High-5 HERO For 18 years, Lake Whitney Elementary’s Brian Bruton, better known as Mr. B, always could be counted on for high-fives. The community mourns the loss of its beloved PE teacher, who died suddenly of a massive heart attack March 11. JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER

WINTER GARDEN

or the past 18 years at Lake Whitney Elementary School, high-fives from Mr. B were the stuff of legends. The tall PE coach would hold his hand up by his chest, and many students would have to jump in hopes to reach it. Many students have the goal be able to give Mr. B a high-five — without having to jump — by the end of their fifth-grade year. But tall enough or not, one thing was certain: Every student would get their high-five. As PE coach, Brian Bruton, better known around Lake Whitney as Mr. B, interacted with every student who went through the school for the past 18 years, giving each child too many high-fives to count. So it was a blow not only to the school but also the community at large when he died of a massive heart attack March 11. He was only 45. GIANT TEDDY BEAR

It was less than a week before the March 17 Field Day, when students looked forward to spending the day outdoors with Mr. B. When Kaelyn Kantor, a fourthgrade Lake Whitney student, goes to Field Day, Mr. B is her greatest memory. “The thing that I’m going to miss about Field Day is the activity that he does,” said Kaelyn. “It’s always the (most fun). He has you throw balls and water to each other.” Each year on the first day of school, Mr. B could be seen walking with a nervous kindergartner, carrying the child’s small backpack and giving reassurance that it would be a great day.

“He is the kindest, most gentle, positive role model any child could ever have. He was always happy, upbeat, smiling. A giant teddy bear. He was always there when you needed him.” — Kim Smirti

Mr. B is remembered for giving great high-fives and caring for everyone he encountered.

“He is the kindest, most gentle, positive role model any child could ever have,” Kim Smirti, curriculum resource teacher, said, with tears. “He was always happy, upbeat, smiling. A giant teddy bear. He was always there when you needed him.” When fourth-grader Debanhi Berrios went to Lake Whitney in second grade, Mr. B made her feel welcome. “He made me feel like I was part of the school,” Debanhi said. He also attended the annual Donuts with Dad event, but he would go to sit with the students who didn’t have anyone with them. LASTING LEGACY

He means much to his current students, but in 18 years of teaching, he has affected those who have grown up and moved on from Lake Whitney. On March 15, the West Orange High School baseball team

dedicated its game to Mr. B. Ethan Jones, a senior starter on the team, always looked forward to PE classes with Mr. B when he attended Lake Whitney. Even in elementary school, Jones loved baseball, and Mr. B encouraged him to work on his game. “He always told me to follow my dreams, and that nobody can take them from you,” Jones said. “If you want to play at the next level, high school, college or pros, you for sure can do it if you put your mind to it.” Lauren Mathis, a softball player at West Orange High School, remembers talking about wanting to play softball at the University of Georgia even in elementary school, and Mr. B encouraged her to pursue that dream. The junior is now committed to the school. But his former students also remember him for the happiness he exuded. “He was literally one of the

happiest people I have ever met,” Mathis said. “He was always so upbeat. He always had a smile on his face. He was never sad or mad about anything, or if he was, he didn’t show it. He just lived life really to the fullest. He was a great person.” Mr. B will be remembered for his colorful shoes — he had a pair of shoes to match with every outfit, and he brought his pink shoes out in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. He is survived by his wife, Vera Bruton, and his children, Jermaine Lamar, Walter Lamar, Tonique Lamar and Brian Bruton Jr. He inspired not only his students, but his children as well. Brian Bruton Jr. attended Lake Whitney soon after Mr. B was hired, and the two were called “Little B” and “Big B.” “I just remember coming out and having fun,” said Bruton Jr. “It was just always good to have your dad here and have the people look at him like I looked at him. He’s still my hero. My dad is my Superman. He’ll be the best man I always had in my mind and my life.” “He’ll be remembered through everything that I do through life,” Jermaine Lamar said. “He’s the reason that I’m a teacher. He was my first baseball coach. He was my first football coach. He taught me how to drive a car.” The teachers and administration also loved him. The office staff looked forward to his visits at the end of each school day. “I have a chair next to my desk in my office that I kick every day, and I can’t stand it there,” said Karen Hewett, the school clerk. “But I never move it, because at the end of the day, after dismissal — he used to make his rotations in the office and go to everyone’s office — that was the chair that he would sit in and chat with me for a little bit. I never wanted that chair to go away, because I always knew he was going to come and sit there.” She plans to keep the chair right where it is. He often buzzed around the office, helping with anything that the office staff and principal needed. He earned himself another nickname: “Honey B.” “He was an amazing man,” Principal Elizabeth Prince said. “He would do anything for anybody. And it’s evident by the love that he shared with the children.” At a tribute service March 16, the many tears of his current students illustrated how much Mr. B will be missed. The school currently is raising money to build a mountable high-five plaque, so although Mr. B is no longer at Lake Whitney, the students will always be able to get their high-five. Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@orangeobserver.com.

