‘We were literally just running for our lives’ Michelle Bergstein-Fontanez remembers the chaotic atmosphere while heading toward the Brooklyn Bridge with thousands of survivors. COMMUNITY EDITOR

ichelle Bergstein-Fontanez will never forget the sounds of chaos, the smell of burning debris and metal, or the feeling of walking side by side among thousands of New Yorkers covered in soot and dust. In the fall of 2001, she was 23 and working as an administrative assistant for Hakuhodo Advertising in a New York City skyscraper at 34th Street and Park Avenue. On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, the Brooklyn resident took the train into the city, as was her routine, but everything changed just as she was entering her office building. A coworker shared the news about an airplane hitting the World Trade Center, and they scrambled upstairs to find out what happened.

Because they had just moved into their new offices, the Hakuhodo employees didn’t have access to a television — only radios. “Then, the phone calls came in,” Bergstein-Fontanez said, and the next 90 minutes were a chaotic attempt to learn details of the plane crash. “It was like 10:15 (a.m.) that they let us leave,” she said. “It was that much panic. “No one knew what was going on,” she said. “We got out of work, just hordes of people were asked to just evacuate the building. … It was so scary. I got down on the ground level, and people were running and panicking and trying to make phone calls and no one could get through. “I hopped on the first bus I saw,” she said. “They weren’t going past 14th Street, and then you

amazing how the New Yorkers pulled through,” BergsteinFontanez said. “There were people, like construction people, offering rides in their trucks. … I hopped in the back with the rest of the people who were going in that direction, and they dropped me off like a block from my house. … I got home around 2:30.” She tried to reach family members by phone, but there still was no communication available. She later learned her brother was stuck all night at Penn Station, and her mother, who worked in Jersey City, had to stay with her coworkers through the night in their office building. Her mother later shared the story of witnessing the entirety of the WTC attacks. “The one thing that was so consuming was the air,” BergsteinFontanez said. “The smell — it was so potent, like that burning smell of metal. And even in the weeks and months, that smell just lingered. I feel like they never really said that in the news.” Bergstein-Fontanez said she returned to work the next Monday. “We tried to move on; we had to keep going,” she said.

She was ready for a change after experiencing the Northeast blackout in summer 2003, which she said was nearly as traumatic as 9/11 for her. With no power and no subway service, BergsteinFontanez found herself walking down 31 flights of stairs. She didn’t think she could walk the 25 blocks to the bridge, so she and two co-workers began knocking on car windows looking for a ride home. They found a kind gentleman willing to drive them, and she was able to get to her Queens home and to her husband. Not long after, they moved to Ocoee, where she has immersed herself in her family life and in her social media company, Beat Creative Marketing. She has kept magazines and newspaper articles detailing 9/11 and the aftermath — but she has been unable to watch any of the documentaries. “I can’t watch this; I was there,” she said. “It triggers me to have all these emotions. Looking at these (magazine) pictures gets me.”

They were crying, they were hysterical.” She estimates she reached the Brooklyn Bridge at about noon. “While we were running, we were seeing this like chimney of smoke,” she said. “We didn’t know anything that was happening until I got to that bridge. And even the people who escaped there were so confused and so shocked.” She said her boss’ husband worked in the Marriott Marquis near the WTC and was one of the people who escaped from the giant dust cloud that erupted when the towers fell. “He fell, and he said, ‘Someone reached down and lifted me up, and that’s how I got out of there,’” Bergstein-Fontanez said. “It was by the grace of God that he survived that. “When we got to the Brooklyn side of the bridge, it was really

n the wake of 9/11, Winter Garden resident Norman Rein worked at Ground Zero with the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team. He was a lifelong volunteer firefighter and had been elected Long Island fire commissioner after retiring from the Homicide Bureau of the Suffolk County Police Department in 1998. Twenty years have passed, but the memories of those long days are forever etched in his mind. “I began working as part of the task force that organized about 250 pieces of fire apparatus to stage at Shea Stadium,” Rein said. “Because they lost so much equipment in New York, we just deployed all of it. Later, I went to Ground Zero and I started helping. It was initially chaotic. The next couple of days I was at Ground Zero and I met up with some some disaster mortuary team members, and from that point, for that next five weeks, I was either at Ground Zero helping out, transporting bodies or actually working with the morgue.” “It was treacherous terrain and very hot,” he said. “You had to be careful you didn’t burn your feet — even though you wore very protective boots. When it rained it became very slippery. It was toxic. For weeks, you smelled nothing but what you would smell in a morgue. It was very noisy, with the cranes and helicopters above. But when a body was found a hush came over like you were under water. And just deep respect … they weren’t just finding the whole body, they were finding parts. And you’re trying to make this an objective mis-

sion, but it’s very hard not to realize that you’re walking on people who died.” Rein lost more than 50 friends when the towers fell; many were in fire departments and law enforcement. But additional dangers were not immediately understood. “I didn’t think about it the first day,” Rein said of his respirator. “Then I realized, ‘This could be toxic.’ I had that equipment in my car so, I wore it until one day someone was having a problem breathing, and I gave him my mask... and I never got it back.” To this day, the 9/11 death toll continues to increase because of the airborne toxins. “I’ve lost a number of friends in the ensuing years because of that,” Rein said. “And I’ve had cancer now, probably as a result. I’ve had two of the 67 types of cancers that are associated with being at Ground Zero.” Ten years ago, Rein organized and presented the Remembrance 9/11 Tribute Exhibit in Winter Garden. And this week, it will be open Sept. 8 to 11 inside the Commission Chambers at the Winter Garden City Hall. More than 200 pieces of memorabilia and 50 collages are arranged in a timeline spanning the attacks, investigations and memorials. There is a special area honoring all first responders and essential industries. And posters made by schoolchildren decorate walls and tables throughout the room. The collection is compelling, heartbreaking and inspiring. And was made possible by people with firsthand knowledge. The exhibit honors victims, survivors and helpers. It also acknowl-

