When Prestun Seibel was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at age 3, doctors told his parents he wouldn’t make it to his fourth birthday. Fast-forward four years later, and Prestun is a 7-year-old kindergarten student at Independence Elementary. The Seibel family moved from Kansas to Horizon West six months ago to give Prestun a better chance at life — and to find better medical-care options. “He likes swimming, and the

place Saturday morning during the Bloom & Grow Garden Society’s 17th annual Spring Fever in the Garden. The Orlando resident and lifelong artist has participated in the Winter Garden contest every year but one. He is partial to birds and aquatic life. One year, he created a threedimensional piece with birds; he will do another 3-D piece this Saturday featuring a tri-colored heron standing in a pond surrounded by daffodils. “We’re considered a performance art,” Hawkins said of chalk artists. “People always see artwork, but they see the finished product and they don’t really see what goes into creating the artwork. I’ve had a three-day (chalk) project before, and I’ve had people come and watch every day.” He and an artist friend refer to it as zen art. “We start with a blank piece of concrete, we create a piece, and then nature takes it back to nothing,” he said. Hawkins has been participating in chalk art contests since 1995 and has won several awards. Cash prizes totaling $2,100 will be awarded to the best chalk artists in this popular sidewalk art contest. Artists of all ages are invited to create a nature-related image within a six- by six-foot square in front of City Hall. Judging takes place at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. A brick road constructed in 1915 is finally getting the historic recognition it deserves. Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey held a small ceremony recently to unveil the green permanent marker on the road that connects Plant Street to the east and Tildenville School Road to the west, a halfmile north of West Colonial Drive. Brick Road was the historic State Road 22 that traveled from Oakland through Winter Garden and Ocoee to Orlando.
Tildenville resident Glenda Loew has fought to get a permanent marker placed at the end of the .6-mile-long road. Dr. Adam Ware, of the Orange County Regional History Center, said stretches of brick road such as this are rare. “It’s so good to know we’ve preserved a piece of the past,” said Scott Boyd, former District 1 commissioner for Orange County, who was on hand for the marker dedication. The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation and the county’s Regional History Center worked together on the project.

future. The co-owners struggled to stay in business the past few months and finally closed the restaurant Friday, March 31. “It’s just a very emotional time right now,” said Black Market Ribs co-owner Courtney Connor. Co-owners Juan Rios and Connor spoke in subdued voices as they explained what they suspect might have led to the unforeseen downfall of their first business venture. “We put so much work into it,” said Rios, referring to the origins of their food business. “We put probably two years of research into this, you know, researching the industry, researching the farmers markets, researching food trucks and just getting my skill set to a level that was worthy of getting paid to make food for others. … So that’s when we went ahead and started going to farmers markets and got a great response from the customers.” The pair opened the eatery Sept. 24, 2016, after considering the idea of joining the food-truck movement. However, they ended up invest in a brick-and-mortar location, instead. “We actually had started building the concept for our own food truck, but then we thought this was a better idea, and we went ahead and pulled the money out of the food truck and put it in here,” Rios said. “It backfired.” Despite their promising start and success at farmers markets around Central Florida, their financial circumstances declined quickly. The two attributed the failure to a marketing decision — participating in Groupon deals. “Groupon killed us,” Connor
said. “It became a day-to-day struggle to where …. if nothing but Groupon customers showed up that day, then we had no money to buy food for the next day — let alone try to pay our bills.” The fate of their young restaurant was at the mercy of three potential investors who had expressed interest in helping the pair keep the business after hearing the news that Black Market Ribs would be closing. “We went through all the motions to save the business,” Rios said. “And then once we posted (on social media) that we were closing, people came out to say, ‘OK, we’re interested in helping you guys.’ So here I am renting a U-Haul truck to move to Georgia, and all of a sudden, these guys show up saying, ‘We want to invest in you guys.’” Keeping their business afloat was a challenge, Rios said, causing them significant financial stress and requiring the couple to work 16-hour days. But Rios and Connor ultimately decided to close after negotiations broke down with the potential investors — their last attempt to stay in business. The ideal situation for Rios and Connor, they said, would have been to have the investors help them renovate the restaurant by adding covered outside seating to the front of their establishment and three to four tables inside. They also were going to make it their goal to increase their marketing to generate enough customers to keep doing what they love. However, the pair now will focus on the pursuit of their original food truck dreams. Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

