fficers representing several police departments gathered together on Sunday, March 5, for the third annual Officer Robert “Robbie” German Charity Softball Tournament and Family Fun Day. Throughout the day, teams played against one another in a friendly rivalry, and all the proceeds benefited the Windermere Police Department Foundation. The tournament was created in memory of Robert German, the Windermere police officer who was killed in the line of duty on March 22, 2014. His family attended the tournament on March 5, and his father, Tim, said it was like a big family reunion. “When there’s another loss like that, it means that much more (during this tournament),” he said. “We celebrate the courage and sense of service they all had.”

OCPS: Focus is on graduation

QUICK FACTS WINTER GARDEN LOCATION NOW CLOSED

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The piece, which claimed OCPS forces its academically struggling students out of its traditional high schools, implies the school’s intention is to ensure students at risk of not graduating in four years don’t negatively impact their graduation rates. The district’s motivation for doing this, the article suggested, is because a school’s letter-grade rating — which affects property values and funding eligibility — is in part dependent on graduation rates and students’ scores on the Florida Standardized Assessment tests. However, OCPS maintains the article, which used Olympia High School and Sunshine High School to make its point, failed to include important context and facts that challenge that idea. Chief among those is the reality that the district’s official overall graduation rate — which is what the Florida Department of Education uses — includes both traditional and charter schools regardless of whether they are operated by a for-profit management company. “No movement of students between traditional and non-traditional schools has any impact on the official overall graduation rate because all schools, traditional and charter, are included in the official overall graduation rate,” said OCPS spokeswoman Lorena Hitchcock. Students only are included in the official graduation rate if they actually graduate in four years once they enroll in their first semester of high school. That means students who fall behind academically and withdraw from a traditional school to enroll at an alternative program still count against a school’s graduation rate. “If they fall that behind, they are already out of the cohort (a student’s freshman class) and they already count against us on our graduation rate,” said Scott Howat, OCPS’ chief communications officer. “So if they transfer to (Sunshine High School) or one of the other (Accelerated Learning Solutions) schools, they already had a negative impact on their cohort at the high school. So, that’s not the issue for us. The issue for us is to get them in a program that would best benefit them, getting them a diploma and getting them on to either postsecondary education, an industry certification or onto work.” A diploma is what 19-year-old Shemuwel Russ earned after graduating from Sunshine High at 18. Although he did not enroll at Sunshine High because of a low GPA, Russ — who had been homeschooled all his life — was told that if he wanted to attend a traditional high school, he would not graduate until he was 20 because of his lack of credit hours. Russ excelled at Sunshine High and now attends Seminole State College, where he studies political science to someday become, he hopes, the future Florida governor. His favorite aspect of Sun-

n There are 54,703 students enrolled in Orange County’s 19 traditional high schools.

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

n In the 2015-16 school year, OCPS graduation rates for traditional high schools increased 2.6% to 92.2%. n The official graduation rate as calculated by the state — which includes charter schools — has increased by 3.7% to 81.3% in the 2015-16 school year. n In 2011, the Florida Department of Education changed the calculation of the graduation rate to the Federal Uniform Rate. Under this calculation, students who receive a Certificate of Completion, GED, Special Diploma or transfer to adult education centers are counted as nongraduates. n Graduation rates and singleyear dropout rates apply to different periods of time, so the single-year dropout rate is not the inverse of the graduation rate – which is calculated by FLDOE over four years.

shine was the self-paced curriculum. Howat also emphasized the schools’ guidance counselors do not force academically struggling students to withdraw. Instead, the students and their families are informed of their options and given the choice to either withdraw and consider enrolling in alternative programs, or stay and graduate late. But they are reminded they cannot continue attending a traditional school once they turn 20 because of safety policies. “There are students who, for whatever reason, fall behind and are not going to graduate on time,” Howat said. “All we’re doing is trying to provide options for families and students — to say, ‘Hey you can still get a diploma.’ It may not be at a traditional high school, or it may be. It may not be in four years. It may be in four-and-ahalf years, or it may be in four years plus the summer. But we try to offer enough options and opportunities for these students to be able to get a diploma.” Russ said some of his friends are still at their traditional high schools because they did not have enough credits to graduate in four years. “They were telling me that their counselors said there’s an option to go to Sunshine, but a lot of my friends said no, and the school didn’t kick them out,” Russ said. “They’re still in Olympia, Dr. Phillips, Ocoee — they’re still there, currently.” Although Russ has not read the article, he had heard about the allegations against Sunshine. “When I hear what this reporter said, I’m just like, ‘I’ve been here — I was a student here,’” Russ said. “I have friends who were here. I know what goes on here, so to hear something like (that) — it just seems like a very ignorant, outside perspective. … It’s just such a surface-level analysis of what goes on here.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

