Remembering Gail Kiehm
A potential new spot on the Orange County Commission isn’t the only big change coming to Bobby Olszewski. The Winter Garden commissioner and his wife, Allison, announced via social media that they are expecting. They’ve also adopted a hashtag, #BabyOin2016!, for their new bundle of joy.
When you’re here, you’re family
Olive Garden restaurants are supporting local high schools with a series of Spirit Nights through a partnership with NFHS Network. From 4 to 10 p.m. on select nights, a portion of all in-restaurant sales will be donated to the school, up to $1,000 per restaurant. Three West Orange schools will benefit from the Spirit Night. Dr. Phillips High’s designated day is Tuesday, April 12, at the restaurant at 12361 State Road 535, Orlando. West Orange High will benefit Tuesday, April 19, at the Olive Garden at 7300 W. Colonial Drive, Orlando. And Windermere Preparatory School’s Spirit Night is Tuesday, April 19, at the location at 8984 International Drive, Orlando.

The event took place April 9 and 10 along Plant Street, where vendors set up with products ranging from plants to gardening tools and outdoor furniture. Visitors were able to speak to garden experts and have their questions answered, and children got to enjoy a special Kids’ Zone. Additionally, patrons enjoyed a silent auction and raffle, food trucks and multiple educational programs. — DANIELLE HENDRIX AND AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE

ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER ORLANDO For the
afternoon of April 8, there were more questions and answers about Orange County governance than about paintings and sculptures at the Orlando Museum of Art. BusinessForce hosted the first debate between Winter Garden Commissioner Bobby Olszewski and Oakland businesswoman Betsy VanderLey, frontrunners in the race to replace outgoing District 1 Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd. Tension flared when Olszewski repeatedly attacked VanderLey’s record on votes related to schools as a member of the county Planning & Zoning Commission — after each had given a closing statement. “We have to find ways to site our schools appropriately in West Orange County, in the SEE DEBATE PAGE 8

PUBLIC COMMENTS
Resident Henry Morgan asked the commission and city staff to check on Florida Department of Transportation construction near Bluford Avenue and Maguire Road. Commissioners assured him they would have staff examine this issue. Later, in the consent agenda, the commission renewed with FDOT a threeyear fixed annual $25,100 contract for state road maintenance. Costs will increase as State Road 50 corridor improvements are finished. Ocoee citizen Cheryl King cited a study showing crime worsening in the Clarke Road vicinity, to the point she said it showed trending toward Pine Hills levels within a decade as possible. District 4 Commissioner Joel Keller offered ideas such as enhancing the Neighborhood Watch and adding a tower to improve police line-ofsight coverage and dedicate staff to such coverage at night. Police Chief Charlie Brown said research into this issue has been underway. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

ail Kiehm has had two official titles at William Frangus Elementary School in her 24-year career there, but she has also been called “the heart and soul of Frangus,” said Ann Cherolini, a co-worker and friend. “She knew every parent, every child, how they got home, where they lived,” she said. The school received the heartbreaking news that Kiehm — the school’s registrar and former media clerk — died of liver cancer Friday, April 1, less than three months after getting the diagnosis. She thought initially she had diverticulitis. Kiehm helped open the school in 1992 and quickly became known for her willingness to offer assistance to anyone in need. Her principal, Dr. Ana M. Gonzalez, used a number of adjectives to describe the staff favorite: patient, gentle, caring, loving, steadfast, committed, professional, focused,
personable, empathetic, strong, vigilant, wise, graceful, tender, capable, humorous, diligent and intuitive. Gonzalez shared these sentiments in a letter to staff at Frangus, as well as all the educators at Orange County Public Schools: “She was a pillar in our community, someone who interacted with various generations of students and families here at Frangus Elementary, one who arrived when the gates opened each morning and one who would stay to ensure that the last child went home safely, one that would recall all the changes the school had undergone since it first opened … one who would always find humor in any difficult situation, one who cared for people without passing any judgment, one who felt a deep responsibility to her family and one who was supremely aware of the legacy that we leave behind by our actions and our words.” Shirley Cowans, a former Frangus principal and OCPS area superintendent, spoke highly of Kiehm, as well. “I worked with Gail Kiehm

