Summer camps cater to the individual interests of students.

Beat the summer blues For children staying in this summer, there are plenty of ways to be creative and try new things from the comfort of home. DANIELLE HENDRIX ASSOCIATE EDITOR

I

n a summer season that is anything but ordinary, many families have had to shift plans to adapt to the circumstances with more creativity than ever before. That means some of the youth activities your child looks forward to may look a bit different. But just as school shifted to distance learning, some camps and youth organizations are pivoting to virtual offerings. Here are some West Orange-area companies and organizations offering just that. FLORIDA FILM ACADEMY Winter Garden-based Florida

Film Academy is offering online summer camps and workshops for the first time. With the challenge of going virtual during a pandemic, many students have not been able to access the academy’s state-of-the-art technology in person since mid-March. The academy still is offering some in-person camp and workshop experiences for those who are ready to return to campus. However, the online mini camps give parents and children a choice of booking a half-day or mixing it up with a full-day experience. There also are monthly virtual workshops. “That adaptation to virtual allowed us to reach a new audience that we had not captured online before because of distance, because everything was face-to-face,” said Stefanie Robinson, co-owner of Florida Film Academy. Academy staff has designed programs to ensure students can

both interact with their instructor and collaborate with their friends through a hybrid-style format. Currently, the academy is offering seven virtual workshops and five online camps throughout the summer. Through these camps, students will learn the arts of creating movies, stop-motion filming, live animation, creative photography and building YouTube channels. “We’re using Zoom, so they’re able to see each other and connect,” Robinson said. “They’re still collaborating on stories. Sometimes the projects vary — they may be doing something individual … other times, their challenge is to connect the story and they have to figure out how to problem solve that, if you will. … And it’s all live in that moment with your instructor. It’s still the same small class size, and nothing is prerecorded, so the kids can engage and ask questions.”

KINDERMUSIK AT GROW AND SING STUDIOS Music and movement are essential in a child’s early development, and Kindermusik International specializes in just that. Kindermusik publishes music and movement curricula for parents and their children, ages newborn to 7 years old, and Kindermusik programs are available locally through Grow and Sing Studios in Winter Garden. This summer, Grow and Sing Studios is offering Bilingual Birdies, House Party experiences and even online tap-dancing classes for adults. The House Party experience includes online activities via Zoom. Activities include story time, sing-a-longs, puppet shows, sign language activity, instrument demonstrations, craft tutorials and bedtime lullabies. Bilingual Birdies is a foreign-language and music program where children can learn basic vocabulary and short phrases in Spanish through music, dance and puppetry. MAD SCIENCE LAB For the future scientists at home, Mad Science Central Florida is offering virtual camps that allow children to become astronauts, engineers, chemists and physicists. Mad Science has labs in Ocoee and Oviedo, where in-person camps will be offered starting in July. Until then, budding scientists can experiment with science projects at home. “All of our programs offer fun, hands-on science to keep your kiddos engaged this summer,” said Kylie Koscoe, Mad Science owner. Virtual camps consist of 90 minutes of screen time each day, along with one to two hours daily of hands-on and screen-free activities. Included in the cost is a science kit, as well as access to Mad Science’s own scientists through Google Classroom.

7

SUMMER FUN 2020

Mad Science also offers Camp in a Box, which includes 10 hands-on experiments, stickers, tattoos, activity sheets and a science journal, as well as access to how-to videos. And for those comfortable in hosting small groups of eight to 15, Mad Science is booking Backyard Summer Camp experiences for groups of children ages 6 to 11. ORANGE COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM Although most Orange County library branches are reopening slowly, there are plenty of educational resources available through its online kids programs. KidsConnect is OCLS’ home for kid-centered content. Here, your children can find library book lists, storytelling videos, information about the library, games and virtual programs. Tweens (ages 11 and 12) have their own listings for programs and classes, as do teenagers. The Informed Teens section of OCLS’ website provides teens with information about gaming events, photos, contests and opportunities to join the Teen Library Corps.