Mike Mason, of the Winter Garden Police Department, loaned Rein his U.S. Army fatigues and memorabilia from his three tours of duty in Iraq. Winter Garden resident Jimmy Brown — who served as a New York City firefighter and was buried in ash and debris when the North Tower collapsed — also has an exhibit table with photographs and mementos. A nine-minute video was contributed by Winter Garden resident and former FBI agent Peter Yachmetz. On Sept. 11, 2001, Yachmetz was part of the FBI Field Office in Newark, New Jersey. He was among many agents to assist with interviews and leads associated with the attack. When the hijackers were identified, agents conducted interviews with anyone who had any association with them. “We worked 12-hour shifts for more than a month,” Yachmetz said. “This is how we found out they took flying lessons but only wanted to learn to take off. “And they had flown around on the airlines just to examine the

boarding process and the in-flight process.” Yachmetz shot the video from a helicopter while retrieving reports from teams near Ground Zero. “You really don’t get the overall of impression of the magnitude of what happened until you get a bird’s-eye view,” Yachmetz said. “You can’t put it into words, at least not words that you could print.” Yachmetz, currently a security consultant specializing in physical security and access control, teams up with Rein to conduct comprehensive security risk assessments for private and parochial schools, houses of worship, health care facilities, and special venues. They continue serving their community with a belief the lessons learned 20 years ago never should be forgotten. “Never forget what happened on 9/11,” Yachmetz said. “Or, at the time, how we let our defenses down.” “We’re exposed to the potential for something like this to happen again,” Rein said. “We have to look back at history to know what the future might be.”

‘Fear is what I still remember to this day’ Ocoee resident Theresa Rinaldi was living on Long Island the day of the attacks. One friend survived. Another did not. ANNABELLE SIKES STAFF WRITER

The bouquet of three dozen red roses arrives at Donna Spera’s doorstep every year on Sept. 11. Twenty years ago today, Spera was pulled from the crumbling structure of the World Trade Center by Deputy U.S. Marshal Dominic Guadagnoli. One of Spera’s friends, Theresa Rinaldi, an Ocoee resident, said Guadagnoli has never missed a year. “Every year he remembers her in a special way,” Rinaldi said. “What a brave man to go up all that way and carry her to safety.” Rinaldi said she remembers the horrific day like it was yesterday. Rinaldi was born in 1963, in Queens, New York, and moved in 1970 to Long Island, where she continued to live until 2001. She was on Long Island the day the planes hit. “That day, that event, it’s something that no one ever forgets,” Rinaldi said, her voice quivering.

Rinaldi said she was sitting on her couch packing her suitcase on the morning of 9/11 when her friend called her and asked if she was watching TV. Rinaldi wasn’t but scrambled to find the remote. She clicked the TV on, and the images left Rinaldi in shock. “I just sat there,” she said. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, and I remember thinking, ‘This isn’t real. It can’t be real.’” She watched every event unfold that day. As she told her story, chills swept through her body. “I was so scared,” Rinaldi said. “The only way that I can describe it was pure terror.” She said at that moment, she had a million thoughts running through her head. She thought it was the beginning of World War III. She thought she was going to be attacked. She thought she was going to die. Rinaldi’s home in Long Island was only 45 minutes away from the towers. She had no idea that Spera was trapped amid the chaos. Spera, who worked as an administrative assistant in the World Trade Center, was severely injured while trying to escape the building that was quickly crumbling. Guadagnoli found her on the 78th floor of the South Tower. The skin on her arms and back was melting from being badly burned,

her knees were cut from crawling, her hand was shattered, and her scalp was beginning to bleed. Guadagnoli carried her through the burning building and to safety. “He made a promise not to leaver her,” Rinaldi said. “He saved her life.” Guadagnoli, who had been working at a nearby courthouse that day, raced to the World Trade Center shortly after the planes hit. He saved numerous lives that day. To this day, Guadagnoli and Spera remain close friends. They understand each other in ways no one else can. The tragedy will connect them forever. Rinaldi said at the time, she had no idea Spera had been injured. She found out later from Spera’s husband, whom Rinaldi knew from high school. In 2010, Spera and her husband

came to Florida to visit Rinaldi. It was the first time Spera had gotten on a plane since the attack. Rinaldi said Spera had to take medication to calm her nerves. She has been through years of

counseling, but nothing can erase the pain of that day. However, Spera wasn’t the only one of Rinaldi’s friends who had been a victim to the deadly attack. A year later, Rinaldi heard a familiar name announced at a 9/11 remembrance ceremony. “They said Vincent Abate, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, this cannot be the same Vincent I knew,” Rinaldi said. Abate lost his life on the 105th floor of Tower One that day. Rinaldi said she and Abate had dated for a short period of time when she was in her 30s. Rinaldi remembers him as being sweet, generous and a gentleman and having a great sense of sarcastic humor. Rinaldi said she wished she had kept in touch with him and that she felt extremely guilty. “It was shock; it was all shocking,” Rinaldi said. “To this day, I can’t even bring myself to watch the shows and documentaries and other films on 9/11. It’s just too real.” Three weeks after the terrorist attack, Rinaldi moved to Florida. Rinaldi said even though she had previously planned on moving to the area before 9/11, the attacks validated that the move was the right thing to do. “Fear is what I still remember to this day,” Rinaldi said. This year, Rinaldi will travel to Lakeland to spend 9/11 with a conservative Christian group. Rinaldi said she implores the younger generation to educate themselves on the history of that day. “Be aware of your surroundings,” Rinaldi said. “Please, please, promise to never forget.”

remembering 9/11

We said, ‘Never forget.’ Time to mean it.

