Worthing High School Cricket Academy Launch Nearly 225 year 5 and 6 pupils from Broadwater, Chesswood, Downsbrook, Thomas A Becket, Vale and Downsbrook Middle attended the cricket academy launch. Students were taught by Worthing High School sport leaders and Sussex Cricket in the Community coaches in the morning, developing their cricket skills. They completed a carousel of activities, and participated in a tournament in the afternoon. Marie Field, Leader of Physical Education at Worthing High School, said “what a wonderful event, it is so nice to see so many young students active and engaged in cricket. Our sports leaders from year 9 were exceptional. The cricket academy will start in September when students of all ages and abilities can get involved by joining the mass participation club, going for trials and becoming academy cricket players or following the leadership pathway and becoming skilled as coaches or officials. It’s a very exciting venture for Worthing High School and Sussex Cricket Board”. Steve Feazey, Cricket Development Manager added “we are thrilled to be entering into a partnership with Worthing High School. The academy programme will give students the opportunity to play more cricket throughout the year and our aim is to continue to improve the standard of players in the Worthing area. Through the academy programme, we will ultimately see a positive long term effect on the cricket clubs in the local area, as well as the school and its students. The launch was a great success and we are looking forward to getting the ball rolling in September”. Later in the day, students participated in a tournament where the Sussex mascot ‘Sid the Shark’ joined in with the fun. Students played several games before moving into cup, plate and shield competitions. The overall final was played between TAB 1 and Vale 1, with some fantastic fielding and batting skills on show. TAB 1 were victorious and were crowned Worthing High School’s first academy cricket tournament winners. Lewis Hatchett from Sussex CCC arrived in the afternoon to present the medals and trophy and we are already looking forward to the tournament next year.

Forty tutor groups, representing each of the four communities, took part in a carousal of activities including bench ball, softball, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, handball, table tennis, rowing, basketball, dodge ball, nerf and football. Tutor groups were looking to earn as many points as they could for their community through team work, participation, effort and competition. There was a real sense of community ethos throughout the school which created a great atmosphere for students and staff alike and kept spirits high despite the wet weather! All four communities were fantastic and it was hard to announce a winner. The honours this year for the first time went to SALVINGTON. Ex-student Iain Lynch excels in Brighton Marathon Iain Lynch, an ex pupil of WHS, who left in 2012, ran the Brighton marathon this year for a charity very close to his heart. He is only 18 and this was his first ever marathon, he has never even run a half marathon before. Iain completed the course in 3hrs 30 mins 17 secs and finished 700th overall out of 10,000+ runners and 257th out of 2224 in the male 18-34 category. He has currently raised over £650 with gift aid donations for the charity Wolfram Syndrome UK which was set up to help his sister and others affected by the same condition. Well done Iain, a fantastic effort. Mr. Gill Nick Oxley’s cricket goes from strength to strength Nick Oxley (Broadwater) was selected by Sussex CCC for trials for South East England in March. After months of training, he was picked for the final squad and was included in the squad that will travel to Nottingham to play in the Bunbury cricket festival. The elite player festival will see SE England play three other representative sides from England; The Midlands, The South and West, and The North of England. After the festival a handful of the best players are picked to trial from the England Under 17s. Last Tuesday, Nick’s team played The South and West, Nick bowled very well and took two wickets guiding his side to victory. Nick said: “This season for Sussex I have taken 7 wickets in 4 games, however my batting has not been up to the standards I would like. I have been playing regularly for Sussex Academy since the start of the season and I hope to do so for the remainder of the season.” Nick has been a regular in the year 10 cricket team who have performed fantastically well this season. He has taken many wickets and made quite a few runs. The team have been declared joint District League winners this year. In December, Nick has been invited to tour with Sussex CCC Academy to Sri Lanka. The tour will last three weeks and the team will play a number of games against local sides. We wish you all the best Nick. Mr. Gill

Sussex beckons again for Oliver Oliver Williams (West Park) in Year 9 attended the Sussex Badminton Trials resulting in him being selected, for the third year in a row, for the Sussex Badminton Under 15's Squad. The new season starts in September 2014 through to May 2015. Here is Oliver collecting his squad certificate for the 2013/14 season. Congratulations! Mr. Gill

