Rick Scott headed to Southwest Orange County Tuesday to celebrate Fresh Express’ corporate headquarters’ move to the area. Fresh Express, a subsidiary of Chiquita, is a retail salad package producer, and its offices are now located in The Grove Orlando. In Central Florida, the company will add 90 Fresh Express jobs and 30 IT jobs for Chiquita, a marketer and distributor of bananas and pineapples. Chiquita’s headquarters move to Dania Beach in South Florida, where 90 jobs will be added. “Because of our great business climate — the most important thing we can do is create a business climate that everybody wants to do business in our state — they’ve relocated right here in the great state of Florida,” Scott said. “What’s exciting is Chiquita and Fresh Express have relocated, and it will be 200 more jobs for Florida families.” In early 2015, the Cutrale Group

Nord Anglia Education Inc. has sold the parcel of Windermere Preparatory School at 6189 Winter Garden-Vineland Road to W.P. Carey Inc. April 1, according to Nord Anglia Education officials. This $47.8 million sale is the first part of a three-school sale between the two this year. Sarah Doyle, head of brand for Nord Anglia Education, said each school will have a leaseback agreement, as well, with Windermere Prep’s set at 25 years to lease its 46.42 acres. The total sale price will be $167 million and include North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek and The Village School in Houston, with expectations to complete those two sales in May, she said. “These sale and leaseback agreements are in line with our usual approach,” Doyle said. “Rather than owning the properties, we prefer to enter into longterm leases — usually 20 to 25 years — with high-quality landlords who are prepared to partner with us to further invest in the facilities, enabling us to provide best-in-class environments for our students to learn in.” Doyle said Nord Anglia Education had plans to enter such agreements in 2016 for these schools since the company acquired each property last year. W.P. Carey was a match as an international real estate investment trust with extensive sale and leaseback experience to go with sharing Nord Anglia Education’s desire to provide the best educational atmospheres, she said.

Within the deal, W.P. Carey must invest up to a combined $128 million into the day and boarding capacity of these three schools, which includes recent Windermere Prep expansion plans in the Orange County development process, Doyle said.

Now, Horizon West-based production company Spirit Movie Productions is bringing them to the big screen in one of its latest projects, “On Your Street.” The film, which has been in development for nearly a year, is based on a true story of two sisters who are unwillingly introduced to the world of human trafficking. One of the characters, Claire, meets a boy at a park, and they invite friend Maddy and her sister to a party. The plot takes a dark twist when they arrive and realize it isn’t at all what they expected. “It goes to show that when you meet people, sometimes they seem like the most clean-cut boy next door, and you just never know,” said screenwriter and producer Michelle Brown. Brown has always had a passion for working on projects dealing with social issues, especially those with today’s youth. Her last project was about teen cutting, and from there she began researching other issues prominent in today’s society. “I started researching human trafficking, and I was appalled at the figures and what I found out, the statistics and how prominent it is in the U.S.,” she said. “It’s not just an international problem. From there, I started meeting with different organizations, talked to different people and wrote the screenplay.” The process began with writing the screenplay and then finding the cast. Brown hired a local cast-

ing director to help, and they had talent from as far away as Louisiana audition. The actors went through casting, callbacks and a chemistry read before filming. “I jump at any opportunity to act, so while they didn’t really specify in the breakdown when the audition notice went out what (the film) was about, once the casting process started going through, they started telling me more, that it’s about sex trafficking,” said Bailey Gavulic, who plays a character named Cindy. “It’s a really important thing that needs to be distributed for public knowledge.” Megan Brown, who took on one the main roles as Maddy, hopes that people who view the film will take it as a learning experience and be cautious about who they meet. “The movie will be a really big eye-opener to people, especially younger kids and teens,” Megan said. “Even though it happens to everybody at every age, the primary age is 11 to 14 and that’s why one of the actors in (the film) is 12 years old. I hope everyone learns from it and knows that not everybody you meet is going to have great intentions and is going to be an amazing person.” “On Your Street” will be highlighted as a featured film at the International Christian Film Festival April 28 to 30 in Orlando, and Michelle Brown said she hopes to get it into schools to spread the word on the dangerous industry and how close it is to home. “I hope people realize that this is a serious problem in the U.S., that Florida is No. 3 statistically for human trafficking,” Michelle

