rating candidates Rusty Johnson and Jim Sills, the election for Ocoee’s next mayor will go to a
Nov. 24 runoff election. According to unofficial results on the Orange County Supervisor of Elections website, Johnson received 1,186 votes (47.86%), giving him slim lead over Sills’
1,066 votes (43.02%). Ronney Oliveira received 226 votes (9.12%). However, with three candidates running, Johnson would have had to receive at least 50% of the votes
to be declared the winner. With 2,478 votes cast, that means he needed only 53 more votes. “It was a good race,” Johnson SEE MAYOR PAGE 4 Courtesy photo

voting 4-1 to restore the practice of opening each City Commission meeting with a prayer, Winter Garden resident Edward Lynch opened the Oct. 22 meeting with the city’s first non-religious invocation. Two days before this meeting, Andrew Seidel, an attorney for the Freedom From Religion Foun-
dation, sent Mayor John Rees a letter about the city’s invocation policy. Seidel wrote: “We understand that Winter Garden’s City Commission now has a diversity of speakers on its list of invocators, including atheists and other non-religious viewpoints, but that thus far all invocations have been Christian.” Seidel said the foundation currently was in litigation against Brevard County regarding this issue, along with the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church & State. Ocoee Police Officer Trista Blake received her breast cancer diagnosis in July. Now, she is off road duty until she finishes her treatments.

Ocoee charter school loses right to purchase property The developer of the CSUSA charter school now must look elsewhere in the city and county.
AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE COMMUNITY EDITOR OCOEE Ocoee Police
Officer Trista Blake is a private person, so it wasn’t easy for her to share the news of her breast cancer diagnosis with her co-workers. This place is more of a second home to her, though, and she discovered it was like opening up to members of her family. Blake has been an Ocoee officer for five years, but she has been involved with the city’s police department since she joined the Police Explorers post at age 14. Several of the Explorers and supervisors are now her co-workers. Two tumors were discovered in her right breast July 21, and two days later, she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. Furthermore, she tested positive for BRCA2, a gene mutation that had put her at a high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Her ovaries and breasts would need to be removed, she said. Married to a former Ocoee police officer, Richard Blake, for six years and trying to get pregnant for four, Trista Blake often had dreams that she would have a curly-haired baby with blue or green eyes. She went to a fertility specialist prior to starting chemotherapy treatments in hopes of freezing some eggs. One embryo — a boy — was saved and is waiting on ice, she said, until her body is ready to withstand a pregnancy. If she ends up losing her uterus too, her best friend has said she will carry the baby for her.

A NEW PATH
Last month, Blake, 32, had a lumpectomy. She began chemo. She lost her hair. Every 21 days, the Lake County resident and 2002 West Orange High School graduate has another round of chemotherapy. In January 2016, she will begin monthly treatments until July. She sits for two, sometimes three, hours at a time, but a few fellow officers join her and share laughter and chocolate. “I’ve been supported a lot,” Blake said. “I’m kind of a private person, and it’s hard to accept help, but I’ve learned to, because they love me. I know that.” She hasn’t lost much work time, but she was taken off road duty and placed at a desk because her bulletproof vest was pressing against her healing chest. Blake said she misses patrolling her district, the area near Walmart and along South Maguire Road. She is so established in her zone that she knows where cars are normally parked, who walks their dog at night, who typically keeps the garage door open — if anything is out of the ordinary, Blake will know. “I love my community,” Blake said. “All I wanted to do was to serve here, and I wanted to be on the road. And I was able to do that.”

