WHO WAS RUBE GOLDBERG? Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor best known for his cartoons that depicted complicated gadgets performing simple tasks in convoluted ways. A Rube Goldberg machine is a device that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated fashion.
After their machine didn’t work the first time, Windy Ridge School’s Keira Moran, Haven Melton, Madison Modlin and Addison Stump were able to make adjustments. Finally, on the third try, their machine worked.

undreds of people gathered at Windermere Town Hall Jan. 30 for the third annual Windermere Wine & Dine event. More than 25 of Central Florida’s top restaurants were present and served their specialty dishes, and more than 120 fine wines were offered to taste. Additionally, a silent auction was held in the Town Hall
building, where guests could use electronic devices to bid on dozens of items and packages, all for a good cause. The money raised from the event will be turned over to the town of Windermere, which will hear ideas from several groups and in turn decide where the funds raised will be allocated.

the western end of the Beachline (State Road 528) on the western side of Turkey Lake Road is a set of more than 1,000 timeshare units in the 179.4-gross-acre Sand Lake Resort Club Planned Development. VHB Inc. officials presented their request to add 10,000 feet of commercial space and 107 timeshare units to their current maximum of 1,261 units to the club at a community meeting Jan. 27 at Dr. Phillips High School. Jim Hall offered a brief presentation of VHB Inc.’s plans, mainly consisting of tearing down an old building to make room for two new buildings with more units. He said these buildings — the last to be built for this site — would be closer to the southeastern shore of Big Sand Lake, which the parcel abuts roughly a half-mile south of Dr. P. Phillips Hospital. But the added commercial space — for retail or comestible sales — would be near a parking garage away from the lake in a northern corner of the property, Hall said. Resident Paul McGarigal suggested deceleration turn lanes for both right turns and left turns into that part of the property, which officials said they would consider. An employee at Sand Lake Medical Park just to the north asked club officials to monitor drivers taking limited parking in the medical park instead of on club property. A club representative agreed, saying attendees should not have a need to park off-site. Hall said each of the two buildings should take about 17 months to construct, with August as a goal to start. A discussion of the number of proposed and existing timeshares in the vicinity ensued, leading to District 1 County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd explaining how reduced densities in most of those projects would make use of land without adding as much traffic. Residents expressed dissatisfaction with county traffic counts’ indication of traffic being available in that area, noting it does not accurately depict their reality and that this timeshare expansion would increase traffic. Boyd offered an update on a nearby plan to alleviate congestion — the Daryl Carter Parkway Interstate 4 half-interchange. He said the current stage was looking to neighboring property owners for right-of-way, but the project remains several years away. Hall mentioned a road that would go straight to Walt Disney World from the Dr. Phillips area, so mouse-bound traffic would never hit South Apopka-Vineland Road. Students engage in brain battle
WINDERMERE
Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1A
SYMMETRICAL SMILE The competition was so stress-filled and intense that one student lost a tooth in all the excitement. During lunch, Windy Ridge School fifthgrader Addison Stump felt her upper left cuspid begin to wiggle. Just a few minutes later, it came out completely. “It wasn’t even loose before today,” she said. With the missing tooth, her smile is now symmetrical once again — her upper right cuspid already was missing.
Can you do it by touching only one piece? Can you do it in a predetermined-sized space? And can you do it while incorporating at least three simple machines (see sidebar)? Oh — and perhaps most importantly — can you do it while the judges are standing there watching? The tension was palpable as elementary-age students from throughout the school district tried to do just that and more at the 2016 STEM/Rube Goldberg Challenge, held Jan. 30 at West Orange High School. More than 400 students and coaches representing nearly 30 schools participated in this year’s challenge. The idea was the brainchild of Keene’s Crossing Elementary Principal Sherry Donaldson and STEM teacher Sandra Hoffman, who launched the competition two years ago. “We found (through our science fairs) that there was not a whole lot of depth in the projects,” Donaldson said. “We wanted (the students) to be more involved, to be building things. We wanted there to be a bigger learning component.” In 2015, its first year as a district event, the competition featured 56 teams from schools throughout the county. One year later, 86 teams signed up, and organizers moved the competition to West Orange High to accommodate. Inspired by the American cartoonist, engineer and inventor of the same name, the Rube Goldberg Challenge tasks teams with building complex, sometimes convoluted, machines out of household recyclables and other