MICHAEL ENG

MY 9/11 STORY

I was with President George W. Bush. In 2001, I was a year out of college and a staff writer at our sister paper, the East County Observer, near Sarasota. Bush had been in town to promote some of his education reform initiatives, so I had signed up to cover his speech at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. That morning, I walked through a single metal detector, and someone handed me a mintgreen press pass. “Sept. 11, 2001,” it read. “Trip of the president to Sarasota.” That’s all it was supposed to be.

Within seconds of American Airlines Flight 11 striking 1 World Trade Center, reporters’ cell phones started erupting into a chorus of ringtones. The first report: A Cessna has hit the World Trade Center. Strange, we all thought. But then, calls kept coming. No, not a Cessna. Something bigger. A commercial plane. By 9 a.m., we all were huddled in a storage room where the school kept its audio/visual equipment. There was one TV on. And for the next 30 minutes, we watched — over and over again — that first plane. Then the second plane. It looked fake — like something out of a Michael Bay flick. The planes simply disappeared into the building and an orange fireball. The room, crammed with at least 40 people whose profession is communication, was silent. At 9:30 a.m., Bush emerged to take the podium. The school had assembled a backdrop of students and teachers — all of whom seemed unaware of what was happening. “Today, we’ve had a national tragedy,” Bush said, his hands folded atop the podium. “Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country.” With my left hand, I held up my tiny digital point-and-click, firing shot after shot as quickly

Personalized care with compassion and excellence.

In 2001, there was no Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg was 17 years old), no Twitter. No one retreated to their pocket-sized screens to tell them how to feel. We all were left to endure the slings and arrows of this dark day, to suffocate under the weight of our world forever changed. We rallied around the cry, “Never forget.” And we were better for it. In the days, weeks and months that followed, the attacks galvanized a spirit of patriotism I had never felt before. We honored our heroes — the ones doing good, the ones Mr. Rogers called “the helpers.” There existed a thread that connected every one of us, an understanding and appreciation for our fellow Americans. There was a shared view that all the differences we had paled in comparison to the similarities we shared. You could see it in strangers’ eyes. Oh, how I wish we could unte-

ther our lives from social media — and all its artificial intelligence, counterfeit controversies and damaging deception. We’ve become an America that is incapable of taking the time to dwell in it. We want our answers too quickly — even if they are incorrect. And during the pandemic, it has become soberingly clear that we’ve become an America fractured along insignificant and, in some cases, fabricated lines. On this, the 20th anniversary of the deadliest foreign attack on U.S. soil, take the time. Take the time to remember. Take the time to thank a hero. Take the time to honor those who lost their lives (see our 9/11 events calendar on page 2). Take the time to be authentic and honest about what happened that day. And most importantly, take the time to share your story with your children. It is imperative we make good on our promise to “never forget.” Twenty years later, that means ensuring our future generations know and understand the reality of 9/11. Don’t know how? Turn to page 13, where some local educators share their tactics and advice. In a time when the so-called news of the day flies by as fast as a finger can swipe through a Twitter feed, I implore you: Do not let this anniversary pass without the attention it deserves. Honor it. Feel it. Remember it.

as it would allow. With my right hand, I steadied my notepad on my knee as my pen attempted to capture every word. Bush was in and out in less than five minutes. bout a week ago, we asked our Facebook followers to share their “Where were you on 9/11?” stories. And like anyone old enough to have one, the dozens who responded can recall, in riveting detail, every second of that morning. They remember where they were, whom they were with and the emotions they tried — futilely — to control. “I had a weird feeling and begged my then boyfriend (now husband) not to go into work that morning,” Katie Holmes Leccese shared. “I had never felt that before — nor have I since. He headed off to Manhattan, and an hour later, I received a call from a friend crying and urging me to turn on the news. I immediately tried contacting him and couldn’t reach him for hours. ... He ended up being stuck on the bridge watching the plumes of smoke and chaos, and never got all the way into the city. ... It was a terrifying experience, but we were some of the lucky ones. Never, ever forget.” Kristie Greenberg wrote: “I

was in the Air Force at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. We were hours behind the East Coast — and I had just gotten up to start my day. I couldn’t begin to fathom what I was seeing. The next thing I knew, the base went to Threatcon Delta. We were on lockdown. And C-130s consistently circled the perimeter of the base. The low buzz that would get louder and louder. So scary.” As I read these and the dozens of others we received, the words pulled me back into that day. That horrific, unyielding day, when the country seemed be drained of its color. That day, when every American saw the world change before their eyes.

