NEWSLETTER EASTER 2014
TUG OF WAR AND SPORT RELIEF A ROARING SUCCESS The PE Department has been running a number of activities before school and at lunchtimes to increase sporting participation amongst the students at Worthing High School. Each half term, during Family Group time, a different activity is put on to encourage students to work together, attempt to achieve a common goal and above all, enjoy themselves whilst having a little competition along the way. This half term, students have been involved in Tug of War during registration time and there was a ‘Run a mile’ event put on at lunchtimes to raise awareness for disadvantaged others and fundraise for a great cause. We are privileged at Worthing High School to have such a fantastic group of young people who rise to the challenge and always give it their all. Thank you to all students and staff who fully immerse themselves in these activities and make them such an enjoyable event. The PE Department

Students ‘Run a Mile’ for Sport Relief 2014 This year for Sport Relief 2014, the PE Department thought it would encourage a little intra-community spirit with each community being given a designated day during Sport Relief week in which to ‘run a mile’, ending in a Grand Final on Friday 21st March. The hope was that it would encourage more students to participate with the overall goal to raise as much money as possible for such a worthy cause. Every lunchtime, a challenging 400m course was set up by Ms. Stevenson but the emphasis was always on fun and participation, with students being encouraged to ‘walk a mile’ if running was not in their sporting vocabulary. However, the ‘run a mile’ challenge was not exclusively for the pupils, with oxygen on standby, a number of Worthing High staff donned their running gear and took off like Mo Farah to complete the testing course alongside the students. To add a little ‘edge’ to the event and to satisfy the appetite of those students who thrive off the competitive side of sport, the first girl and boy from KS3 and KS4 across the finish line in each community were invited back to once again ‘run another mile’ on Finals Day, Friday March 21 st – the day of Sport Relief 2014. On Finals day Jack Leitch (BDH) beat his brother Matthew (TRM) to the finishing tape in a winning time of 6mins 25secs with Ellis Bubb (HAB) coming in a close third. Lucy Steel (TRM) was the first girl finishing in a time of 8mins 30secs. Fifteen students battled it out in the ‘run a mile’ Grand Final and below is a list of those students and their final finishing positions: Year 8
Year 9
Year 10
Year 11
10. Oliver Mayhew (TAN) 11. Charlotte NashWalker (BJG) 13. Kayne Standing (SGA) 14. Ellen Voice (TFI) 15. Billy Hilton (TNS)
12. Matthew Votta (BJG)
3. Ellis Bubb (HAB) 4. Owen Knight (SSN) 5. Ben Curtis (SSN) 7. Zach Sutherland (HAB) 9. Lucy Steel (TRM)
1. Jack Leitch (BDH) 2. Matthew Leitch (TRM) 6. Abu Ali (TMR) 8. Kieran Bradley (HAB)
Another change this time round with the organisation of ‘run a mile’, is that points were awarded to each family group dependent on what percentage of the form group took part on their allocated day. These points were to be awarded to the victorious KS3 and KS4 Boy’s and Girl’s family group and consequently will go towards the respective community’s total on Activ8 Day 2014. Sponsorship money is still coming in, therefore as we went to press, it is still unknown exactly how much money the children have raised for Sport Relief, but there were close to a hundred participants throughout the week which is very encouraging. I will communicate an exact figure home once we have all the monies in and it has been counted. Well done everyone an excellent event! Mr Morris

