Ocoee, Winter Garden benefit from combined 911 call center West Orange’s State Road 50 corridor police now all share one dispatch location. WINTER GARDEN — Many years removed from sharing a radio frequency, Winter Garden and Ocoee police have reunited in their dispatching. After five years with the
Apopka Police Department for dispatch services, the Ocoee Police Department has begun a five-year agreement with the Winter Garden Police Department for dis-
patch services from its call center at the police station on West Plant Street, effective as of July 1. Officials from both West Orange departments have
been pleased with the transition and its effects, saying the first month has gone smoothly as a win-win. “We already dispatch for Oakland, so now you’ve got
the three municipalities all in a line being dispatched from the same place,” Winter Garden Police Chief George

Kidney recipient heads to college
C.R. 535/S.R. 429 interchange among local improvements
Makenzie Whitaker, who received one of her father’s kidneys in 2004, is leaving this week for Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.
Because she was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease when she was just 2 years old and endured a transplant at age 11, Makenzie Whitaker knows what it’s like to blow out birthday candles from a hospital bed and spend Halloween trick-or-treating along the sterile hallways. She knows how it feels to spend hours hooked to a dialysis machine with such a compromised immune system that she had to spend most of senior year at home with a tutor.

County officials seek local input on Lakeside Village Park This walkable neighborhood park will feature about nine acres of community recreation space.
whole process taking about a year, so the park could be open in August 2016, Connell said.
HORIZON WEST — The setting of Tibet-Butler Preserve befit the topic of Lakeside Village Park during an Aug. 5 community meeting involving Orange County staff and residents. John Connell, Orange County Parks and Recreation program development supervisor, presented a plan for an area of about 10.9 acres extending northwest from the eastern tip of Reams Road to Lake Spar, about nine acres of which should be usable for the park, based on conservation area therein. The plan is for an open area with amenities that might include a playground, picnic tables and exercise stations to be open dawn to dusk with neighboring families’ preferences in mind, Connell said. “The survey is online; that’s something that gives us an indication of what people would like to see in the park,” he said. “We make a priority list of it. … For example, if a playground became the first priority, that’s what we would

look for first. Generally speaking, our budget would allow us to build just about everything in terms of amenities we talk about at a neighborhood park.” Those common amenities include those aforementioned and open recreation space, paved walking paths, a volleyball court and a write-in option. Those taking the survey at surveymonkey.com/r/ LakesideParkAmenities or by contacting Parks and Recreation at (407) 836-6200 may elect as many of these options and type as much as they would like in a suggestions box. The survey also asks for the age range of children in the participant’s home and the participant’s age range. Locals wondered whether basketball or tennis courts are possible, but Connell said it was unlikely. Neighborhood parks do not have an organized sports field, reservations, restrooms or lights for a walk-to park with limited parking around its edge, he said.
District 1 Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd said the idea would be to avoid attractions for people outside the community and keep use within the neighborhood. “In my experience, most uses of this park are nearby families who walk there with their kids, play awhile and then leave,” Connell said. Citizens also presented concerns such as a lack of electricity hookup and children running into the streets, which could be addressed with low hedges along the park’s eastern border with Village Lake Road. Connell said the park would be internalized. Water access to Lake Spar was another citizen idea, which staff said they would consider. County staff said about $500,000 had been earmarked in county budgets for this park, covering at least Phase 1 funding, and more could be allocated to the park later. Construction would take six to nine months, with the
Boyd mentioned a few county projects in Horizon West in the realm of recreation, foremost of which was a sports complex on Tiny Road. “We have $17.5 million that’s been set aside for trying to find matching funds to help support the sports complex,” he said. “I currently work with a number of developers, as well as the city of Winter Garden, who has expressed interest in possibly participating in getting a phase of the sports complex moving. I would love to see a groundbreaking of a Phase 1 happen before I leave office.” A soccer field as part of a central, roughly 20-acre park on the Dorman Property next to the relief high school’s Ficquette Road football field is funded and on track for completion around June 2017, he said. Lastly, Boyd said funding is set to make Reams Road four lanes the whole way around within a few years. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@ wotimes.com.

Ocoee commission chooses mayoral election date The election for the person to serve the rest of S. Scott Vandergrift’s term will take place Oct. 27. OCOEE — At its Aug. 4 meeting, the Ocoee City Commission made official by vote its Oct. 27 date for a special election to replace retired Mayor S. Scott Vandergrift. The commission, under the leadership of new Interim Mayor John Grogan, also set Sept. 4 to 14 as the qualifying period for candidates filing for that special election. City Attorney Scott Cookson said current commissioners would need to file a letter of resignation by Aug. 25 to be eligible, but they would not need to resign until the result of the mayoral election. In the case of no candidate getting a majority of votes, a run-off election would occur in late November, Cookson said. Voting will occur at the Jim Beech Recreation Center and the Ocoee Lakeshore Center, a stipulation with which all commissioners expressed displeasure but supported to avoid any possible challenge to special-election results from adding other voting centers. The commission could address its voting centers in number and locations sometime in the future but not for this election. The commission also elected District 2 Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen as mayor pro-tem, which she will be until the Oct. 27 special election for mayor. At that time, Grogan will revert to both mayor pro-tem and District 1 commissioner. District 3 Commissioner Rusty Johnson recommended Wilsen for this role based on it being her turn in the cycle of commissioners, and he suggested she would assume that role from Grogan in March, when Grogan’s District 1 seat is up for re-election.

