Lucky Straws Boba Tea Cafe started as a place to pop in for a refreshing drink, but a community has formed there whose visits can last for hours and sometimes get a little intense. James Nguyen opened Lucky Straws earlier this year in hopes of creating a non-intimidating destination for young people to hang out. Since then, he has achieved that ideal, with the cafe becoming a hotspot for video-game tournaments. Nguyen earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Florida and completed two combat tours overseas in the United States military, but when he returned to West Orange, he couldn’t find work. So he decided to create his own job. Looking back on his days at UF, he fondly remembered a boba tea cafe at which he was a regular customer. SEE TEA PAGE 4

OCOEE MAYOR CANDIDATE Q&A

WOTimes.com

|

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2015

3

EDITOR’S NOTE: Following longtime Ocoee Mayor S. Scott Vandergrift’s retirement in July, three candidates have entered the special election, which takes place Oct. 27. Those candidates are Ocoee City Commissioner Rusty Johnson, pastor and business owner Ronney Oliveira, and longtime resident and business owner Jim Sills. All candidates were asked the same questions. Responses have been edited according to space, not content. For full candidate answers, visit WOTIMES.COM.

RUSTY JOHNSON

AGE: 69 FAMILY: Married to Marilyn for 41 years; five children, Tim, Michelle, Mark, Lisa and Lesley; 11 grandchildren PROFESSION: Retired from U.S. Postal Service; Manheim; currently at Gosselin Realty. Sergeant in the U.S. Army and a Vietnam veteran OCOEE RESIDENT: Since 1955 BIRTHPLACE: Savannah, Georgia COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Ocoee city commissioner; charter member and president of the Ocoee Jaycees; Ocoee Little League executive board; executive board member of the Ocoee Bulldogs Pop Warner Program; president of the Ocoee Junior High Athletic Program; president of the West Orange High School Diamond Club; vice chairman of the National League of Cities Small Cities Council.

What makes you the best candidate for Ocoee mayor? I am in touch with the citizens. I spend a lot of time with citizens and in understanding what people would like to see, and I feel I have the ability to lead the way to see it accomplished. For years, we have had opportunities as a City Commission to position Ocoee to grow in a smart way, and there are several items that mayoral leadership always seemed to fall short on in the past when it came to keeping pace with growth. I have an understanding of how we can facilitate growth and, over time, lower taxes. In this time of significant growth for Ocoee and the region, how would you balance development with the many effects it produces? More development brings more people and traffic, in addition to impacting the services the city is able to provide. The key to maintaining a balance between development and its effects is sound budgeting and leveraging public and private dollars to continue our same level of service in parks, utilities, public works and other services. As a city, we have been slow to put in necessary infrastructure, and this is a main catalyst of quality development. What do you see as the future for downtown Ocoee, and what do you intend to do to help make that happen? I have long been a proponent of revitalizing the area of our historic downtown. I have already pushed for the necessary studies for beginning this revitalization in years past, and we now have several key things positioned for a major downtown redevelopment effort to occur. We are in great position to move the downtown project forward. Within plans for the future comes a consideration for history. What is important to recognize about Ocoee’s history and to preserve for future generations? My family has been in Ocoee for a long time. ... While I am all for the growth we need (for) a balanced economy, the context and character under which it occurs is very important. We have a rich agricultural heritage, and I feel we can preserve some of that through strategic economic development. If there were one thing about Ocoee you could change today, what would it be and why? I would turn the clock back and add trails, water and sewer, and build key roads that would have resulted in the same great place but one with more restaurants, shopping, entertainment and mixes of housing. We would have “grown up” (more quickly). We can catch up, and I hope to help lead this effort as mayor.

RONNEY OLIVEIRA

JIM SILLS

What makes you the best candidate for Ocoee mayor? I will apply all means necessary to improve the city and its administration. I think I differ (from) my opponents because I like to think of myself as a doer; I am going to bring a new energy to this administration. The people running this office for the past years got stuck in time. I run a business that I started from nothing. I know the cost of things and how to do business with people. I am very successful at it, and I will bring this new energy to this administration.

