So when the opportunity came across the street, I figured I’d just do something else (instead of another Big Easy).” To decide what kind of food to serve at the new restaurant, the couple turned to their loyal Big Easy patrons for help. “I did a survey asking people what kind of food they need for this area, and a lot of them were talking about Latin American and SEE SOUTH PAGE 5

Attendees of the West Orange Chamber of Commerce 2017 Economic Update Luncheon held May 25 received the chance to hear the latest progress with development projects under construction in their own backyards. The annual luncheon, which took place at the Ocoee Lakeshore Center, was sponsored by UCF and Orlando Health. Former Orange County District 1 Commissioner S. Scott Boyd posed questions to four featured guests, followed by a Q&A session from the public. The guest speakers were Scott T. Boyd, CEO of Boyd Development Corporation; Sandra French, marketing manager of the West Oaks Mall; Jim Drayton, president of the MetroWest Master Association; and Myles Thomas, founder and managing director of Tag Aero. HAMLIN TOWN CENTER

Hamlin Town Center in the Horizon West community is a mixed-use project that will incorporate retail, office, residential and commercial uses on 850 acres located on both the west and east side of New Independence Parkway off State Road 429. As the largest town center project in Central Florida, it is still years away from full completion. Former commissioner S. Scott Boyd recalled how the Hamlin Town Center project accounted for almost 50% of building permits issued in Orange County during his time as commissioner. “Hamlin started as a 640-acre project, and then we acquired another 300 acres,” said developer Scott T. Boyd. “We’re blessed to be in a position that is surrounded by so much growth. … So we’re actively developing a number of projects on the commercial side right now and primary retail as we’re just getting ready to start our lakefront development with our anchor, the Cinépolis theater.” Recently, rumors — including a list of tenants that included Ocean Prime, Mesa21, Hawkers Orlando, Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant, Zgallerie, Vapiano, Fossil and OMEGA Watches — have circulated social media sites. Scott T. Boyd said he

does not know how such information was released and that his company currently is in talks with potential tenants. However, aside from Cinépolis, no decisions have been finalized regarding the companies on the list. “We’ve contacted a number of the tenants and the restaurant operators to apologize,” Scott T. Boyd said. “There’s a number of those that we are talking with, but they have not committed, and we have not come to an agreement yet. So even though it wasn’t us that was circulating this — we’re not sure how that got out — we certainly wanted to apologize and not come off as presumptuous. … A number of them were offended that we would unilaterally put their name out, which we did not do. I understand people want to know what’s coming, but until the business piece is done, we don’t want to go public.” Scott T. Boyd said several buildings are currently in various stages of design and permitting and that by May 2018, there should be about 18 to 20 buildings at the 429 and New Independence Parkway intersection.

“I understand people want to know what’s coming, but until the business piece is done, we don’t want to go public.” — Scott T. Boyd

“Some of them will be single tenants, like Publix or Cinépolis, but a number of them will be multi-tenant buildings that will have anywhere from two to six tenants per building,” he said. “So if there are 18 to 20 buildings, you can imagine that’s a lot of folks and lots of tenants.” Scott T. Boyd said he expects roughly 85% of the development on the east side of the interchange will be completed in five years but said he has no estimated timeline for the development slated for the west side. “To give you an answer to that, I’d have to first stop buying land,” he said. Water warning expanded GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER

Although the coming rainfall certainly is welcome in the middle of a prolonged drought, it likely will take a few months for Florida’s aquifer levels to recover from the dry winter. In anticipation of that recovery period, the St. Johns River Water Management District on May 9 expanded its water shortage warning to all 18 counties under its jurisdiction, which includes a portion of Orange County. Central Florida has seen several brush fires since the SJRWMD first issued a water shortage warning in March. Orange County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Ngoc Huynh said the department has responded to 285 brushfires from March 1 to May 26 — 32 of which required assistance from the Florida Forest Service to extinguish. In 2016, OCFR responded to 115 brushfires within the same time frame. “I think part of the issue is that even though we got some rain recently, it’s still not what we need in order to avoid dry conditions,” Huynh said. Although brush fires generally are classified as one of three categories depending on the number of units dispatched, the dryness of the area and certain weather conditions, the department tends to elevate the category as a precaution during dry conditions. Regardless of the conditions, the district’s water shortage warning is based on data-driven analysis that stems from rainfall and groundwater levels that are in more than 2,000 sites throughout its jurisdiction. To ensure the water residents consume does not overwhelm

