The 2014 Foundation Academy Lions want you to ...
HEAR THEM ROAR By Steven Ryzewski A small school nestled along the outskirts of Winter Garden, Foundation Academy might not strike a passerby as a budding football power in Central Florida. A closer look at the school’s South Campus on Tilden Road might change that, though — what with the sprawling, largely undeveloped campus that sits ready for whatever growth the school might throw its way. You see, with Foundation, that same sprawling campus happens to share a key characteristic with the school’s football program — loads of potential. Where the campus boasts a ton of undeveloped land, the football program boasts a stable of juniors and seniors that is generating the kind of recruiting buzz usually reserved for Florida’s higher classification programs — programs like nearby West Orange High School, a Class 8A team with too many weapons and seemingly not enough footballs. Similarly, the Lions — competing in Class 2A, District 4 — and head coach Brad Lord may face similar dilemmas this fall. Foundation, whose skill players dominated the 7-on-7 passing league circuits this summer, has the likes of senior wide receiver Conrad Brown (who holds scholarship offers from FIU and FAU,among other Division I programs), senior running back Darius Irvin and junior running back Gabe Walker to key its skill positions while guys like Jacob Taylor and Quinlan Marshall — two impressive offensive linemen with recruiting buzz of their own — clear the way for them. In all, it’s enough to have Lord, who is starting his eighth season leading the Lions, feeling pretty good about his chances. “This is our best team that I’ve coached here .. [the] most talented team that I’ve coached here,” Lord said during the second week of preaseason fall camp.”Size is a big difference ... we just got a lot stronger and a lot bigger.” Keeping the door open to Foundation’s weight room throughout most of the summer seems to have paid dividends for Lord. The veteran coach, whose 2013 Lions’ late-game mistakes cost them a chance at wins against Victory Christian (Foundation lost 20-17) and Agape Christian (the Lions fell 22-14), can also take comfort in knowing that his senior leaders haven’t forgotten those losses, either. “We have a chip on our shoulder,” Irvin, who committed to the Charlotte 49ers in the offseason, said. The loss to Victory Christian is especially motivating for all the Lions who were present for it a season ago, as it would go on to finish as state runner-up in Class 2A. Knowing they had come so close to beating Victory is something Taylor prefers to approach with a “glass half full” mentality. “It shows us that we could really do it [contend for a state championship],” Taylor said. Which brings us back to the potential element to all of this. Simply by being in the conversation, and by having the stable of highly-recruited players it does, Lord’s program will increasingly standout as a possible transfer destination for players around the area — at which point Lord believes the schools’ other qualities will help set it apart. “One of the things Foundation Academy can do is get your kid into college,” Lord said, praising the school’s commitment to academics and adding, “it’s sort of like a family-atmosphere.” Irvin, who attended West Orange as a freshman, said he has enjoyed being a part of building up the Lions’ program. Taylor, meanwhile, stops to consider what a big run could mean for the program going forward if he and his teammates are successful in 2014. “Especially if we continue on and leave a legacy, then later on they’ll look at us to see what we did,” Taylor said.

Counting down the Top-10 ‘Must-see’ games of 2014 September 5
Dr. Phillips Panthers at Olympia Titans
You could argue that, given how long it’s been since the Titans beat the Panthers (a decade ago, in 2004, to be exact), this isn’t much of a rivalry. You could argue that — and we’d disagree with you. Proximity, passion and high-caliber players will make this match-up an early season treat. Both programs will have a chance to make a statement in this Week Two showdown.
Ocoee Knights at University Cougars
This Week Two matchup against the Cougars, a program on a clear upward trend that has made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, certainly fits right in on Ocoee’s loaded out-of-district schedule. Head coach Dale Salapa is excited about the energy and the demeanor of his program going into this season and this early season battle will give his Knights an opportunity to validate his enthusiasm on a big stage.
