City: Turn lanes will ease C.R. 535 congestion

Officials expect the new left- and rightturn lanes to relieve peak-hour traffic. GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN If you’ve traveled past the County Road 535 and Stoneybrook West Parkway intersection recently, you may have noticed construction workers in their familiar orange hard hats tearing up the left side of road. To relieve the routine morning and evening traffic congestion that plagues C.R. 535, the city of Winter Garden has been working on a road improvement plan encompassing significant changes to the affected area. One of those changes is the addition of a dedicated right-turn lane and an additional left lane. “It’s a significant change to the whole road system,” City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said. “We’re getting an additional left lane thrown in, and if you’re heading south on 535, once you approach Stoneybrook Parkway, we’re adding an additional right-turn lane

Based on a New Year’s Resolution in 2007 and continuing through 2016, cyclist Sherry McMahon has ridden a total of 10,000 miles and raised more than $25,000 for animal rescue. Nicknamed the Rescue Rider, McMahon pledged to ride one mile on her bicycle for every dollar donated with a goal of 1,000 miles and $1,000 per year. She completed her goals in 2016 and increased donations to more than $3,500 this year, the largest annual amount to date. Rescue groups that have benefited this year include Candy’s Cats, The Haven for Injured and Orphaned Wildlife and the TREATS Program for teaching prisoners to train shelter dogs at The Transition House, a halfway facility of Osceola County.

Sunshine High School serves as a second choice for students who struggle at traditional high schools. The average student who enrolls at Sunshine reads at a fifth-grade level and has a 1.4 GPA.

Orange County Public Schools, the subject of a recent article published by ProPublica and USA Today, has maintained that sup-

pressing dropout rates and artificially boosting graduation rates is not part of its agenda. Getting students to graduate, however, is. SEE GRADUATION PAGE 6

Brandon Paulikas was complaining of headaches a few weeks ago, so his mother took him to the doctor, who said it was likely a migraine. Then his abdomen swelled, so the doctor said it’s probably a viral infection. As various tests were performed, the diagnoses changed: It could be walking pneumonia. Then, the conversation became much more serious: It looks like lymphoma. And finally: Your son has leukemia. The fight for survival has begun for the 14-year-old Winter Garden boy, a sports fanatic who plays defensive end on the West Orange High School freshman football team. He started his aggressive, 28-day chemotherapy treatment Thursday, March 2, at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. He felt good, he said, just a little nauseated. He likely will lose his curly brown hair, but his parents, Andy and Barb Paulikas, are confident he won’t lose his positive attitude and expectation to beat acute lymphocytic leukemia. A bonemarrow test confirmed this, and a lumbar puncture revealed there are no cancer cells in his spinal cord or brain. The Paulikas family has been overwhelmed with the generosity pouring in from the community. While they sat in the hospital, reeling from the lifechanging information, Andy Paulikas turned to Facebook to ask for prayers. His original post received nearly 700 interactions and almost 400 comments from citizens. He said the social media correspondence has been therapeutic for him. “The amount of support we’ve seen come out of the world in the last week has been incredible,” Barb Paulikas said. “I’ve never seen such a blanketing of prayer and love and support.”

The survival rate for leukemia is 90%. Because Brandon is 14, the age at which patients are considered high risk, doctors are aggressively attacking the disease. return to the hospital twice a week for his chemotherapy treatments. He likely will complete his schoolwork through Orange County Public Schools’s Homebound program. In the meantime, frequent visitors, including members of his Warrior football team, are occupying Brandon’s time during his hospital stay. He is, however, eager to get home. Andy and Barb say their son is an optimist and mentally prepared for this battle. He worries about his parents and sister, though, and doesn’t like seeing them cry. “I’m the one who shoulders all the burden here,” Andy Paulikas said. “I try to be strong. … I’m not an emotional guy. … I’m getting tired of crying; and I can’t stop.” Barb Paulikas works in a hospital cardiovascular intensive-care unit and is accustomed to dealing with medical issues but said it’s completely different when it’s a loved one.