Steeled resolve Winter Garden, Ocoee and Windermere all have 9/11 memorials that contain pieces of the World Trade Center. AMY QUESINBERRY COMMUNITY EDITOR

West Orange is home to three pieces of the World Trade Center. In the years since 9/11, leaders in Winter Garden, Ocoee and Windermere all decided to install and dedicate memorials in their respective municipalities. WINTER GARDEN

When John Williamson heard the Port Authority of New Jersey and New York was offering communities a chance to obtain a piece of history in 2010, the thenfire chief for the Winter Garden Fire Department sent a letter requesting a section of steel that was once part of the World Trade Center in New York City. His request was granted, and he gathered a group of men — local police officers, firefighters and residents — to drive to John F. Kennedy International Airport to pick up the four-foot-long, 701-pound I-beam and bring it to its new home. In September 2011, the four volunteers left for New York: Winter Garden Fire Battalion Chief Brian Sanders; Winter

Garden police Detective James Cox, who drove his truck; Winter Garden resident Jimmy Brown, who was an NYC firefighter stationed with Company 10 across the street from the WTC in 2001 and was among the first rescuers to enter the tower; and Belle Isle police officer Tren Trendafilov, a friend of Brown. The piece of steel traveled from New York to Florida on the truck bed, draped with an American flag. It arrived at Winter Garden City Hall and was transported inside the Commission Chambers, where it was displayed during the city’s Remembrance 9/11 Tribute. The historic piece eventually was moved and is on permanent display in a 9/11 memorial in the small park at Main and Cypress streets adjacent to the Fire Department Headquarters. The city held a dedication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2015, and speaking were WGHF chaplain Joshua Sauers, Fire Chief Matt McGrew, Mayor John Rees, Deputy Police Chief Bill Sullivan, police chaplain Ray Minger and Brown. Brown, Cox, Sanders and Trendafilov unveiled the memorial, which sits on a black granite pedestal. OCOEE

The city of Ocoee was one of many municipalities to request a piece of steel from the wreckage of the fallen World Trade Center buildings in New York City. In 2013, the city held a ribbon-

cutting ceremony to officially dedicate a small but important piece at its fire station on West Road. The square section is part of a 9/11 memorial designed and built by FX Design Group in Ocoee. The steel beam portion of the illuminated display is removable and can be taken to schools for hands-on education of the 9/11 tragedy. The memorial includes a proclamation the city issued calling Sept. 11 “a day of prayer, remembrance and rededication to patriotism and love for our country that will be recognized forever.” The memorial typically is on display in the lobby of Ocoee Fire Station 25, 563 S. Bluford Ave.

WINDERMERE

Windermere resident Jeff Cox, then 15, was looking for a meaningful Eagle Scout project in 2009 when he learned the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was giving communities pieces of the World Trade Center rubble. With the help of the town of Windermere and Boy Scout Troop 6, Cox secured a steel beam nearly 4 feet long and 650 pounds. He designed a memorial monument with the assistance of engineers and architects, who donated their services. The black granite memorial is 8 feet tall and includes 90 ceramic tiles around the base that were painted by Central Florida scouts and represent the countries of all the people who died in the 9/11 attacks.

The 9/11 Memorial stands in a quiet area behind Windermere Town Hall, 520 Main St., next to the Windermere Library. It has benches, trees and a path leading up to the steel piece. The memorial dedication was held Feb. 20, 2010. Scouts from Troop 6 rode through town with the Patriot Guard before stopping at the monument. Guest speakers included several people who lost family members Sept. 11. A primary plaque describes the attacks and the memorial. A second plaque recognizes Cox, Troop 6 and then-Mayor Gary Bruhn. In 2011, Cox received the National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award.

“I was holding my 9-monthold first-born daughter on my lap, absently listening to the morning news while pulling on her little socks and shoes for our 9 a.m. pediatrician appointment. The morning news was interrupted by a special report about a potential plane accident in New York City, but little else was known. The live news feed of the North Tower after the first plane strike was on the air, and as much as I understood something horrifying was unfolding, I had to get my baby to her nine-month appointment, so I rushed out the door, buckled her in and tuned the radio to live news coverage. As I was driving, the radio announcer cried out ‘another plane hit the tower’ describing the attack on the South Tower. The radio announcer was shaken and crying on air, unable to fully comprehend what was happening. I pulled to the side of the road, because I was having a hard time seeing through my tears and looked back at my little girl with overwhelming love and worry that I brought her into a world that would never be the same.”

— Orange County District 1 Commissioner Nicole H. Wilson

“I was at work at Silver Springs Citrus in Howey-in-the-Hills when we heard the news. My first thoughts were of disbelief; this does not happen in the United States. Such a sense of sorrow and helplessness as you watched the events unfold. We prayed for both the victims and the first responders as we watched people being rescued.” — Winter Garden Mayor John Rees

“I was at SWAT training at

After the news broke, the OPD SWAT Team was directed to return to the Orlando Police Department to prepare for any possible attacks in Orlando. We were already dressed and ready to go with all our equipment. We waited in the OPD gym and watched the second tower fall on the news. We stayed there ready to deploy for most of the day.” — Orange County Sheriff John Mina

“I had just arrived at work, preparing for the day and turning on the lobby TV. At that point watching in disbelief to what I was seeing unfold … in utter disbelief that this was reality.” — Ocoee City Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen

“I was at the auto auction … and we were in arbitration. We were all sitting there at the office, and I came walking in. The guy in the office had the TV on and there was a plane flying into the (South) Tower. It was like everything came to a stop. Everyone was standing there in awe.”

