Statistics shared on a popular social-media platform about the number of car burglaries at the Windermere Post Office are simply not true, said Windermere Police Chief David Ogden. A victim of a recent attempted car burglary at the post office posted there were no video cameras at the post office and that a responding police officer said there had been at least 30 bur-

glaries in the lot. However, both claims are untrue and likely the result of misinformation or miscommunication, said Ogden, who is checking with the officer to see what statements were made to the resident, if any. “Vetting information is extremely important,” Ogden said. “When I put stuff out on my Facebook … I always take a little bit of time to vet the information SEE CRIME PAGE 4

MY VIEW

WINDERMERE: The town that built me There’s a reason why, when introducing myself to a complete stranger, I note that I am from Windermere and not Orlando — a city easily recognizable to anyone in the world and the obvious choice when engaged in conversation. The simple answer is it evokes a tremendous sense of pride every time I mention the oneand-a-half-square-mile town where I was raised; even if it means answering the inevitable follow-up question, “Well, where is that exactly?” And if you grew up in Windermere, or your children grew up here, the rest will sound familiar. When I made the drive into town last year to see my parents, my mind began to wander. With my two younger siblings away at college and the house next door now home to a family other than my childhood best friend’s, nostalgia began to creep in. Growing up, we felt like we owned an entire block of real estate, which played host to endless manhunt nights, backyard baseball (which we treated as warmups for the Little League games) and fishing off the boat ramp dock (watching Disney fireworks at the same time). Although I’ll never stop visiting, it’s no longer where, when I needed a break from the constant motion of college, I could escape to for days on end. It’ll always be home, and that

will never change. But visiting has become a weekend vacation that must be planned ahead of time, making this place feel like something else entirely. Living in a new city isn’t all bad. It brings new experiences and new people — the excitement of exiting childhood and entering adulthood. But it doesn’t bring you that Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast at Town Hall you waited all year for; or the New Year’s block party at the house on the corner that attracted your favorite group of neighbors — year in and year out. And there certainly isn’t anything close to the Reddi Market — which, for anyone old enough to remember, was the place to get your fix of candy, Slushies and cap guns after school. It may seem odd that a young professional in his early 20s already finds himself reminiscing of better days. But when you grow up on dirt roads, where you never have to wear shoes, and you never have to tell your parents where you are at all times (something we definitely took for granted), you realize it was pretty amazing. I’ve always known how fortunate I was to have experienced childhood in Florida’s hidden gem but never quite knew how to convey my appreciation. Until now. Thank you, Windermere.

ith more than 1,000 attendees and dozens of vendors serving up their fares each year, the West Orange Chamber of Commerce’s Best Fest is one of the area’s largest foodtasting expos. And this year, the annual event is celebrating a milestone of 15 years showcasing the food, beverages, businesses and more that are ingrained in the West Orange community. Also known as The Taste of West Orange, Best Fest is again being held at Starke Lake in Ocoee. Be sure to come hungry — more than 60 vendors will bring their favorite dishes and drinks to sample and share with guests.

“We’ve always built it as more of a fun, streetparty atmosphere, and we’ve tried to capitalize on it being on the lake.” — Carrie Wilson, director of events for the WOCC

“We’ve always built it as more of a fun, street-party atmosphere, and we’ve tried to capitalize on it being on the lake,” said Carrie Wilson, director of events for the WOCC. “It’s a beautiful setting and a lot of fun since it’s outside. This is the only one of its kind locally we can find that you pay one admission price at the door and that’s it.” The ticket price of $40 in advance or $50 at the door allows guests unlimited access to all vendors in attendance, and there are no extra costs for samplings once admitted. Another pinnacle of the event is the awards that guests get to decide on themselves. All attendees get to vote on their favorite vendors in five categories: best food, best beverage, best booth, best dessert and best healthy food, the last of which is a new category this year to tie in with the Healthy West Orange initiative. “We’re excited to see the different vendors come and exhibit there. It’s great to be back over in Ocoee and it’s always exciting to see what the vendors are bringing and serving,” Wilson said. “It’s pretty much a surprise when we walk in. We’re looking forward to what they’re bringing and showing the community and chamber members what they’re doing.”

