Why is
PET DENTAL HEALTH So Important?
Periodontal disease is the most common disorder among pets nationwide, affecting more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats by age three. When it’s left untreated, an infection can spread to the heart, kidneys and liver, causing significant organ issues.

NEWLY ELECTED ROA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
T
he annual meeting and election of the Board of Directors for the Residential Owners Association Inc. was held Aug. 13. Congratulations to Kenneth Roberts and Kirsten Blum, who were elected to a second term, and to Dale Petersen and Tiffani Lindstrom, who were elected for a two-year term. For 2019-20, Kai Fu will serve as president, Matt Williams as vice president, Kirsten Blum as secretary and Tiffani Lindstrom as treasurer. Dale Petersen and Michael Cummings are directors. Sincere thanks go out to Denny O’Neil and Steve Thomas, who did not run for another term. Steve served a two-year term, helped with the finalization of the Strategic Plan and spearheaded the effort to hire a lifestyle director to plan more events for the homeowners in Baldwin Park. Denny was honored during the meeting for his 12 years of service on both the ROA and Joint Committee boards. Denny was the first president of the ROA Board of Directors and served in that position for 12 years. Denny has been a great advocate for the Baldwin Park community and has served the homeowners well. In his role as ROA president, Denny also served on the Joint Committee and helped grow the annual holiday and Independence Day events to the acclaimed activities they are today. He was instrumental in forming the traffic and neighborhood watch committees, has informed his neighbors at the new resident orientations, and has written monthly articles for Baldwin Park Living magazine, among other things. You can thank him for the recent installation of the flagpole in Harbor Park, a project that was dear to his heart! While
he is retiring from the board, he is not retiring from the neighborhood he so enjoys. You will still see him around, walking his two dogs and always ready for a conversation. Thank you, Denny, for all you have done for the community. To see more pictures from Denny’s last board meeting, visit facebook.com/BaldwinParkWhatsHappening. NEWLY ELECTED COA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

WHAT A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD WE LIVE IN!
More tales from Penn’s Woods — neighborhood markets S
usan Comisky suggested that I write about my time as president of the ROA Board of Directors (12 years), the changes, the challenges, etc. Here is the summary: I viewed my mission as to maintain the neighborhood and keep assessments low and the neighborhood great. Period. The neighborhood market was pretty common until after World War II, when suburbs made up of just homes, with no markets (or bars), became predominant. When I say neighborhood market, I’m not talking about stores the size of a Walmart Neighborhood Market. My experience with neighborhood markets was with those that existed in my hometown in Pennsylvania. The town also had grocery stores like Loblaws, Kroger, A&P, etc. But, when I was a kid, there also were more than 15 neighborhood markets scattered about the neighborhoods in town. They mostly served the local neighborhood. Usually, the markets were part of the ground floor of a house adjacent to the public sidewalk, but some were set back a little from the sidewalk because the home had a front yard. Most of these markets were more like a 7-Eleven-type convenience store with limited groceries, laundry detergents, candy, soft drinks, etc. Others were more like a small version of a grocery store and usually had a meat counter. I think most were family owned. As a young kid I used to frequent a neighborhood market on the corner of West First and Innis streets, because it was near my elementary
12
DENNY O’NEIL FORMER BALDWIN PARK RESIDENTIAL OWNERS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT school, Innis Street Elementary School. Like many other kids, I had maybe a nickel or dime to spend at the market. Back in those days, a nickel was a lot of money. Once in the market, I would go right to the candy counter where all kinds of candies were displayed. With that nickel, I could buy penny candies, like 2-inch-wide strips of white paper with neatly arranged, different-colored candy bumps on them. You peeled off the bumps and ate them. Yeah! Sugar! Also, I could get a little wax, Coke bottle-shaped vial of sugar water. Yeah! Sugar! Maybe some wax lips or bubble gum cards — all that for a nickel! I could get a whole candy bar (Milky Way, Snickers, Mounds, whatever my heart desired) for a nickel. Try that now. Fast forward to high school. While attending high school and until my friends got cars, I would walk home with one of my friends, Jerry Espy, who, like me, lived about 2 miles from the school. (Yes, 2 miles through snow storms in freezing weather.) Back in those days before backpacks, we had to carry our textbooks (usually
BALDWIN PARK LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2019
three to five books) tucked under our arms. Virtually every walk home in the snow, Jerry and I would try to knock each other’s books loose. Once loose, the books fell into the snow. We’d laugh and brush the snow out of our books and walk a little and then do it all over again and again, the whole way home. Jerry’s family owned Espy’s Neighborhood Market, located two houses down from their home. It was a second source of income for their family. Jerry would wear a shirt and tie to school every day because he had to work at their store immediately after school. Sitting at lunch in the school cafeteria every day, one of my other friends, Jeff, would grab Jerry’s tie and try to figure out what Jerry had for breakfast that day. He had to be quick, because Jerry wasn’t too happy about Jeff’s efforts. (Usually Jerry had bacon — visible grease — and eggs — visible yolk — for those of you wondering.) After walking home, Jerry would work at the market, and I
would hang out in the market for a half hour or so. Some of the kids hanging out at the market were a little rough, so Ed, one of my other friends, and I renamed the market “Espy’s Neighborly Hood Market.” Jerry was not pleased, but the name stuck.
MORE MARKET STORIES
Once in a while, I used to go with a friend on his paper route. He delivered the papers early, like 5 a.m. We used to play a prank on one of the other neighborhood markets. The market had a big front window with displays of products. Some products were on stands. Some were sitting on the shelf at the bottom of the window. There were drain holes at the bottom of the window. Unfortunately for the market owner, we were able to poke a straightened coat hanger, which we brought for the occasion, through the drain holes and knock over the displays with the wire. We thought it was pretty funny. #YoungHoodlums. About two years ago, I read in my hometown newspaper online that one of the last, if not the last, neighborhood market in town closed after the last family member became too old to keep it open and no buyer could be found. My mom and dad used to go to that market, which was way on the other side of town, because they liked the meat there and the market carried Lake Shore Pumpkin (which my grandmother maintained was the best canned pumpkin for pumpkin pie). Those were great days!

