Oakland Observer implements Funding will help Oakland St. Johns preserve past, move forward irrigation regulation WEST ORANGE TIMES &

MY VIEW

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

This ordinance officially brings the town into compliance with the rest of the state. AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE COMMUNITY EDITOR OAKLAND When the

St. Johns River Water Management District changed its rules for landscape irrigation several years ago, all municipalities within the district were mandated to change theirs, as well. The town of Oakland, however, had an antiquated water system that could not keep up with the demands of twice-aweek watering, and this new ruling could have potentially run the town’s water system dry, Public Works Director Mike Parker said. Oakland was allowed to designate three different zones for irrigation on different watering days until its system improvements were finished. At their town commission meeting May 24, the elected officials passed an ordinance that updated its existing landscape irrigation rule to reflect that of St. Johns. The town already has been operating under the two-day-a-week watering schedule; this ordinance made it official.

KATHY STARK MAYOR, TOWN OF OAKLAND

W

e who have the good luck to live in the small town of Oakland know it is a unique place in this modern world in which we live. It feels like a step back in time with its small-town atmosphere and friendly citizens. A trip to the post office is an opportunity to see your neighbors and catch up. As nice as that is, we have worked very hard to keep it that way while understanding that keeping up with the changing times is a must also. Combining both in a way that preserves our

way of life is what we strive for. On that note, we have been working now for a few years on bringing sewer service to the town. There will be many phases of that project beginning with State Road 50, which is already underway for the commercial corridor. This will give us the chance to be prepared for the commercial development to come in that area, and we have done much work to ensure that when development does come our way, it fits into our community. I do have good news to share though, and I am proud to say the state of Florida has included $1 million in its budget this year for us to use on our sewer project. On the heels of this good news, we also received word we will receive a $225,000 grant from the Orange County Arts and Culture Board to build a history museum. This building will be on the site where the “Little White House” once stood across from Town Hall. It will be built in the style of the Little White House, and while it

will be a museum, it also be will a place for children’s music and arts programs and many other practical uses. It will have restrooms that will serve our adjacent parks, and we hope to have a small coffee/ice cream shop there, too. So if you know anyone who would like to run that kind of concession, please contact Town Hall. I wish I could say that getting this type of funding is easy, but that is far from it. Our staff has worked tirelessly to find these opportunities and to fill out the endless mountains of applications to even be considered for funding. Our community partners and local- and state-elected officials have also pitched in with support in various ways, and we cannot thank them enough. I am extremely grateful for these opportunities that keep this town moving forward in the right way. We would not be able to accomplish this on our own, and we are looking forward to working on these projects going forward.

The commission then passed an amendment to its 2015-16 budget. City Manager Mike Bollhoefer also noted 10 particular poles that would be removed in a continuation of city plans to get more wires underground and out of the air. CULVER’S A GO

Commissioners approved the site plan for Culver’s near West Colonial Drive and South Dillard Street, which includes a 4,253-square-foot restaurant and landscaping improvements on a 0.87-acre site. This is part of the Intram property at that intersection, which Wawa will anchor, and Intram plans three additional buildings on the site. LAKEFRONT HOMES APPROVED

The commission unanimously passed the ordinance rezoning Premer Property Urban Village — 126.94 acres around 17000 Marsh Road — to Urban Village Planned Unit Development. Plans for this parcel on the north shore of Lake Avalon include 107 single-family lots, 28.74 acres of

IN OTHER NEWS n City Manager Mike Bollhoefer announced Orange County officials had approved a roundabout agreement with Winter Garden as of May 24. The roundabout project would be at the intersection of Stoneybrook West Parkway and Windermere Road. n The commission set tentative budget hearing dates of Sept. 7 and 21.

