Pine’s legacy lives on “It’s truly an honor for the community to honor my husband in this aspect; knowing that his legacy will live on through other things is awesome.” — Bridget Pine
Orange County officials broke ground on the $9.7 million Deputy Scott Pine Community Park in Horizon West. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER
It’s been three years since the death of Orange County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Pine, and a community park bearing his name will help ensure that his memory lives on. On Wednesday, May 10, county officials broke ground on what will become Deputy Scott Pine Community Park in Horizon West as community members and the Pine family remembered his legacy. Located at 17199 Ficquette Road, the $9.7 million park will have two multi-purpose fields on 19-and-one-half acres. Orange County and Orange County Public Schools will share the park. One field will become a soccer field, and the other will serve as the off-site football stadium for Windermere High School. “This is going to be a great park and a great opportunity for our citizens to come together,” said
HORIZON WEST
Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs. “We’ll never forget his (Scott’s) genuine passion for public service and his passion for helping others. This park will be a tribute to his life. It will serve as a place of gratitude, a place where kids can play and families can gather, a place where his heroic story and his memory will live on, inspiring generations to come.” Pine was killed while on duty Feb. 11, 2014, as he was pursuing a suspected car burglar on foot in the Westminster Landing subdivision in West Orange County. The pursuit ended in the suspect, Benjamin Holtermann, fatally shooting him. Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey told the crowd at the groundbreaking that the county’s ultimate goal was not only to make sure that the area has a quality recreational facility but also to acknowledge Scott Pine’s sacrifice. “It’s not just a name on a monument; you can see how Scott lives on in his children here today,” Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said. “There will be children in his park who will be dancing and playing for years to come. While he has passed on, he really lives in these children who are his and the other children who will be here at the park.”
OCPS is funding $3.7 million of the project, while another $3.7 million is funded by INVEST in Our Home for Life dollars, the $300-million initiative launched by Jacobs in 2015. “It’s truly an honor for the community to honor my husband in this aspect; knowing that his legacy will live on through other things is awesome,” said Scott’s widow, Bridget Pine. “It’s amazing that my children and so many others will be able to enjoy a recreational park that has my husband’s name on it.” Jacobs added that Pine and other law-enforcement officers across the community risk their lives every day, and his legacy will live on for generations to come. “Most importantly, it will be a permanent reminder to our our citizens in the future and visitors that come here of his dedication, service and life commitment to our citizens and how fortunate we are to have men in this country like Deputy Scott Pine who will risk their lives and, if needed, give their lives for each of us,” Jacobs said. Deputy Scott Pine Community Park is expected to be completed in early 2018. Contact Danielle Hendrix at dhendrix@orangeobserver.com.

In the May 19 edition of the West Orange Times and West Orange Times & Observer, a headline incorrectly identified Christy Gorberg as the new principal at SunRidge Middle School. She is the principal at SunRidge Elementary School. We regret the error.
“I have been under their care, along with my 4 kids and my husband for over 8 years. I have used chiropractic care in the past and Dr. Jen & Dr. Angie are by far the best! When I started coming, I had a bad hip & could barely walk, they were able to treat that and anything else that had come up. My kids also benefit from getting adjusted & they love it.” - Melinda H.

County officials and the Pine family were excited to break ground on Deputy Scott Pine Community Park.
WINTER GARDEN Two West Orange High School students were hospitalized Friday, May 12, after school officials said they ingested gummy bears that might have been laced with an illegal substance. Orange County S h e r i f f ’s Office deputies responded to the school at about 9:39 a.m. after receiving the call for medical assistance and said the students were taken to Florida Hospital Winter Garden to receive treatment. In a phone call to parents, West Orange High Principal Bill Floyd said the gummy bears might have been laced with an illegal substance and the school is working with law enforcement to investigate the situation. “We are working with law enforcement in an investigation and appropriate discipline will be administered according to the student code of conduct,” Floyd said in the call. “As always, the safety and security of our students is our utmost priority, and you can assist by speaking with your child about making wise choices and reporting anything that may seem unusual or amiss to school authorities.” Details on the students’ conditions have not been released, although OCSO authorities say they appear to be non-life-threatening.