items (spending no more than $10) that complete a given task. A panel of judges evaluates each machine to make sure it satisfies a litany of parameters, and then the students are given three attempts to make the machine work. Along with the actual machine, each team also kept a journal to record its creation process. For the book-opening challenge, Windy Ridge School fifthgraders Keira Moran, Haven Melton, Madison Modlin and Addison Stump built a machine called “Rube Goldberg’s Dictionary” that began with a turn of a screw and ended — 18 steps later — with opening a copy of Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary. In between, the girls, along with coach Paul Modlin, incorporated balloons, eggs, a toy car, string, a pencil and many more items that acted as inclined planes, wedges, pulleys and other simple machines. Donaldson said she hopes to see

and cups. Each church will host a dinner and dance, karaoke, a photo booth, a live DJ, limo rides, a hair and makeup section and a shoe-shining section. And when guests check in at registration, each will receive a crown or tiara and a corsage or boutonniere. “They’ll be on the red carpet where they’ll be greeted by welcoming paparazzi that will take their photos, and we’ll have those provided for the foundation after,” Cromwell said. “They’ll go into the room, and we will have appetizers and refreshments and desserts for the guests, minding all of their dietary restrictions. The dance floor will be open and we’ll have karaoke and we’ll have a respite room for their caregivers, so they don’t have to leave if they don’t feel comfortable leaving.” To be a host for Night to Shine, churches have to go through
an application process through the foundation, which will then determine whether a need is in the community and churches have appropriate facilities and are willing to stick with the planning. “When I heard about Night to Shine, I was like, ‘Let’s do it,’” Cromwell said. “I went to the pastor and was like, ‘Can we host this?’ And he absolutely was on board. … We do have an individual in our church family who’s actually one of our ushers but he has Down syndrome. He loves to dance, he loves to sing and he’s definitely part of our family, and I was like, ‘This is a night for him.’” First Baptist Church of Windermere, which has a special-needs ministry called A.C.C.E.P.T., also was chosen to host the event after Senior Pastor Chuck Carter applied. “Our senior pastor has a son with autism who has aged out of the school system, and he really enjoyed the prom that he had throughout his high-school career, and he talks about it all the time,” said Denise Burch, A.C.C.E.P.T. ministry director. “His mom had been online and discovered Night to Shine and thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we could do it at our church?’ Unbeknownst to her, the senior pastor applied for it … and lo and behold, we were awarded to host it, so we’re really excited.” Cromwell said she is most looking forward to seeing the looks on guests’ faces when they arrive on

Police Chief Dave Ogden — who operates a Clermont Brazilian JiuJitsu dojo — asked his network of fellow BJJ black belts whether they could help him with a charitable seminar, he was unsure of what to expect. “I’ve been with this group for close to 20 years now,” Ogden said of that network. “I have asked these guys to get together ... and it’s pretty amazing. Truly, if you go over all of Central Florida within several counties, there’s probably not more than 50 to 75 legitimate black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.” But more than 20 BJJ black belts overwhelmed Ogden by agreeing to teach BJJ seminars Saturday at Gracie Barra Orlando. They will raise funds for families affected by Tay-Sachs disease, a rare inherited disorder that progressively destroys brain and spinal neurons until death, as it did in Ogden’s son, Kaleb, for his barely
four years of life — longer than most with Sandhoff disease, a severe form. Money will go to trips to SeaWorld and the Orlando Science Center for families affected by Tay-Sachs, who will converge on Orlando April 7 to 10 for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association’s 38th Annual Family Conference. “We want to take them just for a great weekend,” Ogden said. “We want to pay for it all. A lot of these families use this family conference once a year (as) their only vacation. … I just wanted to make it special for the kids who have to deal with this issue all year long, living with a terminally-ill child.”
Ogden said. “In the ‘90s, it was brought to the United States … Back then, you actually had competitions where people fought all day long — and beat everybody — by this unknown art called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, using the leverage and ground-fighting skills and manipulating that.” Ogden has created BJJ curricula to train officers from Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Windermere Police Department and other organizations around Florida. For information on Tay-Sachs, visit ntsad.org. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.
FROM CAGE-FIGHTING TO POLICE
Among the patriarchs of BJJ is Carlos Gracie, who with his family developed BJJ in the early 20th century as a judo adaptation focused on ground fighting. “This helped a smaller individual overcome a bigger opponent,”