open space, a 2.87-acre park and recreational facilities: a pool, a cabana, a neighborhood and butterfly garden, a playground, bike paths, a neighborhood pier and a lakeside dog park. Based on neighbors’ concerns of water access leading to reduced water quality for Lake Avalon, city staff had requested a buoy system with floats around the neighborhood pier to prevent motorized watercrafts from accessing the lake. One such concerned local was Jane Ferguson, who said most lots around the lake have been

well more than one acre, so plans for her estimate of 30 waterfront lots would not fit the surrounding rural community. District 3 Commissioner Bobby Olszewski asked Ferguson what she would prefer, to which her reply was a lack of lakefront homes. “If there must be homes on the water, at least make them more than one acre in size,” she said. Bollhoefer said several meetings on this project had shown many in the surrounding area in favor of it, with research showing plans were consistent with standards for the city in terms of properties abutting water. Staff said nothing in this development should affect the lake — not even storm water runoff. Furthermore, the controls in place would suffice and be an improvement over septic tanks. Beyond aforementioned measures, staff also alluded to shallow water levels for Lake Avalon at certain points of the year hindering any type of access from the northern shore. Winter Garden resident Bill Reese holds significant experience in the safety sector of public service, so the Winter Garden Police Department surely had a high standard to meet when he enrolled for its Citizens Police Academy this spring. “I’m retired from the military,” Reese said. “I used to supervise about 450 cops myself. The police department here is really good.” Reese raves about the 27 hours he spent in the program from March 2 to April 27. “It’s completely transparent,” he said of the experience. “They show you everything that they do, how they do it, why they do it, how they’re here to help and protect and serve.” He said that started at the top, with Chief George Brennan on hand to greet the class every week. “He’s such a great example of leadership,” Reese said. “By doing that, his leadership filters down to his lieutenants, to his sergeants, to his detectives, to his regular police officers — all of them.” Reese said he enjoyed learning about all facets of the department. “Our communications center in Winter Garden is so good that they are taking care of Ocoee, Windermere and Oakland (911 calls),” Reese said. “I did (K-9) in the military with my cops — I put

Church celebrating 90th anniversary Vineland Road Christian Fellowship is planning a weeklong celebration with past preachers, musical guests and an anniversary banquet. AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE COMMUNITY EDITOR WINTER GARDEN A

tent revival held in Winter Garden in 1924 created interest for a Pentecostal church in the area. Two years later, The First Assembly of God was built — and it still serves the community today. The church — which changed its name to Vineland Road Christian Fellowship in 2007 — is celebrating its 90th anniversary June 5 to 10 with guest speakers, musicians and a catered banquet June 10. The theme is “Giving Back to God.” “We’ve mailed out nearly 150 invitations to previous mem-

bers and folks,” Pastor Matthew Chester said. “We asked old pastors to speak at the services; four of the five who pastored in the last 30 years are coming. That will be special for the folks and those who attended the church while they were here.” THE BEGINNING

The First Assembly of God in Winter Garden started in a small wooden building on West Palmetto Street on land donated by Sam J. Williams. The Rev. John Hause pastored 17 original members and served until 1929. As the church grew, the need for a new building was evident. A two-story block structure was built in 1947, with Sunday school classrooms on the first floor and the main auditorium on the second. The top floor would serve in this capacity for the next 18 years. By the early 1960s, the congregation again outgrew the structure and the current facility on the corner of Vineland Road and West Palmetto Street was built in 1965. The south Sunday school wing was added soon after. The fellowship hall, church office complex and additional Sunday school classes were added in 1986. In 2011, the sanctu-

After Hause’s service, Fred Voight served (1929-30), followed by John Kennington (1931), Lee Smith (1932-33), David Houze (1934-35), Hubert Franklin (193637), Leonard Powell (1938), Sady Argo (1939-40), Pharoah Danford (1941-42), Maxwell Cloude (1942-43), Florence Dellinoise (1943-44), Voight (1944-45), the Rev. I give thanks to Jesus Christ for allowing me and my family to play a small role in God’s great plan for this church. … I am elated to see what the Lord has planned for us in the future.” Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@orangeobserver.com.