ORANGE COUNTY

the supply available at any one time, the district requests residents and commercial businesses abide by the year-round mandatory watering restrictions, which can differ depending on the time of year. “We’re entering the wet season, which begins (in June), and so we should anticipate additional rain, although we do have a period that we need to make up for,” said SJRWMD spokeswoman Danielle Spears. “Conditions haven’t reached a point where there’s an expectation of insufficient water to meet demand, but we are at a point where we do need to elevate the conversation about conserving water.” The counties within the district’s jurisdiction that had the least amount of rain were Orange, Brevard, Osceola and Okeechobee, each of which received less than one inch during May. The last water shortage warning was issued in 1999, but if groundwater levels do not recover quickly enough, the district could issue a higher phase warning that could potentially lead to more restrictions and increases in water bills due to the constraint on water allocations. “You’re not going to run out of water; you’re going to run out of cheap drinking water, and that’s what groundwater is,” Spears said. “What we do is we basically allocate the water to utilities and say, ‘OK, you can take X amount of groundwater per day.’ So that’s our role. But some of them do have tiered billing, which means that as use goes up, the cost goes up.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

Unmowed yards. Boats and RVs parked in the front yard. Uninhabitable buildings. Oakland officials are discussing ways to enhance the code enforcement to clean up the town, meeting town regulations and monitor compliance of ongoing events such as watering.

The town of Oakland, which once had a productive Code Enforcement Board, has been operating with a magistrate, Town Manager Dennis Foltz said at the May 23 Town Commission meeting, but there hasn’t been as much activity as there should be. “I want to see us concentrate on priorities,” he said. A dedicated code enforcement officer once patrolled the town,

and then Oakland contracted with Ocoee part-time. But Commissioner Mike Satterfield thinks control would be easier if the town had a codeenforcement officer patrolling regularly. “I don’t want to be Stepford, USA … but I want to see some decent code enforcement,” Mayor Kathy Stark said. Commissioner Sal Ramos suggested all residents be given a list of the code-enforcement rules. It is Code Enforcement’s responsibility to constantly mon-

itor all issues in the town, Foltz said in a memo to the commission. “However, the priority and level of enforcement is somewhat ‘in the eye of the beholder,’ and the prime ‘beholder’ is the Town Commission,” he said. The commission agreed code enforcement needs to be addressed and will discuss it in detail at a future meeting. “We have to be consistent and fair,” Stark said. Mexican foods,” Morgan said. “So that’s how it began.” On Cinco de Mayo, Casa Jimenez officially opened its doors and featured a variety of Latin American food and a tequila bar. For Morgan, the decision to serve Latin American food was tied to his family’s Columbian roots and desire not to be just another Mexican restaurant. “I was trying to do something that would set us apart,” he said. “I started doing some research looking at different cuisines for the Latin American area and found that each country has specific dishes that they’re known for. They all have their own little flair.” Morgan and Misti based their menu on that flair. Although the menu includes some typical Mexican fare, such as burritos and fajitas, the primary focus is on foods from a variety of Latin American countries, such as a Spanish paella and Jamaican jerk chicken. “We feature countries like Brazil, Spain and Puerto Rico and have a dish from each of those countries,” Morgan said. The restaurant features a main dining room, an open-air bar area and a patio with picnic tables and umbrellas. The bar area is made from reclaimed wood and features a variety of tequilas on display. “It makes it a little bit different,” Morgan said. Over the last few weeks, the couple has been working to finalize the menu and finish training the staff so they can extend their hours of operation. But so far, the community reception has been positive and the loyal customers from The Big Easy now split their time between the cajun restau-