September 12
Seffner Christian Crusaders at Windermere Prep
A rematch from 2013, this Week Three contest will pit the Lakers against one of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference’s elite. Windermere Prep came out on the losing end of last season’s 47-42 battle, but will things be different when the Lakers — who have improved across the board — get a shot at the Crusaders on their home field this time around?
September 26
Faith Christian Lions at CFCA Eagles
Over on Orlando’s east side, Faith Christian played just its first season of football in 2013 — but that didn’t stop the Lions from amassing a 6-4 record. Faith Christian, in its first official season as a member of the Sunshine
State Athletic Conference, now finds itself as a trendy pick to make some noise in the budding league — and a big-time showdown for first-year coach Michael Bonneville and his Eagles.
October 3
Editor’s pick - Game of the Year: Apopka Blue Darters at West Orange Warriors
Much like the rivalry between Olympia and Dr. Phillips, there are some who would argue that this rivalry — which has seen the Blue Darters win 15 consecutive games dating back to 1998 —isn’t much of a rivalry. Again, we would disagree. This matchup, which a season ago was essentially the unofficial championship game for Class 8A-4, features two of the best teams not just in Central Florida — but in the state as a whole. The battle between these old time foes shifts back to Winter Garden in 2014,giving the Warriors their best chance in more than a decade of knocking off Apopka. If you see just one high school football game this season, make this that game.
October 17
West Orange Warriors at Olympia Titans
Don’t sleep on this midseason matchup, especially when a playoff spot could very well be on the line — as well as “The Fence.” This rivalry, which had been dominated by the Titans until the Warriors finally rebounded a season ago, will feature two teams with two different strengths. Coach Tom Paolucci’s Olympia program promises to be staunch on defense, while coach Bob Head’s West Orange squad figures to be one of the area’s most prolific offenses. The age-old question of who wins in a battle of great defense versus great offense will be front and center when these two meet in October.
October 17
The Master’s Academy Eagles at Legacy Charter Eagles
Entering its third year of existence, Legacy Charter feels good about its
prospects in 2014. Playing in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference, the Eagles will get a chance to assess just how far along they’ve come in this mid-October showdown against, go figure, the Eagles. The Master’s Academy is one of conference’s older program and will provide an opportunity for a statement win for coach Jarrett Wiggers’ program.
October 23
Wekiva Mustangs at Ocoee Knights
It’s hard to guess how any district will shape up by this point in the season — a reality that holds even truer when it comes to Class 7A-4. These two natural rivals on the map could be meeting for pride — or a playoff spot — when they take the field at Ocoee High School.
October 31
Agape Christian Saints at Foundation Academy Lions
How’s this for a Halloween showdown? The Lions will look to avenge a 22-14 loss from a season ago and one of these teams, if not both, could be fighting for their postseason lives in this spooky-showdown.
November 7
Runner-up - Game of the Year: Dr. Phillips Panthers at Winter Park Wildcats This could very well be one of the best matchups of the year, with a strong likelihood that the Panthers could enter this regular season finale undefeated as they head to Winter Park to take on one of Central Florida’s elite programs.