Here comes the fighter DANIELLE HENDRIX

GET ON TEAM DANIEL

STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST

D

aniel Roberts is a typical 9-year-old boy. He loves Star Wars, Minecraft, WWE wrestling, the New York Giants and playing outside with his friends. He is a fourth-grader at Keene’s Crossing Elementary, loves riding his scooter to school and attends the after-school STEM program. And as Daniel embarks on a long, difficult treatment path after his cancer diagnosis in February, he’ll do so knowing that fight is just a part of him. He’s still Daniel, his mother, Catherine Inman, has reminded him. He’s still funny. He’s still the jokester. FINDING A DIAGNOSIS

Inman said it started in January when he first began complaining about pain in his leg. He found it painful to walk and go up the stairs. “We thought it was probably growing pains; he’s 9,” Inman said. “I let it go for a week, but I was talking to him and he said it hurt really bad. This had been the second or third time he’d complained about it.” The pediatrician said it could have been a pulled tendon or growing pains. Daniel was told to rest and ice his leg for a week, and didn’t participate in P.E. at school — a tough task for an active kid who loves being outside. “One time, his sister wasn’t feeling well, and I couldn’t take him outside. He told me I was denying him his fresh air,” Inman said with a laugh. “I had to give

him credit for that — it was a creative thing to say.” But a week later, Inman noticed he was still limping on it. He’d be playing outside with his friends, and she noticed him favoring it when he was running. That’s when they noticed a knot on his leg. They were referred to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Florida Hospital, and an X-ray on Thursday, Feb. 16, revealed what looked like his femur bone peeling away from a tumor and regrowing around it. Immediately Daniel went in for a CT scan of his lungs and an MRI. On Friday, they were referred to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville. It all happened fast from there. Daniel received a full bone scan and biopsy in Gainesville that Monday, which confirmed he had osteosarcoma — a type of bone cancer. He was admitted Thursday, underwent surgery Friday to get a port installed and began chemotherapy Saturday. He’ll complete 10 weeks of chemo, then have another bone scan and MRI. After the scan the current plan is for Daniel to have surgery on his leg, a rotationplasty

— the cancerous portion of his leg will be removed, and the remaining limb below rotated and reattached. Essentially, his ankle will become his knee and he will be fitted for a prosthetic from there down. The silver lining is the cancer is not anywhere else in his body or in his growth plates, and the tumor was caught early. He’ll undergo treatment for the next 10 months. “Thankfully, he was persistent in saying, ‘Mom, my leg still hurts,’” Inman said. “He’s never had a hospital stay or anything like that, so this was his first overnight stay and first surgery, so he was very scared. I told him, ‘I can help you get through this and be your cheerleader, but I can’t make you fight it — that has to come from you.’” SUPPORT SYSTEM

Although life is going to be a little different for Daniel, the jokester hasn’t lost his charm, sense of humor or caring nature. “When we first told him he had cancer, he was more worried that he was going to get other people sick and that would be why he couldn’t go back to school,” Inman said. Since he was diagnosed, his classmates have written get-well cards and even held a small fundraiser for him at Summerport Village’s March food truck night. His mom said he reads every card. “He’s amazed at how much people care,” she said. “He’s like, ‘I’m just me.’ I told him, ‘You’re a kid who had something happen to you that’s very unfortunate, and it tends to bring out the best in

Catherine Inman with her two kids, Daniel and Jessica Roberts.

people when they try to help and be there for you.’ He has so many people in his corner rooting for him and cheering for him.” Aside from missing school, Daniel also is worried about the eventual loss of his hair from chemotherapy. “The kids still include him; they don’t look at him any differently because he’s still Daniel,” Inman said. “I told him that just because you might be bald, that doesn’t change who you are. … It’s just a speed bump in life that happens. It’s trying to to find our new normal.”

The support has been overwhelming. Inman’s co-workers have taken up a collection for the family, and a longtime friend set up a GoFundMe account to help cover travel and medical expenses. “As a mom, you worry about the world your kids are growing up in,” she said. “And then something happens and people rally around you. The text messages, Facebook messages, phone calls … I can’t say thank you enough for everyone’s support.” Contact Danielle Hendrix at dhendrix@orangeobserver.com.