With an almost entirely brand-new PTSA board, Glenridge Middle School is ready to kick off an exciting new school year. DANIELLE HENDRIX ASSOCIATE EDITOR
T
he beginning of a new school year is prime time for brandnew school supplies, clothes and daily routines. And for Glenridge Middle School, the 2019-20 school year has kicked off with an almost entirely brandnew Parent Teacher Student Association board. Of the eight board members, only one has served on the PTSA board at Glenridge previously. With so many fresh faces now at the helm of the organization, the group is working together tirelessly to promote school spirit and birth a new era for the PTSA. This year’s PTSA board is comprised of Tanya Veras serving as president, Mandy Borkman as vice president of fundraising, Angie Montenegro as vice president of merchandise, Sara-lyn Rodriguez as vice president of mini-grants, Ann Stevens as recording secretary, Helinfield Hanecak as treasurer, Kelly Hagy as corresponding secretary and Katie Maun as vice president of student involvement. PTSA President Tanya Veras

said she came on board when she was approached by the principal, Dr. Christopher Camacho toward the end of last school year. “The reason (I joined), in all reality, is being able to serve the school that my kids go to — it is an honor,” Veras says. “And for someone to think that highly of me that I’d be able to serve in this position, I was full of gratitude. I certainly am doing everything I can to make sure that Dr. Camacho is grateful that he asked me.” Stevens, the only returning board member, is also the SAC chair at Glenridge. All of the children of the parents she’d worked with previously have gone on to high school now, and she says she stayed a PTSA board member to help with continuity and connect the two organizations. For others, they had been involved in similar organizations at schools like Baldwin Park Elementary and Aloma Elementary. When the new board members got together, they realized they had a lot of potential — and a lot of ideas. Putting their heads together, they have come up with three areas, or pillars, of the foundation for the

PTSA culture they want to foster. “I think there’s really three main goals I have for PTSA this year, and the first is to build community,” Veras says. “(We are about) being inclusive, and I think you build it one family at a time. I would say our second pillar is to have more students and teachers involved, so one of the things I’m super excited about is we have 100% of our faculty and staff as members of the PTSA. That is amazing. The third pillar is just advocating on behalf of all students.” The board also recognized that it’s hard to truly have a PTSA organization without the “T” and the “S” involved, so there is now a PTSA Student Club. Over the summer alone, more than 50 students decided to get involved with this club. “In co-creating this — this is certainly not a one-man show — and in spreading ideas and brainstorm-
ing, a PTSA Student Club came out of this brainstorm session,” Veras says. “One thing led to another and next thing you know, we had a kickoff meeting.” The goals of the PTSA Student Club are to build community and foster inclusivity, to build leadership skills and to provide opportunities for community service. In addition to this brand-new club, the PTSA board also has its hands in creating and planning multiple events throughout the year — for the students, families and the community at large. The biggest fundraiser planned thus far is the Viva Las Vegas Silent Auction and Party, which will take place Friday, Nov. 8, at the Orlando Museum of Art. The adult-only event will include casino tables, a DJ, food and a silent auction. Teachers and families are