EDUCATION by Catherine Sinclair | Staff Writer
West Orange High alum commits to Teach For America Jordan Hudson will teach in a low-income community of South Louisiana for at least two years. Jordan Hudson, a native of Winter Garden, has joined the Teach For America corps of educators after graduating from college this May. Hudson, 20, is a 2013 alum of West Orange High School. She earned an associate’s degree from Valencia College before high school graduation, which enabled her to finish her bachelor’s at University of Florida in just two years. This means she is young, compared with most other Teach For America corps members — in fact, she was the youngest in her summer training group of 500 future teachers. “I feel very welcomed, and I feel like I can be very open about my age,” Hudson said. Hudson majored in criminology and law, with a minor in communications. Many Teach For America corps members do not have a back-
ground in education, but they are able to become certified and get ready for the classroom through the organization’s preparation and summer training programs. Hudson found out about Teach For America from a student in one of her college classes. She applied, and after being invited to join, she accepted because the organization promotes equal opportunity for all children. “I thought it would be a great growing experience and a good opportunity to meet a lot of people that had the same values as I did,” she said.
LAUNCHED IN LOUISIANA
Hudson spent the summer completing Teach For America’s training program in Louisiana, based in New Orleans. As part of the program, she helped with community events and trash cleanup in
the town of Donaldsonville. After training, she was invited to a job interview at Lowery Elementary School in Donaldsonville. “I cannot tell you how excited I was, because I’d already been to the community and I’d already met a bunch of people,” Hudson said. She “clicked” with Lowery’s principal, Dawn Love, almost immediately. “(Hudson) is innovative and has already offered ideas on different ways to do things at our school,” Love said. Hudson will be teaching fifth-grade math and science. Although she did not focus on these subjects in college, she feels confident in her abilities to teach them because of Teach For America’s training. Lowery Elementary has about 400 students, and 98% have free or reduced lunch. In 2013, Lowery was classified
as an F school, and behavioral problems were a significant issue. The school then began using the Kickboard Instructional Management Solution, which is a paired system of software and coaching that helps teachers set consistent expectations and keep students on task. Since then, Lowery has brought its grade up to a D, and behavioral infractions have decreased by 29%. There is still room for improvement: In a 2014 case study by Kickboard, just 55% of Hudson’s incoming students, who were then in third grade, were performing at or above a basic level in math. Only 43% of them were performing at or above a basic level in science. “Poverty is a huge obstacle for our students,” Love said. “Many of our students don’t realize the many opportunities
that an education affords them. “As a school, we explicitly outline the effects of poverty and plan as a team how we will overcome them.” Hudson has ideas for team-building activities she hopes will encourage a healthy classroom culture. And some of her lesson plans are already entirely scripted out, which was inspired by her mother, Kim Hudson, who is on staff at West Orange High School. “She is super organized, so she has trained me well, to say the least,” Jordan Hudson said about her mother. “I’ve met quite a few parents already, and they seem super involved. … I look forward to building relationships with families, along with my students,” Hudson said. “My ultimate goal is to cover content and make it engaging and promote a fun environment
WHAT IS TEACH FOR AMERICA?
Teach For America is a nonprofit organization that works nationwide to increase educational opportunity for students in low-income communities, by providing non-traditional teachers to high-need schools in urban and rural areas. The organization is a member of the AmeriCorps service network. Typically, members are recent college graduates and commit to at least two years of teaching. All corps members work full-time, and those in Hudson’s region of South Louisiana earn a salary of $30,512 to $45,184.

future,” she said. “It seemed so far away (while I was) going through everything and so impossible. … It’s really exciting that it’s actually happening and that I can actually go and be the person I want to be while going through a terminal illness.” A few of her biggest supporters aren’t quite as ready. It’s going to be a tough transition for her siblings, Kaycie and Gage, and her parents. “It’s bittersweet as a mom to work hard to get to this point, really just for her to survive, but I know she’s responsible,” mom Melissa Massa Whitaker said. “In this last year — and, in hindsight, it was a blessing — she was at home and learned how to administer and order her medications and basically be an adult. “Makenzie is so responsible and is so prepped with all the adversity she’s going through that she has a good head on her shoulders and is ready for the future,” she said. “I’m in complete awe of her.”
MAKENZIE’S JOURNEY
A life of medications, hospital visits and dialysis machines began early for Makenzie Whitaker. In 1999, her mother noticed her toddler’s hands and arms were swollen, and her chest looked thicker. A doctor’s visit turned into a trip to the hospital and a referral to a kidney specialist. Makenzie was diagnosed with a kidney disease called Nephrotic Syndrome, Minimal Change Disease, in which large amounts of protein are lost in the urine. (She was later diagnosed with a secondary category of this disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, where parts of her kidney filters become scarred.) Doctors expected her to be in remission in about six weeks, but that didn’t happen. By 2001, Makenzie’s kidneys were dying inside her, and she was added to the national organ transplant list. Family and friends held multiple events to raise enough funds for a transplant. Meanwhile, the little girl waited, ultimately having surgeries to remove one then both of her kidneys. Dialysis followed. Her mother and her father, Paul Whitaker, both of whom grew up in Ocoee, were tested to see if either was a match. He was, and in October 2004 the Ocoee firefighter gave his daughter the gift of life, for a second time. The 7-year-old spent the next year in and out of the hospital as doctors regulat-

ed her medicine. Melissa Massa Whitaker said that from age 9 to about 17, Makenzie’s health was fairly normal. She joined a hospital support group for kidney transplant recipients and became close friends with people who have had similar experiences. She has also learned not to be “weirded out” by the fact that she carries around one of her dad’s kidneys. “A lot of people in the support group have cadaver kidneys, so they don’t know where theirs came from,” Makenzie said. “So it’s really special to tell the story and know where mine came from.” At the beginning of her senior year, she wanted to participate on her high school swim team and went to the doctor for a physical. Instead of getting the go-ahead, she was told her body was showing initial signs of organ rejection, and her parents were notified that she could need another kidney transplant. “It was very stressful to know that we were going backward again and we were going to have to go through again what she went through when she was younger,” Melissa Massa Whitaker said. A transplant wouldn’t be necessary, but the teen spent months at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children trying different treatments to fight the rejection. Because her immune system was shut down, Makenzie missed most of her senior year at Tavares High School. Her guidance counselor and a hospital homebound instructor kept her on track, and on May 29, she donned her cap and gown and participated in the graduation ceremony with her peers. A transplant team at Tampa General Hospital will closely monitor Makenzie once she’s at college. Today, she remains on five different medications. In just the last year, the Whitakers have incurred $37,000 in hospital medical bills. Makenzie has set up a fundraising page to help pay some of the debt, and it can be found at gofundme.com/ makenzie2204. “People going through this sometimes think they can’t do this (live a normal life and go to college) because they don’t know what will happen,” Makenzie said. “But I’ve been through this, and I’m going to go for it.” Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@wotimes. com.

