WHS students inspired by Steve Brown, Team GB Wheelchair Rugby Captain, London 2012. Steve Brown, GB Wheelchair Rugby Captain at the London Olympics, spent a day at Worthing High School on Friday 18th October. Steve started the day by delivering an inspirational assembly to all year 9 and 10 students on his amazing life story For the remainder of the day, Steve worked with 22 year 10 students on a Sky Living for Sport project to improve self-confidence, participation and self-esteem through physical activity. He focused on the six keys to success: mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills, sports and life knowledge, breaking barriers and planning for success using his own life experiences and team building skills. Marie Field, Leader of Physical Education at Worthing High, said: 'The day was incredible, students were motivated and inspired throughout. Steve is an excellent role model for all our students. Projects like these are invaluable for young people to help them develop important life skills in and outside of school, now and in the future. Worthing High School is looking forward to welcoming Steve back in the New Year.” This is the third year Worthing High School have been supported by the Sky Living For Sport Project. In previous years we have worked with Pete Waterfield, Olympic Diver and Thinus Delport, ex-South Africa and Worcester Warriors rugby union player. Carolyn Dickinson, Headteacher said: “The Sky Living For Sport Project has brought inspirational sports personalities into our school and by sharing their experiences they have been able to support the development of our students. We are looking forward to working with Steve again over the next 12 months.” Miss M Field Leader of PE

Coming out of Retirement
It was with great pleasure to again take the boys Under 16 rugby team, nine years after my last school match. What a great bunch of students who showed dedication and enthusiasm for this wonderful sport. Every Tuesday and sometimes additional training on Mondays saw at least 20 boys attending training and conditioning. All the hard work paid off and resulted in the team coming “runners up” in the league and finalists in the District 12-a-side tournament. The team played 9 games with losses only against a very good Littlehampton team in the final of both competitions. The only disappointment came in the third round County Cup match against Chichester when the team did not perform to expectations. Great performances came from captain Sam Preller, and the “flyer” Callum Morin, who both showed great skill in every game. The forwards also put in some great displays typified by Tom Adams, a mean and fearful prop, Josh Bourne and Marcus Lynch who always gave 100%. What a great pleasure as I move to retirement from teaching, to work with and enthuse a lovely bunch of boys. I wish them all well in the future. Rhys Price
My Hobby...by Tom Best I have been orienteering for 6 months and have recently been competing in high level courses against some very experienced individuals. I have won three regional events and two local events so far; these take place on Saturdays and Sundays. I am a member of Southdown Orienteering and I have been getting higher in the league ranking every week.
Recently
I
joined
the
Junior
Southdown
Orienteering squad and we compete all around the country. Competitions take place on a range of different terrains, so you need to be physically prepared for what the course has on offer.
Before Christmas I will be
competing in the Brighton City race which is a night event on the streets of Brighton. You need to be able to navigate yourself around the course in the quickest way possible by taking bearings and not following the paths. It's an amazing sport and I recommend it to anybody. 3

Ben Curtis - National Water Polo player I have been playing water polo since I was 10 years old and have enjoyed the sport immensely; it has been good fun on a social level and challenging on a physical one. My previous experience as a swimmer provides a distinct advantage when I am playing as I can swim faster than most people in the pool at the time. I have now played three senior games in the Sussex league and have managed to score once with a lob shot against Crawley at the brand new pool at Splashpoint. I have recently tried out for a national league team called Invicta. We have our first National tournament soon which I am very much looking forward to. The team were runners up last year so they have selected a strong squad to try and win with this year; I am hoping to score many goals when we go to Manchester for the tournament and I hope to help lead my new team to victory. Last year I was part of the regional southeast team and the next South East tournament will be held in March and I am very excited to hopefully be playing in it again.
Lewis Strotten - GB Junior Rifle Shooter Lewis Strotten has been selected to represent GB juniors at an overseas international match. This is to be held at Oldenberg in Germany where he will compete in three shooting disciplines: prone, three position .22 rifle and .177 air rifle. This winter season has seen Lewis promoted to the Sussex County Junior A team where he joins three other GB squad shooters. Lewis, pictured right, is seen here receiving the Sussex County Under 16 Champion Trophy, which has never been won by any junior in the club Lewis shoots at (Aldingbourne and District Target Rifle Club). Mr. P Gill
Lewis and Ben chosen for Team Elite Well done to both Lewis Strotten and Ben Curtis who have been selected to represent the area in the ‘Team Elite’ programme. Team elite is an annual programme run to support exceptional students in year 10 for physical education. The programme is held at the University of Chichester. We hope the students enjoy this fantastic opportunity. Miss Field Leader of Physical Education 5
Schools District Cross Country On Wednesday 27th November, over 250 students from 12 schools in the Worthing District competed in the annual Schools District Cross Country championships held at Lancing Manor. The cold but fresh autumnal day provided excellent conditions for fast times as well as tremendous support from spectators. Jack Leitch and Matt Leitch finished 1 st and 2nd respectively in the intermediate boy’s event with an exciting sprint finish at the end; an outstanding achievement by both students. In the intermediate girls race, Eloise Lumley finished 3 rd with Lucy Steel following closely behind finishing 8th. In the junior girls race, Millie Hughes finished an excellent 4 th. Well done to all students who took part. Miss Field Leader of PE