Lewis shooting for the stars Year 10 student Lewis Strotten (Durrington Middle) was selected to represent the Great Britain Junior Shooting Team for a tournament held in Oldenburg, Germany during the Easter holidays. Competing against Germany and South Africa, Lewis competed in the 10 meter Air-Rifle men’s event which is a 60 shot match lasting 55 minutes; he scored an incredible 536 out of 600. His score was only a couple points short of his PB which is 544 out of 600. On day two of the championship, Lewis competed in the 50 metre men’s team prone event, scoring 575/600 which was only two points short of his PB of 577. The three combined scores were enough to blow away the 21 other international competitors and they each won a Gold Medal and certificate. During April, Lewis competed at the English Small-bore Shooting Union (ESSU) Championships in the 50 metre .22 prone men’s event where he shot a new personal best score of 584/600. This event is open to any age group in England and there were nearly 100 competitors in total. The field was gradually reduced to 40 shooters over a number of rounds and Lewis eventually won a bronze medal in the Under 21 category. The sport requires great mental strength and furious concentration and Lewis has both in abundance. Lewis is looking forward to future shooting tournaments at the National Small-Bore Rifle Association Headquarters in Bisley during the summer and has high hopes to push on to represent the full GB squad in the future and maybe represent his country at a future Olympics too. Lewis was the first recipient of the inaugural Worthing High School Sports Bursary which was unanimously awarded to him as he had fulfilled all of the extensive sporting and academic selection criteria, a fund kindly donated to the School by Shafiques Indian Restaurant and Carpenter Box financial specialists to help finance students in their elite sporting endeavours. Mr. Gill

U15 Cricket – Outdoor soft ball league Worthing High School entered both the U15 league and U13 girls’ outdoor leagues this year. The students spent a number of weeks playing various schools in and out of the Sussex area. The U15 team played fantastic cricket throughout the league. The team did not get off to a great start, finishing seven runs behind Tanbridge House (Horsham) in awful conditions. As the team’s confidence grew the cricket just got better and better! Runs after runs, wickets after wickets, the cricket on show was excellent. Worthing High School won convincingly against Bishop Luffa (Chichester) and Christ’s Hospital (Horsham). Two schools were tied top of the table and WHS needed a win of 40 runs to come second in the league or just over 100 runs to finish 1st in the league and go through as winners to the semi-finals. The girls last game was against Angmering. WHS won the toss and decided to bat first, the team’s target was 100 runs to finish top of the table. The girls were fantastic – finishing on 147 runs after 15 overs. Ella Bourne (Vale) retired on 67 scoring nine 6’s on the way and in the field Lauryn (Vale), Grace (Vale) and Ella (Vale) all took wickets, with catches from Skye (Vale). Angmering were all out for 29. Thinking the team had secured a place in the semi-finals we were unfortunately given disappointing news that because the game was played on the Friday the result was not counted towards the league results. This is such a shame as I have no doubt the girls could have reached the final and potentially won the Sussex league. Well done to all on a wonderful season with fantastic cricket. Miss Field Leader of Physical Education

Excellent season for Year 9 Cricket team The Y9 cricket reached the District League semi-finals for the second consecutive year but again lost out narrowly to Shoreham Academy in the last four. After three stunning wins against Durrington High, St. Andrews and Sion, the team marched into the semis on merit having played some excellent cricket. Boosted by regular appearances by England Development Squad player Ella Bourne (Vale), the team set about their business in clinical fashion with team members taking lots of wickets and scoring many runs. All-rounders Oliver Dengate (Vale) and Kavan Sahota (Vale) starred each week with the bat and ball, whilst James Fricker (TAB) was our resident catcher extraordinaire! Looking forward to next season. Mr. Gill

Team included: Kavan Sahota, Ben Redman, Sam Edgoose, Imam Ali, Ella Bourne, Harvey Cairns, Ben Colburn, Oliver Dengate, Cam Blackburn, Blake Harvey, Jake Swift, Charlie Weelen, Connor Wilson and James Fricker. Well done to you all.

Year 11 student Nathan Longley gets the England call Nathan Longley (Vale) in Year 11 has made such an impression on selectors with his sublime golf play and excellent results that he was called up to represent England Golf U16s against Spain in Madrid in May. The England coaches and management team have been watching a number of boys closely since the start of the year and eyeing up potential candidates to represent the country. During the Easter holidays Nathan finished third in the Faldo Series at Moortown in Leeds in horrendous conditions, beating a number of players with previous England caps. Nathan came fourth in the Sussex Colts U21 Championship held at Mannings Heath in April and was victorious with a one under gross score of 70 in the Shoreham Officer Bowl in May at Worthing GC where 172 golfers took part. He currently represents Sussex U18s and Worthing GC men’s scratch team, playing off a handicap of 1. These high profile victories and top five finishes have given Nathan the nod that he would fulfil a lifelong ambition to play for England. Nathan travelled to Madrid on the 22nd-26th May representing England Under 16s v Spain Under 16s. The team was comprised of four boys and four girls, playing at the National Golf Centre near Madrid, and the competition was played over two days with foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. Even though England lost the match, Nathan gained some valuable international experience and has his sights set on future appearances for his country. Since his return from the continent, Nathan has a busy schedule ahead with plans to play in the Sussex Amateur at The Nevill, The McGregor Trophy at Radcliff on Trent, the Scottish Boys Championship in Edinburgh, the Italian Boys Championship, the North of England Boys championship, the Carris Trophy and the Sir Henry Cooper Masters. We wish Nathan all the very best with his future golfing endeavours. Mr. Gill

