The class of champions TROY HERRING SPORTS EDITOR

I

t’s been another wildly strange year for students around Orange County thanks to the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, students in the Class of 2021 have found ways to overcome the difficulties associated with virtual learning, missed events and quarantines. For this year’s seniors at Dr. Phillips, those struggles are over as they graduate following a year filled with accomplishments for the school and its students.

ATHLETIC DOMINATION

Dynasties continued and programs rose to new heights in one of the area’s top athletic departments. On the mat, the girls wrestling team once again went undefeated and found itself at the top of the podium by winning its fifth-consecutive state title. Meanwhile, on the boys team, senior Gerald Greaves capped his high school career by winning the school’s first state title in boys wrestling — his win came in the 285-pound weight class.

OBSERVER | OrangeObserver.com

Along with Greaves’ historymaking moment, senior Zamora St. Cyr not only won a team championship with the girls wrestling team but also went for gold in her weight class to win the school’s first title in weightlifting. “I won’t say I’m not emotional — I am — but I’m very collected when it comes to my emotions, so when it happened and everyone was crying … and everyone wanted a hug, and so out of the blue, I just started tearing up,” St. Cyr told the Observer in February. “It was a good moment.” Less than a month after St. Cyr’s win, the school’s boys basketball team finally was able to bring home its first state championship after beating Dwyer 54-46. “From the beginning of our season, we’ve just been talking about going to states,” junior Denzel Aberdeen told the Observer in March. “We’ve been working hard and pushing each other every day in practice just for this moment here.” OVERCOMING THE OBSTACLES

For many seniors at Dr. Phillips, the school year was when

dreams of post-graduation life came into focus. In the case of senior Gillian Alexander — a talented dancer — that moment happened with a simple phone call from an admissions counselor from the school she had always wanted to attend. “It was the admissions counselor, and he was like, ‘Hi, is this Gillian?’” Alexander told the Observer in April. “And I am so serious, I could not speak, so I sounded like I was crying and laughing at the same time, but I couldn’t compose myself.” In the creative arts realm, Dr. Phillips High School’s theater magnet program was able to perform “The Addams Family: Quarantined Concert Version” — its first show in a year — on Feb. 5 and 6. Despite the performances being live-streamed — with no live audiences permitted — just being able to perform was a godsend, Theater Director Jason Whitehead said. With seniors about to head out on new journeys now, the challenges they faced at Dr. Phillips — whether in the class or in dealing with COVID-19 — will prepare them for the difficulties of the real world.

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I would like to take this opportunity to say congratulations to the Class of 2021! While your senior year has been unique, challenging and, most certainly, unforgettable, you have demonstrated and upheld the Panther Motto throughout, “Never Less Than The Best!” I hope that collectively your years at Dr. Phillips have provided you with fun-filled memories that will last a lifetime. As you move into the next chapter of your life, the next adventure and great things continue to happen, take good care of the Dr. Phillips name. You will forever be Panthers of Dr. Phillips High School. I am honored to be your principal. Dr. Suzanne Knight

VALEDICTORIAN’S SPEECH

ANDY RAJKUMAR Hello, fellow graduates of 2021! I am delightfully honored to congratulate our class for pushing through what seems like an incredibly long four years. But we made it! We are finally decked out in our caps and gowns, ready to walk across the stage to close this transformative chapter of our lives and open so many more. I am grateful for all of the memories with friends and teachers both here at Ocoee High School and Valencia College. Without the continued support of our families, teachers, friends and community, we would not be here today. As we gather with our loved ones, including those virtually, let us celebrate our huge accomplishment. Once again, congratulations to the Class of 2021, and like Ghandi has reminded us every day, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Thank you.

No challenge is too big for us RAIN BELLAMY

I

n a year typically regarded as one of the most memorable in a person’s life, the members of the Class of 2021 were majorly relegated to their — or should I say, our — homes for the duration of our senior year. After having worked so diligently for 13 years (14 for those of us who went to pre-K), being unable to fully enjoy and relish in the culmination of all of our hard work feels like some sort of sick joke. Personally, I had not been able to reconcile with the fact that what were supposed to be my main memories of high school would be riddled with masks and “alternative” versions of big events, and some scrapped entirely (I’m looking at you GradBash). Only recently have I been able to come to terms with the pandemic at hand and be grateful for what we do have, but it would be disingenuous of me to act as though I do not share the feeling of a lack of closure, like many of my peers. Despite our fixations on how disappointing this year was, the Class of 2021 is on the

precipice of our first taste of adulthood and true freedom. This transition is a scary one for most, whether headed off to the armed forces, workforce, college, trade school, etc., we are all being thrust into a different world. But I believe the Class of 2021 is ready. Having the COVID-19 pandemic bring our traditional junior years to an abrupt close, the Class of 2021 was forced to get with the times and go fully virtual. For many, this was a struggle. We were forced to stay up to date with our school work and make decisions

regarding the post-graduation plans in the midst of a global pandemic, social upheaval and anything else life had to offer. Nonetheless, we adjusted, like the chameleons we are. In true Gen Z fashion, there were tips and tricks being spread across the internet to aid those trying to adjust to digital learning, figure out college applications and stay sane during quarantine. The Class of 2021 was able to keep up and, in my opinion, exceed expectations. Our adaptability is what makes us as a class, no strangers to things veering off course — we have