Windermere eye doctor sentenced to 10 years David Ming Pon fraudulently collected more than $7 million from Medicare between 2006 and 2011. GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER

After being found guilty on 20 counts of Medicare fraud in September 2015, a Windermere ophthalmologist was sentenced to 10 years in prison by U.S. District

Judge Brian Davis March 14. The 59-year-old eye doctor, David Ming Pon, also was ordered to repay $7 million after deliberately misdiagnosing more than 500 of his patients to bill Medicare for unnecessary diagnostic tests and laser treatments.

Pon, who worked at the Advanced Retina Eye Institute in Leesburg and had a second office in Orlando, told his patients they had wet macular degeneration — a degenerative eye disease that causes blurred vision and can lead to blindness. When conducting the tests and treatments, Pon injected patients with dyes known to pose “potential serious health risks, includ-

ing cardiac arrest,” according to a press release from the Department of Justice. However, Pon — who faced a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each count totaling 200 years — would use the laser at a low-power setting that had no effect on the patients. and make sure it’s accurate and complete. … None of that information about having 30 car burglaries or that there are no video cameras is true.” According to WPD records, there were only five car burglaries in 2016 and two in 2017, including this latest attempt. He suspects the exaggerated statistic might have stemmed from the high number of car burglaries normally reported at The Grove shopping plaza across the street from the post office. “We border Orange County right there — the road is what divides us,” Ogden said. “So it’s possible we miscommunicated or she misunderstood. But I know there have been multiple car burglaries, especially next door to us by LA Fitness. … So from a safety perspective, you should be cautious if you’re parking at LA Fitness or one of those parking lots where they’ve been having some burglaries.” Although the post office does have cameras, Ogden said police have spoken repeatedly to the office about updating their cameras with ones of higher quality. Regardless, he added, Windermere PD frequently patrols the area around the post office, given the problem spots in the surrounding areas, particularly LA Fitness. “We don’t have jurisdiction there, but we patrol that corner quite a bit because of the post office,” Ogden said. “I know that we have a very low volume because … we just flat out have more presence. So that’s why we keep a close eye out on the post office because we know that all the other areas there enhance the possibility of burglaries in that area.” To reduce the risk of becoming a car burglary victim, Ogden advised being wary of parked cars with the engine still running and to avoid leaving valuable items, bags or purses in plain sight inside a locked car. Last year, the department received nearly $20,000 from the 5K, which was used to help update various areas in the city’s parks. “It’s how we keep up capital improvements in the parks,” said Steele. This year, the funds raised from the run will be used at the Windermere Recreation Center to install volleyball courts and a dock for swimming and fishing. “I look forward to having a good turnout,” Mayor Gary Bruhn said about the upcoming race. “It puts money right back into our accounts to continue expansion and improvements to our parks.” Nearly 1,000 people are expected to participate in this year’s run. “I think it’s one of the greatest 5Ks in all of Central Florida,” said Bruhn, who has participated in the run before. “You have such beautiful views as you’re running.” In addition to the 5K, this year’s

run also will include a 10K. Both the 5K and 10K courses meander along unpaved, sandy roads through oak trees along the lakefront, but the 10K course has an added segment along Lake Butler Boulevard. The Run Among the Lakes had once included a 10K several years ago, but there wasn’t enough interest to continue running it, Bruhn said. Recently, citizens have voiced their support of including a 10K, so it was added to this year’s run. “We have the interest, so I think it will be very successful,” Bruhn said. Every year, the run also features art by a local artist, and this year’s featured artist is Kim Minichiello, who is known for her plein air paintings in watercolor. Her featured art, called “Historic Windermere School House,” will be displayed on posters and this year’s commemorative T-shirts. The 10K race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, April 1, and the 5K begins at 7:45 a.m. Registration costs $35 until Friday, March 31, and $40 on race day. One dog makes all the difference Carol and Craig Kirkland got involved in pet therapy at Nemours because of their silken windhound Ti’ Amo.