What makes you the best candidate for Ocoee mayor? My years as a business owner, property owner in Ocoee as well as the experience gained through serving on the various boards with the city of Ocoee and civic organizations. I have a vested interest in the community.

AGE: 43 FAMILY: Father of four PROFESSION: Founder of Total Brick Pavers, pastor OCOEE RESIDENT: Since 2002 BIRTHPLACE: Brazil COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Co-chair of the Latin American Advisory Committee of Orange County Policy Department; co-chair of the Hispanic Civic Alliance in Florida; counsel representative of Brazilians Abroad

In this time of significant growth for Ocoee and the region, how would you balance development with the many effects it produces? (No answer provided.) What do you see as the future for downtown Ocoee, and what do you intend to do to help make that happen? I have envisioned a lot of projects for this city. Such projects would help the city to grow to a level were investors would feel compelled to bring their business here. I would like first to acclimate to the new position and learn what would be the city priorities for now. But if you take a look out of the window now, you will see all these empty buildings. Why does Ocoee look closed for business? I intend to make things better and more profitable for the city. Within plans for the future comes a consideration for history. What is important to recognize about Ocoee’s history and to preserve for future generations? (No answer provided.) If there were one thing about Ocoee you could change today, what would it be and why? I would say the administration. As I see the current administration had a long time to prove themselves effective, but I don’t see this city grow as we see the neighbor towns do. This is the time to change and grow.

AGE: 71 FAMILY: Wife, Cathy; two daughters; one son; five grandchildren PROFESSION: Ocoee business owner since 1976 OCOEE RESIDENT: Since 1976 BIRTHPLACE: Dunn, North Carolina COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Former original member and chairman of COCOPD; former member and chairman of Code Enforcement; former Chairman Equity Study Commission; former chairman and current member or Planning and Zoning; current chair of Community Grant Review Board; former president and current board member for the Ocoee Lions Club; member of Winter Garden Elks Lodge; honorary member of GFWC Woman’s Club of Ocoee

In this time of significant growth for Ocoee and the region, how would you balance development with the many effects it produces? A comprehensive review of any and all projects is necessary to ensure balance is maintained even if turning down a lucrative project is the result. Growth is needed, however, it must be managed to meet the needs of all citizens. What do you see as the future for downtown Ocoee, and what do you intend to do to help make that happen? It has been discussed for years that sanitary sewer is needed for any of the vision for downtown to be realized. However, no plan has been put into action to make this happen. A study was done years ago for the lakeshore all the way to downtown that met with the approval of the property and business owners and the commission. (Because of) the size of the project, it was put on a shelf. I feel a plan needs to be put into place, and if it has to be done in phases, then that should be the course that is followed. As a downtown business and property owner, I pledge to work with other downtown business and property owners with the city to move forward to create a downtown all will be proud of. Within plans for the future comes a consideration for history. What is important to recognize about Ocoee’s history and to preserve for future generations? Ocoee was known as a stopping point and vacation area in the day. It is still and can continue to be with the proximity to the attractions and major highways. The Friends of the Withers Maguire House group plays a vital role in keeping the history and heritage of Ocoee alive. If there were one thing about Ocoee you could change today, what would it be and why? Perception of developers that choosing Ocoee is cost prohibitive and Ocoee is difficult to impossible to work with. Much commercial development has passed by Ocoee (because of) to this stigma. The growth in surrounding cities could lend some truth to this perception. I would like to work diligently with staff, commission, community relations to revamp or possibly make some changes to ordinances or policies in place before Ocoee is completely overlooked with the exception of gas stations and fast-food locations.