Orange County Sheriff’s Office running the Training Division. We gathered inside our Training Briefing room to watch what was unfolding and awaited instruction for activation from SO Command Staff. (Because) it was training, we were preparing with intelligence information on what we would need to train the troops. Probably more interesting is that a few years later, as a captain, I was chosen to be the director of the Central Florida Intelligence Exchange Fusion Center for Central Florida. Fusion Centers were stood up as a result of 9/11 and the 911 Commission Report. We were information-sharing and (collaborating with) centers to ensure local, state, federal, tribal and private sector partners communicated effectively to thwart future terrorist plots. CFIX was instrumental, in the time I was there, identifying terrorist activity that was thwarted in Central Florida. … Also, that was my last job at the OCSO before taking the Windermere chief position. I still sit on the Regional Domestic Security Task Force 5 Board.

— Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden

“I was at work in a senior staff meeting, when one of my coworkers entered the conference room and stated that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. As a private pilot, everyone quickly turned to me asking what could have happened. I assumed that a private plane might have impacted the Trade Center due to weather — as had happened 40 years prior, when a B-25 Bomber had hit the building shrouded by fog. We continued our meeting until we heard that a second plane had struck the North Tower, and it became more clear that this was some kind of coordinated attack. News was hard to come by at the time, we had no smart phones, and the internet was young and just a bit past dial-up. Netscape was overwhelmed, and we resorted to watching a small black-and-white TV. The scenes from New York were disturbing, but as the son of a firefighter, I assumed they would find a way to get everyone out. … When the first tower fell, I was shocked, and honestly, I still have trouble believing that it happened to this very day. ... It was difficult to get a true sense of the enormity of this tragedy or to know how to help.”

“I was walking into work at Disney and heard when I got in the door. We went to the conference room and turned on the TV. The internet was overwhelmed, and we waited to see what was next as the first two planes had crashed. It was surreal and scary as the other two planes crashed and to see the towers falling. Putting safety measures in place as best we could at both Disney and in Oakland. Coming home eventually to hug our families and to try and make sense of the loss and our next steps as a nation and a town.”

— Oakland Mayor Kathy Stark

“I was a director of pharmacy for a mail-order pharmacy in Hollywood, Florida. We had just moved into our new building, and in that location was a mounted TV. We as a staff would turn on the TV from time to time to see what was going on when we could get a connection from the local channels. On Sept. 11, the TV was on early in the morning, and someone said there is a movie on the TV, as they can see a plane crash into the World Trade Center. We all ran to the TV and still thought it was a movie we had access to. … We quickly realized we were watching the local news coverage of the 9/11 attacks. We all were numb, and I can remember some of the employees crying when we all heard what else was happening in the country.” — Oakland Town Commissioner Joseph McMullen

Called to duty JIM CARCHIDI ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Jack Ashby grew up wanting to be an astronaut. He always knew joining the U.S. Marines was part of his path to one day launching into space, but that path took another direction on Sept. 11, 2001. “Being the young middleschooler that I was, I reached out to a Marine Corps recruiter,” Ashby said. “And they’re like, ‘How old are you?’ And I told them, and they said, ‘Call us when you’re 17.’” The 9/11 attacks occurred far from Ashby’s hometown of West Linn, Oregon, but the call to serve was in his blood. A distant relative fought in the Civil War, and other family members had been drafted into service during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. “On that day, I just wanted to go over there and do something,” he said. He waited the five years necessary to enlist in a Delayed Entry Program in 2006 and shipped off to boot camp after graduating high school the following year. Several of his cousins joined the military for the

same reason. They would carry on the family tradition of service — but with a new mindset. “Everybody else (in my family) had been drafted so, technically, we were the first generation that made the decision that we’re volunteering for this,” Ashby said. His recollections of boot camp at the San Diego Marine Corp Recruit Depot include highly decorated drill instructors overseeing a diverse group of recruits. “There was a Cornell professor who was in his 30s,” he said. “There were guys from the Netherlands whose families had migrated here four years prior.” Their backgrounds may have differed, but they were brought together for the same reason. “None of (us was) doing it for the free college, none of us did it for the signing bonuses,” he said. “All our recruiters said was ‘We’ll give you the opportunity to call yourself a Marine,’ and we’re like, ‘Cool, let’s do it.’” Ashby was stationed in Afghanistan during the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The memories are difficult to revisit and impossible to put into words. But the reality is brought into focus by some words of advice from his executive officer. “He used to tell me all the time, ‘Be careful what you wish for, (because) you might get it,” Ashby said. “One day, I came back from a mission, and I’m sitting there, and he looked at me and asked, ‘Are you all right?’ And I said, ‘Nope.’

Jim Carchidi

Jack Ashby phoned a Marine recruiter on Sept. 11, 2001, to ask about enlisting. He was 11 years old.

“It seems like every year, (9/11) becomes less and less important to this country. But things happen, generations get older, new generations pop up. And what we were part of first-hand is, realistically, in the history books now. Even tying in with the war ending in the last few days, it’s a lot of just trying to — I wouldn’t say cope — but for me, I hope in the end it was all worth it. I hope that I did something productive.” And he said, ‘Did you get what you wished for?’ I go, ‘Yep.’ And he said, ‘How was it?’ I said, ‘It’s terrible.’ And it’s in those moments that it’s a job until you’re actually doing it.” Ashby’s service ended in 2013. He relocated to Central Florida, currently lives in Winter Garden and owns Allavance Insurance.

