IN THE KNOW BY DANIELLE HENDRIX | ASSOCIATE EDITOR
As tough of a year as 2020 was, Orlando-area artists and art enthusiasts alike banded together to prove just how tight-knit the fabric of our local arts and culture community is. Take a look at some of the great things happening in the realm of Central Florida arts.
1
CENTRAL FLORIDA ARTS ORGANIZATIONS UNITE FOR FUNDING
Each year, United Arts of Central Florida embarks on an epic fundraising campaign for the Arts for All Fund, which supports more than 60 arts and culture organizations in Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. United Arts distributes $4.9 million in grant money each year to be used for general operating support, diversity and accessibility grants, project grants and more. The 2021 Collaborative Campaign for the Arts campaign began Nov. 16, 2020, and runs
through April 30. Coordinated by United Arts in partnership with 22 arts and cultural organizations from across Central Florida, it infuses more than $2 million in to arts and culture annually. Contributions designated to the 22 campaign partners are incentivized with a 15% match by United Arts. The campaign partners are: Art & History Museums — Maitland; Bach Festival Society of Winter Park; Central Florida

ORLANDO MUSEUM OF ART NAMES NEW DIRECTOR
In February, the Orlando Museum of Art appointed Dr. Aaron De Groft as its new director and CEO. De Groft has been a museum executive for more than 20 years. He previously served 10 years as deputy director of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art — the State Art Museum — and as chief curator of the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville. De Groft holds a doctoral degree in art history from Florida State University; a master’s degree in art history and museum studies from the University of South Carolina — Columbia; and a bachelor’s degree in art history and architecture from the College of William & Mary. At OMA, De Groft will be responsible for strategic plan-

I’m confident that this, coupled by such a strong and supportive board, staff and donors, will be a catalyst for our success for the next 100 years.”

WINTER GARDEN TO CELEBRATE THE ARTS As part of the city of Winter Garden’s Love Local campaign — which launched last year to help small businesses recover from financial losses due to COVID-19 — April will be designated for celebrating the arts. City staff said the arts are an integral and enriching part of the community’s well-being, and the theme for Celebrating the Arts in April is “The World Outside.” This will include art activities and exhibitions both indoors and outdoors throughout downtown Winter Garden. On Saturday, April 17, the city will host more than 20 of these arts activities, which include classes and workshops. “A celebration of art will take place from early Saturday morning at the farmer’s market through multiple outdoor public art displays lighting up the city that night,” said Phil Self, executive director of the Winter Garden Art Association. A ticketed, curated VIP immersive art experience will take place that evening. Tickets will be $75, and funds raised will support the Winter Garden Art Association. For more, visit downtownwg.com.
ORLANDO BALLET COLLABORATES WITH JUILLIARD After the Orlando Ballet launched its inaugural Dance Accelerator program in June 2020, it was so successful that it once again will collaborate with The Juilliard School to host a second Dance Accelerator competition for choreographers to blend artistry with the business side of the performing arts. Dance Accelerator was developed and facilitated by Broadway producers Pamela and Tim Kashani, of Apples and Oranges Studios. Its goal is to use technology to create a glob- Courtesy Orlando Ballet al platform for choreographers which will be performed by to bring their creativity before Orlando Ballet dancers. industry professionals for criOrlando Ballet’s Dance Acceltique and potential investment. erator 2 is scheduled for May 1. ORLANDO PHILHARMONIC, OTHER ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVE GRANT The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra recently announced it is one of six organizations nationwide to have received a Pabst Steinmetz Foundation grant award. Established in 2018, the foundation’s mission is to support organizations and individuals working to create collaboration around projects that inspire innovation in the realms of arts and wellness. This year, the Pabst Steinmetz Foundation placed special
emphasis on funding either new programming or programs in their early stages. For the Orlando Philharmonic, the grant will support the production of a virtual edition of the 2021 Young People’s Concert, which is traditionally held at the Bob Carr Theater in non-COVID times. Other organizations to receive the award are Americans for the Arts, Bethune-Cookman University School of Performing Arts and Communication Department, Opera Orlando, Orlando Science Center and Simply Amazing.
Two Stunning Shows Outdoors, Under the Stars A Midsummer Night’s Dream March 31 - April 17, 2021 comfortable planning to attend in person, Orlando Fringe has some great new options to attend safely and still enjoy the arts. Patrons can purchase a cutout of them and their friends to help safely distance the seats in May, and the donations will help cover the festival’s operational costs. New this year is the DigiFringe program. Each show will be recorded, and other artists are being invited to present their works if they aren’t able to travel to Orlando. DigiFringe will run from June 4 to 18.