from 1995-2003,” Cowans said. “I was the second principal of William Frangus Elementary, and I have many fond memories of Gail. Frangus was a fairly new school when I arrived, and I was responsible for initiating many academic programs while I served as the head of the school. One program … was the Accelerated Reading program. We established various levels of reading incentives, and my favorite was level 10. To get to level 10, students had to put in quite a bit of time reading at home and during free time at school. At level 10, students could order from a menu of their choice from restaurants near the school. This was a huge undertaking for me because I wanted to make the lunch time special for the students. “Well, all I had to do was to set the dates for the lunches,” Cowans said. “Gail jumped right in and made sure that each student received individual time with her looking over the menus and ordering what he or she wanted to eat. Sometimes, she would call parents to tell them when the students would be eating with me. … The parents would actually leave their jobs and come take pictures of the students eating lunch with me. … I think this was Gail’s favorite time, too. She loved seeing the students come to the office for the celebrations. “Gail was such a dedicated employee,” she said. “She practically lived at the school. As a matter of fact, I do not remember if she ever went home. She knew all of the students and their families. I could always count on her to keep me up to date about any special needs of our students. She will truly be missed by the Frangus community.” To keep Kiehm’s memory alive, the school is planning a special remembrance when the campus undergoes renovations in the next year. In the meantime, the family is asking for support through the Gail Kiehm Memorial Fund. For information, call Ann Cherolini, the secretary/bookkeeper, at (407) 296-6469. Kiehm, 58, was born in Vincenza, Italy. Survivors include her husband of 40 years, David; children, Jennifer Kiehm, Stephan Kiehm, Christina Flatt and Jessica Kiehm; and three grandchildren. For Kim Frey, it’s important that her customers like the taste of her cakes just as much as the look. On high-end cakes, fondant often is used to create smooth look and intricate designs, but many people don’t enjoy the

taste. So Frey came up with a solution. “Because people don’t like the taste of fondant, I do buttercream with fondant accents,” she said. “It also keeps the cost down of the cake.” Sometimes customers come to her with a personal photograph, and she is able to use an edible
printer to scan the photo into an edible image that will appear on the top of the cake. She also likes to carve cakes into unique designs, like the head of an alligator. In 2014, Frey officially started Say Yes to the Cake by opening her Facebook page, but she has been making cakes since she was 16. Frey bakes cakes for birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. She is also a wedding planner, decorating and working the wedding in addition to baking her own cakes. Although baking cakes is not her full-time job, she has made as many as 11 cakes in one weekend. Experience the glory days of golf — when knickers, caps and argyle were all the rage — and benefit a cancer fund at the same time. The first Barber Fund Golf Tournament is slated for Saturday, April 16, at the MetroWest Golf Club, 2100 S. Hiawassee Road, Orlando. The tournament cost is $100 for individuals and $400 for foursomes. Registration includes cart and greens fees and lunch. There will be competitions, entertainment and more. The tournament is presented by Everest University and hosted by Tammy Humphrey, Annie Mallory, Dixie L. Todd, Michelle Binkewicz and Central Florida entertainer Blue Star. The event hosts were friends of the late John Barber, a 38-yearold Central Florida resident who died of sinonasal carcinoma in 2011. He co-founded The Barber Fund before his death as a way to keep his spirit alive and to help others living with cancer. Barber grew up in Winter Garden, graduating in 1991 from West Orange High School and in 1995 from the University of South Florida in Tampa. He was known for his energetic personality; his ability to entertain through his onstage persona, Tweeka Weed;
and his eagerness to assist in philanthropic endeavors. He raised funds for political figures and local charities and was an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness. “He started as my hairdresser and progressed rapidly to one of my closest confidants,” co-organizer Tammy Humphrey said. “When he became ill, a group of us promised we’d keep his memory alive by establishing the Barber Fund.” Barber’s family has remained supportive of the organization. His mother, Nancy Barber; sister, Robin Branch; and niece, Ellie Branch, will be volunteering at the tournament. “The Barber Fund had its inception when John was diagnosed with cancer five-and-ahalf years ago,” Nancy Barber said. “Within two weeks, John’s friends, led by Blue Star, a fellow entertainer and longtime friend, organized a highly successful fundraiser to help John with his expenses.” Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@orangeobserver.com.