The Kirklands’ journey into pet therapy started in 2009 with Ti’ Amo. And although it’s been a year since his sudden death, he left behind a legacy that lives on through Craig and Carol Kirkland. The idea of pet therapy was sparked when the couple brought Ti’ Amo, a silken windhound, to a children’s soccer game. “The children ran over to the dogs and made a big fuss about them,” Carol said. “Ti’ Amo just stood there and let them love on him. I said to Craig that (because) Ti’ Amo loves kids so much, maybe he should be a therapy dog.” After doing some research, Carol reached out to Nemours Children’s Hospital, although back then it was just a clinic in downtown Orlando. She was told that if Ti’ Amo went through a pet-therapy training program, the facility would consider allowing him to visit the patients at the clinic. Once trained, Ti’ Amo charmed both the staff and the children at Nemours. “It’s such a welcome distraction for everyone,” said Jill Mondry, director of volunteer services at Nemours. “We’ve seen patients in pain and not smiling or talking or

SOUTHWEST ORANGE

happy. They just forget about the pain, forget they’re in a hospital. (Therapy dogs) truly make a difference.” For Carol and Ti’ Amo, it was all about the smiles. “You do visits and make people happy,” Carol said. “It’s a wonderful program. It’s a happy time for the kids and the families.” As Carol became more involved with the hospital’s pet therapy, she was thoroughly impressed with the culture she experienced at Nemours. “All of the team members that I met — they are the real deal,” Carol said. “They really love the children there.” The hospital currently has about 30 pet-therapy teams that visit the patients on a regular basis. “It’s one of the most popular programs that we do,” Mondry said. “It puts everybody in a good mood, and the dogs show such unconditional love.” Ti’ Amo was a fixture of the program, becoming a loved doggy celebrity by the staff and patients. Then last year, the unthinkable happened. It was Easter morning, and Ti’ Amo wouldn’t wake up. There had been no symptoms he was sick. A specialist told the couple that Ti’ Amo probably died of an aneurysm. The Kirklands were devastated.

Ti’ Amo, right, had a love for children that inspired Craig and Carol Kirkland to train him as a pet therapy dog.

“You do visits and make people happy. It’s a wonderful program. It’s a happy time for the kids and the families.” — CAROL KIRKLAND

To keep his memory alive, they turned to Nemours — the place where Ti’ Amo had become known so well. “He had such a history with Nenours, so we wanted to make his legacy something that will be remembered,” Carol said. The couple helped create a pettherapy wall in the hospital, a coloring book of all the therapy pets who visit the hospital and therapy-pet trading cards. Ti’ Amo is featured in all three. “The kids love seeing all the doggy pictures in one location, and they love collecting the trading cards,” Mondry said. In recognition of what the Kirklands have given to Nemours, the hospital recently honored them with its Inspiration Award, which is given to donors whose generosi-

ty reflects the founder of Nemours. “It was a true honor,” Carol said. But the Kirklands’ involvement at Nemours is far from over. After Ti’ Amo died, Carol had her other silken windhound, Lilli, certified as a therapy dog. But Lilli didn’t seem to enjoy the hospital visits as much as Ti’ Amo. So Carol began searching for another silken windhound that could step into Ti’ Amo’s shoes. That’s how she met Sundance. “By the end of the first day, we knew he was the right dog,” Carol said. “Now he’s going to be my working partner.” Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

OOKY “The Addams Family” opens this weekend at Olympia High School.