RAVE OF THE WEEK

MELISSA DUBAY Rave! There are still wonderful people in the world. I’m 30 weeks pregnant, and I had my 21-month-old nephew with me. We went into Chipotle (at Winter Garden Village) to grab lunch. I was holding him (he was hungry and cranky) and was wondering how I was going to hold him and carry our tray of food. The sweet lady behind me tapped me on my shoulder and said, “Miss, you look like you have your hands full. Can I help you?” I said, “Sure!” She then carried our food to our table while I got drinks and even helped me to get a high chair. If you are part of this group and reading this, thank you! You ... reminded me that random acts of kindness do still exist!

As soon as he could get his hands on a Kodak Brownie camera, Lineberger chased his parents around their Montverde home trying to take photos. At 8, he started experimenting with 8 mm movies. In those days, he had no idea that the time he had left with his parents was so short. When he was 11, his mother died of cancer. It was unexpected — Lineberger didn’t know she was as sick as she was. Then just two years later, his father died suddenly of a heart attack. He was sent to South Carolina to live with his older sister’s family. It was in the days before Walt Disney World, and his home in Montverde was quiet. He didn’t want to leave, but once he arrived in South Carolina, he felt the world was opened to him. He had just seen behind-thescenes videos for the newly released “Star Wars.” His high school in South Carolina was five times larger than it would have been in Montverde. A guidance counselor saw potential and invested time in him. He attended a summer broadcasting program at the University of North Carolina. At University of South Carolina — Columbia, he earned a degree in media arts, and he ultimately created a successful media career, including producing “Storm Clouds,” a made-for-TV movie.

time, invited Lineberger to come take photos of waterfalls with him. Then, he discovered the wood prints and put a photo on wood. The experience launched him back into the world of photography, and upon his return to Central Florida, to help care for his grandmother who lives in Oakland, he began to work with wood prints. One photo depicts cars rushing by the majestic oaks of the town. “Here’s these guys — they’ve been here 200 years,” Lineberger said. “I just imagine what they’ve had to put up with and watch us go by with our little attitudes. We put so much importance on every single second. They’re just standing there having to weather it all. I think trees are so neat.”

NEXT PROJECT

Lineberger is planning on working on a photo series depicting relationships between horses and riders. If you are interested in participating, contact Lineberger at (407) 347-9486.

He takes many photos of trees and local scenes and prints them on wood. Lineberger still works with video and video editing, as well as in the real-estate photography business. But his woodprint photographs have become a new passion, as well as his work taking photographs for the town of Oakland. Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@orangeobserver.com.

Lineberger, a fellow photographer, loved to photograph trees and thought the wood prints would be a great way to display his art. “I thought the neatest thing would be to have something of nature on wood — like wood on wood,” Lineberger said. Eventually, he tracked down the company who could do it for him — Mill Wood Art based in Raleigh, North Carolina — and it began a new form of art for Lineberger, who already had a long career in media.

And if you have been to an Ocoee High football game, then surely you have noticed the school marching band at halftime, directed by Bernie Hendricks. Both of these men dedicate long hours to the arts because they know how much it can mean in the development of children and young adults. After all, role models in music were critical to getting them where they are today. For McMullen, that was Kenneth R. Tolbert, the director of his highschool band, who encouraged him to attend Florida A&M and promised to help him pay for it. “We try to give kids greater access to arts with festivals and camps, and then try to raise funds to eliminate the financial barrier,” McMullen said. As part of paying it forward, McMullen and Hendricks will be among alumni of Florida A&M’s Marching 100 band in a special panel discussion after the Orlando premiere of “Point and Drive,” the documentary about the Marching 100’s innovation, June 3 at the Royal Palm Lodge. Director and producer Brandi Mitchell will join the panel and help to host a VIP event before

William P. Foster became director of the Florida A&M marching band on June 1, 1946, ultimately dubbing it the Marching 100 after beginning with just 16 members. Foster innovated more than 30 techniques, and his writings on band pageantry are considered the go-to for marching band directors. The band has been in films, commercials, television performances, music awards shows, Super Bowls, the 1984 Summer Olympics, both of President Bill Clinton’s inauguration parades, President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration parade and France’s 1989 Bastille Day Revolution Bicentennial as the official U.S. representative. Foster retired in 1998. Before his 2010 death, the band reached at least 420 members.

the movie begins at 7:30 p.m. Like McMullen and Hendricks, she graduated from the Marching 100. “I believe ... that ‘Point and Drive’ is the ultimate recruitment tool,” Mitchell said. “Our youth need role models … That was such a motivator for me, because that is the example I saw: You go off to school and you become successful. Growing up in Detroit … role models were the guys who went off to college on marching band scholarships ... just city kids ... (on) full-ride scholarships.” Programs such as marching bands have become more important now, because technology has provided more distractions that prevent students in areas such as Oakland and Ocoee from seeing a connection between hard work and success, she said.

