Spreading cheer in Windermere
T
he town of Windermere is well-known for a host of special events throughout the year — celebrations for Easter and Halloween, for example — but the annual Holiday Social in December brings town residents together for some holiday cheer. This year marks the 35th for the social, and residents are encouraged to head to Windermere Town Hall on Thursday, Dec. 8, with their favorite holiday dish in tow. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes a potluck dinner and festivities for all ages. Some of the fun takes place
before the social. The “Best Dressed Holiday House” contest is a fun way to help make the town festive and sparkling with lights, lawn ornaments and other bright and merry decorations. Be sure to have your house dressed in its holiday best early, though, as the judging deadline is Sunday, Dec. 4. The winner will be announced at the social. The town and the Windermere Police Department also are set to be accepting donations of unwrapped toys for the One Heart for Women and Children Drive. The organization is an Orlandobased nonprofit that connects people in the com-
munity to the resources they need. In addition to collecting toys for OHWC, the town will be taking donations for the Give Kids the World Village Foundation. The GKTW Village is a nonprofit storybook resort in Kissimmee that offers children with life-threatening illnesses and their families a respite in the form of weeklong, cost-free vacations. Last year’s event included an ugly-sweater contest, performances from the Elizabeth Parsons School of Dance, hot chocolate and cookies.

Disney unveils new Christmas event
T
his year, Walt Disney World unveiled an all-new Christmas event for the longawaited holiday season that takes place at the Chinese Theater in Disney’s Hollywood Studios called Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! The new event held its first debut Nov. 14 and will continue through Dec. 31. The holiday nighttime spectacular jam-packed with special effects, iconic holiday tunes, fireworks and snow that uses state-of-the-art image projection technology to tell the story of a search-and-rescue mission for Santa, who has gone missing from the North Pole. Two elves, Wayne and Larry, that some might recognize from an animated show called “Prep & Landing,” go an adventure to find Santa in time before Christmas Eve.
The story incorporates scenes from classic Disney films, including “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Pluto’s Christmas Tree,” “Bambi” and the “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Guests also can chow down on holiday-inspired snacks and desserts in the courtyard
of the Chinese Theater one hour before each performance. The desert party is $69 for adults and $39 for children, including all taxes and gratuities, and comes with a complimentary pair of 3D glasses that create holographic illusions during the show.

Enchanting transformation
A
stroll around the charming shops and streets of downtown Mount Dora is always a pleasure, but during the evening of Dec. 2, it will become an enchanting delight sure to bring holiday cheer and laughter to anyone who visits. From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday evening, the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce and city of Mount Dora will host the 24th annual Mount Dora Christmas Walk. This annual event transforms downtown Mount Dora into an oldfashioned Christmas village, complete with more than two million lights adorning the city, shops selling hundreds of holiday gifts for the early Christmas shoppers, live entertainment and festivities to double the fun. “This event is going to be amazing this year,” said Chris Carson, cultural and special events coordinator for the city of Mount Dora.
“It’s always been about merchants and getting people downtown and shopping, but this year, we kind of turned a corner with it. We have fireworks, more advertising through iHeartmedia, and this year, we added not just fireworks but real reindeer from Canada, five of the premier radio stations from iHeart Media, Fox 35 and two areas where they are going to have live entertainment, bands and stuff. We’re going to have a train for the kids to ride — plenty of things for the kids to do. There’s going to be something on every road and corner that gets your attention.” There also will be choirs singing Christmas carols and musicians playing holiday classics on violins. As is tradition, there also will be a 40-foot tall Christmas tree with a lighting ceremony. The 9 p.m. fireworks show will serve as the evening’s finale.