being encouraged to save the date and join in on the event, which will raise funds for school and teacher activities. “It’s about building community, and a great way to do that is to have an excellent event that will build community and raise funds for the school,” Mandy Borkman says. “We’re going to raise funds to be able to support Dr. Camacho and his ideas, and the teachers and students, and help make this year successful.” And for the first time in a long time, the PTSA is planning an eighth-grade trip in March to New York City. Students would get to see a Broadway show, take a ferry to Ellis Island, see the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State building, take a double-decker bus tour and more. “I’ve heard of eighth-grade trips before, and I want Glenridge to have it all,” Veras says. “I want to be able to provide everything that every other school is providing to their students. Thankfully, I have amazing sidekicks and a board that I couldn’t do and live without.” The PTSA members encourage any parent, teacher, student or community member who is interested in getting involved at Glenridge to reach out and join the group. And with all of the amazing ideas, upcoming events and involvement the PTSA is gearing up to pour into the school, Camacho said he has a winning team. “It has left me with an exciting feeling, simple as that,” he says. “When people ask me what I do, I don’t give them a title. I say, ‘I get to be part of a young person’s life today.’ I don’t think any test score will ever dictate that, because of the experiences they’re going to have firsthand here in leadership and serving others. We’ve got adults that are modeling that for them — that right there is beautiful within itself. We’re raising young people and have examples for them, and everything just falls into place.”

The magical power of
KINDNESS A
BECCA SCHMIDT BALDWIN PARK LIFESTYLE DIRECTOR
n 11-year old El Paso boy recently announced his plan to carry out 22 acts of kindness in honor of the 22 people killed in his city. His intention became a challenge for people everywhere in cities throughout the United States to pledge their own 22 acts of kindness. Imagine if all 8,000 residents of Baldwin Park committed to that! That’s 176,000 acts of kindness! Let’s get started. I’ve compiled these acts of kindness from posts, blogs and websites whose purpose it is to make the world a better place. I’ve included a few of my own, as well. I encourage you to pledge 22 days, 22 weeks or 22 years of kindness! n Cat- or dog-sit for a friend and ask for nothing in return. n Ask your friend to join you for a walk — at their pace. n Leave a few umbrellas at the bus stop.
Lifestyle Director Becca Schmidt has lived in Baldwin Park since 2005 and has the pulse on neighborhood social gatherings. Check out the Groups and Gatherings section of baldwinpark.net for a list of Baldwin Parkbased groups. Contact Becca at lifestyledirector@baldwinparkpoa. com if you’d like to start a new group or have questions about how you can meet your neighbors.

n College kids — do your mom’s laundry! n Make a list of 50 things you love about your mate and give it to them on their way to work. n Put freshly potted flowers on your neighbor’s porch. n Pick up after your dog (bonus points if you pick up after someone else’s dog)! n Allow your small children to jump in rain puddles.
BALDWIN PARK LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2019
n Volunteer your time to feed people, or collect toiletries to donate to people in need. n Foster a senior dog or cat.
n Practice mindful listening with good eye contact and don’t interrupt. n Kids and teens, invite the new kid at school to sit with you and your friends at lunch. n Buy a stack of $5 gift cards and give them out randomly and generously.
n Tip your server 25%. n Drive the speed limit. n If you see a parent taking photos of their kids, offer to take a group shot for them. n Pay for lunch for the person in line behind you, or at the table next to you. n Tell a child how impressed you are with their good manners.
n Say good morning to everyone on your sunrise walk around the lake. n Let an inspiring writer, journalist or blogger know that their story made a difference. n Plant butterfly-friendly flowers.
n When you RSVP to an event, show up.
n Recycle.
n Buy a glass of lemonade from the kids’ lemonade stand.
n Praise a co-worker in front of others.
n Treat a teen to lunch.
n Support small businesses and compliment the store owner on their merchandise choices.
n Really listen to your grandparents reminisce about “the good old days.” Record their voices and take notes! n Give high-quality groceries to the food pantry, including organic and minimally processed foods.
n Fill out customer feedback cards and rave about an employee. n Tip the bag boy. n Give your mom a hug.
n Feed your roofers, painters and landscapers. Have a pot of coffee and cinnamon rolls ready when they arrive at the crack of dawn. n Write a letter to a former teacher who made a difference in your life.
The most important thing to remember is that everyone is a human being with feelings, just like you. An act of kindness may feel small to you, but it may be the one bright occurrence in a person’s day. Kindness is contagious. Catch it, spread it.

