Property appraiser files libel lawsuit

Relief school slated for Waterbridge, Tangelo Park County and school district staff hosted a community meeting presenting a request for a large-scale future land use amendment for the property. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER

Rick Singh

SOUTHWEST ORANGE A new relief school for Waterbridge and Tangelo Park elementary schools could be on its way in time for the 2020-21 school year. County and school district staff hosted a community meeting at Sand Lake Elementary Wednesday, April 26, to discuss a largescale future land use amendment for the potential school property. The 19.96-acre property is located on the east side of South International Drive, south of Lake Forest Drive and north of Lake Bryan Beach Boulevard. Orange County Public Schools wants to change the current FLUM designation from activity center mixed use to educational. The request will be transmitted to the county’s Local Planning Agency June 15, and if all goes in its favor, the plan will be adopted by the Orange County Board of County Commissioners in November. “We currently have a school in our capital improvement plan for 2020 based on a few different factors,” said Julie Salvo, a senior administrator/planner with OCPS. “First and foremost, this school will relieve Waterbridge Elementary and Tangelo Park Elementary. We’e always wanted to find a school in the southern part of the county in this area to help make that zone smaller.” Salvo said Waterbridge currently is overcrowded, surpassing its 800-student capacity for its current population of 1,250. Tangelo Park is also expected to become overcrowded in the near future. The amendment, if passed, would allow for the development of an elementary school up to 100,000 square feet, as well as the development of a 50,000-squarefoot ancillary office building. The school will have a maximum capacity of about 830 students. District officials also aim to submit the rezoning request this summer, with the hope that both the amendment and zoning requests will be approved simultaneously this fall. The current zoning designations for the parcel are rural country estate and farmland rural. OCPS has the land under contract, and once the FLUM amendment and rezoning requests pass the district would then close on the parcel. “It’s (the school development) based on need, there’s a lot of growth in the area and the county has approved many multifamily projects near International Drive,” Salvo said. itizens and officials of the town of Windermere helped preserve history Friday, April 28, during the town’s monthly food truck event with the burying of a time capsule. The capsule, set to be opened in 2050, is a 12-inch-by-12-inch-by24-inch box, and even with all the items inside it was only a third full, Mayor Gary Bruhn said. All items inside and the box are sealed and protected with materials that will help ensure effective preservation for up to 100 years. Items included a Fitbit, smart watch, letter from the current mayor to the mayor of 2050, a Robbie German end-of-watch medallion lanyard, two copies of the Windermere Observer and a Windermere Elementary School yearbook. — DANIELLE HENDRIX

STAFF WRITER ORANGE COUNTY Citing several accusations that circulated during his re-election as Orange County Property Appraiser in 2016, Rick Singh has filed a libel lawsuit against two Political Action Committees. During an April 25 press conference, Singh, accompanied by two attorneys, insisted allegations made against him during the election race last year were “maliciously untrue.” Listed among the allegations made against Singh during the 2016 election was the accusation that Singh was arrested in 1988; that Singh changed his name to Rick for “nefarious purposes”; that a judgment was stated against Singh in 1993; and that there was a court order to pay a judgment against Singh, all of which Singh firmly denies. Attorney Belvin Perry said the main intent of the lawsuit is to deter individuals from using negative campaign mailers and TV commercials to taint candidates’ reputations. Attorney Frank Kruppenbacher said the suit is the first of its kind in Florida and is necessary to fight against what he perceives as a threat to democracy. “One, the emotional damage done to his family and himself was inexcusable,” Kruppenbacher said. “But two, the efforts by parties outside of Orange County — these PACs from elsewhere — to pour money into an Orange County election and influence the voters of Orange County, incorrectly, so they could gain control of a political office is something that threatens our democracy and Mr. Singh — he’s not going to stand still for it.” The lawsuit, filed by Singh as a private citizen, will not make use of taxpayer money. Singh declined to name individuals or companies from which he is seeking damages, but Kruppenbacher estimated six will be named in a future amendment. Kruppenbacher said he estimates about $3.4 million was spent to create the campaign against Singh. “You have an astronomical amount of money being poured in, and the citizens of the county should demand to know who’s doing this,” Kruppenbacher said.