In its first year, the Lakefront Farmer’s Market at Summerport Village has compiled an impressive roster of vendors. With wares ranging from vintage coasters and handcrafted jewelry to sweets and all-natural home fragrances, it has been a one-stop shop for the community to support local businesses. But even though the young market turned 1 year old in February, its regulars have begun to notice a trend. It’s shrinking. The brainchild of Summerport Village resident Shanny Rios, the Lakefront Farmer’s Market opened Feb. 21, 2016, with the intention of bringing local artisans and small businesses together for the community to experience and support. And it’s been quite the platform for various local vendors whose businesses have outgrown a need for the exposure the market offers. Businesses such as Camila’s Sweets and Monstar Makings, among others, have since graduated the market and moved on to storefronts and successful Etsy shops. With that success comes opportunity, and now, the market is in need of some fresh craftsmen and entrepreneurs. “I’m super happy for my vendors who have just exploded so much that they’re now getting office spaces and storefronts,” Rios said. “ That’s what I started the market to do — to have the community support the vendors. My focus is to find unique vendors — anything from artists to local crafters to even organizations.” The Summerport market opened with 25 vendors and grew to about 35 at its peak. Now, it’s down to about 17, and not all of those vendors are out weekly. Rios is accepting applications for new vendors. She would love

ne could say Dr. Phillips High School’s theater program served as the impetus for award-winning actor and improv genius Wayne Brady’s eventual path into fame and success. Now a household name most known for his role in the improv comedy show, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” the then-16-year-old Brady was once just a freshman who happened to enter the theater at the behest of his friend and catch the attention of the performing-arts program direcSEE BRADY PAGE 9

tor, Karen Rugerio. “Wayne was tall and skinny, and he had on his ROTC uniform,” Rugerio remembered. “I heard his voice, he said, ‘Hello ma’am.’ And I was like, ‘Uh, you need to be in the theater.’ And from that day, he was smitten. He was in love with the theater, and we were in love with him.” From that day forward, until he graduated in 1989, young Brady was in every one of the school’s theater productions. In the school’s very first play, “Dark of the Moon,” Brady played Uncle Smelicue – a small supporting role. But in every play after that, Rugerio said, he was cast as a main character. He played the lead role in “I’m Not Rappaport,” Judd in the musical “Oklahoma!,” Dick Van Dyke in “Bye Bye Birdie,” the role of Iachimo in the Shakespeare play “Cymbeline,” and more. The future famous actor spent so much time in the theater that he sometimes skipped his other classes, particularly math, which he admitted was always his least favorite subject. “I had to chase him to his other classes,” said Rugerio, who Brady described as his second mom. “Teachers would contact me and ask, ‘Have you seen Wayne Brady?’ and I’d say, ‘Yeeees.’ He would just be down in the theater skipping class. So I’d find him and go, ‘Please, please go to class.’ … Getting him to go to class was such a challenge — especially if it was a math class.” Despite skipping classes on occasion, Brady was a year ahead of his peers and graduated at 17. “I would never skip class unless I deemed it a good reason and, in my teenage brain, a good reason was because I wanted to really be great at what it was that I was doing,” Brady said. “I kind of gave myself the rationale that I’m not going to be crunching numbers any time soon, and I count really well. So, either I can memorize this monologue that could help me when I get out of here, or I can learn about stats.” But one thing he sometimes forgot to learn were his lines, Rugerio said. To make up for it, Brady would skillfully improv his lines — even Shakespeare. However, Rugerio was always able to tell the difference. “Improv came naturally to him,”