been able to pick up the pieces and create a new track. In hindsight, one may perceive it as naiveté or blind optimism, but there was a faint feeling of hope the virus would run its course through the summer and lead into an average August, where lockdowns and masks would solely be anecdotes to laugh about in the halls. Of course, this was not the case. As new cases of COVID-19 continued to rise, a new school year loomed in the distance — and not just any year, senior year. Much of the Class of 2021 had the question of: “How is this year going to run?” The pandemic being a fact of life at this point, be that as it may, there were still clubs to run, offices to be filled, memories to be made and goals to be achieved for most of the Class of 2021. To say the year went off without a hitch would be a fabrication of events, but we persisted. In the face of an adversary bigger than all of us, the Class of 2021 trudged forward and ensured we got the most out of what this year could give us. In spite of not knowing what each of us

has specifically faced this year, I know that we have all had to overcome some level of hardship to get to this point, and our impending graduations are indicative of the resilience within us all. If I had to endure this year again, I would not be able to find a better group than the Class of 2021. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once wrote, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” The Class of 2021 stood tall and was able to adapt and persist in times where all issues seemed to bigger than ever. In lieu of all that has occurred, I implore all of the Class of 2021 to give themselves a pat on the back and savor these last moments we have together before we go forth in our individual journeys. All our tutelage over the past decade has prepared us for this very moment, and this past year has gifted us with the tools we need to go out and shake up the world — no challenge is too big for us.

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

“If not us, then who? If not now, then when?” Congratulations Class of 2021! It has been my great privilege to serve as your principal. As my first graduating class, you hold a very special place in my heart. While your high school graduation marks the end of an era, it also signals the start of a new beginning, and a bright future ahead. In the face of a global pandemic, your class has not only persevered, but you have triumphed. The Class of 2021 is strong, resilient and never says never. As your class

slogan states, “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?” I encourage each of you to pursue your passions, stay true to yourself, work hard, be kind and go out and change the world! In the words of Steve Jobs, “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” I am so proud of each of you and I cannot wait to see what your future holds. UKnighted We Stand. Go Knights! Dr. Lisa Karcinski

PARTING WORDS There’s nothing I, or anyone, can say to make up for what you lost this year — in what is supposed to be one of the best years of your life. If you’re upset, then you should embrace those feelings. Some people will downplay the situation, because they won’t know what it feels like to have their senior year so limited and uneventful. But, I get it! Like you, I am moving on. Leaving Ocoee High School is not an easy decision for me, especially now when I feel we didn’t get to experience all of those “lasts” — last pep rally, last Homecoming, last class picture, last celebration, etc. However, we have the power to make the most out of this unfor-

tunate situation. If almost three decades of teaching — yes, I am that old — has taught me anything, it’s that people your age are resilient and innovative. Your generation can navigate multiple worlds and bounce between physical and digital spaces with ease. You are part of the most racially and ethnically diverse generation, and you embrace those differences in ways adults seem to struggle. You courageously put yourselves out there for the world to see and criticize. You push boundaries and challenge norms — which can be both bad and good — but you make a difference! You and your classmates have collectively gone through something

together, and though it may not be the perfectly happy memories you previously anticipated, it will be so much more important than that. You’re living through history. Your reaction to this is going to make history. After all, it is still very much your year! Best wishes to each of you on your future endeavors and always remember, “You will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” Thank you for making my “last” year one I will never forget! Wendy Cartwright

VALEDICTORIAN’S SPEECH

LLEYTON ELLIOT

I only have a minute, so I’ll try and say a lot in just a little bit of time. For lack of the time necessary to tell stories or mention names, I’ll summarize by saying this: It has been nothing short of a great honor to learn and grow alongside everybody in this room. I’ve seen firsthand how talented, dedicated and passionate my peers are and how we’ve thrived at Olympia. Adapting well to fit new teachers and administrators, garnering outstanding college acceptance numbers, and having the best sports support section I can imagine are just some of the things that exemplify the spirit of this year’s seniors. No class is perfect, but what’s special about this Class of 2021 is its ability to bring each other up through anything, even certain unexpected and life-changing world events, while staying true to ourselves. Thank you, Olympia, thank you to all the faculty and staff, and thank you, Class of 2021, for making the past four years something for us all to remember. We’ve been given the tools (or maybe we already had them, and we just cultivated them here); let’s go make our mark.

PARTING WORDS Class of 2021. Congratulations on reaching this milestone in your lives. More than any other class that has come through Olympia, you have had to persevere in ways nobody would ever have imagined for a high school student. While most of the country was mourning the moments you lost, you were finding new ways to create memories and make the most of this unique situation. Your teachers have spent four years trying to impart their wisdom — even if you may not have always realized it. Your math teachers have been teaching you to process information and follow the steps to arrive at a solution. Your science teachers have been teaching you to think through problems, find possible solutions, and test your theories. Your social studies teachers have been preparing you to learn from the past and look to the future to make the world a better place. Your English teachers have been providing you with an appreciation for reading and writ-

ing, to search for meaning in everything, and to escape into worlds, both real and fantasy, that you have never seen. Every elective teacher, television production to yearbook and theater to band, has been teaching you that there is a world of options available to you, follow your passion, do not be afraid to try new things, and be yourself! Hopefully, you are leaving Olympia a better student. But more importantly, hopefully you are leaving here a better friend, family member and person. Once you leave here, your grades will no longer matter; they do not define you in any way. Once you walk across that stage and bid your final farewell to Olympia, it is your strength of conviction, your depth of character and your determination that will define who you are. Go into the world and create opportunities, define your own version of success, and make the world better because you are in it. Good luck, Class of 2021! Jamie Benedict