“My major life goal is to see the world. I love learning about other cultures, and I also want to become fluent in another language. Thankfully, joining the military will help me achieve these goals.” — Kristen McKenney
Kristen McKenney graduates from West Orange High School in May, she will already have her future mapped out. The month after she receives her high school diploma, she will begin the six-week basic cadet training as a member of the Class of 2020 at the United States Air Force Academy. “My major life goal is to see the world,” McKenney said. “I love learning about other cultures, and I also want to become fluent in another language. Thankfully, joining the military will help me achieve these goals.” The military academy for officer candidates for the U.S. Air Force is north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado. McKenney, of Windermere, learned Dec. 17 she had been accepted, first with an earlymorning email and then a phone call from Sen. Bill Nelson’s office congratulating her. Getting accepted into the program is an arduous process. The first step is to receive a nomina-
tion, and she applied to the offices of U.S. Rep. Daniel Webster, Sen. Marco Rubio and Nelson. “Each of the applications was like their own separate college application,” McKenney said. “After my applications were reviewed, I then had to interview before three different boards, which ranged in size from three to nine people.” The application to the academy is an entirely separate process from the nomination process, and she started during her junior year. “I had to pass several medical exams, take a physical fitness test that consisted of push-ups, pullups, sit-ups, a shuttle run, a basketball throw and a mile run,” she said. “This is on top of the regular things found in a college application such as essays, test scores and inputting all of my academic and extracurricular information.” It was last fall that she received nominations from Nelson, Webster and the Air Force Junior ROTC. her family to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. Both her father and grandfather graduated from there, as well, in the 1960s and ’90s. “My father and grandfather both had very different experiences at the academy, and I’m sure my experience will be very different from theirs,” McKenney said. Her grandfather, retired Col. Wayne McKenney, was a member of the Class of 1964, which was the fifth class to go through the academy. “When he went there, girls were not allowed to attend, and he didn’t leave campus at all during his first year,” she said. “He made the military a career, first flying F-4s in Vietnam, then A-10s in Europe during the Cold War, and then he flew F-16s in Korea in the 80s. He retired in 1991.” Her dad, David McKenney, was a member of the Class of 1992. By then, females were allowed into
the academy. “And he was allowed to go to his sponsor family’s house some weekends,” she said. “My dad taught other cadets how to fly gliders when he was there.” McKenney is eager to start this new chapter in her life and is ready for the commitment to serve her country. “A lot of my friends are immigrants, and some of the stories about the injustices in their home countries really motivated me to defend the freedoms that we have as American citizens,” she said. McKenney said she is appreciative of her parents and all of her teachers and administrators for their tremendous support. “It took a lot of work to apply, and they’ve been with me every step of the way,” she said. “I couldn’t be more grateful.” Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@orangeobserver.com.

While waiting for the tire I went to Plant Street Market and had a beer at Crooked Can, got a hot butcher sandwich from the butcher shop — amazing sandwich that was well worth the price. Bought sausage and ground beef. Then picked up organic marinara sauce and herb pasta and made my way down to pick up mini baguettes to go with it. Maybe I paid a little more, but the quality and service was good, and I helped a local business. The next day, my wife and I went to Douce France (Bakery) for some croissants and french bread for dinner. … It was worth every penny to shop local.”