inter Garden, Ocoee and Gotha all honored the memories of military personnel who died in combat at their respective Memorial Day ceremonies. Ocoee hosted its ceremony Friday, May 26, at the Ocoee Lakeshore Center. Charisma Tran — Miss Young Preteen Earth United States — performed some musical selections, and U.S. Army First Sgt. Daniel Kalagian was the keynote speaker. Kalagian is also commander of the West Orange VFW Post 4305 in Winter Garden. Additionally, the Ocoee Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors and carried the American flag and ceremonial wreath out to the city’s memorial site. Winter Garden resident and former city commissioner Theo Graham was recognized for his dedication at the city’s annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 29. Graham organized the program for 25 years and was responsible for helping raise the necessary funds for the war memorial. A total of 24 names of Winter Garden residents are engraved on the granite structure. Wreaths were placed in front of the wall in recognition of World Wars I and II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. Guest speaker Jack Stultz, a retired Army lieutenant general, spoke of the numerous wars and

said, “We pause today to celebrate the spirit of America … to protect our future.” Les Jones, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, played taps at the close of the Winter Garden ceremony. A few miles away, Woodland Memorial Park and Funeral Home hosted its 67th annual Memorial Day Service. Hundreds gathered for the event, which included keynote speakers Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and U.S. Army Lt. Col. Robert Carter. The event also featured music by the Orlando Concert Band and singer Donna Leigh Hinkley. Presentation of colors was provided by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and Dr. Phillips High School’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, followed by local troops and packs of the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. After a presentation of colors, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office did a flyover during the national anthem. The service also included a Flowers of Remembrance ceremony for the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Boy Scouts helped toll the Liberty Bell, followed by a rifle volley salute from the Orange County Sheriff’s Honor Guard and a performance of Echo Taps by the Orlando Concert Band. — GABBY BAQUERO, DANIELLE HENDRIX AND AMY QUESINBERRY

13690 block of West Colonial Drive. At about 1 a.m., officers were dispatched to a gas station regarding a suspicious man who was bothering the customers. The man was found in the middle of the road impeding traffic exiting a nearby shopping plaza. Upon making contact with the man, officers discovered the man was unable to form coherent sentences and repeatedly slurred his words while staggering around with alcoholic breath. The man grew angry upon seeing the presence of the officers and began screaming and rambling. The man, in his fury, smashed his cellphone on the ground repeatedly, took it apart and began chucking the pieces at cars traveling on Winter Garden Vineland Road. The man hit the side of an oncoming car and was arrested for his violent behavior. MAY 11

The male shoplifter allegedly went to the men’s department and selected 60 items of clothing before walking in a dressing room. The man exited the dressing room with 20 of the 60 items and returned the 20 items to the men’s department before proceeding to the children department. There, the man selected four articles of clothing before before returning to the men’s department and selecting five more. 2730 block of Coventry Lane. At about 1 a.m., an officer performing a routine area check of the Coventry neighborhood observed a parked car within a park that was closed. Upon approaching the vehicle, the driver rolled down the window, and a fog of smoke that smelled like cannabis came billowing out. The officer also saw cannabis in the open glove compartment. The officer asked the car’s two occupants if there were any gun, drugs or knives inside the car, to which they replied there was not. Both occupants were ordered to exit the vehicle so the officer could search the car. The officer found two blunts in the car, as well as a 9 mm handgun with a loaded magazine and a black sock containing a glass jar that held 14.5 grams of cannabis. MAY 13

10500 block of West Colonial Drive. At about 6:30 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a department store in reference to a suspected retail theft. Upon arrival, the officer was informed two females had been seen selecting merchandise in the cosmetics department. The women allegedly grabbed the items, headed to the men’s department and concealed some of the items in their respective purses. One of the women told the officer her friend “got her to steal the items” and that she does not have a criminal record. The second woman, upon being questioned by another officer, said, “It’s obvious what happened, we (expletive) up.”