My dear Dr. Albert Gleason Today, you are gone from us; my heart sinks into a deep sadness. While the words are slow to come, my soul stirs and is full of emotion. I know you were aware of just how much you meant to me and my family. We shared these thoughts many times. Our community has suffered a tremendous loss. However, you leave behind a body of work that continues to live on in service to those people who now and still continue to call Winter Garden, West Orange County, home. I will take with me the many stories you shared of the early beginnings of our little corner of the world. Many times I begged you to please let me write those stories down. Your response was always, “Nobody is interested in that stuff, of days gone by.” I pray I will retain many of those stories,

called “history” now. I never had such a friend, employer and mentor; you were an original. Lessons of life, friendship, ethics and medicine you shared with me — and so much more. I often find myself quoting some pearls of wisdom, rules in the road of life you shared with me, and they were jewels. You

told me many times, “Interest is the key to memory.” When I began to apply that in a personal way, it was an eyeopener. I soon decided that if I did not remember something, I had not been interested in the person speaking or the information being relayed. And that was not only disrespectful to them; I did myself no good

in the process. I loved the time and conversations we shared when I would come to visit. You told me in recent visits I was going to have to let you go. We laughed over my standard answer, “You will have to submit the request in writing, in triplicate and have it approved in advance,” You asked me if that was more “government intervention.” Always that was followed by our usual list of funnies collected and shared over the years. I only hope that when the angels came for you, they left a very bright star in the sky for the gem they took away. You will be respected, revered, loved and missed for all my days. There will never be another like you.

DRAMATIC DIABETIC 16000 block of West Colonial Drive. Drunken driving. An officer received a call at 6:47 p.m. about a drunken driver at a gas station from the driver’s daughter. The driver nearly hit the curb as she exited the lot. Swerving prompted a traffic stop. The driver said she was not drunken, just tired and diabetic, despite alcohol odors on her breath. She said her blood sugar was fine and she “just wanted to go back to (her) vehicle, eat some doughnuts and go home.” The officer asked her to do sobriety exercises. She asked why and became agitated, saying she disliked the idea. When asked again, she said yes. She listed medication she could not afford and a hip she injured in 1988 as medical conditions before saying she had bread and butter a while ago “but that is why I bought the doughnuts.” During the eye test, she kept moving her head, yelling, “You are hurting me!” When asked how, she said, “The fat between my legs is hurting when I stand this way.” The officer demonstrated a comfortable stance. She kept interrupteing walk-and-turn instructions, starting five times and yelling, “God — why are you hurting me? Just let me go home.” She said her hip would prevent her from a one-leg stand. When asked whether she could stand on the other leg, she said she did not know because she just wanted to go home. She raised her good leg but immediately put it down. The officer asked why she stood on her hurt leg. She shouted, “I know my own body!” She lifted the good leg for 11 seconds but then put down her foot and began arguing with the officer. She was about to vomit and had low blood sugar, she said. When EMTs arrived, she angrily shouted she wanted an ambulance, not fire rescue. She threw herself on the ground and cried, saying EMTs hurt her, although no official touched her. She said, “You just want to test my blood. Take me to the hospital. I want the doctors to test my blood.” She screamed for medical attention before officers arrested her on DUI charges and took her to a hospital. On her hospital bed, she just kept saying, “You’re a liar,” for minutes, before the officer declared refusal and she fell asleep.

“I realized that in Winter Garden, there’s no place like that,” Nguyen said. “There’s really no place for college-age individuals to actually go and have a meaningful conversation.” Barnes & Noble had recently closed, Starbucks was too busy, and the library was too quiet, he said. And not everyone can or wants to drink alcohol at a bar. With his college boba tea cafe in mind, Nguyen decided to build a fun, welcoming place for young people to socialize. The concept, Lucky Straws, became a reality in February. The cafe can be difficult to find if you haven’t seen it before. There is no sign above

the door, because Nguyen paid $1,500 to a sign designer who never followed through on the work order. But there is one group of customers who don’t need a sign to know where they’re going. They pack the cafe every weekend for Super Smash Bros. tournaments. The couches, TVs and small stage contribute to the ideal environment for such an event. “It’s a really good group of people, and it’s the best venue in Florida, for sure,” said Lucas Lamoureux, who has been participating in the tournaments and streaming them online. “It’s really relaxing.” The tournament at Lucky Straws has grown to about 30 consistent competitors who play at the cafe, in addition to others who join online. Some of the top seven players in the state have gone to Lucky Straws to play. “Truly, this is not me at all; the community has done this,” Nguyen said. WHAT IS BOBA TEA?