“Painting — you just have to kind of feel it,” Hungerford said. “It just comes out; it’s all emotion. You can see in someone’s art what they were feeling at the time.” The difficulty of painting windows? It’s translucent, so people inside get to watch her dance as she paints. “I like my lunch and show,” someone recently joked to her while leaving Winter Garden Pizza Company. HOW IT BEGAN
Hungerford, a Winter Garden resident, is the owner of Panache Events, a company that started out hosting events for restaurants. Work was hard in the beginning. She struggled to get paid for her work, and the challenging job kept her away from her two young children, Kincade and Jackson Paul. When she found out Jackson Paul had special needs, the pull to be home became even stronger. Wanting to make a change, she headed to Winter Garden Pizza Company in February 2015 and presented the idea of teaching a class on how to paint wine glasses. After some convincing, Hungerford hosted her first class there. Seventy-five people showed up. “My husband had to run to the store and go get more wine glasses because I only brought 25,” she said. “I didn’t think anyone was going to come.” Each month, the class kept growing. It’s good business for Winter Garden Pizza Company,
because visitors usually purchase dinner during the class. “She draws a big crowd every time she does it here,” said Debbie Liskey, a manager at Winter Garden Pizza Company. “We love her.” The class is intended to provide a night out for moms such as Hungerford at a reasonable cost — $15 per person. Hungerford also hosts parties for kids and other businesses. Word began to spread about Hungerford’s classes and her work. She teaches other classes out of state in Louisiana, California and Amelia Island. But it’s all grown by word of mouth. “Women love to talk,” Hungerford said. “Everyone was having such a wonderful time at these events.” Window art also started at Winter Garden Pizza Company, and as word spread, she has taken on more projects in the area. Much of her recognition has come through the Facebook group Winter Garden — Rants, Raves and Reviews, where Hungerford has been a member since the page had only 200 members. “I’ve made so many friends through that page, and it has done so much for my business,” she said. “I love that I’m kind of Winter Garden’s artist — I hate to say that, but it feels good.” The interest in Hungerford’s work has been so strong that she is able to work while also homeschooling her kids — exactly what she hoped for when she began.

WEST ORANGE OBITUARIES OLIN RICHARD PAUL FISCHER
JENNIFER NESSLAR
OF WEST ORANGE COUNTY, DIED JAN. 26
Olin Richard Paul Fischer was gathered to God on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016. Born April 22, 1919, Olin was a lifelong resident of West Orange County, Florida. Always involved in the citrus industry, he planted his first orange grove when he was 17 years old on three acres of land he purchased from his father in Gotha, Florida. Through the years, he accumulated more property and, through hard work, skill and dedication, developed a successful citrus business. Olin was twice married, first to Hazel Gray, from 1940 to 1958, then to Virginia Culbreth from 1960 to until his death in 2016. A loving husband and father, Olin cared deeply for his family, their wellbeing and most especially their spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. Out of all his accomplishments and successes, the one of which he was most proud was that he taught his children to pray and shared with them the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. As a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Olin was very active and faithful in both his worship attendance and in the ongoing activities and business of the congregation, serving on

rian Church is now Quest Church. The name change reflects a desire to accurately describe the church, not a departure from the Presbyterian Church (USA) with which the church still strongly identifies. The change began when a consultant came to evaluate the church, and the name was the first thing he pointed out. The original name, selected in the 1960s, does not reflect the church present-day style. The church is contemporary: Saturday worship services are “café style,” where attendees sit at tables and enjoy drinks and snacks during the service. The church has a worship band rather than a choir, and uses drama and video in services. “It’s just not a traditional kind of Presbyterian church,” said Bryan Stamper, the pastor of Quest Church. “(The consultant) said, ‘The name implies something that you are not. So somebody who’s looking for what you do; they’ll never walk in the door. And somebody who sees your name and walks in the door will be surprised at what they encounter.’” The church, which borders Gotha, is still affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), but Stamper said the church is doing what many area community churches already have done — move away from identifying a denomination in the name of the