Getting the promotion in the offseason from defensive coordinator to head coach at CFCA, Michael Bonneville had one big thing in mind to implement as he went about rebuilding the foundation of the program for the Eagles. “Accountability — that’s big,” Bonneville said. “Holding each other accountable [and holding] coaches accountable, as well.” If Bonneville’s selling it, senior leader Robert Crawford, an important two-way player for CFCA, is buying it. A senior who is looking to leave the program in better shape than he found it, Crawford is holding his teammates accountable and, so far, he likes the results. “I feel like we have the drive — we know what we have to do,” Crawford said. “We want that goal of a Sunshine [State Athletic] Conference Championship Game. There’s a bit of duality at play as the Legacy Charter High School Eagles enter the 2014 regular season — the program’s third year of existence and second in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. On the one hand, coach Jarrett Wiggers’ program figures to have unprecedented continuity and familiarity with a group of four seniors — some of whom have been around since the first time Legacy Charter snapped a football. On the other hand, Wiggers, emboldened by the progress he has seen from his players in the offseason, is adding a whole lot of “new” — in the form of a brand new offense and defense for the new season. So, while there’s some variables that the Eagles are still ironing out as they prepare to open the season against Faith Christian, there is at least one good bet when it comes to Legacy’s offense — the Eagles will go as senior quarterback Colton Liddell goes. “He’s going to have the ball in his hands a lot this year,” Wiggers said. “He’s our best decision-maker. “We’re just going to try and trust him with the football.” Staff photo For his part, Liddell is excited about putting Quarterback Colton Liddell has been on the team at Legacy Charter all the ball in the air as Legacy navigates its SSAC three years of the program’s existence and will be a leader for the Eagles. slate — and hopefully setting a new precedent for the program along the way. “Being able to set that standard would be amazing,” Liddell said. “All we’ve got to do is just compete each game — take it one play at a time and we’ll go 2014 Varsity Schedule from there.” — Steven Ryzewski

Boasting some of the area’s best skill position players, Foundation Academy enters the 2014 season with high hopes after a disappointing campaign in 2013. A member of the three-team Class 2A, District 4, the Lions will have to win one of their two district games — against either Victory Christian or Agape Christian — to advance to the FHSAA Class 2A State Playoffs after missing out a season ago. To accomplish that, Foundation will look to balance it’s potent running attack featuring Darius Irvin and Gabriel Walker with a passing attack that features Conrad Brown as a receiver that has no problem going up over somene for a football. Brad Lord, in his seventh season atop the private program, is hopeful that success on the ground will help open up single-coverage against Brown — something he doesn’t believe is something that is all that doable. Lord also heapped praise on Irvin, who will play for Charlotte in college in 2015, saying he believes Irvin will start right away as a freshman with the program.

It’s hard for junior quarterback Parker Davis not to smile a little bit when Windermere Prep head coach Jacob Doss gets going and draws up a play. A common sight at fall camp practices for the Lakers, it is a reinforcing occasion for Davis, a reminder of sorts of what he likes so much about playing for Doss — a former quarterback himself at the University of Wyoming. “I love that,” Davis said. “He kind of gets what I’m thinking. “We’re on the same page.” For his part, Doss is pretty fond of his up-and-coming quarterback, too. “He’s kind of a [football] junkie where he studies it, he understands it,” Doss said. “For my money, I think Parker is the best quarterback in Central Florida.” No pressure for Davis, but he’ll be leading the way for a team with more size, speed and skill on the offensive side of the Staff photo ball than Doss can remember in all his time Windermere Prep head coach Jacob Doss will be looking to junior quarterback at the school. In setting the theme for the 2014 season from its outset, Dr. Phillips head coach Rodney Wells channeled the painful memories of last season’s overtime loss to Plant (Tampa) in the state playoffs, focusing on just how short —in yards — his Panthers came to winning that game. “My theme is ‘1.5’ for this whole year,” Wells said. “And the ‘1.5’ means do all the little things right — don’t cut any corners.” It’s a fitting credo for a team that needs to be careful to go out and take care of business in the regular season. While winning Class 8A, District 5 is, in the eyes of some, a forgone conclusion, the Panthers still are responsible for lining up on Fridays and winning the actual games before they can look to extract revenge. In the meantime, Wells championed how his offense is coming along under returning senior quarterback Rudy Norwood. “We look good up front on the offensive line — we’ve just got to figure out the running back and wide receiver stuation,” Wells said. While Dr. Phillips is always a safe bet to have plenty of speed on the perimeters, its hard not to notice some of the size working in the Panthers’ favor this fall — including three young men who are 6’3 and taller. Though not necessarily within their district, Dr. Phillips has some intriguing matchups afoot this season— including a game hosting Timber Creek and another on the road at Winter Park in November. Wells suggested the offensive attack and defensive schemes for the Panthers would remain the same at practice.