Our goal is to provide increased leadership and improved financial capabilities to better service our customers.” Specific terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

District 1 debate

highest growth area in the county,” VanderLey said in closing. “They’re calling for a relief school to come online when a school is at 150% capacity. When you’re in an area like Horizon West, next year it’s at 200%. We’ve got to find ways to give the school board tools to get those schools on the ground faster, to respond to high growth that we have.” “You’ve consistently voted against schools,” Olszewski interjected. VanderLey said the only time she had voted against any school was a kindergarten-througheighth-grade school in East Orange County because it was prohibited in the rural settlement developers sought. But Olszewski insisted she had voted against a relief high school in Wedgefield and instead voted for hundreds of new homes to support developers. VanderLey said the projects were entirely unrelated. Olszewski also said VanderLey essentially would be a third term of Boyd, citing her management of his campaigns. VanderLey said she and Boyd have been good

friends but have disagreements. “It’s not Scott Boyd’s third term,” VanderLey said. “I’ve been married 25 years, and I don’t always agree with my husband; he’s my favorite person on the planet. Scott and I have a long friendship … but that doesn’t mean we agree all the time. … There are things I want to do that have never been on his radar.” One idea VanderLey highlighted was connecting Horizon West trails to West Colonial Drive and the West Orange Trail, which she said would be phenomenal for ecotourism. Olszewski also criticized Boyd’s governing style as not transparent and said he was anointing VanderLey as his successor. “It’s important to see that we can stop a culture of cronyism, because the one thing I can assure you is I have never had a conflict in any vote I’ve ever made … and will never,” Olszewski said. “My family doesn’t own land in the district that needs to be developed, nor does my employer make a dime from any vote that I will ever make on the Orange County Commission.” VanderLey said the notion of an anointment was frustrating. “If only this were a coronation — my feet wouldn’t be so tired, and I’d be able to go home and see my family once in a while,” she joked. “The reality is the voters are going to vote … on the merits, based on the experience each of us has. … I think that’s insult-

and plow everything down, build your houses and then replant small trees,” VanderLey said. “It really created a problem in terms of … how people wanted to live.” She said nowadays development must be more responsible, alluding to Oakland Park and trails as shining examples of preservation. Olszewski said Winter Garden also has been proud of Oakland Park. Olszewski cited his record on the Winter Garden City Commission, which he said reflected his ability to promote smart growth through the most enhanced property values in the county. He compared this to what he called out-of-control urban sprawl in unincorporated Orange County.

This is a democracy.” Olszewski said he was not disrespecting the thousands of voters he has spoken with on the campaign trail. “I’m the only candidate in this race that is on the ballot, even though I filed nine months after my opponent,” he said, referring to his Sept. 1, 2015 filing and VanderLey’s Jan. 30, 2015 filing. “I’ve been knocking on doors, and they are not happy with what’s going on in Orange County.” VanderLey focused on the balance of development with green spaces when asked for examples of good and bad Board of County Commissioners decisions. “The way that projects used to be approved back in the ’70s and ’80s was you could come through

DANIELLE LYNN RAVE: Bella Tuscany. This is the second time we have eaten here, and we were very happy each time. We have ordered the zucchini chops as an appetizer each time, and they are delightfully delicious. I ordered the lobster and artichoke risotto, and again, it didn’t disappoint. The portions are huge. I ate a good amount and still had plenty to bring home for two other meals. My husband has ordered a pasta dish each time (Carbonara and Pappardelle), and they were both delicious. My in-laws had the shrimp and asparagus risotto and the stuffed fish. They were both very pleased. We ordered the creme brûlée for dessert, and it was amazing. Thank you for a great meal. We will be back for sure.

The experience was a boon for him later, when he catered several concerts for pop group *NSYNC. “The one thing that I mentioned that really helped me get that work was the fact that I’ve done Passover,” he said. “With Passover food, it’s very hectic. It’s a lot of work.”