Lopes moved to the United States from Brazil eight years ago, and although she doesn’t have a culinary background, she does have a passion for cooking. She taught English in Brazil, but when she moved to America to give her daughter a better opportunity for education, she needed to start working immediately. Getting her degree validated for teaching in Florida was going to be a timely process, so she began working in the Brazilian sandwich industry. A year later, she got a job near the Mall at Millenia as a waitress. There, she made the most of every chance she got to talk to the chefs about their craft. “I was always very curious, and when I was in the kitchen and had the chance to ask questions to the chefs, I learned a lot from the four years I was there,” she said. “That made me more secure, so that when I had the chance to open a business, I wasn’t so lost.” With her passion for cooking and desire to bring a piece of Brazil to Orlando, she opened Mrs. Potato in April 2014 on International Drive, in a small spot next to Twistee Treat. Based on the original Brazilian potato-house style, Mrs. Potato features more than 20 potato-based entrees that can be customized. One of its signature dishes is the rösti potato, a crisp and golden hash brown stuffed with anything ranging from vegetables and cheese to seafood or meat. When the opportunity arose to move to the current location off Kirkman Road in December 2014, things began picking up. That June, Fox 35 featured her restaurant on Good Day Orlando. Then, Mrs. Potato was featured in Orlando Magazine. Brazilian food bloggers and other publications took some interest, as well, and exposure steadily increased. The reviews from Lopes’s regular customers, foodies and the Brazilian community alike built up. A FOOD NETWORK FEATURE

Lopes is the founder and owner of Mrs. Potato, a Brazilian-inspired restaurant that specializes in both baked and rösti potatoes. Everything on the menu is potatobased, and there is something on the menu to fit various tastes. “Potatoes go with everything, and that’s what we do,” Lopes said. “I don’t know many people who don’t like potatoes.”

After three years in business, one of her wildest dreams came true, and unexpectedly. Producers of the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” hosted by restaurateur Guy Fieri, sent an email notifying Lopes the crew was coming to Orlando. They were considering Mrs. Potato as one of the featured restaurants, thanks to input and good reviews from customers.

“I read and read and read it again, and I just couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I got out of my office with tears in my eyes. It was such an honor just to be considered. I’d been in business for not even three years at the time, and not having any culinary background, you always question if you’re doing the right thing or if this is what you’re meant to do.” After an extensive interview and inspection process, the material goes to the producers and Fieri himself, who make the final decisions. Two weeks later, Lopes learned Mrs. Potato made the cut. Over the course of two days and more than 20 hours of footage, Guy Fieri and his crew spent time with Lopes, cooking and joking and offering tips of the trade. He was joined by two guests: N*SYNC’s Joey Fatone and Planet Hollywood CEO Robert Earl. “All four of us were in the kitchen cooking,” Lopes said. “He was just that same character he is on TV — making jokes, tasting my food before I finished. What really surprised me is he is an extremely generous person — he would look at something and give me tips. He knows so much more than I do about food. I was more expecting this, ‘I’m famous, I’m Guy Fieri, I’m doing a favor for your restaurant.’ attitude. It wasn’t that way at all. “I heard from them, ‘We’re doing this for you,’ many times, and that really, really amazed me,” Lopes said. “It’s their show, but they know how important they are for a small business and how life-changing that is in terms of business. He was so generous and made me feel so comfortable. They really took into consideration what I wanted, because they knew it was my baby and they respected that. That was fantastic.” When Mrs. Potato is featured on the May 12 episode of “Triple D,” it’s likely that business will pick up. But the ambiance and feeling of the family-style restaurant won’t change at all. “I always try to be here and talk to my customers; I pretty much know my regulars by name,” Lopes said. “That relationship is very important, and I’ll never change being that way. We’re a family restaurant, and that’s how I like to be known. “I don’t know what to expect from the show airing,” she added. “This is what I worked for, and then actually accomplishing it? I’m having a hard time processing it. For me, it’s like winning the Oscars of the restaurant industry.” Contact Danielle Hendrix at dhendrix@orangeobserver.com.