Located directly in front of the CFE Arena on the campus of the University of Central Florida, Light Up UCF has updated its signature light show to include an additional 30,000 lights and has added falling snow to create an impressive effect during the show. The event also features ice skating, rides and music. Parking is free. Sprinkled throughout the event’s span this winter — running from Nov. 18 through Jan. 7, 2017 — are a number of complimentary activities, including the Holiday
Light Show, the Holiday Film Festival, Light Up Lane and appearances by Santa on select nights. Classic holiday films will screen each Friday and Saturday night on a twostory movie screen as families gather under the stars for the Holiday Film Festival. Light Up Lane is a handson celebration of the season set in a lighted Christmas tree forest littered with life-sized decorations. Of course, Light Up UCF’s Ice Rink is the centerpiece of the event, inviting guests to enjoy Central Florida’s largest outdoor ice skating rink while gliding along to their favorite holiday tunes spun by a live DJ. Rides include an upgraded Ferris wheel, the Light Up Express Train, the Winter Whirl and the Arctic Glide Ice
Slide — where children can climb to the top of a tower and glide on disc sleds across the 100-foot ice-way. Other events include performances on the Duke Energy Community Stage and the Light Up UCF Holiday Market “Under the Stars” on Saturday. Taking place Dec. 10, the market will host local businesses and craftsmen showcasing gifts perfect for loved ones or Secret Santa. Tickets for ice skating, rides and photos with Santa can be purchased at the CFE Arena Box Office on location. Select tickets are also available for purchase through Ticketmaster, ticketmaster. com. How to Be Financially Prepared for the Holidays For many of us, the holiday season is a time of joy and rest. However, planning for the season’s festivities can feel hectic and create financial stress. According to the Consumer Reports National Research Center, top holiday stressors for Americans include gift shopping, crowds and long lines, traveling and taking on some level of debt1. So how can you give generously but not go overboard on your budget? Here are five ways to keep your cash outlays in check while still having a fun and memorable holiday season:
1. SET A BUDGET
One way to keep tabs on what you spend during the season is to set a limit and try to stick with it. Start by looking at what you spent last year and use that as a baseline for this season. Did you spend more or stay on budget? While gifts and travel may the first items that come to mind, also consider what you’ll spend on food, decorations, charitable giving and traditions, such as sending holiday cards.
2. USE YOUR CREDIT CARD WISELY
Gifts, travel and festive meals can add up. If you are going to charge expenses over the holidays, try to spend at a level that enables you to pay the bill when it arrives. Otherwise you’re “borrowing” the money by using your credit card and slowly paying down the debt you’ve accumulated with high interest costs. If you have multiple credit cards, think about using one for holiday purchases that will give you cash back for savings or airline miles for an additional perk.

3. FOCUS ON MORE THAN THE PRICE TAG
4. SHOP CAREFULLY
Getting a head start on gift buying usually results in savings. It gives you time to explore options and compare prices from different retailers. Planning ahead can also help you avoid expensive costs for rush shipping. If you’re an online shopper, consider sending gifts directly to the recipient’s home so you won’t have to ship the gift a second time. If you prefer to shop at the mall, look up each item online while waiting in line to checkout. Many stores have a price-match policy, so it’s worth your time to do your research.

5. CONSIDER AN ALTERNATIVE TO A PRICEY PARTY

If you feel like you’ve overspent in the past, look at this holiday season as an opportunity to be creative as you find ways to have fun while keeping your spending in line.

If you typically host a seasonal bash for a bunch of friends, consider another option – inviting that group to volunteer together instead. Contact your favorite charity or search volunteer sites such as All For Good (allforgood. org) to find opportunities that would allow your group to spend time together without the big cost. If festive parties help you get in the spirit, put a spin on tradition by asking guests to bring their favorite holiday dish or suggesting a round-robin dinner. With either option you’ll enjoy the party without the big price tag.

Most of us would appreciate a smaller but more meaningful gift over something expensive that we will likely regift. One way to do this is to give experiences that create memories. For example, consider bringing your family to a holiday play or making reservations for a special dinner you can enjoy together. If you have a large family that tends to give gifts to each other, you could suggest drawing names to make the process a bit less demanding on everyone.