Of all the things Fothergill makes, he likes to specialize in Florribean cuisine: Florida seafood with Caribbean vegetables. “Snapper can be done many ways,” Fothergill said. “But one of the ways I like to do it is green plantain crust, so the fish is crusted in green plantains, and then I’ll make a coconut cream sauce. I may throw in a mango cream sauce or mango salsa.” The passion for Caribbean food comes from Fothergill’s roots. His parents, who were from Jamaica, taught him how to cook Caribbean. He moved to Florida when he was 18, and after a few years ago spending time in Florida, he thought to combine the two. He is passionate about his work and can’t imagine doing anything else. “I love what I do,” he said. “I’ve had several chances to get out of this, but I can’t.” To hire Anthony’s Catering and Consulting, call (407) 854-3305.

The grandiose and outlandish scenes of modern commercials often involve heavy usage of computer-generated imagery. But for online retailer Fingerhut’s commercial, filmed March 18 by Drive-Thru Productions on Lakeview Avenue in Winter Garden, a scene involving sheep used to mow the lawn is actually real. “This particular spot was about a dad that comes up with all these different solutions, kind of crazy
to come up with,” location manager Jules Keeley said. “He had this crazy rig, where there are sheep eating the grass … like it’s an actual machine. And then to trim the trees, he has this beaver, using it like a weed-whacker or a tree trimmer … those little crazy solutions to everyday problems.” Although the beaver was actually a puppet prop, the genuine sheep’s owners are West Orange High FFA students Savannah Redfern, Brianna Segal, Alyssa Stewart and Amanda Lopez. April Mackin, the Birds & Animals Unlimited animal coordinator for the shoot, raved about the FFA program at West Orange, where she met the girls to have the sheep practice so they could best meet the director’s vision. “If it wasn’t those sheep, it

Keeley said some neighbors have become accustomed to film production at the Connell residence where Drive-Thru filmed this commercial, but the girls walking along with these sheep drew attention. West Orange High students Savannah Redfern, left, Brianna Segal, Alyssa Stewart and Amanda Lopez raised sheep that starred in Fingerhut’s commercial in Winter Garden.
Location manager Jules Keeley noted locals who were glad to have film production in the area but not shocked to see it, and that is for good reason: Film Orlando officials declared Winter Garden the second-most filmed location in Central Florida. “Doubletree just filmed a commercial; a documentary called Machine Gun Preacher just had a film crew here; and just last week, Fingerhut filmed a commercial on Lakeview Avenue,” Winter Garden Economic Development Director Tanja Gerhartz said. “Just about any day of the week, you will find a photo shoot going on or see a film crew.” A burgeoning group of companies centered on creative work with film and other media — such as Florida Film Academy a stone’s throw from City Hall — has increased the number of productions in the area based on attraction to the small-town feel.

here are several ways one might sum up the progress the baseball program at Ocoee High has made in recent years, progress that has been spurred in no small part by its current senior class. Then again, Knights assistant coach Sonny Wise — who spent nearly three decades as the head coach at Apopka before taking up his role with Ocoee — might sum it up best with this simple observation: “They don’t throw their No. 3 guys at us no more.” The “they” Wise refers to are the upper-tier programs in Central Florida, some of which Ocoee has defeated for the first time in the past three years. These programs, generally, are no longer content to start a No. 3 pitcher — or a pitcher who generally doesn’t throw as often or have as much experience — against the Knights. SEE OCOEE PAGE 18