raditionally, seniors always talk about not wanting to go to school, but we did not mean for it to be taken literally this year. With the challenges that the 2020-2021 school year brought forward, we had to adapt to what was known as the “new norm.” Logging into a virtual class meeting, online participants collectively winced after hearing the ringing of shrill feedback, while students at school in-person apply another three squirts of hand sanitizer after entering their classrooms. Divided by proximity and learning modality, the Class of 2021 stood united in our perseverance and grit while approaching the challenges this year provided. Whether it was receiving a phone call to quarantine for 14 days or running to grab a mask from your car, our class had to reinvent our

lifestyles to fit into this new, socially distanced world. Over a year ago, all of our lives and roles as students, teachers, faculty members and individuals changed drastically. From being separated physically, and in some situations emotionally, from our loved ones to taking a hiatus from activities that brought us joy, each individual has, in some way, felt the effects of this year’s events. While put under the stress of college applications to complete, essays to write, résumés to build and academically challenging courses in which to succeed, we additionally endured personal and internal struggles that the COVID-19 pandemic brought about. By having to adjust to the daily standards of logging into online classes and almost always having technical difficulties, at one point many of us lost motivation, and developed a worse-than-usual case of senioritis. Who would have thought that the ringing sound

of people joining a class through Microsoft Teams would become part of teachers’ and students’ nightmares? Despite the barrage of negativity associated with this year, what is often overlooked is the immense growth that transcended the situations. We’ve been impacted not only by the pandemic but also have been touched by the bravery of front-line workers, who have so fiercely fought this virus against all odds by taking action to improve the lives of others during an unforgiving public health crisis. This year’s heroes included our teachers. If it weren’t for our teachers’ support, many students would be lost, both

inside and outside of school. If anything, this year taught the senior class to appreciate what you have now. We developed a deeper gratitude not only for what used to be accessible to us at our leisure and was lost to the pandemic, but for those who fought to provide us the safety to return to an alternative form of normalcy. Additionally, as we live through the largest civil rights movement of many of our lifetimes, we also have found inspiration in those who take action by defending those who face discrimination in their daily lives. Despite the adversities of this pandemic and the accompanying circumstances, students in many cases have learned to

stand up for themselves, protect their community and loved ones, and oppose injustice to facilitate change in the world, which perhaps transcended in recent events more than in any preceding graduating year. In some cases, students converted what they learned from prior years of history classes and writing prompts into visible action and used their voices as the catalyst for advocacy in their communities. Through the loss and confusion, by making it through this year we all have proven our unwavering strength can help us navigate formidable challenges. Whether their first experience this year occurred via a computer screen or through the halls lined with duct tape arrows directing the movement of students, our commonalities stood decisively through our shared experiences that made this year so unique. Although this wasn’t the year any of us expected, and although we were limited in the types of events in which we could participate, this pandemic did not define our last year of high school, nor did it revoke our accomplishments, goals, characters as Olympia Titans.

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I am so proud of the class of 2021! They have truly endured an interesting last year of high school to say the least. I know despite everything, this experience has made them stronger individuals and these Titans will succeed in their future endeavors. Congratulations Titans, Class of 2021! Christy Gorberg

PARTING WORDS As the 2020-2021 school year comes to a close, I am left to think about all that you have dealt with in just one year’s time. When you walked in high school in the fall of 2017, this is not what you expected your Senior Year to look like. You all have not had the Senior Year that was promised to you when you began high school. Senior Year is a sacred year that should be full of fun memories and enjoying your last year before you head off to college or the workforce. Instead, you had the end of your Junior Year taken away from you and then your entire Senior Year; you and your friends were hidden behind masks; and some of you learned virtually all year long. It absolutely amazes me how many times you all have been knocked down and set back. But you haven’t given up on this last year of high school, and you haven’t given up on making the best of every moment. I am filled with hope when I think about your class and the influence you will have on our future. Coronacation and COVID have proven to me that you all can handle anything that is thrown at you with grace and dignity and come out on the other side, better than you were when you went in. It has been my absolute joy and privilege to be around and learn from you all. Go change the world, be kind, be brave, and most of all, know that you will always have a home here at West Orange! We miss you all so much already!

Unparalleled, unbreakable spirit ABIGAIL GIBBS

I

have always known the Class of 2021 was special. We consistently had the best skit during Homecoming week, we won the Homecoming Relay, and our school spirit was unparalleled. The past year undoubtedly proved how unique we are. We had to come together despite everything keeping us apart. Texting through the Zoom calls to stay in touch. We found joy in the craziness, and we took what we could. Who else is able to say they were never given the opportunity to dance at the prom? We couldn’t go to sporting events, concerts, or even the cafeteria normally. We are going to look back at pictures of our senior year — smiling under our masks — and remember what we went through together. Although we can never experience normal Friday Night Lights again, we have memories we can hold

onto forever. The football team had so many nasal swabs their noses were sore, but they still took the field to experience any sort of normalcy they could. For the past three years I have been class president. This gave me the opportunity to really take pride in my friends’ and classmates’ accomplishments. This class has called on

representatives and leaders for climate change and social justice. Our clubs meet with local representatives, and we write letters to board members. This makes the Class of 2021 a group the world will never forget. We will walk across the stage with our masks on and remember how we came together despite the obstacles.