But having life-changing events become memories is especially difficult for those who lived through them. “It seems like every year, it becomes less and less important to this country,” he said of 9/11. “But things happen, generations get older, new generations pop up. And what we were part of first-

hand is, realistically, in the history books now. Even tying in with the war ending in the last few days, it’s a lot of just trying to — I wouldn’t say cope — but for me, I hope in the end it was all worth it. I hope that I did something productive.” Ashby’s record of service now includes the position of chaplain at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4305 in Winter Garden. He has helped fellow vets deal with life after service, find jobs and legal counsel and even has prevented suicides. Looking back on the past two decades, his reason for wanting to enlist remains as honest as it was on the day the towers fell. If not me, then who?

Educators, students remember 9/11 Fear, confusion and safety concerns gripped parents, students and teachers as attacks were carried out. OBSERVER STAFF

For parents, 9/11 started out as any other Tuesday. Most hurried through their early-morning routines to get their children dressed, fed and to school. Likewise for teachers: Sept. 11, 2001, was a normal day. But as the chaos unfolded, that normalcy crumbled under the weight of the news. And for everyone — teachers, administrators, parents and students — life would never be the same. “I was sitting with my fifthgrade students during chapel at Foundation Academy,” Alison Kelly said. “As teachers, we tried to keep the day normal, but it was so hard not knowing the details about what was going on in our nation.” Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins was assistant superintendent for the school district in Charlotte, North Carolina. “My secretary bolted in my office and said, ‘Turn on your TV … an airplane just flew into the World Trade Center,’” she said. “We watched in shock as the second plane crashed into the second tower. Not long after that, we were told

to leave the building for safety measures. There was a concern that Charlotte might be a target, (because) it was one of the top cities in the country for the banking industry.” Similarly, Orange County School Board District 4 Pam Gould can remember the moment she learned of the attacks. “I was in an executive team meeting at Health Central in our board room when one of our assistants ran into the room and said that a plane had hit the towers,” she said. “We turned on the television, and time seemed to stop. It changed everything.” Some parents rushed to their children’s schools to collect them. “By 1 p.m. that day, so many parents came to get their kids out of school that I was only left with three students,” kindergarten teacher Catherine Carpenter said. “It was such a horrible day for all Americans.” Rosemarie Staveley said her son wanted to go home, but she wasn’t able to leave work that day. “(I got) a call from my son’s school (stating) he was scared and wanted to come home,” she said. “(The) school (had)

big open courtyards, and he was afraid to be outside. My heart broke for him. … But I was unable to leave work and assured him he was safe at school while feeling so unsure about anything at all. That same son later enlisted in the National Guard and served a year in Kuwait.” Older students also said they

will never forget that day. “I was 21 years old in college, and I fell asleep that night with the TV on,” Nicole Stein wrote. “When I woke up, I saw one tower burning. I thought it was a movie. Got up, got a glass of water, came back to the room and saw the second hit and realized it was the news I was watching. My stomach

dropped. My heart ached. My friend and I met each other and watched the news of the day as they grounded all flights, closed up government buildings out of precaution. It was truly horrifying. I felt a deep sense that moment would change a lot of things in this world.” Mary Celano said: “I was a freshman in college at UF, and I heard someone talking about ‘an accident’ at the WTC as I was walking to a morning class. It had just happened minutes before, and we couldn’t fathom that it was an intentional act. After class, my friend and I walked home, turned on the news and watched in horror as more details were learned. We went to lunch at the sorority house and sat with a friend whose dad was working at the Pentagon that day. She was shaking waiting for a phone call to say that he was all right. Being in Florida, we felt so far away, but distance didn’t matter. It was affecting us and still does to this day.” In the years that followed, Dr. Phillips High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC program began hosting an annual 9/11 anniversary ceremony. The program honors those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks and the first responders who sprung into action on one of the darkest days of American history.

How educators teach 9/11 in the classroom Teachers say questions or concerns always should be met by honest and reassuring dialogue. JIM CARCHIDI ASSOCIATE EDITOR

affected the rest of the school year and beyond. But the desire for discussion was the same in every classroom. “There was so much uncertainty the first day,” Fana said. “On the second day, as kids were coming back, we at the school were wanting to have that dialog: ‘The important thing is we want you to express

how you’re feeling.’” Teaching at a Christian school meant Fana and the staff could use faith to reinforce their compassion and share a sense of strength. “The idea of us coming together in prayer … that faith element of being united in Christ but also unified as a country,” he said. “That carried over despite the tragedy, with

Joe Fana was one of millions of people to receive a surprise phone call on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. “My wife called me on my work phone, which she never did, and told me a plane just hit the World Trade Center,” he said. The news would have a unique impact on his job as a fourth-grade teacher. “We had to carry a calmness in the midst of tragedy,” Fana said of the mindset at his school, The First Academy. Later that morning, Jennifer Douglas had the same feeling as she returned to her thirdgrade class at Rock Springs Elementary after learning of the attacks. “There was a messenger from the office who came around and said, ‘Don’t say anything. Parents are coming to check (the students) out. We’re going to let them handle this,’” Douglas said. The tragedies of that day

the message that we’re going to be unified.” Douglas, who was teaching at a public school but now teaches at Foundation Academy, conveyed another message of hope and strength. “We could not pray, but we had moments of silence,” she said. “We did have a little bit of a discussion about what happened and tried to focus on the heroes who helped. It was that way for the next month or so, when kids had questions we would tactfully answer with facts but without fear.” The events of 9/11 have since become part of history, but they still can be topics of anxiety and fear that require attention and compassion from a new generation of educators and parents who may not remember, or had even been born on Sept. 11, 2001. “You can talk about it at any age,” said Dr. Stacy Carmichael, of Winter Garden-based MindWorks Psychological Services. “If you’re talking to elementary-schoolers … you’re not going to get into the in-depth conversations you would have with older kids. But I see a lot of kids with anxiety disorders. … Once you get one worry stuck in your head, you worry about a lot of things.” Age and learning disabilities