From investing to advising.

“Definitely for that (Ocoee) community, it can solidify for them what’s possible,” she said. In Atlanta, a student accepted to the Marching 100 attended a screening with her parents, who had been trying to stress the importance of the band. By the time Mitchell hosted a questionand-answer session afterward, that student said she had understood what the band could mean for her. “That was in 90 minutes — they’d been telling her for her whole life,” Mitchell said. “When they see it on that screen, they get it … The beautiful thing is that ‘Point and Drive’ flashes back in time over five generations all the way through today.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

Straight into graduation O

(5/27/58 - 5/30/15)

coee High’s Class of 2016 left campus for the final time running, yelling and cheering during its senior walkout on Tuesday, May 24. Seniors, many dressed in T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Straight Into Graduation,” celebrated their last day of high school by running out of the school courtyard into the student parking lot, where things got silly and messy with rolls of toilet paper, shaving cream, silly string, Super Soakers and decorated cars. Ocoee’s Class of 2016 graduated at 9 a.m. June 1 at the CFE Arena.

CLUB HUBBUB

Woman’s Club of Ocoee members Pauline Mathius, Gail Daniels and Diane Bonanno helped serve at the group’s Creative Expressions Celebration Luncheon. The event was held May 12 at the clubhouse in Ocoee. Six Ocoee elementary schools participated: Citrus, Ocoee, Prairie Lake, Spring Lake, Thornebrooke and Westbrooke elementaries. The event is held each year to recognize fifth-graders’ creative response to a question posed by the Woman’s Club. This year’s question: “What would I do if elected president of the United States?” Each school selected four students, and they could respond with an essay, poem, song or artwork. Each student was presented with a certificate and a blue ribbon, presented by Woman’s Club education chairs Lillian Lasseter and Jackie Titus. Each school was given a check for $500, presented by Woman’s Club President Lynne Seigler, and a case of school supplies donated by club members. Members of the Woman’s Club helped serve lunch, which consisted of donations from Marcos Pizza, Hardees, Dominos, Publix and Walmart. ROTARY CLUB OF DR. PHILLIPS

Top Team kicks off 2016 Little League postseason District 14’s Top Team tournaments this weekend will be followed by international tournaments — better known as “All-Stars” — throughout this month and into July. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

Things are set to heat up on Little League diamonds around West Orange as the regular season for Little League Baseball has ended locally and postseason play is on deck. Florida District 14, which

includes Winter Garden Little League, Ocoee Little League, Windermere Little League, Dr. Phillips Little League and South Lake Little League, begins its postseason slate this weekend with its annual Top Team District 14 Tournaments. The Top Team events pit reg-

ular-season champions from the respective leagues against one another in a one-pool format. Because Windermere Little League is a dual-chartered league, a total of six teams will participate in each tournament. Dr. Phillips Little League will host both the Minors (9- and 10-year-olds) and Seniors (15and 16-year-olds) tournaments, while Ocoee Little League will host the Majors (11- and 12-yearSEE LITTLE LEAGUE PAGE 7B

Football championships may return to Orlando

After negotiations fell through between the FHSAA and the City of Daytona Beach, it appears the newly minted “Drive to December” may end in Orlando after all. A statement by the FHSAA May 25 indicates the two sides were unable to come to an agreement within the 30-day negotiating window. Now, the FHSAA will begin a 30-day negotiation window with the Central Florida Sports Commission, which bid on behalf of Camping World Stadium (formerly the Citrus Bowl).