MAJOR PROJECTS In addition to the operational improvements around the State Road 429-County Road 535 interchange, the CFX has State Road 408 from Good Homes Road in Ocoee to Hiawassee Road as a project affecting West Orange County roads. Here are other improvements in Central Florida listed as major projects in the 2016-20 Five-Year Plan: • State Road 408 from State Road 417 to Alafaya Trail • State Road 528 from Narcoossee Road to State Road 41 • State Road 417 from Econ Trail to County Line • Westbound ramp modification from State Road 417 to State Road 528 • State Road 417/Boggy Creek Road trict 1 commissioner. “I know it’s a priority for Lake County, as well as a number of folks who have been working within the Town Center for Horizon
• State Road 528/Innovation Way • State Road 408 at the Interstate 4 Ultimate Project • State Road 528 Airport Toll Plaza demolition • Toll collection system upgrade • Milling and resurfacing • Bridge replacement and improvement on State Road 528 • Wekiva Parkway construction from U.S. Highway 441 to State Road 46 • Multimodal corridor rightof-way The estimated total cost of these major projects is $1.179 billion, about $230 million of which will go toward State Road 408 at the Interstate 4 Ultimate Project. Wekiva Parkway construction will cost about $423.7 million. For more information, visit cfxway.com. West with all that development that’s taking place there, too. one-half-mile strip that could be open by mid-November, said Ben Dreiling, CFX director of construction and maintenance. Construction and installation processes in this area will begin in mid-September, he said. “This area currently backs up as a p.m. peak,” he said. “Some of the problems that cause backup are not really related to the expressway but further down with the green time at the signal at (County Road) 535 and Stoneybrook West Parkway. This project takes care of the authority’s responsibilities related to that backup.” The authority’s goal is to provide safer conditions for exiting traffic with this project, for which Southland Construction Company’s $2.042 million bid was accepted, Dreiling said. That contract calls for a term of 180 days with a 60-day “flex start,” but Dreiling is hoping it will be done within 150 days, he said. Other improvements include milling and resurfacing, reconstruction of gore areas, relocating light poles and in-
stalling structure and overhead signs. For its part, Winter Garden will have crews working on traffic at this junction, too. “The widening of (State Road) 535 north of (State Road) 429 is scheduled by the city of Winter Garden,” Dreiling said. “Additionally, the Stoneybrook West Parkway is getting an additional right-turn lane; it would be southbound on Stoneybrook West Parkway. That’s actually going to be concurrent with our work and is going to increase the amount of throughput through the intersection and alleviate some of the congestion.” Staff reports showed this interchange as one of the eight biggest concerns for CFX among areas in its system. Staff also said it is looking at a project of about five or six years in the Winter Garden area as growth and the completion of Florida Hospital Winter Garden increase traffic in the area on toll roads. “You have all that traffic and congestion that’s up there along (State Road) 50 and (U.S. Highway) 192,” said S. Scott Boyd, CFX Board vice chairman and Orange County Dis-

CALL CENTER / PAGE 1A Brennan said. Based on the similar sizes of Ocoee and Winter Garden, the Winter Garden Police Department had an expansion of its call center to about double its previous size, to accommodate twice the staff for twice the calls, he said. “One of the biggest benefits I think that we got from this was the opportunity for growth within our call center by enlarging it some,” Winter Garden Support Services Commander Lt. Scott Allen said. “It’s given the employees the opportunity to do a bit more. That’s big for the city of Winter Garden.” Allen said the dispatch area had not been remodeled in about 10 years, so to have a detailed set of upgrades down to each member’s preferences in addition to the expansion was welcome. Brennan said he had to hire nine additional staff-
ers to compensate for taking Ocoee’s calls, but the dispatchers work more like one cohesive unit. “It kind of complements one another, because now, if Winter Garden is really getting slammed with a bunch of 911 calls and Ocoee’s not, the staff is right there to help out and start answering the phones from Winter Garden’s side and vice-versa,” he said. “They’re all in the same room.” But calls are not the only part of the switch. Ocoee police records and databases are now integrated with Winter Garden’s, which both Brennan and Ocoee Police Chief Charles Brown said would help them to track criminals who cross State Road 429 into the other department’s jurisdiction, especially via State Road 50. “If I’ve got a burglary on State Road 50, they’ve probably got the same suspects on State Road 50,” Brown said.
“So the State Road 50 corridor is huge.” Brennan said negotiations for this contract had begun last August, but the contract was not finalized until the new budget session. It has a small initial cost increase from Ocoee’s agreement with Apopka but becomes a wash later and, ultimately, could end up saving around $400,000 when including the software upgrades, Brown said. Brown said he had asked Winter Garden about this move before joining with Apopka, but Winter Garden was not able to do so at that time. For him, the biggest difference will be the upgraded software in Winter Garden. “The software increase we got was unbelievable,” Brown said. “Cops used to have to do a report on the road, bring it in, make copies, turn it in and then the records people would input it. And I was like,
‘This is 2014-15, right?’ Now they can do them and check them online — they don’t print anything. It’s unbelievable that technology left us behind.” One new capability for Brown is to see on his computer a live map of where all of the officers among the departments are and their status, he said. He said he has gained the ability to better inform residents of what has been happening in their areas, too. As far as the dispatch staff goes, the familiarity between the neighboring cities is amplified from their frequent partnerships and connectivity, as well as a ride-along day dispatchers spent with Ocoee officers, Brown said. “Now we’re just getting familiar with it, but the system is great; the dispatch is great,” he said. “I know that we’re going to get good service and … the best way to dispatch.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@ wotimes.com.