“There’s been more love in our life these last five days than I’ve had in my life. I had no idea how much strangers would be willing to help.” — Andy Paulikas, Brandon’s father

“I’m in health care, and I can’t wrap my head around this,” she said. “I take care of the sickest of the sick, and I can’t wrap my head around this.” Not knowing what was wrong with their son was the scariest part, and once they had a diagnosis after weeks of the unknown, it became easier to engage in the fight. “I told Brandon, ‘You’re going to stand up and punch cancer in the throat,’” Andy Paulikas said. “After we talked about it, he gave me the nod, and I knew he was going to be OK.” Contact Amy Quesinberry at amyq@orangeobserver.com.

Because right now, with the single right-turn lane, traffic is really backing up on 535.” The city has been analyzing the area’s traffic for the past five years and making small improvements in phases for the past two years. This recent project is the start

of the second phase of multiple planned road improvements that will total an estimated $2 million, which will be funded primarily from impact fees. Bollhoefer estimates phase two of the road improvements, including the additional rightturn lane and left lane, will be completed in about six months. OCOEE When the Ocoee Parks and Recreation Department called to ask if driving a horse and carriage down the street was legal, Ocoee Police officer Lt. Bill Wager became curious. What was the horse and carriage for? he asked. It was for 6-year-old Katie Tagney, who is fighting cancer. Her family had reached out to Make-A-Wish of Central and Northern Florida in November, requesting help to take Katie on a trip to Walt Disney World. The organization granted Katie’s wish and sent her, her mom, her grandma and her younger sister to Disney World during the first week of March. But on Sunday, Feb. 19, dozens of volunteers, firefighters, policemen and even Cinderella came to Bill Breeze Park to celebrate the fulfillment of Katie’s wish. “It was an honor to be able to do something for somebody who needs it,” Wagner said. “It meant a lot to me and to the officers who got to participate.” Cinderella’s carriage, pulled by a horse, waited for Katie at Bill Breeze Park. When she and her mom arrived, Katie’s smile couldn’t have been bigger. “When she got out of the car and saw this big, beautiful Cin-

But that gift wasn’t really for Katie, Wagner said. “We know how these situations can go,” he said. “So that shadow box was more for her mom later on.” For Wagner, the day brought back another Make-A-Wish memory. “Make-A-Wish took care of my cousin (when I was younger) and really made an impact in our lives,” he said. “So I wanted to give back.” And finding fellow Ocoee officers to volunteer for the event wasn’t a hard task. “Our officers were great,” Wagner said. “The best part for them was leading the carriage with lights on, being part of the magical moment for somebody.” Like many other 6-year-old girls, Katie is a fan of princesses. According to Make-A-Wish, Bruce Young, colors CFP®, Katie’s favorite areCRPC® pink, purple and blue, and she loves the Financial Advisor . movie “Moana.”

The piece, which claimed OCPS forces its academically struggling students out of its traditional high schools, implies the school’s intention is to ensure students at risk of not graduating in four years don’t negatively impact their graduation rates. The district’s motivation for doing this, the article suggested, is because a school’s letter-grade rating — which affects property values and funding eligibility — is in part dependent on graduation rates and students’ scores on the Florida Standardized Assessment tests. However, OCPS maintains the article, which used Olympia High School and Sunshine High School to make its point, failed to include important context and facts that challenge that idea. Chief among those is the reality that the district’s official overall graduation rate — which is what the Florida Department of Education uses — includes both traditional and charter schools regardless of whether they are operated by a for-profit management company. “No movement of students between traditional and non-traditional schools has any impact on the official overall graduation rate because all schools, traditional and charter, are included in the official overall graduation rate,” said OCPS spokeswoman Lorena Hitchcock. Students only are included in the official graduation rate if they actually graduate in four years once they enroll in their first semester of high school. That means students who fall behind academically and withdraw from a traditional school to enroll at

n Orange County has 13,750 students enrolled in its 44 charter schools. n There are 54,703 students enrolled in Orange County’s 19 traditional high schools. n In the 2015-16 school year, OCPS graduation rates for traditional high schools increased 2.6% to 92.2%. n The official graduation rate as calculated by the state — which includes charter schools — has increased by 3.7% to 81.3% in the 2015-16 school year. n In 2011, the Florida Department of Education changed the calculation of the graduation rate to the Federal Uniform Rate. Under this calculation, students who receive a Certificate of Completion, GED, Special Diploma or transfer to adult education centers are counted as nongraduates. n Graduation rates and single-year dropout rates apply to different periods of time, so the single-year dropout rate is not the inverse of the graduation rate – which is calculated by FLDOE over four years.

