HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR TOWNHOUSE OWNERS Now that the weather is cooling down, everyone wants to open the windows to enjoy the fresh air. Opening the windows can bring up issues if the doors, windows, screens and weather stripping have not been maintained properly. Doors, windows, screens and weather stripping are the responsibility of the homeowner to maintain. With the hot Florida sun, window screens fade and dry rot in time. It’s a good idea to replace screens when they are worn, torn or dry rotted to keep pests out. Assuring the weatherstripping around your doors are free from holes and working properly will help to keep pests out, keep your power bills from increasing and keep water out. If you want to make any exterior changes to doors, windows, hardware, etc., you

WHAT A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD WE LIVE IN
Let’s have a fresh start to the New Year! W
ell, it’s finally time to close the chapter on 2020! While we don’t know what the New Year has in store, we can look to last year for lessons on how to handle whatever may come up. It’s easiest to get bogged down in what we’ve gone through versus where we’re going, but, in the end, that won’t WILL CAMPBELL PRESIDENT, BALWIN PARK get us anywhere … see what I did there? JOINT COMMITTEE Every new year, there are countless lists of “Best Of” or “Year in Review” and all that. We’ve all seen the endless streams of Instagram stories from Spotify’s 2020 Wrapped, so I will try to spare you that kind of list. A couple years ago, I found the list below, and after the year we’ve had, I wanted to share it with you — my friends and neighbors. Without further ado, here’s 20 things to let go of in the New Year.
n Let go of blaming anyone for anything; be accountable for your own life. If you don’t like something, you have two choices: Accept it or change it.
n Let go of all thoughts that don’t make you feel empowered and strong.
n Let go of thinking there’s a right and wrong way to do things or to see the world. Enjoy the contrast and celebrate the diversity and richness of life.
n Let go of feeling guilty for doing what you truly want to do. n Let go of the fear of the unknown; take one small step and watch the path reveal itself. n Let go of regrets; at one point in your life, that “whatever” was exactly what you wanted. n Let go of worrying; worrying is like wishing for what you don’t want.
14
BALDWIN PARK LIVING | JANUARY 2021
n Let go of thinking you are damaged; you matter, and the world needs you just as you are. n Let go of thinking your dreams are not important; always follow your heart. n Let go of being the “go-to person” for everyone, all the time; stop blowing yourself off and take care of yourself first, because you matter. n Let go of thinking everyone else is happier, more successful or better off than you. You are right where you need to be. Your journey is unfolding perfectly for you.
n Let go of cheating on your future with your past. It’s time to move on and tell a new story. n Let go of thinking you are not where you should be. You are right where you need to be to get to where you want to go, so start asking yourself where you want to go. n Let go of anger toward ex-lovers and family. We all deserve happiness and love; just because it is over doesn’t mean the love was wrong.
n Let go of the need to do more and be more; for today, you’ve done the best you can, and that’s enough. n Let go of thinking you have to know how to make it happen; we learn the way on the way. n Let go of your money woes. Make a plan to pay off debt and focus on your abundance. n Let go of trying to save or change people. Everyone has his or her own path, and the best thing you can do is work on yourself and stop focusing on others. n Let go of trying to fit in and be accepted by everyone. Your uniqueness is what makes you outstanding. n Let go of self-hate. You are not the shape of your body or the number on the scale. Who you are matters, and the world needs you as you are. Celebrate you! While the year changing doesn’t change everything that’s going on in the world, we do have the opportunity to start fresh. Let’s go into this New Year with a refreshed look on how we treat ourselves and how we treat each other. Until we see each other again, be safe, be well and be kind.

CAPTURING
THE COMMUNITY Baldwin Park resident Tonio Bianca’s primary business is in real estate, but he also enjoys helping others through his talents behind the lens. DANIELLE HENDRIX ASSOCIATE EDITOR
T
onio Bianca has a knack for capturing just the right moments around the community. Bianca, a partner with Munkberg Bianca Group and a Baldwin Park resident, has a background in digital marketing and real estate. Five years ago, though, he discovered a love for photography. His curiosity surrounding the art of photography was the result of a combination of things: an affinity for landscape photography, a desire to capture priceless moments with his family, and the opportunity for business-related photography. “I figured … I could use the camera for multiple purposes between me wanting to pick up a new hobby and then also helping our primary business out,” he says. “All the reasons kept pointing in the right direction and said, ‘Hey, why don’t you get a camera and see if maybe you’d be any good at it?’” Bianca bought a Nikon D5500 and began collecting various lenses along the way. Typically, he uses the Tokina 11-to-16mm lens, although his 35mm lens is another go-to piece
16

