Lewis is shooting for the top

As mentioned in the last newsletter, Lewis Strotten in 9BHN was invited to attend Great Britain trials in January. It is with immense pride we can announce that Lewis was successful in his trial and has been asked to join the 35 strong squad to shoot internationally this year. Lewis will feature in two international tournaments in the coming months and also take part in the English Small-bore Shooting Union Championships in May. As well as the competition element, Lewis will be subject to intense fitness testing, psychological training and general shooting preparation. Well done Lewis and best of luck! Mr. Gill

A day in the life of...Kai Maxted 8SRR I started playing tennis when I was 4 years old. I train at the West Worthing Tennis and Squash Club, and also the High Performance Centre in Brighton. My weekly schedule consists of both tennis coaching and strength & conditioning sessions, totalling over 14 hours per week. This includes lessons before, during and after school, as well as at the weekend. Sometimes I go to the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton for intensive 3-day national training camps. Luckily Worthing High School is very supportive and I am grateful to them for letting me take time out of school. I still have to work hard at my studies though, and often take work with me if I go away for training or tournaments. Competing in tournaments is an important part of my tennis development and I regularly play in regional, national and international events. I have competed abroad, in countries like France, Spain and Germany, which are tough tournaments because you are up against some of the best players in Europe. I also travel to different places in the UK and often have to stay in a hotel because the journey is so far. I am usually accompanied by my mum or dad, but sometimes I travel with a coach and a few other players. That’s normally quite fun because your parents aren’t around! I really enjoy tennis, although it’s hard work and can be stressful at times. My most memorable achievements to date include reaching the final of the British Junior Nationals and representing Great Britain in a ‘Davis Cup’-like event. I am currently ranked No.1 in Sussex and within the top 10 nationally for my age group (12 & Under). In April I will move up to the next age group, which is 14 and Under. This will be a tougher challenge because the players will be bigger and stronger, but I hope I can achieve some great results.

DANCE On Monday 4th March, thirteen girls from the Ricochet dance company performed at Worthing Pavilion as part of the Dance Time 2013 evening. The girls performed a contemporary dance called 'If in Doubt' which was based on the Japanese proverb of 'See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil'. The dancers all worked extremely hard both prior to the event and onstage. Well done to all dancers for an excellent performance. The girls will showcase this dance one last time at the Simply Dance Evening on Thursday 18th April at Worthing Pavilion, so come along to experience it!

Gifted and Talented Dance Collaborative Project Eleven gifted and talented dance students from Worthing High School and Thomas A Becket Middle School have been working together on a Thursday morning for the last five weeks, to create a dance to Adele's ‘Set Fire to the Rain’, for the Simply Dance Evening in April. All dancers have worked really hard and thoroughly enjoyed working with each other, so come along to support at the Worthing Pavilion. Miss Strudwick

Year 11 Boys Football With two fantastic, hard fought wins over Steyning and Sir Robert Woodard Academy, the Year 11 boys football team are dreaming of big things this year. The boys show excellent team spirit and play good football. There is plenty of commitment at training with 25 plus turning up to battle for a place in the starting line-up. Keep it up and let’s lift the Cup! Mr. Gill

Year 11 Boys Basketball Another great year for the basketball team, dominating many fixtures, brushing aside the likes of Angmering and Shoreham Academy. The team have played some very attractive basketball. Well done to Saman Banakar, Toby Howard, Chris Tyson, Ed Lister, Jon Oker, Chris Hutchinson and Leo Bant. Mr. Gill

Year 9 Boys Rugby The development of this young team is very special and the boys are playing some very attractive rugby at the moment. They are gaining experience during every outing and their confidence is improving immensely. The boys are scoring tries, tackling hard and beginning to really understand the game. Well done to all players involved. Training is open to everyone if you’re interested in playing rugby. Mr. Gill

Nick Oxley 9BCO is off to Dubai during the Easter holidays, representing Sussex Cricket as part of the Emerging Players Programme. Year 8 and 9 Girls Football