church. First Baptist Church of Oviedo now identifies as CrossLife Church, and First Baptist Church of Central Florida now goes by Church at the Cross. “Brand loyalty is just not an issue anymore,” said Stamper, who considers himself a fan of the Presbyterian church. “We found here that when you develop a person spiritually in the basics of the faith, they make a great Presbyterian,” Stamper said. “But when you develop somebody as a Presbyterian, that doesn’t necessarily make them a great believer.” Quest isn’t trying to reach the Presbyterian as much as it is geared toward those who don’t currently identify with a church, and Stamper feels the new name will appeal more to non-churchgoers.
WHAT’S IN A NAME? Members of St. Pauls Presbyterian Church got together to discuss the church and its nature. After this exercise, they began to think of names and post them for everyone in attendance to see. The name “Quest” appeared more than a dozen times. “Quest” means to search and reflects the faith journey. In the Bible, followers of Jesus are portrayed as sheep, which are always moving and following the Shepherd. They are also referred to as pilgrims — all terms symbolic of a journey.

hen the Olympia Titans girls lacrosse team takes the field Feb. 8 for its regular-season opener, the team will be playing for its third coach in as many seasons. Normally, that kind of turnover results in a lack of cohesion that manifests itself in losses.
Bucking that trend, the Titans are hopeful they will advance to the FHSAA State Semifinals for a third time in as many years. Led by a talented, experienced senior class, Olympia may not miss a beat. “They’re the key to the season,” head coach Chip Carbiener said of the Titans’ seven seniors. Carbiener has been involved with the program at Olympia since his own children, Wayne

Titans tops Panthers for second district title
SPONSORED BY SHANNON TILL STATE FARM IN FOWLER GROVES
Jordin Ferguson Jordin Ferguson helped Dr. Phillips to conference, district and regional titles including a region-topping 139-pound-class score of 290 Jan. 21 in Lakeland. She will compete for a state title this weekend at the Kissimmee Civic Center.
How did you get involved in weightlifting? The team for the school — my freshman year — they wanted me to try it, and I didn’t know if I wanted to. My dad’s a bodybuilder, and I do that with him and compete with that. Once I got on the actual team, I loved it. The girls really were motivating. Learning how strong you can be, especially as a female, it’s really cool walking around school with other females (saying), “Oh, I want to be strong like you,” or guys (saying), “I’m afraid of you” and stuff. It’s really cool, and I think my favorite part about it is not just lifting but the bond you get and being able to do something better than a guy. Do you have a favorite type of lift? If it has to be for what we compete in, it’d have to be the clean-and-jerk, but more specifically the jerk. For me, cleans are a struggle, but (the jerk portion of the lift) is cool: Throwing it above your head, you can feel your core muscles and your back muscles. What are some hobbies when you’re not so busy? I love football. Growing up, I always played with my broth-

ers and their friends. I do the girls’ flag football, too, here. One of my things is with my dad we’d always play catch or run routes or just play football. I guess athletic training, like sports medicine, helping out with football or whatever sport I’m assigned to — I like helping athletes. Is that something you’re interested in pursuing? Yeah, I want to major in sports medicine, and then I’m going to minor in nutrition, because with bodybuilding and how the body works, it’s a lot more than meatheads. Actually, it’s a lot of science behind it, because you have to actually know what muscle you’re doing. What is dual enrollment here and at Valencia College like? I technically don’t have to come here at all. I only come here for practice, sports and stuff, because I only need three more credits to graduate. But the way I set it up is I’m going to get my (associate) degree and my highschool diploma at the same time, so when I go to college, I can start my major right away. What would you have for your dream meal? My favorite food — I love any kind of steak or meaty meat. Chicken I eat because it’s lean and I have to, but I would get a pork sandwich with onions and mushrooms and a special sauce with mashed potatoes. And then as a side dish, I would get little short ribs — I don’t know if that’s a side dish, but I would get that. And then dessert is probably anything with Nutella. I’d make up my own gourmet donut: The cream would be Nutellaflavored, with peanut butter, in a sandwich with chocolate on top. I probably would throw up after eating it!
The second meeting this season of the Olympia and Dr. Phillips girls basketball teams, coming this time Jan. 29 in the Class 8A, District 5 final, was quite a bit different than the first meeting just two weeks earlier. For starters, 37 fewer points were scored. There also was a different winner. Unlike the Nov. 12 contest that in which the Panthers cruised to a 60-41 win, the Titans (15-12) came out on top in the district championship, 36-28. The victory marks the second consecutive district championship for Olympia; also its third in four years (the Titans won their district in 2013 under current Athletic Director Lauren