oming to Central Florida from Massachusetts, there have been two big adjustments for West Orange quarterback Austin Burton: playing football in the hot Florida sun, and adjusting his timing to his speedy new receivers. And even after throwing for

five touchdowns in the Warriors’ 38-28 spring game victory over Gainesville May 27, the rising senior transfer wasn’t ready to single one adjustment out as harder than the other. “It’s both,” Burton said, laughing. “The heat is tough — you go from 40 (degrees) to 95. That and the speed: These guys can fly.” Burton’s strong performance was one of several highlights for in the annual spring contest. Tapped as the successor to newly graduated Woody Barrett, Burton’s acclimation to the program is just one of several storylines surrounding the program SEE FOOTBALL PAGE 7B

Lyston Barber Ocoee High rising senior Lyston Barber had three-and-one-half sacks and five tackles in the spring game against University High on May 20. The Knights came out on top, shutting out the Cougars 6-0. The performance capped a strong spring for the defensive standout, one that has put Barber on the radar of many college coaches.

What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming season? I’m looking forward to winning a district title, and that’s the only thing on my mind, really. That’s most important to me. How would you describe the team dynamic after the spring game? I think the team did pretty good. We have a lot to work on. We have new quarterbacks coming in, but the linebackers and offensive line did well. We should have scored more points, but we have a lot of potential, and we should have done better than we did, but we came out with a win, so that was good. Any plans for after high school? Hopefully I’m going to try to get a (Division I) scholarship, and if not, we’ll see where life takes me. I would like to go to UCF or UF, somewhere

in Florida, and I’d like to be a mechanical engineer. What’s your favorite Disney movie? “The Lion King.” I grew up watching it and thought it was pretty cool, and I like Simba. It’s one of those childhood memories. Do you have a favorite class in school? I used to like science, but when I got to high school, I didn’t like doing the chemical equations, so I kind of like U.S. history and the learning and knowledge that comes with it. It helps out in life. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Steak. You can’t go wrong with eating steak. It has the protein in it, the carbs, and it’s naturally good for you. What music do you listen to before a game? I don’t listen to music, I listen to speeches. I listen to Eric Thomas speeches. It keeps me focused more on doing what I have to do. Who do you look up to in pro football? Clay Matthews, from Green Bay, and J.J. Watt, from Texas. What’s your least favorite chore to do? Dishes. I work at Texas Roadhouse, and I do dishes there, so I come home, and I don’t want to do any dishes. — DANIELLE HENDRIX

re you a fan of extreme weight-loss shows? You know, the reality television shows such as “The Biggest Loser” that have contestants race to see who can lose the most weight in as little time as possible? For many, these shows may be inspirational. After all, it can be inspiring to watch contestants put in the work and be rewarded by losing 10 pounds each week, in some cases. How do they do it, though? For these shows, contestants eat a low-calorie diet and perform four hours of extreme workouts daily. Some contestants eat as few as 1,000 calories a day, all under the close supervision of a professional while additionally being disconnected from the outside world. Unfortunately, this is not a realistic plan for almost everyone else. But, in part because of the success we see on TV, this format has become ingrained in our culture. We think to lose weight we must eat a lot less — less than our body needs to function properly — and exercise a lot more. But what happens to contestants after they leave the facility and go back into the real world? A recent article in the New York Times reported many contestants end up putting much of the weight back on. Some contestants added 100 pounds to their frame once they returned to the real world. The question then becomes, “Why