Boba tea, or bubble tea, is a craze that started in Taiwan in the 1980s and has since become popular worldwide. It is a cold tea- or fruit-based drink with tapioca “pearls” or different flavors of jelly cubes. The pearls or jellies are sucked up through an extra-wide straw. There are virtually endless options when it comes to boba tea. Lucky Straws has more than 25 flavors, from strawberry to pomegranate, lychee to mango, almond to lavender and more.

Winter Garden church celebrates new digs JENNIFER NESSLAR

WHEN: 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11

Connecting the reality of God to the reality of life. That’s the mission statement of The Crossings Church. The church wants the reality of God that people experience at church to merge with the reality of life, which happens outside the church walls. In The Crossings Church’s 10 years of existence, members have served and been out in the community. But, while meeting at Windermere Seventh-day Adventist Church on McKinnon Road, they felt the challenge of meeting their mission. It was hard to connect the reality of God to the reality of life when the community didn’t know they were there. “You know what people would say about us once they got to know us here? ‘You’re the bestkept secret’,” Joy Tewson, the director of special events at the church, said. “We don’t want to be the best-kept secret. Because we’ve done so much in the community, and it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s you guys?’” Soon, their visibility problems will be greatly reduced. The Crossings Church will hold its first service Oct. 11 in its own building, 13105 W. Colonial Drive,

“We don’t want to be the best-kept secret. Because we’ve done so much in the community, and it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s you guys?’”

Ron Tewson, Joy Tewson, Marcio Pacheco and Kristin Slack hold a staff meeting in the lobby of the new Crossings Church building.

will not be open seven days a week at the beginning, but The Crossings Church hopes to grow it into a Starbucks-type of space that encourages gathering. Four years ago, the church started an “It’s Time” campaign to raise money for a new building. But it can’t even quantify the cost of it all, because so much of what is the in the building was donated supplies, time and labor. Volunteers set up the wood designs on the walls. The flooring was donated, and so was much of the paint for the walls. A carpenter took a week of vacation to donate his time and run cables. A painter donated his time to sand and paint all 53 doors in the new building. It’s how The Crossings Church operates. There are a few staff members, but much of the work gets done with the help of volunteers. The new building features a children’s area, kitchen, lobby, worship center with a stage

Winter Garden, the location of the old Kmart. But don’t get them wrong. The staff at The Crossings believes the church is not a building, and they have existed happily without one. But having a building will help them more easily connect the community to the reality of God. “We were doing fine, but we just absolutely couldn’t fulfill our purpose for why we exist,” Ron Tewson said. The 19,000-square-foot building is set in a busy location at a strip plaza, a location Ron believes places them more in the center of reality than a more picturesque location would. The church staff hopes the visibility of the location will bring people into the church and also more recognition to it. They also plan to offer the new facility as a location to serve the community. The lobby area of the church is intended to be more than a walkway to the service. The staff plans to add WiFi to the room, so community members can spend time there during the week. The room

Dominic Gaudious performs five nights a week in Disney Springs.

DIDGERIDOO DIY

Dominic Gaudious’ first didgeridoo was one he made on his own with materials easily found at any hardware store. Here’s a simple tutorial that you can follow to create yours. MATERIALS n One segment of 1.5-inch-diameter PVC pipe between 5 and 6 feet long. Shorter pipes will have a higher pitch; longer pipes will have a lower pitch. n One 1.5-inch female-female coupler piece n One bushing, either 1-inch or 1.5inch wide. This is for the mouthpiece, so the diameter depends on your preference. INSTRUCTIONS n Clean the cut edges of the PVC pipe. Semi-attached fragments of plastic that remain after cutting could impede your airways. They can be shaved off with a pocketknife or similar tool. n Assemble the instrument by placing the coupling firmly onto the end of the pipe and then fitting the bushing into the coupling. Didgeri-dude CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13