GET YOUR SHINE ON Runway to Hope’s upcoming Sparkle and Shine 5K is bringing some shimmer to Baldwin Park in support of pediatric cancer research. DANIELLE HENDRIX ASSOCIATE EDITOR

unners, get your glitter on and prepare to race for a cause. Baldwin Park plays host to many 5K races and fundraisers annually, but there’s a brand-new race in town this year — and it’s all about the sparkle, shine and support for fighting pediatric cancer. Central Florida-based nonprofit Runway to Hope supports local families that are fighting pediatric cancer, all while seeking a cure. The organization helps foster collaborative efforts among corporations, businesses and philanthropists to raise funds and awareness, but also to bring new programs and initiatives to the pediatric cancer community. Runway to Hope partners with local children’s hospitals to help fund innovative programs that are otherwise underserved or nonexistent. However, there’s a second pillar, as well: The organization provides direct support and aid primarily to impacted children and their families. “We assist families directly with financial aid who are battling pediatric cancer,” says Laura Lockner, executive director for Runway to Hope. “A lot of times when a child is diagnosed, one parent will have to quit their job and become a full-

time caretaker. In the month of July alone we gave $18,000 in assistance.” The family-assistance program really took off in 2014, and between then and 2018, Runway to Hope has given more than $360,000 to local families impacted by pediatric cancer. Lockner added that this year, the organization is expected to spend more annually than it ever has since Runway to Hope was founded. Requests for assistance are growing, and Lockner said that the organization is receiving at least one application for financial assistance daily. “That’s our goal — we want to provide a relief to families,” Lockner says. “Even if it is small in the grand scheme of things, it’s really important to us to be able to help them through this really difficult time.” The nonprofit already runs a very successful gala, the Runway to Hope Spring Soiree, and Lockner said that it has won the title of Best Charity Event many times. While they’re happy that there is a good turnout at the gala each year, though, Runway to Hope team
SPARKLE AND SHINE 5K WHEN: 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 WHERE: Harbor Park at Lake Baldwin, 4990 New Broad St., Orlando REGISTRATION: $40 at bit. ly/2KzWYRG through Thursday, Sept. 5. Runners also can show up as early as 6 a.m. day of to register. DETAILS: Get your glitter on! Participants in Runway to Hope’s inaugural 5K Fun Run and Walk event will get glammed up at Runway to Hope’s glitter stations before the race, and the course takes runners around scenic Lake Baldwin. The race will aid the mission of Runway to Hope, which is to support families — primarily in Central Florida — fighting pediatric cancer while seeking a cure. members felt that they wanted to try adding a different fundraising avenue. “We felt that it’s important to bring something to the community that would not only raise awareness but also be able to cast a wide net,” Lockner says. “We want people to be able to support at any level. We want the entire community to be able to be involved and have it be something attainable. It’s a different fundraising model. We want to see our models shine on the runway and that type of thing, so we sort of took that concept and wanted to invert it.” Runway to Hope’s Spring Soiree includes a runway-style fashion show featuring children who either are currently battling cancer or who have survived it, and they get dolled up and strut down the runway to cheering guests. The path around Lake Baldwin will become a runway of sorts Saturday, Sept. 7, as participants take to the pavement to sparkle, shine and raise awareness for pediatric cancer. It’s the perfect time of year to host this 5K, Lockner said, be-
cause September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. “It’s really cool that the community gets to sparkle and shine in support of all of these families, and their runway is the race,” Lockner says. “They get to get their glitter on and dress up, in a similar parallel to our kids. It’s a feel-good event ... and people can really come out and support and raise awareness.” Runners are encouraged to come wearing body glitter, sparkly tutus and shiny clothing to really get into the “Sparkle and Shine” theme. Lockner said there will be glitter stations available prior to the race for people to get glammed up. “I’ve attended other 5Ks and races, so with this being the first one Runway to Hope has done, it’s been interesting to pull inspiration from what other races are doing in the community,” Lockner says. “We’re trying to garner community support and get as many donations as we can for the things we need — whether it’s the stage or refreshments or tents or whatever it is, we’re looking so we can ensure 100% of proceeds go to the families.”
Registration as of Sept. 1 costs $40 and includes entry, a finisher medal and a T-shirt. Online registration will close Thursday, Sept. 5, but runners can come out to the race as early as 6 a.m. day of to register on the spot. The first 500 runners will receive a duffel bag from Bloomingdale’s, and there will be awards for each age group and for the team that raises the most money. Although the Sparkle and Shine 5K is described as a run/walk, it is chip timed for those interested. It’s also family-friendly, and there will be a separate kids fun run and a kids zone sponsored by Nemours Children’s Hospital. “We’re just really excited to have another avenue to raise awareness and raise funds for our family-assistance program, and we’re really excited to have people come out,” Lockner says. “If somebody learns one fact or one thing about what a family’s pediatric cancer journey is truly like, I think it will all have been worth it. It’s hard and it’s real, and we’re doing our best to educate and get people out there and raise money to make a difference.”
“
I think it’s really cool that the community gets to sparkle and shine in support of all of these families, and their runway is the race.” — LAURA LOCKNER