MEET THE CAST OF THE ADDAMS FAMILY ON PAGE 8

BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER

T

hings are taking a quirky turn at Olympia High School as the theater department stages “The Addams Family” at 7 p.m. March 30 through April 1, and at 1 p.m. April 1, at the school, 4301 S. Apopka-Vineland Road. What makes this show unique is the partnership between the school’s theater director, Ed Budd, and the school’s Latin teacher Alan Pagan-Pearl. Although Pagan-Pearl has spent many years lending a helping hand for Budd’s productions, this is the first show he has directed for the school. “I’ve always been an actor and have never thought of directing, but I’ve really enjoyed this process,” Pagan-Pearl said. “It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for me. Theater has made me everything I am, so it’s very powerful for me to get this opportunity. Of course, under any director is a cast of actors. And in the case of “The Addams Family,” these actors will be re-creating characters from a show that pre-dates them by 50 years.

Addams Family ZACK PRINGLE, SENIOR CHARACTER: GOMEZ

For which role did you audition? Gomez. I played Gomez once before in eighth grade. I was drawn to it and wanted to go out (my senior year) with Gomez being my final character.

232532

What do you like about Gomez’s character? I like his comedic timing and his off-beat sense of humor. Have you ever seen “The Addams Family” before? I saw the ’90s movie as probably a 7-year-old, and I thought it was really funny. What is one of the craziest thing your character says in the show? Several times, he goes on big stories about his ancestors, and the punch line is always Jose Cuervo. It’s Captain General Redondo Ventana Laguna Don Jose Cuervo. KELSEY AARON, SENIOR CHARACTER: MORTICIA

For which role did you audition? Morticia. Originally I wanted to go for Wednesday, but I didn’t have the vocal range. So someone suggested that I try out for Morticia and I could sing her songs really well. What do you like about Morticia’s character? She’s very different from anything I’ve ever done. I’ve always admired her. She’s always been like a mom to me.

232332

Have you ever seen “The Addams Family” before? I watched the movie and TV show. I thought it was pretty funny and very different . What is one of the funniest things your character says in the show? My favorite line is when she says that her poems are about one thing that everyone wants but no one has — health care.

Relief is just a Pellet Away!

• Hot Flashes • Memory Fog • Frequent Urination • Headaches • Joint Pains

Your Body in Balance Shelley C. Glover, MD

AIDAN HUETE, SOPHOMORE CHARACTER: FESTER

For which role did you audition? Wednesday and Morticia, but mainly Wednesday, because I feel like a lot of teenage girls can relate to her.

For which role did you audition? Morticia. In the previous play I played a woman which I found to be the funnest thing.

What do you like about Wednesday’s character? I love her songs. They show her range and personality, and the tone of the songs shows how she is torn between the two sides (of her family and her boyfriend). Have you ever seen “The Addams Family” before? I used to watch the TV show. It’s a classic. It’s like a monster family, a quirky family. Then a few years ago, I realized there was a musical. What is your favorite line from the show? My favorite line is, “Pugsley can you just go away and die?” DANIEL KLINE, SENIOR CHARACTER: LUCAS BEINEKE

For which role did you audition? Lucas was my first choice. I saw “The Addams Family” musical a little over a year ago and wanted to play Lucas ever since. What do you like about Lucas’s character? He’s a normal person going in, but was brought into their quirkiness and weirdness. It’s a transition for him throughout the musical. Have you ever seen “The Addams Family” before? It was such a different show, such a funny show. Everything “Addams Family” has been super good. What is the craziest thing your character does in the show? He risks his life to prove his love to Wednesday, like when she shoots the apple off his head.