This summer, much of the children’s and tween/teen programming has been moved online. For infants up to 5-yearolds, virtual story times offer nursery rhymes, picture books, songs and stories. For older children, virtual events teach coding with JavaScript, animation with Microsoft PowerPoint, spreadsheets, music mixing with Audacity, and more. Tweens can learn budgeting with Microsoft Excel, conduct basic science experiments, learn to make a recipe for the best lemonade or even become a librarian for a day, among other things. For teenagers, classes will include topics such as knitting ear savers for face masks, building a website, creating video games, coding with CodeCombat and making DIY sugar scrubs and bath salts. Teens can also join the OCLS Writer’s Group, where they’ll join fellow writers for critique, discussion and camaraderie. And although in-person events and programs have been postponed, children still have the opportunity to participate in OCLS’ annual Summer Reading Program through Aug. 1. Families can enjoy streaming events, live virtual activities and online reading challenges. Participants who read 600 minutes or more can be entered into the library’s grand-prize raffle, where they can win gift certificates, bicycles, passes to local attractions and more. “This year’s Virtual Summer Reading Program features live performances for kids every Monday at 10 a.m. on our YouTube channel, and virtual events will take place every day on the hour, beginning at 10 a.m.,” OCLS officials said in a prepared release. “There will be events and offerings for all age groups, from toddlers through teens. Listen to a story time or learn a craft, watch a live performance or discover a new recipe demonstrated by library staff.”

THE GREAT

OUTDOORS

The Butler Chain of Lakes is a popular spot for fishing, boating and other water activities.

With COVID-19 forcing many to stay home, now is the time to get out and explore some of the best nature spots in West Orange. TROY HERRING SPORTS EDITOR

P

eople have been stuck inside for months, and it’s understandable that cabin fever may have kicked in. For the lucky folks who live in West Orange, there are many options to get outside for some outdoor adventuring. Although there are many different places to escape into nature (see our parks guide, pages 19 to 21), here, we highlight four local spots that should be on your visit list, including: Oakland Nature Preserve, the Butler Chain of Lakes, Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive and the West Orange Trail.

Bicyclists, skateboarders, skaters and walkers frequent the trail.

OAKLAND NATURE PRESERVE 747 Machete Trail, Oakland PHONE: (407) 905-0054 WEBSITE: oaklandnaturepreserve. wildapricot.org HOURS: Sunrise to sunset daily

When most folks think of Oakland, chances are the first thing that pops into their head is Oakland Nature Preserve. Nestled in town limits, the 128-acre preserve — comprising 48 acres of uplands and 80 acres of forested wetlands — offers a variety of environmental education and ecotourism activities for visitors of all ages, who get to

experience Florida in its natural state. Along with its boardwalk to Lake Apopka — featuring a classroom-sized pavilion on the lakefront — and a pavilion on the West Orange Trail, interpretive signs can be found around the preserve that offer information on different plant species making for walks that are just as educational as they are healthy. Overall, there are eight unique trails — all of which are less than one mile long — that allow visitors to explore different parts of the preserve. The .7-mile boardwalk trail is the only wheelchair accessible trail available. If you’re looking to cool off

from a hot Florida day or looking for something more educational, the preserve welcomes you to visit the Jim Thomas Environmental Education Center — modeled after a pioneer homestead. There, you’ll find water fountains and restrooms, as well as classrooms, offices, live fish and turtle exhibits, and the preserve’s museum and library. The center also hosts fun and educational programs for children — such as “Incredible Invertebrates!” and “Animal Adventures” — that explore the unique animals and plants that call the preserve home.