Just wanted to say thank you for the laugh — the April Fools’ Day article was a gem. My husband and I were duped for a solid 40 minutes (though perhaps I shouldn’t admit this). As we were discussing the article, and the enforceability of such an ordinance, we happened to drive through downtown. Just as I said, “Why are all of these people still on bikes,” it hit us, and we both had a really, really good laugh. I’m still chuckling about it. Thanks again! We’ll be on our toes next year.
Sounds like George Bailey! — WARD BRITT
If you don’t click onto any other part of the article you won’t find out that it’s an April Fools’ joke. It can cause problems because unfortunately, bikers are riding through the trail without regards for the rules at all right now and don’t stop when they are supposed to at stop signs on the trail. Cars can’t stop on a dime, you know.

f you follow us on social media (and if not, you should), it is likely you read our exclusive “breaking news” Saturday, April 1. The story, “Winter Garden bans bicyclists,” was part of Observer Media Group’s annual April Fools’ spoofs, and it certainly caused a bit of a dust-up online. The story claimed Winter Garden city officials had banned bicyclists from riding in downtown Winter Garden. Instead, they would have to take apart their bicycles (after first purchasing tool kits from either the Winter Garden Station or Tildenville Outpost). Once the bicycle was disassembled, they would then carry the pieces in cardboard boxes through downtown. We saw reactions of all kinds — ranging from incredulity and rage to complete joy and even disappointment that it wasn’t true. And yes, we even tricked a few readers. We’re sorry. … Kinda … We hope our 2017 spoof gave you a laugh — we believe now, perhaps more than ever, we all could use one. And if you haven’t seen the story, you still can read it at OrangeObserver.com. Here are some of our favorite responses to the story.
WHAT YOU SAID …

I heard that baseball, Italian eateries, outdoor malls, barbecue, farmers markets and craft-beer establishments are also banned. — KYLE EAZSOL
Too bad this was a joke. It’s a serious problem — maybe a life could have been saved. Not an April Fools’ joke. Just a stupid joke. (Whoever) came up with it is an idiot! — EVELYN RIVERA
I wish they would seriously ban them from the road or have patrols to pull them over and fine them for breaking the laws, but it appears getting them to comply and be good citizens is only a foolish idea.
Please tell me this is a crazy April Fools’ joke. I can’t imagine Winter Garden without the West Orange Trail. What I loved most when I lived in Winter Garden was being able to run from my door to the trail. — REBEKAH YATES

When the Seibels lived in Kansas, Florida was a frequent vacation destination for the family. After a vacation in 2012 when Prestun was 3, one of the couple’s daughters asked why Prestun was limping. They originally thought it was just because they’d been walking around the theme parks. But a few weeks later, teachers at his daycare called Tiffany and said he was screaming that his left leg hurt. She started watching him closely after that, knowing something wasn’t right. “We knew when we went there (to the hospital) to figure out what was wrong with him, they’d just say it was growing pains or something,” she said. “They couldn’t figure it out there and began dismissing it basically, and then we took him to a kids’ hospital threeand-a-half hours away. It took me all the way to September to go through the doctors. They did X-rays, labs and then a bone biopsy. The initial thought before the biopsy was that there was a fracture, and then they saw the tumor on top of the bone.” The diagnosis of Stage 4 neuroblastoma — an incurable form of childhood cancer — came in late September 2012, and Prestun underwent six cycles of chemotherapy, 14 cycles of radiation and nine cycles of antibodies before finishing treatment in May 2014. He relapsed in a month later, when doctors found a dime-sized tumor in his brain, prompting emergency surgery. Prestun then received two cycles of radiation and antibodies, finishing treatment in June 2016 before doctors again found a small tumor on the back of his head last September. He underwent another surgery the day before his birthday Sept. 16. One of the toughest parts of it all for the Seibels is that Prestun’s main doctors have never been local: They are all at Memorial

Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. “This unknown variable (of relapsing) resets our ‘scan-xiety,’” Matt Seibel said. “You have to do them (scans) every two to three months, and then we can space them further out. The best doctors for his disease, in our opinion, are in New York. Those guys are our team; they saved his life numerous times.” SUPERHERO SOLDIERS ON
In Kansas, Tiffany and Prestun were rarely ever home. And if they were, the commutes for his care were strenuous. They traveled four hours one way just to go to the clinic, get his labs done and see the doctor. It would turn into a 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. ordeal they would endure for four years, until the move to West Orange last year. And although Prestun doesn’t look sick and is able to go to school, the possibility of the cancer coming back is always unnerving. “It scares me being away from him eight hours a day,” Tiffany Seibel said. “He’s starting to make it full-time in school now. It’s hard to fundraise now, because he doesn’t look sick anymore. That’s good, but the bills don’t stop.” Prestun and Tiffany were in New York in March for an emergency MRI and most recently made the trip back in the first week of April for routine scans. It’s their fifth
trip to the city in six months. Because the warm weather is easier on Prestun’s joints and overall health, Orlando was the best option for the family. But with Tiffany unable to work fulltime because of the possibility of having to fly Prestun to New York, Matt Seibel’s business is taking a hit. Additionally, the couple’s two older daughters, ages 17 and 18, wanted to stay behind in Kansas at college or with family friends. “You do what you’ve got to do; everything is now, now, now with Prestun,” Tiffany Seibel said. “Not next week, not next month, it’s now.” But despite all he’s been through, Prestun’s sunny disposition rarely ever disappears. The happy-go-lucky boy loves swimming, kicking around a soccer ball and playing video games. “His doctor always said, ‘I don’t know how he’s so happy after all he’s been through,’” Tiffany Seibel said. “I think he’s just gotten so used to this. This has been his life since he was 3 years old, unfortunately. It’s not the normal childhood he should have. I was told from the get-go I’d have a year with him. I’m thankful for the fight, but at the same time, it’s tiring.” Contact Danielle Hendrix at dhendrix@orangeobserver.com.

Located in the 800 building, the gallery fills the space that previously was occupied by the school store. Because the students use electronic devices in class, supplies such as pens and paper weren’t needed, so the school decided to shut down the store and turn it over to the art department. In January, the art department began work on converting the neglected store into their new gallery, clearing out the unwanted school supplies and painting the walls. Now, the walls are covered in a variety of students’ artwork, from photographs to paintings. “They talked about it for a really long time, so it’s great that it’s finally opening,” said junior Alexis Romesco. “It helps the students showcase their creativity and what they can do.” For Kacy Cartwright, the chance to showcase her artwork in the gallery serves as an inspiration. “I really like it because it gives me a chance to display my work,” the junior said. “None of the students at school ever sees what I do, and I put hours and hours into my work. (The gallery) makes me more motivated to put more stuff in here.” The school held a soft opening for the gallery earlier in March, but many students saw it for the first time during the grand opening. To mark the occasion, students gathered outside the gallery to listen to music from the school’s Jazz Band and Concert Choir, while several of the senior art stu-

dents set up easels in the courtyard to work on their art. After a short presentation from Principal Laura Beusse, the ribbon to the gallery was cut, and the doors opened. “This is what makes education powerful,” Beusse said about the opening of the gallery. “The more opportunities we have to showcase their talents, the better. This is our playing ground for our artists.” The Knight Gallery will operate like most other art galleries, changing out the artwork on a regular basis to feature different artists. Currently, the display features photographs, drawings, watercolor paintings, acrylic paintings and graphic designs. “This is a great way to show the talents that the school possesses,” said senior Katelyn Murphy, who had a photograph featured in the gallery. Because the gallery is located on school grounds, anyone who is interested in visiting it must make an appointment with the school’s front office, but Bergh said the school would be happy to give tours to anyone who visits. To know him was to become his friend. There was no such thing as strangers with Octavious Altemus King. He was the definition of an extrovert, and his genuine smile, laughter and sense of humor created a pull that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. That is the kind of soul King’s friends and family lost Feb. 24 – when King, 26, died at the Armor CrossFit of Ocoee from cardiac arrest because of an enlarged heart condition. Born on March 12, 1990, King graduated in 2010 from West Orange High School. He was a pharmacy technician at RX Plus pharmacy in Sanford and was studying physical therapy at Valencia College, with the hope of eventually making it his career and making his future paradise home in Hawaii. Family members and friends remember King for his love of travel, CrossFit and God. FAITH

