LETTER TO THE EDITOR What’s the plan?

Dear Editor: Once again, the town of Windermere asked its residents to spend money before knowing what they were buying. No one goes to the store and stops at the cash register to give money. We spend time looking at what is available in the store and what will suit our needs. Sometimes, we even spend more than we had planned. The mayor was quoted as “believing the council had made an attractive option that limited what our debt payments could be.” But, he never told us why we needed the debt and what we were buying. Show us the plan — perhaps even give the residents several options. What will our downtown look like? Where will the police department be located, and what will the building look like? (Heaven forbid we would get an uglylooking building like our old community center.) What about the administrative building? What will they do with the old schoolhouse buildings? Does the public works have to be in the middle of downtown? Could they relocate it somewhere else? There is nothing architecturally pleasing about work trucks and equipment being stored in our historic downtown. So many options — it would be exciting! I believe residents would vote for the spending if we all knew what we were buying. JANET SGAMMA WINDERMERE

FAME The West Orange High School Hall of Fame committee announced 15 finalists to be inducted this year in the areas of arts, academia and athletics. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER

When West Orange High’s Hall of Fame was introduced in 2006 and for a decade after, only former student athletes and coaches were inducted. This year, for the first time in the Hall of Fame’s 11-year history, faculty and alumni success in academia and the arts also will be recognized. Current athletics hall-offamers have their pictures and plaques displayed in the gym. But this year, two displays will be added — one near the theater department for the arts honorees and one in the front office for the academia honorees. Peter Abatiello, who has been on staff as a coach and teacher for nearly 40 years, was one of the key players in starting the Hall of Fame 11 years ago and is ecstatic to be able to expand the program to include recognition in the areas of art and academics. “It’s always the kids who run the touchdowns who get the headlines and the others may not get any recognition, so now everyone finally gets a chance at West Orange’s Hall of Fame,” Abatiello said. “Now it includes members of band, chorus, theater (and more) who have done something upon graduation. We have a lot of smart kids who are doing great things in life.” The nominations opened to staff and school affiliates about six weeks ago. Abatiello is part of a board that includes current and former coaches, principals who went to West Orange, teachers, the band director and theater director. Based on nominations and votes collected, the board makes the final decisions. WINTER GARDEN

still can recall the mental unease of having to decide where to sit during their school’s lunch time all too well. At a young age where social anxiety often got the best of us, the sound of the dreaded lunch bell was the equivalent of hearing war drums — invoking a nervous fear that, during that life stage, had few equals. However, middle-school students at Windy Ridge K-8 School may never again need to experience such fear thanks to two

eighth-graders who together launched an initiative to create T-Shirts that read, “#YouCanSitWithMe,” inviting students to eat at their lunch table. It all started when Mae-Elizabeth Vuncannon and Danielle Dupuis noticed some students who routinely sat alone during lunch time. They invited them to sit at their table, and before they knew it, their table of five became a table of 12. They soon came up with the idea to create shirts. “We gave the shirts out to some of our friends who come sit with us at lunch,” Vuncannon said. “And what we did is they started wearing them around … and so then people started seeing them and asked, ‘What is this’ and, ‘What can we do to help?’ And then we just had more people come sit with us.” When Principal Tracy Webley heard about the girls’ shirts and mission, she liked the idea so much that she offered to let the girls create new designs and purchase shirts for the whole middle school. The 300 shirts, which finally arrived in January, now have

became a popular clothing choice for the students — an observation that has Dupuis and Vuncannon beaming with pride. “I think it really helps them interact with each other and give them a way to interact,” said Kerri Van Sickle, a school counselor at Windy Ridge. “At that age, they’re really concerned about what everybody thinks, and they’re not going to jump out there and take those risks. And our hope, too, is that it helps kids reach across all kinds of lines, whether it’s socioeconomic, race, you know, different religions — that kind of thing.” Vuncannon could relate to what the students sitting alone might have felt, because she remembered times when she would enter a new classroom where she didn’t know anyone and would wonder where to sit. Dupuis also sympathized with the students she saw sitting alone after having a similar experience in sixth grade. “In sixth grade, I didn’t really have a group with my closest friends until halfway through the year,” Dupuis said. “I guess I didn’t technically sit alone, but

