2015 SUMMER FUN GUIDE
West Orange Trail offers endless fun
Although the trail is best known for cycling, plenty of other activities are also available.
T
he heat and humidity can be overbearing in the afternoon during the summer, but West Orange still offers nice temperatures to hit the West Orange Trail for a morning run or bicycle ride, with tree canopies along the way to keep users cooler even in the late afternoon. But the West Orange Trail, stretching more than 20 miles, is not so limited in the number of activities allowed on it. The trail is also open to rollerskaters, inline skaters, skateboarders, fishing, pet walkers and even horseback riders, with a parallel 10-mile, five-foot-wide equestrian path that extends north and south of Clarcona Horseman’s Park. With more than 55,000 people who make use of the trail each month between Killarney Station and Welch Road in Apopka, there are also several stops along the way that provide an even broader array of activities. To start at Mile 0, Killarney Station at the western end of the trail has everything a trail user should need before starting a journey: parking, restrooms, a water fountain, a concession stand, a shelter and West Orange Trail Bikes and Blades, which offers not only new bicycles and inline skates for users of all sizes but also team-building events and guided bicycle tours, including a historical Winter Garden Tour in partnership with the Winter Garden Historical Museum. For those who seek a much longer adventure, Killarney Station also connects to the South Lake Trail, which extends the whole way to the southwestern tip of Lake Minneola in Clermont at the western edge of Orange County. But Killarney Station can be a destination, too, with a picnic area
and a playground. A bike rack allows cyclists to secure their bikes while enjoying the myriad amenities at this station. Around Mile 1 is the restored railroad bridge, an interesting feature that spans Florida’s Turnpike, leading into Oakland and right up to the Oakland Nature Preserve, where curious observers of flora and fauna can receive information on wildlife near Lake Apopka and venture right to the lake via Machete Trail. Birders could make particular use of this area, too. The Oakland Outpost at Mile 2 near Oakland Town Hall or the Tildenville Outpost just past Mile 3 can provide a break, with not just water and benches but a butterfly garden and a historic railroad exhibit at the latter. Riding east leads to downtown Winter Garden, with eateries and entertainment options such as the interactive fountain and splashpad to cool off, just before reaching the Winter Garden Station at Mile 5. Winter Garden Wheel Works reopened this station for service Jan. 20, with free quick adjustments for cyclists, a beverage machine and nutritional snacks for those who want something quick. The station also offers all of the amenities of Killarney Station, including a playground. A left turn past the Winter Garden Branch Library takes the trail north to Covington Park, where it turns east again and the equestrian trail starts. At Mile 7, it hits Chapin Station, the official trail offices offering most amenities from the other two stations, tennis and basketball courts and a rental pavilion. A northern turn along West Crown Point Road leads trail-goers through a tree canopy and into Ocoee, where
The Winter Garden Wheel Works staff at Winter Garden Station is just one group of friendly faces along the West Orange Trail. an off-trail left turn north on OcoeeApopka Road leads to South Binion Road in just more than two miles. Turning onto South Binion Road in Apopka connects to the Lake Apopka Loop Trail at Magnolia Park. The West Orange Trail continues east into Ocoee, winding around Forest Lake Golf Club and West Orange Memorial Gardens to continue along Clarcona-Ocoee Road. Passing a series of lakes leads to a north turn around Mile 14 at the Apopka-Vineland Outpost off North Apopka-Vineland Road. This outpost has a picnic area, water, parking, a playground and equestrian facilities, just before a shoot west leads to the same amenities and restrooms at Clarcona Horseman’s Park near Mile 15.
Following the trail north into Apopka leads up a bridge over West Orange Blossom Trail, through Apopka’s streets, past its city hall and commercial area to Apopka City Park and Doctors Park. The trail winds to Mile 19, where Apopka Station holds a beverage machine, a playground, a picnic area, restrooms, parking, water and air. The trail continues north past a wooden bridge and more restaurants until ending at Mile 22 at East Welch Road. For more information on all of the excitement awaiting users of the West Orange Trail, contact Orange County Parks and Recreation at (407) 8366200 or parks@ocfl.net. — Zak Kerr

2015 SUMMER FUN GUIDE
Water safety takes center stage in summer Local municipalities offer swim lessons at competitive rates with goal of keeping West Orange children safe. On any given day, about 10 people die by drowning. In 2009, of children ages 1 through 4 who died from an unintentional injury, more than 30% died from drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here in Central Florida, where beautiful lakes are plentiful and many homes have pools, the reality of these numbers is even more impactful. Fortunately, parents can choose to be proactive about water safety by getting their children involved in swim lessons as early as possible. “It’s important to get them started early,” said Jay Conn, recreation director for the city of Winter Garden. There are myriad options for swim lessons, including services offered by West Orange municipalities. Ocoee and Winter Garden both have swim lessons that officials say are comparable to others offered around the area but designed to meet the financial needs of residents. Ocoee’s group lessons start
at $52.50 for residents for eight group lessons, and Winter Garden’s services start at $32 for residents for four group sessions and $64 for eight. “What really sets ours apart is that our price is much cheaper than most places,” Dan Abdo, recreation supervisor for the city of Ocoee, said. Both programs certify their trainers through the American Red Cross and tout their instructors as knowledgeable — and personable. “Some of what might set us apart is really our instructors,” Conn said. “We have some great staff, and we stress to all our new instructors how important it is to relate to the kids. We have great reviews and evaluations from parents.” The American Red Cross program is also popular for the progressions it offers as children both get older and more proficient in the water as well as the ability it offers for instructors to customize a lesson to a particular child. — Steven Ryzewski

Orange County has its share of parks, many of them in West Orange County. There are plenty in Winter Garden, Oakland, Ocoee and Windermere, too. — Amy Quesinberry Rhode