father left the country shortly after. He was raised mostly by his grandmother, Ella Mae Whitehead, in Georgia, but had to move back to live with his mom when she was released. According to his video testimonial, his challenging circumstances took a toll on his personality as a kid, but turning to God helped him rise above his situation and become a better person. He is fondly remembered as being spiritual, as he regularly volunteered his time between his job and CrossFit to serve God in any way he could — as a youth counselor and a missionary and by feeding the homeless. Kemor King, his half-brother, was touched when he found a prayer list from a youth retreat in a pile of notes among his belongings after his passing. “I really love that he made it his intention to pray for every person individually and not just a blanket request for God to bless all the youth on that retreat,” Kemor said. FAMILY
Connecting with others was King’s specialty. As his brother and best friend Juan Arboleda described, King was the kind of person who genuinely listened to others. And of all the things he’d miss about his brother, Kemor said he’d miss his hugs and the way King was always so present in their conversations. “He was so loving and giving to everyone,” Kemor said. “I would say he built and picked his family as time went on, because he didn’t grow up with much of a solid familial system.” Arboleda, who met King six years ago, worked together with King and went on several travel trips together. He said King was like the little brother he never had, one with a contagious smile, authentic personality and happygo-lucky demeanor. “His family was pretty much anyone who was close to him —

it wasn’t just blood,” said Keith Barber, King’s friend and CrossFit buddy. “He took you in as family when you guys made that bond.” CROSSFIT
King also loved CrossFit. Nothing got in the way of his gym sessions, which he did four days a week with Barber, a coach at CrossFit Armor of Ocoee who grew close with King after meeting him at a competition in 2016. “CrossFit was his oxygen,” Kemor said. “He was very dedicated. He wanted to really make a change and do something with his life to shake it up. And so he started doing CrossFit.” King, who Kemor said was a little heavier as a kid, picked up his CrossFit hobby about seven years ago. Since then, he had attended the gym religiously, rain, shine or even on vacation. King was dedicated. “He was the one structuring the workouts and programming everything,” Barber said. “It was great to see his motivation not only in CrossFit but (also) in life.” The manner in which King lived his life and treated others inspired awe and admiration in all those who were close to him and has left a legacy that will live on forever in their hearts and minds. “He truly did live every day,” said Fatima Barraza, King’s sisterin-law. “He lived a purposeful life, and that’s something that, after his passing, has become my goal.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

CFCA player returns to diamond Justin Milroy had played just one game for the Eagles this spring when appendicitis landed him in the hospital. After recovering, the left fielder had three hits in his first game back. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR
Justin Milroy had been plenty excited about playing baseball for the first time in four years. Milroy, a home-schooled student who plays his varsity athletics at Central Florida Christian Academy in Ocoee, already had been playing football and basketball for the Eagles along with his twin brother, Jared. The Milroy brothers decided to give baseball a go this year, and Justin had found that he was really liking his new teammates. OCOEE

His coaches — Larry and Taylor Oldham — also made him feel welcome even though he had not played for a few years. So, after the basketball team made a run in the state playoffs that did not end until Feb. 24, Milroy joined the team for his first game on Feb. 27 against City of Life Christian Academy — a 7-6 victory for the Eagles. It was an enjoyable first game, but then the next day, Milroy developed a pain in his stomach that rendered him nearly immobile and that caused repeated SEE MILROY PAGE 16

A trio of wins last week — including two district victories against Wekiva — brings the record of the West Orange baseball team to 14-3 on the spring. The Warriors take on Lake Brantley this week in a pair of key district games, including a home game against the Patriots at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7.