By having her breasts and ovaries removed, Trista Blake will have a better chance of recovery.
She wasn’t ready to give up walking her beat and seeing the children; she doesn’t like that she had to alter the routine of checking on an 84-year-old resident — one she now considers a friend and frequent dinner companion. And she’s upset that her solid game plan for life has been disrupted. “How the hell do I do this now?” she asks. “That was the hardest part; the plan had changed.” No more boxing, tennis, lifting weights and other activities she enjoyed. But she is learning to enjoy what she is able to do, such as cardiovascular workouts and walking.
“The rough-andtumble guys are asking how she is, does she need money? And then they punch her in the arm on the way out.” Ocoee Police Det. Michelle Grogan, Blake’s former Explorer adviser
SHOW OF SUPPORT
The police department and friends have organized fundraisers to help with the Blake family’s mounting medical bills. One was held recently at Frank’s Place in Ocoee, and several bingo nights are being held at the Winter Garden Elks Lodge 2165. The OPD is selling $20 pink T-shirts with the phrase, “Our strength is their hope,” and they can be purchased by calling Sgt. Mireya Iannuzzi at (407) 554-7197. Donations also can be made at gofundme.com/pf5wxbg2. Following 12 months of chemo, Blake will have both of her breasts removed and then undergo reconstructive surgery. And through this entire ordeal, Blake is keeping her thoughts on the healthy baby boy she one day
expects to have. Lake Tech Police Academy, where Blake trained, already has raised $9,000 toward expenses related to carrying and delivering the Blakes’ first child. “I think it’s amazing,” Blake said of the support she has received. “When you think about it, you want to cry.” Ocoee Police Det. Michelle Grogan, who was Blake’s Explorer adviser, said as females, it’s easier to show a sensitive side. “But the rough-and-tumble guys are asking how she is, does she need money?” she said. “And then they punch her in the arm on the way out.” Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@wotimes.com.
who attended the Oct. 20 Ocoee City Commission meeting had a difficult time holding in their applause as developers of the CSUSA Charter School lost their right to purchase the property located along Clarke Road and Ocoee Vista Parkway. The developer’s contract had an inspection period that was set to expire last Friday. The developer, to obtain the special exception for school use, had asked for an extension of the inspection period until Nov. 3 and also requested to move the special exception hearing to Nov. 3. Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen made a motion to vote on the extension of the contract — but it failed as it did not receive a second. Wilsen wanted to hear what charter school officials had to say, because she thought a school could be a better alternative than seeing apartments or highdensity development come on the property in the future. “I made the motion because I wanted to give the charter school an opportunity to come forward,” she said. “Hopefully they had listened to what you had said. We come forward with some other information.” Because the contract was not extended, developers lost the right to purchase the property. “Are we allowed to applaud in here?” someone called from the audience. Other audience members stood up and looked at Commissioner Joel Keller. “Joel, will you tell us if it comes back? And will you stand by your district?” “I will let you know if it comes back,” Keller said. “Absolutely. Notice I didn’t second it. That’s why it’s dead.” Todd Lucas, of Summit Construction Management, the developer of the project, was surprised by the decision because he felt the commission had reacted positively to the location of the charter school. “It’s disappointing because there is definitely a need in that market for the children of that area,” he said. Cheryl King, a Prairie Lake Reserve resident, was among the Ocoee residents who came out in opposition of the charter school. She was concerned about the safety of building the school in that location. “It became a safety issue,” she said. “One-thousand, onehundred and forty-five students is a lot of kids in a rather small area. And the road that they wanted to use (Ocoee Vista Parkway) is already very dangerous for us living on it.” King felt that a hard right-hand
IN OTHER NEWS n The Crystal Investments Assisted Living Facility and Ocoee Landings both received rezoning approvals. Commissioners also approved the land use plan and the development agreement for both properties. The Crystal Investments Assisted Living Facility, located on the northwest corner of Silver Star Road and Ridgefield Avenue, will be home to a one-story, 60-bed assisted living facility and memory care unit. Ocoee Landings, located on the northeast corner of Silver Star Road and Lake Johio Drive, will be a mixed-use development with 9.15 acres of residential property as well as 6.89 acres of commercial property. n The commission approved the final payment of $77,500 for the entertainment at the 2015 Founders’ Day Celebration.
turn onto Ocoee Vista Parkway, the road becoming a two-lane road and the fire department also using that road made the area unsuitable for the proposed charter school. Lucas said the company already had done work to ensure the entrance would be safe. “We had looked at two options — one was an entrance directly off of Clarke Road and one was Ocoee Vista Parkway, and our conversations with the city and discussions that were coming off Ocoee Vista Parkway were 100% based on professional licensed traffic engineers and extensive studies and surveys of traffic patterns and other things as well as meeting with the city’s traffic engineers to make sure they were in agreement also,” Lucas said. “Even to the point that we had already agreed to put a traffic light in at that intersection, which would definitely improve the overall situation.” The charter school has been approved by Orange County, so the developer is looking at options within the county but would like the school to be in Ocoee. “We give back to the schools in the community, and we are absolutely in this business for the children,” Lucas said of his company. “It’s too bad, because it really is about the kids, and it’s a very important thing to us and to everyone within our company, so we’re hoping we can find the right location to help this area.” Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@wotimes.com.