Brown said. “If you have a teenager, they’re at risk. A human-trafficking organization told me that the No. 1 place to pick up these girls is malls and parks, and this is very real. I hope people walk away from this and are a little more cautious, that they check out their kids’ friends and their daughters’ boyfriends.” Although Michelle Brown hopes it will be a learning opportunity for the community, it already has been an eye-opening one for her cast. Tre’Len Johnston, who plays Carlos, mentioned how deceiving the traffickers can be in luring girls into the industry. “I didn’t know much about that, so I did my research and was like, ‘Oh, that’s a really good cause,’ and I had no idea about it,” said Zoe Rosenfield, who plays Ginger. “I knew this would be an amazing thing to bring awareness.” Victoria Rodriguez’s character, Ava, is already sold into sex slavery in the film, so she got to learn more of what human-trafficking victims experience. “Having to go through that emotion, the pain and anger she had to go through, it was such an amazing thing to do and understand,” Rodriguez said. cho Factory co-founders Nedal Ahmad and Otto Othman went into a family barbecue to celebrate the Fourth of July and came out of it with plans to create a restaurant. “He (Nedal) was always known to make amazing burgers, and I had taken along some of my mom’s kebabs, the pinchos,” said Othman, Pincho Factory’s chief marketing officer. “A few drinks later, I looked at him and said ‘Dude, let’s open a restaurant. Your burgers and my mom’s kebabs.’ Two days later he called and said he was looking at sites and had already spoken with a few landlords.” Nedal had a background in commercial real estate, and Othman’s was in advertising and marketing, where he’d previously worked on campaigns for companies such as Mars and Fiat. The two agreed that Othman would take on the marketing and branding, while Nedal did the cooking. Every day after work for four months, the two — along with Nedal’s younger brother, Nizar, the third co-founder and director of training — would meet and

Nedal would cook. They would taste test and decide which combinations, blends and recipes were just right for their vision. But although the restaurant was in the works, Nedal called Othman one day and told him they had to open it immediately one Saturday. They didn’t even have a trained staff or plates to serve the food on yet, but Nedal’s plea was a desperate one: He had only $6.27 left in his bank account.

“My birthday was on that Thursday and I said I would invite a few friends and had him bring some team members,” Othman said. “We trained them during my birthday party and opened on Saturday.” The grand opening was a successful one, with 400 people in attendance. Soon after, Pincho Factory began receiving awards for its food and became a recognizable name throughout South Florida. “People started driving to get to our little hole in the wall, and today we are a Latin-influenced burger and kebab joint,” Othman said. The menu includes a variety of burgers and pincho entrées, along with chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, fries and tater tots.

Additionally, there are craft beers and wine, including the special 627 ale, named after the $6.27 Nedal had in his bank account when the restaurant opened. The brand has five locations in Miami and now the first Central Florida location in Dr. Phillips. Nedal said the response in Dr. Phillips has been overwhelming. “It’s been way beyond our expectations,” Nedal said. “Around 12:05 p.m. on opening day came, the line was out the door, and I almost had tears in my eyes. the afternoon of April 8, there were more questions and answers about Orange County governance than about paintings and sculptures at the Orlando Museum of Art. BusinessForce hosted the first debate between Winter Garden Commissioner Bobby Olszewski and Oakland businesswoman Betsy VanderLey, frontrunners in the race to replace outgoing District 1 Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd. Tension flared when Ols-zewski repeatedly attacked VanderLey’s record on votes related to schools as a member of the county Planning & Zoning Commission — after each had given a closing statement. “We have to find ways to site our schools appropriately in West Orange County, in the highest growth area in the county,” VanderLey said in closing. “They’re calling for a relief school to come online when a school is at 150% capacity. When you’re in an area like Horizon West, next year it’s at 200%. We’ve got to find ways to give the school board tools to get those schools on the ground faster, to respond to high growth that we have.” “You’ve consistently voted against schools,” Olszewski interjected.

VanderLey said the only time she had voted against any school was a kindergarten-througheighth-grade school in East Orange County because it was prohibited in the rural settlement developers sought. But Olszewski insisted she had voted against a relief high school in Wedgefield and instead voted for hundreds of new homes to support developers. VanderLey said the projects were entirely unrelated. Olszewski also said VanderLey essentially would be a third term of Boyd, citing her management of his campaigns. VanderLey said she and Boyd have been good friends but have disagreements. “It’s not Scott Boyd’s third term,” VanderLey said. “I’ve been married 25 years, and I don’t always agree with my husband; he’s my favorite person on the planet. Scott and I have a long friendship … but that doesn’t mean we agree all the time. … There are things I want to do that have never been on his radar.” Olszewski also criticized Boyd’s governing style as not transparent