Now, he plays both simultaneously while using effects and loops to provide audience members the experience of hearing a full world-beat band. His MusicFest performance will be at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. The didgeridoo is a wind instrument developed by indigenous people of northern Australia, potentially as long as 1,500 years ago. It is described as a natural wooden trumpet or drone pipe. Authentic Aboriginal didgeridoos are made from hardwood — usually eucalyptus, which is endemic in the region. To play the didgeridoo, musicians must be able to continuously vibrate their lips while vocalizing and using the technique of circular breathing, which requires simultaneous inhalation through the nose and exhalation from the mouth. “You’re using your falsetto, mostly, and making cool little sounds — animal noises,” Gaudious said. “I think it’s one of the most therapeutic instruments that you can play.” In the early 1990s, Gaudious, a rock musician, was living in Chicago and working as a broker for a health food company. One seemingly normal day at work, his musical direction changed forever. A man walked into the office blowing into a plastic golf club tube. Gaudious asked what he was doing, and the man said he had made his own didgeridoo. Gaudious loved the sound and was inspired to make one for himself out of PVC pipe. “I haven’t looked back since,” Gaudious said. “I was captivated by the sound of it. It’s got such an earthy, ethereal sound.” Gaudious eventually upgraded to a more traditional instrument made of wood and worked his way to the ability to play didgeridoo and guitar simultaneously. This sound, inspired by both his rock background and

ONLINE

Aboriginal traditions, became a niche that not many other musicians were filling in the United States. In 1995, Gaudious quit his job and started touring the country, playing at colleges, bookstores, coffee shops and other venues. “I just decided I wanted to do music, and I’ve only done music ever since,” he said. His music has been featured on major national media such as NPR and Fox TV. He has also earned numerous awards and recorded 11 albums, including his most recent, “The Dominic Didgeridoo Express,” which earned the title of Best Funk CD in 2015 by the Akademia Music Awards. But the most likely place that Central Floridians have seen Gaudious perform is in Disney Springs, where he plays from 7 to 11 p.m. Sundays through Wednesdays, in front of the Harley-Davidson store near Planet Hollywood. “It’s been the most amazing gig ever — so much fun,” he said. “Every single night, people ask me … ‘What in the world is that thing?’” Gaudious meets people from all over the world when he performs. Many are not familiar with the didgeridoo, but some are — particularly, tourists from Australia. “Usually, people from Australia are polite and say that I do a good job combining the didgeridoo with the guitar, and my music is unique, and they enjoyed it,” Gaudious said. Others occasionally tell him they don’t think he should be playing the instrument as someone who is not of Aboriginal descent. “I apologize and say I mean no disrespect, and mention how much I love the instrument and learning about their culture,” Gaudious said. Dated July 2, 1940, this postcard from Polly Brenner to Mr. and Mrs. F. Kaiser of Milwaukee is inscribed: “Hello, This is where we are spending a few days and money.” We’re wondering which “country drive”

is depicted — could it be old Highway 22, once known as Washington Street (now Story Road), that made its way to Winter Garden from Orlando? In the 1940s, when Lake Apopka was still known as the “large-mouth bass capi-

tal” and famous worldwide, Polly and company might have lodged in the Edgewater Hotel, or perhaps even Trailer City, to relax in town and try their hand at fishing.

SIDELINES

County plans Horizon West sports complex No timetable is set for a huge multipurpose new rec facility on Tiny Road in Horizon West. GIRLS GOLF WINS METRO The West Orange Warriors girls golf team concluded a big week with a dominant performance in the Metro West Girls Golf Tournament Sept. 30 at Windermere Country Club. The Warriors placed first, compiling a 306 on the day — 63 strokes ahead of Dr. Phillips, which placed second with a 369. Olympia placed fourth with a 435. Individually, West Orange was led by Janelle Sicguendo’s 75 (par 72), Aly Moya’s 76 and Linna Brooks’ 77. Brooks recently announced she would be golfing in college for UNC-Asheville.

BOWLER SETS RECORD Ocoee junior bowler Wanya Mitchell set a school record Sept. 30 with a 718 series in a victory over Evans. His second game of the match saw the standout roll a nearperfect 299. The Knights are 5-2 on the season.

WARRIORS TOP TITANS The West Orange volleyball team had to dig deep in a rivalry match against Olympia on Oct. 1 after falling behind and losing the first two sets. The Warriors managed to win the next three sets to score the 3-2 victory (21-25, 1725, 25-16, 25-20, 15-10) and improve to 18-3. Stephanie Garner had 27 assists, 10 digs and six kills, and Paige Gravely added 13 assists and five digs. Olympia High fell to 16-4.