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
SPONSORED BY MARK’S FLOORS
Alex Thomas Alex Thomas has led the Foundation Academy softball team in RBIs with 22 as of the end of March and doubled at least twice as much as any teammate this season.
When did you start playing softball? When I was little, I actually started off with baseball, and then I switched to softball. It was a really big change, but it was still fun. I feel like there’s so many more different pitches in softball than there is baseball, because baseball just goes down. Softball, you can go up, down, left, right — all over the place. What about softball do you enjoy? I feel like it’s a good atmosphere. Having the right teammates helps, too, because my team is so encouraging and everything like that. They’re just really fun to be around. With all your RBIs, is there a difference in approach with runners on? Not really. I don’t really feel that pressure that much. I just kind of go up there and hope for the best. You just have to let it happen. Every single time you go up to bat, everyone wants to hit, but I

know that every single time you do go up to bat you’re not going to hit it. I just thank God when I do hit it. Which position is your favorite? I like catching a lot, just because I feel like I’m involved in every play, because obviously the pitcher goes to the catcher. You just feel like such a part of the game, and you’re in it all of the time. What is your favorite class? I would have to say my favorite class would be math, because I’m really good at math. I like math a lot. Is that something you plan to pursue? Well, I’m hoping to become a teacher, so probably I’d have to do a lot of math work to become a teacher. Where are you going to college for that? I’m committed to Emory and Henry College (Virginia). I’m having a signing day on the 26th or something. I’ll play softball there. What is something you’ll take from your Foundation experience? I would have to say the coaches are just always there for you, and they help you through everything. What movies do you like? I like comedy a lot, comedy movies.

Junior Bobby Head and the West Orange Warriors took a pair of district games from rival Olympia last week. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR WINTER GARDEN The
West Orange baseball team did something last week that it had not previously done with any of its current players on the roster: beat Olympia. In fact, the Warriors did it twice. The Warriors’ current seniors were freshmen the last time West Orange topped the Titans, back on March 13, 2013, but none was playing varsity. Olympia swept the Warriors in 2014 and 2015 — a favor West Orange returned last week with an 8-1 victory at Olympia April 6 and a 6-1 victory in Winter Garden April 8. The Warriors (20-2) hit four home runs over the course of the two games, with Kole Enright, Chris Seise and Roberto Guillen (who homered twice) getting in on the fun. With the win, West Orange completed a perfect 8-0 run through district play this spring in District 9A-3. A loss to Apopka March 24 came during the Central Florida Spring Break Slam and did not count toward district standings. “To us, it really doesn’t matter who we’re playing this year,” head coach Jesse Marlo said. “It’s just coming out and going about the game the right way — coming out with energy
and swinging bats the way we should be.” Although the Titans (11-12) likely were disappointed by the pair of losses to a rival, head coach Chuck Schall’s team may not have too long to wait before getting a third — and final — shot at the Warriors. West Orange is the No. 1 seed for the Class 9A, District 3 Tournament, meaning it will await the winner of Monday’s No. 4-versus-No. 5 game in the district semifinals on Wednesday, April 20. As the No. 4 seed, Olympia will be favored against fifthseeded Wekiva, and should the Titans prove victorious they would meet the Warriors with a playoff berth on the line. What’s more, the tournament is being hosted this spring by Olympia. With the knowledge that, even as the No. 1 seed, West Orange will not have an easy road to the state playoffs, Marlo said his veteran team will be mentally prepared for the task at hand. “They all know what’s on the line out there,” Marlo said. “It doesn’t matter what happens in the regular season. … We’ve just got to come out and be ready to go when it comes district time.”

The former West Orange Warrior’s 23-game hitting streak is the best in the Southeastern Conference this season. Gunnar McNeill has reached base in 30 of 31 games. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR
Gunnar McNeill sure knows how to make himself feel at home. Remarkably, the former slugger for the Warriors has reached base for the Wildcats
(22-9) in 30 of those 31 games. Not only does McNeill have that impressive achievement to his credit, but in just his first season with Kentucky, he has etched his name in the program’s record books. gram’s modern era. McNeill had hits in games on April 2 and April 3 before failing to register a hit in an April 8 game, ending his record-breaking hitting streak at 23 games. The hitting streak is the longest in the Southeastern Conference this season. McNeill’s success so far for the Wildcats is particularly noteworthy considering the path he took to play for Kentucky. With ties to the school through his father, who golfed collegiately for the Wildcats, McNeill left Florida International University after a strong freshman season in 2014 and played for Chipola Junior College in 2015. The decision to transfer from FIU and play for Chipola enabled McNeill to transfer to Kentucky ahead of the 2016 season and be immediately eligible to play. The Wildcats are currently in third place in the SEC East with an 8-4 conference record. Kentucky will be back in action this weekend in a three-game series against SEC rival Vanderbilt.