arose at Lynchburg College. Although the turnover has caused some concern, the Titans’ senior class — Ashley Matthews, Brittney Matthews, Kimberly Goic, Jenna Kuka, Hannah Fidelo, Bri Stokes and new addition Karina Santiago — has a level of maturity that has caused Carbiener to muse the girls might still do well without any coach. “Yeah, the coach helps, obviously — but we have that hunger inside,” Goic said. “We want to win state every year.” There is also some benefit from Carbiener not being an entirely new face.

er room after the game is, ‘This is the first time we’ve been here — this is the first time we’ve done this as a program in school history,’” Dyer said. The Lakers were led by another strong effort from the young roster’s only senior, Kelly Rowswell. Rowswell, who earlier this season scored a school-record 43 points, recorded a game-high 26 points Thursday night in the program’s first appearance in a district championship. “Kelly is an unreal athlete — she is a kid who doesn’t come around very often,” Dyer said. The contest was close from start to finish. The Lions led by two points at the half and just one point at the end of the third quarter, with Windermere Prep

“We all know coach Chip, so it’s not that different,” Goic said. “We all know he loves us and wants the best for us.” The coaching situation may even have an upside. Although similar, each coach has his or her own points of focus, and Ashley Matthews said she and her teammates have learned a wellrounded approach as a result. “Coach Brooke — she was really straight to the point,” Ashley Matthews said. “With Elyse, we had a lot of options (strategically during the game) and a lot of different ways to do things. Coach Chip — he’s all about speed. That’s his quote, ‘Speed kills.’” Things will pick up early for the
Titans, who on Feb. 10 will face Ponte Vedra — the team that has ended Olympia’s season the past two years in the state semifinals. And, while underclassmen such as Finley Cassidy and Riley Reagan certainly will play a role in the squad’s success, it will be incumbent upon the the senior class to navigate the tough schedule Carbiener put together. “Every team takes on the personality of their seniors,” Carbiener said. “(This year’s seniors) rely on their lacrosse sense and their experience of having played in a lot of big games.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

Both teams will play in the regional quarterfinals of the Class 3A State Tournament Feb. 4. Foundation will host Santa Fe Catholic (4-13), while Windermere Prep will hit the road to take on that district’s champion, Lakeland Christian (15-7). The Lakers took on the Vikings twice this season, falling Jan. 5 in a regular season meeting 57-31 and also Nov. 12, 55-28. Still, this team is not the same team it was even a few weeks ago. “From Oct. 28 to Jan. 28, the growth that this team has shown and the sacrifices they have made are unreal,” Dyer said. “To do what they’ve done in four

What you’re holding in your hands is the product of more than a year of planning. It’s the product of our wildest dreams — a bold step for a company that last month celebrated our 110th anniversary. Welcome, readers, to the first edition of the Windermere Observer, a sister paper of the West Orange Times & Observer, which has roots that date back to the Winter Garden Ricochet in 1905. For more than a century, our newspaper — through all its previous owners and iterations — covered the entire West Orange region with just one edition. Today, that changes. Put simply: West Orange has grown too large for one hyperlocal community newspaper. For longtime readers: this new Windermere Observer will cover Windermere, Horizon West, Dr. Phillips, Bay Hill, Gotha and MetroWest, while the West Orange Times & Observer will renew its focus on Winter Garden, Ocoee and Oakland. As the 10th newspaper owned by the Sarasota-based Observer Media Group, the Windermere Observer will strive to deliver on OMG’s slogan: “You. Your Neighbors. Your Neighborhood.”