I didn’t really know anybody at the table. And it kind of felt like I was sitting alone because I never really talked, but then they invited me over and we became really good friends.” The girls’ T-shirt idea is similar to the school’s Mix-It-Up Wednesday program, which encourages students to sit with people they normally don’t sit with by having everyone sit at tables according to the color shirt they wear. The goal, Van Sickle said, is to create an inclusive environment, break down social barriers and allow the kids to get to know each other, despite never sharing the same class. “We didn’t even think these shirts were going to be made, let alone this whole thing,” Vuncannon said. “It’s pretty amazing to think that we were part of all this. It’s kind of like leaving our own little legacy.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com

This year, the Evening at the Pops will take listeners into the mysterious depths of outer space as the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a program titled, “Race for Space.” The program will include several pieces by John Williams, who composed many of pop culture’s iconic themes, including the music of “Star Wars.” “It’s really great to get out into that part of the community for

the people who might not come into Orlando proper to come see us,” said Cristina Venturini, digital marketing and communications manager with the orchestra. Every year, hundreds bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy an evening of music held against the backdrop of Lake Apopka at Newton Park in Winter Garden. This year, the annual Evening at the Pops will be held on Saturday, March 25. “It’s a beautiful space to play in,” Venturini said. “It’s always SEE MUSIC PAGE 10

Henry Maxey (Max) Ireland was born in Chickamauga, Georgia, on April 25, 1932, and passed away peacefully at his home in Ormond Beach, Florida, on March 17, 2017, at the age of 84. After graduating from Chickamauga High School, Max enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. He later received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (e.g. Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, Georgia. Max began his long career in aerospace technology at the Hughes Aircraft Company as an electrical engineer before accepting a position at Martin Marietta Corporation in Orlando, Florida, where he served as the program director of six programs, including the Sprint Missile program, the Patriot Missile program and the Apache Helicopter Night Vision Fire Control System program. He then spent two-andone-half years in on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands in charge of the Sprint Missile Flight Test program. After retiring from the Martin

Marietta Corporation, he accepted the roles of president and CEO of the Coleman Aerospace Research Corporation in Orlando, and later, he established his own aerospace consulting business, where he served for 16 years until his retirement. Max served on the cutting edge of research and technology of anti-ballistic missile technology for nearly 50 years. Max enjoyed reading, golfing and traveling immensely. He lived in the states of Georgia, California, Texas, Alabama, Virginia, and Florida, as well as the Marshall Islands, and he traveled to five of the seven continents. In 1953, he married Rose Lanier. They were married for 46 years and are survived by four children. Later, he was married to Autumn (Cook) Ireland for 16 years until his passing. He is survived by four children, Steven Ireland (Dawn Ireland), Anita Hasegawa (John Hasegawa), Robin Ireland (Greg Gardner) and Ken Ireland. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his wife, Autumn Ireland. Max was a brilliant man, loved by many and respected by more. He often referred to himself as “just a small-town farm boy from Chickamauga.” He was, actually, one hell of a rocket man. A memorial service celebrating Max’s life will be at 3 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017, at Oakland Presbyterian Church, 218 Oakland Ave., Oakland, Florida 34760. Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, in Flagler Beach. Condolences may be sent to craigflaglerpalms.com.

JOHN THOMAS “TOM” SHUMAN died March 16, 2017.

John Thomas “Tom” Shuman, of Oakland, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2017 at 64 years old. He was the husband of Julie S. Shuman. They shared 29 years of marriage together. Born in Winter Garden, Florida, he was the son of Benjamin Talbert Shuman and Betty Hawthorne Shuman. Tom discovered his love for woodworking and diligently worked to perfect his craft. He built furniture and cabinets for many years. Being a fourth-generation resident of West Orange County, he developed a love for local history and never refused an opportunity to expound on it. Tom belonged to Family Christian Center in Clermont and the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation. He enjoyed playing bass guitar, going to church, studying the Bible and sharing his faith. He will be remembered for his unwavering faith in God and genuine love for people. Tom is survived by his wife, Julie; their two children, Katie and John; his sister, Mary Shuman; and his step-mother, Loretta Shuman. The Panthers secured their first Metro West crown since 2012 with a win over West Orange March 14. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