two schools: Windermere High School and Timber Springs Middle School,” said Lauren Roth, an OCPS spokeswoman. “The new ordinance gives the School Board more flexibility to build on sites that are appropriate for schools.” After spending more than a year tweaking the original ordinance, which was adopted in 1996, the district and county decided on new standards to guide the construction of new schools and renovation of existing schools. One of the biggest changes involves the applicability of the outlined standards. Although the original version was limited to traditional public schools, which differ from public charter schools, the revised version applies to both. Another significant change pertains to where high schools are permitted to be built. According to the amended version, new high schools are not to be located in rural settlements. However, as this was not the case before, a disagreement arose between the county and OCPS, which purchased land for Windermere High School within a rural settlement. “In the case of Windermere High School, it is located inside a rural settlement, and the new ordinance prevents the construction of high schools within rural settlements,” Roth said. “So that won’t happen again. And that also means that the School Board won’t buy acreage for a high

school inside rural settlements, because it’ll be clearly outlined.” However, the most substantial adjustments to the ordinance address the minimum acreage requirements for school sites. The minimum acreage for an elementary school with a capacity of 550 students was reduced from an original 15 acres to seven acres, nine acres for schools with a capacity of 650 students, and 10 acres for a school with a capacity of 830 students. However, if the elementary school, regardless of capacity, is located in a rural service area, the minimum is 11 acres. “The most important thing, for us, is that there is more flexibility on the site sizes,” Roth said. “We don’t necessarily need 65 acres for a high school, and that was in the old siting ordinance.” Free-standing ninth-grade centers, middle and K-8 schools’ minimum site acreages also were decreased, from 25 acres to 12 acres for a school with a 650-student capacity, or 16 acres if located in a rural service area. High schools were reduced from 65 to 40 acres, or 50 acres, if located in a rural service area. Moreover, according to section 38-1754 in the revised ordinance, the School Board will now need to send community meeting notices to property owners within 1,500 feet of a proposed school — a radius that was expanded from an original 300 feet. The legacy of Nancy Sell-Dane Holy Family Catholic School will honor the memory of art teacher Nancy Sell-Dane with their spring musical.

on’t say that you can’t, Nancy Sell-Dane always told her students. The mantra still echoes in the hallways at Holy Family Catholic School even though Sell-Dane is no longer there. It’s just a piece of the legacy she left behind after her sudden death Dec. 26, 2016. “She truly was a beautiful person,” said Sister Dorothy Sayers, principal of Holy Family Catholic School. “She was a gift to the school and to her students.” As a tribute to Sell-Dane’s life, the school is dedicating this year’s spring musical in her honor.

7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at West Orange High School, 1625 Beulah Road, Winter Garden. This is the final show of the year for the school’s theater department and will star retiring theater department director Ken Rush as Tevye. Tickets cost $12 for general admission, $15 for reserved tickets and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased by calling (407) 905-2400, Ext. 6162462, or online at bit.ly/2p0STc5.