Area seniors play way out of ‘sleeper’ status
STEVEN RYZEWSKI SIDELINE SCENE
On Aug. 28 — the day before the 2015 varsity football regular season kicked off — Olympia senior defensive back Jeff James had no scholarship offers. The naturally athletic Titans standout had no recruiting buzz. By now, though, James likely will have inked his name to a National Letter of Intent to play Division I football for the University of Miami. What a difference a few months can make. “Nobody knew about (James) — nobody knew about anyone on this team, because really, all these seniors are first-year starters,” Olympia head coach Kyle Hayes said. “It happened (for James) super fast — 10 weeks is not a long time to have a life-changing event like that.” That feeling of anonymity James might have experienced entering his senior season is something to which West Orange senior safety Ben Bollinger can relate. With no offers to begin the 2015 season, Olympia senior Jeff James played his way onto the University of Miami’s radar.
for the ball.” After injuries and other circumstances kept him from playing much, James was unleashed by Hayes and his staff this past fall and balled out to the tune of nine interceptions and five touchdowns as he also got reps at wide receiver. Miami, where James’ uncle — former NFL running back Edgerrin James — played his college ball, took notice. Meanwhile, Bollinger joined a team that was already loaded with Division 1 recruits and refused to be overlooked. In his one season in blue and orange, the safety was in on seemingly every tackle for the Warriors
and helped the West Orange defensive unit take a huge step forward. He was recognized by the Orlando Touchdown Club as its Defensive Player of the Year. Bollinger effectively ended his recruitment Tuesday evening, announcing his commitment to Air Force. Assuming he did sign his name to an NLI, it will have been a great day for the hardworking young man — the same as it likely was for James. Of course, it’s also a great day for the two schools who were able to reel in these former ‘sleepers.’

Springs for his senior season, Bollinger also had no recruiting buzz or offers. In fact, even after turning in stellar performances week after week for the Warriors en route to the state semifinals, the phones didn’t start ringing for Bollinger until after the season had concluded. Fortunately — for Bollinger and the schools who caught wind of what he might have to offer — the phone is ringing now. Offers from Southern Illinois and Georgetown were joined by Bollinger’s most recent offer that came Feb. 1 — this one from the Air Force Academy, his first Division I FBS offer. “I just had to trust in God and know that (recruiting) would pick up if I did my job,” Bollinger said, reflecting on the patience he had to have while waiting for his recruitment to pick up. “It’s felt good. I knew I had it in me all along, but it’s good finally seeing my hard work pay off.” In the age of Hudl highlight tapes and Twitter, an age where blue-chip recruits often have their first FBS offer before they have a permit to operate a motor vehicle, the two area standouts are proof that it’s never too late to make an impression. When Hayes took over the program at Olympia after the 2014 season, James stood out as a natural athlete with “a nose