AN ACROSTIC FOR MR. B At a tribute service to Mr. B on March 16, Pastor and former Lake Whitney teacher Cynthia Thomas shared these words to comfort the students: When I think about the “M” in Mister, I think about a man of strength. When I think about the “I” in Mister, I think about how intelligent he was. When I think about the “S” in Mister, I think about how smart, and he was a sports buff. Most of the conversations that I had with him were about sports. When I think about the “T” in Mister, I think about how tall and how tough he was. When I think about the “E” in Mister, I think about how extra extra nice he was. And the “R,” he was a very respectable (man) and a man who was always ready and willing to help everyone. When I think about the “B” in Mister B, I think about what a big big big big big big heart he had. He had enough room in his heart to fit everyone he knew into it.

DONATIONS IN MR. B’S MEMORY Lake Whitney is planning a mountable high-five plaque, trees with benches, a memory capsule, and new lettering to name the PE pavilion “B’s Place.” The school would also like to provide, in Mr. B’s honor, scholarships for students he mentored. Some family members opened the vigil by thanking residents for attending and spoke of memories of Antwan.

Friends, family grieve for teen shot, killed in Ocoee The Ocoee community held a candlelight vigil at Starke Lake March 15 in memory of 15-year-old Antwan Davis. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER OCOEE Two of

Antwan Davis’ friends ran down the loading dock at Starke Lake March 15. One jumped off the end into the water yelling, “For Antwan!” as the other documented it on Snapchat. It was exactly the kind of goofy shenanigans in which the 15-yearold Ocoee middle-schooler loved to participate. Antwan was shot in the head March 12 as he walked on North Lakewood Avenue. He was found dead, lying on a sidewalk near Anderson Place, just before midnight. His death was one of three fatal shootings in Orange County in less than three days. The other two occurred at the Silver Hills apartments in Orlando and in Apopka. Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies have said Antwan had been involved in ongoing disputes with other neighborhood teens. Hundreds of Antwan’s friends and family gathered at the lake’s boat docks at 8 p.m. March 15 for a candlelight vigil in his memory. Some shared their sentiments about the fun-loving teen with a bright personality. “It’s hard for me to stay up here and keep my composure, but they (family) needed a voice,” said Tiffany Long, Antwan’s aunt. “Antwan needed a voice. They took his voice from him, but they didn’t take ours from him, and we will continue every day to refresh everybody’s mind of the incident,

the crime and the life that was taken.” Two large pictures of Antwan rested on easels with flowers adorning them. Friends and family grieved, leaning on and hugging each other in a symbol of support. Some held on to red, white and purple balloons that would be released later on. And as more than 250 candles were passed out and lit, the lake’s shore was illuminated by the candlelight and the sound of voices singing “Amazing Grace.” “It’s a lot of support back behind us, on top of the broken hearts and the sadness, and the heartache that an individual took away from us,” Long said. “He was a one-of-a-kind kid, and with the childishness of someone’s act that took him away from us, we’re here and we did this for him, for family and friends, to show that people were there for him.” The teen, a former Ocoee Middle School student, was working on getting enrolled in virtual school. Another aunt, Nicole Bomia, said he had some difficulties learning, but he was set to prove everyone wrong. “That was the last conversation

that most of us had with him: He was going to prove us all wrong, he was going to go back to school, he was going to do something with his life,” Bomia said. “He was trying to find himself, trying to find who he was, and he’s never found it. He’ll never have the chance to find it.” His family remembers him as a smart, curious teen with a contagious laugh and vibrant personality. “When he laughed, you couldn’t help but laugh,” Long said. “His favorite question he would always ask is, ‘What if?’ ‘What if this happened?’ or ‘What if I did this?’ He was always full of curiosity and wanted to go into things openminded. He was very outgoing, and just loving and caring.” Antwan’s killer, Michael Anderson, has since been arrested, and Antwan’s family thanked the community for their help in stepping forward with information throughout the process. They also emphasized a non-violent approach, adding that their goal was not to incite any type of violence or riots but rather to focus on peace and justice. “Regardless, this family will not stop fighting for justice for Antwan Davis,” Long said. ARREST MADE IN DAVIS HOMICIDE Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and the OCSO Homicide Squad announced the arrest of 17-year-old Michael Anderson Friday, March 18, for Antwan Davis’ murder. Sheriff’s Office investigators said they found Anderson hiding in the woods near South Orange Blossom Trail and Piedmont Wekiwa Road. They also arrested Anderson’s girlfriend, 18-year-old Lindsey Shirley, for accessory after the fact and tampering with evidence.

“He was trying to find himself, trying to find who he was, and he’s never found it. He’ll never have the chance to find it.”

Ocoee approves charter school

“It can increase demand for rentals at (nearby) apartment complexes,” de la Portilla said. “If you increase the demand for rentals, you increase value. If you increase value, you increase tax bases to the city, so the city can directly benefit.” Ocoee residents continued to express their differing opinions on the proposal. Representatives of nearby property owners said the site was not large enough to meet state standards of 15 acres for such a school and also presented access concerns. Foster parent Ken Baer said a school in that area has been needed, and public schools have not adequately handled specialneeds children, such as a daughter he adopted who got better care from KCC. Overcrowding in local public schools must be addressed, he said. CSUSA representatives said construction could take just 23 weeks, based on using the same construction company for its schools. That timeframe would make a completion date of Aug. 23 — eight days after Orange County Public Schools’ first day of the 2016-17 school year. But officials said construction would be completed in time. The CSUSA school will have a capacity of 1,145 students. Its first year will feature grades kindergarten through sixth, with seventh and eighth grades added in the following years.