Our West Orange class of 2021 is the most unique and interesting class I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Through the 20-21 school year, I have witnessed our seniors come through the hardship that has accompanied a global pandemic with flying colors, showing the world that we are impervious to any challenge. I have seen our seniors take our athletic programs to new heights —balancing the commitments of athletic prowess and academic excellence — all while keeping safety at the forefront of their minds. I have seen our seniors guide our arts programs to demonstrate their creativity on a whole new level through safety protocol adjustments that have melted the core of their beloved disciplines. I have seen our seniors’ academic accomplishments maintaining the highest level of brilliance even fighting through pandemic-fueled apathy. But most importantly, I have seen our Warrior Family stay together, treat each other with kindness and compassion, and support each other regardless the heartache of loss of opportunity and our senior class were the pillars of this work. Congratulations to our West Orange High School Class of 2021 on an amazing year at the culmination of an incredible high school career. I could not be more thankful for having the opportunity to get to know these amazing students. They will certainly make West Orange very proud with whatever their next step is chosen to be. VALEDICTORIAN’S SPEECH

AMBER WEI One thousand, four hundred and 60 days ago, coming from a small, private middle school, I never imagined being valedictorian of the legacy class of Windermere High. During my time here, I embarked on the most fascinating journey with peers who challenge and inspire. I soared in AP Calculus with Buzz Lightyear exploring the elusive idea of infinity. In AP Research, I explored how treating the most complex diseases can be targeted at the cellular level. Today, I am beyond honored to represent the Class of 2021, and I feel that I can’t continue without expressing my sincere appreciation to all faculty, staff, administrators as well as our family and friends, who have nurtured and challenged our intellectual curiosity. Thank you! Because all you have done has enabled us to be who we are today! As the pioneering class of Windermere High, we depart to college as adventurers and the shapers of the future. Like Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Our experiences, accomplishments, and challenges we have overcome will serve as the steppingstones for our journey ahead. Let us not be the frog in the well who can only see the future as circumscribed by the well’s opening. But rather, let us be the frog who dared to jump out of the well, so we can see all the beauty, diversity, and possibilities the world has to offer. Overall, the sky is not the limit, beyond it lies stars — brighter than your imagination. So, graduates, be determined to go grab every opportunity to try and reach them.

Impassioned resilience ZIKORA MBADUGHA

T

o say we have had a challenging four years is an understatement. This year has especially tested us in unimaginable ways. Through all the stress and late nights I pulled during high school, the idea of the perfect senior year made it all seem worthwhile. Yet, when that “perfect” senior year was snatched from us, it felt like heartbreak. We were excited about our senior year Homecoming but lost that to the pandemic. We were excited to vote for the first time, but that excitement quickly dwindled through the stress of such a controversial election. We felt helpless as the surrounding social injustices became magnified. Through this all, we were forced to apply to colleges and decide about our futures. The picturesque senior year we all imagined quickly diminished. However, the one thing that I am grateful for is our unity through it all: We shared tears, laughter, smiles and more. People often like to harp on our generation for being

“disconnected” or “weak.” I disagree. This year, we all became more connected than ever as we were forced to learn to adapt and think outside of the box, making us more resilient than ever. Through these connections, I’ve seen some of my peers in the Class of 2021 use their voices to embolden others over social media, grow as activists and pursue their dreams. I truly believe we are a generation of pure and impassioned resilience. As we step into adulthood, I hope we continue to use this resilience. These four years have taught us to be world-changers, continue fighting against injustice and learn new ways to connect with people in meaningful ways. The rest of our future is in our hands and I challenge all of you (and me) to remain present and enjoy the dwindling days of our youth. As my favorite song and Windermere High School’s Class of 2021 senior song “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield states, “The rest of our lives are unwritten.” But with the pen in our hands, we have the power to fulfill our destiny.

A stubborn habit of hope

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” If you Google that saying, you will find that it is attributed to Winnie the Pooh. However, you will not find it in any of the books. So clearly what happened is Pooh said it to Eeyore, who texted it to Piglet, who tweeted it to Tigger, who then put it on his Facebook page. There is no other explanation. The words of the Grand Pooh Bear must be shared. I am hardly the first to look to Winnie the Pooh for wisdom. Such as defining the awesomeness of breakfast conversation between Pooh and Piglet. “When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?” “What’s for breakfast?” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?” “I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet. Pooh nodded thoughtfully. “It’s the same thing,” he said. Or on love as Winnie the Pooh says, “If you live to be one hundred, I hope I live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live a day without you.”

You cannot force yourself to love or be loved. As Pooh’s “Little Instruction Book” wisely observes: “Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there someday.” This, of course, clashes with modern culture that assumes that everything can be willed, worked for or bought. But I stand with Pooh Bear — some things must in their own time unfold. Right now, your transition from dependence to independence is unfolding. And that is tough on your moms and dads. To them, you are still the kid in the Pooh Bear pajamas snuggled on their lap, begging for just one more story about Christopher Robin and his friends. When they tucked you in with your Tigger, they could protect you from harm. But the river, while in no hurry, bends today and you begin a new, more independent part of your life. As hard as watching you grow up and move out is, your parents get it. They know their Winnie the Pooh. They understand what the “Little Instruction Book” is telling us when it says, “You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you.” They know that you have