Ridge, West Orange (17-3) secured its first district title since the FHSAA began overseeing the sport in 2008. Prior to that, the Warriors had had significant success when the sport was overseen by US Lacrosse, including three appearances in the state semifinals. “We have 10 seniors that started on varsity as freshmen, so it’s very exciting to get them their first district championship,” head coach Mary Hopkins said. The Warriors started off fast and established their dominance

early, jumping out to a 9-0 lead just seven minutes and 40 seconds into the first half. West Orange went into halftime with a commanding 12-0 lead and coasted the rest of the way to its 18-0 win. The Warriors had a balanced attack, with Julia Dennis leading the way with six goals. As District 9 champion, West Orange will host Lake Highland Prep, which won District 10, in the First-Round Play-In Game at 7 p.m. April 15. The Highlanders are 15-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state by LaxPower.com’s computer rankings. West Orange is No. 9 in those same rankings.

It is an unspoken compliment to the turnaround in the program’s ability to compete with upper-tier programs, and it has been ongoing for three seasons now. The turnaround has included the program’s first wins against tradition-laden programs such as West Orange (last season) and Dr. Phillips (this season), a programbest 18 wins in 2015 and more notable firsts. It is the manifestation of the hard work of a senior class with the likes of Logan Cariglio, Noah Satterwhite, Matt Slaver, Garrett Butler, Andrew Bernstine, Jordan Brong and Trevor Daly — players who have been with the program all four years — as well as newaddition seniors such as Ryan Brewer. Their collective passion for the program melded well with the arrival of a new coaching staff for the spring 2014 season, led by former West Orange softball coach Bobby Brewer and Wise. “They told us that we didn’t have to be this bad team that everybody thought we were,” Satterwhite said of Brewer and Wise. “They said, ‘You guys are going to be what you make yourselves to be.’” The program took a big step toward that dream in 2015, finishing with an 18-9 record — a program-best in losses, also. During the Class of 2016’s junior season, there were glimpses of a vision players such as Cariglio had always had for the Knights. “Those seven games (during a winning streak), the way we played and the way we interacted with each other, was the way I feel like we always should,” Cariglio explained. The hope was that things would come together this spring, but things haven’t gone quite according to plan. Injuries have ravaged the Knights all spring, as has a flu bug that came at a particularly inconvenient time. Accordingly, Ocoee is just above .500 with a record of 12-11, though five of those losses have come in onerun ballgames.
Nate Marrero
The Warriors won their first district championship since the FHSAA began overseeing the sport.
Nevertheless, with the Class 8A, District 3 Tournament looming and to be played at home, the Knights’ seniors know they’re still one win away from the state playoffs. “This year we’ve had our rough stretches and injuries and stuff like that, but I still think we’re in a good position to do what we want to do,” Cariglio said. Such a playoff berth would be a first for the program, which never has advanced out of district play. “If you go back and look over the last three years that we’ve been here, we’ve done a lot of firsts,” Brewer said. “Everything we do is pretty much making history over here. We want to bring pride back to our program.” Brewer credits his seniors with creating a culture where players are willing to put in extra work on off days — something that was not always the case. “They want to be good, they want to be here, and they take ... pride in being at the ballfield,” Brewer said. “You have to run them away from the field now.” Seniors such as Satterwhite still feel good about the condition they are leaving the program in, despite of some disappointing losses this season. A young core that includes some freshmen getting playing time with varsity has shown flashes of great potential. “We’re going to be in good shape,” Satterwhite said of the program. “Four years of those kids in the weight room with Coach Hall and then out here with Coach Wise and Coach Brewer — they’ll be dangerous.” Mostly, there is a sense of pride in establishing the program as a destination that kids playing in Ocoee Little League or area travel-ball teams will now look forward to playing for one day instead of a program they might have tried to find a way out of in the past. “I get it, I get why they didn’t want to be here (in the past),” Brewer said. “But there’s no reason for that anymore.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.