Now, it’s just getting people to go back out and vote, and it’s right at Thanksgiving.” Sills said he is concerned with the added costs the runoff election will require. “I’m always trying to save the city money, and this runoff is going to cost the city more money,” he said. “We could be spend-
ing that money on sidewalks or paving streets. The voters came out, but it was a very low turnout; it wasn’t the best day in terms of weather. ... I ran a grassroots campaign. I didn’t go after the big contributors but did a lot of it myself. I walked the streets and talked to a lot of folks.” Johnson, 69, is a longtime Ocoee city commissioner and an Ocoee resident since 1955. His community involvement also includes serving as a charter member and president of the Ocoee Jaycees; member of the Ocoee Little League executive
board; executive board member of the Ocoee Bulldogs Pop Warner Program; president of the Ocoee Junior High Athletic Program; president of the West Orange High School Diamond Club; and vice chairman of the National League of Cities Small Cities Council. Sills, 71, has been an Ocoee business owner and resident since 1976. He is a former original member and chairman of COCOPD; former member and chairman of Code Enforcement; former chairman of the Equity Study Commission; former
chairman and current member of Planning and Zoning; current chair of the Community Grant Review Board; former president and current board member for the Ocoee Lions Club; member of the Winter Garden Elks Lodge; and an honorary member of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Ocoee. District 1 Commissioner John Grogan has been serving as mayor since S. Scott Vandergrift stepped down in July. After the runoff, he will return to his commission seat. City opens with non-religious invocation CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Winter Garden resident Joseph Richardson, whose removal from a City Commission meeting last year for refusing to stand during the invocation and pledge became national news, said: “I personally appreciate the fact that after 14 meetings you have finally invited a non-religious person. It is a step in the right direction. It is just unfortunate that it has taken this long and necessitated more complaining and another letter from FFRF to get here.” Richardson concluded his remarks in the meeting by saying: “We are not going away; we will only grow in numbers and in strength, and we have the law on our side.” Commissioner Colin Sharman said Lynch was his friend and that the decision to have him deliver the invocation was made independent of Seidel’s letter. “No letter made my decision to do this invocation,” he said. He said he had not heard of or seen Seidel’s letter. David Williamson, of the Central Florida Freethought Community, the local affiliate of the FFRF, said to commissioners during the meeting: “While concerns remain, we recognize you are making corrections. ... Today, our message is one of gratitude.”

The Phillips’ love for Disney extends beyond selling items. Tom’s first visit to Disney was before the parks even opened. He visited the Disney preview center in 1970. When he married Diana, the couple lived in California and Chicago but came to Florida for vacation. During one trip, when they were checking into a hotel, Diana looked into a room where people gathered around a collection of Disney items. They learned it was a Disneyana convention. The next year, the Phillipses registered for the convention. During a break, they walked into a lounge to find people trading pins. “From that point on, we both got hooked,” Tom said. In Chicago, the Phillipses joined the Windy City Pin Traders. They moved to the Orlando area in 2005 and formed a group that traded pins at a pizza shop in Clermont. The trip home was still hard, 23 years later. Cathy Tobin, a teacher at Montessori of Winter Garden Charter School, rode on the bus from her hometown of Cork to Dublin, on her way home to Orlando. It was the first time she returned home because of the death of loved one. “The pull of home has not gotten any less,” she said. Feeling emotional, she pulled out her laptop and started to write. By the end of the bus ride, she had completed a piece she called “Leaving Cork.” She decided to pitch the piece to an Irish newspaper, the Irish Examiner. Her brother suggested she send it to The Irish Times. To her surprise, both papers were interested in the piece. She gave the piece to the Examiner and set off to write another for the Times. That’s when she decided: She would write a blog. In early 2015, corkwoman.wordpress.com was born. Tobin began to experience some more challenging times. Her husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. A tree fell on her house. Her family experienced more health problems. “That was good fuel for writing,” she said. Her blog posts began to be shared across social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. Through the WordPress statis-
tics, Tobin began tracking the people reading her blog in countries all over the world. Currently, people from about 100 different countries have read her blog. How did these varied stories get so many shares? “I think I’ve just been lucky,” she said. Her success goes a little beyond luck, however. She quietly markets her blog to other blogs and Facebook pages she thinks are related to her posts. She typically sends a Facebook message to the organization she wants to reach, gives a link and tells moderators they are welcome to share the post if they like. She said her comfort with sharing personal stories comes from life experience. “You finally get to the point where you realize who you are,” she said. Regarding her family, she tries to be cautious about sharing things that might be personal to them. When her husband was diagnosed with cancer, she wrote an emotional piece about her finding out while she was at work. He wasn’t comfortable with her sharing it right away, so she saved it for a later date. He gave her his blessing later, and she posted the blog while he was in surgery.