The Leitch Fantastic! Year 11 twins Jack and Matt Leitch were competing in their first ever cross country event for the school. The 4.4km Intermediate Boys race around Lancing Ring was keenly fought with 75 students starting the gruelling event, including some well-respected runners who were expected to take the crown. Jack and Matt ran together and blew the field away finishing over 30 seconds ahead of the field. Worthing High School’s answer to the Brownlee brothers even saved enough energy for an exciting sprint finish with Jack just edging out Matt. Although this was their first cross country event, both Jack and Matt are seasoned orienteers and represent the South East Counties Orienteering Team. The twins finished 1st and 2nd in the London City Urban Orienteering race earlier this year, Matt pipping Jack to the title that time around. Matt also secured the title at the South East Night Championships in August. As well as orienteering, the twins have started road racing; their first event was the 5KM Great South Run in Portsmouth in October, Jack finished 5th and Matthew was 19th out of a field of nearly 3000.

Marc Charlesworth is aiming high Since we last reported, August and September have been a busy time for Marc. He relished competing at the first Junior Masters Tournament to be held for top level junior archers in the UK in August; it was a fantastic day and a great opportunity to shoot in his first Head to Head elimination rounds. Marc then went on to win his category for each of the Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and Southern Counties Junior Championships. He also shot for Sussex at the Southern Counties Inter-counties Team Championships. He has worked on specific technique changes over the summer and it has resulted in some great progress; Marc is currently ranked 10th in the UK for Under 18 archers and is ranked 1st for Under 14s. He credits his success to the kind encouragement, advice and support provided by a number of very special fellow archers. Marc’s latest event was the Junior National Indoor Championships at the Ricoh Centre in Coventry on 7 December. Marc was equal to or within 3 points of the nearest competitor for the whole event but finally pulled a 5 point lead, gaining a new personal best points score of 561 and becoming the Junior National Indoor Under 14 Recurve Champion. It was a fantastic way to end his 2013 archery season and now his sights are set on continuing his technique changes throughout the winter and to also experience field archery. Mr. P. Gill
Luke Moore - swimming sensation At the end of the summer Luke competed in the Brighton Pier to Pier swim, coming 1st in the men’s team event. He also entered the South East Regional 1500 meter open water event in Chichester and was placed 3rd in his age group. Currently, Luke swims for the Division 1 ‘Shiverers’ team in the National Arena Swimming League in London. Luke’s main focus over the coming months is training hard and competing at open meets to attain county and regional qualifying times ready for the coming season. Luke is intensively training about 12 hours per week, within each session he swims about 3500m; the pool work includes training for sprints 100m and distance training 1500m also, arm and leg work for strength on all strokes. Luke has achieved all his county qualifying times for sprints (100m events for all strokes) distance swims (200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle) form events (200m backstroke, breaststroke and fly) and Individual Medley 100m, 200m and 400m swims. We all wish Luke well in his endeavours and watch this space for future updates on Luke’s progress. Mr. P. Gill 8
Nathan Longley - Swinging into contention Nathan has had a fantastic year on the golf course and has dramatically reduced his handicap; he now plays off 1 and is firmly on the radar of England Golf and harbours dreams of playing in a boys international match. Nathan is off to Dubai over the Christmas holidays and is relishing the opportunity of some nice weather to practice in and keep on top of his game. In February, he is off to Portugal for more winter training and at Easter to Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire for England training. Next year Nathan will continue to play for Worthing Golf Club and Sussex; he hopes to enter a few more individual events to ensure he keeps knocking on the England Golf door. After his exams Nathan will fly to Italy to play in the Italian Under 16’s Boys Championship, then up