High-5 HERO For 18 years, Lake Whitney Elementary’s Brian Bruton, better known as Mr. B, always could be counted on for high-fives. The community mourns the loss of its beloved PE teacher, who died suddenly of a massive heart attack March 11. JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER

WINTER GARDEN

or the past 18 years at Lake Whitney Elementary School, high-fives from Mr. B were the stuff of legends. The tall PE coach would hold his hand up by his chest, and many students would have to jump in hopes to reach it. Many students have the goal be able to give Mr. B a high-five — without having to jump — by the end of their fifth-grade year. But tall enough or not, one thing was certain: Every student would get their high-five. As PE coach, Brian Bruton, better known around Lake Whitney as Mr. B, interacted with every student who went through the school for the past 18 years, giving each child too many high-fives to count. So it was a blow not only to the school but also the community at large when he died of a massive heart attack March 11. He was only 45. GIANT TEDDY BEAR

It was less than a week before the March 17 Field Day, when students looked forward to spending the day outdoors with Mr. B. When Kaelyn Kantor, a fourthgrade Lake Whitney student, goes to Field Day, Mr. B is her greatest memory. “The thing that I’m going to miss about Field Day is the activity that he does,” said Kaelyn. “It’s always the (most fun). He has you throw balls and water to each other.” Each year on the first day of school, Mr. B could be seen walking with a nervous kindergartner, carrying the child’s small backpack and giving reassurance that it would be a great day.

“He is the kindest, most gentle, positive role model any child could ever have. He was always happy, upbeat, smiling. A giant teddy bear. He was always there when you needed him.” — Kim Smirti

Mr. B is remembered for giving great high-fives and caring for everyone he encountered.

“He is the kindest, most gentle, positive role model any child could ever have,” Kim Smirti, curriculum resource teacher, said, with tears. “He was always happy, upbeat, smiling. A giant teddy bear. He was always there when you needed him.” When fourth-grader Debanhi Berrios went to Lake Whitney in second grade, Mr. B made her feel welcome. “He made me feel like I was part of the school,” Debanhi said. He also attended the annual Donuts with Dad event, but he would go to sit with the students who didn’t have anyone with them. LASTING LEGACY

He means much to his current students, but in 18 years of teaching, he has affected those who have grown up and moved on from Lake Whitney. On March 15, the West Orange High School baseball team

dedicated its game to Mr. B. Ethan Jones, a senior starter on the team, always looked forward to PE classes with Mr. B when he attended Lake Whitney. Even in elementary school, Jones loved baseball, and Mr. B encouraged him to work on his game. “He always told me to follow my dreams, and that nobody can take them from you,” Jones said. “If you want to play at the next level, high school, college or pros, you for sure can do it if you put your mind to it.” Lauren Mathis, a softball player at West Orange High School, remembers talking about wanting to play softball at the University of Georgia even in elementary school, and Mr. B encouraged her to pursue that dream. The junior is now committed to the school. But his former students also remember him for the happiness he exuded. “He was literally one of the

happiest people I have ever met,” Mathis said. “He was always so upbeat. He always had a smile on his face. He was never sad or mad about anything, or if he was, he didn’t show it. He just lived life really to the fullest. He was a great person.” Mr. B will be remembered for his colorful shoes — he had a pair of shoes to match with every outfit, and he brought his pink shoes out in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. He is survived by his wife, Vera Bruton, and his children, Jermaine Lamar, Walter Lamar, Tonique Lamar and Brian Bruton Jr. He inspired not only his students, but his children as well. Brian Bruton Jr. attended Lake Whitney soon after Mr. B was hired, and the two were called “Little B” and “Big B.” “I just remember coming out and having fun,” said Bruton Jr. “It was just always good to have your dad here and have the people look at him like I looked at him. He’s still my hero. My dad is my Superman. He’ll be the best man I always had in my mind and my life.” “He’ll be remembered through everything that I do through life,” Jermaine Lamar said. “He’s the reason that I’m a teacher. He was my first baseball coach. He was my first football coach. He taught me how to drive a car.” The teachers and administration also loved him. The office staff looked forward to his visits at the end of each school day. “I have a chair next to my desk in my office that I kick every day, and I can’t stand it there,” said Karen Hewett, the school clerk. “But I never move it, because at the end of the day, after dismissal — he used to make his rotations in the office and go to everyone’s office — that was the chair that he would sit in and chat with me for a little bit. I never wanted that chair to go away, because I always knew he was going to come and sit there.” She plans to keep the chair right where it is. He often buzzed around the office, helping with anything that the office staff and principal needed. He earned himself another nickname: “Honey B.” “He was an amazing man,” Principal Elizabeth Prince said. “He would do anything for anybody. And it’s evident by the love that he shared with the children.” At a tribute service March 16, the many tears of his current students illustrated how much Mr. B will be missed. The school currently is raising money to build a mountable high-five plaque, so although Mr. B is no longer at Lake Whitney, the students will always be able to get their high-five.