DAEDALUS FITZGERALD

I to walk down from your corner of the staircase, up the graduation aisle and out to meet all of the people and events that will shape your life’s journey. And although I’m not sure I agree with Winnie when he says, “Everything is honey,” if you value what matters, you’ll find that most of life is pretty darn sweet. Class of 2021, I thank you for my four years with you. I believe in you. Now, leave this school that you love, and share your goodness with the world. For as Christopher Robin said, “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think”. I love each and every one of you, Congratulations and “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

’ve heard it said that people my age are too often reassured about their uniqueness. I’ve seen 40-somethings give cynical monologues about a surplus of participation trophies and a deficit of grit. I wonder if those same people are coming out the other side of the pandemic still believing kids these days have no idea what the world is really like. The Class of 2021 knows just how fragile all this is. For over a year, we have felt the world wobble under our feet. We have felt it threaten to tip over. Now, conversations with my peers have an undercurrent of equanimity. They talk about how grateful they are for small, passable experiences. They talk about how lucky this or that person is to have a job — or family members who are still there. Listening to them, I think about how if there’s one event that warrants trophies for participation, it’s probably global health crises. I have watched my peers maintain this relentless, ceaseless empathy. … It is so much

ed that the absence of tragedy is a miracle in its own right. And although I am grateful for our newfound gratitude, I also know it is the product of an unfairness. When you’re young, you have these unshakable beliefs about the world, and, usually, it takes a decade or so for them to be properly shaken. But for us, that’s already happened. In the end, though, I hope that trade-off is worth it. I hope the decade we would have spent mis-imagining the world is instead spent on grounded efforts that attempt to better it. I hope I’m right in my suspicion that the past year has left us uniquely equipped to improve the world around us. We’ve developed a stubborn habit of hope. We are held together by opposing forces: an understanding of just how many things need to be fixed in the world, and a belief that somehow we have it in us to fix them. And so I believe the things that make my class different — our perspective, our gratitude, our empathy — will contribute to making the coming years different, too.

easier to be numb to suffering, to turn the lives of those who are struggling into abstractions. Empathy is work. Yet, I saw my class choose compassionate attention over comfortable ignorance. Say what you will about the laziness of high school seniors, but the ones I know have more emotional grit than almost anyone else in my life. If I were to guess what would be different about my class, it might be that we will walk on the earth a little more gently — we’ve seen how easily bruised it is. We will speak to each other a little more softly — we know how easily drowned out we are. As we fit this or that piece of our adult lives together, we will do so with steadier hands. We know, now, what a precarious miracle the human story is, how strange and lovely it is to be here in spite of everything that can and will go wrong. That’s where the uniqueness lies. My class seems to have realized that we would be very lucky to live in a decade which doesn’t warrant more than a sentence or two in history books. We seem to have decid-

It seems like only yesterday you entered the doors of TFA for your senior year. You admirably persevered through the COVID challenges, as we were constantly reminded of being grateful for the small things. As you head off to college, let me challenge you to stay committed to the values that you were taught at home, your church and TFA. Remember: God is your refuge, and He has a plan and purpose for each one of you. It has been a privilege to be your principal, and I wait in anticipation to see what God is going to do in you and through you. Congratulations! Dr. Shayne Grove

With the world in a frenzy over the growing pandemic, and so many unanswered questions still looming, it was hard to believe that a senior year with any sort of normalcy was possible. There was strong doubt that returning to campus for the 2020-21 school year was even an option. Thankfully, The First Academy made the on-site arrival of students and faculty a priority, and with professional advisory coupled with hardworking staff, this priority was actualized. Although seniors were grateful

for this push to be on campus and not learn through a screen, there were still many complications and a widespread lack of motivation. Social-distancing guidelines prohibited many events such as the annual senior weekend retreat, Homecoming and in-person sporting events.

Every “yes” was hard-earned, while the disappointments seemed to stack upon one another. Yet, we started to realize every day spent on campus was a victory. Every moment used to build relationships was valuable. It was as if the year was completely divested, leaving us

with one thing to grasp onto. That was each other. Relationships became the top priority, and caring for other people was our mission. It could be challenging, sometimes, telling a group of high school seniors to keep a mask on their faces for an entire

school day, or canceling the senior retreat we have all been looking forward to, or even as bad as canceling our senior ski trip. Although those times might have felt discouraging at the time, this whole year not going the way we had planned was a blessing in disguise. This year

gave the majority of the class a chance to step back and appreciate the whole time that we really had each other. We were given the opportunity to get closer with one another and socialize — rather than just trying to make this year pass by as quickly as possible. Because of this year, teachers took on the role of mentors, strangers grew into friends, and classmates became family. Through the experiences of this year, we are now able to embrace what we learned and use it to walk into the next part of our

lives with a unique perspective. We are stronger despite our fear and resilient in the face of difficulties. In spite of the unique challenges our graduating class has faced, the teachers at TFA really worked to help our class unite and maintain a family environment. None of the good moments we had would be possible without them and their continual dedication to us students.

VALEDICTORIAN’S SPEECH

CHANDLER SUTHERIN Today is an exciting day for all of us, not just because you get to hear a speech I made in 20 minutes but because we will finally graduate and be free from high school. Four score and four years ago, my founding father decided that I would attend Foundation Academy. When I came here, I knew no one besides one other student. It did not take long to feel welcomed, though. These past four years have been amazing, not because of where I was but because of who I was here with. That brings me to my main point: I hope to talk to all of you about how life is about the journey, not the destination. I have played soccer throughout my entire high school career, and my favorite memories were not the games that we won or the district titles that we earned, three of them in fact! My best memories were messing around with my teammates and just playing the game. Even when watching other sports such as football, I don’t remember whether we won or lost the game, and I certainly don’t remember the score. What I remember is cheering and being with friends.