Girls’ football continues to thrive at Worthing High School, practices are well attended and competition for the squads is high. Girls’ football is so popular at Worthing High that we were able to enter two full squads into the district league this year! Both teams competed well in the league with the A team reaching the semi-final. TLA proved to be too strong in the semi-final with the A team finishing a respectable fourth out of the 12 schools entered. Well done to everyone involved. Miss Field U13 and U15 Cricket Lord Taverners Indoor Tournament Worthing High School hosted one of the heats for both the U15 and U13 Taverners indoor Tournament this term. The students enjoyed two fantastic days of cricket developing their skills in bowling, batting and fielding. The U13s competed very strongly and narrowly missed out of a place at the county finals to Tanbridge House. The U15’s won their tournament and went on to represent the area in the county finals. On Friday 15th March, the girls travelled to Brighton College for the county finals, where Brighton College, Millais, Oathall Community College, Ratton School and WHS were contesting for top spot. Each school played in a round robin format and there were some extremely close matches that went down to the last over, but Brighton College, who were 2012 champions, managed to win all four of their matches to reach the regional finals. Worthing High finished a respectable fifth overall. The girls played some excellent cricket, the score between WHS and Brighton College was very close – WHS 54 all out v Brighton College 77 for 6. Our dreams of playing a national final at Lord’s was not meant to be, however there is always next year! The girls are busy in training for the outdoor leagues which will start in May. Miss Field 8

Worthing High U16 Girls Football Worthing High School’s Under 16 Girls Football team made it through to the semi-final of the county cup facing Hazelwick school , Crawley. On route to the semi final the team had comfortably beaten both Helenswood and Tideway School in the quarter finals. In the rain, gale force winds and on a very heavy pitch the team played well. Two goals by Jade Minter were sadly not enough to win the match but they worked hard as a team and WHS are very proud of their achievement. Hopefully we will be finalists next year. The girls also had success in the district league completing a streak of unbeaten games. Along the way WHS beat The Littlehampton Academy (3v1), Shoreham Academy (1v0) and Davison (3v1). WHS clocked up draws against Angmering, Durrington and Sion. Overall Worthing High School finished joint top of the table with The Angmering School, with both schools tied on goal difference. However, due to the number of goals scored, WHS finished second. I am really proud of the girl’s performance. The squad has worked hard in training and to get to be semi-finalists of the county cup is a real achievement. The girls should be really proud of their achievements, and it won’t be long before Worthing High school students are County winners...watch this space! Well done girls. Miss Field

Year 11 Girls Basketball The year 11 girls have done themselves proud this season. They have fought and battled with the best of them, competing and attacking every ball, in both the district league and area tournament. As the girls gained more experience and match play it was clear to see both the girls’ skills and fitness levels improving. All girls are to be congratulated on their continued commitment and team spirit throughout the season. The girls have been an absolute pleasure to take to all fixtures over the last four years and I will be very sad to see them go! THANK YOU! Miss Field

YEAR 8 GIRLS NETBALL Congratulations to the Year 8 Netball team for reaching the League District Finals.

Having played extremely well in the Pool stages of the League, the team went in to the ‘Finals’ as Pool Runners-Up; this meant they were

scheduled to play Durrington High

in the

semi-finals. A good close match was

contested, but Durrington High came out

Year 9 Netball

strongest by scoring more goals. This meant Worthing High School finished in 3rd place overall (out of 16 schools who entered the League). All players continue to train hard in preparation for the District Tournament in May.

SQUAD: Erin Upfield, Ava Rucklidge, Beth

Well done to the Year 9 team who played with dedication throughout their League matches. They were extremely thrilled to win their first match against Shoreham Academy, but found the games more challenging when against Towers, Lancing College and Steyning Grammar School, who were also in their Pool. SQUAD: Dolly Culver, Rhiannon Tullet, Chloe Birchley, Katie Scott, Heidi Morrison, Hannah Potiphar, Chloe Hutton.

Hall, Sophie Chaplain, Lottie Sparks, Ella Bourne, Charlotte Barber, Grace Piper.