AN ACROSTIC FOR MR. B At a tribute service to Mr. B on March 16, Pastor and former Lake Whitney teacher Cynthia Thomas shared these words to comfort the students: When I think about the “M” in Mister, I think about a man of strength. When I think about the “I” in Mister, I think about how intelligent he was. When I think about the “S” in Mister, I think about how smart, and he was a sports buff. Most of the conversations that I had with him were about sports. When I think about the “T” in Mister, I think about how tall and how tough he was. When I think about the “E” in Mister, I think about how extra extra nice he was. And the “R,” he was a very respectable (man) and a man who was always ready and willing to help everyone. When I think about the “B” in Mister B, I think about what a big big big big big big heart he had. He had enough room in his heart to fit everyone he knew into it.

DONATIONS IN MR. B’S MEMORY Lake Whitney is planning a mountable high-five plaque, trees with benches, a memory capsule, and new lettering to name the PE pavilion “B’s Place.” The school would also like to provide, in Mr. B’s honor, scholarships for students he mentored. Horizon West could see new lakefront community A new 48-home residential community called Hickory Cove would sit along the east side of Hickory Nut Lake. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST If all goes to plan,

Horizon West will have a new residential community along Hickory Nut Lake in the near future. Orange County staff held a brief community meeting March 17 at Keene’s Crossing Elementary School to discuss the new planned

development with residents. The project, called Hickory Cove, would lie in Village H along Avalon Road, just west of State Road 429 and south of Seidel Road. It would consist of 48 single-family, detached homes on 25.78 net developable acres. Currently, the area is designated as an A-1 zone, or a citrus rural

district. However, along with the planned development, it is also up for a proposed rezoning to a landuse designation of estate district. The total land included in the parcel is about 67 gross acres. Applicant Ben Snyder, vice president of land acquisition and development for Hanover Capital Partners LLC, said the community would consist of both lakefront and interior lots. Residents and guests would enter the community on a public road with faux,

non-operable gates and would be greeted by fountains on each side of the entrance. The community will feature brick accents on the incoming driveway and masonry walls as a border between the community and Avalon Road. Also proposed is a boat ramp and dock with possible boardwalk. District 1 Commissioner S. Scott Boyd said normally Horizon West doesn’t allow gated communities because of internal connectivity, but this proposal and a

few in the past gained approval because there is only one way in and out. The development will go to the Development Review Committee and the Planning and Zoning Commission for recommendations. Then, the project will go before the Board of County Commissioners for a public hearing and final decision. Contact Danielle Hendrix at dhendrix@orangeobserver.com.

Core Golf unveils expansion STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST

of attaining a golf scholarship at U.S. universities. Currently, Core Golf serves about 51 students from 20 different countries. “We are prepping these students for college, and this new building will have a college dorm residence feel to it,” Jackson said. In addition to the expansion, Core Golf Academy and Core Real Estate is set to partner with Windermere Prep for student residency. Both Core Golf and Windermere Prep have had issues with finding adequate space for student housing, and Jackson said this will solve them. The partnership will allow Windermere Prep to lease a certain number of the total beds in the first phase. “It becomes much more efficient, as well as a better atmosphere, when they’re under one roof,” Jackson said. “They’ve (Windermere Prep) been looking and have gone down two or three different roads to find a residence answer, and this is it. To have everyone under one roof to mix and mingle and provide more space for these kids to live in will be much better.” Windermere Prep will not have any financial ownership, Jackson said, but rather will act as a tenant

that will have the majority of the space in Phase One. The first phase, which will take about a year to build, will cost about $16 million, Jackson said. Construction of the entire site will be somewhere between $60 million and $70 million. The next step is to obtain building permits, which will be applied for as soon as final architecture plans, studies and other technicalities are submitted. After building permits are granted, construction can move forward. And because the location is still relatively undeveloped, Jackson said they’ve really had no comments from neighbors. “We’re fortunate that where we are does not yet have a whole lot around us,” Jackson said. “Neighbor-wise, we haven’t gotten any response negatively to it, and the county commissioners had unanimous support for it. They love what we’re doing, it fit into the official plan, they love the economic development and everything academic or sports related. They’re all for it.”