f feeling more energetic, focused and ready to seize the day in under an hour interests you, it might be a good idea to stop by ENLivE in the Village Center. ENLivE IV and Hormone Therapy held its grand opening at its flagship location on New Broad Street on July 3. It falls into the category of a medical spa, as it offers IV vitamin therapy, hormone-replacement therapy, and Botox and fillers. Cofounders and owners Michael Bowerman and Ivi Bifsha are both physicians. Their interests in IV therapy were piqued during a continuing-education medical seminar at the Orange County Convention Center a while back. “We started looking into it and thought, ‘Well, we could actually do this,’” Bowerman says. “We did some research, figured things out … and get serious about it and kept
going with it. It kind of spiraled into what it is now.” Bowerman describes ENLivE as a medical facility with an aesthetics and anti-aging wellness center. The bread and butter of ENLivE is the IV vitamin infusions. The staff consists of trained nurses, and Dr. Renata Orna also is on staff to administer the HRT treatment, as well as Botox and fillers. The business partners have been working on ENLivE since late last year and began first by researching locations. They wanted to find a demographic that they were both familiar with but that also could sustain the type of office they wanted to open. “We wanted to find a place that was more young professionals, older/retired or older professionals that were health conscious and wanted to really better their lives,” he says. “We’re not treating, diagnosing or fixing any concontinued on page 32

dition whatsoever — we are more so helping people achieve the kind of wellness they’re looking for. We have immunity IVs … if they want to be preventative and boost their immune system, (and) we have energy IVs, as well. We tried to kind of make it completely well-rounded and thats why we also brought our physician (Dr. Orna) in, and she’s handling the aesthetic side of the practice.” Although Bowerman and Bifsha are physicians themselves, they are not practicing at ENLivE and each practices elsewhere. They were passionate about bringing a different kind of service to Baldwin Park, Bowerman said, but they did want to have a physician in the office to handle the aesthetic treatments. “We really lucked out with Baldwin Park,” he says. “Regardless of the place we found we were going to make this happen, but I think finding (this) spot really got us both incredibly excited and lit a
fire under us. We really pushed to get everything through.” IV vitamin infusions can take up to 45 minutes and are completely customizable. There are seven types of IV drips available — Energy Boost, Hangover Cure, Pain Killer, Myers Original, Super Immune, Weekend Warrior and Skin Rejuvenation. Each is meant to benefit the body in different ways, from boosting energy levels to infusing essential vitamins and minerals. Customers also can choose from six add-ons for their IV treatments, if they wish. These range from $20 to $55 and include vitamin C, glutamine and taurine. “It’s not a new treatment, but it’s definitely a newer treatment to the Orlando area,” Bowerman says of IV vitamin therapy. “There aren’t very many facilities that offer this stuff and the extent of what we have. There might be IV treatment facilities, but not a lot offer the aesthetic side. We wanted to be able to have a well-rounded office.” In addition to IV infusions, ENLivE also offers vitamin injections,