FOLA examines goals for Lake Apopka improvements PROPOSED PROJECTS
File photo
The Friends of Lake Apopka have formed a long list of ecotourism goals for the Lake Apopka Basin.
The Friends of Lake Apopka organization seeks capitalization on ecotourism opportunities. WEST ORANGE — As a result of the Lake Apopka Ecotourism Coalition meeting Aug. 3 and the Friends of Lake Apopka board meeting Aug. 6, these entities have brainstormed numerous ideas for ecotourism around the vicinity of Lake Apopka. “We have begun the task of developing a plan that will eventually lead to interesting ecotourism projects for the Lake Apopka Basin,” FOLA President Jim Thomas said. “We have completed a firstround list of possible projects, which we will start working with now. We have done the list, separating projects on the north shore marshes from the rest of the basin, and listed existing projects separate from proposed projects.” Synergy with municipalities around the lake — including Oakland, Ocoee and Winter Garden — and the attractions those areas already provide is part of the FOLA plan. These would also work in tandem with existing nature-focused assets, such as Oakland Nature Preserve and the annual Birdapalooza. FOLA lists Wildlife Drive among projects near completion on the north shore
of Lake Apopka, as well. Thomas and other FOLA officials also attended a full day of ecological presentations at a water summit Monday, Aug. 10, at the University of Florida Mid-Florida Research and Education Center in Apopka. Thomas said the first half of the day focused on water quality and quantity, and the second half was about ecotourism. Topics included regulatory perspectives on water, new technology and research, technology water savings, new municipal water technologies, birding, fishing, trails, hiking, biking and the north shore and Lake Apopka. At 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, the governing board of the St. Johns River Water Management District met in Orlando City Hall, where FOLA members hoped that board would support the development of ecotourism projects, some on district lands, Thomas said. Also, a bus tour of the north shore of Lake Apopka is scheduled for Sept. 17 to better understand the layout, Thomas said. For more information, visit fola.org. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@ wotimes.com.
FOLA has discussed many projects as possibilities and is in the prioritization process, Thomas said. “Some have a higher priority,” he said. “There are some controversial ones, primarily airboat rides. Most of us don’t want airboat rides, bunt some of us do. Acquisition of Hull Island is something we feel is a high priority.” Here is the list of projects FOLA is considering: • Connect West Orange Trail to Magnolia Park • Connect the Lake Apopka Loop Trail to the West Orange Trail on the west end and complete the loop • Re-establish fisheries • Schedule birding tours • Tours and classes on the history of Lake Apopka and surrounding towns • Eco-boat, airboat, seaplane, hiking and kayaking tours • New boat ramp on the west end of the lake • Restore natural vegetation on and near marshes • Plant native trees and shrubs on upland parcels • Control invasive plant species • Rehabilitation center for native animals • Camping area • Habitat for non-migrating birds • Application for National Wildlife Refuge • Eco-friendly hotels and restaurants • Archeological tours around the lake • Acquire Hull Island • Protect and interpret Crown Point ecology • Develop marketing plans for ecotourism • Signage plan • Develop webpage and social media

PASSION PROJECT
by Amy Quesinberry Rhode | Community Editor
SIGNS OF LOVE
A Windermere-based company that provides communication for the deaf community was started by a resident whose father lost his hearing as a child.
LIFE WITH EARL
Earl Brigham was born in Panama with the ability to hear, David said. He was just grasping the Spanish language when, at age 3, he suddenly lost his hearing. It never returned, but he learned to communicate by reading lips and writing notes and with sign language. To this day, he keeps a notepad and pen nearby in his barbershop to help him communicate with his hearing customers. David, who grew up in Pine Hills, remembers as a child accompanying her father when he worked downtown with longtime barber Ed Reeves. She occasionally interpreted for him when the other person had a beard or mustache, which sometimes makes it difficult for her dad to read lips, she said.
Amy Quesinberry Rhode
Melanie David uses sign language to chat with her father, Earl Brigham, at his barbershop in downtown Winter Garden. Brigham still can speak a few Spanish words from his childhood such as “madre” (mother), “padre” (father) and “abuela” (grandmother), but that is all, David said. However, he doesn’t let his disability hinder him in communicating and, in fact, he has shared his Christian faith for years. He has served as a deaf pastor at First Baptist Church of Pine Hills (now First Baptist of Central Florida) and currently leads a deaf Sunday school and preaches sermons at West Orlando Baptist Church in Winter Garden. David remembers him taking a group of children to a deaf camp each year at Bill Rice Ranch in Tennessee.
LIFE AS AN INTERPRETER
As a teenager, David worked with the deaf children

at church and taught a deaf Sunday school class. After she married, she was an interpreter at First Baptist Church Orlando. Today, she interprets at First Baptist Church of Winter Garden when there is a need during sermons and Wednesday night Bible study. “I love when the deaf person is getting it, that they trust you and feel comfortable using you as an interpreter,” David said. “I want that rapport with the deaf client.” So when a deaf person makes a request, she works to accommodate him or her. When interpreting, especially in front of a crowd, she has learned the importance of wearing a solid shirt, having been told by deaf people that patterns and multiple colors are too distracting. “He is the reason I do it,” David said of her father. “I want him to know what’s going on. I want (deaf people) to have the same opportunities and privileges.” David likes to have fun with

her sign-language skills and once provided interpreters for a performance of “The Wiz” with People’s Theatre in Orlando. They were matched up one-on-one with all of the characters; she was Dorothy. “I can’t just stand there and interpret,” she said. “I have to get into character.” Equally enjoyable is interpreting at comedy shows — or trying to interpret, as was the case at one show when the comedian ad-libbed and spoke so fast that she had to throw her hands up and take a breath. The audience laughed anyway. “The deaf miss out on a lot more because some things (like puns) don’t translate well,” David said. “In the English language, inflection is everything. For the deaf, it’s even harder.” For more information about JFD Communications, visit jfdcommunications. com. Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@wotimes. com.

ETIQUETTE Here are some tips on how to best communicate with someone who is deaf. • Talk directly to them even when you are using the interpreter. The interpreter is just a means for communication between you and the deaf person. • Eye contact is important and lets the deaf person know you are paying attention. • Treat them as you would other people. They are not contagious; they just can’t hear. • Don’t ignore them. They don’t want to be left alone too long just because you can’t communicate with them. • Deaf people can tend to be blunt sometimes. Just be patient with them. • Some deaf tend to take things literally. You need to make sure you explain what you are saying clearly. This is best done with an American Sign Language interpreter. communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. David said people call JFD when they need a certified interpreter for occasions such as a job interview, doctor’s appointment or class. Her company also can provide captioning for videotaped speeches or instructional lessons.