this effort an investment in the healthy future of our community, which supports the district’s mission to enhance health and wellness in West Orange County.” Ohe said he is particularly excited to bring expanded cancercare services to West Orange. “At the (current UF Health Cancer Center — Orlando Health facility), we reached our fiveyear projection volumes by year two,” he said. “It is particularly important for cancer patients to be closer to treatment. It can lead to a better outcome. It’s such a stressful time for patients and their families. Pending building-permit approvals, Horizon West soon will be home to a new site plan for Core Golf Academy, which includes some housing for Windermere Preparatory School students. Tom Jackson, founder of Core Golf Academy at Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Winter Garden, said Core Real Estate purchased 23 acres — north of Old YMCA Road and west of Avalon Road, across from the golf center — in September 2014 and plans are in place to build student residence halls and a private academic facility. The company went through 2015 with the process of getting entitled, and in December, Orange County commissioners voted unanimously to change the zoning on the parcel of land and permit construction. The goal is to eventually build the three planned residence halls in phases, with the first phase to host about 194 student beds, a kitchen and a dining hall. If all goes well, Jackson hopes to break ground on Phase One this summer and open it in August 2017. The other two buildings will host about 220 student beds each. In addition, plans include a 100,000-square-foot academic facility. The remaining phases in the site plan will be built as demand warrants. No specific timeline has been set for groundbreaking on them yet. The expansion comes down to the housing of Core Golf Academy’s current students, Jackson said. Core Golf is a full-time junior residential academy that boards junior golfers and connects them with their academic partners, Windermere Preparatory School in Windermere and Central Florida Preparatory School in Gotha. UF center, agreed. “Evidence proves that patients suffering from cancer have better results when they are treated closer to home,” he said. “Each year, more than 1,200 residents living near Health Central are diagnosed with cancer. … This new facility is greatly needed.” The third project, the nursing facility, will include 60 beds for rehabilitation and another 40 for an Alzheimer’s unit. It will be located on the southeast corner of the Health Central campus and front Old Winter Garden Road. “One in three people over the age of 85 has Alzheimer’s,” said Lori Jowett, administrator of Health Central Park, the hospital’s existing skilled-nursing facility. Construction on the Horizon West hospital will begin this fall, and officials hope it is complete by the end of 2017. Construction on the Ocoee facilities should begin later this year and be complete by 2018. The construction will generate more than 500 jobs, and once fully operational, the three facilities will create more than 200 permanent health care jobs in West Orange. Changing the name from technical “school” to technical “college” could give Westside added credibility in the community. AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE COMMUNITY EDITOR WINTER GARDEN

Before it was Westside, the building that houses Westside College had a long history in West Orange education. In 1923, the Rosenwald Fund provided matching funds to construct a three-room school building on Center Street for Winter Garden’s black community. The Winter Garden School started with two teachers and 125 students. It provided instruction for grades one through eight in three classrooms. By 1941, ninth grade was added. After the move to a new campus, the school became known as Charles R. Drew High. As the community grew, Drew High, serving grades one through 12, outgrew its capacity. In 1965, William S. Maxey retired as the school’s first and only principal. Desegregation left Drew High without a future. It graduated its last class in 1969, and the school closed in the spring. In the early 1970s, several attempts were made to revive Drew as a vocational school or adult high school, and for a short time it was known as

the Charles R. Drew Training Center. The site also was briefly used for the Magnolia School for Exceptional Education until the special-education school relocated in 1973. The following year, the School Board established West Orange Adult Education Center. The name was changed to Westside to avoid confusion with the under-construction West Orange High School. The first vocational class at Westside was cabinetmaking, and the first program to be fully established was the Business Education Department. As more vocational programs were added, the school’s name was changed to Westside Vocational Technical Center. In January, the Orange County School Board changed the name of its four technical centers from OCPS Technical Education Centers to Orange Technical College. “In our high-tech world, the university isn’t the only way to get to real success, but there’s still this mindset that people want their kid to go to college.” — Mike Armbruster