SELL-DANE’S LEGACY

After a successful career in the corporate world, Sell-Dane decided to try her hand at teaching and joined the staff at Holy Family Catholic School shortly after the school opened in 1996. Little did she know just how much she would come to love her students. “She was one of those teachers who gave her all and more,” said Tim Conyers, the music director at the school. Sell-Dane was known for coming in on the weekends, during holidays, over spring break and during the summer months to put in extra hours for her students and the school’s projects. “She was very joyful and encouraged us to never stop SEE LEGACY PAGE 8

the future. The Lord will take care of you along the way, and when it’s over, the Lord will bring you home.” “A NIGHT ON BROADWAY”

When the school initially began planning its spring musical, the goal was to make it a celebration of the school’s 20th anniversary. “When we started out, we said we wanted to do a Broadway review,” Conyers said, who is directing the production. “We had so many auditions that we decided to do a major production.” The show will feature more than 100 students and songs from several Broadway productions, including “The Sound of Music,” “42nd Street,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King” and “Annie.” “I don’t think this has ever been done before,” Conyers said. “It’s very, very unique. I don’t think there’s a school in Florida that’s tried to put on a show like this with the gamut of shows that we’re doing.” After Sell-Dane’s death halfway through the school year, the school decided to frame the show as a tribute to her memory. Students have been rehearsing for months in preparation for the show.

“It’s been fun,” Jusas said. “It’s like a huge medley of different shows.” Sixth-graders Sophia Senior and Orlando have visited businesses around town to put up posters advertising the upcoming musical, and the community response, especially in light of Sell-Dane’s death, has been positive. “It hasn’t been as much sad as it has been celebrating her life,” Conyers said. Each performance also will include a short video to pay tribute to Sell-Dane and her work at the school. “It will be a real nice evening for everybody,” Sayers said. “We want to celebrate her life.” Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

doing art,” sixth-grader Madeline Orlando said. Sell-Dane was a creative mastermind, Conyers said, because she not only taught art classes but also created the sets for school plays. “She was a really integral part of the art and sets for many shows over the years,” he said. From giant teapots to a walkthrough forest, Sell-Dane always created beautiful and elaborate set designs. And she taught every student who attended Holy Family Catholic School. “She made an impact on everyone,” said Hayleigh Jusas, an eighth-grader at the school. Although she was known for her artistic skills, her students also remember her for her jokes. “She was always able to add humor to stuff,” said eighthgrader Dia Sorrentino. Just before Christmas break, Sell-Dane told her students that they had completed her life. “This was her home, her family,” Conyers said. A mural has been painted on one of the school walls as a memorial to Sell-Dane’s memory. It includes scenes from various plays, horses, symbols of Sell-Dane’s faith and a quote from Sell-Dane that reads, “One day at a time do the Lord’s will as best you can without knowing

METROWEST The new relief school for MetroWest Elementary is quickly nearing completion, and the Orange County School Board announced the new name chosen for the school: Westpointe Elementary. Westpointe, which was the more popular choice among the other options — Lake Vilma and MetroEast — will be constructed on the same site as MetroWest and have a student capacity of about 850 students, said Orange County Public Schools spokeswoman Lauren Roth. The relief school is needed for MetroWest Elementary because, with 1,614 students currently enrolled, it is more than 300 students over capacity. The new relief school, slated to open Aug. 14, will bring the capacity for both schools to a total of 1,694. The project, which includes the construction of Westpointe Elementary and renovations to MetroWest Elementary, has a combined 25 acres. Roth said the new MetroWest Elementary bus loop, pick-up/drop-off loop and staff parking are complete, as well as the new MetroWest Elementary Building 5 media center, which is already in use. Roth also added that Westpointe’s entry driveway and bus loop have been completed, and the new classroom/administration/dining Building 100 for Westpointe Elementary is nearing completion. The work that remains to be completed includes some renovations, the Westpointe staff parking, the MetroWest Elemen-

INDEPENDENCE REZONING

During the April 25 meeting, School Board members also approved technical and targeted area rezonings for several elementary, middle and public schools. Among the authorized rezonings was a technical rezoning involving Independence, Bay Lake and Sunset Park elementary schools. A technical rezoning essentially moves land from one school’s zone to another school zone. Technical rezonings do not affect students, because they are conducted to account for projected population growth on currently vacant land that may or may not see residential development. The purpose of such zonings,