WINDERMERE — Melanie David has known American Sign Language for as long as she can remember. She and her six brothers and sisters needed to learn it if they were to have a close relationship with their father, Earl Brigham, who has been deaf since he was a toddler. They are all close with Brigham, who is nearly 70 and has operated his barbershop in downtown Winter Garden for 39 years. Growing up in a household where sign language was as common as the spoken word had such an impact on David that she has devoted her life to assisting those in the deaf community. She started as a professional interpreter, helping a deaf college student in the classroom for one-andone-half years. “I fell in love with it,” she said. “It’s a passion of mine to make sure the deaf have effective communication.” She then worked with a few agencies in Central Florida, but she was disappointed in the quality of the service provided So she started her own. Five years ago, she created JFD Communications, a company that provides

Several communities came together Saturday to provide backpacks and school supplies to about 250 students in West Orange County. The city of Winter Garden, town of Oakland and Orange County helped local children prepare for their first day of school, Aug. 24. Tildenville Missionary Baptist Church hosted the event, and organizations such as Orange County Community Action and Just 1 Book were set up outside to offer services and free books. Volunteers included Oakland Commissioner Joseph McMullen, Winter Garden Commissioner Bobby Olszewski, Sebrenia Brown of the Winter Garden Recreation Department and Orange County District 1 Commissioner Scott Boyd, who provided most of the funds for the backpack giveaway.
Six-year-old Rylan Walton is proud of his new backpack. He will be a first-grader at Kid’s Community College in Ocoee. WINTER GARDEN — One Winter Garden salon is hosting a new event just for dads and their special girls. The Scarlett Olive Styling Lounge will host Braids & Beer from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the salon, 31 S. Main St., Suite 1, Winter Garden. “A lot of clients want lessons on how to do braids and how to do hair,” salon owner Carrie Czunas said. “So we thought, especially for dads, that this would be a really fun dad/daughter event just to get dads and daughters on a fun little date night.” The fathers will learn how to do three basic hair styles — a ponytail, a braid and a ballet bun — as well as variations on each. They also will receive a gift bag including a wet brush, taming spray and hair ties so they can practice their new skills at home with their daughter. Beer will be provided by the Crooked Can Brewing Company, Winter Garden’s new craft brewery at Plant Street Market. For their daughters, root beer and juices will be available along with snacks. Czunas and her business partner, Stacey Regar — known as “Stan” by their clients — have been working together for 15 years. They met in a salon located in MetroWest and have been together ever since. “We come as a unit all the time — one of us goes, the other one goes,” Czunas said. She said that after working in salons for years, they never quite found one that fit their niche, so they decided to open their own. “We opened this place kind of just to make ourselves happy and have a fun, cool salon

The community got to meet an Orange County Sheriff’s Office police dog.
At Independence’s block party, there were opportunities to meet safety officials, such as Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Orange County Fire Rescue firefighters. Families learned about different methods to help keep their
neighborhood safe. Attendees also munched on snacks from a variety of food trucks, as well as free cotton candy and popcorn. Children enjoyed inflatable attractions and playing with the bubble machine.
Max Marisco checked out the Orange County Sheriff’s Office motorcycle.
The bubble machine was a hit for the younger children.
Orange County Fire Rescue staff helped children on and off the fire truck.

ince Julia and Francisco Enamorado bought a food truck eight years ago and started selling homemade tacos at the corner of Marshall Farms Road and Colonial Drive, they have built up a following. The truck is open weekend nights, and customers return time after time to get a taste of fresh Mexican food. But a few months ago, the couple opened a permanent taqueria, Ocoee Taco Company, as a response to the growing demand for their authentic cuisine. “A lot of customers are so happy for us, because they asked me when they came up to the truck, ‘When are you having a restaurant?’ But

Julia Enamorado’s parents owned a meat market in their southern Mexican town, and her mother was known for her delicious and creative cooking. “The salsa that I use here for the chips and salsa, my mother used to make it in my house,” Enamorado said. “My mother passed on recipes. That’s why our menu is a little different from the other Mexican places here.” One of the menu items seems strange to people who are familiar with authentic Mexican cooking, but many of
those customers have grown to like it. Enamorado calls it a “quesataco.” The quesataco, a taco with melted cheese, was what Enamorado’s mother prepared when some of her children wanted quesadillas and others wanted tacos, but she didn’t want to make two different dishes. So she came up with a compromise to please everyone. Enamorado’s mother died last year, and her father died a few months ago. But they both had been supportive of Julia and Francisco’s successful taco company and their use of family recipes. “They knew that we were doing this, and they were so proud of us,” Julia Enamorado said.
PERSONAL TOUCH
The sign that reads “Mi casa es su casa” makes it clear that everyone at Ocoee Taco Com-
pany is treated like family. “I talk to everybody; we become friends,” Enamorado said. “It makes me happy.” The Enamorados have watched some of their longtime customers grow up. Children who were in grade school when the truck first opened are now driving their boyfriends or girlfriends to the truck or restaurant, Enamorado said. All menu items are customizable to some extent. The staff is more than willing to make meals spicier for those who like it that way, substitute avocado for meat or accommodate customers in whatever other ways they are able. Inside the taqueria, the decor is notably Mexican. Tables are dressed with colorful, striped blankets, and there are a number of decorative pieces that came from the home of Enamorado’s mother.

We knew
we’d need a whole book to hold them all.” Her favorite part is the section on The Haunted Mansion, which is the largest and takes up 41 pages. Mike Neal is the photographer for all of their books; their 21-year-old daughter, Micaela, a student at Florida State University, assists with photos and research when she’s not at school. To properly do her research, Julie Neal, a former Disney concierge supervisor, said she spent nearly every day of seven months at the parks.

Mickey Mouse’s image is everywhere at Walt Disney World — you just have to be on the lookout at all times. Here is just a sample: In The Haunted Mansion, he is in the attic, created by plates on the floor near the third wedding portrait. At Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, he appears to the left of the Viewmaster in the queue. In Epcot’s Soarin’, a Mickey silhouette appears on an errant golf ball. At Epcot’s Canada pavilion, his shape appears twice on the left entranceway totem pole, underneath its top set of hands. And at Hollywood Studios, Mickey shows up as greenish-white moss on a tree trunk under the Ewok village platform facing the entrance to the Star Tours ride. Julie Neal said her favorite

RECOGNITION
Nearly every building on Main Street U.S.A. in the Magic Kingdom showcases windows with supposed business names. Among them: “Community Service Recruitment Center. Bob Matheison. Quality, Integrity & Dedication.” This is a nod to Matheison, a longtime Windermere resident who created Disney World’s executive training program. His window is above the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor and was dedicated when he retired. (A second window for Windermere Fraternal Hall lists him, Bob Allen, Pete Crimmings, Dick Evans, Bill Hoelscher and Bill Sullivan, the operating committee that opened Disney World. All of them lived in Windermere.)
WHAT’S NEXT?
The Neals are now setting their sights on another local theme park, and work begins this month on “The Complete Universal Orlando.” Publication is expected in early 2016. All of the Neals’ books are available in bookstores and online. Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@wotimes. com.