O

nly 29% of Americans have a college degree, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. That means 71% either don’t have a degree or received some sort of skills training — but they are still making a good living, said Dr. Michael Armbruster, senior executive director for career and technical education for OCPS. He hopes a name change with OCPS’s technical centers can increase that percentage. The Orange County School Board changed the name of its

four technical centers from OCPS Technical Education Centers — which combines five separate disconnected campuses into one major college — to Orange Technical College in January. At the Westside campus in Winter Garden, students can get specified skills training to receive licensure and industry certifications — and they can obtain college credit through a new partnership with Valencia College. The Tech Express program allows Westside students to earn credits toward an associate’s degree. “For instance, a student who takes a (class such as) welding, electrical and diesel mechanic, if they complete the program here, if they go and enroll in the A.S. program at Valencia, they get 23 credit hours for having completed it at Westside,” Armbruster said. “The point of the name change for us is there’s a sliver of people who won’t go to a tech center, but they’ll go to a technical college,” he said. “For me, the name is not the issue. But if one student who wants to come here because it’s a technical college, I’m all for that.” An enrollment increase would mean more opportunities for high-skill, high-wage jobs, he said, and this will have a positive impact on the 71% of people who don’t have a four-year degree. “The university isn’t the only way to get to real success, but there’s still this mindset that people want their kid to go to college,” Armbruster said. Florida has 48 technical centers; 34 have changed their name to include “college.” “If a kid wants to be a welder at age 19, he can do that — but maybe at age 30, he’s tired of the hot shop and wants to own his own welding shop,” Armbruster said. “He would need an A.S. degree for that — and the Tech Express partnership would help him or her reach this goal. “We’re in the transition of college mindset and qualified workforce, and we’re the bridge to that,” he said.

Metal (Wo)men Two female students are proving they have the skills to earn certification in the maledominated welding profession.

Before Christmas.” Slater found Westside while searching for alternatives to art school and four-year colleges, which she didn’t consider a good fit. “There’s something very, very rewarding about making something with your hands,” Slater said.

Slater sees potential in every piece of metal. Bent rods become tiaras, and nuts, washers and tiny gears become the jewels. “I make a lot of tiaras,” Slater said. “I’m still perfecting the process. They all have their own personality, and they have their own wand.” She found the perfect wand handle recently when she was in the scrap metal trailer at Westside College, where she is enrolled in the welding program. When her instructor, Vishnu “Vinny” Persaud, went looking for her that day, he saw her out there, an old socket wrench in her hand. “Vinny had to actually physically remove me from the scrap trailer because I was in there digging,” Slater said. “I said, ‘This isn’t scrap metal; this is a wand.’ He just looked at me.” Slater and Emily Wolcott, both 26, are used to the stares: They are the only females getting an education in welding at Westside. “When I first started, there was a group of guys here, and they were all really great, but they almost wanted to be too helpful,” Slater said. “I would be grinding, and they would come over and try to help and end up taking over.”

AFTER CERTIFICATION

They both agreed that they have learned to handle the “shop talk.” “At first, they don’t know whether to be polite,” Slater said. “But then they find we’re OK and they can talk shop. They’re like, ‘OK, she’s cool and can hang.’” WHY WELDING?

Wolcott’s father works in design, and one of the welders in his shop graduated from Westside’s program. This piqued her interest, so she signed up for classes. Her ultimate goal is to get into design work herself. “It would be tight to work for museums that deal with design-y stuff,” Wolcott said. Wolcott admits she lacked direction after dropping out of college several times. “I like the academic setting, but

it wasn’t working out,” she said. “Technical school was always on my radar, so I started looking at what certificates or accreditations could I get in a few years. From that, I started assessing the aspects of life mixed with my work habits. “I wanted something I can feel proud of,” Wolcott said. “Working through your problems and coming out on the other side and feeling good about it.” Slater, who always has been drawn to art, said a high-school art teacher convinced her welding was the best way to create largescale pieces in a short amount of time. Examples of her work sit on a shelf in the welding classroom: a wrapped package with a bow on top and the bony hands of Jack Skellington from “The Nightmare

Slater, who lives in Orlando, entered the welding program last summer and will graduate in May. She said she’s open to the different job possibilities her certification will provide. “There are fabricating jobs, which my dad would like me to do because it’s relatively safe, and there’s structural jobs, where I would climb things, welding beams — but my dad doesn’t really want me to do that,” she said. “I kind of really want to climb things.” Wolcott, a Lake Nona resident, started the program in January and will graduate at the end of the year. She would like to get some job-site experience first, but her goal is to work on the I-4 Ultimate project. Slater once owned a horseboarding barn in Orlando, but she realized the lifelong dream didn’t live up to her expectations. This will be completely different. “It’s nice to have a skill that not a lot of people have,” she said. “Once you have the basic skill set, there’s so much you can do with it.”