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

What a year it has been! It took a special group of seniors to be able to handle the adversity you have for the past year. Each and every one of you has handled it with a sense of grace and humility that enabled us to have a fun, safe and successful year. It has been my pleasure to serve as your principal, and I know God has amazing plans for all of you. On behalf of our entire staff, I want to

say thank you for taking the lead this year and setting the tone for the rest of the school. You all will continue to be part of my thoughts and prayers as you go into the world to make a difference. Congratulations to you on a job well done. Foundation Academy is better today than yesterday, thanks to the Class of 2021! Sarah Reynolds

Throughout my years here, our teachers could have just taught us the course, but many chose to make emotional connections with us. Mr. Davis taught us the importance of thinking for ourselves and to have thoughtful discussion. Mr. Bales taught us to think critically and made sure to not baby us to get the answers. In a few short months, we will move away from home and go out into the real world. Some of us are going to college to be engineers, others doctors, while some are going to focus on 4X. High school is now behind us, and we will be starting life for real. Everything that we have done up until this point was to get us ready for this. No one will be holding our hands and showing us the way anymore; we will all need to find our own path in this world. We have a lot of great potential and I hope that we will strive to do what God calls us to. I pray that each and every one of us remember the lessons that we have learned at Foundation Academy. I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity and letting me grow as a person. I also want to thank my second-biggest supporters, my parents and my brother, and my biggest supporter of all, my sister, who has always been my biggest cheerleader. And lastly let me leave you with the Sutherin Family Creed: Stand tall, wear a crown, and be sweet on the inside. Be a pineapple.

By struggle to the stars T

his school year has been very interesting, with COVID and construction at FA campus, the Class of 2021 has had to adapt to the struggles of the year, and has come out on top. From astounding academic success to incredible physical feats, the senior class at Foundation Academy has achieved great heights and grown stronger through everything that was thrown at us through this year. The Class of 2021 has seen phenomenal academic success, with numerous awards, scholarships and college acceptances we seniors have defied odds that were stacked against us this year. With the combined numbers of 60 students, we had more than 180 college acceptances, with 10 of those being acceptances to UF, breaking a new record for our school. Alongside those acceptances, we have earned more than $2.1 million worth of academic scholarships. As a class, we have been devoted to participating in various clubs

and organizations to keep in touch with the student body. Through organizations such as the National Honor Society to the Student Government Society, we have been determined to work in our school and make a difference. Each and every member of these clubs has had the persistence, devotion and tenacity needed to accomplish goals and achieve great heights. We have gained much, not only in academics but also in sports and other athletic activities. The senior class has gained about $3.3 million in athletic scholarships. Our athletic teams have achieved much this year, as well, such as the track team, which won districts and sent one of its relay teams to states. Our weightlifting team has also made great strides, as its senior won districts and had the opportunity to advance to states. Our football team also produced some great players, as three of our players signed to play at different colleges. These players are coming off of a great season, where they decimated

It’s so hard to believe that this year has come to an end and your time here at FA has come to a close. We have so much we want to say to you, but we realize it’s time to let you go. What a joy it has been this year to watch your class come together through the ups and downs; the year was certainly memorable! However, you guys persevered through times like no other class before, and you have made it! Our prayer for you is that you will always remember how much your Creator loves you and wants to keep a relationship with you. We pray you will remember how you persevered as a class as God was with you through adversity. Above all else, we pray you will keep your eyes focused ahead on the path God has designed for you. We hope you work hard through challenges, have faith through uncertainty, enjoy God’s blessings, and never settle for anything less than the best! Each one of you has

the competition on their way to victory. What makes our class special isn’t just what we have achieved but what we have overcome. The challenges and difficulties of this past year have shaped us and molded us into people who are able to rise to a challenge and accomplish much. Our big hurdle was COVID, which made things very difficult. From online learning to social distancing in classrooms, we have had to adapt to new situations and learn in a whole new way. Through this ordeal, I feel that our class has grown only stronger together, and that we all have a more tightly knit relationship now that we have all experienced and survived this trial. Overall, we as a senior class have had a very unique experience with everything this past year. It’s been hard for a lot of us, but we have learned many things throughout this year and are now even better equipped to face the challenges the future holds.

potential, and we know that your life can and will make a difference in the world. You have such a special place in our hearts, and we will never forget you! Paul’s letter to the Philippians perfectly expresses our prayers, hopes and love for you: “I thank God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus … And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ — to the glory and praise of God.” We love you! JOHN GELLER Good evening, classmates, families, friends and faculty. It is with great pleasure that I am able to speak to you tonight in person, and not over a Zoom call. We are gathered here to celebrate the great accomplishment of graduating high school, and beginning the first step to the real world and to our independence. I would like to begin by thanking my parents and my family for everything they have done to help me reach where I am today. Next, I would like to thank my friends for being with me through every step of this journey. And lastly, I would like to thank headmaster Dr. Lyng, High School Director Dr. Williams and Assistant High School Director Mr. Pesicek, as well as the entire Windermere Prep staff and faculty for their contributions to my academic and personal growth. Angela Duckworth, the author of “Grit,” defines the two main aspects of success as passion and perseverance. All of us sitting here today have persevered through something: years spent in the classroom working toward our diploma, coping with the fallout from a global pandemic, or learning how to stay connected when there is so much distance between us. We have the perseverance part covered, but what about our passion? Many of us do not possess