Back-to-school styles hit runway at West Oaks Mall
SPOTLIGHT by Catherine Sinclair | Staff Writer
West Oaks Mall hosted a fashion show Aug. 1 to show off the back-to-school styles that some of the mall’s stores have to offer. Students modeled jeans, dresses, tops, bags and accessories that are “in” this season and appropriate for class days. The event was in collaboration with Love is Louder, a campaign to promote the message that love and support are louder than any internal or external voices that try to bring people down.
Angee’ Ferrin was the featured artist, and her art was the first that guests saw when they entered.

According to Nancy Lillian Maguire in her published history of Ocoee, the Methodists established the first church in Ocoee. Prior to 1868, the congregation met in a small split-board building with shuttered windows. This log building was located on what is now a vacant lot on West Floral Street. A second wooden building accompanied the earlier wooden structure and was also used as a school. One side of the building could be removed, and “lightered knot” fires, achieved by burning heartwood pine knots nearby, would generate

Lacrosse coach wins professional championship Windermere Prep boys lacrosse coach JoJo Marasco was part of the New York Lizards team that won the Major League Lacrosse Championship on Aug. 8. WINDERMERE — In the moments after JoJo Marasco and the New York Lizards won the Major League Lacrosse Championship on Aug. 8, the text messages and tweets of congratulations began pouring in. The Lizards secured the Steinfield Cup with a 15-12 victory over Rochester in front of 8,674 at Kennessaw State’s Fifth Third Bank Stadium, northwest of Atlanta. The texts and tweets came from family and friends dating back to Marasco’s youth in New York and college days playing for powerhouse Syracuse. It was, after all, just his third season in the pros. And then there were the messages from Florida.
Winter Garden native Logan Gatza got a taste of international competition recently and brought home a gold medal in fencing for his country in the process. Gatza, 10, represented Team USA in the Youth Epee and Foil competitions at the 2015 Pan-American Youth and Veterans Fencing Championships in Lima, Peru, last week. On Aug. 5, Logan placed first in the epee competition, and on Aug. 8, he placed fifth in the foil. “I did not expect to get all the way to gold … it was amazing,” Logan said. “I was amazed that I won against (competitors
from) seven different countries.” Of course, the competition wasn’t the only unique part of the experience for Logan and his father, Jeramy Gatza, who made the trip with him. “We’ve gone to see different sights in Peru — we saw the changing of the palace guards, and we saw this cool archeological pyramid,” Logan said. “We also went to the beach. There was no sand; it was just like rocks.” Going on adventures in a foreign country was a nice perk for this particular trip for Logan and Jeramy, with the flight and competition schedule allowing
more downtime than usual. “A lot of times on our fencing trips, it’s just go, fence, get back on the plane and come home,” Jeramy said. “This one, we’ve had a lot of time to just explore and have almost like a mini-vacation wrapped into a fencing tournament.” Logan said his favorite part of the trip was meeting the competitors from different countries and making new friends — despite some of the language barriers in the Spanish-speaking country. It was his first time traveling abroad for competition and just his sec-

Stoneybrook Karate claims top spots on national stage WINTER GARDEN — West Orange youngsters representing Stoneybrook Karate recently brought home gold from the national and international levels. Competing in the 2015 USA Open Championship in Las Vegas in April, six Stoneybrook athletes went up against some top competitors in their age group from around the world. The local delegation won many medals, including several Junior International Cup and U.S. Open Kumite champions. In June, Stoneybrook Karate took 15 athletes to the AAU Karate National Championships in Raleigh, North Carolina. Among more than 400 competitors from the U.S., Stoneybrook brought back 13 national championships. Giana Piccolotti, 12, has been involved with karate for about five years and is a

WINTER GARDEN — Jackson Hodor already has the build of a high-school football player. At 6-foot-1, 187 pounds, the Winter Garden teen would fit right in on the field for most any high school football game this fall. Of course, Hodor isn’t a var-

his good hands at tight end and his work ethic, Hodor was selected to participate in USA Football’s National Development Team program and competed in the 2015 National Development Games. The local teen, who plays his youth football for the West Orange Bobcats, spent June 29