WESTSIDE WELDING CLOCK HOURS: 1,050 DESCRIPTION: Students learn technical skills to prepare them for employment and advanced training for a variety of occupations in the welding industry. The training includes the use of blueprints and/or shop drawings, use of gases and/or welding processes. Lab activities include various processes and techniques of oxyacetylene cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and pipe welding. CERTIFICATION: After the program, students take the exam for Certified Welder, American Welding Society. If they are enrolled in an Associate in Arts degree program, they are eligible for articulated credits at Valencia College.

Ariel (A146612) is a pretty kitty looking for a loving home. The 6-year-old cat was surrendered because her owner could no longer care for her. She is a little shy, but she is a sweet cat who will purr as soon as you pet her. You’ll get the best of both worlds with Ariel, as she is playful but also a lap cat. She was surrendered with another cat, Merrie (A049280). Ariel would love to be adopted with Merrie if possible; however, Ariel would be fine on her own.

its recent $3 million donation toward the development of UCF’s downtown Orlando campus, Dr. Phillips Charities is the single-largest private contributor to the new campus to date. Downtown Orlando already is home to UCF’s Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, and according to the university, the new campus will bring 7,700 UCF and Valencia College students downtown and offer degree programs that align with emerging industries there. DP Charities’ gift will help fund construction of the campus’ first academic building and brings total community support for the project up to $16 million. Other private donors up to this point include the Orlando Magic, CFE Federal Credit Union and Florida Hospital. The total cost for the building is $60 million, but one-third will be funded by the community, one-third will come directly from UCF, and the last portion will be funded by the state. DP Charities’ relationship with UCF dates back to the 1960s, when Howard Phillips, son of Dr. P. Phillips, started giving to UCF. DP Charities President and CEO Kenneth D. Robinson said, to date, the organization has seven different endowments, worth $5.9 million total. It also has three different capital campaigns with UCF, having helped fund $2.5

ARTS + CULTURE

Pint-sized PICASSOS FRANKLIN WEISS

Grade: Fourth Piece: Movement Art Franklin was inspired to create this piece based on an original artist who created a work displaying movement, though he couldn’t recall the artist’s name. “I guess that you can see the movement in the people in the picture of because of the little lines,” he said, pointing to lines protruding from the people in the work. When asked who inspires his art, Franklin thought for a moment and said: “I don’t know. I really just do whatever pops into my head.” He also said art teacher Amy Cheesebrew was a great source of inspiration.

Grade: Fifth Piece: Australian Dot Art Sophia’s work was inspired by the beauty of roses and an enjoyment of literature. “I liked how people would draw roses and so I thought maybe I could do that,” Sophia said. “I put it on the turtle with different colors. The rose on the turtle’s shell was supposed to be this rose from the book that I read, called ‘Geronimo Stilton.’ I read the book, and so, I really liked how they had to find the rose and give it to the princess, and so, the princess was really pretty. The rose went with her outfit, and her hair, and it was so cool.”

Grade: Third Piece: Japanese Origami Passion for his work inspired Eduardo. “I like origami,” he said. “It’s fun, and it’s challenging.” His teacher, Jamie Ruiz — who is also his inspiration — instructed him to make flowers with origami.

COLE HIMES, 5, AND HEATHER HIMES. Cole’s father was tickling Cole one day when he felt something hard in Cole’s abdomen. When he took Cole to the doctor the next day, it began the journey to discover the 2-year-old had ganglioneuroblastoma. The tumor was removed, and Cole is now cancer free. At five years, the cancer will be considered cured — so Cole has two years to go.

NOLAN KING, 2. Nolan was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma in January. He currently is undergoing his third segment of chemotherapy treatments. It’s been a difficult journey for his parents. “We’re just in the midst of chaos, settling into a new life ahead,” said his father, Tony King. “It’s survival mode right now. We’re trying to find the new normal. We’re realizing that it’s a long road. For us, it’s at least a year-and-a-half to five years.”