can’t they maintain and keep these incredible results?” First, an extreme weight-loss program will wreak havoc on your metabolism. Dr. Jade Teta, a popular fitness, weight-loss and self-help author, said, “As you diet using the flawed ‘Eat Less, Exercise More’ model, you set in motion a host of metabolic adjustments that lead to greater hunger, lower energy, increased cravings and decreased metabolic rate.” In other words, our bodies perceive these programs and their fast results as a form of stress. The body tries to defend itself from such radical change by increasing our hunger, increasing our cravings and lowering our ability to burn calories. Teta goes on to say, “As a result, (eating less and exercising more) halts or even reverses your dieting efforts.” If you are a “yo-yo” dieter, or someone who has experienced cyclical weight loss and gain, you are familiar with this. You will eat less and exercise more and, to begin with, you may get pretty good results — but then it all stops. When the results stop, you may feel discouraged. You are more likely to give into the uncontrollable hunger and cravings, which your body has heightened to protect itself from the stress of the extreme change. As a result, you pack on the pounds again — sometimes ending up heavier than you started. Such programs are also hard to comply with long-term. Does it sound reasonable for these contestants to return home and continue exercising four hours a day while working a full-time job and supporting a family? Does it sound reasonable to live on fewer than 1,400 calories of food each day? I believe it’s impossible to stay the course when you’re starving, listless and feeling defeated. All of this raises the question:

What does work? If you want to achieve long-term weight loss results, here are four questions to ask yourself. These are the questions I used to break my habit of “yo-yo” dieting, and these are the questions I ask my nutrition clients to get them on the path of slow and steady positive change: Can I commit to an hour of yoga twice per week? Can I commit to 20 minutes of weight-bearing workouts twice per week? Can I take one day off and rest? Can I eat protein and veggies and have healthy snacks when I need them to keep hunger and cravings at bay? That’s it — no four-hour workouts, no extreme caloriecutting. This works because compliance plus results will equate to long-term success. It is the perfect balance of energy output with calorie intake. Eating well (note: not starving yourself) curbs hunger, bolsters energy and controls cravings. The weight-bearing workouts build muscle. And, finally, yoga reduces stress. This is an easy regimen with which to comply, and the fact that it is do-able matters. You can do this for yourself right now. Check with your doctor first, and if you get the goahead, start applying all the above. Start with one thing. Comply to it and stick with it. When you notice results, add the next thing and keep going. It will take longer than what you might have witnessed on television, but if you sustain the changes to your lifestyle, your transformation also won’t come with the emotional roller coaster of losing the weight and putting it back on. 2016 WINTER GARDEN SQUEEZE ROSTER AND SCHEDULE INSIDE

JUNE 2, 2016

In keeping with the emphasis the Winter Garden Squeeze are placing on “local” this summer, the team will recognize the success of its host school — West Orange High — June 7. The Squeeze will host a “Salute to Champions” night for the team’s game against Altamonte Springs, recognizing the success of the Warriors softball team, which won the Class 9A State Championship, and the baseball team, which made the FHSAA Final Four for the first time in program history this spring.

chise.

The number of players on this year’s roster who had need of a host family.

The roster for this season’s edition of the Winter Garden Squeeze reflects a return to one of the original ideas behind the Florida Collegiate Summer League – providing a place for local players to improve over the summer. It may also be the key ingredient to a successful summer. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

WINTER GARDEN When the Florida Collegiate Summer League originally was conceived, one of the guiding principles was this idea: to provide a place for local baseball players who had gone off to college to come home, improve their game and gain exposure in front of pro scouts along the way.

“It’s just very exciting to be back in Winter Garden for a third season. The hometown team has a hometown feel now — that’s what we really worked on since the end of last season.” — Adam Bates, general manager

To be sure, in each of the Winter Garden Squeeze’s first two seasons, there has been a local presence. Former Squeeze players such

as Andrew Mogg and Brandon Murray played their high-school ball on the same field that the FCSL’s Winter Garden franchise utilizes as its home field: West Orange High’s Heller Bros. Ballpark. Brothers Damon and Chase Haecker, who starred at the prep level for Lake Brantley, didn’t have to travel far, either. But there was also a heavy presence of players from schools in the southwestern United States, in part because of former manager Reuben Felix’s ties to that area. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, and local families from West Orange stepped up to host ballplayers who needed a place to stay during the summer. This season, though, there is a new coach — Jay Welsh — and a new identity to the team: local first. And after a rough go of it in 2015, it may just provide the right dynamic for victory in 2016. Turn the page and glance at the player bios for this year’s team. If you’re familiar with high-school baseball in Central Florida, many of the names and faces will sound familiar — actually, nearly all of them.