RECORD: 5-1, 1-0 district THE BUZZ: A humbling loss at Trinity Christian keeps the Warriors from earning an A+, but you can’t knock West Orange too much when it already has signature wins over Dr. Phillips and Apopka — with the latter coming on the road. The Warriors’ sound 28-3 defeat of the Blue Darters Oct. 2 has put teams around the state on notice. HOME STRETCH: With the win over the Blue Darters, West Orange is in the driver’s seat in

Class 8A District 4. The Warriors should have no trouble with Evans, which is still winless, meaning West Orange’s game at Wekiva on Oct. 30 likely will have home-field advantage in the state playoffs at stake.

HORIZON WEST A mega sports complex plan with ideation origins from Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs’ time as District 1 Orange County commissioner is waiting for a crew to pick up its tools and get to work on Tiny Road, just south of Winter Garden and east of State Road 429. Jacobs heard surplus land at this site had become available, so based on the growth Horizon West was starting to show, designs for this complex to serve the community began taking shape in 2005 or 2006, Orange County Parks Manager Matt Suedmeyer said. “It’s in an area of the county that’s growing the most, so there’s a lot of need for youth and adult sports in this area due to all the growth,” he said. Based on local climate and its proximity to theme parks and major attractions, the complex would be for major regional tournaments, not just local sports and downtime, Suedmeyer said. Officials have overseen a feasibility study and hired a consultant to examine demand. Results showed a plan for 16 large gridiron and diamond fields. “The next thing is to find the money to build it,” he said. “We’ve come up with an estimated cost — depending on the amenities and everything — of about $35 million to $45 million over many years.” The county INVEST program Jacobs unveiled this June includes $20 million for enhanced parks and recreation facilities such as this, $17.5 million of which will be leveraged for matching funds from private, not-for-profit and government agencies, Suedmeyer said. The other $2.5 million is budgeted for the West Orange Relief High School stadium. Parks staff is working with local developers and large corporations to figure out how to fund the project and when physical construction could begin.

John Mondesir caught the only touchdown for the Knight offense against Hagerty, one of his several catches for double-digit yardage.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

SPONSORED BY MARK’S FLOORS

Antonio Vargas Ocoee Knights senior linebacker Antonio Vargas scored the winning touchdown during Ocoee’s Sept. 25 28-8 victory over East Ridge — an important district victory for the Knights. Vargas blocked a punt, scooped the ball and ran for a touchdown. It was his second recovery in as many weeks.

What are your post-high school plans? I want to go to college. I’m trying to put my name out there in the papers and go from there.

What was going through your mind during that touchdown? Picking it up, scooping and scoring, like coach (Ben Bullock) was always dogging on us, saying we got to scoop and score, the defense got to step it up. We got to do it.

What’s your favorite thing about being a linebacker? You can read everything. You can come down and hit. That’s what I like — I like to hit.

How did you feel after, knowing that was the winning touchdown? It felt good. It was like we’d been practicing every day for it. Practicing punt blocks and everything. It was just our hard practice. The Ocoee defense has played well of late. What are your hopes for the defense going forward? Hopefully, we keep on doing it. We have been making progress every day, every practice. We’ve been coming out here early practicing really hard. We have that bond together. What are your hopes for the team, overall, during the rest of this season? I hope — well, I won’t say I hope — we are going to the playoffs. We’re going to work twice as hard; we’re going to practice harder. We’re going to come out here every day, work hard and be successful.