Dale Salapa, entering his third year leading the program at Ocoee, has a bit of a glasshalf-full demeanor entering the 2014 season. The Knights have had to deal with a few players transferring to other programs in the offseason, as well as replacing their defensive coordinator. But, the way Salapa sees it, departures just create new opportunities. “We had a number of guys choose to go elsewhere,” Salapa said. “Sometime God prunes the tree to promote new growth and I think that’s what’s going to happen. “Some of the stuff the wasn’t entirely positive has disappeared and this has been the most positive group that I’ve seen come through here.” Ocoee finished 3-7 in 2013, but as Salapa is quick to point out, that doesn’t tell the entire story. Problems don’t always have to be bad. In general, they are. But, in the case of this year’s West Orange Warriors, for instance, there does exist the proverbial “good problem.” The Warriors, as it turns out, have two such problems: trying to figure out how to get one football into the hands of their many playmakers, and trying to get the most out of two talented quarterbacks with different skill sets. Second-year head coach Bob Head believes he is up to handling the challenges posed by those good problems. “We’re trying to come up with a lot of different packages to get the ball to Dexter Williams, Jalen Julius, Mike Scott, Eddie McDoom — we have so many weapons, it’s hard to really just pinpoint one or two,” Head said. “So we just really try to come up with a lot of schemes.” As for the quarterback position, senior Gunner Ballant and junior Woody Barrett have been battling it out to replace Hayden Griffitts, who graduated this past spring. Barrett, a transfer from Evans, was thought to be the favorite by many outside of the program but Ballant, who has spent more time learning the program’s offense dating back to the spring (Barrett was not yet eligible to compete with the Warriors for the spring season) has emerged as the starter for now. The two have their respective strengths, says Head, with Ballant showcasing his ability to throw within the system while Barrett has shown he can make plays with his legs, making this quarterback dilemma a good

There’s a different feel as the Olympia Titans prepare for the 2014 season from a year ago. Entering his second season leading the program, coach Tom Paolucci says that the familiarity he and his staff now have with their team, even in spite of a few key transfers on the offensive side of the ball, have put the program in great shape entering the regular season. “There’s a lot to be said for a little consistency and continuity,” Paolucci said. “Our staff is back, we have 22 seniors coming back — so that helps.” Paolucci expects the defense to be stout, liking what he sees so far, but admits that getting the offense where it needs to be could involve a little trial and error. “I see our defense is going to be okay,” Paolucci said. “We’re going to do what we do best. Evaluating the districts
Road to state playoffs runs through district foes for local programs State championship aspirations are all fine and well — so long as the programs that have them remember that they have to take care of business in their district (or division, for Sunshine State Athletic Conference members) first. Here are our breakdowns of each district or division with a local team competing in it.
Class 8A, District 4
Apopka (2013 champion) Evans Olympia West Orange (2013 runner-up) Quick hit: Apopka’s last district loss was in 2012 to Olympia. Prediction: 2014 will look a lot like 2013 — Blue Darters take district, Warriors finish as runner-up.
Class 8A, District 5
Boone (2013 runner-up) Colonial Cypress Creek Dr. Phillips (2013 champion) Freedom Quick hit: Dr. Phillips outscored district opponents 207-52 in 2013. Prediction: Panthers cruise to district title and Boone edges Freedom for runner-up playoff spot.
In addition to being natural rivals geographically, the added element of being in the same district (Class 8A, District 4) heightens the importance of the annual game between West Orange and Olympia.
Class 7A, District 4
East Ridge East River Lake Howell Oak Ridge (2013 runner-up) Ocoee Wekiva Winter Springs (2013 champion) Quick hit: This district figures to be as wide-open competitively as it is geographically — spans three counties (Orange, Lake, Seminole). Prediction: Will be close, but Oak Ridge takes district with superior firepower, Wekiva finishes as runner-up.