Worthing High School Under 16 Girls win the district football league. A selection of Year 10 and 11 students from Worthing High School have been making the School proud through their commitment and excellence in an U16 girls district football league. The team has fought and battled with the best of teams from a range of other schools, including: Shoreham Academy and Davison, competing and attacking in every situation, in both the League and County Cup for football. As the girls gained experience, it was clear to see both the girls’ skills and fitness levels improving. Each of the girls (named below) are to be congratulated on their continued commitment and team spirit throughout the season. In particular, credit must be awarded to: Emily (Captain) who has led by example, Abi whose determination and efforts in goal have kept the opposition on their feet, Holly and Eloise who have been excellent at the back and Lucy and Dolly who have both been pivotal players in midfield and upfront this season. The girls have been an absolute pleasure to take to all the fixtures and I look forward to their continued commitment and team spirit for next season. The team have been a real credit to Worthing High School and a massive well done on their victory. Miss Field Team: Holly Nelson, Abi Downham, Eloise Lumley, Dolly Culver, Emily Wadge and Lucy Steel. Students watch the Lions roar at Twickenham Stoop The PE Department ran another very successful trip to the Twickenham Stoop as Worthing High School students watched England Women v Wales Women in the Ladies 6 Nations. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for students and staff to appreciate the subject in a professional context. Twenty five students from across all years experienced this amazing opportunity and enjoyed every single minute of it! Miss Field
Lewis Strotten hits the mark We will all be keeping our fingers crossed for Lewis as he travels to Germany to take part in an international shooting match for Great Britain against Germany and Sweden in Oldenburg, Germany over the Easter holidays. Lewis has been a member of the GB Junior squad for over a year now and shoots locally at the Aldingbourne Target Rifle Club near Arundel. As you will know from previous newsletters, Lewis is a regular Sussex County shooter and has won numerous titles over the last few years. Lewis has set his sights high for the future and one day we may even see him compete in the Olympics. 5 Mr. Gill
U13 Lady Taverners Indoor schools Tournament Worthing High School played host to one of the Lady Taverner’s cricket heats today. The team showed great determination and commitment throughout. Batting, bowling and fielding all improving as the day went on. Some fantastic bowling was on display from Charlotte, Yasmin, Caitlin and Ella, with Caitlin F working hard to stop all the balls in her position as wicket keeper. Amy and Charlotte made some incredible catches and both Kiera and Sarah batted well. Against tough opposition, the girls finished 4th, runners up to Tanbridge House, Millais and The Angmering school. The girls are now looking forward to their softball summer league. Miss Field Leader of PE
Matthew claims MK gold! My name is Matthew Clegg and I’m in 8BDA. I am a gymnast at a club called Flipitas and we train at Durrington Middle School. We don’t have a purpose built gym so we can’t train on a sprung floor. This however doesn’t stop us from entering competitions. I have competed in two regional competitions in Guildford and I won two bronze medals. On Sunday 23 rd March, I went to Milton Keynes for a national competition and competed on floor and vault. First I competed on vault and I did a handstand flat back. This is where you run up to a tall block and you jump on the springboard; you then put your hands on the mat and fall flat onto it. I had 2 practices and 2 real goes. The best of the real vaults counted for the competition. Once I had done my vault I moved onto floor. Everyone was allowed a 5-minute practice to warm up their routines but there wasn’t much space on the mats. After practice we had to clear the floor and gymnasts were called up one by one to perform their routines. I was one of the last to perform and my routine consisted of: Shoulder stand (hands on floor), bridge, round off, backward roll, star jump, half turn tuck jump, forward roll, tuck jump, slide to side, one-handed cartwheel, pike fold. There was a long wait until the award ceremony while the judges totalled up the scores and when it finally started there was a lot of tension between gymnasts. When we got round to the group I was competing in (12 and above) I won a Gold Medal. Overall it was a 9-hour day and I was exhausted on the 2-hour drive home.