Bollinger’s breakout season sparks Warriors defense on this football team and that feeling of them losing to Apopka last year rubbed off on me,” Bollinger said. “Because of them, I could never have them feel that again.” Even the biggest supporter of West Orange likely did not predict that the Warriors would hold the Blue Darters, who had been averaging 40 points per game, to just one field goal. Head coach Bob Head acknowledged afterward that it was his team’s best defensive performance in recent memory and praised Bollinger for being a big part of it. “He dominated,” Head said of his senior safety. “Ben was the heart and soul of our defense tonight. The perimeter play from him — tackling those kids from Apopka in space is not easy. I’m really excited about the way he played.” For Bollinger, undoubtedly a rising star for the Warriors’ defense, understanding that loss is even more important now after the victory. While West Orange’s players celebrated on Friday after the surprisingly dominant win, they all seem to understand the fleeting nature the celebration must take. There’s a good chance they could run into the Blue Darters again in this year’s regional semifinals, and the last thing anyone in Winter Garden wants is for history to repeat itself. Bollinger’s name has become a familiar one for publicaddress announcers at Warrior games — he seems to be involved in nearly every tackle for West Orange. Although

recruiting hasn’t picked up just yet, one can only expect that such a performance for a team ranked among the best in the state will not go on without some increased interest from Division I suitors. Explaining his knack for tracking down ball carriers, Bollinger smiles and credits good genes. “It’s a little bit of blood,” the standout safety said. “Football is in my blood, and I’ve kind of just got a nose for the ball.”

109 and are 3-1 on the season. The 200-meter medley relay team placed first, as did the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle relay teams. Individually, Linnea Holmgren (200-meter

medley), Sarah Passilla (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter fly) and Elizabeth Cottle (100-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke) also won their respective events.

Do you have any dream schools? UF. I’d definitely go to UF.

Why did you decide to play football? My parents, they were like, I got to do some sports. I decided to follow in my brother’s footsteps. And then he got me into it more. Every day, he’d be practicing with me. Do you play any other sports besides football? No. I played baseball my freshman year. How long ago did you start playing football? Way back, when I was in Pop Warner. I was 6 or 7. What’s your favorite sport to support at Ocoee? I like to support the soccer team. They’ve been practicing really hard. I see them out here in the heat, running. In your spare time, what do you like to do? Usually I go home and watch Hudl. I watch my players and the other school’s players. What do you hope to study in college? Business. I would like to start my own business. What kind of business would you like to start? Construction — like a whole lot of house-building. How do you pump up for a game? I do a little speech with my brothers. We get them together, start watching Hudl. We come together. — JENNIFER NESSLAR

STEVEN RYZEWSKI SIDELINE SCENE APOPKA Ben Bollinger wasn’t

a member of the West Orange football team a season ago when, after beating Apopka for the first time in years during the regular season, it was dismembered by the Blue Darters when it mattered most — a 42-0 loss in the state playoffs. Bollinger, who transferred to West Orange after playing for Winter Springs, wasn’t around for the infamous night now etched in so many of the Warriors’ memories. But he still understands its significance. As the team was preparing for its game on Oct. 2 at Apopka, Bollinger said he came to understand just how much that loss a season ago has haunted his teammates since then. It was an understanding he put to good use as he was all over the field during the Warriors’ 28-3 thumping of the Blue Darters — recording 11 tackles and helping to ignite the defense’s best performance to date. “As soon as I came here, just a brotherhood sparked between me and every kid

The boys team’s 175-109 victory was especially significant, because Timber Creek is defending champion in its district. WEST ORANGE 28, APOPKA 3 After Apopka kicked a field goal in the first quarter, the West Orange defense held the Blue Darters — who had been averaging 39.4 points per game this fall — scoreless the rest of the way. Woody Barrett rushed for two touchdowns. The Warriors are 5-1 overall and 1-0 in district competition.

JORDAN CHRISTIAN PREP (3-2) AT FOUNDATION ACADEMY (2-4), 7 P.M. FRIDAY

THE BUZZ: The Lions celebrate Homecoming by welcoming first-year program to Winter Garden. SCOUTING REPORT: Although it’s hard to gauge how good Jordan Christian is given its lopsided results in victory and defeat, there has to be a feeling that Foundation should have the upper hand against a first-year program. Look for the Lions to lean on their running game, which has amassed 497 yards in the past two weeks. IN OTHER ACTION

THE BUZZ: This pivotal district game figures to keep one team’s hopes of a playoff berth alive while dashing those of the other. SCOUTING REPORT: West Port is averaging a paltry 8.6 points per game, meaning Ocoee’s defense, which has been tasked with handling two elite rushers in its past two games, should be in better shape this time around. If the Knights’ offense can sustain drives, the team likely gets back to .500 overall and in district play. Bye — Legacy (4-2)