the slightest idea of where we want life to take us — or what we want to make of ourselves. And that’s OK, at least for now. I myself am constantly struggling with this very question. Although I do not yet know what I want to study, what I do know is I want to accomplish something meaningful. I don’t want to just make a living, but I want to be proud of what I do and what I contribute to society, and I challenge all of you to do the same. It may seem impossible, but as Angela Duckworth wrote, “The main thing is that greatness is doable. Greatness is many, many individual feats, and each of them is doable.” Though I am young, I have already gained some timeless wisdom. In my short life so far, I have come to the realization that the measure of our success is not in our material gain but is in the legacy we leave. It is inevitable that everyone’s days on this planet must come to an end. And after we are all six feet under, money, cars and houses will be gone. But what remains is our contribution to the common good and the impact we have made on those around us. So, if you’re ever searching for purpose or direction in life, I will leave you with the great words of poet Walt Whitman, who said, “That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” In this chaotic universe we inhabit, time constantly pushes forward, bringing all things to an end. However, what truly matters is the legacy you have created. And so, when you one day reflect back on the life you have lived, I hope you are all proud of the verse you have contributed.

FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL DIRECTOR

Resiliency, community set 2021 Lakers apart T

he Class of 2021 has shown resilience and determination in many aspects of our senior year. In a year that has all of your traditional “lasts,” it was sometimes hard to come to grips with the fact that we might not experience some of the events that we had been looking forward to since elementary school. For many nostalgic students (such as myself), we wanted this to be a year that was remembered forever. And this is exactly what the Class of 2021 did — not only at WPS but all across the world. I have been a student at WPS since PreK-3, so it has been amazing to watch everyone grow into their own unique individuals. I’ve seen friend groups, styles and personalities change, and this growth is something that I love about our class. This is only a testament to how well our class dealt with the adversity thrown our way

this past year. Another thing I love about our class is the passion of every student to follow their heart and go wherever it takes them. We may not all have the same interests, but we all have a mutual respect for everyone’s passions. Being at a smaller school, we are able to take a glimpse into one another’s hobbies and support them in any way possible. The culmination of different hobbies, personalities, dreams, opinions and interests is what makes the Class of 2021 at WPS a special class to be a part of. After we graduate high school, we will all soon be leading very different lives with very different careers. Some may become astronauts, actresses, engineers, doctors or entrepreneurs. But regardless of where we end up, we will always have a common thread of WPS to connect us all.

— NATALIE WORK

I

n these past four years, the Class of 2021 has shown unmatched resilience and determination in our academic journey. Especially in our junior and senior year in which we navigated a global pandemic and adapted between traditional, online and hybrid learning — all without missing a step. All of this would not have been possible if it weren’t for the sense of community that Windermere Prep’s senior class possesses, which I believe to be a unique characteristic. It is referred to on our school crest as “Unitas” and is a term which encompasses the collaborative and cooperative nature of our learning environment. On the Windermere Prep campus, while there is plenty of competitive spirit, there is a larger sense of wanting to help your peers and watch everyone succeed as a whole. Students not only succeed on their own, but there is a strong culture of striving to assist and push

You will always be an unforgettable class in my memory for many reasons. I have watched many of you grow up to become the young adults who are going to take over the world one day. We have all witnessed the resilience that you demonstrated throughout the years, but particularly in this pandemic experience. I am grateful to know you and to have been part of your journey. I expect great things from each of you. Dr. Leslie Williams

others to also be their very best. No student seeks success at the expense of other students or while hoping to see others fail. This is something that I have enjoyed most about my high school experience and

about growing alongside my fellow classmates. By having a relatively small class size, this feeling of community and collaboration is strengthened as virtually all students are able to develop personal relationships

with each other, and at the very minimum, students are on a first-name basis. As this year draws to a close, it is important to reflect back upon our successes and give thanks to our peers for what

they have done to help us grow and reach our current positions. I personally thank and congratulate the Class of 2021.

NATALIA TOOMER I would like to start off with some thank-you’s. Thank you to my mother for always pushing me to do the best, teaching me to keep my faith high and believing in myself. Thank you to my dad for your honesty and teaching me to stay true to myself and stay focused on my goals. Thank you to my godmother, who always picked me up from school even though she hated car circle. And of course,

thank you to the teachers and staff for working so hard, putting up with our attitudes and putting in the extra time to help us with our studies. Thank you to Mr. Mangal for always coming to school with a positive attitude. You taught me to see the good in everything, even when it is challenging. I remember being 7 years old when I first attended Hope Charter School. My mom had a surprise for me, and I was so excited. I thought I would receive a toy or something that would spark my interest. But no! My mother informed me that I would be enrolled in a charter school, and I was so disappointed. Who knew that that would end up being the best decision for my school career? I was surrounded by teachers who cared about their students. I also was reminded of the importance of community