NO MORE FOOT OR ANKLE PAIN! Lake Bennet Medical Center

The School of Rock is a performance-based music school set up to teach students of all ages how to rock out in a band. “Our approach to teaching is to combine a weekly private music lesson with weekly group rehearsals,” Simmons said. “Students get to use the lessons in a real rock band kind of setting. It’s a really fun way to learn.” School of Rock utilizes classic music from bands such as AC/ DC and Pink Floyd to teach basic music theory and knowledge. As students progress, they are placed in bands with their peers and perform gigs on stage in front of live audiences. “There’s now a reason for these students to be committed to go home and practice, to put in the work to improve,” Simmons said. “There’s a show coming up, so they want to be ready. They don’t want to be that guy or girl who didn’t master their part.” Some School of Rock graduates have enjoyed continued success, appearing on “American Idol,” “The Voice” and on Broadway. Others even have signed record deals. The instruments taught at the School of Rock include drum set, guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and vocals. Typically, drums and gui-

tar are the most popular instruments with students, Simmons said, but at the new location, vocal instructions appears to be at the top of the list. Simmons fell for the School of Rock concept as it provided students of all levels a skill and hobby they could turn to no matter the circumstances. “Music is something you can always turn to,” he said. “It’s nice to know I am giving that gift to others.” The new school had its grand opening April 29 and already has enrolled more than 20 students in its program. “It’s been great,” Simmons said. “We’re off to a great start, and we’re very excited about it.” With eight private-lesson rooms and two group-rehearsal rooms, the school has the capacity to take on about 150 students, and those interested in learning the art of rock ‘n’ roll can start as early as 6 years old. “It’s really a first-experience music approach,” Simmons said about teaching the 6- and 7-yearolds. “It’s kind of like an instrument petting zoo. We get to goof around and have fun. They can play a piano, sing in a mic, bang on a drum.” And during lessons and group rehearsals, students learn more than just music.

“They learn about community, teamwork, responsibility, being accepting of different musical styles, personality traits — there’s so much more that goes on here,” Simmons said. “There’s nothing like playing in a live type of setting.” Simmons has loved music his entire life and has worked as an amateur musician for years. “I played a lot in college,” he said. “Then five or six years ago, I had a change in employment and was looking around for what I wanted to do next. The School of Rock allowed me to continue my passion.” In addition to teaching the students himself, Simmons has five other music teachers on staff at the school. “I’m really excited about the professionals we’ve got working for us,” he said. “They’re the real deal.” Although the school is only a few weeks old, Simmons said he is excited to watch his new students develop into rock stars. “You can’t really do what we do anywhere else,” he said. Two West Orange baseball alumni squared off as the starting pitchers in this past weekend’s ACC Championship Game in Louisville, Kentucky. Andrew Karp got the start for FSU, while Tyler Baum got the start for North Carolina. Austin Bergner, a Windermere Prep alum who started his varsity career at West Orange, also pitched in relief for UNC. The Seminoles won, 7-3.

Fresh off its second consecutive state championship, the West Orange softball team — champion of the FHSAA’s Class 9A — was ranked No. 3 in the state in the final Miracle Sports Softball Poll. The Warriors (28-3) finished behind Class 5A Champion Coral Springs Charter (30-1) and Class 8A Champion Oakleaf (29-2). On March 4, West Orange defeated Oakleaf, 4-0.

THE SPLIT

SIDELINE SCENE

Persistence pays off for Fontana

West Orange High has enjoyed some of its most successful years of athletics within the past decade. Now, with the impending opening of Windermere High, programs that have experienced new heights in recent years are bracing for the split. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

ifferent teams are going to feel it in different ways — some more than others — but there is no way around it. As this school year ends, so too does an era for the West Orange High athletics department. In the 12 years since the last time it was rezoned due to the opening of a relief school (Ocoee High in the fall of 2005), the Winter Garden-based high school has fielded some of its most successful teams in its history — specifically from 2015 through 2017. Formerly a school that served Winter Garden, Oakland, part of south Ocoee and most of Horizon West, West Orange now is set to lose most of its athletes coming from Horizon West. And although the split is not official until Windermere High opens in the fall, it already is being felt. The West Orange football team was practicing with 25 fewer players than normal this spring, according to head coach Bob Head. However, the veteran head coach said he is not too concerned about what the split will mean for his program. “It’s just less bodies to develop as well as to practice against,” Head said of the drop in numbers. “Overall, we’re not frustrated or worried in any way.” The fact remains, though, that West O ra n g e ’s football program has enjoyed its best stretch of seasons

within the past five years, including a run to the state semifinal in 2015. FALL FORM