Rugerio said. “He was in my first Shakespeare production, and he could improv Shakespeare. And I’d say, ‘Yeah, I’d prefer that you learn your lines rather than make them up.’ … He could improv his way out of anything. He was really very, very smart.” Brady has stayed in touch with Rugerio throughout the years and always invites her to his premieres and award ceremonies. He credits his time in the DPHS performingarts program as playing a large influence in his growth as both a person and an actor. “The cool thing is it got me out of high school with a sense of accomplishment and purpose,” Brady said of his experience at DP. “I look back at every one of my theatrical endeavors, not just as theater, but I was learning a lot about myself and how to become a young man.” Brady has stayed connected to his alma mater with occasional visits to current DP theater students to offer them industry tips and advice. As a student, he never imagined his career would involve television. “TV didn’t even play into my thought process,” he said. “Because my bar was really, ‘I just want to be happy, and if I can work for the rest of my life on stage in this part of the country or that part of the country, then I’ll be happy.’ So I overshot that, luckily.” Brady is currently in Chicago joining the cast of “Hamilton” in the role of Aaron Burr. He will return for his eighth season as the host of CBS’s “Let’s Make A Deal,” as well as a new season of “Whose Line Is it Anyway?” He was inducted into the Orange County Public School’s Hall of Fame along with four other inductees. A dinner and ceremony held Saturday, March 4, honored the inductees at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort. “It feels great, especially coming from a school like Dr. Phillips,” Brady said. “No one could’ve ever told me the kid that grew up in Tangelo Park, and especially during the end of my high-school days who didn’t make stellar grades, that I would be inducted into the Hall of Fame, so it really means a lot. I think to me it means that any other kid growing up in an environment can look at it and go, ‘That’s definitely achievable.’”

When a questionable call ends a season T

he texts and phone calls kept coming, even after Ben Wilson took the day off that Friday to get out of town for the weekend. His hope was to clear his head and get away from all the noise, but the messages kept rolling in. Many had photos or videos pertinent to what had happened a few days earlier on Feb. 21. Other were asking what could be done. Still more were simply offering support or concurrence that the Windermere Prep basketball team had gotten a raw deal. This is what happens when a season with championship

STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

dreams ends on a controversial call. The setting for this story is the regional semifinals of the FHSAA

Class 5A Playoffs. Windermere Prep — last year’s state champion in Class 3A and a favorite of many to win it all in Class 5A this year — hosted The Villages Charter and, as Wilson will admit, his team wasn’t playing to its full potential (more on that later). Despite that, with 7.7 seconds remaining, senior star and Memphis signee David Nickelberry was driving to the rim with a chance to tie the 72-70 game. His shot did not go down, but a tip-in follow by Shaquan Jules with about two seconds to go, did. Immediately, though, the game-tying basket is waived off

by an official for basket interference — a call with which many, including Wilson, disagree. “My view was right by the view of the ref who made the call,” Wilson said. “I honestly thought it had just come out of the cylinder.” Allegedly, there are photos and video that suggest the ball came out of the cylinder and that Jules’ tip-in was clean, but the controversy also does not stop there, either. In the confusion, the game was called for time expiring, although

The Dr. Phillips High water polo program will host the inaugural Ian Supra Memorial Water Polo Tournament March 10 and 11. It will include the boys and girls teams from DP, Olympia and West Orange. Supra, a former standout for the Panthers’ boys water polo team, passed away in the fall of 2015 after his battle with cancer.

Dr. Phillips wrestler Dylan Meeks came up just short in his bid for yet another state championship, falling 5-4 to Kyron Taylor from South Dade High in the 285-pound weight class championship match. Meeks, who won titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016, finished his varsity wrestling career with a record of 1793 (includes eighth-grade year at CFCA; 139-2 while at Dr. Phillips).

This spring, girls playing softball at Windermere Little League and Dr. Phillips Little League will be playing for teams named after those of National Pro Fastpitch — the women’s professional softball league. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

As is customary with so many Little Leagues, the boys at Windermere Little League get to be on teams and wear uniforms of professional baseball teams. Starting this spring, girls who play in Windermere Little League’s softball program will get that same opportunity. The softball program at Windermere Little League — as well as the one at Dr. Phillips Little League — has named its teams this spring after teams in the National

Pro Fastpitch league, the women’s professional softball league. Now, girls from Dr. Phillips or Windermere will be able to sport the jersey of the Chicago Bandits or the USSSA Pride (based in Kissimmee) and dream of one day playing for that team. This opportunity excites Kirsti Merritt, a former star at the University of Florida and current outfielder for the Pride. “This is really cool to see — to see little girls wearing the Bandits jersey or little girls wearing the Pride jersey,” said Merritt after speaking at Windermere Little

League’s Opening Day festivities. “That’s really cool, because now, they can be like ‘Oh, I want to play for the Pride one day.’” The idea originated with Shawn King, Windermere Little League’s director of softball. “My niece, Jessica Shults, used to play for the Pride,” King said. “We went down to games, and I was kind of astounded that the stands weren’t filled with girls — there’s so much softball in the area, but so many didn’t know about (the league). I thought a great way SEE JERSEYS PAGE 14

to raise awareness would be to name our teams after the professional teams.” King said it has worked and that girls who weren’t familiar with the league previously now want to know where their new team name came from. “We have girls (who) wonder where the names came from, and they find out and they’re going to Google and learning about the teams,” King said. “It is neat, because they can identify with players and identify with a team and cheer for that team.” All of which is music to Merritt’s ears as both an ambassador