of glass. He hopes to be able to upgrade his camera to a mirrorless model soon. “There’s a big misconception within photography that you need super expensive gear to take good photos — that’s not really the case,” he says. “Cell phone photos are now starting to look better and better. It’s more about composition than anything, and also, it’s in the eyes of the beholder. If you like the picture you took, then that’s awesome. That’s all that matters.” For Bianca, his hobby has become a creative outlet aside from his primary business. He’s captured family trips to places like Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, as well as precious moments with his daughter.
BOLSTERING BUSINESS
You’ve also likely seen his work on Baldwin Park social media pages or in the weekly resident e-blast. Bianca takes stunning photos of sunrises and sunsets on the lake, brings landscapes to life, and showcases local businesses through both photography and videography. The latter is something for which he holds a special passion, particularly with the impacts local businesses have felt from the COVID-19 pandemic. “It just seems like something that tied in really well with not only our primary business as far as real estate goes, but also, the better the small businesses in our community and on New Broad do, the better off it is for everybody,” he says. “And it brings a lot of residents together;
maybe it sheds some light on a new business that they might not know about.” For the past few years, Bianca has found joy in helping local businesses amplify their presence through photoshoots and video shoots. The content, he says, depends on each business owner’s specific vision. Toward the beginning of the pandemic, he says, many businesses wanted videos and photos that showcased the safety measures they were taking to protect residents and employees. In the ever-changing COVID-19 landscape, business’ needs and messages shift. “At the very beginning of the year in April and May when everything first shut down, coming out of that it was more about safety protocol and what the businesses were doing to protect residents and their health,” he says. “Now, it’s little bit more about maybe socially safe popup events that they’re doing. … It’s different from business to business,
duce them and the products and services they have to offer. Mixed in were beautiful aerial and landscape shots from around Baldwin Park. “I love the message; I love the shots that we got,” he says. “All the business owners kind of came together to really help make that happen.” Such content is even more relevant in a year that has not been kind to small-business owners. “This is the perfect opportunity to leverage the photo and video stuff that I’m doing to help out the other small businesses,” Bianca says. “Helping them with the marketing edge, I think, has been just really rewarding for us — for myself and (wife) Christina to do for them. … It’s been really tough on a lot of the small businesses, and I think it’s such a core part of Baldwin Park. Anything we can do to help promote them and get people out to keep supporting them if they’re able is one of the overarching goals we have right now. “Being able to go and create photos and videos that have a positive impact not only on the community but for the small businesses here, that’s something that I take a lot of joy in and have a lot of fun with,” he says.
Tonio Bianca captured this stunning sunrise over Lake Baldwin in August.
MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER Tonio Bianca has been a Baldwin Park resident since 2011. He and his wife, Christina Munkberg Bianca, own Munkberg Bianca Group. Bianca also took this edition’s cover photo. He has done photography and videography work for various clients, neighbors and Baldwin Park businesses. For more, email Bianca at tonio@BarnettRealtyPM.com. Above all, photography has served Bianca well as his creative outlet. Although he and his family have lived in Baldwin Park since 2011, there never is a shortage of content to create or scenery to take in from behind the lens. “Since I’ve taken up photography, there’s plenty of great backdrops in the neighborhood to photograph,” he says. “We live here, and I can walk down to the lake and photograph a sunrise, but it’s also just … a beautiful neighborhood. We love the neighborhood, and we couldn’t picture ourselves living anywhere else. Editing the photos (is fun), too. It’s cool to create something that you love yourself, but it’s also fun to create something a lot of people will find enjoyment in. That’s what I’m starting to kind of hone in on more.”

appy New Year! I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Because I’m convinced that 2021 will be a year of happiness for millions of people who have, for the majority of 2020, allowed themselves time for reflection. Reflection is so much more than agonizing about how much Netflix we’ve watched in the past 10 months or how many calories we consume in a day. True reflection is an authentic eye on our innermost soul. It reveals our ethics when no one else is watching. Reflection is the observation on how our lives are clipping along with either a sense of excitement or a feeling of dread. It’s how we decide to look at that proverbial glass — half empty or half full. Reflection does not count how many friends we have, but measures how valuable we are to our friends. Reflection is a true assessment of whether or not we are heading in the right direction in terms of our work, our relationships and our life’s mission. Reflection work is self-inquiry. It not only takes a good hard look at where we’ve been but also gives us a whopper of an insight on how to move forward. A tumultuous 2020 has caused so many of us to stop in our own tracks. We’ve changed as a society. Right here, even here in our own Baldwin Park bubble, we’ve
made some pretty big shifts — wearing masks to shop, staying 6 feet apart from our closest friends and neighbors, resisting the temptation to stop on the sidewalk for casual conversations with strangers and their dogs. We adapted to one-way grocery aisles at Publix. Beyond adaption came kindness and actions of compassion. We’re helping our neighbors with offers to run to the grocery store, we’re shopping local, we’re watching our neighbor’s porches for a package. We’re making our own little corner of the world a better place. There is a parable I love about a monk who carried two water pails up a hill every day. The pail in the monk’s right hand had several leaks, but he filled it up with water anyway and trudged up the hill. One day, a passerby asked why he bothered with the leaky pail. He replied, “See all the beautiful wildflowers to my right? If not for the brokenness of this pail, there would not have been water for the seeds, which are now flowers.” Out of brokenness comes rare beauty. This leads to the second essential element for a happy new year — gratitude. Podcaster and non-fiction author Jay Shetty, in his recent book “Think Like a Monk,” reminds us that we cannot feel gratitude and negative feelings in the same moment.