The Ocoee City Commission voted 4-1 in favor of a CSUSA school during a special March 15 meeting. ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER OCOEE This school

year is the first for Kids Community College in Ocoee, but it is also the last for KCC as Ocoee’s newest charter school. The Ocoee City Commission made that official by a 4-1 vote during its March 15 special meeting, held solely for a decision on Charter Schools USA’s proposal for a charter school on West Road, just east of Fountains West Shopping Center. Commissioners had voted March 1 to honor CSUSA officials’ request to delay this amendment to the Arbours at Crown Point PUD, based on a desire to see updated traffic data close to completion. That data varied from Ocoee’s traffic study, which indicated 3,433 trips for the PUD with the CSUSA plan, less than a maximum of 5,161 trips. The new CSUSA study showed 1,855 trips. City Planner Mike Rumer stressed the city study’s recommendation for a dedicated U-turn lane at the intersection of Ocoee-Apopka and West roads. Conditions of approval included paying impact fees, three signal warrant analyses, paying for any necessary traffic light construction, building out a full road in the back, adding no commercial property and hiring police to direct traffic when necessary. District 1 Commissioner John Grogan had hosted a community meeting Feb. 8 at Ocoee City Hall to allow representatives of Charter Schools USA and its develop-

ment team to present their case. “I voted no for the Kids Community College straight through,” Grogan said. “I was against that because of the location. ... There’s no question that our kids need schools. Westyn Bay, when they were going in there, they were promised a school — that’s one of the reasons they all moved in there.” But that was about nine years ago, Grogan said, with thousands more residences on the way in northern Ocoee. District 4 Commissioner Joel Keller elaborated on what he called a debt of two or three public schools Orange County Public Schools owed Ocoee. “I’ve been in Sawmill for 26 years now,” Keller said. “When I got into Sawmill, my wife was pregnant, and they said to us, ‘By the time you have your child ... you’ll have a school right there.’

My daughter graduated college before that school was built. ... We approved a school on Ingram Road — it never got built.” CSUSA previously had received approval for a school at the northeast corner of the intersection of North Clarke and A.D. Mims roads, but its contract expired in October, which Keller said he had killed. He mentioned misgivings about the charter lottery process not giving Ocoee children preference over children elsewhere in Orange County, which the audience applauded. Keller previously had reported commercials airing as early as January, in which parents were encouraged to register their children for Renaissance Charter School at Westyn Bay, opening in August 2016. District 2 Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen — who did not want to delay action on this matter —

voted against the school. “I’m not opposed to charter schools,” Wilsen said. “I’m going to be voting on the best use of the property as it affects the residents of Ocoee and the future land use of the joint property on the (State Road) 429 corridor.” Mayor Rusty Johnson said he had changed his mind based on talking to residents in that vicinity. “It’s about people wanting choice for their children,” Johnson said. “More people from Westyn Bay wanted it than not.” District 3 Commissioner Angel de la Portilla, in his likely penultimate meeting as interim commissioner, voted for CSUSA’s plan.

I didn’t want to get a

COLONOSCOPY. But it

SAVED MY LIFE. Lisa knew something was wrong. Afraid of being told she would need a colonoscopy, she suffered with uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms and bleeding for nearly a year before telling her doctor. Her concerns over the procedure seemed small when the colonoscopy discovered Stage-3 colon cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated death in the U.S. If caught early, it’s 90 percent curable. Get screened today by a Florida Hospital Medical Group physician.

Westside Campus Senior Director Crystal Davidson

How does a technical college differ from a traditional college? “We aren’t theory-driven; we are competency-based instruction,” said Dr. Michael Armbruster, senior executive director for career and technical education for OCPS. “A welder doesn’t just read a book and take a test. He has to show that he knows it.” Orange Technical College Westside Campus Senior Director Crystal Davidson added: “(In) pretty much every class, we have had classroom instruction and a lab. What you learn in the classroom you actually go and do in the lab. Our teachers have to sign off.” There is also a difference between licensure programs and training programs. Licensure programs such as cosmetology and massage therapy require a license from the state to work.

He hopes a name change with OCPS’s technical centers can increase that percentage. The Orange County School Board changed the name of its four technical centers from OCPS Technical Education Centers — which combines five separate disconnected campuses into one major college — to Orange Technical College in January. At the Westside campus in Winter Garden, students can get specified skills training to receive licensure and industry certifications — and they can obtain college credit through a new partnership with Valencia College. The Tech Express program allows Westside students to earn credits toward an associate’s degree. “For instance, a student who takes a (class such as) welding, electrical and diesel mechanic, if they complete the program here, if they go and enroll in the A.S. program at Valencia, they get 23 credit hours for having completed it at Westside,” Armbruster said. “The point of the name change for us is there’s a sliver of people who won’t go to a tech center, but they’ll go to a technical college,” he said. “For me, the name is not the issue. But if one student who wants to come here because it’s a technical college, I’m all for that.” An enrollment increase would mean more opportunities for