Ben takes first place in round 5 of the Junior Saloon Car Championship at Oulton Park, Cheshire. Ben Colburn (Vale) aged 14, headed to Oulton Park on Saturday 17 th May 2014 with three podiums under his belt from four races. A fantastic achievement, having only started to drive at the beginning of the year and having never raced before in any form of motorsport. It was a busy meeting with qualifying and two races all in the same day. The qualifying session was 20 minutes long and the 2 fastest times gained, were the positions they set on the grid for race 1 and race 2. Ben held pole position for the majority of the qualifying session before being eclipsed by his rival Ben Mills. Ben qualified 2nd for both races, his best qualifying so far this year. Race 1 and they were lined up on the grid. The red lights came on and changed immediately, catching out both Ben and the pole sitter who were slow off the line. Ben recovered well to make 3rd at the first corner. The chase was on. Ben soon had himself in the zone and was all over the car in front, a couple of laps later he overtook him and then focused on the car ahead which was in the lead. Ben was on fire and soon caught him up. He set the fastest lap of the race. Having made the leader aware he was behind him Ben pulled off a fantastic manoeuvre with a better exit from the Island Hairpin, flashing past before the Knickerbrook Chicane to take the lead. After what seemed a long 15 minute race the chequered flag came out and Ben won his first ever race. What a follow on from his brother James winning at Thruxton two weeks earlier in the Clio Cup Championship alongside the British Touring Cars. All buoyed up, everyone was looking forward to race 2. It was the last event of the day. Ben got off to a much better start and at the first corner was in 2 nd place. This was where he remained until the chequered flag came out, completing a fantastic weekend’s racing. What an achievement. Ben is currently 2nd in the Championship and his next race meeting is at Brands Hatch on the last weekend of July. Mr. Gill

My Hobby by Eden Shelton (West Park) My affliction began about 2 years ago. Every Wednesday evening, my dad and his friends would go out, leaving me naturally curious about what they were doing. One day I plucked up the courage to ask, and I discovered that they would all travel down to Gosport, a small area near Portsmouth, and go BMXing on a race track down there. It soon came to my attention there was a small organisation based there, Gosport BMX club, who held ‘Club Races’ every Sunday. This is where, anyone from anywhere, can take part in heated battles to be the fastest competitor they can possibly be. I travelled down to the track one Sunday with my Dad and my Brother, and watched them as they flew round the track on expensive race machines and I knew that I wanted a piece of this. A few weeks later, I made my way down to the track and rented a bike from the container, run by the very kind owners of the club. The bike was a 24 inch ‘Cruiser’ BMX, worth at least £400 new. I also had to borrow the necessary protection, such as gloves and a full face helmet. By this time, I could hear my heart pumping in my chest and I felt sick. There were only 5 girls, including me, out of approximately 200 riders that day. I entered the pens where we lined up before the racing began, and I observed my opponents. All the other girls in my category were either my age or younger, which put me slightly at ease yet my nerves were still on a high. We were then led up the walkway, and ordered to get into our allocated gates. The barrier is like a small, rounded platform which rises up out of the concrete, and the riders balance their front wheel, with their feet on their pedals and their legs straight, on it until it randomly drops and you are sent careering down the steep hill. I made my way to the correct lane and placed my front wheel coordinated with the corrugations on the metal stand. 45 seconds later, I knew I had found my passion. However, I hit a bump… literally! A few race meets later, I decided to race a 20” BMX, with smaller wheels, just to broaden my experience. I found it OK in practice, but when it came to my first race, I landed myself on a spinal board, being rushed off in an ambulance, to endless cuts and bruises and a suspected broken collarbone and pelvis. But I was alive; and I had never felt more alive in my entire life. The crash didn’t put me off, though. I bounced back next season, with a new bike and a new hunger for success. I had missed the taste of the speed as I sprinted round the track and the sound of the panting individuals desperate to overtake you to gain a place. I found fuel, after coming 2nd and 1st in a few of my finals, and knowing what it felt like to be the fastest in that race gave me a huge confidence boost and a push to go further. This season has been more successful than the previous ones- I have not ended up in A&E or broken any parts of my body. My current BMX is a 24 inch cruiser ‘Crupi’, hand built from America, worth exactly £1042.23 new from the dealer website. It weighs little to nothing and flies from the word go.