It’s your senior season, and the team is playing well and above .500 so far. What’s that mean to you? Coming into the season, we weren’t too sure what to expect — we lost a lot of great players the past two years. It means a lot to be above .500 and playing really well. Hopefully we can keep doing it throughout the rest of the season and make a run in districts.

the moment in question appeared to have occurred with around two seconds remaining — as evidenced by a photo circulated by Twitter user Daniel Rosario (@DanielPrepHoops) that shows Jules tipping the ball in with 2.3 seconds remaining. So, even if the basket interference call was correct, The Villages Charter should have had to try and inbound the ball again, with Windermere Prep having an opportunity to steal the ball and get off one last shot or immediately foul. But none of that happened, as fans from the visiting team stormed the court to celebrate, and fans from Windermere Prep were left in disbelief. “Instead of the three-man crew getting together (to review) … they all just made for the locker room and got out of there,” Wilson said. “In a lot of ways, I was frustrated with the ending.” High-school sports officials certainly aren’t perfect, and Wilson is not a coach known

Which win of the six are you most proud of so far? Probably the Olympia game — we won 15-14 in overtime. I was lucky enough to get the winning goal in overtime. What are your prospects for college? I’ve got into Butler, Mercer, Miami (Ohio) and Rollins so far. I’m waiting to hear back from Wake Forest and Colgate.

Tough break for WPS

What’s it been like to play for a professional player such as JoJo Marasco? It’s great. He came here my freshman year, and I’ve played for him all throughout high school. I’ve learned a lot from him. He’s brought a lot of experience from playing at Syracuse, the MLL and now for the USA, too. He’s really been able to build a program.

High-school athletes playing three sports is becoming rare. Why do you do it? For one, it’s just a lot of fun for me. I get to play sports with my friends and keep myself doing something that’s other than school. It’s great to build relationships with the coaches. We have JoJo

for the league and the sport, in general. Although college softball is enjoying record popularity — in 2015, the Women’s College World Series’ television viewership eclipsed that of the men’s tournament — the NPF is still working to build its brand. “Having these little girls know that there is a professional league out there, maybe it grows it a little more,” Merritt said, who added it can also encourage them to dream big. “Not just college softball, now they can go even further and say, ‘I want to play professional softball.’”

for shouting at officials. He also refuses to cite that sequence as the reason his team lost that night. “I try to make that (officiating) the last excuse for why we lost a game,” Wilson said. “(That is) including this game we’re talking about — I still don’t say that’s why we lost.” Nevertheless, Wilson, his team and the campus community believe their boys should have been playing in an overtime period, and since that didn’t happen it is a tough reality — especially for the seniors. “That was the worst part of the whole situation for me … you look at your five seniors and they’re mad, they’re crying, they’re upset,” Wilson said. “They’re still caught up in the moment — their season ended and their career ended.” There is little to be be done about game’s ending. The FHSAA notified Windermere Prep the next day it was aware of the situation, but little else has come of it, and the Class 5A State Playoffs concluded last week with Calvary Christian winning a state championship (The Villages Charter won once more and ultimately was defeated in the state semifinals by state runner-up Tampa Catholic). Ultimately, resolving such a situation without the use of replay would be difficult. So, despite the texts and pleas of many, Wilson said he isn’t caught up in trying to right what happened. “What can be done? They’re

not going to come back in there and re-do the last play. What’s done is done,” Wilson said. “You’ve got to just deal with it.” However, the veteran coach hopes the instance can be used as a teaching opportunity for referees going forward — especially pertaining to handling a controversial ending, when the atmosphere in a gym can be tense. Wilson said he would have liked to see more of a conference between the three officials before quickly exited the playing area. As for the players, the hurt still lingers two weeks later, but there is reason to look forward. Four of the team’s five seniors will be playing college athletics (two will play basketball, two will play football). As for those who will return next fall, Wilson couldn’t imagine a better source of motivation to use for the 2017-18 season. “The guys coming back … this is the most obvious and easiest motivation you’ll use for those kids,” Wilson said.