So, he says, we should choose gratitude. Some people find it easy to keep a bedside gratitude journal, jotting down the things they feel grateful for. Others wake up and think of five things they’re grateful for before getting out of bed. One of the best ways to feel grateful is to express thanks. Try amping up your expressions of thanks in every moment. Thank your spouse for putting sheets on the bed, thank your barista for brightening your day. Thank your children for being helpful and kind. Thank your cat for sleeping on your computer keyboard and making you laugh. Be thankful for the cup you’re drinking from, the water you shower in, the car you drive, the shoes you wear. Be grateful for this beautiful neighborhood we live in. Finally, create a vision for 2021. Start with some reflection and gratitude. Write freeform style everything that came to mind during the worst of the COVID months, about what you want to do, where you want to travel, who you want to hug again. Then, make your very own vision board with leadership and vision board coach Regena Garrepy, via Zoom, on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Reach out to me at lifestyledirector@baldwinparkpoa.com for the Zoom link to this interactive, fun, free program. What a way to start the New Year. Garrepy says she’s excited to share this uplifting tool with her fellow residents of Baldwin Park. I’m excited, too. It’s going to be a great year! 2021, we welcome you with open arms and a grateful heart!

hroughout life — and in the society we find ourselves in — it can be tough at times to live life with a positive outlook and let go of limiting beliefs. That’s exactly where the ThetaHealing technique comes in, and Baldwin Park resident Damir Plazibat can help. Plazibat’s practice is called AscendancyCo, and he is able to help his clients using the quantum approach of ThetaHealing. Created by Vianna Stibal in 1995, ThetaHealing is both a meditation technique and spiritual philosophy. It is not tied to one specific religion but rather accepts from them all. The purpose of this technique, according to its website, is “getting closer to the Creator.” Essentially, ThetaHealing serves as a training method for the mind, body and spirit that allows one to clear limiting beliefs and live life with positive thoughts. It’s always taught to be used in conjunction with conventional medicine. Practitioners and instructors of ThetaHealing say it teaches people to develop natural intuition through changing their brain-wave cycle to the theta waves. The intention lies in exploring how emo-

tional energy can affect a person’s health. A friend of Plazibat’s introduced him to the technique a few years ago. He thought it was fascinating to learn more about himself and the essence of his reality. Born in Croatia, Plazibat moved to the United States in his early 20s and lived in both Connecticut and New York before planting roots in Baldwin Park. He is a veteran of the Croatian military and also has a background in the medical industry, so helping others is something he finds rewarding. Now, he’s helping people in a different manner. “I’ve always been interested in everything that we’re unable to see with our eyes,” he says. “It’s got to be something, whatever it is. And people give it many different names — from God to angels and this or that — all kinds of things. We can experience and perceive things, but more often than not, as humans in the society we live in … our parents teach us things, our grandparents, things like that. So it’s very easy to adopt those beliefs, whatever it may be.” ThetaHealing and its virtues stood out because of its commitment to helping people and understanding how everyone perceives their reality to be. Plazibat began studying the technique and learning from others.
“I started learning about myself and sort of the essence of my reality — ‘Who am I, where did I come from?’ and things for that nature,” he says. “Throughout all these processes of learning and attending seminars, meditating at home, one starts to learn and open up and start perceiving things that previously I either did not perceive or I did not recognize it.” A typical ThetaHealing session begins with the practitioner sitting directly opposite the client. The practitioner listens to his or her client and using probing questions before asking permission to be connected to the client’s energy. Sessions can also be conducted through telephone or over the internet. “It is a very normal conversation,” Plazibat says. “A person can say anything. They can start off talking like, ‘OK, this is what’s happening in my life.’ Someone may say, ‘Let’s look at this and see why it’s like that.’ It can be anything at all. Most of the time, people tend to share emotional stuff: ‘I’ve been feeling like this,’ or “I have a fear of this,’ or Why am I stuck at my job?’ … We can take a look at that and see what’s going on.” Plazibat asks clients’ permission to connect to their energy before asking about their intentions and desired focus. According to ThetaHealing’s website, a typical appointment includes an intuitive scan, belief work and a healing. The concept might feel abstract, but Plazibat explains it as using applied quantum physics to achieve remarkable shifts in his clientele. In fact, many clients have praised Plazibat for his work in helping them move through blocks and work with their energy. The tangible changes he sees in his clients is what makes it all worth it. “To see, to observe, to feel the transformation that people have each time is very gratifying,” he says. “It’s very simple in terms of why. Doing something, engaging in some type of activity that makes other people feel better, to observe that transformation (is rewarding).”