Marc Charlesworth selected for Team England at Home Nations Tournament Worthing High School student Marc Charlesworth (West Park) represented England in the Junior Nationals Home Nations Archery Tournament on 5-6 July at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. Marc’s remarkable rise to international archery has been achieved through hard work, consistent results and an incredible drive to succeed. Marc represented Sussex against Hampshire in May and has added a further four county records to his already impressive repertoire this season. At the Junior Nationals Weekend some promising young archers were in action and a great weekend was had by all. On the Saturday, a Junior World Archery Star Event was held where archers shoot a Metric round. Within that event there were also teams representing Scotland, England and Wales who were participating in the Home Nations Match, and also regional teams. Marc was representing England on Saturday and came 4th out of 22 archers in his category - Metric 2 Junior Gentleman Recurve with a new personal best Metric 2 score of 1197. He was the top English archer in his category. England won the Home Nations Match and Marc was also in the Junior Gentleman Regional Recurve Team who claimed 2nd place for SCAS (Southern Counties Archery Society). On the Sunday Marc competed in the Junior National Championships shooting an imperial round. It was a challenging day and Marc was pleased to attain 6 th place out of 24 archers in his category with a new Bristol 2 personal best score of 1116. Marc was also in the Sussex County Mixed Recurve Team which came 12th out of 28 counties. Marc said “It was a very enjoyable, exciting experience and I was very proud to represent England, I enjoyed the team atmosphere and hope to have the opportunity again in the future”. Marc’s scores at Lilleshall have gained him the Junior Master Bowman Award for the 3rd consecutive year, being the highest award a junior archer can attain during a year. Well done Mark, we look forward to seeing how you progress over the season. Mr. Gill

Year 8 Boys Cricket team make District Final A fantastic season for Worthing High’s Year 8 Boys Cricket team have seen them remain unbeaten in the league and play off stages and as a result have reached the District Final at their first attempt. Their first game of the season was at home against Chatsmore High School. Chatsmore won the toss and elected to bat where they posted a lowly 49 runs off 10 overs, mainly due to the devastating form of the Worthing High bowlers where they bowled consistently good line and length, with Harry Roberts taking 3 wickets. It was then Worthing’s turn with the bat taking only 5 overs to chase down Chatsmore’s total. Next up in the league it was St. Andrews to face the might of Worthing’s bowlers who once again were ever dependable, pegging St. Andrews back to just 44 runs in 12 overs, which saw Luke Winter take 3 wickets. Worthing’s two opening batsman were all that were needed to surpass St. Andrews’ total with Jaynil Patel remaining unbeaten on 22. The boys next game was against Durrington High who also proved to be of little threat, posting a score of 51 all out off of 11 overs. Again Worthing’s two top order batsman were all that were required to exceed Durrington’s run total, this time it was Muadh Khan’s turn to be unbeaten on 28. The boys’ final league game was one which would prove to be Worthing High’s toughest test yet. Worthing lost the toss and were put in to bat first; after suffering a mini top order collapse, Muadh Khan once again proved what an excellent young talent he is with bat (or ball) in hand, retiring on another unbeaten 28. Worthing posted a not insurmountable target of 71 runs to win off 12 overs. However, with some very canny fielding placements by Worthing High’s captain, an excellent catch by Jak Tyler out by the boundary, dismissed Angmering’s most threatening batsman and, once again, consistently good bowling where Muadh Khan took 2 wickets, Angmering only managed to achieve 56 in return in the allotted overs. The semi-final saw the boys play against Sion where Worthing lost the toss and were once again put in to bat. Joe Pearcy and Muadh Khan opened and what followed was a masterful display of batting by Khan scoring another unbeaten 28 which saw him hit one 4 and three 6’s in succession during the same over. However, a batting collapse meant that Sion only required 70 runs to win off 16 overs. Enter Khan and Patel, whose bowling figures of 6 for 12 and 2 for 12 respectively would not have looked out of place on an Ashes scoreboard, meant that Sion were all out for 26 runs off just 7 overs. The boys are now through to the District Final against a strong Steyning Grammar School team who are also unbeaten this season, a real ‘Clash of the Titans’! Well done boys; whatever the result in the final you should all be immensely proud of your achievement this season, I certainly am. The Year 8 Cricket Team: Muadh Khan (C), Jaynil Patel (VC), Joe Pearcy, Luke Winter, Harry Roberts, Christopher Sherman, Oliver Gwennap, William Hollands, Jack Carne-Gilder, Jak Tyler, Thomas Bowman Mr Morris