Roth said, is to ensure that if or when the development is initiated and more students come in, they will be zoned to a school that either has space for them or has a relief school planned in the near future. The latter was the case for the technical rezoning approved by board members on April 25, which zoned land previously belonging to both the Bay Lake and Sunset Park Elementary School to Independence Elementary School. “We did this to move any future growth to Independence (Elementary School), which will be relieved in the future,” School Enrollment Director Carol McGowin said. Independence Elementary, which has a program capacity of 786 students, currently has 816 students enrolled. Contact Gabby Baquero at Gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

WPS girls tennis finishes as state runner-up Windermere Prep’s Lady Lakers made it to the state championship match for a second consecutive season. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

For a second consecutive season, the girls tennis team at Windermere Prep finished its season as the state runner-up in Class 1A at the FHSAA Championships in Seminole County last week. The Lady Lakers, who first

defeated The First Academy and Trinity Prep in the regional playoffs to make it to state, bested Pensacola Catholic in the state quarterfinals and Jacksonville Episcopal in the state semifinals before falling to St. Andrew’s 4-1 in the state championship match April 25 — the same squad that had defeated Windermere Prep

for the title a year ago. Nevertheless, it was a thrilling experience for the Lady Lakers to make it all the way to the final match of the season once again. “We were really thrilled to get to the finals — I think it was a testament to our team spirit and how much we supported each other,” head coach Mandy Rosenfield said. “(St. Andrew’s was) incredibly good — they were good on every line. We gave it our best, and we really achieved.”

Rosenfield expressed pride in each of her athletes on the state team, noting that everyone — from Line One to Line Five in singles and both doubles teams — had played a big role in the team’s advancing as far as it did. “Everyone, really, at some point pulled out a great win when perhaps they shouldn’t have,” Rosenfield said. When I found out that DP had a flag football team, my parents were like, ‘Yeah, you have to try out for that.’ My family are super big football people. My brother plays. We watch it every Sunday. So, I’ve grown up with it. What’s your favorite part of the game? I love the team and how close we are. I also love scoring and moving the ball up and down the field.

What is your favorite football team? Washington Redskins. But my favorite player is Odell Beckham Jr. from the Giants. Courtesy photo

What are you most excited for about college? The freedom and the new town.

The Windermere Prep girls tennis team is all smiles with the state runner-up trophy at last week’s FHSAA Tennis Championships in Seminole County. Team members include Fabienne Harder, left, Morgan DeLattre, Hannah McGee, Madeleine Geller, Zoe Rosenfield and Paula Stiegler.

What are the biggest challenges you face on the field? Definitely throwing the ball with rushers coming at you. You have limited time to throw it down the field. And trying to find an open receiver in all the traffic.

For senior Ukeyvia Beckwith, the lone state qualifier from 2016, it is exciting to have enough athletes making the trip this weekend to give the Olympia girls team a chance to place toward the top. “We’re all super excited, because this is our first year where we have so many girls going to state that we have a chance to win,” Beckwith said. For head coach Jason Greer, the large leap from one state qualifier to eight has more to do

Titans vie for individual medals

With an undefeated season, how do you keep the momentum going? Each one of us has different skills that we bring to the game. If we each use those skills, that’s how we get 30 or 40 to 0. What was one of the biggest highlights of the season so far? Beating Harmony. It was 13-12. They’re our rivals. I was relieved and super happy that our defense could pull through in the last minute.

the only local team to make it to state. Later in the week, on April 26, the Olympia boys tennis team was defeated by Tampa’s George Steinbrenner High in the Class 4A State Quarterfinals. The Titans previously defeated Dr. Phillips in the regional championship April 20 to make it to state.