FOUNDATION ACADEMY 42, CORNERSTONE CHARTER 7 After losing four games to begin the season, Foundation has won two in a row. The Lions’ victory over Cornerstone has them at 1-0 in district play, 2-4 overall. Jacob Murphy threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and Jordan Richards amassed 14 tackles. OCOEE — Momentum was going Ocoee’s way on Homecoming Oct. 2, when it hosted Hagerty and scored 10 straight points to cut its halftime deficit to four points. An in-sync offense that was doing all but scoring in the first half struggled in the third quarter, when Ocoee quarterback Steve Hogan followed a near-interception with another incomplete pass on third and 13 from his 30-yard line. At least, that is what the Knights (2-3, 1-2) thought. Officials converged and then determined the Ocoee receiver had caught the pass and fumbled, with the Huskies (3-2, 2-1) recovering. “That’s always going to take the wind out of your sails a little bit, but with a sudden change defensively, you’ve got to be ready to play and be able to stop them when that happens,” head coach Ben Bullock said. “That’s the sign of a great defense and a true playoff team. Those things are going to happen.” On the next play, Curtis Duren caught the winning touchdown with 4:44 left in the third quarter, just as the rain was subsiding.

HAGERTY 28, OCOEE 17 Jamel Hyatt’s long kickoff return for a touchdown sparked Ocoee to 10 unanswered points to enter halftime down four, but that was as close as the Knights could get to Hagerty. The Huskies capitalized on consecutive turnovers late in the third quarter for a 28-17 final. Ocoee is now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in Class 7A, District 4.

Jamel Hyatt led Ocoee’s rushing tack and also had a kick return for a touchdown against Hagerty.

But for Ocoee, a drizzle of mistakes became a storm. A sack on third and eight forced another three-and-out. Then the Huskies blocked the punt attempt, plunging into the end zone from the Ocoee 2 on the next play to make it 28-10 just like that, still 2:25 left in the quarter.

Dora Christian 0-6 ing catchup with three district games left. Although Ocoee has improved on offense, it is still averaging only 15.6 points per contest and will need to do better down the stretch. HOME STRETCH: Games in the next two weeks against West Port (at home) and at Lake Howell — two teams at the bottom of the district race — should give the Knights a golden opportunity to improve to 3-2 in district play ahead of what could be a pivotal showdown against Lake Minneola Oct. 30. A loss in either of those games, though, likely ends Ocoee’s postseason hunt.

RECORD: 2-4, 1-0 district THE BUZZ: The Lions started the season with four consecutive losses, but wins in the two weeks since have helped get Foundation back on track. Through the struggles, the Lions have seen stellar performances from the likes of Jacob Murphy, Gabe Walker, Evan Thompson and Konrie Brown. HOME STRETCH: The Lions’ most recent win against Cornerstone Charter was a district contest. That means that, at 1-0 in a four-team district, Foundation needs to win against either Victory Christian or Agape Christian to secure a return to the state playoffs.

LEGACY CHARTER — B+

RECORD: 4-2 THE BUZZ: Despite losing a lot of its playmakers from a season ago, Legacy Charter has somehow had a better start to the 2015 season than it did in 2014. At 4-2, the Eagles are right in the thick of the race for runner-up in their division. A loss to Orangewood may haunt Legacy, but for now, the Eagles will continue to lean on their two-quarterback approach. HOME STRETCH: Legacy needs to win its remaining two regularseason games and hope CFCA drops a contest along the way.

SURPRISE STARS Here are four breakout players so far this season.

JEMERH COSBY Running back, Ocoee (Sr.) The senior running back has gotten a steady workload, and his two touchdowns against East

Ridge were a big part of Ocoee’s biggest win so far this season. talented Foundation alum Conrad Brown, Konrie has become a do-it-all sort of player for the Lions this fall. Brown is second on the team in rushing to Gabe Walker and is tops for Foundation as a receiver. Brown also has contributed 27 tackles and four sacks on defense.