Cathy Tobin in the garden at Montessori of Winter Garden Charter School. She said teaching in a Montessori school is in her soul.
Her daughter, Ciara, thinks it’s exciting to see her mom’s blog flourish, because the family has always known that their mother loves to write. She doesn’t feel uncomfortable about her mother writing about the difficulties in their lives. In fact, Ciara thinks it has helped them. “We can address feelings that we’ve been repressing,” she said. “It’s kind of comforting.” Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@wotimes.com.

RAVE OF THE WEEK Nicole Monteleone Commer on the residents of Winter Garden: “(I) accidentally left my back window open and my bag in more than plain view when I ran into a store in Fowler Groves for about 30 minutes. (I) came out and found it untouched. (I’m) not stupid or naive enough to be comfortable doing it again, but (I) love that I live in a town where simple mistakes don’t always turn into braindamaging regrets.” We have partnered with the Winter Garden Rants, Raves and Reviews Facebook group to spotlight a different “rave” each week.

When the Orlando Area Polymer Clay Guild sets up for a meeting, each member has her own space and her own set of tools that she will use for the day’s project. But it’s the sharing of those tools, as well as creative ideas, conversation and, of course, a few edible treats, that have made the guild the tight-knit group that it has become. The OAPCG started about 12 years ago at a scrapbooking store in Sanford. Throughout the years, it relocated to a library, Denny’s and a trailer park until landing at First United Methodist Church of Winter Garden in 2011. Meetings are held each month at 9:30 a.m. on the last Saturday. Kem Eid, treasurer of the guild, lives about 75 miles away in Crystal River, but ever since her first visit to an OAPCG meeting, she has preferred it over a similar group that meets closer to her area. “Everybody was so welcoming, so friendly, so supportive,” she said. At each monthly meeting, one member introduces her idea for a project everyone can create. She brings the necessary tools to share, whether those are stencils, molds or non-artistic items, such as kitchen utensils. But the guild members also contribute their creativity to three ongoing charitable projects: Bottles of Hope, Hearts for Heroes and an independent effort for hospice patients. Bottles of Hope is a national project that benefits cancer patients. Artists decorate sterilized glass bottles that were previously used in hospitals for che-