Everybody could make just incredible catches. … It inspired me a ton because I know that I have to be on their level … to have a chance to make it.” Hodor, who earned an invite to the exclusive camp by way of his performance at a regional camp in March in Tampa, said his favorite part of the experience was being around so many like-minded teens who also are passionate about the game. MINA TURCAN Mina Turcan recently competed in the AAU Karate National Championships in Raleigh, North Carolina, with 15 of her fellow Stoneybrook Karate athletes. Turcan has been undefeated in Kumite for two consecutive years and won gold in Kobudo, Kumite and Kata at the competition. She also competed in the 2015 USA Open Championship in Las Vegas, where she received gold and silver medals. How old are you and when did you start doing Karate? Seven and (I started) about a year-and-a-half ago. How did you get started? As a white belt, and I was actually pretty good! Why did you decide to do karate? Well, first I thought that I knew karate, and then my dad said, “You don’t know karate, maybe you should go to karate.” What do you like about karate? I like learning new things, like punches and walks and new katas. What’s the newest thing that you’ve learned? A kata of kusanku. It’s a brown or black belt kata. How did you do at the competition recently? (I won) one gold and a silver in fighting and kata. Are you ever scared when you’re out fighting? A little nervous because some people look really good.
Which grade are you going into right now? I’m going to skip second and go into third; I have no idea why. What do you like about school? (I like) learning new things. What’s your favorite subject? Math, because sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s hard, and sometimes, it’s really challenging. What do you like to do over the summer when you’re not in school? Mostly listen to music — hip hop. What’s your favorite TV show? I don’t have a favorite. I just watch whatever is on mostly. Do you have any pets at home? Yes, a Rottweiler (named) Cano. He’s 4 1/2. Can you tell me a little bit about your belt? I got it quite long ago; this next testing, I will be testing for a brown belt. What’s your favorite color? Light green.
myriad training and scrimmage exercises, in addition to film study. Players stayed in dorms on the university’s campus and got three meals a day with a curfew to closely mimic what college football would entail. “It’s a true experience of what college will really be like,” Hodor’s father, Don Desjardins, said. “There’s no moms and dads — you’ve kind of got to kiss them and say goodbye. … These kids are on a mission, and it shows him the level of these other kids, just how good these kids are.” Along the way, Hodor made friends, including a running back from Wisconsin he roomed with during the weeklong camp. He said players keep in touch via social media. The experience may not be over, either. Within the next month or so, Hodor will find out whether he has been selected to represent the USA in the International Bowl in February 2016 in Arlington, Texas, playing against Canada at Cowboy Stadium. Back home, though, Jackson is preparing for his final season with the West Orange Bobcats and school at Bridgewater Middle School — which he will attend after having been at The First Academy from kindergarten through seventh grade. Beyond his remarkable size for his age, Hodor works hard in the weight room and trains with Brian Stamper, a former SEC and NFL player, through Coach Tom Shaw Performance. Hodor said having size is one thing, but he needs strength and speed to match if he is going to be the player he hopes to be. “Tight end is a blocking position first,” he said. “You have to be strong and have to be able to push defensive ends that might be bigger and stronger than you.” That approach and work ethic, along with his size and hands, already have put Hodor on the radar of West Orange head coach Bob Head. Head, whose Warriors recorded their best season in program history in 2014, has observed Hodor while playing for the Bobcats and said it is the youth’s intangibles that stand out the most.
“Most importantly, it’s just his attitude — he wants to be a good football player,” Head said. “It excites me that guys that young are that excited about it. I can’t wait to get my hands on him.” Despite his success on the gridiron, including two state championships with the Bobcats, Hodor is no onesport wonder. He has played lacrosse for the West Orange Outlaws club team and The First Academy. Hodor said he enjoys lacrosse and that it has helped improve his hand-eye coordination and conditioning. As a father, Desjardins said he greatly encourages Hodor to play both sports in hopes that it will help him become a more well-rounded athlete. “You use different muscles doing different things in different sports,” Desjardins said. “I absolutely support multiple sports for these kids. … I think it’s a good match for him (football and lacrosse) and what he has to do with his hands.” Hodor is also an excellent student. The rising eighth-grader has been recognized by the Duke Talent Identification Program and had a 4.89 GPA last year at The First Academy. He has already taken the SAT and scored a 1,520 and was a mainstay on the Headmaster’s Honor Roll while he was a Royal. For someone with hopes of playing college ball, Hodor’s family has encouraged him to excel in school to increase his chances of achieving that dream — as well as his other dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. “(I tell him), ‘You’re going to get to that next level by grades,’” Desjardins said. “He’s got to continue to work hard, and he knows that.” It may be a couple of years still before Jackson Hodor takes the field for the West Orange varsity team on a Friday night. That doesn’t mean that Hodor — who is quick to give much of the credit for his success to his father and mother, Lisa — doesn’t dream about it, though. “I am tremendously excited,” Hodor said. “I’ve been to some games here (at West Orange), and there are thousands of people here just for a high school football game.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@wotimes.com.

For Marasco, it only served to make the highlight of his lacrosse career that much sweeter. “It’s unbelievable, just the amount of respect … everyone from Windermere Prep has been so amazing,” Marasco said. Marasco, who is also a middle-school teacher for the Lakers, said he was relieved to finally get over the championship hump after a collegiate career for the Orange that was full of close calls — including a loss in the 2013 Division I National Championship to Duke. “To lose in so many semifinals and championships from high school all the way up … it’s a dream come true,” Marasco said. “I’ve been training all my life for this.” Marasco, who talked about the surreal feeling he was encompassed by as the fans at

With options of fighting, form or weapons, Piccolotti competes in them all. “Fighting is my favorite; I’m more aggressive,” she said. “I just like doing that the best; it’s the most fun for me.” At the AAU Karate National Championships, Piccolotti brought home two gold medals — one in Kobudo, which is a weapons event, and one in Kumite, a fighting event. Arwen Bertrand, who competed in both the USA Open Championship and the AAU Karate National Championship, recently received her black belt. “I feel really happy, but Sensei (Tim Hilgenberg) tells me (earning a black belt is) not the end of karate; it’s just the beginning,” Bertrand said. With a bigger pool of competitors, Bertrand was happy because she would be facing more people and that the competition would be tougher. “It was fun for me because I had more people,” she said. “All year, I’ve only had three people, including me. ... And I liked it because in kata, I had more of a challenge.” Edgar Hernandez, who has been involved with karate for five years, enjoys the friendships he has forged through the international competitions. At his most recent competition in Las Vegas, he was able to reconnect with athletes
the stadium counted off the final seconds of the contest, added that two Windermere Prep families — the McClellans and the Darrows — even made the trip to Georgia for the game. Under Marasco’s leadership, the Lakers have improved both seasons — going from 5-7 in 2013 to 7-4 in 2014 and 8-4 this past spring. At just 24 years old, Marasco said those same players that were sending him congratulations are able to relate to him and his instruction on the practice field. “Being a younger guy, I’ve been able to develop some great relationships with the kids,” Marasco said. “These kids just have great respect, and they also are very hard workers.” And, though Disney is plenty close, Marasco said his basking in the championship will be relatively short-lived. After all, it’s back to work at school on Wednesday. Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@wotimes.com. he had met at other international competitions. “It was super fun, because I got to meet with a couple of friends from internationals ... and hang out with them,” Hernandez said. A unique aspect of the dojo at Stoneybrook Karate is that Hilgenberg lets older, more advanced students teach younger students. Hernandez enjoys this part of Stoneybrook Karate. “It’s fun to teach the kids and be with everyone, because we’re a big family,” he said. Hilgenberg, who opened the dojo in Winter Garden five years ago, studied karate extensively while he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Although he is proud of what his students accomplished at both of the recent competitions, he never lets them get comfortable with their position. “They did a really good job,” Hilgenberg said. “Do I think they could do better? Yeah. That’s my job as a sensei — to push them and to think outside of their box, keep them going and let them know that there are people coming up and coming to get them.” Along with the hard work that his students put in, Hilgenberg knows their parents put in even more to make success happen. “There’s a lot of sacrifice and dedication that goes in with these parents,” Hilgenberg said. “They take a lot of time and self-sacrifice for the kids to do what they do.”