SOUL SOUNDS

232323

FIND THE SOUND OF YOUR SOUL CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9

Pearce, who hails from England, hosted a workshop on Sunday, March 5, at the SoBo Gallery in Winter Garden to teach people how to find their own soul’s sound. “We each have a note, a core sound of our beings,” Pearce said. “Most of us aren’t using it.” NOISE CANCELED

Finding the sound of one’s soul is an idea that has been around for centuries and used by many ancient people, Pearce said. For example, the word personality traces back to the Latin translation of persona, which means “through sound.” To find that sound, Pearce uses a series of breathing techniques and vocal exercises. The goal of finding this singular note is to reveal the true identity, or personality, of every person. “When we are the most authentic, we are spellbinding,” Pearce said. The reason people today don’t tap into their own sound is because of the constant noise of life, Pearce said. But once that single note is found, every other part of life becomes harmonious. “When you balance the spiritual, mental and physical, than life becomes amazing,” Pearce said. 3D LIFE

Pearce’s own journey into the spiritual world didn’t begin until later in his adult years, after the death of his mother. Having worked as an actor and later a voice coach, Pearce began studying to become a medium after he was visited by his mother’s spirit. “I’ve always seen spirit; I’ve always seen soul; I’ve always seen the supernatural world,” Pearce said. “I discovered it organically.” In the process of delving deeper into his ability to see the spiritual world, Pearce learned the value of meditation. During one particular afternoon while meditating on a hill in Glastonbury, England, Pearce came face to face with a host of angels. They didn’t look like humans with wings or halos, he said. They looked like orbs, radiant globes of light, floating in mid-air. They were the ones who showed him the sound of his soul. Already working in a teaching position as a vocal coach, Pearce expanded his teaching to include his newfound knowledge of the soul.

n Sit on a chair with both feet on the floor. Make sure your spine is straight and body is centered on itself. Notice your breathing. Imagine that your breath is a beam of light moving up and down the spine like an elevator shaft as you inhale and exhale. Work on widening your ribcage into the abdomen to deepen your breathing. n Add sound to your breathing. As you exhale try hissing or humming. Feel for the sound’s origin. Is it coming from your head? Is it coming from your throat? Is it coming from your gut? n Begin making a “ha” sound. You are now looking for the sound that vibrates in the center of your heart, like a mouth is coming from your heart itself. Try starting with a higher-toned “ha” sound. You should feel the vibrations in your head. Slowly deepen your sound until it is coming from your heart. When you feel it in your heart, that note is the sound of your soul.

“You have the soul and the 3D life,” he said. “What I do is bring them together for a more soulful life.” CONNECTION

When Gabriella West, a cofounder of the Winter Garden Art Association and the SoBo Gallery, heard Pearce was making a stop in Florida during his speaking tour, she contacted him and asked if he could visit SoBo Gallery. Pearce loved the idea and quickly adjusted his schedule last minute for the visit. This wasn’t the first time that West and Pearce met. They had befriended each other several years ago after West discovered Pearce’s work and found her own soul sound. “The whole of your insides are vibrating,” she said about finding her sound. “It’s an experience.” For Pearce, his visit gave him an opportunity to help more people find themselves through sound. “When I see somebody smiling and joyous, that’s my greatest gift,” he said. “That’s why I do what I do.” Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

urple, black and gold decorations provided a festive atmosphere for Whispering Oak Elementary’s father-daughter masquerade ball Saturday, Feb. 25. Daddies and daughters were given boutonnieres and masks upon entering Tanner Hall. They enjoyed refreshments and dancing and posed for photos against a colorful backdrop to commemorate the evening. For some students, this was their first dance; for the older ones, it was their final dance as an elementary-school student.

Maya Singh shared a hug with her fourth-grade teacher, Micaela Thomas. Maya attended the dance with her father, Larry.

Natalia Bartko and her dad, Bill, attended the fifth-grader’s final Whispering Oak Elementary father-daughter dance. They have attended every year.

Top Gun Orlando’s Junior Black team demonstrates the routine which won it first place in its division at CHEERSPORT Nationals in Atlanta last month.