11TH ANNUAL CLAY FANDANGO Each year, the Orlando Area Polymer Clay Guild hosts a five-day retreat, which it calls Clay Fandango, at Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center in Leesburg. Next year’s Fandango will be Thursday, May 19, through Monday, May 23, 2016. There will be three guest instructors. The first is Carol Blackburn, an artist from London known for making clay sheets of intricate patterns that can be made into beads and other jewelry. Next is Syndee Holt, a California artist who specializes in mono printing and laser transfers. The third instructor is Anke Humpert, who is traveling all the way from Germany to teach retreat attendees how to make transformer jewelry, which is a set of jewelry that also can assemble into a small box. OCTOBER, 1966 Remember when homes had telephones that were connected to the wall? When you talked to friends and family, you were tethered to that spot for the duration of the phone call. In 1966, Florida Telephone Corporation advertised the opportunity to get a second phone in your home and listed places where it might be convenient.
Halloween 1958 featured Sissy and Elmer Youngblood at a costume party given by Tom and Mozelle Cox. Tom owned a men’s clothing shop on Plant Street, and his wife owned Mozelle’s Fashion Fair, a shop for women initially located in the Edgewater Hotel. Can anyone verify if the Coxes carried costumes during trick-or-treat season? SUNRIDGE SOCCER
Both the boys and girls soccer teams at SunRidge Middle School punched a ticket to the Orange County Public Schools Middle School Championships — which took place Tuesday, Oct. 27, at West Orange High School, after press time. The boys team for the Eagles won a game in penalty kicks over Lake Nona Middle School Oct. 21 to advance. “We played really hard, and when it came to penalty kicks, I think we all were a little nervous,” eighthgrader Noah Lewis said. “You’ve just got to be calm and think you’re going to make it — even if you’re nervous.” The girls team picked up an exciting 1-0 victory over Bridgewater Middle School, also Oct. 21. how competitive club swimming can be in Central Florida and the quality of swimmers who SouthWest Aquatics’ Stars Swim Team is known for churning out, Katie Schorr and Grace Khunduang probably already knew their young careers were heading in the right direction. But, just in case they didn’t, seeing their name on USA Swimming’s National Age Group Top 10 Lists for the 20142015 swimming year probably did the trick. The lists note the top 10 recorded times of the year, nationally, and the two star Stars combined for six listings. Schorr, 16, was recognized twice, and Khunduang, 12, was recognized a remarkable four times. “It’s a huge deal (for the girls),” said Justin Correia, the head coach for the Stars. “For us, as a club, it’s really good because it tells us that we are a nationally recognized program. We’re on the right track.” Schorr, who lives in Ocoee and
is a sophomore at Montverde Academy, was recognized in the 100-meter freestyle on both the long course (56.84, eighth-best) and short course (50.20, tied for 10th). Schorr has been on an upward trajectory ever since she began swimming at SouthWest, which is also where she took her first swim lessons as a toddler. As a freshman for Montverde last fall, she placed fourth in the state in Class 1A in the 50-meter freestyle and second in the state in the 100-meter freestyle. With high-school swim season currently ongoing and entering the postseason, the
Grace Khunduang was recognized for her times in four different events.
Warriors put together a clean sweep of the rival Apopka Blue Darters Oct. 21 in the championship game of the Class 8A, District 3 Tournament (25-20, 25-22, 25-21). Makala Heidelberg had 20 kills, 2 blocks and 3 aces in the victory for the Warriors (24-3). West Orange has now won consecutive district championships and, on Oct. 28 after press time, the Warriors hosted Timber Creek — the runner-up in Class 8A, District 4 — in the first round of the FHSAA Class 8A State Playoffs. The coverage area’s other three varsity volleyball teams — Ocoee, Foundation Academy and Legacy Charter — all had their seasons come to a close in their respective district tournaments. Ocoee had its season end in a 3-0 loss to Lake Howell, with the Knights finishing the campaign with a 6-13 record. Fo u n d a t i o n Academy defeated Lake Mary Prep, 3-1, in the play-in game of its district tournament, but fell to eventual-district champion Orangewood. Foundation finished the season 4-16. Legacy Charter was eliminated by Windermere Prep and concluded with a 9-14 record.

Cristina Roque The girls soccer team at SunRidge Middle School in Winter Garden went undefeated in the regular season and defeated Bridgewater Middle Oct. 21 1-0 for a spot in the Orange County Public Schools Middle School Championship Oct. 27 at West Orange High School against Avalon Middle. Helping to lead the way for SunRidge (9-0) all season has been eighth-grader Cristina Roque, 13.
What kind of emotions were you feeling as you won the semifinals and earned a spot in the county championship? I was really excited. Last year, we did not make it to the finals because we lost in the semifinals. Are you looking forward to playing on the turf field at West Orange High in the championship? I’m really excited, because there are going to be a lot of people there to cheer us on. (Playing on turf) is different, because the ball moves faster and you have to take better touches. What has been your favorite memory so far from this season? Probably going