high-skill, high-wage jobs, he said, and this will have a positive impact on the 71% of people who don’t have a four-year degree. “The university isn’t the only way to get to real success, but there’s still this mindset that people want their kid to go to college,” Armbruster said. Florida has 48 technical centers; 34 have changed their name to include “college.” “If a kid wants to be a welder at age 19, he can do that — but maybe at age 30, he’s tired of the hot shop and wants to own his own welding shop,” Armbruster said. “He would need an A.S. degree for that — and the Tech Express partnership would help him or her reach this goal. “We’re in the transition of college mindset and qualified workforce, and we’re the bridge to that,” he said. Slater sees potential in every piece of metal. Bent rods become tiaras, and nuts, washers and tiny gears become the jewels. “I make a lot of tiaras,” Slater said. “I’m still perfecting the process. They all have their own personality, and they have their own wand.” She found the perfect wand handle recently when she was in the scrap metal trailer at Westside College, where she is enrolled in the welding program. When her instructor, Vishnu “Vinny” Persaud, went looking for her that day, he saw her out there, an old socket wrench in her hand. “Vinny had to actually physically remove me from the scrap trailer because I was in there digging,” Slater said. “I said, ‘This isn’t scrap metal; this is a wand.’ He just looked at me.” Slater and Emily Wolcott, both 26, are used to the stares: They are the only females getting an education in welding at Westside. “When I first started, there was a group of guys here, and they were all really great, but they almost wanted to be too helpful,” Slater said. “I would be grinding, and they would come over and try to

help and end up taking over.” They both agreed that they have learned to handle the “shop talk.” “At first, they don’t know whether to be polite,” Slater said. “But then they find we’re OK and they can talk shop. They’re like, ‘OK, she’s cool and can hang.’” Wolcott’s father works in design, and one of the welders in his shop graduated from Westside’s program. This piqued her interest, so she signed up for classes. Her ultimate goal is to get into design work herself. “It would be tight to work for museums that deal with design-y stuff,” Wolcott said. Wolcott admits she lacked direction after dropping out of college several times. “I like the academic setting, but it wasn’t working out,” she said. “I didn’t like my job. Technical school was always on my radar, so I started looking at what certificates or accreditations could I get in a few years. From that, I started assessing the aspects of life mixed with my work habits. I like working with my hands, and I like that (welding is) everything from building boats and buildings to fine art. … It’s such a core foundation of all infrastructure around

the world, so you can do a lot of things with it. I like the challenge. “I wanted something I can feel proud of,” Wolcott said. “Working through your problems and coming out on the other side and feeling good about it.” Slater, who always has been drawn to art, said a high-school art teacher convinced her welding was the best way to create largescale pieces in a short amount of time. Examples of her work sit on a shelf in the welding classroom: a wrapped package with a bow on top and the bony hands of Jack Skellington from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Slater found Westside while searching for alternatives to art school and four-year colleges, which she didn’t consider a good fit. “There’s something very, very rewarding about making something with your hands,” Slater said.

AFTER CERTIFICATION

Slater, who lives in Orlando, entered the welding program last summer and will graduate in May. She said she’s open to the different job possibilities her certification will provide. “There are fabricating jobs, which my dad would like me to do because it’s relatively safe, and there’s structural jobs, where I would climb things, welding beams — but my dad doesn’t really want me to do that,” she said. “I kind of really want to climb things.” Wolcott, a Lake Nona resident, started the program in January and will graduate at the end of the year. She would like to get some job-site experience first, but her goal is to work on the I-4 Ultimate project, which is enhancing Interstate 4 from Kirkman Road to State Road 434. Slater once owned a horseboarding barn in Orlando, but she

realized the lifelong dream didn’t live up to her expectations. March 15 Ocoee elections, voters in Ocoee District 3 could not reach a majority to elect a candidate to replace Interim District 3 Commissioner Angel de la Portilla. This normally would lead to Ocoee’s third avoidable election since October, a run-off between the two candidates with the most votes, per Orange County Elections: former Ocoee Fire Chief Richard Firstner (827 votes, 44.37% of commissioner votes) and entrepreneur Marc A. Price (567 votes, 30.42%). The other two elections were for Ocoee mayor Oct. 27 — a vote to replace retiring Mayor S. Scott Vandergrift — and a run-off for that election Nov. 24. Ocoee officials have said Vandergrift could have prevented a costly special election — let alone the ensuing run-off — if he had retired in mid-September instead of July 31. Ocoee Charter rules state a special election must occur only if the elected official is outside six months before the election date for his position. But Price blames Total Brick Pavers CEO Ronney Oliveira for the Nov. 24 and proposed April 12 run-offs, based on finishing last in the Oct. 27 mayoral election (226 votes, 9.12%) and the March 15 District 3 commissioner election (470 votes, 21.62%) but with enough votes to force run-offs. Thus, to avoid a third election costing Ocoee taxpayers thousands of dollars, Price sent a letter March 17 to City Clerk Beth Eikenberry, announcing withdrawal from the District 3 commissioner election. “As a result of a third candidate who decided to yet again run for local office, our city and its residents (would) be faced with the problematic — and wildly expen-