Class 2A, District 4
Agape (2013 runner-up) Foundation Academy Victory Christian (2013 champion) Quick hit: Foundation had eventual district champion
and state runner-up Victory Christian down in 2013 before letting game slip away. Prediction: Foundation wins both games and takes district, toss-up between Agape and Victory for runnerup playoff spot.
Sunshine State Athletic Conference Coastal League, Beach Division
Faith Christian Academy International Community School Merritt Island Christian Orlando Christian Prep The Master’s Academy Central Florida Christian Academy Legacy Charter Quick hit: Faith Christian is only in its second season of existence but figures to be among SSAC’s elite in
2014. Prediction: Faith Christian dominates competition en route to taking division crown.
Coral League, Bay Division
All Saints Academy (provisional member) Bishop McLaughlin Catholic Lake Mary Prep (provisional member) Keswick Christian Academy Santa Fe Catholic Seffner Christian Academy St. Stephen’s Episcopal Windermere Prep Quick hit: Seffner Christian went 8-2 overall a season ago and 5-1 against SSAC opponents. Prediction: Windermere Prep uses its depth and size to upset perennial-powerhouse Seffner and takes division.

Breaking down the competition
Around Orange County: Metro Conference team-by-team previews Apopka Blue Darters
Class, District: Class 8A-4 2013 recap: Finished 13-1, fell in Class 8A State Championship to South Dade, foiling back-to-back state titles attempt. Outlook: Led by star senior offensive lineman Martez Ivey, the Blue Darters are stacked once again and figure to score plenty of points.
Boone Braves
Class, District: Class 8A-5 2013 recap: Went 4-7 after 0-6 start, lost in first round of state playoffs. Outlook: In second season under Andy Johnson, the Braves should be improved but still face arguably the toughest schedule in the state.
Colonial Grenadiers
Class, District: Class 8A-5 2013 recap: Finished 2-8. Outlook: With Dr. Phillips and Boone also in 8A-5, the Grenadiers face uphill battle in making playoffs. Have not finished .500 or better since 2006.
Cypress Creek Bears
Class, District: Class 8A-5 2013 recap: Finished 1-9. Outlook: Similar to Colonial, Bears have had trouble gaining traction in tough district with Dr. Phillips and Boone. Seeking first winning season since 2004.
East River Falcons
Class, District: Class 7A-4 2013 recap: Finished 1-9. Outlook: Young program looking to gain some traction, East River will lean heavily on senior quarterback Tanner Hearn and potent defensive backfield combo of Tyler Castillo and Shelton Lewis.
Edgewater Eagles
Class, District: Class 6A-10 2013 recap: Finished 1-9. Outlook: The Eagles had an uncharacteristic down
year in 2013 but will look to bounce back this fall. Edgewater features a talented trio of juniors (Cortez Pembleton, QB; Joe Clark, RB; Craig Rucker, ATH) that could help program return to contention.
Evans Trojans
Class, District: Class 8A-4 2013 recap: Finished 1-9. Outlook: A disappointing 2013 season and offseason transfers make the Trojans a big underdog in loaded 8A-4.
Freedom Patriots
Class, District: Class 8A-5 2013 recap: Finished 3-7. Outlook: The Patriots suffered a down year in 2013 after making the playoffs in 2012 and will look to rebound in 2014. District matchup against Boone will likely decide runner-up in 8A-5.
Jones Tigers
Class, District: Class 4A-5 2013 recap: Finished 2-8. Outlook: After making the playoffs in 2012, the Tigers suffered a rough go of it in 2013. Standout linebacker Withney Simon figures to key Jones’ defense.
Lake Nona Lions
Class, District: Class 7A-6 2013 recap: Finished 8-3, fell in first round of state playoffs. Outlook: The Lions are one of Central Florida’s best up-and-coming programs and have won eight games in consecutive seasons. Lake Nona returns potent senior duo of quarterback Tucker Isreal (Clemson-commit) and wide receiver Deondre Farrier to anchor the Lions’ offense.