WEST ORANGE WARRIORS + Progress on turf inspires Warriors Over on the practice field for the West Orange Warriors, the players know what’s going on nearby at Raymond Screws Field. As installation continues with the program’s new synthetic turf playing surface, which is expected to be installed and ready for the team’s home opener against Foundation Academy on Aug. 28, there has been a palpable energy increase among the group. “Every day, we’re over there watching the progress that they’re making, and we’re excited,” coach Bob Head said.
+ Offense takes group approach Replacing Dexter Williams, West Orange’s highly recruited running back who signed with Notre Dame on National Signing Day this past spring, is no small task. is another quality assistant on a staff that also includes some Ocoee alumni. As such, the Warriors aren’t leaning on just one back to shoulder the load this fall. “We have a committee (at running back) right now … they all have a different ingredient that they do better,” Head said. “Right now, we’re just moving them around to see who fits the best.”
+ Head excited about kickoff classic When the Warriors take the field for their kickoff classic preseason contest on Aug. 21, it will be in one of the most high-profile match-ups in the state that night. Rather than play a glorified warmup game, West Orange scheduled last year’s runner-up in Class 7A, the Osceola Kowboys. Playing the Kowboys on the road will serve as a tough beginning to a schedule for the Warriors that looks to be more difficult than the 2014 slate that saw West Orange go undefeated for the first time in program history. “I wanted to play somebody really good so that way it sets the tone for our season,” Head said. velop the players but also the program’s newer coaches. “It’s a big part of being a head coach — trying to assemble that staff,” Bullock said. www.ToolesAceHardware.com Visit us on Facebook for Special deals and Promotions: www.facebook.com/toolesacehardware

WEST ORANGE — The task of turning around Ocoee High’s football program is not the job of just one man, as was clear as the Knights continued along with their fall camp last week. Although new head coach Ben Bullock is the face of the program, Ocoee’s head man has assembled a dynamic staff heading into his debut season on the Knights’ sideline. With that staff, Bullock is able to keep more players involved during practice sessions. “It’s very important,” Bullock said of having a quality coach staff. “To make sure we’re getting the most (out of practice), you have to have great assistant coaches who can go off on their own.” Not only does Bullock have assistant coaches he trusts enough to go into individual position stations, but also the Knights have a number of coaches with credibility easily recognized by players. Jason Boltus, the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, is a current quarterback for the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm and previously played for the Orlando Predators and in the Canadian Football League. Boltus’ accomplishments as a professional are more impressive considering he played college for Division III Hartwick. “He’s a guy that can show the guys like, ‘Listen, I’ve been there,’” Bullock said. Nick Waisome has joined the staff to help work with defensive backs after concluding his career with the Florida State Seminoles, a stint that saw him win a national championship with the ‘Noles in 2013. “Nick is a great asset to us,” Bullock said. Also joining Bullock, among several others, is defensive coach Terrance Larmond, who came over with Bullock from Mount Dora. Larmond has a long history of coaching high-level defensive backs, including Waisome while he was at South Lake High School, and

FENCER / PAGE 1B ond time leaving the country, he said. Nevertheless, Logan’s performance while fencing also was noteworthy. “This is one of Logan’s best showings at a tournament,” Jeramy said. “I’m super proud of him — not only in where he placed but (also) in how he fenced. He got a lot of compliments from the other competitors.” Leading up to the competition, Logan had increased his
training regimen to four days a week and, as such, now trains at two different gyms. Logan still trains with Jason and Jenny Seachrist at Winter Garden Fencing Academy, where he got his start in the sport, but now also trains at the D’Alerta Fencing Academy in Oviedo. There will be no downtime for Logan, who is also an actor and competes in modern pentathlons. The fencing year starts in August and runs through July. This will be Logan’s final year competing in the “Y10” category, and, as
such, he has high hopes and a busy schedule ahead of him. In the coming months, Logan will compete in Baltimore, Texas, Atlanta and Orlando. Logan, who has been the points leader in the Southeast United States in his age group for the epee and foil for the past two years, has his sights set on new heights in his final year in this particular competition grouping. “He’s setting his sights on nationals this year,” Jeramy said. OCOEE — Early Saturday morning, local car enthusiasts congregate with coffee in hand to show off their shiny vehicles. Local State Farm agent Gary Merideth has been hosting Cars and Coffee outside of House Blend Cafe on West Colonial Drive in Ocoee for more than five years. The idea came about after Merideth noticed some of his clients had some pretty great classic cars — and that many of them would just sit and collect dust. “Partly, it was to encourage clients of mine to get their cars out and drive them around every once in a while,” Merideth said. On the third Saturday of every month, Merideth invites people to bring their cars out and enjoy coffee with like-minded people at House Blend, which is in the same
shopping center as his office. “The coolest thing for me is the camaraderie that has developed,” he said. “I’ve seen people, guys and gals, that have formed what appear to be really great friendships.” Jim Rothrock, a frequent attendant of Cars and Coffee, said this event draws more diversity than other auto shows he attends. “You go to a lot of car shows and it’s all about the same thing, it’s a lot of late-1950s and late-1960s cars,” Rothrock said. “But (at Cars and Coffee) you see a lot of different cars.” Rothrock drives a 1970 Mercedes SEL 6.3, which he said usually draws a lot of attention at shows because there are only half a dozen such cars in Florida. Rothrock agreed and said the social aspect of the monthly get-together can be a driving force. “(The event) seems to have developed a life of its own,” Rothrock said. “People go there looking for that special kind of camaraderie.” JR Ball, another regular of the event, said he looks forward to it each month. Driv-
ing a 2004 M3 BMW, he describes it as the “hot rod” of the three series. “Its a very pretty car and — more importantly — it’s very fast,” Ball said. When he first bought his car he said he did not know much about it. But, when he began attending Cars and Coffee he was able to learn from his fellow car enthusiasts. “Every time you go to one of these things, you learn something new or you see different cars,” Ball said. Ball said he enjoys the get-together because everyone shares similar interests. “It’s just a time to kick back, relax, spend some time with people you enjoy being around and listen to people talk about their cars,” he said. Leaving their egos behind, the event is full of people who want to share a Saturday with people who have similar interests. “There’s a very sweet spirit about the entire gathering,” Rothrock said. “Everyone is very outgoing and down-toearth.” Contact Emilee Jackson at ejackson@wotimes.com.