Addition of women’s team a win for aspiring soccer stars
Obviously, you’ve done pretty well this season, but how proud of your teammates are you? I’m very proud of them. They’ve been working hard to do better and work as a team. What is your favorite subject at school? My favorite subject is probably language arts. I like to write. What’s the last good movie you saw? Probably “Ride Along” — I liked that movie. It was really funny. Because you’re going to the United States Women’s National Team match on Oct. 25, can you recall how excited you were during the team’s World Cup run? I was very excited, because they worked really hard and trained every day. I really like Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe. Are you inspired by the addition of a women’s professional soccer team to Orlando? Yes, because I get to see what they do and how it feels to get to that level. Do you play any other sports? I’ve done track here (at SunRidge), but soccer is my favorite. What’s your dream job? To be a professional soccer player. — STEVEN RYZEWSKI
STEVEN RYZEWSKI SIDELINE SCENE
Growing up in the greater Chicago area, I had no shortage of local sports heroes. As a ’90s kid living just outside the Windy City, I could — quite literally — worship the ground on which Michael Jordan walked. Unfortunately, it’s never quite been the same for youth and teenage female athletes. There simply aren’t as many high-profile female stars who dominate the sports news cycle. There are some, of course, but for girls growing up in Central Florida and West Orange, there hasn’t been that same local connection that boys get from having the Orlando Magic, the UCF football team or, most recently, the Orlando City Soccer Club. Sure, young female soccer fanatics such as Isabel and Olivia Nuetzi, of Ocoee, had the success of the U.S. Women’s National Team’s winning the World Cup — even going so far as to travel with their family and the Rizzo family of Windermere to Canada to watch the team — but it’s not quite the same as having your own hometown sports heroes. Fortunately, that changed last week. Ahead of the USWNT’s friendly against Brazil Oct. 25 at the Orlando Citrus Bowl — a 3-1 victory for the USA — Orlando City Soccer Club announced it had brought an expansion franchise for the National Women’s Soccer
League to Orlando. Then, on Oct. 26, the Orlando Pride introduced the first three players to be added to its roster: Sarah Hagen, Kaylyn Kyle and Alex Morgan. Morgan, part of that World Cup championship roster, scored the first goal during Sunday’s game and is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world. “It’s just a really great day for women’s soccer … just the fact that we’re bringing an expansion team to the NWSL,” said Morgan, whose trade to Orlando from Portland might have been one of the worstkept secrets in Orlando sports history. “In Florida, there’s so many great NCAA women’s soccer teams … so just showing how youth clubs and college can translate into becoming a professional soccer player, as females, and successful ones, at that — I think it’s something that this region hasn’t had before.” That’s something with which Josie Banks, the captain for the girls varsity team at West Orange High, agrees. “I think it’s long overdue,”
Banks said. “I think it’s such a great step forward. … It’s nice to have the role models and have them be the dream of someone you want to become one day. It’s something that’s relatively new.” The fact is, girls soccer is big here in Central Florida — as evidenced by the enthusiasm of Banks, the Nuetzis and the Rizzos, or even SunRidge Middle School’s Cristina Roque, 13, who just last week told me she wanted to a professional soccer player growing up. Having those role models to look up to, then — and having them on a local basis — could make a world of difference. Just ask the players, themselves. “I just remember that when you do find that special player that you idolize, it means all the world,” said Hagen, who comes to the Pride after playing for Kansas City. “For me, I just want to try and remember that and all the younger girls that look up to me, hopefully, I can give back to them.”

Knights eliminated despite win OCOEE One night after the Ocoee Knights recorded arguably their most impressive win of the season — a 16-12 victory over Wekiva Oct. 22 — they only could watch as the Hagerty Huskies ended their slim chances at a playoff berth. Hagerty’s victory over Lake Howell Oct. 23 gave the Huskies four district wins ahead of their district finale against first-place Edgewater this week (the Eagles are 5-0 in the district). A win against Lake Minneola in Ocoee’s district finale Friday would only get the Knights, 3-2 in Class 7A, District 4, to four wins — and Hagerty owns a tiebreaker because it defeated Ocoee Oct. 2, 28-17. turnaround season under firstyear coach Ben Bullock, more than doubling their win total from 2014 (2) and recording the most wins for the program since 2009; Ocoee finished 7-4 that fall. The win against the Mustangs comes just one season after Wekiva embarrassed Ocoee on its home field, 36-0. The Mustangs
were regarded as one of Central Florida’s better team prior to losing consecutive games to Apoka and then the Knights. A field goal by Candido Worrell with 45 seconds remaining sealed the victory over Wekiva for Ocoee. LIONS WINNERS OF FIVE STRAIGHT
The Foundation Academy Lions celebrated their senior night with a 62-13 win over visiting Harvest Community School. The victory makes it five consecutive wins for the Lions (5-4). Four Foundation players — Jacquane Patterson, Gabe Walker, Konrie Brown and Lester Axson — scored two touchdowns apiece. Lance Axson also scored a touchdown on an interception.