The football team isn’t alone, either. Ross Usie’s volleyball program also has achieved a number of firsts in the past three seasons, and the head coach for the Warriors said his program will lose most of its junior varsity team (between 14 and 17 girls), as well as a pair of outside hitters from his varsity squad. Despite that, Usie said it was important not to let the impending split have too much influence on how he coached last fall and said he is excited for some of the players who will get new opportunities with the brand-new program. “We knew the new school would take a large number of our athletes, but we did not let it affect last season,” Usie said. “Some of the younger girls are happy they will be able to make an impact on their varsity squad at the new school.” The volleyball program also will lose future players that previously came its way from Bridgewater Middle School — winner of three consecutive county championships in girls volleyball. In fact, Windermere’s first volleyball coach is Layla West, the coach of those Bridgewater Middle teams. The fall sport that will be hit the hardest, though, may be golf. There were plenty of baseball people who believed Nolan Fontana was Big League-ready when he graduated from West Orange High in 2009. Warriors head coach Jesse Marlo was among them. “He definitely could have played in the infield in the Big Leagues right out of high school,” Marlo said. Because of that, there was a time when Marlo thought Fontana would be the first player he coached to make it to The Show. After three standout years with the Florida Gators, Fontana had been taken in the second round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft by the Houston Astros. But with the Astros’ depth in the infield combined with his struggles at the plate, Fontana always faced an uphill battle. Instead, Mason Williams would become the first former Warrior to break through in the summer of 2015, and for a time, it remained to be seen whether Fontana would top out at the Triple-A level.

“He’s fought through adversity and he’s had a tougher road then others. I always had a good feeling that he was going to make it.” — Warriors head coach Jesse Marlo

When the Los Angeles Angels claimed him off waivers in November, though, there was the feeling that a fresh start with a different organization was the ticket. And on May 22 — just short of five years to the day that Fontana was drafted in 2012 — Marlo was in the stands in St. Pete when his former standout made his Major League debut for the Angels in a road game against the Tampa Bay Rays after being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake City. The persistence of the Winter Garden native has finally paid off. “He’s fought through adversity and he’s had a tougher road then others,” Marlo said. “I always had a good feeling that he was going SEE FRESH PAGE 16

He currently plays for the Winter Garden Little League and also plays on a travel team with Empire Baseball Academy. This summer, he’s traveling to Cooperstown to play in the 2017 American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament.

When did you start playing baseball? I’ve been playing since I was 9 years old. I like playing, because it’s fun and you get to learn new things. Which position is your favorite to play? First base is my favorite, because usually I get the ball a lot there. It’s fun making plays at that spot. What are you excited about for the Cooperstown tour-

nament this summer? I’m excited to be going with the team (Red Raiders) to compete. I want to go to the museums and look around. What is it like when you’re up at bat getting ready to hit? I like the feel of it whenever you hit a ball really hard. The inside pitch is my favorite to hit. How does it feel to hit a homer? Usually once I hit it, I know it’s gone. If you could play for any MLB team, which one would you choose? The Marlins, because that’s the local team. I like the players, and they have a good history there. What’s the difference for you between playing Little League and travel ball? Travel ball is more competitive and harder coaching. I like it, because it’s challenging. Little League is more like playing for fun. What’s the most challenging things when you’re playing baseball? Trying to stay in front of a ball coming hard at you. What is your favorite subject at school? Science. I feel like science is easier to learn about. It’s not pounding stuff into your head. It’s fun. What’s your favorite food? Mexican food because of the spice, and it tastes better than regular food. — BRITTANY GAINES

coach Scott Baker said he is losing his No. 1 and No. 4 from the fall 2016 season — both rising juniors. Moreover, he would have lost his entire starting five had Windermere High not have forgone a senior class its first year. WINTER IS COMING

Regarding winter sports, West Orange’s soccer team is another team that has become an annual contender. Veteran head coach Scott Fisher said his junior varsity team will be decimated, losing 12 players, while his varsity squad will lose three players to the new school. Although this coming season may not be overly affected, Fisher said the split sheds on light on the future. “It makes it hard to build for the future when so many young players are leaving,” Fisher said. On that front, Fisher and other coaches may be able to lean on the expertise of coaches who were around in 2005 when Ocoee High opened — including boys basketball coach Eric Jones. Jones, who estimates he is losing half of the players in his program (14 of 30), said some programs may be set back a few years before they get their feet

back under them. “It definitely requires rebuilding for two to four years,” Jones said. “It feels like starting a new program.” DIAMOND DAYS