The Dr. Phillips girls lacrosse program has been good the entire time its current senior class has been on campus. The Panthers were good in 2014, finishing the season with a 14-5 record. In 2015, they went 15-3. Last spring, Dr. Phillips compiled a 13-3 record. The past three seasons have been good seasons for the program; good seasons with little details — rivals Olympia and West Orange, mainly — obstructing the path between the Panthers and great seasons. This spring, though, has revealed a Dr. Phillips squad on the cusp of greatness. With two games left in the regular season once the Panthers return from spring break, the girls are a perfect 12-0. Dr. Phillips’ last game before the break — a 21-5 victory over West Orange March 14 — was the Panthers’ first victory against the Warriors since 2014. A week earlier, on March 7, Dr. Phillips’ 20-7 victory over Olympia was the first against the Titans since 2012. Not so coincidentally, 2012 also marks the last time the Panthers were champions of the Metro West — a crown they secured this spring with the victory against the Warriors before the break. bigail Meeks keeps a pretty busy athletic calendar. The seventh-grader at Holy Family Catholic School has played soccer, basketball, track and volleyball for the Lions. But there is one sport Abigail, who goes by Abby, competes in outside of her school — and for good reason. After all, there are not many schools — public or private — that offer an equestrian team. Abigail has been competing as an equestrian through the Interscholastic Equestrian Association for the last two years. Competing in the IEA has taken Abigail

and her parents — Troy and Maria Meeks — from local competitions all the way to South Carolina in 2016 and North Carolina just recently. The family recently moved from Winter Garden to unincorporated Apopka, where they have more than two acres of land and their own horse, Brandy, who they welcomed home last July. For Abigail, though, her passion for horses was rooted in that first home in Winter Garden — and her neighbors. “I used to live behind a barn where they had all these beautiful horses,” she said. “So I’d always hop over the fence and feed them SEE DRIVEN PAGE 16

Samuel Camargo After competing in nearly a dozen golf competitions this year alone, 10-year-old Samuel Camargo took to the links in the U.S. Kids Orlando Local Tour Championship March 19 and came out on top in his age group. Samuel shot a bogey in his fifth hole and ended one over par for the tournament. While he currently trains at the West Orange Country Club, Samuel has been on golf courses since he was 4 years old.

What is the most challenging part playing golf? Mainly my temper, so I don’t celebrate too much or get too angry when I don’t do a good shot. What is your favorite part about playing golf? It’s fun to play. What is one thing that your coach, Chris Couch, has taught you? He’s taught me a lot about my

carrots. I’ve always wanted to be around them. They’re just so kind and beautiful.” Abigail’s visits to her neighbor’s horses started when she was around 3 or 4 years old. At about age 5, she hopped the fence and rode a horse for the first time — a full two years before her parents would allow it. “She would tell us (about those occasions) later on in life, and we were like, ‘You were doing what?!’” Maria Meeks said. “It’s been fun as parents.” At 7, when her legs were long enough for her to ride safely, Abigail began taking formal lessons, first at Morton Equestrian Center in Winter Garden. There, she learned it was not as simple as hopping up on the horse and saying “go.” “There was a lot more to it,” Abigail said. “I had to learn to keep my heels down when I’m on a horse, for balance.” There was plenty to learn, but it quickly became apparent to her parents that Abigail had a knack for the craft. “The horse thing was natural,” Maria said. “She’s got some natural talent there, and her skills with animals are really good, too.” Friends of the family would speculate whether Abigail was going through a phase — as children are known to do — but six years later at age 13, Abigail is as serious about it as ever. “Everybody said that (it was a phase), but she’s pretty competitive,” Maria said. “Once she’s started something, she has always finished.” Abigail, who plans to attend Bishop Moore Catholic High School once she graduates from Holy Family, said she is proud of how far she has progressed as an equestrian. She now trains with Natalie Johnson Russell (trainer/owner) and Jessica Arnold at

swing and how to fix it. But the most important thing he taught me is to keep myself calm by smiling all the time. What is your favorite part about competing in tournaments? I like winning, but I’ve learned to lose, too. Who is your favorite golfer? I don’t really have one. I mostly just follow their styles. Mainly my older sister inspired me to play golf because she’s a really good golf player. What are you planning to do for spring break? I’m going to Colombia. We’re going to visit my family and renew our visas. The last time we visited was last summer. Basically, my whole family is from there. What is the best part about visiting Colombia? The food is really good. I like to eat a lot of sancocho. It’s like a soup where they put anything in it. It’s not something you can buy here, and we can’t make it here. I also like empanadas. We can make those here, but they’re not as good. They’re better in Colombia. What is your favorite food to eat when you’re at home? That’s kind of hard, but I would probably have to say spaghetti.