Oak Ridge Pioneers
Class, District: Class 7A-4 2013 recap: Completed season with 8-4 record, lost in second round of state playoffs. Outlook: The Pioneers have a TON of players who
will be playing college football within the next two years. Loaded with talented athletes, the onus will be on the Oak Ridge staff to get the most out of this roster.
Timber Creek Wolves
Class, District: Class 8A-3 2013 recap: Finished 6-4. Outlook: The Wolves had high expectations in 2013, but ended up just missing the state playoffs in a loaded district. The good news for Timber Creek is it still has one of the premier running backs in the country — senior Jacques Patrick.
University Cougars
Class, District: Class 8A-3 2013 recap: Finished 8-4, lost to Apopka in first round of state playoffs. Outlook: The Cougars are another of Central Florida’s up-and-coming programs after years of mediocrity. University has won eight games in each of the past two seasons — and has been eliminated by juggarnaut Apopka to end each campaign. Senior running back Aaron Gipson will lead the Cougars’ offense in 2014.
Wekiva Mustangs
Class, District: Class 7A-4 2013 recap: Finished 5-5. Outlook: Primed for a breakout year in 2013, the Mustangs were thwarted by Winter Springs, whose worst-to-first campaign was one of the year’s biggest suprises. Do-it-all senior quarterback Bart Bell figures to lead Wekiva in the quest for 7A-4 crown.
Winter Park Wildcats
Class, District: Class 8A-3 2013 recap: Finished 9-3, fell in second round of state playoffs to Apopka. Outlook: The Wildcats emerged out of one of the region’s toughest districts a season ago and, with talented athletes returning on both sides of the ball, Winter Park figures to contend again this fall in 7A-4. — Steven Ryzewski

College Football
Following history-making season with wins an important task for UCF By Steven Ryzewski
Sure, UCF had its best season ever in 2013, capped by a 52-42 upset win over Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl. That doesn’t mean the Knights can stand pat, though. With change brewing in college football and UCF not playing in a “Power Five” conference (SEC, ACC, Big-10, Big-12, Pac-12), winning is more important than ever for the Knights. As those leagues move toward more incentives for athletes (full-cost scholarships, increased health insurance coverage, etc.) — incentives that will cost programs more money — UCF will increasingly look to donors and fan support to try and help keep pace with the “old money” programs of the game. That will be much easier to do if the Knights — who finished 2013 ranked No. 10 nationally — continue to win and be seen as arguably the best program in the country outside of those five conferences.
What to watch for:
The Knights’ defense will be solid — it’s usually a safe bet with any team coached by head coach George O’Leary. Where the biggest intrigue lies is on offense. UCF has named Pete DiNovo, a redshirt freshman, as its successor to Blake Bortles (the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft and eventual starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars). DiNovo’s ability to lead the Knights’ stable of talented receivers and running backs, which averaged 34.6 points per game last season, will be a huge factor in the team’s success in 2014.
Can’t miss home game:
Compared to a season ago, when UCF welcomed in South Carolina and arch-rival USF, this season’s home slate lacks a bit of the luster of that from 2013. Still, there is at least one big-time home game college football fans won’t want to miss at Bright House Networks Stadium — when the Knights host BYU on Thursday, Oct. 9. This matchup features two of the best programs in the country outside of the “Power-5” conferences and, as such, will air to a national audience on ESPN.
National exposure:

Pete DiNovo has been tapped as the new quarterback for the UCF Knights.
Of UCF’s 12 regular season contests, eight of them will be broadcast to a national audience. Games against Houston (Oct. 2), BYU (Oct. 9), and East Carolina (Dec. 4) will air on ESPN.The Knights’ opener in Ireland against Penn State on Aug. 30 will air on ESPN2, as will a game on Nov. 14 against Tulsa. UCF’s biggest rivalry game, a “Black Friday” showdown with the USF Bulls in Tampa, will air nationally on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. The Knights’ contest at Missouri on Sept. 13 can be seen on the SEC Network. UCF will host Bethune-Cookman in its home-opener on ESPN3.