What do you like about Fester’s character? He’s crazy silly. And I’m able to channel my inner creep-job. Have you ever seen “The Addams Family” before? I started watching it when I got the role of Fester. I remember thinking how did this become a play? It’s so over-the-top. What is the craziest thing your character does in the show? I get a rocket pack at the end of the show and blast off to the moon. MADDIE MCMAHON, SOPHOMORE CHARACTER: PUGSLEY

For which role did you audition? I said anyone. I was surprised but very happy to be in a musical because I haven’t been in one before. What do you like about Pugsley’s character? I like playing up the troublesome brother, poking fun and annoying Wednesday. Have you ever seen “The Addams Family” before? I watched the cartoon over spring break. It was hilarious, and it brought out a lot of interesting characters who aren’t in the musical. What is the craziest thing that happens to your character in the show? I get pulled out on this torture device and say, “Wednesday and Lucas sitting in a tree. K-I-L-LI-N-G. First comes loves then comes …” then I scream because Wednesday turns the device on.

Driving cancer away Attendees will dust off their boots for an evening in the ‘Wild West’ to support the American Cancer Society. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER

Since the 1970s, American Cancer Society supporters nationwide have been putting a twist on the charitable gala: They’re breaking out the boots, cowboy hats and flannel shirts. At the annual Cattle Barons’ Ball, many guests eschew gowns and tuxedos for traditional Western wear. A charitable gala nonetheless, the ball was first launched in Texas in the 1970s to bring together donors for a fun, relaxing evening of raising funds to fight cancer. While the ball will be ongoing in various places around the country, hundreds of Central Florida

attendees will kick the dust up Saturday, April 1, at Rosen Shingle Creek. “It’s a different kind of gala, because people can come in blue jeans and boots if they want, or a fancy party dress,” said Therese Yanochik, the Central Florida Cattle Barons’ Ball event organizer. “It’s a very high-end event, and what’s unique about Orlando’s is that it’s a dine around. We have more than 30 restaurants in the area that come in and prepare the food. It’s neat that people can experience all these different restaurants in one place.” Whether attendees dress in blue jeans and boots or party dresses with a little bling, the focus of the night is on raising money for the American Cancer Society. They’ll get to try their luck at multiple chance drawings, such as the Wine Door and Stock Your Saloon. In the Wine Door drawing, attendees buy a key for $25 a piece and take a chance on winning 101 bottles of wine and Spiegleau stemware, valued at $2,000. Whoever gets the winning key that unlocks the door will win all of the wine and stemware. And taking a chance on “stocking your saloon” could pay off in the form of winning a complete bar collection of vodka, gin, rum, bourbon, scotch, whiskey and cordials, plus a full assortment of bar accessories. For $25 per chance, attendees are one lucky draw closer to a fully stocked bar. Guests also will have the opportunity to pan for real gems,

win a $5,000 pair of diamond earrings, play carnival games, listen to high-energy band Blue Stone Circle perform, take line-dancing lessons on the dance floor and socialize while enjoying local delicacies. Featured restaurants include Taverna Opa, Rosen Shingle Creek, 4Rivers Smokehouse, Tapa Toro, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Capa at Four Seasons Resort, Yak & Yeti, Vital Flair Catering, Crooked Can Brewery, Starbucks, and ABC Fine Wine and Spirits. Last year’s ball raised more than $400,000 for cancer research. This year, Yanochik has set the bar even higher, with hopes of

raising $500,000. “It’s rewarding just seeing how the Central Florida community has really come together for this event with the dine around and beverage companies, our wonderful volunteers, our committee, the Earls (honorary chairs Tricia and Robert) and Lynette Tipton Steed (event chair) coming together to put this event on,” Yanochik said. “I’m just excited to have everyone come together to raise money for cancer research and patient services.” Contact Danielle Hendrix at dhendrix@orangeobserver.com.