to the Highlands for the Scottish Under 16 & 18 Championships then returning to England to play in the McGregor Trophy, the Northern Boys Championship & the Faldo Series to name but a few! Pictured right is Nathan next to the leaderboard at ‘The Players’ where he shot a course record 7 under 63; directly below is a picture of Nathan with his Worthing GC Scratch Team, winners of the 2013 Optimus Trophy; bottom left is Nathan with his England team mates at their three day training camp at Woodhall Spa. Under 14 Girls Basketball Well done to the U14 girls Basketball team who made it through to the semi-finals of the district league. Unfortunately, in the semi-final, the girls lost to a very strong Angmering side who had an international player amongst their ranks! The girls have worked really hard in training and played some fantastic basketball. They all continue to develop both skills and fitness levels and no doubt will be stronger and fitter next season. Well done to Ella, Beth, Charlotte, Jimmee, Charlotte, Danielle, Hannah, Emily, Poppy, Jazmine and Erin (both absent from photo right) and Catlin who has occasionally helped the team out this season. Miss Field Leader of PE
Under 16 Girls Basketball The U16 girls Basketball team have competed well in the district league developing both their fitness and skills along the way. Unfortunately the team did not make it through to the finals this season however there is always next year! Watch this space. Well done to all the girls who have taken part. The team included: Lucy Steel, Claudia Beaumont, Dolly Culver, Melissa Guengoer, Abi Downham and Zed Brady. Miss Field Leader of PE
Year 9 Boys basketball A real buzz of energy and enthusiasm surrounded the Y9 boys basketball team this season. Commitment at weekly training sessions, great turnouts on game day and a zest to improve made it a pleasure to take the boys team again this year. Strong performances against Chatsmore, Littlehampton, Durrington and Angmering were unfortunately not enough to see us through to the knockout stages. Well done to all those boys who played this season: Harrison Montgomery-Swan, Harri Ball, Jake Mepham-Richards, Luke Moore, Ewan Greenhalf, Bradley Fredericks, Oli Williams, Oli Dengate, Jacob Brindle, Marc Charlesworth, Harvey Cairns, Joe Birch*, Kavan Sahota* and Henry Morin* (* = not pictured). DISTRICT U14 GIRLS BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP THURSDAY 24TH OCTOBER @ WORTHING HIGH SCHOOL The Annual District Tournament was once again a successful event for Worthing High School players. The combined team of Ella Bourne/Jimmee Wood and Jazmin Compton/Erin Upfield were focussed and ready to play – despite taking ages to unpeel the cellophane off the new rackets! Matches were competitive, yet fun and fair; each pair playing one another in a tightly fought competition. Both teams played very well during the tournament and executed some fantastic shots which had their opposition on the back foot. Final results:
INDIVIDUAL TEAM WINNERS: Jazmin and Erin—Worthing High School OVERALL POSITION: Worthing High School– RUNNERS UP Well done and thank you to all the girls! Ms N. Stevenson

Harlequins Rugby Union entertain Worthing High School students The PE Department ran another very successful trip to the Twickenham Stoop as Worthing High School students watched Harlequins v Sale in the LV Cup on Friday 15th November. As well as watching rugby in a professional context, the students were also privileged to form the ‘Guard of Honour’ at the start of the match and also enjoy a game on the pitch at half time, organised by the Quins coaching staff. Forty students from across all years experienced this amazing opportunity and enjoyed every single minute of it! Mr. P. Gill

Cricket Superstar Nick Oxley off to Sri Lanka for Christmas Nick Oxley has again been picked for the Sussex Cricket Emerging Player Programme and has been chosen for an seven man elite squad to jet off to Sri Lanka for a twelve day winter training camp, where he will gain valuable experience playing in heat and humidity. Nick currently trains four times a week with the Sussex Academy and will find out in January if he has been chosen for the final Sussex Academy squad. Nick has already been privileged to travel to Dubai for previous EPP training camps and recently represented a regional squad (the only Sussex player to do so) to play at the infamous Bunbury Festival at Durham University. We wish all the best with his cricket endeavours. Mr. P. Gill