IDEAS FOR EAST PLANT DISTRICT n A variety of building types will be encouraged in this area. House-form buildings with commercial uses remain appropriate. n Special streetscape standards are required for Plant Street. n Access driveways should be minimized along public streets, particularly Plant Street, to maintain a safe pedestrian environment. n Trail extension will be provided along south side of Plant Street to Ninth Street. n Residential in a more urban streetfront organization, with opportunity for ground floor retail on Plant Street. Public spaces and parks would be created as an amenity for the neighborhood. n Relaxed building frontage standards in this portion of district because of shallow parcel depths. Parking may be located on the sides of a building and screened from Plant Street sidewalk/trail by kneewall. IDEAS FOR PACKING PLANT DISTRICT n Access driveways should be minimized along public streets to maintain a safe pedestrian environment. n Repurpose existing industrial buildings for flex space. n Public spaces and parks create an amenity for neighborhood. n Complementary mix of residential, commercial and nextgeneration industrial. n Provide flexibility in standards for industrial building types.

The framework will establish building standards for any future growth in the corridor situated between South Dillard Street and State Road 429, essentially expanding its downtown and creating a gradual transition that reflects downtown’s character. The city’s Character Area Plans were drafted to ensure future developers and property managers understand the overall vision targeted for the corridor. Some goals for the character area according to the proposed ordinance — for which a vote was postponed during the meeting — are to create a more pedestrian-friendly transportation network, a stronger sense of place and a front-door gateway to Winter Garden and Ocoee’s downtown areas; and to encourage high-quality and highvalue economic development. The character area establishes three overlay zoning districts: the East Plant District, Gateway District and Packing Plant District, each of which have its own development standards that align with a desired character. There are eight building types permitted within the character area. Each has a maximum story limitation, schematic example, regulations and required standards. However, the city may grant exceptions via allowable waivers, according to the plan documents. The ordinance also states the city recognizes the constraints of meeting some standards for certain projects and may approve required deviations. Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com

community in 2007. A decade later, the Horizon West community continues to grow at an exponential rate — and so has Bridgewater Middle. According to OCPS enrollment statistics, the school’s capacity is 1,040 students. As of May 2017, the student population has reached 1,918. For the 2017-18 school year, student enrollment is projected to reach 2,100. By the time the relief school is slated to open in 2019, OCPS statistics show, projected enrollment would hit 2,642. The $37.8 million relief school — currently known as site 37-MSW-4 — will be situated on 25-and-one-half acres, west of Winter Garden Vineland Road and south of the Ashlin Park subdivision in Horizon West’s Lakeside Village area. It is set to have a capacity of 1,215 students. Current plans show that the campus will include classrooms, labs, art and music rooms, a kitchen and cafeteria, administration building, covered walkways, dining and multi-purpose rooms, a media center and a gym. The relief school should be completed by May 2019 and would open its doors to students in time for the 2019-20 school year. Officers who conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle immediately noticed three packages of meat situated between two child carseats. The suspected thief had a prior theft conviction and was arrested. APRIL 30