sive — task of holding a run-off election,” Price wrote. “Beginning today, I (would) be asked to begin a monthlong run-off campaign against the other viable candidate, Mr. Richard Firstner. This pointless exercise, a complete lesson in futility, (would) cost our city thousands and thousands of dollars — yet again. It is something no person living here wants or needs or should have to pay for.” Price highlighted fiscal responsibility and unique attributes missing from the Ocoee City Commission without him. “I will make the honorable and self-sacrificing decision to step aside,” he said. “As a prudent entrepreneur and conscientious individual, I know this is the right and moral thing to do.” In a message to supporters, Firstner said he was ready get to work. Oliveira, an assistant pastor at Fountain of Life Church, said he respects Price’s decision but doesn’t consider the cost of a runoff to be an unnecessary expense. “I don’t think it’s a waste of money if he should decide to run because of $8,000, because the policies of the city allow that,” he said. “Something that people need to know is if they don’t like the kind of government they have in the city, they’ve got to get involved and change the policy.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

Orlando Health, district unveil $100M plan CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The cancer center will double Orlando Health’s ability to treat West Orange patients close to home.

The district will fund $75 million of the $100 million plan. “We are honored to contribute to and be part of this project,” said Tim Keating, district board chairman. “The board considers this effort an investment in the healthy future of our community, which supports the district’s mission to enhance health and wellness in West Orange County.” Ohe said he is particularly excited to bring expanded cancercare services to West Orange. “At the (current UF Health Cancer Center — Orlando Health facility), we reached our fiveyear projection volumes by year two,” he said. “It is particularly important for cancer patients to be closer to treatment. It can lead to a better outcome. It’s such a stressful time for patients and

their families. Patients (undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments) can have nausea, which makes car rides difficult.” Dr. Mark Roh, president of the UF center, agreed. “Evidence proves that patients suffering from cancer have better results when they are treated closer to home,” he said. “Each year, more than 1,200 residents living near Health Central are diagnosed with cancer. … This new facility is greatly needed.” The third project, the nursing facility, will include 60 beds for rehabilitation and another 40 for an Alzheimer’s unit. It will be located on the southeast corner of the Health Central campus and front Old Winter Garden Road. “One in three people over the age of 85 has Alzheimer’s,” said

Lori Jowett, administrator of Health Central Park, the hospital’s existing skilled-nursing facility. “The new facility will provide national resources for compassionate Alzheimer’s care and family support in an attractive and secure setting.” Construction on the Horizon West hospital will begin this fall, and officials hope it is complete by the end of 2017. Construction on the Ocoee facilities should begin later this year and be complete by 2018. The construction will generate more than 500 jobs, and once fully operational, the three facilities will create more than 200 permanent health care jobs in West Orange.

“It is particularly important for cancer patients to be closer to treatment. It can lead to a better outcome. It’s such a stressful time for patients and their families.”

facility will be situated off Porter Road on 80 acres just north of Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge and south of Hamlin Town Center. The district purchased the first 40 acres in 2000 and the second 40 about five years later in anticipation of the need for more health care in West Orange. The new hospital will include a freestanding emergency department, outpatient diagnostics and laboratory services, offices for primary-care physicians and specialists, and a human performance and wellness center. “This facility will combine high-tech with high-touch to provide patients with the most advanced medical care available,” said Greg Ohe, outgoing president of Health Central Hospital and new senior vice president of ambulatory for Orlando Health. “Through telemedicine technology, Horizon West residents will have access to additional pediatric and adult specialists who may be located on any of our other campuses.” The other two projects include a 30,000-square-foot comprehensive cancer center and a 100bed skilled-nursing facility — both of which will be located on the Health Central campus. “Now is the time for us to bring three projects of this magnitude,” said Tracy Swanson, executive director for the district. “We hope to have everything operational in three to five years.”

Following a review of all Letters of Intent, selected candidates will be invited to submit a full proposal. Candidates invited to submit a full proposal will be notified on or before May 1, 2016. Awards can range from $10,000 to $300,000. www.HealthAllianceOnline.org for more information.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

WHAT IS OPERATION SHOEBOX? Operation Shoebox provides hands-on support for troops deployed overseas and returning home. It was founded in 2003 by Mary Harper, a military mom in Central Florida who had five children and two sons-inlaw deployed around the world. When she learned that troops didn’t receive many care packages or mail, Harper started an informal care package project out of her living room. Her homegrown project quickly grew into a nonprofit organization. Harper continues her mission at the Operation Shoebox headquarters in Florida, where the organization ships between 800 and 1,000 care packages a week.

WINTER GARDEN Julie Hager’s car was loaded with boxes — shoeboxes and items to be put in shoeboxes — after donations came pouring in during Tildenville Elementary School’s collection drive for the Operation Shoebox program. This is the school’s first year participating. Donations will be accepted throughout the year and can be placed in the collection box in the front office. “This project was a huge success, and we look forward to

supporting this organization throughout the year,” Hager, the reading coach and coordinator of the school’s shoebox program, said. Students in prekindergarten through fifth grade (all 33 classes) participated, taking in personal care items such as toothbrushes, shampoo and soap; snacks and gum; pens, writing paper and envelopes; and other goodies to be packaged and sent oversees to troops. Hager delivered a carload of donations to the Operation Shoebox warehouse in Belleview, and

she and her family were given a tour of the facility and an opportunity to pack a bag to be shipped overseas. She said she and her daughter plan to return during spring break to take more donations and to volunteer. “There are quite a few staff and students that have a connection to someone in the Armed Forces on a personal level,” Tildenville Principal Agathe Alvarez said. “We felt that this would be a project that hits home for everyone and we could really help make a difference and support our troops. We are so thankful for all that our military does to keep us safe.”