Ocoee teen credits much of her success to the work she puts in at the Winter Garden-based facility. “We all feed off one another at practices. We compete with each other, even though we’re a team, but it’s good (natured),” Schorr said. “(Correia’s coaching style) works a lot for me and helps me out. The environment he creates is competitive but supportive and encouraging. That’s really beneficial.” Schorr is focused on a state championship in the coming weeks but also is swimming at an elite enough level to where qualifying for the Olympic Trials
and the Junior National Team are attainable goals. “She has really come a long way,” Correia said. “On top of her swimming ability, all the girls on the team know she is the best girl on the team, and they look up to her. … But she’s not one of those girls who likes to boast about how fast she is. She’s very humble.” Schorr’s talent and work ethic have made her a model swimmer at SouthWest. Bruce Follensbee, a longtime coach at Dr. Phillips High who now works with the Stars’ younger swimmers — including previously working with both Schorr and Khunduang — encourages his swimmers to observe and take note.
“She’s taken it more seriously each and every year,” Follensbee said. “The closer she’s getting to the national cuts, the more she’s putting into it, and the more focus she has. I try to tell my kids to come early … so they can watch the amount of effort she is putting in.” One of Schorr’s fans at SouthWest is, in fact, Khunduang, who is from Winter Garden. Both girls have younger sisters who take lessons together, something that has enabled a budding friendship. It is especially beneficial for Khunduang, who gets to interact with a role-model swimmer. “(Schorr is) really amazing at

WARRIORS CAN CLINCH DISTRICT WITH WIN The West Orange Warriors can clinch a second consecutive district championship Friday, Oct. 30, when they travel to Wekiva High School to take on the Mustangs. West Orange would complete a clean sweep in district play with a victory, making the district picture nice and clear — Apopka, which is a heavy favorite against Evans, being the presumed district runner-up. If the Warriors were to lose, however, it would plunge the district into a three-way tie. West Orange, Wekiva and Apopka would each be 2-1 and own a tiebreaker over one of the other two teams. This would require a threeway playoff to determine
swimming,” Khunduang said. “She’s really nice and came in one day to talk about swimming (with the middle school-age swimmers).” Khunduang’s recognized times all came in short-course events, in the breast stroke and medley at distances of 100 and 200 meters. So although she may look up to Schorr, it’s a safe bet that there will soon be girls looking up to her, also. “The realm of possibilities (for Grace) is pretty huge — she’s doing really, really good for her age,” Correia said. “Her times are very competitive even with kids who are two or three years older than she is right now.” Khunduang’s achievements are all the more encouraging because she has ample time to improve before competition gets even

WEEK 10 SCHEDULE All games Friday, Oct. 30. West Orange (7-1, 2-0 district) at Wekiva (5-3, 1-1 district), 7:30 p.m. Ocoee (5-3, 3-2 district) at Lake Minneola (6-2, 3-2 district), 7 p.m. Legacy Charter (5-3) at Windermere Prep (5-3), 4:30 p.m. Foundation Academy (5-4, 2-0 district) at Agape Christian (1-7, 0-2 district), 7 p.m. the district’s champion and runner-up on Monday, Nov. 2.
more intense. For Follensbee, who guided Khunduang for the past three years up until the past two months, he sees a swimmer destined for a big stage. “We’re hoping she’s going to be an Olympic Trials qualifier,” Follensbee said. “It’s going to (work) out ideally for her, because that will be her senior year (of high school) the next time around. She’s got the potential.” The combined six NAG times are a record for SouthWest, and with these two working their way up — and inspiring others along the way — they are nice feathers in the cap for the club itself. “We’re dabbling into worldclass swimming, hopefully,” Correia said.
