of their babysitters. Due to the success of the course, I will be offering students the opportunity to take part starting after Christmas. Mrs Fillery

YEAR 9 TRIP TO THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM The whole of Year 9 visited the Natural History Museum to further their learning in Geography and History with the experience of being out of the classroom and visiting the museum and all it has to offer. X-band students visited on Thursday 11th December and Y-band went on 12th December. “We travelled to London by coach and spent the day at the Museum. It was a fun and informative experience and we were able to apply our learning from the last half term” explains Amy Alford. Amy also reported “ With regards to Geography, I particularly enjoyed the Red Zone because it was incredibly interactive and brought to life our learning in the class-room. There was an earthquake simulator which showed us how frightening the ef-fects and consequences would be in the situation. Also, there was an escalator that entered a visual representation of the earth’s internal structure. I enjoyed seeing how the earth is made up, and learning about the characteristics of the different layers.

With regards to History, I particularly enjoyed the Green Zone because it was inter-esting to see fossils from many different extinct species.“ Yasmin Jeffrey agreed “ it was very enjoyable and we saw incredible sights such as large models of the earth, dinosaurs and the creepy crawly centre”

Charlie Higson visited

Worthing High School in September and talked to our students along with students from: Downsbrook Middle School Chesswood Middle School St Andrew’s CE Boys High School Hove Park School Steyning Grammar School Shoreham Academy He spoke about his love for horror, his television career and his writing process. He told us how he came to be asked to write

the Young James Bond series, which being a James Bond fan he felt honoured to do, through to writing the Zombie Enemy series. He said how his children are his best critics and they would tell him if the plot was scary enough or not! Charlie was an inspiration to all the students

attending and this was evident in the amount of students who queued, for quite some time, to get their books signed.

MFL MIDDLE SCHOOL VISITS

HARLEQUINS DAY TRIP

In October this year, several Year 9 students and Subject Leader for Modern Foreign Languages, Miss Karonen, visited three different middle schools, to teach Year 6 and 7 classes a lesson of either French or German. During the visits, Year 9 students worked with small groups and even taught parts of the lesson themselves. Year 9 students had created some lesson activities which helped Year 6 and 7 students to learn more of the language. Overall, we visited three different schools (Thomas at Beckett, Broadwater C of E. and Downsbrook Middle) and taught six lessons, with all of them being an enjoyable learning experience for both Worthing High students and the middle school students alike.

The day started in the gym. Watching professional athlete’s workout is an eye opener. One of the players was chest pressing 150kg ten times. Another player was jumping onto a box which was shoulder height. He was doing so from a seated position.

Kailan Adams Year 9 TMAY

We moved on from the gym to meeting Kyle Sincler, a beast of a man. Kyle spoke to us about his upbringing. Only a few years ago he was involved with gangs. He hit a cross road in life and had a choice to go forward with rugby or spend the rest of his life in crime. He thanks his mother for guiding him into the right direction. The afternoon consisted of eating steak and salmon which was one of five player meals for the day. As well as chilling in the player lounge with the guys and out on the rugby field watching the lads in full flight training. The purpose of the visit was to help inspire Harry Clark. Harry has an incredible talent in his Rugby skills but his attitude and behaviour are letting him down. We wanted to show him what his future will look like if he makes the right decisions in school and in life.

Miss Karonen wants to thank Kailan Adams, Amy Alford, Lucy Brunning, Yasmin Jeffery, Christopher Sherman and Ryan Stimpson for all their help on the trips. You were excellent teachers and ambassadors to our school! 10

Harry has now been offered trials for Harlequins which he will be taking on Monday 15th December. Good Luck Harry!

WORTHING HIGH DOES STRICTLY COME DANCING On 23rd July 2014, Worthing High School staff donned their dancing shoes to take part in a Strictly Come Dancing spectacular! The whole school came to the sports hall to watch and the Drama department collected money for the upcoming production of The Sound of Music. Mr Jeffery and Mrs Fillery twisted their way round the floor while Mr Slaughter and Ms Dugova did a gorgeous merengue. Mr Carey and Mrs Jones dusted off their old dancing shoes – both have had a history of ballroom dancing and it showed in their excellent steps! Mr Janardo and Miss Aylward snaked some hot Latin moves and Mr Martin and Mrs Bolger kicked up a storm in a Charleston. This was all overseen by an esteemed panel of judges –

Mrs Dickinson, Mr Beda and our own dance experts Miss Strudwick and Ms Stevenson. The whole event was compared by Worthing’s answer to Bruce and Tess – Miss McCarthy and Mrs Hunwick. The whole event culminated in a nail biting, three way final between Mr Jeffery and Mrs Fillery; Mr Carey and Mrs Jones and Mr Janardo and Miss Aylward who all had to dance again. It was very close, but the pair to lift the trophy was Mr Janardo and Miss Aylward who were crowned

Worthing does Strictly champions 2014! The event was a huge success and enjoyed by all and the Drama department raised over £150 for the next show.

ART TRIP TO TATE AND THE NATIONAL GALLERY Art Trip to Tate Britain and the National Gallery Due to huge demand for places, the Art trip was buzzing with many excited students in a 5 seat wide coach, making it feel more like an aeroplane than a road vehicle. We made the journey into London to Tate Britain quickly, getting lucky with the traffic, luck that

where the students were given a tour of a few paintings on the theme of portraits, and encouraged to consider and discuss the subject and symbolism within the works. The gallery guides were persistent and encouraging, so by the end of the session most students had offered some comment or opinion to the group. The journey home did not run too smoothly, with several holdups on the road extending our journey, but again students coped with humour and maturity. It was a great day out with plenty to challenge our artists’ ideas and give them food for thought when it comes to the end of year exam.

At Tate Britain students were able to explore and discover art works by a huge range of British artists, taking photos and making sketches to support their current projects and the year 11 upcoming exam. We were impressed by their focus and maturity in the galleries. After lunch we took the coach to the National Gallery 12

same workshop in previous days. Worthing students were particularly lucky to be working on such an exciting project on the 11th November, Remembrance Day and 100 years from when the war started in 1914. This was masterminded by Jemima Kiss, a former student at WHS who now works as a journalist at the newspaper. She even took time out of her busy schedule to visit the students whilst at work and they were able to ask her questions about her career. The day was a day to see a newspaper at work as well as completing the project.

15 Year 9 History students visited the Guardian Newspaper offices on 11th November 2014 to experience the exciting opportunity of putting together a front page of the events of WW1. They have been studying the Great War this term in class so to have the opportunity to actually visit a leading newspaper to use their knowledge and the resources from the Guardian archives was amazing. Billy Hilton said he was not sure what to expect from the day and his response was that it turned out to be so good. All the students produced a full front page of stories and

photographs written by themselves but based on true accounts and these are now proudly on display at the school. Margaret Holborn, who led the session as Education Officer at the Guardian Newspaper, was so pleased with the results and revealed to the students their work was the best she had seen out of all the groups who had attended the