and said he was anointing VanderLey as his successor. “It’s important to see that we can stop a culture of cronyism, because the one thing I can assure you is I have never had a conflict in any vote I’ve ever made … and will never,” he said. “My family doesn’t own land in the district that needs to be developed, nor does my employer make a dime from any vote that I will ever make on the ... commission.” VanderLey said the notion of an anointment was frustrating. “If only this were a coronation — my feet wouldn’t be so tired, and I’d be able to go home and see my family once in a while,” she joked. “The reality is the voters are going to vote … on the merits, based on the experience each of us has. … I think that’s insulting to the voters, frankly, to say that one person is that powerful to decide who their successor is. This is a democracy.” Olszewski cited his record on the Winter Garden City Commission, which he said reflected his ability to promote smart growth through the most enhanced property values in the county. Barber grew up in Winter Garden, graduating in 1991 from West Orange High School and in 1995 from the University of South Florida in Tampa. He was known for his energetic personality; his ability to entertain through his onstage persona, Tweeka Weed; and his eagerness to assist in philanthropic endeavors. He raised funds for political figures and local charities and was an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness. “He started as my hairdresser and progressed rapidly to one of my closest confidants,” co-organizer Tammy Humphrey said. “When he became ill, a group of us promised we’d keep his memory alive by establishing the Barber Fund.” Barber’s family has remained supportive of the organization. His mother, Nancy Barber; sister, Robin Branch; and niece, Ellie Branch, will be volunteering at the tournament. “The Barber Fund had its inception when John was diagnosed with cancer five-and-ahalf years ago,” Nancy Barber said. “Within two weeks, John’s friends, led by Blue Star, a fellow entertainer and longtime friend, organized a highly successful fundraiser to help John with his expenses.”

Of all the things Fothergill makes, he likes to specialize in Florribean cuisine: Florida seafood with Caribbean vegetables. “Snapper can be done many ways,” Fothergill said. “But one of the ways I like to do it is green plantain crust, so the fish is crusted in green plantains, and then I’ll make a coconut cream sauce. I may throw in a mango cream sauce or mango salsa.” The passion for Caribbean food comes from Fothergill’s roots. His parents, who were from Jamaica, taught him how to cook Caribbean. He moved to Florida when he was 18, and after a few years ago spending time in Florida, he thought to combine the two. Val Demings joins students’ workout SOUTHWEST ORANGE When Girls on the Run at Southwest Middle invited Val Demings, District 10 candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, to speak to the girls, Demings decided she would join in the workout, too. “If we’re going to make an investment, it has to be all the way,” she said. She encouraged the girls to live to their full potential and aim to do things that could be considered unconventional for women, such as becoming engaged in math, technology and science, or pursuing careers such as becoming president or police chief. “It’s such a good program because they use fitness to motivate girls to live to their full potential,” Demings said of Girls on the Run.

Dr. Phillips baseball’s Chase Cheek went 3-for-3 with a double at the plate April 8 against Oak Ridge, driving in two runs and scoring twice in a 10-3 win for the Panthers.

The Olympia boys track and field team won the West Metro Conference Championship last week, besting runner-up Dr. Phillips by 10 points. First-place finishes included long jump (Jeff James), 4x400-meter relay, 400 meters (Damari Dacosta Moore) and shot put (Macon Rodier).

The Dr. Phillips girls track and field team had first-place finishes in six events and won the West Metro Conference Championship last week. Senior Annika Sison won first place in two individual events (1600 meters and 3200 meters) and had another first-place performance as part of the 4x800 meter relay team.

Olympia High alumna and North Carolina State University senior Riki Bonnema still has another semester of her undergraduate career to go, but the talented swimmer has wrapped up her run with the NC State swimming program.

A marine ecology major, Bonnema swims events ranging from the 50- and 100-meter freestyles to the 100-meter butterfly, medleys and relays. But perhaps one of the most notable achievements of her career to date is having competed in the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials the week of April 5. Bonnema, whose mother is Canadian, decided to compete in the Canadian Olympic Trials because she was ranked third in the 50-meter freestyle there. TITANIC WEEK Olympia High had a good week last week, earning district championships in boys and girls water polo and girls lacrosse. Additionally, the Titans boys and girls tennis teams advanced to state — as did the girls water polo team.

The Dr. Phillips flag football team extended its winning streak to seven games April 6 with a 26-0 shutout against West Orange. Kaylee Messina threw three touchdown passes, with Tiffany Tolbert catching two.

CFCA softball’s Aubrey Muench hit a grand slam April 11, helping the Eagles (17-5) to a 17-3 win in the opening round of the District 2A-3 Tournament. The Olympia Titans girls lacrosse team celebrated a fifth consecutive district championship April 7.