Operation Shoebox sends care packages 50 weeks a year, and it takes two to four weeks for them to arrive. Even if you can’t make a monetary donation or purchase items for the boxes, you can still get involved. Each box contains a hand-written thankyou note, and those are always needed. Children also can color pictures to be included. All donations can be sent or dropped off at Operation Shoebox, 8360 E. Highway 25, Belleview, FL 34420. You can also adopt a troop and send care packages and letters directly to an individual. For information, go to operationshoebox.com/how-youcan-help/adopt-atroop/.

ALLISON DION RAVE. Had a medical issue with family member. Went to Florida Hospital Winter Garden. I have never been into an emergency room where they looked at you, smiled and wanted to help. After getting back in ER, which (took) two minutes, (I) met the most awesome staff. All their nurses were kind compassionate and knowledgeable. Had three RNs, one ARNP and two doctors. Knowing it was going to be a long night they took me to their nutrition room where there was a great amount of fresh foods. Thanks to Florida Hospital for making Winter Garden another one of your facilities’ home.

A wild boar, weighing almost 300 pounds, was shot and killed near Highway 50 and Dillard Street by Thurman Wofford, owner of West Orange Fence. The Winter Garden Laundromat and The Winter Garden Times are getting national attention. A feature story on the antique washing machines displayed at the laundromat that ran in the Times is now running in The Automatic Laundry and Dry Cleaning Digest with a mailing list of thousands.

Vice President Spiro Agnew spent two days at the Bay Hill Country Club relaxing and playing golf with Arnold Palmer.

Four WOHS DECA students, all employees of Publix — Johnny Dyal, Joe Papale, Candy Griffin and Joe Dinkel — toured the Publix Warehouse in Lakeland with their advisor, Richard Gaston. FROM THE ARCHIVES Winter Garden’s old utility plant, seen here during its demolition, began supplying electricity and water to the town in 1913. In 1929, Florida

Power bought the municipal utilities system, the plant was demolished and a fire station was built on the site nine years later. That station, constructed

with WPA funds under Mayor George Walker, now houses the Winter Garden Art Association at 127 S. Boyd St.

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, which seeks to preserve our heritage and architecture while creating new cultural experiences, is celebrating its third decade with the debut of its new History Research and Education Center.

Hoyle Pounds, founder and owner of Pounds Motor Company for more than 65 years ago, died following a recent stroke. He was a pioneer in the tractor business, first hitting on the idea of rubber tires, and was given a patent in 1953. Although it might sound extreme, many people are actually hoping for a hurricane this

year. The reason is simple — our lakes are drying up before our eyes. The lakes are a visible reminder of our need for rain.

George Bailey, of The West Orange Times, and Dale DeWitt, of DeWitt Excavating Inc., received the Golden Eagle Award at the Central Florida

Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s annual fundraising event. Eight-year-old Jenna Cross raised $720 in two days for the American Cancer Society by placing plastic flamingos in the 60 yards in her neighborhood. Winter Garden native Nolan Fontana played for the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies in 2015, one step from making the Houston Astros. After participating in the Astros’ big-league spring training, Fontana is optimistic this could be the year he is called up.

T

his could be a big year for Nolan Fontana. A year after his West Orange High teammate Mason Williams became the first Warrior to play in the MLB with a June 12, 2015, debut for the New York Yankees, Fontana is hoping to become the second. Fontana has worked his way through the minor-league organization of the Houston Astros, who optioned him on March 20 to the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies after he had played with the big-league club through most of Spring Training. Fontana, a 2009 West Orange graduate from Winter Garden, had an acclaimed varsity career,

including moments such as hitting a walk-off homer to give the Warriors a district title, and he helped USA Baseball win the 2007 World Youth Championship in Venezuela. In 200 games for the Florida Gators, he earned numerous conference and national awards, including becoming the first Gator shortstop named to the SEC All-Defensive Team thrice. The Gators won the 2011 SEC Tournament and finished second in the College World Series. Most recently, Fontana helped the Fresno Grizzlies win the 2015 Triple-A National Championship. Yeah, I mean anytime you have a little more experience, it’ll feel a little more comforting, a little easier, getting more accustomed to it. What memories in your journey through the minors have stood out to you? The most recent one for me would have to be last year. We won Triple-A — the national championship. Alli Sartini The West Orange JV softball team had no trouble winning the championship game of the St. Cloud Junior Varsity Tournament March 12, defeating the host team 9-0. Helping to lead the way was freshman Alli Sartini, who had a game-high five RBIs for the Warriors (17-1). On the season, the first-year Warrior is hitting .545 with 19 runs scored and 17 RBIs.

How big of a deal was it for the team to win the JV tournament at St. Cloud? It’s a big deal to us, because for the past two years, we’ve won it, and we really wanted to come out and show what we have this year. We’re a team full of freshmen and a couple sophomores, so it was a big deal for us. How are you enjoying your first year in the program at West Orange? It’s been amazing, honestly. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, and they’ve really taught me a lot. As a middle-schooler, were you excited to know that you would be joining a program with so much tradition?