13690 block of West Colonial Drive. While on patrol at about 3 a.m., an officer noticed a vehicle filled with cases of beer and miscellaneous items thrown into the bed of the truck. The officer found it odd and conducted a traffic stop. The driver informed the officer he worked for a delivery company and his boss sent him out on a job assignment. The vehicle passenger stated he was helping the driver by accompanying him. The officer noticed the driver was nervous and learned from dispatch that he had an active warrant out of Orange County for nonpayment of child support and was a habitual traffic violator. The passenger said the car was filled with beer and alcohol after the driver stopped by a convenience store. The officer found a backpack on the passenger floor board containing a pair of bolt cutters, a black ski mask with a mouth hole, a pipe containing meth residue and a
jacket. A back-up officer found a container in the center console containing hash. Both vehicle occupants were placed under arrest. OCOEE APRIL 24
East Silver Star Road. At about midnight, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a car because its tag light was out. After being provided with the driver’s information, the officer asked if there were any guns, drugs or knives in the car. The driver advised there was not, but the officer noticed a small pocket knife in the driver’s pocket. The driver also displayed a sluggish demeanor. The officer requested a backup K-9 unit. The vehicle was searched, and officers discovered two large knives in the front passenger door, heroin in a small bunched-up piece of paper, a stolen gun underneath the passenger seat, a 50-round box of .25 caliber ammunition, various needles and a backpack in the trunk containing more drug paraphernalia. Both occupants were arrested. APRIL 26
1100 block of Wurst Road. An Ocoee officer was responding to a call about a hit-and-run involving damage of a mailbox when he received another call about a second crash nearby. He diverted his attention to the second crash. The driver still was located within the vehicle but was uninjured. The male driver was unable to answer without slurring his speech. An officer who responded to the hit-and-run call then arrived, in possession of debris located at the scene where a mailbox was hit. The pieces matched the missing parts of the driver’s vehicle. The driver was arrested.

WINTER GARDEN
fter relocating to the Winter Garden area for her husband’s work, Karen McGowan knew she needed to bring her art studio with her. Having previously owned and operated an art studio in Louisiana, McGowan opened her new studio, Creative U, in Winter Garden. “I knew this was a very familyoriented area and knew people from this area,” McGowan said. “It’s such a hometown feel in a metropolis.” INSTANT GRATIFICATION
McGowan can’t remember a time when art wasn’t a major part of her life. “I’ve been doing art my entire life — ever since I could pick up a pencil,” she said. In school, she studied every kind of medium possible — from metalworking to painting. Now, she primarily creates textured paintings. Her specialties are painting oysters and the sound wave of a heartbeat. “I do quick drawing things,” she said. “I’m an instant-gratification artist. If I can’t start and
finish it in the same day, I won’t do it.” She got her start working with children as a preschool art teacher in Louisiana. But after several years of teaching at a school, she decided to break out on her own. She opened her first art studio in Louisiana that featured art lessons and camps but also was known to host painting parties. “It’s crazy but fun,” she said of her studio. After moving to Florida, she began searching for a place to open her studio and found a location off Stoneybrook West Parkway. The location used to house a gym, but after a few coats of paint on the walls and a few days of moving in her art supplies, the space transformed into a bright, open art studio. McGowan officially opened her doors four weeks ago and currently is working to fill her summer camps. So far, she said she has received positive feedback from the community. DREAM SPOT
Because she most often works with children, McGowan created her own two-year curriculum for students taking her classes or SEE CREATIVE PAGE 11

WINTER GARDEN While on an annual trip with some girl friends, Jennifer Moffitt stumbled upon a Philanthropy Fashion store and instantly fell in love. “I literally stopped in my tracks and said to my friends we had to go in,” Moffitt said. “I was drawn in by the windows and once inside, I was immediately captivated by charm and uniqueness of the store. Little did I know my heart was already beginning to grab onto what this company stood for and represented.” Now, Moffitt is preparing to open a franchise of her own in downtown Winter Garden. Located at 49 S. Main St., Philanthropy Fashion is filling the vacant space left by the Winter Garden Feed Company after it moved to its new location on West Colonial Drive earlier this year. A Winter Garden resident of six years, Moffitt said that bringing a Philanthropy Fashion store to the town is a dream come true. “We love the area and have really enjoyed downtown, in particular,” Moffitt said. “When we began looking for a location in the Orlando area, it didn’t take very long for us to realize there was no other place we’d rather be than right in the heart of downtown Winter Garden. We love the charm and the relaxed approachable feeling down here.” But the old building needed sev-