notwithstanding, questions or concerns always should be met by honest and reassuring dialogue. “Listen to what their worries are and normalize and validate,” Carmichael said. “‘Of course, it’s OK to be scared. It’s very normal. I was scared, too, when I watched it. I was worried that it might happen again, also.’ Talk about safety procedures, things that make you feel better. Hopefully, we can reassure them this won’t happen again.” Regardless, educators say it is imperative that the attacks are not ignored. “It’s vital that we never let our kids forget — not only for the lives lost but the lives impacted,” Fana said. “It’s the idea of remembrance but also to make sure they understand, historically, what happened.” For Douglas, the approach that worked on Sept. 12, 2001, is still valid. “The heroes, police officers, soldiers the everyday person who stepped up — that’s what we put our focus on at the elementary level,” she said. “As a teacher, you want to broach it with facts, but you don’t want to instill fear.”

Dr. Phillips volleyball player Skias Hainline announced her commitment to Trevecca Nazarene University, a Division II school in Nashville, Sunday Sept. 5. In her junior season, Hainline tied for the team lead in serving aces with 10 and was second in blocks, also with 10.

West Orange High School’s girls cross country team took third in the Winter Springs Invitational Saturday, Sept. 4. Ella Klyce took second overall, with a time of 19:42, just barely beating out teammate Ava Baldauf, who was right behind her in a personal best time of 19:43. Baldauf beat her personal best time by four seconds. The boys team took fifth at the meet.

Foundation Academy improves to 2-0 on the season after a 38-6 victory over Orangewood Christian. Running backs Noah Kapusta and J.T. Bronaugh both ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown each. Defensive linemen Edward Byrd and Reggie Jean led the defense with a combined 14 total tackles and three sacks. Jean also nabbed an interception, and Byrd had a blocked field goal. The Lions will play Seffner Christian Friday, Sept. 10, in their first home game of the season.

Dr. Phillips is getting on the same page early in the season as the Panthers adjust to a largely new squad.

r. Phillips High School’s football program has had a history of continued success since it made its debut in 1987. Notable players such as Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, Matt Milano and Marcell Harris went on to play in the NFL after wearing the Panthers uniform. Coming into the 2021 season, the Panthers have compiled a record of 102-25, an 80% winning percentage, under head coach Rodney Wells since 2012 and added a Class 8A state cham-

pionship in 2017, along with numerous other championship game appearances. But with only two defensive starters returning and several new players on offense, the Panthers inevitably were going to go through some growing pains early in the 2021 season as players got acclimated to their new roles and the speed of varsity football. Those pains were evident in the Panthers’ losses to Lake Minneola in the Preseason Kickoff Classic and Jones in week one at Camping World Stadium. Some costly SEE PANTHERS PAGE 16

Every athlete wants to get stronger. Every athlete wants to find that little extra edge to make him or her better than the rest of the compe-

tition. Strength training and conditioning work is usually the way most programs go to help build their athletes up to be the best. At Windermere Prep, that work falls under strength and conditioning coach Micah Kurtz.

During his four years with the Lakers, he has helped not only school athletes but also the entire school community. He works with middle school students, high school students and, yes, even their parents. In 2020, Kurtz received the Florida Coach of the Year award by the National High School Strength Coaches Association. He repeated the honor in 2021 as the Southeast

Region Coach of the Year. Kurtz came to Windermere Prep in 2017 after spending 10 years as the strength and conditioning coach at A.C. Flora High School in Columbia, South Carolina. He also spent time at the University of South Carolina as a graduate assistant. At first, he thought A.C. Flora SEE WPS PAGE 17

Geiliany Del Valle — or simply “G” to her friends — plays for Foundation Academy’s middle school volleyball team as a setter. In addition to the Lions, she plays on the Top Select Volleyball club team coached by her father, German. In 2019, Del Valle played in the finals of the USAV nationals and finished third at the AAU national volleyball tournament.

What do you like about going to school at Foundation Academy? I like how it feels like a family and how the staff actually cares about the students.

THE BASICS AGE: 13 NICKNAME: G SCHOOL: Foundation Academy GRADE: Eight SPORT: Volleyball POSITION: Setter

Did you like volleyball right away? I’ve been around volleyball my whole life. I didn’t want to play it at first, but when I started playing, I actually liked it.

What are some of your hobbies? I love to read. One of my favorite books is a book called Faceless.” It’s about a girl (who) goes for a jog. She gets struck by lightning, and she has to get a face transplant. It’s about how her life changes from then on.

What’s the best thing about volleyball? I like when you play getting that energy from the court, and I love being surrounded by people who like to play volleyball as well. How did you become a setter? My dad trained me to be a setter, and that’s how it started. I like to be in control of a lot of things, and I can control things around me when I set.

Favorite movie? “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2” Favorite TV or Netflix show? “Friends” Favorite food? My mom’s lasagna. It has to be my mom’s lasagna; I won’t eat anyone else’s.

What are your goals for volleyball? I hope to make it to a good D-I college and play professionally. Either the University of Florida or the University of Kentucky.