service. Volunteering allowed me to meet people from different walks of life and taught me responsibility and good work ethic. Legacy gave us fun experiences as well, from sixth-grade dance parties with Mr. Mangal to Mr. Stacey crying after reading the Outsiders. Along with the fun we had at Legacy, there are also many important life lessons that we have learned along the way. It is like what Mr. Yoakum always tells us, attitude is everything. Our attitudes can determine our successes. A quote that I would like to share with you guys is one from Steve Harvey, “The road to success is always under construction.” Graduating high school is not where our success ends. It is only the beginning. It is a never-ending journey that will be filled with trial and error. There will be challenges

that we face that may feel scary, but those challenges give us the opportunity to grow and achieve new successes. As we leave the halls of Legacy, let us cherish the friendships that we’ve made, and charge into the future with the lessons we’ve learned. As we carry on into our future endeavors, remember that we are coming from Legacy Charter high school. We are eagles, let us all continue to soar like eagles. Like our creed says, when life is not fair, I will not complain, I choose a positive outlook. The future belongs to me because I am seizing the day. In closing, I would like to leave you all with this quote, “Your attitude, not your aptitude, determines your altitude.”

KENDYL CARDWELL I am honored to be able to speak today on behalf of the Class of 2021. Thank you all for being here to support us: today — but especially all of the previous days. Including those when we have been less glamorous, more irritable and highly stressed. We will never be able to thank you enough for your endless dedication and confidence in us. I guess it is only appropriate to end this journey by reflecting back on the start. At 9 years old, I was at a Florida State football game, when I told my mom that I wanted her to be my college roommate. Surrounded by a sea of garnet, gold and intoxicated college students, I decided in complete seriousness that I would go to FSU and study English with my mother as my roommate. Yes, I actually said it out loud, and I’m sure way too many people heard me. It turned out my prediction was wrong in every way possible. The issue was that, when I made that declaration, I only wanted to go to Florida State, because that’s what team my family supported. I only wanted to major in English, because that’s what my dad majored in. And I only wanted my mom to be my roommate, because she was my best friend. We are a product of our environment. It influences our opinions, our thought processes, our perspectives. Montverde Academy is always referred to as a family, and over my many years here, I have seen that term come to life. Like the way our parents were at the center of our world during childhood, Montverde has been our world for the past years. Our experiences here have shaped us into the adults we will become and formed memories that we will look back on forever. After everyone made it through Mr. Pauli’s eighth-grade science class with 96s and a breadth of powerlifting knowledge, we entered the unfamiliar world of high school. We went from killing it on the dance floor at Montverde’s first establishment of Homecoming to killing trees with Dr. A’s infamous history packets. We Spark-noted our way through Shakespeare, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who watched the ACDC econ edition of “everything you need to know for the AP Macro exam in

less than 30 minutes.” We’ve spent much money on Student Center cookies, collected every possible dress code infraction (apparently you can’t wear red ankle socks with chili peppers) and a few MemeVerde stickers. We even all got the flu together, thanks to a yearly phenomenon known as “MAIT fever.” Crammed into the gym and screaming for Monday off, this was always everyone’s favorite time of the year. Among the mundane trials of high school life, we have accomplished amazing things. We’ve earned everything from state titles to millions of dollars in academic scholarships. There are future Broadway stars, classical musicians, scientific inventors and certainly NBA players here, but the most impressive accomplishment is we are all dedicated to doing what we love and doing it devotedly. We always hear about the 90-plus countries represented at the academy, and I think one of the most amazing implications of this is that we will eventually bring these passions all over the world. As we spread out across the globe, we will be leaving the Montverde family we have formed and depended on. However, just like I realized I didn’t want my mom to be my college roommate and that I needed independence from the world I had lived in for so long, we are ready for the next step. We are prepared to welcome the new opportunities with maturity and excitement. I have been here for six years, and others have been here for up to 15. That’s quite a long time. So, embrace the change that will be inevitable. Montverde has developed the foundations of our character, but now we get to immerse ourselves in a new environment. With unique perspectives, new friends, freedom of study, and endless opportunities, we have no idea who any of us will become. While grappling with our new independence and trying to discover who we want to be, mistakes are inevitable. In the words of Mrs. Treweek, “People are going to bleep up. It’s how you take it, it’s what you chose to live with it. And no matter the path you choose, give a little grace along the way.” Treweek, I’m so happy my path included having you as a role model, coach and friend for six years. You’ve made such a big difference in the lives of so many people here. I thought it would be appropriate to end this speech with a quote from Dr. Browdy since many of us have ended math class each day smiling with one of her quotes. “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.”

PARTING WORDS Resilience is the first word that comes to mind when we consider the Class of 2021. Montverde Academy faced many challenges this year because of COVID-19, as all students switched to virtual learning in March 2020. One year later, some students remain online or hybrid (some online and some inperson classes), and everyone is still wearing masks and practicing social distancing in classrooms. Some students have physically not seen their classmates in more than a year, and because MVA is an international school, others are remote learners living on the other side of the globe, unable to return to classes due to travel restrictions. We, the faculty and staff, have constantly been impressed by the ability of our students to face these challenges and thrive despite the setbacks. They have celebrated prom and homecoming and stayed strong — thriving in competitive sports as well as music and theater conservatory programs. Our Advanced Placement program is as strong as ever, and we can personally attest to the strength and fortitude of our senior scholars and athletes. Even more impressive than their academic performance is the at2021. titude of the students. They remain cheerful and enthusiastic, prepared for class and eager to learn. We are so proud of our senior class and know that their resilience will enable them to handle the challenges of the future. Congratulations, Class of 2021!