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017

A beautiful gracious woman died this week. Gloria Ann (Johnson) Harris passed peacefully without pain on Saturday, March 25, 2017, knowing abundant love from family, friends and her Heavenly Father. Ann was born in Atlanta, daughter of many generations of Southern ladies and Steel Magnolias. She moved to Orlando in her teens, attended OHS with her older sister, Jane Johnson (Steele), and was tickled to say they were both “Dixie Debs.” After high school, she briefly attended modeling school in New York until it became apparent she was too short to walk the runway. She returned to Florida, worked at LaPierre Pontiac and met the man of her dreams, Phil Harris, at a USO dance. Phil’s military career swept them across the country to a succession of Air Force bases, where Ann set up new homes for her growing family of three daughters. She lived in many

places, but Florida was always “home.” After Phil’s retirement, new adventures began in Orlando: a great job at the USDA, Evans basketball games, West Orange Country Club, friends, mountain vacations and golf — lots of golf. Throughout the chapters of her life, Ann remained true to her Georgia Peach heritage. Although she thought of herself as a Floridian, she carried herself with feminine grace and style reminiscent of Melanie Wilkes, always well groomed and beautifully dressed; she was ladylike all the days of her life. Mama loved tiny babies, horses, crossword puzzles, precise grammar, hydrangeas, “O Holy Night,” Paul Newman, Arnold Palmer, the beach, lemon curd, chocolate milk-

shakes, dental floss, playing gin with the girls and pretty clothing that did not have to be dry cleaned. She was an avid Magic fan and watched every game on TV for 15 seasons. She was conscientious, careful and responsible in all things. Mama was loving, at times stern, gracious but direct, aloof and fragile as a flower petal. She was quietly spiritual and loyal to the highest order. Predeceased by her dearest friend and sister Jane, Ann leaves behind family and friends who cherished her: daughters, Marcia Harris, Nila Harris and Raenelle Bailey (Travis); grandchildren, Lorie Bonham, Jessica Bailey, Chris Justice and Daniel Hanna; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews who called her Sassue; caregivers, dogs; and above all else, her beloved husband of 63 years and the center of her universe, Phil Harris. In lieu of funeral services, her family will have a private remembrance gathering. All who wish to remember her are invited to follow her example of love, gentility and grace and to uplift her family with prayer.

‘Pilates on steroids’ Windermere resident Angela Lopez has brought the incredibly popular Lagree Fitness Training Method to West Orange County with the opening of Lagree Fit OC. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

WINTER GARDEN People like to call it “Pilates on steroids.” It’s the Lagree Fitness Training Method, pioneered by Sebastien Lagree, and it has arrived in West Orange County. A fitness system that has been embraced by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara and Ivanka Trump, Lagree Fit OC has come to the area with a location in Winter Garden in a shared space with Garage Mama Fitness and Trinity Sports Performance. In September, a location in Windermere will open in the Westside Shoppes development currently under construction along Country Road 535 near Lakeside Village. Windermere resident Angela

Lopez has been a certified Lagree trainer for several years in locations ranging from West Hollywood to Miami. Now, along with her husband and former Major League Baseball star Felipe Lopez, she is bringing the trendsetting methodology here. “(Windermere) is where my husband has lived for the past 15 years or so, and it’s also where we live now, so I’ve always wanted to open a Lagree Fitness studio close to home,” Lopez said. On a large scale, Sebastien Lagree’s program has become an exercise empire of sorts, with locations springing up across the country. The program utilizes the Megaformer, which Lagree invented, to give a more intense SEE EFFICIENCY PAGE 17

s time went on, the wear and tear of playing tennis regularly started to add up for Shirley Adams as she reached retirement. “That’s exactly why I stopped,” Adams said. “My knees started really bothering me.” The same went for Ginny Wolff, who recognized the situation may no longer be tenable after tearing a tendon in her foot. For these two Keene’s Pointe residents, it was time to re-evaluate how they keep active while staying social and feeding their appetite for competition. The game of golf fit nicely, and the Keene’s Pointe Ladies Golf Association has been a great facilitator. “Absolutely — and it’s fun,” Wolff said, asked whether golf though KPLGA has filled the void in her life that tennis once occupied. “Every week, you play with somebody different.” Launched in 2001 — not long after the Keene’s Pointe development just outside the town limits of Windermere was completed — the KPLGA has been facilitating residents and members at the Golden Bear Club keeping active, competitive and social. Although there is not an official age designation, the membership of more than 50 ladies does skew older as more women are able to play