THE BASICS POSITION: Outfield HEIGHT: 5-foot-3 HITS/THROWS: Right/ Right HOMETOWN: Orlando YEAR: Freshman

Definitely. I was nervous coming in. I would come to watch people I knew on the team. … I can’t wait to be a part of our varsity team eventually — they’re so respected. What do you like to do in your down time, away from the softball field? I hang out with my family a lot, and I’m really involved in school — clubs and everything. I got involved in “12th Man” (West Orange’s student spirit club). … I was in National Junior Honor Society last year. What’s been your favorite freshman memory so far? That would have to be the Dr. Phillips football game — I definitely will remember that. What are you thinking you’d like to do for a career one day? I want to be in the medical field, probably an anesthesiologist. I really like science. Do you have a least favorite chore you have to do around the house? That’s easy: loading the dishwasher. The worst part is putting the dishes away, definitely. Who is your favorite Disney character? My favorite Disney character is the Little Mermaid, because I’ve always wanted to be a mermaid. When I was little I would always watch that movie, and I just loved it.

In his first season coaching Foundation Academy’s girls varsity team, De’jon Everson saw his girls win a district championship and make a playoff appearance.

Foundation Academy taps new boys hoops coach After coaching the Lions girls team to a district championship, De’jon Everson now will lead the boys team and will help direct all of Foundation’s basketball programs. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR WINTER GARDEN It was

a little more than three-and-one-half years ago when De’jon Everson came to the campus of Foundation Academy to work for the school maintenance staff. Since then, Everson has lent a hand wherever he could. The former college basketball player helped coach the boys varsity program, the boys junior varsity and middle-school programs, the boys and girls track and cross-country programs, and this past winter, he was the head coach for the girls varsity basketball program. The enthusiasm and passion he brought to all of those previous roles was rewarded recently when he was named the head coach of the boys varsity basketball program after former coach Al Peterson left the program two weeks ago. “It was always one of my dreams to get a head-coaching job,” Everson said. “I’m just happy with the situation.”

Everson’s new role will include overseeing all of the school’s basketball programs, including the girls team he just coached to a district championship and playoff appearance. Replacing him in the role as girls’ head coach is Everson’s cousin, Tyree Crutchfield, who was an assistant for the team this past season. Although this will be Everson’s first go-round as a varsity head coach in boys basketball, he comes in with plenty of familiarity with the Lions’ players, many of whom he coached at the middle school or junior varsity levels. Everson, who has coached travel basketball for the Florida Tar Heels, said he also learned from the program’s outgoing coach. “(Peterson) taught me a lot about pre-game preparation,” Everson said. Originally from Georgia, Everson played basketball collegiately, first at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College before finishing his career at Trevecca

Nazarene University in Nashville. After he concluded his playing career at TNU, he served for two seasons as a graduate assistant, getting the ball rolling on his coaching career. Now, with just one senior leaving the program because of graduation, Everson is optimistic about what his Lions can accomplish going forward. “Give me six or seven guys that will run through the wall for me, and I’m going to be successful,” Everson said. son. The group that was with me made it that much better. We were all pretty close in that clubhouse. With Mason Williams debuting last season, does that make it seem any realer to you that you’re one level from The Show? I don’t know if that changes my perspective on it. You just kind of take care of yourself each and every day and know what you need to do to continue success. It’s really one day at a time — I don’t look too much ahead, anything beyond that. Some have praised your batting eye to the point they‘ve compared you to Kevin Youkilis. Are plate discipline and plate vision aspects of your game in which you’ve always taken pride? Oh, absolutely. It’s something since growing up that I worked on. It’s always a work in progress, but it’s also something I take pride in. It’’s always been part of my game. How did you hone those? You can do it in the cage; you can do it on the field; and it’s mostly game situations. You just bear down and you focus. You got to do the same thing in BP as you do in the game. You don’t go outside of a certain zone. You know what zones you have in certain counts and what pitches you’re looking for in a certain area. You take that from the cages to the game. What’s the biggest facet you need to work on to get the call up this year? You just got to play well and help your team and focus on only helping your team each and every day, and that’ll hopefully benefit you as a player. That goes for everyone, not just me, but I would say all around, you got to be the top all around to make it there and stay there.

You have gone back to school to finish your degree in the offseason — could you tell us more about that? I went back, and I did one semester. I have one more semester left to finish my degree. So I’m not quite there yet, but a little closer. My major’s family, youth and community sciences. Several of the guys have done it previously. It’s something that intrigued me, something that had to do with nonprofit organizations, and I see myself being a part of down the road. Not sure exactly what I will choose, but definitely see me doing something along those lines and probably coaching after my career, but as I keep saying, one day at a time.