Milroy returns with 3 hits
SPONSORED BY MARK’S FLOORS
Jay Garver Jay Garver grew up with a soccer ball and is all about speed. Since the seventh grade, he has participated in three different sports at Foundation Academy — soccer, cross country and track. Now in eighth grade, Jay is excited to keep doing all three sports as a freshman in high school.
Which of the three sports is your favorite? Soccer. I like to run, but I prefer soccer. I’ve grown up with a ball on my foot. My dad played it. I like dribbling and shooting, and it feels good when I score. Which of the three sports is the most challenging? Cross country. I enjoy cross country, but I feel like when I run track, I know the course really well because it’s a circle. In cross country, it’s all over the place, and it’s more running. I do one mile in track, but in cross country, it’s like oneand-one-half or two miles.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15
THE BASICS SCHOOL: Foundation Academy GRADE: Eighth SPORTS: Soccer, cross country, track FASTEST MILE TIME: 5:21
How fast are you? My goal this year to is get at least under 5:15 or 5:10 for a mile. The best I’ve done so far is 5:21. I can’t wait to start growing. I feel like I’m small, so I can’t wait to get longer legs so I can go faster. What are your favorite TV shows? “Walking Dead” and “Arrow.” What is your favorite subject at school? My favorite subject is math, but my favorite course is language arts, because I really like the teacher. She’s really fun.
Which do you like better: competing by yourself or as part of a team? I like playing with a team. If you mess up as a team, it’s not all on you. But in cross country and track, if you get tired, it’s all on you.
— BRITTANY GAINES
How do you balance doing all three sports plus your homework? It’s really crazy. I do better under pressure, but I’m so glad soccer, cross country and track are not all together during the year. And I play soccer with a club all year long, so after track, I go to my club soccer.
vomiting. Milroy had appendicitis and was taken to the hospital that evening, where he had surgery at around 11 p.m. Although he ultimately recovered, the surgery required him to miss two weeks of action early in the season. “It was disappointing coming into baseball, having a game and enjoying it, and then letting myself and the team down by not being available for two weeks,” Justin Milroy said. It was a scary evening for the Milroy family. But prior experience with appendicitis meant the family could anticipate how things would progress. Jared Milroy had his appendix rupture two years ago and other family members had had it happen, as well.
“Because his twin brother had had the same procedure done, they were expecting this may happen to him,” head coach Larry Oldham said. “So, as soon as he had this pain, they got him right into the hospital.” In the meantime, Oldham and the team did their best to lift up their teammate while he was recovering. “The Milroy boys are so determined and they love to contribute in every way,” Oldham said. “It’s just in their genetic code that they’re hard workers, and they’ve been raised extremely well. We just encouraged him and as soon as he could swing a bat and the doctor said he was cleared we got him out there and gave him some extra batting practice.” Until then, Milroy leaned on his family and his Christian
faith to keep perspective. “I remembered that ‘Well, at least I’m able to play,’” Milroy said. “I was grateful because I knew I was going to be able to get back into it.” Milroy returned March 27 against Covenant Christian and — to the surprise of many — went 3-for-3 for the Eagles that day in a victory. “It was most impressive for him to just come back out of the hospital and just hit that ball,” Oldham said. Happy to be back in left field and out of the house, Milroy said he is enjoying his return to the baseball diamond. “This has been a lot of fun,” Milroy said. the playoffs, where they were defeated in the quarterfinals. The Eagles put it together in 2017, though, first winning their cluster and then the county. “Some of those guys came back as eighth-graders, and we finally got over the hump,” Miranda said. “This is probably our strongest team, by far. It’s a good bunch of kids and they were really focused.” SunRidge won each of its 10 victories by at least 10 points, including two victories over Carver. With the pressure on in the championship game, Miranda said his team displayed maturity. “Clutch play and free throws toward the end of the game (were big),” Miranda said. “Being smart and not turning over the ball was big for us.” Trey Moss led the team offensively, averaging 23 points per game, including 14 points in
the fourth quarter alone of the championship game. On the boards, Joanes Polynice averaged seven rebounds per contest while blocking eight shots, total, this season. Other standout performances include that of William Held, the team’s defensive MVP, and Stone Rivers, the recipient of the team’s Sixth Man award. Miranda also praised frontcourt players Steven Stutsman and Parmveer Singh, as well as team manager Derrick McRae. Four Eagles — Brian Sanchez, Brady Scott, Jalen DeBose and Diems Narcisse — will be returning next season, while the other players will all move to the high-school level, with most attending West Orange. There, Miranda is confident they will compete to make the team and continue to represent the program at SunRidge well.