What spurred your personal journey to fitness? About four years ago, I lost my dad, and I was going crazy. I knew I had so much energy inside and didn’t want to go out or be with other people. I just wanted to release the stress I had, so I joined a gym and started going every day. I had no idea what I was doing at first, and I never wanted someone in the gym to see me doing something wrong. So I started researching, reading everything possible. I taught myself, and it became my passion. How do you approach working with a new client? I test the client, and from there, I go to where their weak and strong muscles are and activity levels. I have a client (who is) 12 and a client (who is) 75, so it ranges, and not everyone’s on the same physical level.

hen Rebecca Young and her husband, Geoff, were scouting areas to live in Florida, West Orange was an easy sell. When the couple from Baltimore came down to visit downtown Winter Garden on a Saturday, the community — boasting fresh produce in January at the farmers market and dozens of people jogging and cycling up and down the West Orange Trail — sold itself. The Youngs followed through and moved to Summerport Village in August 2016. Then, the challenge morphed from the logistics of moving from a different state to beginning to integrate themselves into a new community. Fortunately, it didn’t take Rebecca long to find the Winter Garden Runners. Rebecca had been more of a gym rat when living up north — partly because of the

How do you manage to balance school and work? It’s very stressful, but the only thing I look at every five minutes is time. I’m always keeping track of my time. My day goes by half-hours — I’ll have 30 minutes to do this, 30 minutes to study, to cook or eat and stuff like that. What’s your typical workout routine? I go through splits — chest and arms, legs, shoulders and back. I work out muscle everyday and take a day off if I need it. I work out about six days a week and sometimes seven. If I’m tired I won’t work out, and if I’m not I’ll just go for it.

regularly once they retire. “I would say its (chief purpose is) really so that you play a round of golf together — but it’s also social,” Adams said. “There’s a camaraderie.” For someone such as Wolff, the organization’s president this season, that social element — and its ability to make a large development like Keene’s Pointe feel a little smaller and communal — is crucial. “That’s very important to me,” Wolff said. “(The KPLGA has) such a diverse group of people. Everybody comes from somewhere else, and there are different ages and people in different stages of their lives. It’s an interesting group of women.” For Adams, it can be the competitive element that is most valuable. Both women took up golf seriously later in life, but Adams takes regular lessons

If you had your favorite meal sitting in front of you, what would it be? Some steak, rice and broccoli. Where in the world would you most like to visit? I want to travel the world but especially to Greece. I like the history, and I want to go to relax and to get my mind off things.

weather in the winter — but she also had some experience with running groups. So, when she came across the Facebook page for the Winter Garden Runners, she sent the group a message asking about coming out and what kind of pace they tend to keep. The response was warm and welcoming: Come on out — we have people at all difference paces. After that first run on a Saturday morning last fall, Rebecca had planned to simply return home. “We finished and they said, ‘Aren’t you coming to coffee?’” Young recalled. “And I said, ‘Oh, I guess I am.’” Indeed, the Runners have provided the newcomer to West Orange County not only with a group of people to stay fit with and be accountable to on the trail but also with a new social network. The Youngs have attended a “Friendsgiving” celebration with friends from the Runners, as well as a Christmas party. After some runs, members converge on Axum Coffee — after others, it’s the Crooked Can Brewery at Plant Street Market. In addition to a network of friends, Young — who is a teacher for Orange County Public Schools — said the group dynamic has made her a better runner. Runners often