eral updates to turn it into a store. For the last several weeks, Moffitt said she and her family have been hard at work laying flooring and painting the walls all while preserving the historic charm of the building. “We especially love being part of restoration and have a great appreciation for history within a city,” Moffitt said. “It is very exciting for us to be part of what is happening in this area and also bring a historic building back to life in the process.” Philanthropy Fashion sells a variety of women’s clothing, jewelry, accessories and home decor, but the entire mission of the organization is to donate a portion of the sales to charity. Since the company was founded in 2007, it already has donated more than $813,000 to charity. Moffitt said 10% of all sales from her franchise will go to charity. The exception to this rule is the Wearable Compassion line. All proceeds from Wearable Compassion sales will be donated to charity. “The mission of Philanthropy is to demonstrate the love of Christ through prayer and generosity,” Moffitt said. “The idea of giving back, partnering with others in our community to meet needs, as well as ministering to women who come into the store, is something that really excites us.” The store is scheduled to open in early June, and Moffitt said she and her family are excited to
see how the store will fit into the Winter Garden community. “We have been very blessed by the amount of people who have shared their excitement with us and anxiously wait for our doors to open,” Moffitt said. “We have been thrilled to have many business owners in the area come and welcome us and tell us that they are excited we’re coming to the area. It’s been awesome for us to hear the excitement building as we get closer to our opening.” Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

participating in camps. Her curriculum is all about learning while having fun, she said. “It’s about giving students young and old an artistic environment, a creative environment and a bully-free environment where they can be the art weirdos that we all are,” she said. Although she tries to teach her students a variety of media, there are always some things that are more popular than others — such as Sharpies and paints. “Everyone loves a canvass,” McGowan said. McGowan knows each child has a unique perspective and artistic flair, and she encourages them to explore their creative side — even if that means painting the sky purple. “They work in different styles, so I try to help them find what works for them,” she said. Dozens of paintings hang on the walls of her studio. Each one

is an example of what clients can choose to paint during a lesson or party — from religious scenes to animals. McGowan is the main instructor at the studio, but she also has two on-call instructors who can lend a hand if she has a class with more than a dozen students. Generally, she tries to keep her classes small, with no more than 30 students in a class. An added bonus to doing art is the therapeutic benefits it can provide someone, McGowan said. “It’s such a good therapy,” she said. “I am just an artist, not a therapist, but I know it’s good therapy. That’s why coloring books (with adults) are so big.” So far, the studio already has gotten more attention from the community than McGowan expected, so she’s hoping her studio will turn into a success. “This is the perfect place,” McGowan said. “It was my dream spot without me knowing it’s my dream spot.”

ootball has been a part of Nate Ozdemir’s everyday life for what has felt like forever. Ozdemir, who turns 22 this month, has had a career packed with highlights spanning his time at West Orange High and Florida Atlantic University. Among them: intercepting Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya last September — his first interception; earning a scholarship after starting his career as an Owl as a walkon; and a memorable 16-tackle game against Marshall last October. He has started at middle linebacker for the Owls the past two seasons while also heavily involved on the team’s special teams units. He also was named a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy — an award given to the most outstanding college football player in the nation who began his career as a walk-on. Ozdemir has even had his name tossed around as a possible NFL prospect. But Ozdemir, who graduated from West Orange in 2013 and would be a redshirt senior for FAU this fall, does not appear headed to SEE EAGER PAGE 14

Bubba Sangster Ocoee High senior Bubba Sangster is set to graduate soon — but not before he helped the Knights’ baseball team make history. On May 2, Sangster hit a home run that gave Ocoee a 3-1 lead over East Ridge in the semifinals of the District 8A-3 Tournament — effectively launching Ocoee into the state playoffs for the first time.
How did it feel to hit that home run? When I was at bat, I was trying to square up the ball and hit one in the gap. I made an adjustment and hit a hard line drive that went out of the ballpark. It felt great, I had a bunch of adrenaline going through my body at that time. East Ridge, we’re really big rivals, so it felt good to get that win. What was going through your mind during your last high-school game? The last game we played in regionals was fun. We fought as hard as we could, and it just wasn’t meant to be, but that’s baseball. It kind of just hit me that that was my last high-school game, but I also know I gave my best to all the other seniors. I have a chance to go play and do bigger things at USF, and I wanted to give my best for everyone. What’s it like playing sports and managing your