hat a wild year 2020 has been. Or, in the case of many who have been relegated to working from home and making Target runs or grocery shopping their big weekly outings, what a boring year it has been! Everyone is spending more time at home these days, and as a result, home sales are strong — as are the sales of home-improvement and design items. It’s been a year filled with uncertainty and challenges. The old ways of doing things have rapidly been transformed into new ones, placing both innovation and nostalgia at the forefront of how we live. Home design is starting to reflect our desire for the cozy, comfortable days when things were more predictable and secure. At the same time, technology roars on into the future. Our houses are as smart as we are, and automation takes away decision fatigue and makes living in a postCOVID world easier. Easier is just better these days. So, what will the new design trends be in 2021 and beyond? Let’s take a look, starting with Pantone’s 2021 color of the year.
ILLUMINATING AND ULTIMATE GRAY Pantone is shining a light on optimism and hope with their sunny, cheery, yellow “Illuminating.” But they didn’t just choose this ray of sunshine; they added “Ultimate Gray” to complement and add balance. TIME magazine quotes Pantone as selecting these colors for their ability to convey both strength and hopefulness at the same time. Stability and hope? Sounds like a perfect prescription
24
BALDWIN PARK LIVING | JANUARY 2021
for the pandemic blues of this past year. TIME goes on to state that Laurie Pressman, Pantone vice president, wanted to include two colors to emphasize humanity’s need for connectedness and relationships. Interesting and very true. The forced isolation this year has brought has shone a light on the value of those we surround ourselves with and how much people — even us introverts — really need other people in our lives. I like to think I was ahead of this trend when I painted my childhood bedroom in the Dr. Phillips subdivision of Orange Tree sunshine yellow. Hey, a little ray of sunshine is never a bad thing. This is a trend we can add in small doses to really light up our spaces or go all in on and add to our walls. Is the avocado green of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s coming back, too? We’ll see!
GRANDMILLENIAL/ GRANNY CHIC IS BACK! What is “Granny Chic” exactly, you ask? It’s just what you think it is — wallpaper and doilies included! Insider quotes Heather Goerzen, interior designer with Havenly, as describing it as the comeback of homey trends you may have first seen in a grandparent’s home: antiques, crochet, wallpaper. I’ve seen more wallpaper for a few years now, and this is a great way to “Granny Chic” a home. Try a home office or a guest bedroom and go from there. Fun fact: peeland-stick wallpaper is hotter than ever, and a noncommittal way to try the trend. It’s all about making the old new again and bringing back those nostalgic feelings from happier times. You can find ways
to showcase some fine china or family heirlooms, perhaps even a lovely hanging macrame piece to add texture and charm to your home. Sorry, minimalists: Cold is on its way out, and cozy is back in. You don’t have to clutter a space with dozens of tchotchkes, however; just personalize in a way that feels right to you.
MATCHY-MATCHY WILL BE IN THE PAST Insider also mentions the decline of perfectly matched sets of furnishings. Replacing the soulless trend of cookie-cutter furniture is the rise of individualism and a more personal take on style. Think carefully curated finds at antique shops combined with distinctive designer pieces. Vintage is more environmentally friendly, as well, making Mother Earth happy, too. And although your furniture may not be matching in the future, it looks like your walls will be. Insider also predicts accent walls will be thing of the past with monochromatic paint taking over. The more modern way to style your walls will be allowing the things in a room to be the accents — for example, a great chair or a blown-glass chandelier. Another way to personalize a home is to add plants! Post-lockdown life has seen rise to plant culture, and adding some greenery to your home adds visual interest — as well as better air quality — so you can’t lose! If you’re like me and lacking a green thumb, there are plenty of plant kings and queens on Instagram showing you how to live your best plant-filled home life, so never fear.

ORLANDO BALLOON GLOW IN BALDWIN PARK As spectators watched in awe, flickering flames from hot-air balloons cast a dim glow over Blue Jacket Park as they slowly ascended. The Orlando Ballon Glow returned to the area Dec. 3 through 6, showcasing nearly a dozen hot-air balloons. Spectators could purchase tickets for tethered rides, peruse various food vendors or simply enjoy watching the balloons. Some balloons were multicolored, while others in appearance included the iconic RE/ MAX balloon, Tweety Bird and a snowman.