SPACE TO BREATHE Although Top Gun All-Stars Orlando has been around for years, it only moved to its current facility on West Colonial Drive in front of the West Oaks Mall (the former Toys ‘R’ Us building) in May 2013. That move has paid dividends for the girls and especially the coaches, who have to find space for them to train. Top Gun now has four full spring floors and one full flat floor as compared to just one floor and one half at their former location in Gotha.

he girls from Top Gun AllStars Orlando’s Junior Black team can now say they are national champions. The team from the Ocoee-based gym placed first in its division (Junior Large 3 Division B) at CHEERSPORT Nationals from Feb. 17 to 19, in Atlanta, recording a score of 96.53. Not only did the girls from Top Gun — who range in age from 8 through 14 — best the 12 other teams in their immediate division, but their score also was one of the highest recorded of the hundreds of teams in the competition, earning them a paid bid to the prestigious, invite-only “The Summit” event in May at Disney. The achievement makes Junior Black the only of eight teams from the Ocoee gym to win first at CHEERSPORT Nationals and one of only two teams from Top Gun’s three gyms around Florida (a team from Top Gun’s Miami gym also placed first in its respective division). To follow their national championship performance, the girls also placed first in their division at the “Battle by the Bay” Championships, put on by Spirit Sports Feb. 25 to 26 in Tampa. Carly Human, one of the team’s three coaches, said the majority of the team’s 32 girls hail from parts of West Orange County SEE CHEER PAGE 14

Seth Hughes It’s still early in the season for high-school baseball, but already, Legacy Charter senior Seth Hughes has been leading the team through three games in hits. He’s also racked up four RBIs and a win on the mound.

What’s kept you playing baseball throughout the years? Just the love of the sport — it’s so much different than all the other sports. It’s practically a game of chess, and to me, that’s just awesome. What goes through your mind when you’re up at bat? I just try to hit it right back up the middle or try to advance the runners if there are any. I’m just trying to bat for my team, not myself. What’s it like being a senior on the team? It’s a lot different. You have to be an example to the younger kids, and we do have a lot of younger kids (on the team), and they’re very good. The team as a whole, we’re definitely a family. Where do you see yourself five years from now? Probably graduating from FSU with a business degree or finance. I think

that’s cool — I like numbers and stuff like that. But I want to go to Florida Gulf Coast University too, maybe try out for their baseball team and see how that goes. Who’s your MLB team and favorite player? The Dodgers, and I like Clayton Kershaw, because of how he pitches and his demeanor on the mound. I really look up to that, so I just try and copy that when I’m on there. What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Probably just not to focus on myself as much as the team, and it’s a team sport, not a “me” sport. Disney or Nickelodeon? 100% Nickelodeon! Nickelodeon has always had those great, funny shows. Disney tries to develop characters too much, and I’m like, “Nah, man, I just want some jokes.” Spongebob and Rocket Power were the best ones. Any hobbies outside of baseball? I do go to New Smyrna Beach a lot and try to surf and skim board. Any favorite musicians? It’s a tie between Migos and something like Van Halen. I’m very diverse with music. What are your top three Netflix picks? “The Office,” “Shameless” and probably “30 for 30.” — DANIELLE HENDRIX

WINTER GARDEN The West Orange Warriors boys lacrosse team soundly defeated district rival Montverde Academy 15-5 March 3, improving to 8-0 on the season. With their undefeated start, the Warriors are making a case early in the season that they might be among the best squads in the state. “This group came together back in September in club season and has been working hard ever since,” veteran coach Bill Baker said. “We had a really good club season — we beat a lot of the top teams and it was great for confidence and morale.” In addition to the win over MVA (5-2) — likely West Orange’s toughest competition in District 11 — the Warriors have scored impressive wins over teams such as Boone (6-2), Winter Park (7-2) and Martin County (5-3). The win on the road against Martin County was particu-

larly noteworthy because of the manner in which it occured: West Orange rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the third quarter to steal a 10-9 win. The Warriors will wrap up the regular season in the next two weeks, a span that includes games against local rivals such as Dr. Phillips (March 10), Apopka (March 15) and Bishop Moore (March 30), as well as a game against an out-of-state opponent in Ohio’s Hawken School (March 24).