HIGH

WHAT A RIDE 5 Windermere native and Olympia High alumnus Trevor Siemian, now a Denver Broncos quarterback, talks about adjusting to the NFL, suiting up for the Super Bowl and learning under Peyton Manning.

1

One of Central Florida’s most high-profile sporting events was in Bay Hill this past weekend with the annual playing of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Jason Day finished at -17 to place first.

What was going through your mind as you were drafted by the Broncos? I was coming out of an ACL injury and injured my knee in the secondto-last game of my senior year (at Northwestern University). Throughout the process, I was really focused on getting my knee healthy. Once I was on track there, getting drafted was obviously very exciting. The Broncos have a great coaching staff and great teammates. I was pretty ecstatic when I got drafted.

2

Aaron Bogovic pitched six scoreless innings and struck out six batters for the Olympia baseball team (107) in a 6-0 victory against Lyman March 18.

3

Alvin Bryant Jr. ran the fastest time in the 200-meter dash in Central Florida this year at The First Academy’s Royal Invitational March 19. Bryant won with a time of 21.68 seconds.

What has it been like acclimating to the NFL? Is it different from what you expected? It’s a change for sure, as far as a quarterback learning a new offense system and terminology. Trying to acclimate myself to our scheme and terminology was challenging but exciting at the same time. It’s another step up and adjustment you’ve got to make. It was a challenge, but I definitely had a good time adjusting.

4

Windermere Prep junior hoops star David Nickelberry was back on the hardwood over the weekend at the Hoop Exchange / SourceHoops Travel Team Jamboree. Nickelberry helped lead his travel team, Showtime Hoops 17U, to an impressive 51-45 victory against Each 1 Teach 1.

5

The West Orange baseball team arrived in the national polls this week, with USA Today listing the Warriors (14-1) at No. 13 in its latest rankings. Last week’s action for West Orange included an extrainning victory over The First Academy March 17, 5-4.

O

lympia High and Northwestern University alumnus Trevor Siemian recently finished his rookie season as a third-string quarterback for the Denver Broncos, having learned under Peyton Manning during the legendary quarterback’s final season and received his first Super Bowl ring. The Windermere native was drafted in the seventh round

of the 2015 NFL Draft and made his regular-season debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 20, 2015. Most recently, with the retirement of Manning and the departure of Brock Osweiler through free agency, Siemian is presented with a unique chance to show how far he has progressed and what he can do in the Mile-High City. Drenis Ozuna

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19

How has the NFL experience been for you? It’s been awesome; I was fortunate enough to be in with Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler, so it was a good opportunity for me to learn a lot. Every day, I learned something new. For me, I wanted to come in with an open mind and get to work and soak in as much as I could. It was an unbelievable ride, and I was happy to be a part of it. Describe your Super Bowl experience and being on the roster for it. It was awesome. You go to the playoffs, and everyone really reached for that. It’s a tournament-style play, so you’ve got to win each week. Seeing that unfold to the Super Bowl and playing the biggest game in North America was unreal, and we had a great, focused team. There are a lot of distractions and things outside the game going on, but it was really impressive overall.

Drenis Ozuna, a senior on the Olympia baseball team, went 2-for-5 in a 10-7 win versus Oviedo March 15. He hit a threerun walk-off homer — his fourth home run this season — as part of a four-RBI game and has been batting better than .400 this season. The Titans have been playing in the Florida Collegiate Summer League Spring Break Tournament this week.

Could you take us through the walk-off homer you had against Oviedo? I thought (the pitcher) had me at 0-2, and then he hung a curve ball, and then I just hit a three-run homer to win the game. Was this your first walkoff? Not the first time, but in high school, yeah. How did the 6-0 victory March 18 at Lyman (Longwood) go? I went 1-for-3. I just crossed the plate twice, and that was it. I had a single and a walk. What do you enjoy most about playing center field? Chasing down balls, running around, basically. I got to read the ball, make diving plays. You can rob doubles, throw people out.

Bats/Throws: Right/ Right Position: Center fielder Height: 6 feet Birthdate: Feb. 12, 1998 Birthplace: Kissimmee

How did it feel to receive a Super Bowl ring in your rookie season? I try not to take it for granted, because a lot of guys have played a long time with awesome careers who don’t even get a chance to play in that game. I was soaking it all in, and it was something I was really lucky to be a part of, on such a great team, and it’s something I’ll never forget.

run, steal, throw. And I grew up watching him. The (catch on) Barry Bonds I watched at least a hundred times in the All-Star Game. What’s your favorite class in school? I would have to say I don’t know, really. I’d say team sports (laughs) What are your plans for after high school? Probably going to community college, South Florida State College.