Two of the more interesting teams that will be impacted by the split are teams whose respective seasons just ended: West Orange’s softball and baseball teams. The Warriors’ softball program is flying high as can be, winner of consecutive state championships, but head coach Todd LaNeave acknowledges the split will be significant to his program. “It will be difficult, moving forward with the new school, to put the collective talent with one team on one field — we’re losing some pretty good players,” LaNeave said. LaNeave said he is losing five players from his junior varsity team and one pitcher from his state championship varsity team. However, he believes both West Orange and Windermere will field competitive teams in the years to come. “I think (the rivalry) will be fun — and interesting,” LaNeave said. Meanwhile, Jesse Marlo’s baseball program — a program

that just ended its season in the regional final — is set to lose one varsity player and half of its junior varsity roster. Marlo, who had just started at West Orange when the Ocoee split happened, said this time around it will be more pronounced. “This one is going to affect us a little bit more — (Windermere is) going to be competitive right off the bat,” he said. Like softball, Marlo is optimistic there will be a best-case scenario in which both programs thrive. In part, Marlo is confident in this based on his knowledge of the youth travel ball scene. “There’s so many people moving over here, the whole west side of town is flooded with baseball players,” Marlo said. “I’m still confident that we’re going to stay strong.” How exactly each program will respond to this latest bit of adversity is yet to be seen. One thing for certain, though, is that starting this fall, when former Warriors line up against those in orange and blue — this time wearing navy and green — it will be a unique occasion for the community here in West Orange. to make it.” It remains to be seen how long Fontana’s stay in the Bigs will last. In 14 at-bats so far, he has just one hit — but that one hit was a memorable one. Fontana’s first hit as an Angel was a solo home run against the Miami Marlins May 26. To his credit, some of those outs have been well-hit balls. What’s more, it’s always been his glove work, as well as his ability to get on base, that has helped Nolan stand out and likely were part of the reasoning for his call-up. However long Fontana’s stay — and hopefully it is a long one — there will be another number retired next spring at Heller Bros. Ballpark on the campus of

Warriors close bounce-back spring with win West Orange topped Gainesville on the road May 26 in a low-scoring affair. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

Sports often is a world which emphasizes the old question, “What have you done for me lately?” With that in mind regarding the West Orange football team, a disappointing 2-8 record in 2016 is in the past, and what the Warriors have done for their faithful following lately is defeat Gainesville High 10-7 on the road May 26, to close an upbeat spring. “We’ve had a great spring,” head coach Bob Head said. “(There’s been) a lot of energy, and everyone’s been really positive, working really hard.” Sinica Sigler scored the only touchdown of the game for the Warriors on a goal-line rush, and Andrew Brickweg kicked a field goal for the Warriors. Other highlights for West Orange included a 40-yard reception from Ocoee transfer Keyshawn Goins that helped set up the Brickweg field goal. Strong play on the defensive side of the ball limited the host Hurricanes to just one scoring drive. One area that will remain a question going into the summer is the quarterback position. For the

first time in several years, there is uncertainty about who will be taking snaps at quarterback for the Warriors. Foundation Academy transfer Elijah Stimmell took first team reps for the Warriors in Gainesville, but he had been competing with Brendan Cyr for the starting job before a broken finger ended Cyr’s spring prematurely. RECRUITING BUZZ

As is often the case during the spring, coaches from around the college football world flocked to practices in Central Florida — and it was no different at West Orange. Among those turning heads for the Warriors were rising senior defensive end Tre Jackson and rising junior wide receiver Darrell Harding. For Jackson, activity has picked up with a variety of schools from the FBS level — including FAU and Air Force — to elite academic schools such as Princeton and Yale. His athleticism comes in handy for a position at which college programs often need help. “He’s making great grades and working really hard,” Head said. “He’s got the opportunity to play at a really high level.” Harding has impressed college coaches with his size and speed — he stands 6-foot-5 — and the offers are reflecting that. Mississippi State extended an offer earlier in the spring, with coaches from UF, FSU, Purdue and Duke among those showing significant interest. “He’s got a good chance to

have about 10 or 15 offers before the spring is over,” Head said of Harding. Other Warriors to keep an eye on are offensive lineman Hawke Forsythe and linebacker Dametri Hill, both rising seniors. Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

A rendering of what the corner of Winter Garden’s newest community, Heritage at Plant Street, will look like.

DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER

I

WINTER GARDEN

f you drive by Plant and Newell streets a year from now, you’ll see six craftsman-style town-home buildings, complete with classic brownstone front porches, fronting what will soon be the Heritage at Plant Street neighborhood. It’s the type of style that Jeff Kaizer, vice president of sales and marketing for developer M/I Homes, said will help to sculpt that area of downtown Winter Garden. In October 2016, Winter Garden commissioners approved the rezoning of 16.66 acres located at East Plant Street and East Newell Street to build town houses and single-family residences. David

Byrnes, area president of M/I Homes, said the Heritage at Plant Street will offer 41 single-family homes and 43 town houses. THE COMMUNITY

The row that will face Plant Street includes six town-home buildings, with another row of town houses behind it. The singlefamily homes also will be located behind the town homes. “Instead of an entry wall, it’s going to be the town homes, and the town homes will have direct access to step right onto the West Orange Trail,” Kaizer said. “You’ll see a lot of large front porches on the single-family homes. That was important to Winter Garden — that if someone was to drive through the community, the streetscape we create is not just an average community, but there’s also beauty and detail in the exte-

rior of the homes.” The single-family homes will range from 1,800 to 3,800 square feet and include three to five bedrooms and two to four-andone-half baths. Additionally, the homes will have a two- or threecar garage. The town houses range in size from 1,600 to 1,800 square feet and will have three bedrooms and two-and-one-half baths. They also will have a two-car garage and are alley-load style. Kaizer said M/I Homes’s concept for the community is described in one word: “NUUrban,” which sounds like “new urban.” The idea is to have a suburban community in an urban setting, redefining what living in a downtown setting can be like. Heritage at Plant Street will SEE DOWNTOWN PAGE 22

“It’s a gathering spot for these new residents to meet people with similar tastes and interests and for community events to occur. There’s always things going on in Winter Garden, so we wanted to have our own gathering spot inside the community.” — Jeff Kaizer BUILDING “ON YOUR LOT”, OAKLAND PARK & BLUE SPRING RESERVE

Canopy Oaks is a 58-home gated community at 12902 Roper Road, Winter Garden.

EIGHT HOMES SELL IN CANOPY OAKS The new home community of Canopy Oaks in Winter Garden recorded eight new home sales, averaging more than $800,000 each, in February. Developer Mason Simpson and builder Tom Garver, of A.R. Bailey Homes, attribute the brisk sales to the current strength of the West Orange real-estate market. “Buyers are able to sell an older Orlando home, make a profit and purchase a new home,” Simpson said. “Winter Garden is emerging as Orlando’s hot new address due to its historic charm, lack of congestion and proximity to services such as the new $100 million Florida Hospital Medical Center.” Canopy Oaks offers two-story estate homes with garages

for three cars and four to six bedrooms. The community’s “Sanibel” model was awarded “Best New Home Model In Florida” by the Southeastern Builders’ Conference. Canopy Oaks is a 58-home, gated community, and its models are open daily at 12902 Roper Road, Winter Garden. For more information, call (407) 488-5588 or visit CanopyOaksFL.com. STOCKWORTH BROKER APPEARS ON UK TV SHOW Chandra Garbarino, broker associate and certified international property specialist and global council member with Stockworth Realty Group, returned recently from London for “A Place in the Sun,” a 17year TV show in the UK that serves as the largest overseas

property exhibition in Europe. Garbarino reached a global audience of affluent buyers and networked with international real-estate companies from Dubai, New Zealand, Turkey, Greece, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Garbarino also took a trip to Italy to visit a number of real-estate agencies in the Portofino area, a place she knows extremely well having lived there. She grew up in the west of Ireland, and after being given the opportunity to move to London when she was 20, her travels started. Since then, Garbarino has lived in five different countries, along with her husband and children, moving regularly from her husband’s job in the cruiseline industry. Chandra and her family now have settled in Winter Garden.