It will be a tough stretch, but the play of the Warriors so far has their coach optimistic about their ability to handle it. “This schedule is probably the toughest we’ve put together in my 11 years,” Baker said. “But we knew if we play up to our ability, we’ll be able to handle it.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

PLAYING FOR A PURPOSE When the Warriors (8-0) host Dr. Phillips (6-4) at 7:30 p.m. March 10, it will be more than just a game between rivals. The game marks West Orange’s second partnering with the Yellow Brick Road Foundation — also known as the Holden Flynn Foundation,

whose mission is increasing awareness of congenital heart defects and providing support to families of hospitalized children with CHDs. Last year, the team donated more than $4,000, which enabled the organization to purchase four medically

equipped wagons for children with congenital heart defects. In addition to the team’s fundraising efforts ahead of the game, proceeds from ticket sales and concessions at the game will be donated. For more info on the foundation, visit ybrf.org.

including Windermere, Ocoee and other surrounding areas, although some commute from farther away. Human also said continuity has played a big role in the team’s success. “A ton of them have cheered together — probably about 18

have cheered together (previously),” Human said. The girls from Top Gun aren’t done yet, either. There is a UCA competition this week at Disney, and there’s still The Summit. Still, that doesn’t mean the girls or their coaches aren’t proud of their achievement in Atlanta.

“It’s hard to put into words — it’s a huge deal,” Human said. “These girls dream of these jackets and rings. So, when you get to see them accomplish one of their cheer girls, it’s pretty amazing.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

VIRGINIA AYERS BRADFORD DIED MARCH 6, 2017.

Edna Marcella Boettcher, 78, of Ocoee, Florida, passed away Friday, March 3, 2017, at Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Florida. Marcella was born Dec. 28, 1938, in Marion County, Florida, and was the daughter of the late Richard Harold Ledward and Edna Marcella Ledward. After Marcella graduated from Miami High School, she married her husband, Jerry Boettcher, and they had a son and daughter. She and her family moved in 1977 to Ocoee, Florida. CAROLINE BAILEY GREEN DIED FRIDAY, FEB. 24, 2017.

Caroline Bailey Green passed away at home in Windermere on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was 90 years old. Caroline was born in Thomasville, Georgia, to Marjorie and George Bailey, both Florida natives. She spent many summers with family in Gainesville and Monticello. She was raised in Englewood, New Jersey, graduating from Dwight School. She attended Wellesley College but left early to marry the love of her life, Jesse Green, who was a West Point graduate. She later graduated from Huntington College (Alabama) with a degree in elementary education. Caroline was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Jesse Green; her sister, Sue Mason; brother, George Bailey, and son-in-law, Paul Seibel. She is survived by her four children, Michael Green (Hiroko), Patricia Green, Marjorie Malloy (Mike) and Judy Green; as well as 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Carol and Jesse raised their four children during Jesse’s 30-year

career in the U.S. Air Force. They lived in California, Japan, Florida, Okinawa, Hawaii, South Carolina, Alabama, Thailand and Texas, moving 11 times in 30 years. Despite their many moves across and outside the country, they nurtured and maintained strong ties with family and friends by making it a priority to spend time with friends and family as much as possible. She and Jesse shared a love for both water- and snow-skiing and skied well into their 80s. The Greens moved to Windermere in 1976 after Jesse’s retirement from the Air Force and purchased their beloved home of 40 years on Windermere’s Second Avenue. Caroline was loved by friends and neighbors for her generosity and legendary hospitality. Carol went out of her way

to meet new neighbors and introduce them to other neighbors to make them feel at home. She taught reading for many years and later worked with Jesse in their print shop in Winter Garden. She was an active longtime volunteer for Edgewood Children’s Ranch, Orange County elementary reading programs and Church of the Messiah. With Jesse she was a strong supporter of the Rotary Club of Windermere and West Orange Habitat for Humanity. Carol remained active throughout her life with bridge club, Tai-Chi, line dancing, garden club, book group and Bible study. She and Jesse loved to travel, visiting their children across the U.S. and planning fantastic family reunions in far-flung places. The Green family Mediterranean cruise was a highlight, bringing together children and grandchildren to celebrate Carol’s 80th birthday. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 13, at the Church of the Messiah in Winter Garden. Donations to West Orange Habitat for Humanity are requested in lieu of flowers.