It seems much of Justin Timberlake’s success as a solo artist came while he owned his Bay Hill home. According to Orange County Property Appraiser records, Justin Timberlake purchased the home in 1999 for $1,337,500. He owned the property until 2006, when he sold it for $2 million. Timberlake’s breakout solo album, “Justified,” was released in November 2002. He followed that release in 2006 with his hugely successful “FutureSex/LoveSounds,” which earned seven Grammy nominations.
he estate Justin Timberlake once called home has a new owner. The lakefront property, located at 8998 Hubbard Place in the Pointe Tibet community, sold Jan. 28 for $2.4 million. The furnished estate was an award-winner in the 2007 Parade of Homes. It features 5,357 square feet of living space, including a downstairs master suite, three additional en suite bedrooms, four full bathrooms, one halfbathroom, gourmet kitchen with custom cabinetry and Thermador Appliances, dual office/study, wine cellar with dual-temperature wine cooler, a second floor outdoor terrace overlooking Lake Tibet and climate-controlled indoor storage. The private backyard retreat includes a gas-heated pool and spa, boat dock and hoist, poolside fireplace, retractable screen enclosure, outdoor summer kitchen, residential misting systems and lighted 12-hole putting greens. Windermere Realtors Jeffrey and Renee Funk, of Realty Executives Central Florida, presented the property, which was under contract in 104 days. “The average days to contract in the Dr. Phillips/Windermere area for homes $2-plus million (in the last year) is 312 days,” Renee Funk said.

CenturyLink has announced that symmetrical broadband up to 1 gigabit per second will be available this month in Hamlin, Horizon West’s mixeduse town center developed by Boyd Development Corporation and Stratford Land. Beyond that, CenturyLink officials say it is the only Central Florida communications provider to offer 1 Gbps service in the West Orange County market. “We were the first communications provider to bring gigabit service to Central Florida in 2014, and we continue to look for opportunities to grow our gigabit footprint in these high-demand areas,” said Erik Genrich, CenturyLink vice president of operations for Central Florida. “We have thousands of homes and businesses already enabled with gigabit fiber, and we are proud to offer this next-generation technology to residential and smallbusiness customers in Hamlin.” Broadband services will be provided through CenturyLink’s fiber network, with access to some of the fastest upload and download Internet speeds currently available in the country, officials said. CenturyLink announced its 1 Gbps service launch in 2014 for residential and business customers in Orange, Seminole, Lake, Sumter, Osceola and Marion counties. Company leaders said Hamlin residents already were able to take advantage of CenturyLink’s voice, video and data services via the company’s robust fiber network. Speeds up to 1 Gbps — equivalent to 1,000 Mbps — allow users to stream high-definition video content with little or no delays and download movies, songs and TV shows in seconds, via CenturyLink fiber-to-the-premises technology. Hamlin customers
who have multiple devices connected to one Internet connection in the home will still have more than enough capacity and speed to support other uses of broadband, such as online gaming and home automation systems, officials said. “This advanced technology supports our goal to engage our community by providing great experiences, whether at home, in our town center and even while enjoying the many parks and trails throughout the development,” said Scott T. Boyd, president of Boyd Development Corporation. “CenturyLink’s gigabit Internet service will facilitate a wide variety of commercial, residential, mobile and wired applications that keep people connected to those who are important to them.” Celebration Associates Technology, an Orlando-based real estate technology advisory firm, led efforts to incorporate CenturyLink’s 1 Gbps, fiber-to-thehome service into this technology initiative. “Hamlin’s residents will be delighted by CenturyLink’s ultrafast Internet speeds,” said Amy Westwood, Celebration Associates principal technology adviser. “More and more homebuyers are choosing where they live based on access to high-speed Internet service, and the Boyd Development/Stratford Land team recognized the importance of this technology early on.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

Families Serving Families The Swindle family, owners of West Orange Roofing, have served the families of Central Florida for thirty-seven years. Bobby Swindle founded the business in 1978 to provide quality, affordable re-roofing and repairs. His son, Bobby Junior, now runs the business with his wife Kendra. “We get calls every day from families saying that Bobby’s dad put the roof on their house, and it was time to take another look,” Kendra said. “The best thing is when our customer’s kids call after they move into their own homes. It makes us feel good to know our good reputation spans generations.”

PROFESSIONAL CONNECTION
West Orange Roofing is one of the few roofers in Central Florida that is HAAG certified. If you suspect a problem with your roof, or if your roof has just reached fourteen years of age, call West Orange Roofing. Bobby or one of his staff will come out and inspect your roof. He’ll provide you with a free estimate and explain what, if anything, needs to be done to keep your home dry.