from a coach and recently started competing additionally in a regional ladies golf association. “I’m very serious about getting better at it,” Adams said. “Once I grab onto something, I can’t let it go until I improve.” The KPLGA keeps an active calendar full of fun events, including a club championship, match play, a President’s Cup, a “putt ‘n’ pour” and plenty of others. On Wednesday and Thursday this week, the ladies are participating in a “Member/Member” event, and the end of the 2016-2017 calendar is drawing near with the club championship in April. chat while on their runs, and Young’s desire to remain a part of the conversation forces her to keep a faster pace. “You get in conversation and you don’t want the conversation to die,” Young said. “I always say I have a little-sister mentality. I’m tagging along and don’t want to get left behind because we’re joking and laughing.” Not only has her pace improved, but also Young said the frequency with which she formally competes has, as well. The Runners often negotiate discounts for their members for 5Ks, half-marathons and marathons, and members are always encouraging others to come race with them. “I’ve done way more races than I ever used to do,” Young said. “I’ve done five half-marathons since moving here, and I’d only done four in my life prior to that.” It all has combined to fulfill the hopes Young said she felt when she first visited the area while still living in Baltimore. “We went over to brunch somewhere, and everyone is jogging and biking and families are out — I said, ‘This is where I want to live,’” Young said. “I was sold.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

— there is the added benefit of a new hobby they can share with their extended family. “It’s nice, because it is something people can play together regardless of their level,” Wolff said. And even though the ladies play the same course at The Golden Bear Club each week, one of the perks of golf is that no two rounds are ever the same. For Wolff, who has been a member since 2012, and Adams, who has been a member since 2005, each time they set out on the links it is a new adventure. “There’s something about golf, for me, where even if you play the same course — you’re not in the same position,” Adams said. “It’s always a little different.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

Efficiency and exercise and challenging workout than regularly associated with Pilates. On the official Lagree Fitness website, the ideology is explained: “Put simply, Lagree Fitness is the only workout that effectively combines strength, endurance, cardio, balance, core and flexibility training not only in one session but in each and every move.” In short, it’s an exercise in efficiency, something Lopez recalls from the first time she took a class at Lagree’s original gym in Los Angeles nearly a decade ago. “I liked that it targeted specific muscle groups and the toning,” Lopez said. “To me, it targeted (the muscle groups) so directly, and it felt like something achievable, even though it’s a challenging class.” Lopez said the affinity celebrities have for the program is telling of its efficiency. For anyone who might have a busy schedule, Lopez said they can come and get in a serious workout in 30 minutes. For the clients who have given it a shot so far, the results have come quickly. Michelle Damon, wife of former baseball star Johnny Damon, said she had tried Pilates before but didn’t like it. She found her first experience doing a Lagree Fit class with Lopez, though, to be quite different. “I like that, the very first time I did it, I was sore the next day,” Damon said. “I knew it definitely worked.” In addition to the results she says she has seen within the first month of taking the classes with Lopez, Damon also enjoys Lopez’s teaching style in the group setting.

“I like that she’s really positive,” Damon said. “There’s a lot of positive, motivational energy.” Because of the design of the Megaformer, Lopez likes to say, “You can’t escape the machine.” In addition to some celebrities in Los Angeles and Miami, she has trained six professional athletes, including her husband. “They can’t believe how hard it is,” Lopez said of the pro athletes. “They think it’s going to be easy, and then they’re sweating and screaming.” Felipe Lopez, who has also launched his own business in West Orange named Felipe Lopez Baseball, said the incorporation of the Lagree Fitness method into his overall training method was greatly beneficial to his baseball career. “This system is highly recommended for the longevity of your career,” Felipe Lopez said. “I’m trying to bring it into that baseball world, because it’s so beneficial for athletes.” So far, Lagree Fit OC has grown quickly and mostly by word of mouth and client referrals. Lopez is optimistic to grow the brand in an area such as West Orange and Windermere, where so many people put an emphasis on taking care of themselves. “I want people to walk in here every day and feel like this is the place they can rest, this is the place they heal, and this is the place where they strengthen themselves,” Lopez said. “When they leave, I want them to walk out feeling fresh and new and better than when they walked in.”