According to General Manager Adam Bates, just one of the team’s 28 players had need of a host family — the rest all have direct ties to Central Florida and a place to stay. It’s not only a positive for the players, who will get to sleep in their own beds, either. The local presence on the roster makes the Squeeze a much easier sell to boost attendance. Local players are bound to have built-in networks of families and friends who will be able to attend games. Furthermore, for the elusive casual fan, it’s an easier sell to go to the ballpark to support local kids than it is to support kids from, say, Texas. After going 8-28 a season ago, Bates and Welsh have been working hard to get the franchise back on track and position the Squeeze’s third season in the FCSL to be the team’s best to date. “It’s just very exciting to be back in Winter Garden for a third season,” Bates said. “The hometown team has a hometown feel now — that’s what we really worked on since the end of last season.”

that are largely centered around how the Warriors will replace a large and prominent senior class from the 2015 season. In addition to Burton, there is a new offensive coordinator — Vernon Mitchell — as well as several players, such as rising senior wide receiver Kyveon Jones, who are not new to the program but are being asked to step in as the next man up. Fortunately, if Friday’s spring game is any indicator, that process of bringing along the new faces in new places is off to a smooth enough start. After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, the Warriors scored 35 unanswered points through the end of the third quarter. After that, both teams took their starters out of the game in favor of reserves and junior-varsity athletes. That the Warriors led 35-14 through three quarters of varsity play against Gainesville — a 2015 playoff team in Class 6A and a regional finalist, at that — bodes well for an effort that is not your average rebuild. “We’re basically rebuilding, but the expectation at West Orange is to reload,” head coach Bob Head said. “Overall, we had a great spring.” ON OFFENSE

Although Burton’s name is attached to five touchdowns from his stellar debut, plenty of credit goes to the Warriors’ speedy receiving corps. Beginning with West Orange’s fourth offensive possession, Burton took advantage of that speed, first hooking up with Kyveon Jones for a 45-yard touchdown toss. That response to a touchdown strike by Gainesville was the beginning of a 35-point swing for the Warriors, with Burton connecting for another touchdown pass with Jones, two touchdown passes to NaQuan Renalds and a fifth strike to DaShaun Collins. “When we started putting up points, everybody got excited,” Renalds said. “Once Kyveon got his touchdown, I knew I was up next.” The dramatic swing in the Warriors’ favor was highlighted by Burton’s accurate passing and the ability of Renalds, Jones and Col-

lins to turn on the jets for yards after the catch. The offensive outpouring marked a nice debut for new offensive coordinator Vernon Mitchell, who came to the Warriors from Boone High in Orlando and replaced former offensive coordinator Collin Drafts, the new head coach at East River High in East Orange County. The West Orange offense’s success was more impressive considering the Warriors’ projected starter at running back, rising senior Darian Williams, was unavailable because of disciplinary action. Head said Williams had an excellent spring camp and will be a big part of the offense’s plans going forward. “We’ve got a lot of guys — a lot of guys who have played and a lot of guys that are fast,” Head said. “We’ve just got to get the ball in their hands in space.” ON DEFENSE

Although the names that have departed on the offensive side of the ball are more well-known, the West Orange defense has the taller task going into the fall after losing 10 starters from the 2015 team. Among those starters were vocal leaders such as Jeremy Samuels, Tre Rogers and Decary Croaker, who represented the heart and soul of the unit last season.

“We’ve got a lot of guys — a lot of guys (who) have played and a lot of guys that are fast. We’ve just got to get the ball in their hands in space.” — Bob Head, coach

It wasn’t entirely surprising to see the new-look Warriors – specifically the secondary — beaten on consecutive drives against Gainesville in the first quarter. “We came out a little flat,” Head said of the defense. “They (Gainesville) exploited a young secondary. ... I’m proud of the way the guys battled and rebounded.” After the pair of touchdown tosses for the Hurricanes, the West Orange defense recovered well, and the Warriors’ first team did not allow another scoring drive through the end of the third quarter. The Warriors allowed two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, being outscored 14-3 in the period, with mostly backup and junior-varsity players on the field.