Year 8 and 9 Girls Football The U13 and U14 girls have done themselves proud this season. Playing in the district league, the team has fought and battled with the best of them, competing and attacking every ball. As the girls gained more experience and match play it was clear to see both the girls’ skills and fitness levels improving, this resulting in their first win of the season victorious against Steyning winning 1v0. All girls are to be congratulated on their continued commitment and team spirit throughout the season. The girls have been an absolute pleasure to take to all fixtures and I look forward to their continued commitment and team spirit for next season and their tournament after half term. An excellent start to a growing, social and popular team. I would also like to thank Dolly Culver in Year 10 who has helped coach the team this season. Well done to all the girls involved. Miss Field Leader of PE Team: Erin Upfield, Jazmine Compton, Ella Bourne, Sarah Bent, Erin Wake, Danielle Wilding, Charlotte Nash-Walker, Lottie Sparks and Catlin Ford.
YEAR 9 NETBALL A relatively short season amidst regular Thursday practices. This year we were entered into the Wednesday Pool of the District League, playing each of our Pool matches at SRWA. A promising start in the first half of our first game against Steyning (leading 2-0) was dented by a one goal loss in the end (3-4), a result which did not match the play; but this didn’t hamper the girls’ style, enthusiasm and determination to succeed in the second game. Although they recorded a defeat to Sion, the team did match Sion for quality and good team play. This approach was taken into matches three and four, where our play simply went up a notch resulting in two fantastic victories – performances which would certainly have beaten Steyning! A rousing 6-2 win against a good team from Shoreham Academy was followed by an uplifting 19-0 victory against the SRWA team. Despite the improved performances, this talented team unfortunately just missed out to Steyning in making it through to the semi-final stages of the league to play against the winners and runners-up of the other League pool that was played at DHS. We await news of a date for the revised Year 9 District Tournament, which had to be postponed due to the bad weather back in February, where hopefully the team can excel and show their true colours! Squad: Lottie Sparks, Ella Bourne, Caitlin Moorfield, Erin Upfield, Charlotte Barber, Beth Hall, Ava Rucklidge, 7 Lauryn Foord, Kolina Koneswaran and Amy Blower. Well done to all who played. Ms Stevenson and Miss Guirey
Levi ‘The Power’ Mahoney checks in with some big scores Levi Mahoney in 8SHU started playing darts in September last year and has taken to the sport like a duck to water! In the last six months, he has hit a staggering fourteen 180's and his highest checkout in a game is a whopping 124. Levi has been impressing darts players, managers and coaches so much that he was given a game for the Sussex Junior reserves recently, shooting a 17.11 average. Levi hopes to achieve full Sussex honours soon and we wish him all the best for the future. Mr. Gill
Luke swimming to success Luke Moore in 9TML took the silver medal overall in his age group, following the final weekend of the Sussex County Swimming Championships two weeks ago. He took 1st place in the 400IM and the 200 Fly events, and 2nd place in most of his other events.
He also secured the required regional qualifying
times for the South East Regional championships which take place on the 3/4/5 May. Fantastic work Luke, well done! Mr. Gill
My hobby, by Tom Best 11BDH I am an orienteer and have been participating in the sport for a number of years. Recently, I've competed in the Southern Championships and the South -East Championships, which have been some of the hardest events I've competed in during my orienteering experience. The big events consist of longer courses and harder level of difficulty to catch you out when you are slightly distracted from maintaining a constant speed. At the Southern Championships it was a 6km event, which is longer than I am used to when I am at a local event with my club. At big events you are on your own whereas at a local event you know that you can find somebody from your club and they can give you a helping hand. But when you are at a major event you do not have that, you need to put in 100% at all times and just hope you don't go wrong. Especially when the weather is bad as it's another thing to keep out for when going over a number of terrains. I think orienteering is a great sport which is very competitive which can keep you very fit; it also helps you gain map skills and knowledge of the area around you. 8
Ben gets a chance on the big stage Ben Colburn in 9TCR is about to make his motor racing debut in the Junior Touring Car Championship (JTCC) in two week’s time. Ben, aged 14, who recently gained his racing licence, will be driving a Citroen Saxo VTR for his race team, Westbourne Motorsport. Ben has been testing his new car extensively over the last few weeks and is very excited and raring to get the season going. His first race will be at the Rockingham Motor Speedway in Kettering and all his family and friends are extremely keen to see how he gets on in his first ever race in motor sport. Good luck Ben, we wish you well out there on the track ! Mr. Gill

Key Stage 3 Boys Rugby Team experience their first ever games and spring a surprise or two!
The team have been training religiously each Wednesday after school since January and have had to learn the game of rugby from scratch. With very few regular club rugby players to steer the ship, we have focused on commitment, enjoyment and fundamental skills to ensure all enjoy the game. Fortunately, we have been getting 25 keen players to training sessions each week meaning there has been competition for places in the first XV. Although the boys learnt some harsh lessons in their first few matches, the potential started to show as they held current District Champions St. Andrews to a scoreless first half and even matched them in the second half too until the all boys school forced their way over the line twice to seal the victory. However, the teams proudest moment was in the District Tournament at Worthing Rugby Club when they experienced their first ever win, thrashing Shoreham Academy 17-0. Some excellent line breaks and determination saw the boys taste victory against the most unlikely opposition. Inspired by the win, the margin of defeat against the top teams in the area during the final games of the tournament narrowed, where seasoned rugby teachers from other schools commented on the progress and achievement by the Worthing High team. I’m already looking forward to next year! Well done to all that played. Mr. Gill