with what’s above the shoulders than below. “Last year, we had the same personnel, so I think the difference was the kids buying into the concept of being able to be successful,” Greer said. “It’s just them believing that they can do it — the writing was on the wall last year.” The Lady Titans are looking to match — or best — their previous top result as a team at state — a fifth-place finish in 2013, the same year the boys team won it all. Beckwith will compete as an individual in the high jump and the 400 meters, as well as on the 4x400 relay team. Her best chance to win an individual state championship will come in the high jump — in which she won a regional championship — but she said she is planning on taking the state meet in stride to maximize performance for herself and her team. “I’m trying to take things one at a time,” Beckwith said. “I know that I need to take advan-

tage of every opportunity that I have.” Senior Kenya Dillon is ranked as the top hurdler in the state in the 100-meter hurdles. “If (Dillon) puts together what she is supposed to do … I think she is going to be a state champion,” Greer said. Dacia Williams, a fellow senior, is seeking a medal in the triple jump after placing second at regionals, and fellow seniors Anjelie Tirone and Taylor Champer hope to contribute on relay teams. The Titans boys aren’t to be forgotten, either, with the Olympia 4x400 meter relay team — Chris Sipp, Brendon Sims, Iverson Darius and Andrew Wilkins — eyeing a medal after finishing as runnerup at regionals. Foundation, Jones High work together for Senior Night save

T

he following is a small example of what is cool about high-school sports. The story starts with a call from the Jones High athletic director to David Baginski, the athletic director for Foundation Academy, the morning of April 18. The Foundation softball team was to host the Jones High Lady Tigers on its Senior Night that evening. Unfortunately, a wave of injuries had brought the Lady Tigers’ numbers down to just seven available players — short of the number needed to play a regulation game. The two programs have a budding relationship, having scheduled games against one another the past few seasons, so Baginski asked for a favor. Instead of canceling the game — and the Senior Night festivities for the Lady Lions — perhaps Foundation could instead

You may have seen the name Nate Marrero in this paper before. He is a senior at Ocoee High who has an interest in becoming a sports journalist. For the past two years, he has received some realworld work experience by helping out our newspapers here in Orange County, usually covering Ocoee games I could not attend. In addition to that, he has his own personal blog which he uses to regularly cover sports at Ocoee High, and he also operates the Twitter account for the Knights baseball team. In short, he’s a go-getter, creating opportunities for valuable experience and loyally producing recaps and galleries his classmates look forward to reading. When the Ocoee High baseball team had its Senior Night game April 27 against Celebration, it was to Nate’s great surprise that there was one additional number painted on the field to recognize the program’s seniors: it was the No. 1, and it was for him. Kudos to head coach Bobby Brewer and his staff for choosing to recognize Nate along with the program’s other seniors. As important as it is to recognize the athletes on the field for their hard work, it’s pretty cool to see some recognition for the team’s loyal beat writer off of it.

ple of the school’s students handling a little bit of adversity in a positive manner. “They chose to step up and make the best of it and really pull out a really fun night,” Baginski said. “(Senior Night is part of) the high-school experience … we want to make sure that we’re doing our best to give them the experience that every kid deserves to have. Now, they can look back on it and have pictures and memories of it.” The Lady Lions’ season ended last week in their district tournament, but for the team’s five seniors, they always will have their memory of the time they played Jones High in a roaring game of kickball.

enthusiastic affirmation, and that’s just what happened. A couple girls for Foundation joined the Jones side, and the two teams played a game of kickball. Before the game, the five seniors for Foundation got their Senior Night ceremony. And, to top it all off, the girls for both teams had fun — and made some new friends. “It was cool,” Ames said. “At the end of the game they were exchanging Twitter and other social networking … they made some friends out of it. They’re five great kids. They were just happy to be able to do something.” For Baginski, not only was it a win for the girls to have been able to have had their senior night, but also it was an exam-