which can be administered quicker. Customers can choose from a range of antioxidants, amino acids and vitamins — options include taurine, biotin, vitamin B complex and vitamin B12. Finally, there is the aesthetics side of the practice, which includes HRT, Botox and fillers. HRT can help balance your body’s hormone levels, and the aesthetic injectables provide patients with a more youthful and rested appearance. ENLivE has only been open for two months now, but already Bowerman and Bifsha are noticing the increased interest. “It’s kind of been a whirlwind,” Bowerman says of the first few weeks of ENLivE being open. “It’s actually been pretty fun. It’s that feeling of Christmas morning — you’re just so excited about it. “This is definitely something that’s not a one-time thing,” he says. “You see the benefits immediately — this is directly into your bloodstream. With the IV treatment you’re absorbing 100% of the vitamin. It’s a lasting effect.”

first home is many things — a milestone in a person’s life, a place to grow, a sign of financial stability. A home also is an investment, whether it’s your first or last. The Central Florida real estate market continues to heat up as interest rates drop yet again. First-time buyers would be wise to seize the opportunity and buy smart, avoiding the cliché pitfall of waiting for the perfect home or time to buy. The reality is that the perfect home is elusive. If you’ve ever built a home, you know that once you move in you think of a dozen things you should have included but didn’t. The perfect home is a living, growing idea, changing as your life and needs
n When shopping for your first home, one of the most important things to consider is affordability. It’s never a good idea to bite off more than you can chew when it comes to investments, and a first home purchase is no different. Can you afford the payments, the upkeep and the taxes? The concept of roommates is far from new, but I’m seeing more and more firsttime buyers who are starting their journey into homeownership with Airbnb hosting or
roommates in mind. A recent trend in new home construction has been to create homes fit for multiple generations to live together. Even if you don’t plan to share your first home with your abuela, you may want to use that second master suite for additional income. n Something else to remember: homeownership has benefits that renting never will. Yes, you will have to maintain your property, but you can write off some improvements, as well as your mortgage interest and property taxes up to $10,000. Of course, another way to keep Uncle Sam’s profits from your property minimized is to remember to claim your

homestead exemption. If you reside in the home, claim it! Purchasing a place closer to work? You save on gas and wear and tear on your vehicle. Most importantly, you can freeze your fees. Think of it this way: As demand and population size increase, rents are likely to keep rising. When you purchase a home, you have the opportunity to lock in your interest rate and “freeze” your housing costs, one of the biggest benefits to having your name on the deed. n Most importantly, look at your first home purchase through the lens of future buyers. What is the neighborhood and surrounding area like? Is it in an area with new construction, infrastructure and plans for future community enhancements or job growth? A prime example of this is Baldwin Park. Baldwin is an extremely well-designed community located in the heart of Orlando, perfect for those who want city living but prefer to have a bit more room to breathe. How are the schools in the area you are thinking of buying in? The next owner of your home may have children, and a highly rated school can only help your home’s value. And while we’re talking about the future, don’t get hung up on your first home being

your forever home. If you buy smart, you can move up into your dream home in a few years. It’s rare, but I have certainly seen people wait to find the perfect place and lose out on the ability to afford the neighborhood they want. Buying smart means looking at the pros and cons and acknowledging that you may not be able to get every single feature your heart desires your first time out. Location always is more important than cosmetic upgrades — you can change your countertops, but not your lot size or neighborhood. n Last but not least, always protect your investment. A home warranty can be a real lifesaver as a reliable company may replace your A/C system, fridge or hot water heater. These things have a way of happening at the worst and least-expected times, so eliminate extra anxiety by having a home warranty in place the day of your closing. Pest control and a termite bond are great things to consider, as well as routinely scheduled maintenance on things like your air conditioner. Don’t wait for a problem to occur — plan to care for your home and its systems. Your first home is an opportunity to create greater financial wealth. Forget perfect and think smart.

NORTH PARK BAPTIST CHURCH VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL It was a wild week over at North Park Baptist Church from July 15 to 19, as more than 100 children attended the “In The Wild” themed Vacation Bible School. Children spent the week on a “safari” as they learned about God, enjoyed crafts and snacks, danced and sang to fun songs, and got their energy out during outside playtime.
— DANIELLE HENDRIX
Jackson Fussell had a blast chasing the kickball around during outside playtime. Bishop Mariniello was proud of his craft.
Armaan Khan concentrated on waving his wind stick. Left: Brendan Porter was happy to show off his “tiger tail.”