Did being Lew Burdette’s grandson play a role in your desire to play baseball growing up? Absolutely, 100%. I mean, I played all types of sports growing up, but baseball definitely, from early in my highschool career, I was pretty certain that’s what I wanted to do. My mom and dad, they raised me and they helped turn me into who I am today, as well as both my older brothers. I mean, there’s an endless list of those who inspire me, in terms of my relatives and things like that. Hard work runs in my bloodline, so I think I got that from my parents. Is there anything that still sticks out to you from playing at West Orange High? Oh, yeah. Baseball memorywise, it’d probably be the district championship that we won over at the tournament in East Ridge. That was probably the biggest memory I have from there, but all the relationships are great, and some of them are still pretty strong. Jesse Marlo’s there, and I’ve always had a pretty good relationship with him, and that’s continued to grow.

Orlando, Daytona Beach bid on FHSAA Football Finals

STEVEN RYZEWSKI SIDELINE SCENE

We don’t know the specific venue yet, but we do know that the high-school football state championships are coming back to Central Florida this fall — and that’s a win. According to reports, Orlando and Daytona Beach each bid before the March 11 deadline, which will take place on the first two weekends of December. Orlando bid to have the championships at the Citrus Bowl, where it has been in recent years, and Daytona Beach offered its Municipal Stadium — a venue that had hosted the event in the mid1990s. A decision on where the finals for 2016, 2017 and 2018 will be played is to be made on or before May 6. For starters, I’m just glad that — at the most — the highschool football state championships are within a one-andone-half-hour drive. Fingers crossed, I’ll be there on assignment in early December.

On Twitter, there has been some talk about which venue better suits the event. The debate seems to come down to this: The Citrus Bowl is the newer, better, more centrally located venue with the first class amenities, while Municipal Stadium could be the right way to go in terms of creating the best possible atmosphere for a state-title game. Regarding the Citrus Bowl, it is surely a thrill for high-school kids to say they are taking the field at a venue where major college bowl games and international soccer games have taken place. Since its renovation was completed — and renovation is another way of saying most of the stadium was rebuilt from scratch — the Citrus Bowl has drawn rave reviews, and Florida certainly could do a lot worse. The downside, though, is obvious: The Citrus Bowl seats about 60,000 spectators, and a well-attended state title game isn’t going to draw close to half of that. Only in rare cases — with a local program involved — has a game held at the Citrus Bowl topped 10,000 in paid attendance. The optics on television aren’t great with lots of empty seats, and it’s not much better in person. The games still can be exciting, obviously, and a raucous fan base can make the atmosphere enjoyable, but they’re almost working against the large venue.

Now, I have not been to Municipal Stadium, where Bethune-Cookman University plays its home games, so I do not know about traffic or other issues with the venue. Here’s what I do know: It seats about 10,000 with the ability to add temporary seating for special occasions. The argument for a smaller venue is simple — atmosphere. Where 7,000 fans could seem like a disappointing turnout in the Citrus Bowl, that same crowd would nearly fill the facility in Daytona Beach. The idea is that the atmosphere at a packed, smaller venue would more closely mirror what we all think of when we think of highschool football under the lights on a Friday night. Which, of course, is not to say that some players, coaches and fans don’t prefer the added treat of playing in a venue such as the Citrus Bowl. Residents of West and Southwest Orange County also can’t complain about a state-title game being played at a driving distance no longer than our daily commute. I’m an atmosphere guy. That’s why I’d rather see a baseball game at Wrigley Field in Chicago than a football game in a glitzy NFL stadium such as “Jerry’s World” (AT&T Stadium) in Arlington, Texas. So, although I’m not flat-out advocating for Municipal Stadium, it certainly is intriguing. Either way, this reporter isn’t complaining.

Warriors put competition on notice Ahead of a rivalry game against Olympia High School, the West Orange High boys volleyball team looks vastly improved from a season ago. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR WINTER GARDEN The West Orange

boys volleyball team is off to a roaring start this spring and won four games in a row entering spring break. The Warriors (7-3) most recently swept Spruce Creek March 17 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20) behind Rafael Valles’ 18 assists, seven digs and six kills. That victory followed a win a

day earlier against Wekiva, 3-0, and earlier wins over defending state champion Bishop Moore March 10, 3-2, and Ocoee March 8, 3-0. For a team that finished just over .500 in 2015 at 14-10, this year’s edition of the Warriors has benefited greatly from its players embracing the club circuit. “Our guys did get better (from last season),” head coach Ross Usie said. “Most of them played club (in the offseason), so having them just experiencing that and playing volleyball year-round now is definitely helping their game. They like working hard.” Among those Warriors playing at a heightened level is Matthew Anetrella — against the Hornets, Anetrella registered 18 kills, 15 digs and four aces. Usie said the junior outside hitter also injects a loose, lively atmosphere into a team that already has a strong camaraderie. “(Anetrella is) kind of a class clown, but when it comes to game time, he is pretty consistent,” Usie said. “He’s just kind of fun to watch.” Although West Orange has had some consistency issues this spring, playing a role in its three losses, Usie believes his group — which has a strong sophomore class — can compete with anyone when it is firing on all cylinders. In the coming weeks, the Warriors will get a chance to test that theory. West Orange hosts

rival Olympia (9-1) at 7:30 p.m. March 29 in its first game following the break. Two nights later, the Warriors will travel to take on Lake Brantley (5-2). West Orange is 3-1 so far in District 4, and both matches that week are district games, meaning they are

extra important to the Warriors’ chances of making the District 4 Tournament, which will begin April 27 at Dr. Phillips. Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.