diabetes? I’ve gotten used to it. It’s hard, and I would love to do it without being diabetic. I probably check my blood 15 times during a game. What’s next for you? I’m going to USF. I want to be a diabetes educator. I just want to talk to kids that have diabetes, give them tips on how to control it better when they’re out playing sports and tell them about my personal experiences. If they want to tell me theirs, I can help them with theirs too, because I’ve been through it. (Five years from now) I either see myself playing baseball or being a diabetes educator, and if I could be both, that’d be awesome. What sparked your interest in diabetes education? From going to the doctors all my life, they’d tell me things I should and shouldn’t do, but they don’t really know what people go through and how to control it when they’re out playing sports. It’s a lot different than putting numbers in a pump or an insulin shot. — DANIELLE HENDRIX

the NFL. In fact, he announced his decision earlier this spring to forgo his final year of eligibility with the Owls. Eschewing those gridiron dreams, Ozdemir is ready to pursue his lifelong passion. The Winter Garden native is ready to go all-in on a career serving in the United States military, with hopes of specifically becoming a pilot for the U.S. Marines. “Ever since I was little, I’ve had a strong sense of patriotism,” Ozdemir said. “That’s something I’ve always wanted to do — I’ve always wanted to serve. I feel like it’s my duty.” MISSION: ENLIST
Ozdemir will graduate from FAU in December and plans to enlist in January. Although he technically could play his final season with the Owls this fall, his reasoning for not doing so is to best protect his prospects with the Marines. Ozdemir has endured his share of injuries during his playing career, and the pilot program he hopes to become a part of has strict admittance standards. “Every time I would get cleared medically with the Marine Corps, I’d have an injury, and it would set it back six months,” Ozdemir said. “They (his recruiters) pretty much were at the point where they said, ‘Hey, you could possibly get hurt one more time and not even be eligible (to join).’ “So it was six more months of football or possibly having a very rewarding career, and I just didn’t see the risk being worth it, and I decided to make a bigboy decision,” he said. With his football career suddenly behind him, Ozdemir reflects fondly of his time with
the Owls, even as the program endured some rough seasons. “I had an awesome time playing at FAU,” Ozdemir said. “They are doing everything their power to get something rolling. … It’s definitely growing and here in the next 10 years, maybe, it’s really going to be something special.” WOWING AS A WALK-ON
Part of the reason the standout linebacker is so fond of his time at FAU is because of how hard he had to work to get on the field. Ozdemir was awarded a scholarship to Navy out of high school. But after a few weeks of summer drills, he decided to leave the program for personal reasons. He transferred to FAU, where he had to walk on. “I just knew that I would have to out-work everybody else,” Ozedmir recalls. “I just made it my mission to be on everything possible — every special teams (unit), starting on every special teams (unit), going hard on every single drill.” After redshirting as a true freshman in the fall of 2013, Ozdemir gradually worked his way up from second-string linebacker to a starter while also being heavily involved on the Owls’ special teams units. Some of his highlights from his time as a college player led to his name being tossed around as a draft prospect — an accomplishment he never thought possible. Nevertheless, Ozdemir said he still sees the role of football in the bigger picture of his life as preparing him for his next journey. “Football has been a part of my everyday life for as long as I can remember,” Ozdemir said. “Football, I believe, kind of set me up for a military career.” Ozdemir, who has his private

Whatever the road ahead, the former Warrior is buoyed by his deeply held sense of patriotism. “This country gives so much to us and I think, especially today, a lot of people don’t recognize it,” Ozdemir said. “I’m a strong, motivated person. Nate Ozdemir excelled during his time at West Orange from the fall of 2009 to the spring of 2013 as a standout football player and wrestler. Reflecting on his favorite moments on the gridiron for the Warriors, the defensive stalwart recalls the one time he got to carry the ball. It was Ozdemir’s Senior Night during the 2012 season and the Warriors were leading Oak Ridge big. With time winding down, Ozdemir asked then-coach Chip Petree if he could carry the ball. The Warriors plugged him in in a power formation and, on his only play as a ballcarrier, Ozdemir powered down the field for an 85-yard gain — stopped at the 1-yard line. “I think I got in,” Ozdemir recalls with a laugh. “I broke the pylon.”