FHSAA selects Daytona

Per media reports, Daytona Beach has won a preliminary bid to host the eight state championship football games for the Florida High School Athletic Association. The bidding group and the FHSAA have until May 8 to finalize a deal that would run through the 2018 season. Daytona Beach, which has offered its Municipal Stadium as the championship venue, was selected over the Orlando Citrus Bowl.

ast week was a good week to be a Titan. Olympia High’s athletics department celebrated three district championships and two state tournament berths between April 6 and 9. Among the highlights for the Titans was a clean sweep of the District 3 Water Polo Championships April 6 at the YMCA Aquatic Center. For the first time, both Olympia’s boys and girls teams were crowned district champions in the same season as both defeat-

ed teams from rival Dr. Phillips; the Titans girls team won 13-7 and the boys team won 12-9. “It’s the first time in school history — which is really exciting,” said Stephanie Johnson-Possell, the head coach for both teams at Olympia. “I think it’s kind of unique for any program, anywhere to have that happen. So we’re proud of it.” For the boys, in particular, Wednesday night’s win was a big deal. While the Titans girls team had advanced all the way to the state tournament last season, SEE TITANS PAGE 17

Lymon recorded a bench press of 325 pounds and a clean-and-jerk of 230 pounds at the regional meet for a 555-pound total — 10 pounds ahead of the runner-up.

What was going through your mind when you placed first? A lot of emotions were going through my mind. I was happy and proud of myself because of what I accomplished this year. It was a surprise. What do you hope to accomplish at the state meet? To get first place and to get a ring on my finger!

extended a hitting streak to 21 games — a record for the program’s modern era. McNeill had hits in games on April 2 and April 3 before failing to register a hit in an April 8 game, ending his record-breaking hitting streak at 23 games. The hitting streak is the longest in the Southeastern Conference this season. McNeill’s success so far for the Wildcats is particularly noteworthy considering the path he took to play for Kentucky. With ties to the school through his father, who golfed collegiately for the Wildcats, McNeill left Florida International University after a strong freshman season in 2014 and played for Chipola Junior College in 2015. The decision to transfer from FIU and play for Chipola enabled McNeill to transfer to Kentucky ahead of the 2016 season and be immediately eligible to play. The Wildcats are currently in third place in the SEC East with an 8-4 conference record. Kentucky will be back in action this weekend in a three-game series against SEC rival Vanderbilt. Olympia’s boys had never won a district championship and also had lost to Dr. Phillips earlier in the season (10-6, March 8). Both teams took on Winter Park a few days later on April 9 in FHSAA First-Round Play-In Games. Although the Olympia boys saw their season end with a 10-5 loss to the Wildcats, the Titans girls team won 6-4 to earn a second consecutive trip to the state tournament in South Florida at the Ransom Everglades Aquatic Center. Olympia will take on Lake Brantley in the state quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 15. The semifinals are later that day at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the state championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. Olympia’s girls lacrosse team continued its pursuit of a third consecutive final-four appearance with a dominant 24-5 win over Dr. Phillips in the District 13 Championship at Celebration High School. baseball team did something last week that it had not previously done with any of its current players on the roster: beat Olympia. In fact, the Warriors did it twice. The Warriors’ current seniors were freshmen the last time West Orange topped the Titans, back on March 13, 2013, but none was playing varsity. Olympia swept the Warriors in 2014 and 2015 — a favor West Orange returned last week with an 8-1 victory at Olympia April 6 and a 6-1 victory in Winter Garden April 8. The Warriors (20-2) hit four home runs over the course of the two games, with Kole Enright, Chris Seise and Roberto Guillen (who homered twice) getting in on the fun. With the win, West Orange completed a perfect 8-0 run in District 9A-3. A loss to Apopka March 24 came during the Central Florida Spring Break Slam and did not count toward district standings. “To us, it really doesn’t matter who we’re playing this year,” head coach Jesse Marlo said. “It’s just coming out and going about the game the right way — coming out with energy and swinging bats the way we should be.” Although the Titans (11-12) likely were disappointed by the pair of losses to a rival, head coach Chuck Schall’s team may not have too long to wait before getting a third — and final — shot at the Warriors. West Orange is the No. 1 seed for the Class 9A, District

With the knowledge that, even as the No. 1 seed, West Orange will not have an easy road to the state playoffs, Marlo said his veteran team will be mentally prepared for the task at hand. “They all know what’s on the line out there,” Marlo said. “It doesn’t matter what happens in the regular season. … We’ve just got to come out and be ready to go when it comes district time.”