Disney or Universal? Disney. I like the Magic Kingdom, and my favorite ride is Space Mountain.

turnovers on special teams played a part in the Panthers’ 48-13 loss. “We’re not where we’re going to be, we’re not where we want to be yet, but that’s not where we’re going to be at the end of the season,” Wells said. This kind of situation is not new to Wells and the rest of the coaching staff. In 2018, the year after it won the state championship, the team started out 1-4 and was already written off by that point. That team then went on to win four of its next five games to get into the playoffs. It won two playoff games before falling to Riverview Sarasota in the third round. Although the Panthers are not quite at that stage, Wells said what defined that team is what he hopes this team can do, as well. “Those guys kept with it, stayed with the fundamentals, they didn’t believe the outside noise,” Wells said. “They kept chopping wood, like we say, and they became a really good team. You just don’t know what happens.” Panthers quarterback Curtis Argroves is one of the new starters on offense this season. While other guys are adjusting to being starters after sitting on the bench for a year or two, Argroves transferred from Lyman to DP for his senior season. Adjusting to new teammates and new coaches has been a challenge — but one he welcomes because of the quality of the program. “The atmosphere is good, the

coaches push us, and as players, we’re like a family,” Argroves said. Argroves splits playing time at quarterback with Jair Murphy, who both present a dual threat to opposing defenses. Argroves says the situational changing hasn’t disrupted the team chemistry so far on offense. “We have different play styles,” he said. “When we need one thing, I go in. And when we need another thing, he goes in. So it doesn’t really affect everybody else.” Through the first two weeks, Argroves said the slow start has only fueled the team’s motivation to get better. “It pushes us to work harder and want it more,” he said. “We keep getting better, and eventually, it’s going to click for us.” Senior Jayden Taylor is one of the few returning starters on the team. As an athlete, he’s put in whenever he’s called upon, whether it be on offense, defense or special teams. Because of that, he spends time with the players in all three phases. He believes it’s all a matter of getting on the same page. “The last two weeks — we haven’t been on the same page defensively and offensively,” Taylor said. “But as practice goes on, we’re getting better and better.” To go along with performing better in practice, Taylor is starting to see the team coming together on a more personal level. He also feels the urgency already to start turning things around as the Panthers head

into their game with Apopka this week. “We’ve got to get the ship going … for the rest of the season because our schedule is one of the hardest schedules in Central Florida,” Taylor said. “We can’t just get right for Apopka. … We’ve got to get right for everybody.” Going from being just another cog in the greater machine to, all of a sudden, being a team leader is an adjustment for any player on any team. Taylor has embraced his role as a leader and is proud of how the new starters are progressing. “They adapt very fast, and once they do, it’s like you’ve been playing with them forever,” Taylor said. During their game against Timber Creek last Friday, the Panthers dominated both sides of the ball in a 33-7 win over the Wolves. The offense ran the ball seemingly at will, with three of their touchdowns coming on the ground. As the team gets ready to play Apopka Friday Sept. 10, Wells has emphasized that improvement from week-to-week will be the key going forward for the rest of the season. “We’re looking to improve on some areas every week,” Wells said. “Sometimes as coaches, you give the kids something that an experienced group usually has — we give them a big playbook and lots of responsibility — but they haven’t mastered it yet.”

If you could be any Disney character, who would you be? Moana. I like that she has a lot of courage and she’s not really afraid. I want to be like her. Favorite non-Disney cartoon character? Spongebob Squarepants. What’s an interesting thing about you that no one else would expect to know? Before I did volleyball, I did ballet. That surprises a lot of people, because I’m a terrible dancer. — CHRIS MARTUCCI

WPS coach earns accolades Despite all this, the athletes still showed up to work out. Kurtz had as many as 120 students coming in after school for workouts and another 120 to 150 during the week. That was one of the things Kurtz said he admired in his athletes. “They haven’t said, ‘I’ll go to a private gym and have less restrictions,’” he said. “They have stayed committed and continued to train with us. They trust what we do here and are very adaptable, as well.”

would be just a stopping point before he got a job working for a D-I college, but that experience ultimately proved to be lifechanging. “I found being at the high school level, and being involved in the strength and conditioning for high school, is the best job ever,” Kurtz said. “The impact that you can have on those kids and on their entire school community is awesome. I’ve found my niche at the high school level.” At a Nike football conference in Orlando, he met someone who would eventually prove to be important: then-Windermere Prep head football coach Jacob Doss. “He was in attendance, and we just connected,” Kurtz said. “He enjoyed my presentation, and we kept in contact over the years.” One day, Doss called Kurtz with the opportunity of a lifetime — the chance to be Windermere Prep’s strength and conditioning coach. “He recruited me down here and

sold me,” Kurtz said. “I’ve always wanted to live in Florida, and it’s an awesome opportunity. It’s been a great four years.” Kurtz’s program continued to evolve over the years, but he operates his strength and conditioning program with five core elements that have remained as the guiding principles: protection from injuries; focusing on the fundamentals and moving well; strength; speed; and–most importantly–that the athletes are thriving and enjoying the workouts. “We use what we do in the weight room to thrive in all areas of life,” Kurtz said. “Our mantra here is to embrace the process of becoming the best at getting better. If you come in here every single day and try to get better, over time, you’re going to see great results. That’s in all areas of life.” When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, there was uncertainty on all sides. Kurtz knew he wanted to keep his athletes in the gym but also had to balance the new reality of sanitation and safety requirements.