ABIGAIL’S ADVICE One of Abigail Meeks’ favorite things to do is to invite friends from Holy Family Catholic School to her home in unincorporated Apopka to meet and ride the family’s horse, Brandy. Here are a few of her go-to tips for such occasions: n If you are afraid of horses, Abigail says it is best to approach them from the side. “Try to come from the side, so if the horse takes off, you’re not going to be in the way,” Abigail said. n Heels down. n Abigail says to keep your thumbs up and to not keep too tight of a rein.

Oakmore Equestrian Center in Apopka. Although she’s eager to see where the sport will continue to take her, Abigail is not putting all of her eggs in the equestrian basket — though her love for horses still guides her dreams. “I want to help people learn how to ride and become a horse trainer,” Abigail says. In the meantime, she’ll continue to compete and ride Brandy around her family’s property — sometimes reaching speeds in excess of 25 mph. And much as she was when she was a toddler handing horses carrots, Abigail is fearless. “I love them too much to be scared,” Abigail said. “I try to enjoy the moment.”

tory margin of 15.2 points per game — a number skewed by the Panthers’ tightest victory this spring, a 13-11 victory over Bishop Moore Feb. 21. And, although some in the Central Florida lacrosse community may be raising eyebrows at numbers behind Dr. Phillips’ dominance this spring, don’t count head coach Tim Morse among them. “Honestly, I did expect (it),” Morse said. “We were hurt last year. We were missing our whole midfield line. I knew going into the fall, we’d started having a lot of success against a lot of the good teams in Central Florida. ... We definitely thought we would be in this situation.”

Morse credits a lot of his team’s success to leadership — whether it is the leadership coming from expected places, such as his two seniors (Elyse Decker and Piper Johnson) who are Division I signees, or an unexpected place such as freshmen Mary Sosebee or Michelle McGrath. “You can’t tell who the best player is by their attitude,” Morse said. “In lacrosse, to be a good team, you’ve got to have great leadership — on the field and off the field. We have that.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

STARS shoot to new heights at FLAGS competition The girls of the youth swim team based at SouthWest Aquatics in Winter Garden placed first at the Florida Age Group Championships in Stuart earlier this month. SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

The boys and girls from SouthWest Aquatics’ SouthWest STARS swim team had a memorable showing at the Florida Age Group Championships March 9 to 13 in Stuart. The STARS placed second, overall, for the entire competition as a team. Additionally, the STARS girls swimmers placed first, the STARS won the 2017 Florida Swimming Sportsmanship Award, and the team also had a handful of individual and relay champions. “Finishing second, overall, is a step up for us as a team,” said Bruce Follensbee, one of the team’s coaches. “It puts us on the map. It puts everybody on notice.” According to Justin Correia, the head coach for the STARS, the girls team’s championship marks the first time in more than a decade that a program other than the Sarasota YMCA Sharks or the Bolles School Sharks have won that category. The second-place finish, overall, left only the Sarasota YMCA team ahead of the local group from SouthWest Aquatics. Additionally, for the STARS to have placed second, overall, required a complete team effort — including from the program’s boys swimmers.

“Our boys that came stepped up big time and scored a significant amount of points for us. All those things contributed to the success we had as a team,” Follensbee said. Ella Klyce (girls 10-and-under 200-yard IM), Marcela Scaramuzza (girls 14-and-under 100yard breaststroke) and Emma Sundermeyer (girls 10-andunder 500-yard freestyle) won individual championships at this year’s FLAGS competition. Additionally, the 10-and-under girls 200-yard freestyle relay and 200yard medley relay — as well as the 12-and-under girls 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay — all earned wins. In other team news, 10 more STARS represented the team last weekend at NCSA Junior Nationals meet at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. STARS swimmer Grace Khunduang was selected to attend this summer’s National Diversity Select Camp in Colorado Springs. Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.