HORIZON WEST
ettering spells out “Home Sweet Home” across a blue-stained piece of wood pallet, while a smaller wood sign is painted white and stamped, “This Is Us.” The rustic signs are the handiwork of Horizon West residents and British natives Tina Butler and Belinda Szaranek White. The two women are the creative masterminds behind their side business, Heart & Two Souls. They take their creativity and turn it into craftsmanship through the design and production of home décor — mostly signs and small pieces of furniture.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Butler said she and White always found it hard to decide on a name, but the main reason is simple: They put their heart and soul into every piece they make. They also decided to combine their names and make the official name “Heart and Two Souls by Beltina.” Most signs range from $12 to $55.

Meet the soul sisters CONTINUED FROM PAGE 22
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
It started about three years ago, when Butler’s father died. She knew she couldn’t sit around the house without getting upset, and although she said she’s never been crafty, she found herself at Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts. “I went to Jo-Ann’s and got wooden letters, scrap paper and embellishments and made it for my daughter and put it on Facebook,” Butler said. “My friends went, ‘I love it! Can you make me some?’ Then, Belinda offered to craft together one day, and that’s how it all started — buying bits at Jo-Ann’s, making things, and friends would buy them. We’d laugh, chat and cry together. It just started from there and slowly we went into designing our own pieces and cutting the wood ourselves.” But there’s also a story behind the friendship. Although the Butlers have been in Florida for more than a decade, the Whites relocated from England about three years ago and purchased the Butlers’ lawn business. “Where we lived in England, they lived five to 10 minutes down from the road, and Belinda worked not even five minutes away from me and yet we’d never met each other,” Butler said. “We ended up meeting 4,500 miles from our home years later. It’s just two English mums that love to craft and make things.”
CREATIVITY MEETS CRAFTSMANSHIP
Once the duo got serious about their crafting, their husbands bought the equipment they needed to cut the wood and print stencils. Their style changes with the trends, but at the moment, they are working on many farmhousestyle, shabby-chic pieces. The duo uses reclaimed wood on a majority of the projects. It’s great for the rustic, shabby-chic style, Butler said, because it’s not smooth and there are imperfections. They create everything from signs to kitchen trays, planter boxes, small coffee tables and vinyl lettering. Now, the two are even starting to test the waters with refurbishing furniture. Everything they’ve done so far is self-taught. Butler’s husband worked in a cabinet factory for years, so he has some working knowledge of woodworking that comes in handy. If Butler and White want to make something in particular, they can always turn to YouTube, Pinterest or Google for guidance — but they always create things with their own twist. “We design everything ourselves and then cut the stencils and paint using the stencils,” Butler said. “The designing takes more time than anything. I could sit there for three hours trying to design something for someone: It could be a three-letter or fourword sign, but it would take me that time to find the right font or layout. Other times, it could take 20 minutes to do something. It depends on what the person is looking for.”
Offices in Celebration and Windermere B L U E S K Y R E A LT Y G R O U P
Multi-Lingual Offices
One of the best parts of the business is seeing the looks on happy customers’ faces once they see their completed pieces, Butler said. And looking back on her and White’s handiwork from three years ago always reminds them how far they’ve come. “In those three years, it’s like chalk and cheese; it’s completely different,” she said. “But we love doing it. Even if we don’t have any orders, we still make stuff. It’s relaxing and we enjoy doing it. Not everything comes out perfect, and I do have some complete failures, but I love doing it.”
“Home — Where Love Begins & Never Ends” sign: $50
HEART-FILLED BUSINESS
Although White and Butler don’t want the business to become a production line, they’d be happy to have more to produce. Currently, the pair is fulfilling custom orders and putting some work into different stores. So far, they’ve had some items go to Sweet, Sassy and Southern at The Grove Orlando, and the two just opened a booth at The Mill in Altamonte Springs. They also work with a couple of Realtors, who buy custom-designed signs for clients as housewarming gifts. “In the future, we’d love to have our own store, but it’s a big investment and very time-consuming,” Butler said. “But for now, even if we didn’t get to the store, I’d like to have it where we’re constantly having orders and things to create for other people. Now is when we’re trying to really launch it.”