lend some of its girls to the Jones team so they could get the game in, even if it would not be an official game. You see, of the five seniors on the Foundation softball team, a few also had played for the school’s soccer team. That Senior Night had been canceled, and the girls had to have their ceremony before the start of a boys soccer game. So, with that in mind, Baginski and softball head coach Randy Ames were determined to try and make the game happen. The athletic director from Jones High agreed, and so the seven girls from Jones and their coaches arrived that afternoon for a ballgame. Upon arrival, though, the umpire crew that was to call the game let the coaches know that it wasn’t so much that they wouldn’t call an unofficial game — but that they couldn’t. On top of that, of the girls Jones had lost to injury, their pitcher was among them. Having an inexperienced pitcher on the mound without an umpire to call balls and strikes could be a dicey proposition, but that’s when Ames had a lightbulb go off in his head: They needed to play a game, but maybe it didn’t have to be softball. Ames gathered his seniors together and laid out a proposition: How about we play kickball? The response was an

nce Andy and Colleen Williams’s solarpanel system is given the green light to be switched on, they will have the first house in Windermere — and one of about 50 in the entire metro Orlando area — running on solar power. The longtime Windermere residents currently live in a house on Lake Down; in fact, it’s Andy’s childhood home. But the discussion about going solar has been ongoing since they were in their previous house. “Our daughter is 8 years old, so when she was born, it was like, ‘How do we change the carbon footprint in the world?’” Colleen Williams said. “Solar panels are something we always wanted to do. It’s important that she have a life, her kids have a life and that they have the resources we had.” GOING SOLAR

The Williams family shows off its new solar panels with SolarCity representative Scott Smith. From left: Smith, Colleen Williams, Loren Williams and Andy Williams.

Andy Williams owns Lakeside Realty in Windermere, and he originally heard that Tesla-backed solar-power company SolarCity was coming to the Orlando and Windermere areas through a friend. One of his agents is good friends with Scott Smith, the Williams’s SolarCity representative. Upon expressing interest in solar power and talking with Smith about it in January, the Williamses knew they wanted to move forward with the process. The family has gone through the consultation and installation processes and now have 62 solar panels installed on their roof. All that’s left to do is wait on paperwork to process with Duke Energy, allowing them to switch the system on. SolarCity is the largest distributor and manufacturer of solar panels in the country, Smith said, with nearly 400,000 installations thus far and growing. With the recent amendments nationwide regarding solar power, Smith said, the interest and desire to get on board with it is growing. “SolarCity has been in operation for 10 years now and was SEE SOLAR PAGE 20

Solar panels convert the sun’s energy into electricity using silicon-based solar cells. The sun’s radiation strikes the cells, causing a chemical reaction that releases electrons. This generates electric current. A control device converts the current into usable electricity, enabling it to power electric items. The electricity passes through a breaker box to outlets in the building, and you can then plug in and power electric items.

This then offsets the energy used at night. “We will produce more electricity all day long than we use, and then we use our credits back at night,” Andy Williams said. “Hopefully, we’re going to produce 105% to 110% of our need, so there will be an overage.”

purchased by Tesla in November,” Smith said. “(CEO) Elon Musk’s goal is to reduce emission in the world by 60% (by the time he dies).” SolarCity has 315-watt photovoltaic panels that convert the sun’s radiation into usable electricity via the use of solar cells. These small, square-shaped panel semiconductors are typically made from silicon and other conductive materials. When sunlight strikes a solar cell, chemical reactions release electrons, generating electric current. The goal of running on solar power not only is to reduce carbon footprint and contribute to the green movement of being environmentally conscious. Its aim also is to get to the point where solar-panel users essentially have no electric bills. Rather, the amount they pay to use their solar panels is competitive with utility companies’ charges. And according to SolarCity, the average solar system will offset 178 tons of carbon dioxide in 30 years. The Williams family will still technically be “on the grid” — the home still will be connected to Duke Energy’s grid. It is actually illegal to go completely off the grid, Smith said, and the family still will need electricity at night. But, the Williams’ solar panels will generate so much power on a