A summer Rounders Fest for the girls! Years 8, 9 and 10 have enjoyed a lively few weeks of rounders this term – with both their League matches and Tournaments being played close together. The Year 9 and 10 teams were first up with their Leagues. Games were tightly fought and largely won, or lost, by a rounder here or there! In the League the year 9 team won 2 games and lost 3 but showed true competitive spirit and teamwork. This spirit was shown again in the Tournament where a lot of progress was demonstrated as they scored more rounders and in particular fielded exceptionally well. The year 10s were even more precise and determined, especially with their accurate and tight fielding skills. The speed at which the ball was often played to Abi at 2nd base was positively inspiring – and greatly annoying to the opposition as it prevented them scoring the important ½ rounders! Unfortunately, they did not progress to the finals on ‘rounders difference’. Similarly, they missed out on a semi-finals place in by a couple of rounders. The team should be very proud of their achievements though. The year 8’s worked hard as a team in their League, winning two of their matches, but came up against some extremely strong batting teams in their league Pool, which meant they didn’t make it through the finals. Well done to all players who showed great commitment and determination in every game – next year we hope to make the finals! Players: Year 8: Amelia Newnham, Charlotte Nash-Walker, Harriet Dunn, Caitlin Ford, Sarah Seacombe, Lucy Brunning, Charlie Ford, Sarah Bent, Amy Blower, Dee Wilding, Hannah Mitchell, Charlotte Bevis, Caitlin Buller Year 9: Jazmin Compton, Erin Upfield, Jimmi Wood, Lottie Sparks, Chanel Tickner, Ella Bourne, Caitlin Moorfield, Emma Wilson, Grace Piper, Claire Knowlson, Year 10: Dolly Culver, Abi Downham, Lucy Steel, Gabby George, Zed Brady, Nikita Cook, Maryam Firoozmand, Jessica Nicholas. Simply Dance 2014 On Thursday 24th April over 200 students from Worthing High School, The Vale, Heene C of E School and Thomas Becket Middle and First School all took part in the annual Simply Dance show held at Worthing Pavilion. The performers met at 4.00pm as they eagerly waited for their final rehearsal onstage before the big event. At 6.00pm the audience arrived, filling the Pavilion auditorium, as the performers all nervously waited patiently backstage to complete their final performance after months of rehearsals. The evening consisted of twenty dance performances, each showing a different style, genre and theme. The evening was a brilliant success and enjoyed by all. Collaborative Projects TAB & WHS G&T Collaborative Project For the second year running five year 11 students, Rebecca Sim, Lucie Melvin, Harriet Pilcher, Georgia McPherson and Neath Champion-Weeks worked collaboratively with students from TAB Middle school to create a contemporary piece called “Iris”. The group worked extremely well together and all dancers thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the collaborative project.

The Vale & WHS G&T Collaborative Project Also for the second year running Worthing High School invited six gifted and talented students from The Vale to work collaboratively with 6 gifted and talented year 10 students, Isobel Hansel, Francesca Tratt, Sophie Penfold, Isabel Milne, Megan Mustill and Ella Digby to create a dance in a day. The group worked very hard throughout the whole day and created a piece based on the music “Let me be your star”.

The Vale & WHS Collaborative Projects The year 10 students, as part of their BTEC Performing Arts course had to run a 6 week extracurricular dance club for students at The Vale Middle School. The dance club was very successful and the group were able to create two dance pieces, ‘Matilda’ and ‘Aliens’, which were both brilliantly performed in the Simply dance evening. Miss Strudwick

The evening was a huge success and is an annual event on the school calendar. It was an excellent evening and demonstrates the huge impact sport and physical activity has on many of our students. Congratulations to all those who received certificates and awards. We look forward to building on this success next year. Many thanks to all students and carers for attending the evening and to all members of the PE Department—who without them none of this would be possible. The PE Department look forward to seeing you all again next year. Miss M Field Leader of PE 31

Sussex County Cricket Ground As a reward for all their hard work this year and last, a number of students were invited to accompany members of the PE department on a trip to the County Ground in Hove. Those students who had gone over and above the call of duty for the PE department, either by supporting the extra-curricular programme or by working well in lessons, enjoyed the chance to tour the ground and experience Sussex Sharks reigning victorious over the Northampton Steelbacks in the culmination of a four day LV County Cup clash. After the game, the students were allowed on to the outfield to take part in a little game of cricket of their own, always under the watchful eye of the Sussex Cricket Coaches. A memorable day was had by students and staff alike. Mr. Morris