BUTLER CHAIN OF LAKES LOCATION: Windermere WEBSITE: orange.wateratlas.usf. edu/butler-chain

If you travel just 13 miles southeast of Oakland, you’ll stumble across one of the worst-kept secrets in Southwest Orange County: the Butler Chain of Lakes. Comprising 13 lakes of varying sizes that flow south toward Reedy Creek, the Kissimmee River, Lake Okeechobee and then the Everglades, the Butler Chain of Lakes has more than 5,000 acres of surface water and has a total of 32 navigable canals. When you combine the sheer space taken up by the lakes — the biggest being Lake Butler at 1,600 acres — and the cleanness of its water, it’s no surprise the Butler Chain of Lakes is a local hot spot for fishing, boating and other water sports. On Lake Down, the Orlando Area Rowing Society operates its facility that sits just north of downtown Windermere. There, some of the state’s best high school rowers — many of whom compete in national and international events — work on their form and technique as they ready for the next event. The nonprofit organization offers three different rowing programs for middle-schoolers, a high school competitive pro-

gram and masters program for those 21 and up. The organization also summer camps for all middle school and high school students. For those looking for something a little more laid back than rowing, there are plenty of opportunities for fishermen looking for the next big haul and for boaters looking to enjoy an afternoon out on the lake. Most of the lakes have their own boat ramps for visitors wanting some time on the water. If you’re into fishing, the lakes offer an abundance of opportunities, as they’re known for their plentiful batch of largemouth bass and other fish. And if you’re unsure how to fish the lakes, local charters area available from local anglers, such as Tim Bagwell — owner of the Ocoee-based Get Hooked Bait and Tackle owner — and Tim Martin, who runs Martin Family Charters. LAKE APOPKA WILDLIFE DRIVE 2850 Lust Road, Apopka PHONE: (386) 329-4404 WEBSITE: sjrwmd.com/lands/ recreation/lake-apopka/wildlifedrive

Looking for a way to enjoy nature from the comfort of your vehicle? Then the Lake Apopka

Wildlife Drive —located in the Lake Apopka North Shore — is up your alley. The drive reopened to the public Friday, June 12. Starting at Lust Road in Apopka and ending on Jones Road in Orange County, the 11-mile route also features a self-guided audio tour, which includes information about area’s wildlife. Along the 11-mile route, there are 11 points of interest indicated by numbered signs, which are explained via the audio guide. Visitors start by learning about the bird population before going on to discover the historic pump house that was built by farmers in the 1940s. From there, the tour hits on other subjects such as alligator population, agricultural history and restoration projects that have been utilized to clean what used to be one of the most polluted lakes in the state. During the drive, there also are designated “pull over” areas that allow visitors the chance to get out of the car to look around on foot. There, visitors can really take advantage of wildlife and plant viewing — on the property alone, there are 362 species that can be identified, including anhingas, bald eagles and great blue heron. If this sounds like the outdoor adventure for you, then

make your way out on any Friday, Saturday, Sunday or federal holidays between sunrise and sunset.

The West Orange Trail may be one of the most popular outdoor attractions in West Orange. The trail stretches a healthy

22.26 miles from the Orange/ Lake County line, and heads east through the towns of Killarney and Oakland, the city of Winter Garden, across U.S. 441 and on through to downtown Apopka to Welch Road. From sunrise to sunset, bicyclists, skaters and skateboarders can be see rolling through downtown Winter Garden and along the trail, and sometimes riders on horseback can be seen enjoying the more rural parts. Along the trail, visitors can take in different scenery, as well as neat spots such as the butterfly garden at the Tildenville outpost and Clarcona Horseman’s Park up in Apopka. Although many different means of traveling can be done on the trail, the most popular — by far — is via bicycle. It’s so popular, in fact, that there are two different spots for visitors to rent bicycles. At the Killarney Station in Oakland — located at mile marker 0 — West Orange Trail Bikes and Blades offers both on- and off-site bike rentals that start at $8 per hour or $30 per day/$99 per week. For road bikes, the cost is $12 per hour, $50 per day and $149 per week. To pair with its rentals, West Orange Trail Bikes and Blades also puts on its own group-bike tours for riders looking to get the most out of their visit, and the tours can range from two hours to three days. Meanwhile, down the road at 455 E. Plant St. in Winter Garden, Wheelworks offers its own variety of bicycles for rent, as well as trailers that can be used to tow about children or pets. Along with its bicycle rentals, Wheelworks also is there for you if your bike breaks down. It offers four different tune-up packages that will get you back on the trail.