How does it feel to have trained under and learned from Peyton Manning? It was an awesome experience, and I’m very fortunate I got a year from him, to see how he prepares and leads and how he played the game. There was a

lot of observing — how he went about his business and how he was professional the whole way through. There’s nobody better than him in my eyes. There’s not much Peyton hasn’t seen, so he’s pretty aware of everything. Now that Peyton has retired and Brock Osweiler has moved to the Texans, what does this mean for you? You have to be ready for anything year in and year out. I’ll have new room to adjust to, but I’m lucky I’ll be in the same system another year. I’ll be building on what I started last year and working through it. I’m excited to get back to it.

point to Boone in the first game of the season, the Dr. Phillips girls flag football team has outscored its opponents 125-0 in four games. The Panthers (4-1) were perfect on defense once again March 16, topping the host Olympia Titans 32-0. Dr. Phillips junior quarterback Kaylee Messina set a school record for completions in a game when she connected on 32 attempts, easily besting the previous mark of 25. Messina connected on touchdown passes to Jordin Ferguson (2), Brooke Harrigan, Tiffany Tolbert and Gianna Fischetti. The big victory came a day after the Panthers blanked Cypress Creek, 13-0. In that contest, Messina found Tolbert and Shiquila Bryant for touchdown strikes. On March 14, Dr. Phillips scored its most decisive win of the season, routing Evans 42-0. On March 9 the Panthers got their first win of the campaign, a 38-0 blowout against Winter Park. The sole blemish on Dr. Phillips’ resume is a 20-19 loss to Boone in the opener March 7.

Dr. Phillips junior Kaylee Messina set a school record for completions in one game (32) against Olympia March 16.

Even with the loss to Boone, the Panthers’ defense is allowing just four points per game while the offense is averaging 28.8 points per game. For her part, Messina has connected on an impressive 19 touchdown strikes. Olympia is 0-4 and will look for its first victory on the road March 29 at Lake Nona (1-2). The loss to the Panthers was the largest margin of defeat of the season for the Titans, who have been more competitive in losses to Boone (28-6, March 14), Colonial (18-12, March 8) and University (20-0, March 7). Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

UP NEXT n For Dr. Phillips: The Panthers will return from spring break and host Timber Creek (3-1) at 7 p.m. March 30. After a road game April 4 at University, Dr. Phillips will return home April 6 to host West Orange. n For Olympia: The Titans will take to the road after spring break, traveling to Lake Nona (1-2) March 29. After road games March 30 and April 4, Olympia returns home April 6 to play Timber Creek.

a little more than three-and-one-half years ago when De’jon Everson came to the campus of Foundation Academy to work for the school maintenance staff. Since then, Everson has lent a hand wherever he could. The former college basketball player helped coach the boys varsity program, the boys junior varsity and middle-school programs, the boys and girls track and cross-country programs, and this past winter, he was the head coach for the girls varsity basketball program. The passion he brought to all of those previous roles was rewarded recently when he was named the head coach of the boys varsity basketball program after former coach Al Peterson left the program two weeks ago. “It was always one of my dreams to get a head-coaching job,” Everson said. “I’m just happy with the situation.” Everson’s new role will include overseeing all of the school’s basketball programs, including the girls team he just coached to a district championship and playoff appearance. Replacing him in the role as girls’ head coach is Everson’s cousin, Tyree Crutchfield, who was an assistant for the team this past season. Although this will be Everson’s first go-round as a varsity head

In his first season coaching Foundation Academy’s girls varsity team, De’jon Everson saw his girls win a district championship and make a playoff appearance.

coach in boys basketball, he comes in with plenty of familiarity with the Lions’ players, many of whom he coached at the middle-school or junior-varsity levels. Originally from Georgia, Everson played basketball collegiately, first at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College before finishing his career at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. After he concluded his playing career at TNU, he served for two seasons as a graduate assistant, getting the ball rolling on his coaching career. Now, with just one senior leaving the program because of graduation, Everson is optimistic about the future. “Give me six or seven guys that will run through the wall for me, and I’m going to be successful,” Everson said.