Year 10 Boys Football Team Flying High With a number of wins under their belt, namely against Sion and Chatsmore, the team have magnificently marched into the District League semi finals and play Shoreham Academy for a place in the final after Easter. Through excellent teamwork and a genuine motivation to do well, the boys have truly excelled this season. Credit to all involved and good luck in the semi final. Mr. Gill
Year 11 Boys Football – a ‘positive’ season It may not have been the finale that the Year 11 Boys Football team would have chosen to end their time at Worthing High as the team’s statistics this year do not make for appealing reading: played 4, lost 3, won 1. However, it was the manner in which these students went about their business on the field which was so impressive, working hard, supporting each other and most importantly demonstrating huge resilience in the face of massive adversity. But they never stopped competing once, never stopped battling and constantly attempted to fashion scoring opportunities at one end whilst attempting to keep a ‘tight ship’ at the other. Stand out performances this year came from Rui Buckland, Callum Morin and Tom Adams who were the lynch pins, the backbone of the team. With all three standing firm being, quite literally, our last line of defence. They boys only victory was against Chatsmore, beating them 1- 0 on an awful pitch which had only just received the ‘all clear’ a few days prior to game after being underwater for the best part of three months. It was exceptionally heavy going but once again the boys never moaned about the state of the pitch and just got on with the task in hand with a great degree of maturity. A very physical and demanding game followed two days later against the league leaders Durrington High where the boys were narrowly beaten. The 3-0 score line certainly did not reflect the true result of the game with the Worthing High boys matching the opposition’s physicality and work rate and hitting the crossbar and post. Lady luck was not on our side that day. Due to the team being decimated by injury we fielded a massively understrength side for our next game against The Littlehampton Academy (TLA) in which we were comprehensively beaten and outplayed, never looking at any point as if we were going to score. As I said at the start of this article you certainly cannot fault the team’s attitude and they were always upbeat, debriefing the game and discussing new tactics and strategies to try out next week on the minibus back to school. So it is with a heavy heart that I bid the boys farewell, it has been an absolute pleasure being involved with these students over the past four years. They will all be sorely missed by all in the PE Department here at Worthing High, they are ALL winners in our eyes. Mr Morris

Students enjoy a night out at the Albion The PE Department took 30 students to the AmEx Community Stadium on Tuesday 11th March to watch Brighton v QPR in the Championship. It was a chilly night and the first trip we have organised to the stadium. The Worthing High School behaved impeccably and were thrilled to see Brighton win 2-0 against an opposition full of ex-Premiership stars. A big thank you to Ms. Stevenson and Miss Guirey for their support and supervision on the day. Due to the success of the trip, it will be highly likely we will run more trips to the AmEx next season. Watch this space! Mr. Gill

Ricochet shine at DanceTime 2014 Worthing High School Dance Company, Ricochet, performed a flamboyant, colourful and stylish Bollywood themed dance at this year’s DanceTime. The dance focused largely on the intricate ways each hand movement and gesture inspires to tell a story in Indian dance culture. Cleverly fused with lively travelling phrases and strong unity within group formations, the dance was full of energy and happiness, encouraging the audience to get up and join in with the fun of dancing! By the end of the dance the audience were entranced and full of praise and applause. So much so that the organisers of DanceTime have invited us back to perform the dance again at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley in April as part of the DanceTime 2014 Celebration Evening – this is a big honour and achievement as only fourteen schools in the whole of West Sussex (over 125 schools took part in DanceTime this year) have been selected for this celebratory event. Dance performances to look forward to include: *Simply Dance Show – 24thApril 2014 @ Pavilion Theatre, Worthing. Tickets go on sale from the Box Office from Saturday 5th April. *DanceTime 2014 Celebration Evening – 25th April 2014 @ The Hawth Theatre, Crawley * News of the exciting collaborative dance projects and workshops currently being choreographed and worked on with WHS, TAB Middle and The Vale schools will be in our next PE Newsletter – along with pictures and feedback from our Simply Dance Show.
